Captain John C. McFarren, USAF Distinguished Flying Cross

Captain John C. McFarren distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Weapons System Operator near Qui Hau, North Vietnam, on 7 April 1972. On that date, Captain McFarren planned and flew a high priority reconnaissance mission into heavy concentration of anti-aircraft artillery complexes and active Surface-to-Air Missile sites in support of United States Air Force interdiction efforts. With great courage and without regard for his personal safety, Captain McFarren successfully obtained invaluable photography of Surfaceto-Air Missile sites and trop and supply movements, despite extremely heavy and accurate hostile fire. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain McFarren reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Captain Kevin B. Lombardo, USAF Air Force Commendation Medal with “V� Device Captain Kevin B. Lombardo distinguished himself by an act of courage at Contingency Operating Base Adder, Tallil, Iraq, on 12 March 2008. On that date, Contingency Operating Base Adder received 12 rounds of indirect fire. Although the attack was still in progress, Captain Lombardo moved toward a known fire caused by a rocket impact. Witnessing another rocket hit the vehicle directly in front of him; Captain Lombardo approached the burning truck noticing an

individual trapped inside. Deliberately exposing to incredibly fire, heat and smoke, he expertly administered aid to the injured Soldier, recognizing the critical severity of the Soldier’s injuries, he quickly pulled him away from the flames. Captain Lombardo’s assessment confirmed the injured Soldier had an unobstructed airway, severe life threatening burns, major head trauma, and a partial amputation of his right leg. He immediately applied a tourniquet to the Soldier’s right leg to slow the massive hemorrhaging. Army medics credit this immediate action with keeping the injured Soldier from bleeding to death. By his prompt action and humanitarian regard for his follow man, Captain Lombardo has reflected credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Captain Larry N. Fealy, USAF Silver Star Medal Captain Larry N. Fealy distinguished himself by gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force near Thanh Hoa, North Vietnam, on the night of 31 May 1966. On that date, Captain Fealy flew an unarmed night reconnaissance mission in marginal weather conditions to obtain vital intelligence of communication lines near the Thanh Hoa complex, With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Fealy pursued this mission into a most heavily defended area and successfully evaded three surface-to-air missiles to accomplish his photographic objective. This courageous and aggressive pursuit directly resulted in photographic evidence that led to destroying this vital target by friendly strike aircraft. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Fealy has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Captain Thomas P. Casey, USA Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: Captain Casey distinguished himself by heroic actions on 3 September 1969, while serving as the S-3 Officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam. When elements of Company C came in contact with a large enemy force, Captain Casey was flying over the action in an observation helicopter. As the battle progressed, effective leadership was needed by the ground unit. Immediately, Captain Casey directed his pilot to land in the battle area. Having assumed command of the company, Captain Casey quickly reorganized the element and directed evacuated of the wounded men. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Casey exposed himself to the hail of fire as he led his men in an assault on the enemy stronghold. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the hostile force. Captain Casey’s bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division and the United States Army.

Chief Warrant Officer David A. Walls, USA Distinguishing Flying Cross For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: On 21 December 1968, Chief Warrant Officer Walls distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while flying with heavy fire team

of helicopter gunships in support of a forty man reconnaissance team which had encountered heavy enemy fire. Immediately discerning the location and disposition of both the friendly and enemy forces, he utilized his aircraft integral weapon system and as he attacked the heavily fortified enemy positions he received machinegun fire, along with anti-aircraft and small arms fire from all directions. Despite intense enemy fire, he continued to place accurate fire on the advancing enemy. Due to the close proximity of the enemy to the Allied ground unit, he had to fire within 20 meters of the reconnaissance team, and expose himself to even more enemy fire. Despite the intense fire, he continued to place deadly fire on the enemy and with complete disregard for his own safety, he flew pass after pass at the enemy positions. Largely through bold attacks, the enemy siege was broken and the enemy retreated to a bunker complex. The Allied ground element was then reinforced by an eighty man element and they moved against the enemy in the bunker complex. Almost immediately the combined allied forces were pinned down by withering automatic weapons and rocket fire and once again these men were called upon for extremely close aerial fire support. Because the allied unit was so close and trying to advance, he and the other pilots made repeated tree top level passes firing to keep the enemy down. This maneuver was a complete success and allowed the friendly element to sweep the complex as the enemy ran in disoriented flight, leaving enemy dead. Chief Warrant Officer Walls’ outstanding aerial maneuvers and deadly suppressive fire proved vital to the success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Corporal Donald Allen Campbell, USMC Silver Star Medal For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company B, First Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division in

connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 9 September 1968, Company B was assigned to seize Hill 461 in the vicinity of the Rock pile in Quang Tri Province. Leading his squad as a point element for the company, Corporal Campbell and his men suddenly came under intense automatic weapons and small arms fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force occupying well- fortified positions. Realizing the necessity of rapidly gaining fire superiority and silencing the enemy fire, Corporal Campbell boldly stood erect and assaulted a bunker containing a machine gun. Undaunted by the accurate hostile fire, he resolutely continued his determined efforts, throwing hand grenades with unerring accuracy and silencing the hostile fire. While engaged in his selfless act, Corporal Campbell was mortally wounded. His heroic actions and aggressive fighting spirit inspired all who observed him and saved the lives of several Marines. By his courage, bold initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Corporal Campbell upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

Corporal John C. Babyak, USMC Bronze Star Medal with “V� Device For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy while serving with a Marine rifle company in KOREA on 5 February 1951. Serving as a fire team leader in a rifle platoon, Corporal BABYAK was advancing with his fire team as the leading element of the company when he observed an enemy outpost on high ground dominating the company’s route of advance. Dispatching one member of his fire team to warn his platoon leader, he, with absolute disregard for his personal safety, moved forward with a team-mate to engage the

enemy, expertly maneuvering so that he able to approach the position before the enemy was aware of his presence. His courageous display of professional skill enabled him to assault and overrun the position, killing six of the enemy and capturing their weapons, and then to successfully resist the enemy’s fanatical attempt to retake the position. His initiative and personal heroism enabled the company to pass through without harm, and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Corporal Wilford E. Frash, USMC Silver Star Medal For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company I, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. One the morning of 25 August 1969, Corporal William E. Frash was walking the dangerous point for his platoon during a search and destroy operation south of DaNang when he heard sounds indicating the presence of enemy soldiers nearby. Moving stealthily, he led his platoon commander to where six of the enemy were eating and, while his commander returned to his original location to lead a squad of Marines forward, Corporal Frash remained in his potentially dangerous position to continue his observation. Hearing additional sounds from another direction, he relayed this new development to his platoon commander and then moved alone, into an enemy occupied village and immediately came under small arms fire. Dauntlessly holding his ground until the point squad arrived, he then led his companions in an aggressive assault against the enemy and continually maneuvering ahead of the squad to lead them to hostile emplacements. By his

courage, aggressive leadership and unwavering devotion to duty at great personal risk, Corporal Frash inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

First Lieutenant Edgar C. Fell, USA Distinguished Flying Cross For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty; Lieutenant Fell distinguished himself by heroic actions on 19 March 1967 while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1D in support of a combat assault by elements of the 3rd Brigade, 4th Infantry Division near Soui Da. Flying the number two ship in the second element of his company, he was subjected to heavy automatic weapons fire on his initial approach to the landing zone. On the second trip in, the lead ship was severely damaged by a mine explosion of such intensity that it blew both lead and the number two ship out of the landing zone. Realizing the need for positive leadership at this time he voluntarily assumed command of the flight after it became apparent that the lead aircraft could not continue the mission. Under his leadership the flight the flight made five more flights into the same landing zone under intense enemy fire and amid exploding land mines. Only after completing the mission did he discover that his own aircraft had sustained substantial damage from a mine explosion. As a result of his extraordinary personal courage, self-determination, and devotion to duty, he placed his own safety secondary to the successful completion of the mission. His heroic actions and professionalism were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

First Lieutenant Walter A. Bettcher, USA Army Commendation Medal with “V� Device

For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: First Lieutenant Bettcher distinguished himself by heroic action 22 August 1968 while serving as Senior Advisor, 269 Regional Forces Rifle Company, Loc Ninh District, Bien Long Province, Republic of Vietnam. While the company was moving through Loc Tan Village, Loc Ninh District on a house to house search, it was suddenly subjected to intense enemy fire from an enemy force of unknown strength. With casualties falling about him, Lieutenant Bettcher disregard for his personal safety as he moved around the battle area, estimated the enemy’s situation and rendered timely precise advice to his counterpart. Realizing the necessity of additional fire support, he immediately called in gun support which helped to quell the enemy fire. His tactical ability and courageous leadership under perilous conditions were significant factors in defeat of the enemy force. First Lieutenant Bettcher’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.

Lance Corporal Joe C. Paul, USMC Medal of Honor For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 18 August 1965, while serving with Company H, Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, THIRD Marine Division (Reinforced), Fleet Marine Force in action against an armed enemy near Chu Lai, Republic of Vietnam. In violent battle, Lance Corporal Paul’s platoon sustained five casualties as it was temporarily pinned down, by devastating mortar, recoilless rifle, automatic weapons, and rifle fire delivered by insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in well

entrenched positions. The wounded Marines were unable to move from their perilously exposed positions forward of the remainder of their platoon, and were suddenly subjected to a barrage of white phosphorous rifle grenades. Lance Corporal Paul, fully aware that his tactics would almost certainly result in serious injury or death to himself, chose to disregard his safety and boldly dashed across the fire swept rice paddies, placed himself between his wounded comrades and the enemy, and delivered effective suppressive fire with his automatic weapon in order to divert the attack long enough to allow the casualties to be evacuated.

Although critically wounded during the course of the battle, he resolutely remained in his exposed position and continued to fire his rifle until he collapsed and was evacuated. By his fortitude and gallant spirit of self-sacrifice in the face of almost certain death, he saved the lives of several of his fellow Marines. His heroic actions served to inspire all who observed him and reflect the highest credit upon himself, the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the cause of freedom.

Lance Corporal Robert E. Watson, USMC Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V� Device For heroic achievement in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division. On 26 November 1967 during Operation Foster in Quang Nam Province, Lance Corporal WATSON’s company came under heavy mortar and automatic weapons fire from an entrenched, numerically superior enemy force. In

the initial moments of the fire fight, the company sustained numerous casualties and was temporarily pinned down. Observing a wounded Marine lying in an open area, Lance Corporal WATSON unhesitatingly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire as he moved to the side of the casualty, placed him across his shoulders and carried him to a covered position. With complete disregard for his own safety, he courageously returned to the exposed area several times to recover wounded Marines, carrying them to covered positions where they received medical aid and were prepared for evacuation. His steadfast determination and deep concern for his wounded companions inspired all who observed him and undoubtedly were instrumental in saving several Marine lives. Lance Corporal WATSON’s resolute courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Hospital Corpsman Third Class Robert F. Holtz, USN Silver Star Medal For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Corpsman with Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 December 1968, Company A was conducting a search and destroy operation in Quang Nam province when the Marines were pinned down by intense machine gun fire from a reinforced North Vietnamese Army platoon occupying a fortified position and sustained heavy

casualties. Rapidly assessing the situation, Petty Officer Holtz unhesitatingly moved from his position to a site where the wounded Marines had had been collected and began rendering skillful emergency first aid treatment. Alertly hearing calls for medical assistance from an area of heavy fighting, he fearlessly maneuvered across the fireswept terrain and, although painfully wounded, quickly provided medical treatment to his fallen comrades. As the company resumed the attack, the Marines again came under heavy North Vietnamese machine fire. Ignoring the hostile rounds impacting near him, Petty Officer Holtz was wounded a second time by enemy small arms fire as he was attempting to revive a dying companion. Steadfastly refusing medical evacuation he resolutely remained with his platoon rendering medical aid and assisting in the extraction of casualties. His daring initiative and heroic efforts earned the respect and admiration of all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. By his courage, sincere concern for the welfare of his comrades and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Petty Officer Holtz upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Private First Class Paul L. Feathers, USA Bronze Star Medal with “V� Device For heroism, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force. Private First Class Feathers distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 5 November 1967, while serving as a bulldozer operator on a combat operation in the Republic of Vietnam. During the morning hours of 5 November 1967, Private First Class Feathers voluntarily went on a convoy to procure repair parts. The convoy had to travel several miles through enemy infested territory to reach the supply point. On the return trip, at

1230 hours on 5 November 1967, Private First Class Feathers was riding in the lead element of the convoy when this vehicle was hit by enemy fire. The vehicle was immediately disabled and several occupants were wounded. Despite his serious wounds, he kept his composure and took immediate actions to lead a retaliation against this hostile force. With complete disregard for his own life, Private First Class Feathers operated the radio to give invaluable assistance to the reactionary forces. After the enemy forces fled in the face of superior forces, Private First Class Feathers directed the medical evacuation of the wounded, by giving the necessary information and directions to the medical evacuation helicopters. After all had been secured he was evacuated. Private First Class Feathers’ personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Private First Class John F. McAllister, USA Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device For heroism in connection with military actions involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Private First Class McAllister distinguishing himself by valorous actions on the afternoon of 29 April 1968, while serving as a Squad Leader with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry Division, on a movement to contact mission near My Tho, Vietnam. When his company came under intense fire from a well-entrenched and numerically rushed to the most forward element to provide additional firepower. Upon hearing that his commanding officer had been wounded, Private McAllister crawled over 100 meters under heavy fire to pull the officer and his dead radiotelephone operator,

and two other mortally wounded soldiers, back to a secure position. Private First Class McAllister’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.

Private First Class Clayton H. Compher, USA Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device CLAYTON H. COMPHER, xxx, Private First Class, Company A, 17th Armored Infantry Battalion, for heroic achievement on 5 April 1945 at Erbach, Germany. His squad was pinned down in an open field by fire from dug in automatic weapons and by exploding hand grenades tossed from well camouflaged foxholes. Private First Class Compher, upon his own initiative, exposed himself to this fire in order to distract the enemy’s attention and to cover the squad’s withdrawal. Under his protective fire, the squad withdrew without suffering any casualties. He himself withdrew last of all, his own rifle fire being his only protection. He entered military service from Bourneville, Ohio.

Sergeant Danny W. Bell, USA Bronze Star Medal w/”V” Device While serving with HSC, 216th Engineer Combat Battalion, 264th Engineer Group, 1st Infantry Division, Sergeant Danny W. Bell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous achievement during ground combat operations in and around Ad Duluiyah, Iraq on 07 July 2004. Sergeant Bell was performing security

at the site of a downed vehicle when he was attacked by rocket propelled grenade and small arms fire. He was knocked to the ground, injured, and his individual weapon was shattered by a rocket propelled grenade. Without concern for his own injuries or his disabled weapon, he quickly got to his feet and began performing lifesaving first aid on the seriously wounded. He placed his own body between the enemy and a wounded comrade. Sergeant Bell’s heroism and dedication to his fellow soldiers on the battlefield upholds the finest traditions of military service and refle4cts great credit upon him, Task Force Danger, and the United States Army.

Sergeant Donald I. Jakeway, USA Bronze Star Medal For conspicuous gallantry in ground operations against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations, during the Normandy Campaign. Sergeant Donald Jakeway, a member of the 508th Parachute Infantry, landed in Normandy, France at 0200 on June 6, 1944. Intense antiaircraft and machine-gun fire was directed against the approaching planes and parachutist drops. Sergeant Jakeway along with other elements of the Regiment seized Hill 30, in the wedge between the Merderet and Douve Rivers and fought vastly superior enemy forces for three days. From this position, he and they continually threatened German units moving in from the west, as well as the enemy forces opposing the crossing of our troops over the Merderet near La Fiere and Chef-du-Pont. Sergeant Jakeway and the 508th likewise denied the enemy opportunity to throw reinforcements to the east where they could oppose the beach landings and repelled continuous attacks from infantry, tanks, mortars and artillery for more than 60 hours without resupply. For

this and other similar actions, Sergeant Donald Jakeway is worthy of emulation and reflects the highest traditions of the Army of the United States.

Sergeant John P. Luft, USA Bronze Star Medal w “V� Device For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: On 9 January 1968, Sergeant Luft was leading his platoon on a reconnaissance in force mission south of Ben Cat. While moving through a dense jungle, the lead platoon received intensive small arms, automatic weapons and claymore mine fire from a large, well entrenched Viet Cong force. Sergeant Luft, whose platoon was second in line, immediately deployed his men to positions from which they could suppress the hostile fire, then moved 50 meters through intensive automatic weapons fire to aid the men who had been wounded in the initial barrage. When he reached their position, only 10 meters from an enemy entrenchment, he completely disregarded his personal safety as he remained exposed to the hostile fire to render first aid to the casualties. While treating a wounded soldier, he was hit in the hand by a hostile round. He bandaged his wound, then secured a rifle and paced effective suppressive fire on the insurgents, enabling other members of his unit to evacuate the casualties. His courage and determination under fire were instrumental in saving many lives. Sergeant Luft’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the First Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Sergeant Nicholas W. Denman, USA Silver Star For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Nicholas W. Denman, B Battery, 3rd Battalion, 18th Artillery, distinguished himself on 3 May 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Sergeant Denman’s 175mm gun section was in general support reinforcing the fires of the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Artillery Regiment near Tam Ky. At 0355 hours, the 175mm gun platoon and the rear elements of the 2nd Battalion, 11th Marine Artillery Regiment came under 82mm mortar fire from two directions. As the mortar rounds pounded, through the area, Sergeant Denman exposed himself to hostile fire, sprinted to his armored personnel carrier, and engaged the mortar position to his front with the 50 caliber machine gun.

Sergeant Denman’s fire silenced the mortar position and drove off the enemy causing them to leave a quantity of unexpended mortar ammunition. Sergeant Denman’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, Task Force OREGON and the United States Army.

Sergeant Thomas L Henning, USMC Silver Star Medal For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company C, Third Reconnaissance Battalion, Third Marine Division in connection with combat operations against an enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 1 June 1969,

Sergeant Henning was a member of an eight man reconnaissance team which was helilifted into an abandoned fire support base on Mutter’s Ridge in Quang Tri Province to establish an observation post. During the early hours of the following morning, a hostile sapper unit launched a vicious assault upon the Marines and, utilizing grenades and satchel charges caused total casualties among the men. Although gravely wounded by fragments from the rocket propelled grenade rounds, Sergeant Henning ignored his painful injuries and immediately commenced firing light antitank assault weapons at the attackers and hurling grenades into their midst in a tenacious defense of his position.

Fearlessly moving throughout the fire swept terrain, he shouted instructions to his men and skillfully directed their fire at the enemy. When a medical evacuation helicopter arrived. Sergeant Henning, with complete disregard for his painful wounds, carried two of the casualties to the aircraft and, alertly observing that the North Vietnamese Army unit was attempting a final assault, provided an effective base of suppressive fire while his companions boarded the helicopter. His bold initiative and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving his fellow Marines from further serious injury or possible death. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave personal danger, Sergeant Henning contributed significantly to the defeat of the enemy attack and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

U.S.N. Signalman 3rd Class Conard Joseph Conway Bronze Star Medal

For distinguishing himself by heroic and meritorious conduct while serving aboard the LCI (Landing Craft, Infantry) (R) 226 in Amphibious operations against the enemy in the Southwest Pacific Area from 26

December 1943 to 16 February 1945. Signalman 3rd Class Conway participated in a total of eight “D-Day� landings including:

January 9, 1945 Lingayen Gulf January 29, 1945 Zambales Province, Luzon, P.I. February 15, 1945 Mariveles Harbor, Bataan, Luzon, P.I. February 16, 1945 Corregidor Island, P.I.

His conduct throughout, particularly at Lingayen Gulf, Mariveles Harbor, and Corregidor Island, distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character. His courage and performance of duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Navy of the United States.

SOCS (SEAL/FMF/SW) Edward C. Byers, Jr. USN Medal of Honor For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as a Hostage Rescue Force Team Member in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from 8 to 9 December, 2012. As the rescue force approached the target building, an enemy sentry detected them and darted inside to alert his fellow captors. The sentry quickly reemerged, and the lead assaulter attempted to neutralize him. Chief Byers with his team sprinted to the door of the target building. As the primary breacher, Chief Byers stood in the doorway fully exposed to enemy fire while ripping down six layers of heavy

blankets fastened to the inside ceiling and to the walls to clear a path for the rescue force. The first assaulter pushed his way through the blankets and was mortally wounded by enemy small arms fire from within. Chief Byers, completely aware of the imminent threat, fearlessly rushed into the room and engaged an enemy guard aiming an AK-47 at him. He then tackled another adult male who had darted towards the corner of the room. During the ensuing hand-to-hand struggle, Chief Byers confirmed the man was not the hostage and engaged him.

As other rescue team members called out to the hostage, Chief Byers heard a voice respond in English and raced toward it. He jumped atop the American hostage and shielded him from the high volume of fire within the small room.

While covering the hostage, Chief Byers immobilized another guard with his bare hands, and restrained the guard until another teammate could eliminate him. His bold and decisive actions under fire saved the lives of the hostage and several of his teammates. By his undaunted courage, intrepid fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of near certain death, Chief Petty Officer Byers reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Specialist Four Donald D. Schweitzer, USA Bronze Star Medal w/�V� Device For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: On 21 August 1967 Specialist Four Schweitzer distinguished himself by heroic action while serving as a door gunner on an armed helicopter, which was part of a light fire team conducting armed reconnaissance missions south of Duc Hoa, Republic of Vietnam. During the missions, he risked his life as he left the aircraft, on numerous occasions, to gather enemy equipment and documents. On one occasion, he had a brief fire fight with several enemy troops who were hidden in a small tunnel. He killed the enemy with his machine gun and returned to the

aircraft with as much captured equipment as he could carry. His actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Specialist Fourth Class Jack W. Born, USA Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device For heroism not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: On 9 August 1968, Specialist Born was serving as a squad leader with his company during a

reconnaissance in force operation. At approximately 1540 hours, the lead element discovered an enemy communications wire. As they began to follow the wire, the element made heavy contact with an undetermined size enemy force utilizing automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fire. Specialist Born immediately moved his squad forward to assist the lead element, which was pinned down by the enemy fire. Without regard for his personal safety, he moved from position to position among his men through the hail of hostile rounds directing their fire. His squad’s effective suppressive fire enabled the lead elements to regroup. Joining them in a direct assault on the enemy positions, Specialist Born put forth devastating fire with his personal weapon and skillfully coordinated the fire and movement of his men. His courageous determination and dynamic leadership were instrumental in limiting friendly losses contributed significantly to the victory achieved by his unit. Specialist Four Born’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division and the United States Army.

Specialist Four Ronald K. Westfall, USA Distinguished Service Cross For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Specialist Four Westfall distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 19 November 1966 while serving as a rifleman on a combat reconnaissance patrol. When the company to his left made contact with an entrenched Viet Cong force, Specialist Westfall’s platoon quickly advanced to provide flanking fire. As the unit maneuvered

forward, it received intense automatic weapons and sniper fire and was pinned down. In the initial moments of the engagement, Specialist Westfall was wounded, but dauntlessly continued to fire his weapon until his ammunition was expended.

Exposing himself to the intense hostile fire, he moved around the platoon redistributing weapons and ammunition among the uninjured personnel. With complete disregard for his safety, Specialist Westfall then crawled outside the perimeter to assist several of his wounded comrades who were exposed to the Viet Cong fire. On three separate occasions, he deliberately risked his life to pull a wounded man inside the platoon area. Crawling forward a fourth time, he noticed a hostile casualty, captured him, and dragged the insurgent back into the perimeter.

When a relief force finally reached the beleaguered unit, Specialist Westfall carried several wounded men to an evacuation area. Only after his platoon had withdrawn to the landing zone did he allow himself to be treated for his wound. His unremitting courage while receiving intense hostile fire saved three lives and inspired his fellow soldiers. Specialist Westfall’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Specialist 4 Roy R. Sprague, USA Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device For heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Sprague distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman with Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division. On 23 January 1969, after two days of almost constant contact with a well-organized enemy force. Specialist Sprague’s element attempted to reach the

perimeter of a sister company they had been cut off from. Volunteering to check the area for a safe access route, Specialist Sprague purposely exposed himself on numerous occasions so his fellow soldiers could pinpoint the enemy positions as the enemy snipers fired upon him. He successfully found a safe route to the other company’s perimeter and then returned to lead his element to the safety of the perimeter. Specialist Four Sprague’s personal bravery, outstanding performance and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Specialist Jack E. Kasee Army Commendation Medal with “V” Device

For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. On 29 August 1968, Specialist Kasee was serving as a gunner with his mortar platoon at its night defensive position. At approximately 2350 hours, the camp was subjected to an intense North Vietnamese mortar and rocket propelled grenade attack. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Specialist Kasee maneuvered from the security of his bunker through the hail of flying shrapnel to his mortar emplacement and began returning effective counter mortar fire on the enemy locations. Ignoring the impacting rounds, he continued to adjust his weapon until the insurgents’ guns were silenced. His courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. Specialist Kasee’s actions are in keeping with

the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Specialist James L. Messerschmitt, USA Silver Star Medal For gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 21 July 1969. Specialist Messerschmitt distinguished himself while serving as crew chief aboard a UH-1H helicopter engaged in an emergency combat extraction near the Hue, Republic of Vietnam. As his helicopter approached the mountainous extraction site, it began to receive intense automatic weapons fire from enemy ground positions. Displaying outstanding air discipline under the heavy fire, he immediately began to level accurate suppressive fire which enabled the helicopter to hover above the pickup point. Ignoring his own safety, he moved forward and dropped the extraction ropes to the soldiers below. He then returned to his position and effectively neutralized the vancing insurgents who were only twenty meters from the ground troops. The task was complicated by lowering clouds and the advent of nightfall. His verbal directions to the pilot were invaluable in keeping the aircraft from striking the surrounding trees. After a successful extraction, the helicopter was forced to fly through the cloud-filled mountain passes. His guidance to the pilot enabled the aircraft to safely negotiate the hazardous route. Specialist Messerschmitt’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Warrant Officer John E. Grafmiller, USA

Distinguished Flying Cross For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Grafmiller distinguished himself while serving as a Helicopter Pilot with Company A, 4th Aviation Battalion, 4th Infantry Division. On 29 April 1968, Warrant Officer Grafmiller was on a rescue mission of a friendly company which had sustained many casualties from enemy mortar and small arms fire while in contact with a reinforced North Vietnamese Army company. Immediate extraction was essential to save the lives of the wounded and to prevent the company from being overrun.

Warrant Officer Grafmiller was advised before starting the approach that mortar fire had hit the pick-up zone while three of the ships were on the ground and one had received automatic weapons fire. Warrant Officer Grafmiller aided the aircraft commander in avoiding the high trees and obstacles that surrounded the pick-up zone. He kept sight of the men on the ground and aided the aircraft commander in landing the aircraft in a manner which enabled the men to board while exposing themselves to enemy fire for a minimum length of time. While the aircraft was in the pick-up zone, a mortar round landed beneath the aircraft blowing it up and forward, and the main rotor struck the trees. Warrant Officer Grafmiller and the aircraft commander made radio calls and navigated the most direct route to a secure area. The calm courage and exemplary devotion to duty of Warrant Officer Grafmiller are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
