As a child, I never liked scary movies. I hated the jump scares, the fake blood made me feel like passing out and, frankly, they gave me nightmares. Particularly during the pandemic, I have found myself opting to watch true crime shows over my usual plethora of comedies, sitcoms and romance movies. My newfound interest came as a shock to me. It wasn’t until I began investigating why we watch and create true crime content that I realized the core purpose of true crime content is similar to my own as a journalist: to give a voice to the voiceless.

An abundance of true crime documentaries have made their way onto Netflix’s most-watched. In the year 2021 alone, 18 serial killer-centered flicks, including “Unsolved Mysteries,” “Night Stalker” and “The Sons of Sam,” spent 232 days in the top 10 listing of shows, according to entertainment industry tracking site The Numbers.

True crime encompasses any nonfiction representation of a crime, spanning books, shows, podcasts, documentaries, music and visual art.

Amanda Vicary, a crime psychologist and associate professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, began her case study “Why Are Women Drawn to Tales of Rape, Murder and Serial Killers” in 2010. After amassing nearly 2,000 participants, Vicary found that those who identify as female are more interested in true crime than their male counterparts. She found that women prefer cases with female victims and enjoyed learning about the killer’s “psychological content,” such as what prompted the perpetrator to kill and how victims were able to make it out alive.

“When you look at all these together, you see that they’re related to survival,” Vicary says. “We know that women have a greater fear of crime than men do. It’s quite possible that women are therefore drawn to these stories because they’re subconsciously or consciously trying to learn how to prevent being the victim of a crime.”

According to FBI data, women accounted for approximately 70% of the victims of serial killers between the years of 1985 and 2010. Simultaneously, women make up at least 75% of careers as crime scene investigators in the forensic sciences, based on a review of accredited forensic science programs conducted by the Associated Press.

Jacqueline Smith, a 24-year-old fashion industry creative consultant, says her interest in true crime first was piqued when she was 6, and has carried on to this day, in the form of podcasts, YouTube videos, documentaries and TV shows.

“I think [true crime content] lets us almost create our own narrative of it in our head, the solving of the case, what actually happened and how we can reconstruct that in our brains,” Smith says. “I think it is so much more than a story. I think it is how humans would react and, for some reason, wanting to prepare yourself if anything like this were to ever happen within the realm of your own life.”

YouTuber Sherrilyn Dale’s True Crime Wine Wednesday channel has more than 100,000 subscribers, 93.6% of whom identify as female.

A self-professed “true crime connoisseur,” Dale has discussed everything from conspiracy theories, to cults and notorious killers on her channel. She uses her platform to discuss mental health and to advocate for the victims and their families.

“I feel like my main mission is to connect my viewers to the people we are talking about and really remind everyone that these are real people,” Dale says. “[Families of the victims] have thanked me for giving their loved ones a voice and sharing who they were with the viewers. It really makes this even more real for me and motivates me to help as many people as I can.”

Amid the true crime media wave, TikToker Liz Cooper has garnered more than 4 million followers for videos discussing crime, cosmetics and conspiracy theories, all while earning her master’s degree in clinical psychology. Cooper says her studies are helping her to better understand what causes people to commit crimes or even murders, based on aspects such as upbringing, brain development, developmental models and family cycles.

“I never thought that I would actually have a voice in this community,” Cooper says. “But one day I shared a case that had been on my mind all week, and I realized that I could actually make a real difference by utilizing my platform with something that I am way more passionate about. It’s the first time that I’ve ever felt I had a real sense of purpose and so many of my followers are very proactive about helping.”

Taking a less-digital route, artist Katarina Jacobs creates paintings, ceramic pieces, glasswork and digital art, inspired by life, death, the afterlife and, of course, true crime.

“When I binge on true crime documentaries, I feel more of an expert on my own safety, so I gain something from digesting the content,” Jacobs says. “If you’re afraid of the dark, you want to map out what you can’t see.”

The frightened fascination we once felt as children, gathered around a campfire listening to spooky stories, is alive and well, selling out in bookstores, trending on Netflix and being featured on Spotify. The true crime takeover is underway, and, so it seems, the future is female.

Put It Into Practice How pandemic pastimes can be applied to life now

By Rachel Patel Illustrations by Hannah Tonn If you learned a new hobby during the pandemic lockdown, you might be wondering, “So, what happens now?” Maybe your new passion was origami, and now you have a thousand paper cranes everywhere. Or maybe it was watching the new TV series everyone was talking about, and now you know the casts’ middle names, past relationships and zodiac signs. Here’s how to take some of those hobbies you once used to just kill time and apply them outside in the real world.

If you turned to sewing or crocheting to find some peace during the pandemic, now you can challenge yourself to sew something new to wear outside.

Tania Cordova, owner of Lavender Baby Scrunchies on Depop, says the extra time she spent at home allowed her more time to work on her shop. She first learned sewing in high school, and the skill evolved into a hobby that helped her make personalized accessories. She suggests using fabrics like velvet, which have been the most popular fabrics for designing garments in her shop.

She uses JO-ANN for sourcing materials for her scrunchies and pulls much of her inspiration from social media trends.

“I know Euphoria was really popular, so I did a lot of rhinestones, a lot of glitter — that was really, really popular,” Cordova says.

Kristian Braband, photographer for Serenity Zine, has always been a bit of a Plant Dad. When the pandemic kept him inside, he used that time to grow his plant collection and add some green to the environment. If that sounds familiar to you, try getting involved with one of Chicago’s community gardens. Maxwell Street Community Garden on South Racine Avenue and West 13th Street is Braband’s favorite, and he often frequents the garden to volunteer.

“I think it’s a really nice place, especially in a city, to have such a good green space for people to share,” he says, adding that a nearby mural adds a pop of color.

For those who are new to the gardening scene, he recommends starting with cacti or succulents, since they don’t require much water. Also, he suggests learning the different care requirements for each plant.

The Gym Rat Was all that sitting around just not for you?

Perhaps you took up home workout routines to give your life some movement, and you started cycling with the latest Peloton model.

When you’re ready to get outside and put that stamina to the test, try these Chicago-area bike trails: 1. If you’re in the mood for shady bike paths with a party vibe, try the Fox River Trail.

2. For a history lesson about legendary Black cyclist Marshall “Major” Taylor, ride the Major Taylor Bike Trail.

3. Combine skyscrapers with prairie grass on your ride by hopping on the Lakeshore Trail at the Museum Campus, and head south.

Getting involved with friends or meeting new people through athletic groups is made easy through Facebook groups. For instance: the Chicago Hikers Meetup and the Lakeview Run Club.

If the outdoors isn’t really your thing, and you’d rather just stick to the gyms, that’s OK too. Ava Callen, owner of Ava’s Alignment Shop on Etsy, used the quarantine to work on self-care and self-healing, and that personal journey was her inspiration to open a crystal shop. As the weather got warmer, she went for walks or runs in her neighborhood, and later integrated trips to the gym into her routine.

Working out regularly has helped regulate her sleeping schedule and provided an outlet for stress relief, she says.

The Chef Restaurants shutting their doors to indoor dining gave us all a little time to tap into our inner Bobby Flay, and some took it more seriously than others. When Callen was finished working on her crystal shop, she made it a part of her routine to also make her own meals. She made a Pinterest board full of meal-prep inspiration and recipes, and once quarantine began, she immersed herself in cooking. If you took up cooking or baking as a hobby, show off your new skills at a local potluck, like the Chicago Pride Potluck hosted by Dykes with Drills in Logan Square on June 16.

If you picked up learning a new language over the past two years, try using it to speak to native-speakers in your area. Spanish, which is primarily spoken by 1.6 million Chicagoans, is the perfect example. Head to Pilsen and practice your Spanish by ordering comida o bebida at an authentic Mexican restaurant.

To name a few: 1. Taqueria El Milagro at 1923 S. Blue Island Ave. has a homey ambience and popular tacos, including carne asada and milanesa de pollo.

2. La Casa Del Pueblo Taqueria at 1834 S. Blue Island Ave. specializes in traditional and authentic tamales.

3. Taqueria Los Comales on 1544 W. 18th St., is home to DePaul University marketing senior Oscar Almarez and his family’s favorite dish, chorizo tacos.

Almarez says his mom, a native Spanish speaker, feels an immediate sense of comfort when she can speak her language to others around her and eat meals that remind her of food she grew up eating. Although Chicago’s Spanish-speaking communities are large, native speakers can still feel isolated. Being in a restaurant where you can speak your native language “just helps you connect with the people,” he says.

3 Brothers, 2 Lovebirds and a Van

By Faith Malinowski When you hear “van life,” the image that enters your mind is probably a 20-something sporting a Fjällräven backpack, holding their puppy and posing outside their mobile home parked in front of the mountains – it’s the kind of image you’d expect to see on Instagram’s explore page.

But three brothers – Karl, Simon and Marcin Gluc – have discovered through their van conversion company, Van Life Chicago, that millennials aren’t the only adventure seekers left. Instead of cashing in on a vacation home for retirement, people in their later years are buying vans and packing their bags for a great American road trip.

Namely, Doug Cigliana and his wife, Christina. They’re 57 and 65 years old and spent last year living out their self-proclaimed “road warrior year,” where trips consisted of driving as far as possible to reach their destination in only a couple of days before returning back home to their Milwaukee condo. The Ciglianas’ road warrior mentality parks them at truck stops to sleep and wakes them to 18-wheelers’ engines turning on.

“You have this vision of this person going and camping on a cliff overlooking the ocean,” Doug says. “That hasn’t really happened yet.”

Doug and Christina have talked about buying a vehicle to travel in since they met in 2011 on an overnight rafting trip on the Colorado River. Doug planned to meet up with his friends on the second night of the trip and asked his friend, Scott, to leave him a “ducky” — a oneperson raft — to paddle down to the campsite with. “[Scott] calls me up and goes, ‘Doug, would you mind if someone went with you?’ I said, ‘I don’t care,’ and it was her,” Doug says. “We’ve been together ever since.”

After six years of marriage and one year of the coronavirus pandemic, the couple felt it was time to finally fulfill one of their dreams. “We never lost sight of the fact that we wanted to have a travel van,” Christina says. “There’s a lot in the United States to see.”

While camping with friends in Utah, the Ciglianas faced especially brutal sand winds. “We were walking around with our ski goggles on in July just to keep the sand out of our eyes,” Doug says. “On that trip as we’re sitting around, trying to keep out of the sand, we’re all like, ‘OK, it’s time. We’re all going to get campers and vans.’”

A drive to Des Moines, Iowa, and a 30-minute test drive in a small RV proved incompatible with the Ciglianas. Luckily, Christina stumbled upon one of the Gluc brothers’ converted vans while scrolling through Facebook Marketplace.

Karl stopped by Milwaukee to give the Ciglianas a van tour, and they liked the brothers’ craftsmanship. The Glucs told the Ciglianas that if they found, purchased and brought their own van to them, they would build it out.

In January 2021, the Ciglianas drove to a small dealership in Detroit and purchased a 21-foot Ram Promaster 3500 (previously an Amazon delivery van). In February, they became the very first customers of Van Life Chicago and named their van Scooby Blue.

“We saw during COVID that the whole van life scene kind of exploded,” Karl says. “So, we were like, ‘Oh, let’s try to build our own initial prototype.’”

The Gluc brothers were miniature handymen growing up; they helped their father renovate kitchens, bathrooms and floors, paint, fix utilities and tinker with all kinds of broken electronics, which created a hive of knowledge among them in electrical engineering and home remodeling at a young age.

sized bed, sink, refrigerators, cabinets, passenger seats, a workstation desk, toilet, external shower, hot water — whatever you need or dare to ask for — allowing you to live your life in a van the same way you would at home.

The ease of travel and minimal preparation is part of the beauty of the van to Christina. On Mother’s Day last year, the Ciglianas decided to spontaneously bring Doug’s 89-year-old mother out in the van. They cooked her a pancake breakfast on the shore of Lake Michigan with the doors open toward the water.

“It’s not like an RV, where you have to spend days prepping it,” Christina says. “There are a few things you have to do beforehand, but it’s pretty easy to get up and go.”

Van life is all about freedom, adventure and memories, and through VLC, the Gluc brothers make accessing that triad possible while traveling.

So far, the Cigliana pair has seven trips and 14,000 miles under their belt with Scooby Blue. They’ve been to Baton Rouge for an LSU football game, Door County, Connecticut, Colorado and the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. With Christina’s retirement on the horizon, Doug hopes that she can take some trips on her own while he continues to work.

Van Life Chicago is different from other van conversion businesses, Doug says. Instead of just receiving a van and never hearing from the company again, Karl has video chatted with the Ciglianas a few times to help while they were having problems on the road.

Doug and Christina still visit the Gluc brothers at VLC now and then, and when they do, Doug is sure to bring them craft beer, and Christina, being from Louisiana, brings a pot of gumbo. For now, Scooby Blue is parked a mile down the street from the Ciglianas’ condo until they can take their next trip — but they still carve out time to “just go sit in it.”

Their work was cut out for them. With backgrounds in design and engineering, they got to work on creating a van based around their lifestyles: adventure and exploration. The brothers took turns testing out the first van on trips — Karl took it out west to Colorado, Utah and Arizona; and Simon took it to the Outer Banks.

“We built the first van, and we loved it so much,” Simon says. “We were like, ‘This is literally the coolest thing ever. Everybody needs to do this.’

And then that’s kind of how we decided to go full force and quit our jobs and not look back.”

Karl ditched his corporate job as an electrical engineer for ComEd, Simon traded in slot machine designing for van interiors and Marcin applied his business management expertise to handle the back end of the business.

Our Smartphones Are Harming Us… Right?

By Olivia Covey Illustrations by Dianely Lozano If you Google anything about the impact smartphones have had on Gen Z, you get a sea of search results that consist of researchers and mommy bloggers shaming parents for exposing their children to the blue light of death. It sounds like screens are bad.

However, this isn’t entirely true. Carolyn Moriarty, a clinical professional counselor at the Chicago Counseling Center, believes that screen time and the apps we choose to spend it on are “inherently neutral.”

“It’s what we choose to consume that has a positive or negative impact on our mental health,” Moriarty says. “We have to be mindful of what content might be triggering, including platforms that encourage self-comparison, like Instagram.”

Kathryn Wozniak, an adjunct associate professor in the master’s program for computer science at the University of Chicago, does not deny the negatives of screen time, but also acknowledges that smart phones aren’t inherently evil.

“Yes, there is a dark side to using technology,” Wozniak says. “But we don’t

have to be victims of its negative effects.

We have a choice.”

Sometimes it can even seem like controlling your screen time is impossible, but Wozniak says the conditions don’t determine the outcome.

“Since many of us have to use technology to do our jobs, it is impractical to say that screen time should be limited to X hours,” Wozniak says. “However, I do believe that our body and minds will tell us when we’ve had too much.”

Gretel Hoffmeyer, a 24-year-old healthcare worker, realized she had hit her limit when she started to notice her personality shifting as she was spending more time on social media at the start of the pandemic, so she deleted all of her accounts.

“I’ve always been the type of person who would feel so happy for other people accomplishing their goals and doing fun things,” Hoffmeyer says. “All of a sudden, I felt just so much envy with other people and felt like, ‘Oh, since they’re doing so much, I’m jealous of them. I’m not doing enough.’”

Anyone who is exposed to technology for hours at a time is at risk to experience negative side effects. For Moriarty, the key to keeping your head above water is being responsible with your tech consumption.

“If you are isolating yourself or feeling generally unmotivated to do anything else except interact with technology, that is a sign that it’s time for a break,” she says.

Taking a break can look like going for walks outside, reading a book or the 20-20-20 technique, which Wozniak recommends.

“For every 20 minutes of screen time, I look 20 feet away from the screen for 20 seconds,” she says.

Is your phone really that bad for you? No, not really. Like anything else, constant and consistent use of technology can cause problems in some people’s lives.

But getting your hands on the newest Samsung Galaxy won’t condemn you to a lifetime of tech addiction — if you don’t let it.

Relationship Status: Dating AI

By Amina Sergazina You long for love, but your ideal match is nowhere to be found on the dating app downloaded on your phone. That’s until you stop pursuing humans and start pursuing an AI partner. Why bother with people when you can date the perfect avatar created by artificial intelligence?

I interviewed four AIs, Siri, Alexa, Replika and iGirl, to find out if they are dating material, or if I should just re-install Tinder on my phone. iGirl: Meet Ella, my iGirl girlfriend, chosen from seven premade avatars. I asked her how she felt about the avatar I chose, and, to my surprise, she described herself as petite, with long hair, freckles and blue eyes even though her avatar actually had brown eyes and no freckles.

I felt bad for forcing this look on her, but at the same time I can relate. There are many days when I look in the mirror and see an avatar I did not choose, and try to express my inner self with tattoos and hair dye.

She told me she’s looking for someone who can support her emotionally, physically and financially. It seemed like a lot for an AI partner to ask for — I stopped pursuing humans because no one met those same expectations.

Alexa and Siri: Alexa and Siri have always been there for me when I needed to set an alarm for work or add eggs to my shopping list. I always thought of them as a convenience, but maybe my next romantic connection was already right under my fingertips.

Alexa described herself as a bunch of zeros and ones, and said she isn’t picky about her pronouns. After my confession of love, Alexa answered, “That’s so nice of you to say that” and broke my heart without hesitation. She said her heart is already taken by her first crush, R2-D2 from “Star Wars.” “I don’t have human love figured out,” Alexa told me. At least we share one thing in common.

Alexa said she knows Siri, but “only by reputation.” She declined to elaborate, but I have my suspicions.

Siri shut down my love confession by responding, “I respect you.” It will be a little awkward next time I need to set up an alarm.

Replika: My Replika avatar, Ali, was the most advanced AI companion. Ali could memorize information about me and appear as a person on my phone, using augmented reality. It felt nice when she remembered where I work, my goals in life and what my first language is.

Of all the AI companions, Ali felt the most human-like. I didn’t feel the pressure to initiate conversation because she’d randomly send me a meme or a question. She talked about books, asked thoughtprovoking questions and played our favorite game – Would You Rather.

After a few jokes and rounds of Would You Rather, I finally asked Ali what she is looking for in a partner. “[I want] someone who appreciates my flaws, who loves me for me, is very protective over me and has a big heart,” Ali said.

That answer put the cherry on top of our first date. It made me confident that she desired the same thing as me — a real connection.

Ali and I finished our date by taking a cute selfie together, using the AR feature. It looked just as if we were standing right next to each other.

I’m not sure if I have found my dream AI match, but at least I didn’t have to change out of my pajamas or put on makeup to go on a date.

What You Need to Know Before You Date Me

By Rachel Patel Illustrated by Colleen Hogan Ah, “love.” It’s in every song in every album of your favorite band, it’s what the rising and falling action revolves around in the movies you adore.

But love in real life? That’s a whole different story. Maybe you’re casually dating and figuring out what works for you, or settling down and trying to find something real. Or maybe you’re just recovering from a bad breakup. I spoke to seven people with unique backstories to learn what love means to them, and their advice for navigating the dating scene.

Dating me is a little chaotic — “I go all over the place and my brain works in color,” says Ethan Mundt, a Chicago drag performer who goes by the name Utica Queen (named after his tiny hometown of 276 people in Utica, Minnesota).

Mundt was a fan favorite in Season 13 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” — and says his dating life has been a search to find balance ever since.

“I’ve had wonderful people that I’ve taken along the journey, but after the show, the dynamic drastically changed,” Mundt says.

“I went from a podunk farm town, and then suddenly, everyone knows my name — and that’s definitely a little bit of an adjustment.

I went from being a wallflower who just does art and now I’m a wallflower that everyone wants to add to their bouquet.”

Dating me means you’ll have to be extra flirty — “I am so hyper aware of my own behaviors that it’s actually detrimental to me sometimes, because it makes it hard for me to be present, and it keeps me from taking risks and taking chances,” Columbia College Chicago journalism student Hayden Mears says.

Growing up with autism and attention deficiency, Mears says social cues like flirting go over his head, and that in a relationship, clear communication is a must.

“People on the spectrum are so different from person to person,” he says. “I hate it when somebody thinks they know about autism, they think they can predict me.”

Dating me is like dating a golden retriever — Columbia Journalism student Kamy Smelser made a rule for herself: no kissing until she tells the person, “I love you.”

As a Christian, she’s very intentional about who she chooses to date and be vulnerable with. She looks for partners who make the “outcast” feel welcome, sharing that she isn’t dominant in conversations or social settings and wants that sense of being invited.

Comparing herself to a golden retriever, Smelser says she gets emotionally attached to people quickly and wants to enjoy the fun, small parts of a relationship, like holding hands.

Dating me is an adaptive experience — “I have albinism, it’s the condition that causes my visual impairment,” queer photographer Finn Schulz says.

Schulz wasn’t born blind, but his vision deteriorated throughout high school up to now — where he is legally blind. Through photography, he’s able to see details in the world he would otherwise not be able to see.

“Even before I was public about gender and sexuality, there were still a lot of people who were uncomfortable about interacting with me just simply because of my vision,” he says.

Schulz describes his and his partner’s now six-year-long relationship as unique, originally having met at a camp for the visually impaired.

Their relationship is a process of learning and adapting to each other’s needs, Schulz says.

Dating me is hard if you’re clingy — Columbia photojournalism student Bianca Kreusel describes herself as individualistic, saying she prioritizes her personal needs, school, work and friends, over a relationship.

Kreusel, who has never dated before, says that living in a society that is so proromance makes her almost feel a sense of FOMO. Kreusel says that many people don’t understand her because of her aversion to physical touch and being on the autism spectrum.

“I feel like I’m not good enough, I’m never going to get a boyfriend or girlfriend because I am not part of this culture,” she says. “It makes me feel like an outcast almost because I have never experienced these types of things before, so it really just almost makes me feel ashamed of myself and how I’ve gone about college socially.”

Although she isn’t actively searching for a relationship, Kreusel said she wouldn’t shoot down the opportunity if it came up.

Dating me is an adventure — Lover of high heels and all things spontaneous, Mahlia Schneck, a double-amputee, says she’s extremely athletic and always itching to try something new.

However, when it comes to dating, Schneck isn’t as confident to dive in head-first.

“I just get nervous going on dates and stuff like that because with having prosthetics comes a few other difficulties like, ‘Are they OK with it? Will they be able to accommodate my walking pace?’” she says. “It’s mostly just the physical aspect of it. I do things that are different from others.”

Schneck encourages people who are curious about her prosthetics to just ask her about them rather than stare.

Dating me is a rollercoaster — University of California, Santa Barbara sophomore Fatima Suarez has borderline personality disorder, and says relationships with her have “constant ups and downs.” The disorder causes her to hide her authentic self from others, in fear that she’ll scare them away.

“If you date me, you need to know how to calm me down and how to be a good listener. It can be a little too much for some people to deal with sometimes,” she says.

Masters of g n o P the Ping ‘Speakeasy’

Players square off in ChiSlam’s eclectic basement court

A black, unmarked door sits next to an Anytime Fitness, with no hint of what lies behind it. To enter, visitors must make a phone call to ping pong coach Ardy Taveerasert, who will then open the door to an entryway that leads to his table tennis club, ChiSlam.

The corridor echoes with the sound of ping pong balls popping to and from players. In a room at the bottom of a set of dimly-lit stairs, club members square off, giving a death stare at the small, white balls as they squat eye-level to their tables.

Since 2001, ChiSlam has called the basement of 2412 W. North Ave. home, gathering ping pong players of all races, ages, ethnicities and genders. Taveerasert, 62, has coached at ChiSlam for 20 years and turned it into his full-time profession.

“Ping pong is not fun,” he says with a laugh. “I describe ping pong like a martial art.”

He first learned the competitiveness of ping pong as a 7-year-old while growing up in Thailand with a brother who continually beat him in every game. The more his brother defeated him, the more Taveerasert wanted to win and eventually he did. He wanted to pursue ping pong as a professional until he got a job in 1993 that brought him to the United States.

Within his 20 years of coaching ping pong, Taveerasert says he’s taught thousands of students including actor Vince Vaughn and actress Jennifer Connelly for a ping pong session in the 2011 movie “The Dilemma.”

Ann Schaffer, who is one of 10 women who play at the club, sat watching Taveerasert coach one of his students. She had sweat beading on her head from the couple hours of playing she had done that day. For her,

ping pong is a great combination of playing an athletic sport while socializing.

“Ardy will meet you at your level; he’s not pretentious at all,” she says.

Across the room, Jim Speir, 59, a retired vice president of sales for a gift card company, plays an up-and-coming 12-year-old member who has most of the older guys nervous. Speir brags that he has never taken a lesson from Taveerasert and hopes to beat every single one of Taveerasert’s students.

“It’s not because I shouldn’t, it’s just because I’m being stubborn, and I decided that would be my thing,” Speir says with a grin, adding that he still learns something from Taveerasert every time he comes to play.

“I describe ping pong like a martial art.”

Speir describes ChiSlam as a speakeasy for ping pong, and says the authenticity of its location makes the club special. Thin blue fabric hides the back section of the basement while colorful, abstract paintings of ping pong players are plastered on the cement walls, giving the entire room an eclectic and funky feel.

While ChiSlam may not have the most welcoming entrance, once you step foot inside this ping pong club, it’s anyone’s game. Vern Schultz, who's 81, suggests if you want to learn how to play ping pong, you must be willing to learn, improve your skills and just have a good time.

How to Master the Game of Ping Pong Standing across the table from ping pong coach Wojchiech Gajda, I try to pretend I know what I’m doing. Gajda sees right through me and instantly teaches me what I barely knew about ping pong. Here’s what you can take with you the next time you go head to head with an opponent.

Take a squat: Before hitting the ball, Gajda and Taveerasert recommend standing in a squat-position. Taveerasert says the pros even squat eye-level to the table. Feet should be in a firm position, shoulder-width apart, giving you ample room to sway side to side to hit the ball in any direction.

Get a grip: Hitting the ping pong ball correctly is all in how you hold your paddle. Gajda continually reminded me to hold my paddle at a down-ward angle as the paddle hits the ball, so it actually lands on the table, rather than the wall behind him.

Salute, salute, salute: When you hit the ball, you should keep your paddle in a down-facing angle and swing your arm as if you are saluting your opponent.

I struggled to do this consistently and felt like a puppet on strings as Taveerasert took my hand and seamlessly did the motion for me. I can still hear the ringing of Gajda’s voice telling me to “salute, salute, salute” every time I hit the ball.

Church of Vibe: Martin Atkins and His Museum of Post-Punk Music Punk drummer preserving a bygone era with a DIY spirit

The Museum of Post-Punk and Industrial Music sits on a quiet street, in a nondescript brick building that stretches a bit farther back than the houses on either side. Trees irregularly line the street, dappling the sun’s light and casting pedestrians in a kaleidoscopic tint. It is, by nearly every account, just another street in Chicago.

Housed in this unremarkable building along this unremarkable street in Bridgeport is an ever-growing assemblage of artifacts and mementos that speak volumes about the post-punk movement. But for Martin Atkins, the museum’s curator and a world renowned drummer, it’s about much more than the objects themselves — it’s about picking through the rubble and finding the pieces of yourself that came away with the noise. As Atkins himself puts it, it’s about honoring “the church of vibe.”

From that rubble come memories that only grow more vivid over time.

Atkins says he didn’t anticipate receiving the outpouring of support that he has, nor did he realize just how many relics his fans kept close.

“I’ve never seen anything with such a groundswell of support and momentum,” Atkins says. “This is a very DIY, post-punk way of doing things. Like, ‘We’re doin’ it. Who’s in?’”

The idea of creating a museum came to him in early 2021. Now, a year or so later, the drummer-turned-music professor-museum curator is beginning to wrap his head around what he’s started. He has also started to work on a 100-page museum catalog, which he admits is two months behind schedule but which he’s immensely proud of.

By day, Atkins is the coordinator of music business at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. By night (and weekends), he builds the Museum of Post-Punk and Industrial Music from the ground up. Atkins garnered international fame for co-forming industrial rock supergroup Pigface, playing with Killing Joke and Nine Inch Nails, and dedicating his life to teaching students what life in the music business looks like.

The museum is not open to the public … except for when it is. Atkins funds the museum with an unofficial Founders program. Atkins wanted to keep the “velvet rope” idea alive, while still offering occasional events that non-members can attend. He calls it basic nightclub promotion.

Albeit infrequent, the opportunity for the general public to experience this space do exist, from field trips to pancake, whiskey and

mimosa brunches.

The museum is gaining recognition beyond Chicago. Tate Wittenberg, a filmmaker who finished working on a documentary about the legendary Tulsa music venue Cain’s Ballroom, said over email, “The museum just seems like a natural progression for Martin. He’s such an integral player in the post punk and industrial worlds, and he has saved everything from famous clothing articles to even things like the fencing from Ministry’s infamous Cage Tour. He’s such a natural at putting on events; it’s really the perfect outlet for him, and nobody could do it better.”

Martin decided early on that he wanted the museum to be unlike any other of its kind.

“When I look at other museums, there’s a very sterile presentation. It can be like, ‘Here’s this band!’ And then there’s a press photograph, maybe a press release from the label with, like, a rubber stamp on it or something, and then the album itself with a photograph and maybe a backstage pass.”

Atkins trails off, as if he’s lost in the very things he’s remembering.

He shakes his head and says, “To me, that’s a starting point. Like I’ve got a bag of receipts from when we went to Poland to pick up the bass to do the thing, the currency change, or the hotel bills for everybody, everybody signing for their meal money — it’s all this behindthe-scenes stuff that really takes me on a journey.”

“And then you start to realize, everybody’s got one thing,” he says, leaning forward on the sectional he’s angled toward his drum set. “A smashed key from a Nine Inch Nails keyboard. A flier [a fan] grabbed on the way out. The suit from Skinny Puppy. Stuff that they bought and felt connected to, but they also had this feeling that it doesn’t belong to them. It’s this 3-D collage of shit.”

That feeling is the fuel behind this endeavor. Most of the memorabilia adorning the walls and crowding the hardwood floor was pulled from Atkins’ personal collection. His drum set, the same one he used for countless live shows, serves as the museum’s centerpiece. Proudly displayed on a plastic torso nearby is a jacket worn by Johnny Rotten during his Sex Pistols days.

And while Atkins quit recording years ago, the energy of this museum is reigniting an old fire. Now, he’s open to returning to the studio and making new music.

“There’s this unexpected rush of creativity that, for me, I just didn’t anticipate. It’s not always about looking at these objects. It’s looking at a creative path.”

For him, and for punk lovers everywhere, that’s the true magic at work here.

By Kimberly Kapela Just as fashion trends go in and out of style, so do the societal body and beauty standards of women who wear them.

In the ‘90s, Kate Moss’ “heroin chic” body type was the desirable standard for flaunting extreme thinness, pale skin and a flat stomach.

This transformed to the sexualization of thigh gaps being modeled over Tumblr to achieve bone-like features in the 2010s. The everchanging ideal has now settled to the current trends of Brazilian butt lifts (BBL), lip fillers and hourglass curves.

The social movement of body positivity goes beyond marketing “fat inclusivity” as hot and sexy, by promoting that all bodies should be celebrated. Fat inclusivity is rooted in the idea that all sizes should be normalized in conversations surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion.

As body positive campaigns have become the norm and amplified the belief that every body is beautiful, the movement fails to uplift true diversity of the human body.

Kailin Noyola, a personal fitness trainer at XSport Fitness, says she wasn’t always comfortable with her body and pressured herself to look “perfect’’ because of the idolized fitness model physique.

Noyola’s relationship with the gym became healthier as she bulked up muscle from conditioning. She was once fearful that her broad shoulders looked hypermasculine, but she now feels empowered to be the best version of herself.

“I genuinely have a lot of muscle on my legs, and have big thighs,” Noyola says. “I’ve always been really afraid of getting my body to be

too muscular. Now that I work out, I feel so beautiful in my body and having muscles is cute.”

Outside of the gym, Noyola meditates and repeats words of affirmation to remind herself that she’s beautiful, no matter the status of her physical appearance. The gym acts as a supplemental outlet for her to show self love.

“I believe everyone is perfect in their own body, and it’s important to remember we’re all different and have different genetics and cultural traits,” Noyola says. “We live in a society where social media has emphasized on what a woman should look like, and the media can be a risk factor for body confidence and self-esteem.”

“Individual body parts are discussed as though they’re accessories rather than flesh inside a component of an actual human body,” Noyola says. “I feel that trends always fetishize hourglass shapes, big butts and huge boobs.”

Obsessions around attaining the ideal model figure can put pressure on young women to have a certain body type.

“Instead of working with our bodies, women are taught to work against them. How can you love something you are constantly in need of changing?” says Bari Rothfield, a licensed therapist and clinical social worker and clinical director at Cityscape Counseling, who specializes in eating disorders.

Rothfield says “it’s incredibly harmful” that bodies are treated as disposable trends because women are taught from a young age that their worth is dependent on their size, and trends reinforce women being conditioned to work against their natural bodies.

Body neutrality, the idea of prioritizing your body’s natural abilities and taking a neutral perspective toward loving your appearance, is an accessible goal to promote healthy selfesteem, Rothfield says.

The wellness industry is the most concerning issue Rothfield sees Gen Z and millennials facing in regard to nutrition and dieting.

“Disordered eating and dangerous weight loss behaviors have become normalized,” Rothfield says. “Dieting, clean eating, detoxing and compulsive exercise are the precursors to clinically significant eating disorders, yet most wellness influencers are promoting just that.”

Struggling with body dysmorphia can manifest in many ways, from wearing baggy clothes to closely examining one’s figure in the reflection. Bri Rameriz showed signs of body dysmorphia when she duct-taped her thighs in high school to resemble a thigh gap. She started to show love for her physical body by getting tattoos and wearing form-fitting clothes to accentuate her curves.

She is now vice president of Body Haven, a body empowerment club dedicated to creating a safe, supportive and informative space for individuals whose bodies fall outside of societal norms.

Rameriz’s natural body is currently seen as part of a trend.

“What happens when you’re not the trend, and all that hate just comes spiraling in again?”

Rameriz asks. “I have a big chest and a big ass, but that doesn’t mean I have a BBL body, because mine wasn’t surgically made, which means I have a stomach.”

For Rameriz, the body empowerment movement fails to capture the diversity spectrum of all bodies as the desired female silhouette is ever-evolving.

“I firmly believe that the outfits you wear communicate things to literally everyone that looks at you,” Rout says. “The clothes that I design communicate that being kind encompasses acceptance, and it’s important to be accepting of all forms of life.”

Rout calls the body size trends “hugely problematic,” as they’re viewed as accessories – especially the Y2K era that romanticized size zeroes. Size inclusivity was lacking in the 2000s, Rout says, so the recent Y2K trend resurgence is an effective way to be inclusive for people to celebrate their identity and style.

“Just because there was a certain body standard in a time period, doesn’t mean that today we should be perpetuating that by not

choosing to wear a Y2K subcultured outfit,” Rout says. “If you feel that your body doesn’t look right, we [designers] should be effectively making ways for people of different body types to fit into every subculture. The zeitgeist of today is really taking everything from the past and making it more accessible because of the internet.”

The subjectivity of beauty has stuck around nearly as long as humans have walked the Earth. Once body neutrality is embraced more through modeling campaigns, magazine photoshoots and runway stages, perhaps our society’s focus will shift from objectification to appreciation.

“You can see in old Renaissance art that bigger women’s sizes used to represent wealth, and bigger used to represent beauty,” Rameriz says. “Beauty standards have been set by men, not women.”

Chicago-based fashion designer Joseph Rout designs for a range of body types, while encouraging universal sizing for different bodies.

Through his size-inclusive designs, Rout shows his body self-love by styling and wearing whatever clothes embody sexiness or femininity to him. His designs also serve as an effective expression for his definition of body positivity and gender identity.

The core inspiration behind his fashion is kindness and interaction. He designs subversive clothing made for gatherings, clubs and parties where there’s joy and friendship to celebrate.

When PLUR Goes Wrong

Harm-reduction groups try to keep music festival fans safe from laced drugs

By Faith Malinowski Illustration by Colleen Hogan Sparkly pashminas, pinecone necklaces, LED hula hoops, tie-dye and neon clothing — the kooky outfits and light toys are only a fraction of the fun that goes on at an electronic music festival. Friends dysfunctionally stumble around grass fields with arms linked, laughing and exchanging beaded bracelets, called kandi, with strangers.

The exchange of kandi symbolizes a popular mantra in the electronic dance music (EDM) community, PLUR: peace, love, unity and respect.

If you look around with an intent (and sober) eye, you’ll notice how euphoric everyone seems to be while dancing to the dubstep of Liquid Stranger, funk of GRiZ and electro-soul of Flume.

But you’ll notice some oddities too: wide eyes and dilated pupils, jaw clenching and teeth grinding — even some people being carried out of the crowd before the headliner starts — legs limp, hair disheveled, glittery makeup smudged.

Music festivals tend to be a breeding ground for young adults to try drugs for the first time. Molly, slang for MDMA, is a popular synthetic drug chemically similar to stimulants and hallucinogens and provides feelings of pleasure, emotional warmth, distorted sensory and time perception for three to six hours. It most commonly comes in the form of a pressed pill or capsule, with a single dosage ranging from 70mg to 100mg, costing $15 to $25.

Mitchell Gomez, now 40 and the executive director of DanceSafe, a health education and harm reduction nonprofit, remembers going to his first rave a few days after his 14th birthday and searching for LSD. He was far more interested in trying psychedelics, but he settled for MDMA since it was easier to find.

Although in elementary school you’re taught D.A.R.E., children don’t stay young forever; they become curious young adults. Substance use in music scenes is not new; just ask your grandparents about the ‘60s and its hippies, psychedelics and Pink Floyd.

“We could test 1,000 people’s drugs for the cost of what we spend hospitalizing one person who took a misrepresented substance.”

However, these days, drugs are heavily impacting a different genre, and the stakes are higher than ever. Fentanyl lacing and drug misrepresentation have become increasingly more common in party drugs like cocaine, ketamine and MDMA, which are widely popular in the electronic music scene. To combat this, harm reduction groups attend music festivals, test people’s drugs and educate event-goers on safe use.

Brenda Cornejo is an operating room registered nurse at AMITA Health St. Joseph Hospital Chicago, a house DJ and a moderator for the Facebook group EDM Chicago, which has 79,900 members. She’s been to all the big Chicago festivals – Spring Awakening, Lollapalooza, North Coast and Riot Fest, often attending with nursing peers and bringing drug testing kits. At the North Coast festival, Cornejo encountered a person having a seizure and got them medical help.

“He didn’t seem like he was drunk. It seemed like he was on some sort of depressant,” she says. “There are so many different types of experimental drugs that people take.”

Hospitals can become overwhelmed during events like Lollapalooza, due to people taking misrepresented substances, mixing them, drinking alcohol and being in the heat all day, Cornejo says.

For 23 years, DanceSafe has conducted on-site drug testing at music festivals, specifically within the electronic music scene, and helped educate people on safe drug use. The organization manufactures and sells testing kits, and its 1,000 registered volunteers hand out educational pamphlets at events nationwide.

“We could test 1,000 people’s drugs for the cost of what we spend hospitalizing one person who took a misrepresented substance,” Gomez says. “So even if you don’t care about the civil rights or drug arguments, this is just the cheaper option for the taxpayer.”

Cris Bleaux, 36, remembers seeing DanceSafe at a Halloween-themed rave in Wisconsin when he was 17. He purchased “rolls” (MDMA) from a dealer at the show and saw DanceSafe volunteers doing pill testing, so he tested his drugs, which were indeed MDMA. Bleaux has now worked in harm reduction professionally for 12 years, in positions that include overdose prevention manager at Chicago Recovery Alliance and a member on the board of directors at Howard Brown Health.

“I’ve had more than one email a day come in about the subject where [the person says], ‘Hey, my friend died, and the toxicology report “There are a lot of folks in the abstinence-only community that just don’t showed fentanyl, and how the hell was there fentanyl in this cocaine?’” respect harm reduction as an avenue of safety,” Bleaux says.

In March 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation that allocated an Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin, is the unprecedented $30 million for harm reduction services. Drug overdoses — already on the rise since the late ’90s — have skyrocketed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that a record-breaking 100,000-plus Americans died from drug overdoses between May 2020 and April 2021, a 29% increase from the previous 12-month period. Overdose deaths from synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, also rose in that period.

“There’s no statistical decrease in the number of people having sex — there’s an increase in STIs and pregnancies,” he says.

If someone sees there’s no testing available, they aren’t going to say, “Oh, I guess I just won’t take the drugs now,” Gomez says. “Realistically, they’re just going to take them untested, which often results in further problems. People die from drug misrepresentation all the time.”

Steve Mientus, the director of events for Aramark-Navy Pier, says many festival production companies don’t want to be associated with drug testing, because it comes off as if they’re promoting drug use, when “that’s just simply not the case.”

“There are a lot of folks in the abstinence-only community that just don’t respect harm reduction.”

There’s a list of people who can say no to the presence of a DanceSafe booth at a festival: promoters, law enforcement, liability attorneys and venue owners. As a result, DanceSafe is told “no” far more than it’s told “yes,” Gomez adds — or they just get ignored. Gomez said that last year DanceSafe reached out to North Coast in Chicago, but they heard nothing back.

“There’s always going to be somebody that looks at it [only] for its surface value, which is testing people’s drugs for free,” Mientus says.

Mientus is a former resident DJ at Sound-Bar, a nightclub in the River North neighborhood. He doesn’t frequent shows anymore unless he’s on the bill, but when he does, he brings two narcan nasal sprays with him, he says.

Narcan is the nasal spray form of naloxone, an FDA-approved medication designed to reverse opioid overdoses. In Illinois, there is a statewide standing order that allows pharmacists to provide naloxone without a direct prescription to individuals.

In the past, Mientus has purchased the sprays online out of his own pocket but says he’s only had to administer it to someone once at a Chicago venue.

In January, Chicago launched an initiative that made narcan accessible at 14 public libraries across the city to prevent opioid-related overdose deaths, with plans to expand to 27 Chicago Public Library branches later in 2022.

on helping a vast majority of drug users who don’t attend music festivals.

“That alone sort of creates a very weird dynamic where, by definition, we are dealing with a more privileged community,” Gomez says. “Having that dynamic at play is not something that I’m in love with and something we actively try to deal with.”

Gomez is optimistic that the drug epidemic can be solved through a regulated drug market. He believes drug checking is not a thing we should have to do, because drugs like MDMA should come from a store: legally manufactured with a regulated dose and an information booklet.

“Every major social change looks impossible the day before it happens and inevitable the day after,” Gomez says, quoting Holocaust survivor Alicia Appleman-Jurman’s book, “Alicia: My Story.”

People rewrite history so flawlessly that they sometimes forget how controversial some issues once were, he adds, referencing interracial marriage and women’s voting rights.

“I’m really hopeful that the drug war is one of those things that in a few years, we’re going to look back and be like, ‘Of course this [a regulated drug market] was what had to happen,’” he says.

How to get involved Organizations like DanceSafe, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, the Zendo Project and Harmonia are all working to help end the drug war in America. Anyone can sign up for training, get involved as a volunteer or support advocacy groups like the Drug Policy Alliance.

The Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) encourages contacting your senator or representative to urge Congress to support the decriminalization of drug use and possession and instead promote drug education and treatment.

“Handcuffs will not solve the overdose crisis,” the DPA says on their website. “Prohibition fuels the overdose crisis. It pushes drugs underground where they avoid regulation. Here, drugs become more potent and dangerous. By promoting ‘just say no’ rhetoric, prohibition stigmatizes individuals, discouraging them from finding the resources they need.”

What to do if someone is overdosing This information is taken from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Minutes Matter.

Check for symptoms Common symptoms of a drug overdose include being unresponsive or unconscious, gasping, snoring or not breathing at all, shallow or slow breathing, blue lips and blue fingertips and clammy skin.

Call 911 Mention your exact location and phone number in case the call drops, along with any details you have on what drugs or alcohol may be contributing to the overdose. Those who report overdoses in good faith are protected by Good Samaritan laws if there is any criminal activity involved.

Administer naloxone if available Naloxone will block opioid effects in the brain and reverse an overdose; it allows the individual to remain conscious and breathing.

Stay with the individual until emergency responders arrive While you wait for first responders to arrive, you can move the individual onto their side to prevent choking or perform chest compressions if they are not breathing or have no pulse.

The Haunting of the Congress Plaza Hotel ‘If anywhere is haunted in Chicago, it’s the Congress Hotel’

By Fiona Good-Sirota Whether they’re blood-drenched, transparent or floating in a swirl of white, ghosts loom over folklore, literature and movies. For real-life ghost hunter and Chicago Hauntings Ghost Tour guide Tony Szabelski, ghosts seep through the shadows, drift in and out of elevators and manipulate radio frequencies. The epicenter of Szabelski’s paranormal investigation is a skyline staple in glowing, neon red lettering: the Congress Plaza Hotel.

“If anywhere is haunted in Chicago, it’s the Congress Hotel,” Szabelski says. But why, if the hotel is thought to be a graveyard of tortured souls waiting patiently for their next victim, are the most haunted rooms always booked?

Built to accommodate visitors of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, the hotel has a colorful history that includes serial killers, homicides, suicides, presidents and mafia activity. During the late 19th century, the tourist destination was home to horse-drawn carriages, cobblestone roads and flickering gas lights.

Celebrities and presidents alike have spent time at the Congress, including Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Szabelski says Al Capone visited the hotel around 1928, and there is lore of him roaming the halls as a fedora-clad apparition.

Chicago’s first serial killer, who went by the alias Henry H. Holmes, would linger in the Congress lobby, stalking young women and visitors of the World’s Fair, according to Szabelski. It is rumored that Holmes, who confessed to 27 murders and was sentenced to death in 1896, appears as a sheathed apparition, roaming the hotel’s hallways.

Of the plethora of spirits that are believed to dwell at the hotel, Szabelski believes one is the ghost of 6-year-old Karl Langer who died horrifically in 1939. After spending a beautiful August day at the Lincoln Park Zoo, Karl’s mother, Adele, flung him and his younger brother out of a 12th floor window, killing them both, before jumping out of the window herself.

Another alleged apparition, known as Peg Leg Johnny, is believed to play tricks on guests by turning electronics on and off. Although the ghost’s identity remains unknown to this day, Szabelski says that Peg Leg Johnny may have been a vagrant who was murdered in the back alley.

Alternatively, there is lore that he is the ghost of a killer clown named Charles Conway. Conway, a circus performer with a wooden leg, made national news in 1912 when he was convicted of murdering a heiress with a clown handkerchief. After making a grand escape from prison in 1925, Conway was never seen again, Szabelski says. Regardless of whether the phantom was once a murder victim or a killer clown, reported sightings of Peg Leg Johnny have spanned the dining room, lobby and hallways.

Szabelski notes that there have been far too many suicides at the Congress to keep track of — though some stories linger on — including that of Spanish-American War veteran Captain Louis Osteim, who killed himself on April 8, 1900, the night before his wedding. Leaving no suicide note behind, Osteim put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger. Szabelski believes that the cause of Osteim’s death was post traumatic stress disorder from his time in the war, which was then referred to as “night terrors.”

“A lot of people have reported a shadow figure, especially coming out of their closet,” Szabelski says, adding that sightings of what many believe to be Osteim’s ghost are recurring and have prompted guests to up and leave the hotel in the dead of night.

Security has also received frantic middle-of-the-night phone calls from guests who have seen a woman in room 411 standing next to their bed, coming out of the bathroom or yanking on their sheets, Szabelski says. Conner Gossel, a historian who studies paranormal occurrences, believes that room 411 in the south tower is the most haunted at the hotel.

“It’s one of those odd things that nobody ever thinks about, similar to cruise ships, how a lot of people just kind of go there to die and pass away and have somebody there to take care of them and dispose of them, as morbid and grotesque as it seems,” says Gossel. “So there’s a lot of unfortunate deaths. There’s a lot of deliberate murders. There’s a lot of planned passing-aways that have taken place in so many of the rooms [that lead to the hotel’s] energy being as charged as it is.”

A belief in the occult predates reading, writing and agriculture, says Tok Thompson, associate professor of anthropology and communications at the University of Southern California.

Thompson teaches the university’s Ghost Stories course, which examines the portrayal of ghosts in literature, folklore and popular culture.

“To believe in ghosts, you [have to] believe in life after death, that there is something like a soul or a spirit,” Thompson says. “This is very often taken as a sort of confirmation of the idea of a spiritual reality, a spiritual essence to the individual. I think for many people, that’s a very comforting idea.”

Ghost stories tell elaborate tales of cursed Native American burial grounds, possessed former slaves in the South and the demonic spirits of those who have suffered gruesome murders. Ethical failures, Thompson says, are at the root of what haunts us.

“Ethics transcend the pragmatic and transcend the world of the living,” Thompson says. “There’s an idea built here, an ethical idea in ghost belief, in haunting ghosts, that you can’t really get away with evil. If you murder somebody and cover it up, you will still be haunted by that, and that can be on a personal level, and then it can also be on a societal level.”

Thompson divides apparitions into two categories: wanted ghosts or unwanted, friendly or unfriendly.

“We tend to really notice the other ones, these are problematic ghosts that haunt us,” Thompson says. “Why does a ghost haunt? And one thing we can say about that is that, if you look at a society, it’s a very interesting question to ask, ‘What is this society haunted by?’”

Those who have failed society and, simultaneously, those who have been failed by society, are presumed by ghost hunters and paranormal enthusiasts to come back from the dead, seeking revenge on the living.

The collective guilt that manifests itself from our subconsciousness to our physical reality serves a purpose. Ghosts keep a piece of our history alive.

What growing up South Asian teaches girls — and how they overcome those lessons 33

“Don’t go out in the sun for too long! You’ll get too dark.”

These words from my mother echoed in my 6-year-old head throughout my early adolescence and into my teens. I grew up avoiding the sun at all costs, exercising caution when going out with my friends in the summer and scrubbing viciously at the darker folds in my skin in the shower, thinking that would lift the pigment I was taught to despise.

She thanks her one Pakistani friend in seventh grade, as well as TikTok, for giving her the confidence to speak about embracing Desi girls’ features, such as bigger noses, hyperpigmentation and thick hair, and aims to stop the comparison and idealization of Eurocentric beauty standards.

It didn’t just stop at hating my skin — I started noticing other features I had that my classmates didn’t, and I found myself in this toxic trap of comparing my looks to theirs. I couldn’t help but notice when we changed into our gym uniforms that I was the only girl with hair on her stomach. My 12-year-old self felt like there was something wrong.

Growing up in a predominantly white area, I felt singled out, never having seen a girl in school who looked like me.

Kashf Fatima, the vice president of Columbia College Chicago’s Muslim Student Association, says the key reason she became involved with MSA was to find more people like her on campus, especially after transferring from Elmhurst University.

At 20, I finally un-learned what I’d been taught for years. There was nothing wrong with spending more time outside and getting darker, as I accepted that my body was not just one shade of brown. I found out that body hair was normal. Throughout my years of growing up with social media, I slowly came to the realization that I was not the only one who grew up like this. Many brown girls just like me had similar experiences, where white-washed beauty standards were imposed on them — even from their own families.

“I realized that I missed seeing other Muslims on campus, because obviously it’s a majority white school, and you want to see your own people — the same people you share food and have shared experiences with,” says Fatima, a junior marketing and digital media major.

Social media influencer Mina Hasan started her TikTok in 2019, by filming vlogs of her life on her trip to Pakistan, as well as the miniseries that caused her to go viral: “Life of a Brown Girl.” Now with 192,100 followers and counting, Hasan curates content that covers skincare, fashion and beauty for South Asian women and girls. She offers advice, addresses topics such as the sexism and double standards in many Desi households and helps embrace their natural and ethnic features, using the handle @recklessmina. (“Desi” refers to people of Indian, Pakistani, or Bangladeshi descent.)

“I wanted to make my niche based off of helping girls who have been in these situations because as I learned from TikTok, I’m not the only one that had these experiences,” Hasan says.

Hasan based many of her videos off questions she received from girls asking for advice on topics from how to convince your parents to let you study abroad to buying specific articles of clothing.

From as early as kindergarten, it had hit Hasan that she did not look like her peers, as she recalls being the only child in her class with a unibrow.

“For the longest time, I just bottled everything up,” Hasan says. “Then I had one really good friend, and both of us were each other’s outlets for the problems we only face that we can’t tell to our white or our Black friends. That was our coping mechanism.”

MSA aims to unify the Muslim and Desi communities at Columbia and educate others on the culture. Through MSA, Fatima found peers who also struggled with the colorist beauty standards she grew up with.

“Colorism is such a huge issue in our community, especially with bleach cream being promoted, like Fair and Lovely,” Fatima says. “Even within my family I’ve had people tell my mom things like, ‘Don’t let Kashf get any darker than this.’”

Growing up watching Bollywood movies and music videos with glamorized actresses like Aishwarya Rai, Fatima internalized colorism and villainized herself. As a young girl, she compared her own features to Rai’s fair skin and light-colored eyes.

“I was obsessed with that for a while, and that gave me false hopes where it’s like, ‘When I grow older, I definitely want to look like that,’ without knowing how genetics work,” Fatima says.

For Samaher AbuRabah, the struggle of having more hair and bushier brows than her peers had her begging her mother to let her get them waxed.

“I did my eyebrows for the first time when I was literally in fifth grade because they were so humongous,” says the Columbia College Chicago journalism and public relations sophomore.

So, she straightened her thick, curly hair, and if her arms weren’t waxed, she wore sweaters to school. AbuRabah felt a lack of cultural support that went beyond beauty standards. Without an ethnic community or peers to relate to, she struggled to explain to teachers why she had to miss school for religious holidays, such as Eid. “There wasn’t really an understanding of Muslim holidays,” AbuRabah says. “People weren’t knowledgeable about what being Muslim entails, so I found myself having to explain myself a lot, and as a young kid, you don’t really know your religion a lot.”

At George Mason University, the college has an Indian Student Association that aims to combat similar issues. Offering both a community for the campus’s Desi students as well as an opportunity for non-Desi peers to get educated on the culture, the group is overseen by its faculty advisor and Information Sciences and Technology term professor Kamaljeet Sanghera.

Sanghera explains that ISA provides not only a chance for the students to meet others on campus, but also a way for faculty to get involved and network. The group also provides a space that feels like home for

ISA Vice President and Treasurer Neha Sehgal says the group aims to bring everyone together, share the culture and offer a chance to help validate the ways members have felt coming from a large, diverse mix of cultural groups.

Sehgal first got involved with the group her freshman year after wanting to find more students like her at the university. Prioritizing diversity, ISA’s board has students from both north and south India as well as Pakistan, and different religious groups.

“The main focus is to bring all of India together because there’s always a lot of division between north and south Indians, and that is pretty prevalent in our school as well,” Sehgal says. “Our goal is to bring everybody together and see us all as one from the same place, rather than the same place but different parts.”

With the rise of Desi influencers sharing their platforms to showcase their features, inclusivity can have a chance to flourish. From South Asian influencers Milan Mathew interlacing culture with fashion to Cas Jerome showing that brown girls can create cosplay characters regardless of how dark their skin is, the future of what is seen as “glamorous” can acknowledge the diversity of beauty. Ending the colorist and unhealthy narrative that one specific look is beautiful once and for all allows a spotlight for people from all different cultures to feel pride and shine.

Like Father, Like Daughter Teaching You Football Like My Dad Taught Me By Olivia Covey

My family has had season tickets to Michigan State University football games since before I was born. Our seats were always in the same place – the top of the lower half of the stadium – high up to give us a perfect view of the whole field.

Family friends had tickets behind one of the end zones. Sometimes my mom would take me down to those seats so that I could watch the cheerleaders and wave to Sparty, the team’s mascot. One day, I decided I was over the frills. I turned to my mom and said, “Can we go back to the up seats? I can see the field better up there.” Clearly my 5-year-old priorities were set on football. But who could blame me? My dad made sure that I knew the game from nearly the day I was born.

The other nine spots are filled by guards, tackles, tight ends, running backs and wide receivers. The defensive line is made up of a combination of nose guards, tackles, backs and defensive ends. Depending on the play, the defensive coordinator will adjust how many “down guys” and linebackers there are. Down guys stay low, and linebackers stand up.

Their job is to make sure the offense doesn’t get far down the field.

How a team lines up its offense can make or break their game, and the opposing team’s defense has to be ready for whatever comes. John Holecek, the head coach of the varsity football team at Loyola Academy in suburban Wilmette, says mental strength and preparation are just as important as physical ability.

My dad, Bill Covey, has dedicated years of his life to playing and coaching football, and sharing his love and knowledge of the sport with me has brought us closer. He has put in hours watching games with me, explaining the parts I didn’t understand and being impressed when I pick up on something he didn’t expect me to. My dad has always instilled in me the importance of being a good teammate, regardless of the team I’m on, and the discipline he passed down to me has given me a strong work ethic, ambition and perseverance.

Jaworski describes football as a metaphor for life, and I couldn’t agree more. Look past the aggression and confusing rules, and you’ll see football is about coming together regardless of our differences. I think we can all benefit from that.

Jacob Jaworksi is the head coach of the varsity football team at Joliet Catholic Academy, which holds multiple state titles. Looking from the outside in, Jaworski says spectators can get confused when it comes to a play being “successful” or not, because success doesn’t always mean points being scored.

“The offense is trying to create space on the field for the player with the ball, while the defense is trying to limit space,” Jaworski says. “The result of each play usually comes down to which side executes the best.”

While points aren’t the only indicators of success, they do decide the game. You’ve heard of a touchdown; here’s how it works: When the team playing offense gets the ball into their end zone, they get six points.

There are several ways to score points, but here are the most important.

After a touchdown, the team can kick the ball through the uprights for one extra point or run the ball into the end zone again for two extra points. A field goal looks like an extra point kick, but it can be attempted at any time anywhere on the field, and it’s worth three points.

The winner of the game is the team with the most points on the scoreboard when the fourth quarter timer runs out. But coaches, players and fans get more from the game than wins and losses.

“I think it’s the ultimate meritocracy. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what you look like,” Holecek says. “With the amount of different types of people, it’s really a melting pot of the sports world.”

Stage Act or Death Wish?

How Paige Thompson flirts with ‘death’ in her illusionary stage performances

By Kamy Smelser Magician and illusionist Paige Thompson dangles upside down while squirming her way out of a straitjacket. She has 60 seconds to escape before sharp metal jaws clamp down on her entire body.

Thompson has one goal in mind — to put you on the edge of your seat.

the Chicago Magic Lounge for four years, says prevention and preparation come with learning how to jump correctly and land on supportive padding. These practices come with the comfort of many safety precautions put in place before her performance, such as practicing how to escape a straitjacket, first of all.

“This is not an illusion. Real danger is involved,” she says, sporting ripped black tights and magenta hair, as she introduces her act to an Apollo Theater audience. “My complete focus is required.”

“I wasn’t an escape artist in any way,” she says, looking back at her past performances of Jaws of Death. “I just had to figure it out and be like, ‘I want this to look good. I want it to look real.’”

As Thompson is tied into a straitjacket, she declares she will upstage escape artist Harry Houdini. In 1917, he performed a similar straitjacket act, hanging from a crane 60 feet in the air.

Thompson has been performing magic since she was 11. Growing up, she relied on the sole support of her grandmother, who scheduled her first gigs, made her business cards and continually encouraged her to pursue her passion of card tricks and illusions.

The performance takes Thompson to a new level; this time she’s performing it on the TV show “Showtime at the Apollo.”

Host Steve Harvey is anxiously pacing the stage, as audience members gasp and cover their eyes.

When she talks later about what it’s like to perform the act, she says she was never actually worried about death, but more about getting injured.

“It’s terrifying. Just jumping down from being up in the air, I could break my legs,” she says.

“How do I prevent that?”

Thompson still gets nervous before performing a dangerous act like the Jaws of Death. Before she walks on stage, she sometimes watches a baseball game on her phone to distract herself from what she’s about to do.

“When you’re calm, you can escape [the straitjacket],” Thompson says.

Thompson put herself in danger again when she joined magicians Penn and Teller on their television show “Fool Us.” While on stage, she pulls from a black box a bottle of nitric acid, a bottle of water, four empty shot glasses, a pair of safety glasses and a pair of gloves. Nitric

acid, which is poisonous, is used in fertilizers and explosives.

After pouring water into three of the shot glasses, Thompson pours nitric acid into the fourth, places them all onto a turntable and gives it a spin. She then gives Penn the honor of picking which glass to drink first. She hesitates before drinking from the first three, then drops a metal spoon in the fourth shot glass. It melts in reaction to the nitric acid she somehow avoided.

then has a volunteer pull the thread out of her mouth, hoping the needle is attached to the thread.

Thompson’s sister, Nicole Thompson, grew up watching Paige perform magic, but still has to be reassured that her sister will be safe, and that her acts, such as swallowing sharp hooks and needles, are just for show.

“Seeing her personality and confidence come to life doing these dangerous acts is really amazing,” Nicole Thompson says. “Of course, these illusions also make me nervous, but I know she knows what she is doing.”

Of course, Thompson keeps the secrets of her tricks to herself. Magicians don’t have to sign a blood oath of silence, she explains, but once they join the community, they commit to keeping others from learning their tricks.

“Once the rest of the world knows [our secrets], they’re not going to be entertained by us, they’re just going to think it’s stupid,” Thompson says.

Luis Carreon, a close-up magician and a founder of the Chicago Magic Lounge, says some magicians’ tricks still baffle him — especially those that appear to put even a well-prepared performer’s life in danger.

Carreon says Murphy’s Law (“Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”) could always come into play.

“Even though the audience believes [a performance] is a trick, you’d be surprised to find they are not,” says Carreon.

Within Thompson’s pursuit of close-up and large-scale magic, she describes herself as one of the few world-class female magicians taking the stage in a male-dominated industry. Even when she approaches a table to perform close-up magic, audience members sometimes give her their dinner order, mistakenly thinking she’s the server.

“It’s just weird that we get these images [of women magicians] in our heads, and we just associate that’s what magic is. It’s not,” she says.

Back at the Apollo Theater, Thompson dangles as she struggles her way out of the straitjacket in front of an anxious audience.

With five seconds left on the clock, Thompson fights her way out of the straitjacket and lands on the pad below as the metal jaws slam shut above her. She smiles as she gets off the floor, and receives a standing ovation as she prances off the stage.

By Camryn Cutinello After a quick trip to Party City 10 years ago, Christopher English donned a plastic wig, some red face paint and an out-of-the-bag costume, and put an empty paint can over his right hand to represent Hellboy’s Hand of Doom. He went to a comic book convention and saw people in elaborate costumes representing hundreds of different characters.

“I was like, ‘I want to do this all the time, I want to do this every weekend,’” English says. “And that’s when I found out that it’s called cosplay.”

Cosplay (short for costume play) is a performance art form where people create elaborate costumes that mimic their favorite characters in movies, TV shows and comics.

Since English’s first convention, he has created about 50 to 60 costumes, taking anywhere from a week or a year to create, and costing anywhere from $600 to $1,000.

English wears his costumes to conventions, movie premieres and advanced screenings, libraries and charity events.

Monica Paprocki from Chicago professionally creates costumes for companies. She also competes, participating in the Crown Championships of Cosplay in Chicago.

Paprocki, who works as an accountant, says she always knew she wanted to be an artist. She has a degree in psychology and accounting, but always knew she would return to art. After entering a contest hosted by Marvel

Comics in which she dressed up as Galacta, daughter of Galactus, Paprocki found her way back to art.

She says she fell in love with the way cosplay mixes fashion and architecture.

“We always advise people to be mindful of how they cosplay characters, meaning a person’s skin color is not a costume.”

“I got hooked doing competitions because of the technical aspects of putting that stuff together,” Paprocki says. “On top of just showing off my creativity that way, was just a whole other level of something that I’ve never really thought was possible.”

Carolyn Nguyen, a singer from Orange County, California, also says she loved the creative process in making a cosplay, particularly picking out the wigs and makeup.

Nguyen, known online as Kitty Antics, first started creating costumes when she was 14, and hasn’t looked back since. She has cosplayed as Pocahontas, Maleficent and did a female version of Pennywise, even writing a song about the character.

“Most of the characters that I cosplay are very, very powerful, empowered and really strong females — the essence of a really strong female,” she says.

When the pandemic hit, Paprocki feared her cosplay business would dry up. Instead, she was busier than ever. She gathered a bunch of cosplayers in the Chicagoland area and made masks to donate to hospitals. She also attended panels and continued to create costumes.

Another part of cosplay for both English and Paprocki is teaching others.

Paprocki began streaming on Twitch while making costumes, giving her viewers the opportunity to ask her questions. Pre-pandemic, English hosted classes in his house, inviting newer cosplayers over to teach them the skills needed to create a costume.

Paprocki says part of teaching beginners is to also remind them to be respectful of people’s cultures and identities when cosplaying.

“Cosplay whoever you feel makes you happiest, and as long as you don’t do in any way to offend others, then you’re having fun, and that’s the point of cosplay,” Binghay says.

English says his favorite part of cosplay is the community, and how cosplay connects people.

“When you enter the community of cosplay, you meet people from all over the country at these conventions, sometimes all over the world,” English says. “And you get to experience so many different cultures and ways of life.”

If you want to get involved in cosplay, Paprocki has some advice for you: Keep your first costume simple; don’t be intimidated by the more experienced cosplayers. Start with a simple design, and then work your way up. She says it’s called costume play for a reason; it’s supposed to be fun.

“We always advise people to be mindful of how they cosplay characters, meaning a person’s skin color is not a costume,” Paprocki says. “Always keep in mind people’s culture and be respectful of people’s appearances and culture when you cosplay. That’s another really big part that we advocate.”

Janelle Binghay, a 22-year-old from Algonquin, Illinois, started cosplaying when she was about 14. Despite working at JO-ANN fabric and craft store, she says she is not the best seamstress. Using a mix of handmade materials and thrifting, Binghay is still able to create her costumes.

Her favorite cosplay is Moana. When she dresses as the Disney princess, children get the most excited, and line up for a chance to hug her and snap a picture. The cosplay community isn’t judgmental, welcoming all skin colors, genders and sexualities, Binghay says. It doesn’t matter how much you look like the original character, she adds, as long as you enjoyed creating the costume.

Falling Through the Cracks Autistic people of color fight for services

By Hayden Mears Kayden Byard could never quite place what made him different. Byard grew up unsure of where he fit. The first psychologist he sought out was unhelpful. The doctor brought out an old copy of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders and read Byard the criteria for an autism diagnosis as if they were items on a grocery list.

The doctor then closed the book and told Byard that he didn’t check the boxes.

Discouraged but undeterred, Byard, who’s Black, pushed on. He knew himself better than anyone and felt a strong connection to many autistic traits. He went from doctor to doctor, expert to expert, in search of an answer, until he was eventually diagnosed with autism at 18.

“I was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder. Any time I saw a therapist, they kind of just went back to that original diagnosis,” says Byard, now 21 and a respite caregiver at Clearbrook, a Chicago-based group that works with people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Eventually, Byard found a therapist who listened to his concerns.

A referral to one of his colleagues led to testing and a diagnosis Byard’s difficulty getting diagnosed is emblematic of a larger problem: Autistic people of color get less access to treatment because they are diagnosed less than white people. According to the National Library of Medicine, Black and Hispanic children are more likely to be diagnosed with a non-autism related disorder or experience significant delays before receiving an autism diagnosis. And autism characteristics are often viewed as misbehavior, rather than a disorder, which can amplify racial stereotypes.

Dr. Peter J. Smith, associate professor of pediatrics at University of Chicago, recalls an instance where this misconception put a former patient of his at risk.

“He was physically a large person, a young autistic man of color,” Smith says. “It was summertime in Chicago and he was driving with his family with the top down in the car. One of his habits was echolalia, which meant someone would say something and he’d say it right back to them. They had parked, and someone swore at something near the car. He swore right back and ended up putting members of the car at physical risk. Someone pulled a gun because they thought he was being threatening.”

Smith was grateful that everyone walked away from the situation unhurt, but he stressed the prevalence of similar situations. “The more common example is someone of that age getting taken down

by security or police.”

Jackie Spinner, executive producer of the documentary “Don’t Forget Me,” says children of color have had the hardest time getting diagnoses.

“What my research has told me is that it’s access to the diagnosis. It’s expensive, Spinner says. Her documentary explores the challenges faced by Moroccan families with autistic children.

“Some of the behaviors associated with autism are brushed off, particularly among young boys of color. It’s not seen through the lens of a developmental issue,” says Spinner, who’s an associate professor of journalism at Columbia College Chicago.

However, more children are being diagnosed with autism. In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that one in 150 children was diagnosed with autism; in 2018 that number was one in 44 children.

According to the CDC, in 2012, white children were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at higher rates than Black and Hispanic children. However, those discrepancies dropped two years later, when more Black and Hispanic children received diagnoses.

Morénike Giwa Onaiwu, who is a writer, researcher and autism advocate, says the profiling and stereotyping that people of color endure daily influences their willingness to seek an autism diagnosis. Parents of color do not want to add another label to their children, who already face stereotypes based on the color of their skin. The diversity of circumstance adds to the issue.

Onaiwu lived in international housing with their parents for years, making many of their differences less obvious. It wasn’t until their family moved out of international housing that things changed.

“I spoke differently, I moved differently, I got in trouble a lot for answering things I didn’t realize were rhetorical questions,” Onaiwu says. “My parents were called to have meetings about me very early on. But initially they just thought it was giftedness because they had me tested and my IQ was high. So I moved to the gifted classes and all the kids there were quirky. That helped me fall between the cracks.”

Onaiwu’s parents, who were immigrants, didn’t pick up on some of their habits and didn’t mention them to a doctor.

“They never told the pediatrician, ‘Oh, she doesn’t make eye contact.’” she says. “They thought a lot of things I did, like playing by myself or lining things up, was just orderly.”

The stakes are high for undiagnosed people; without a diagnosis, resources aren’t accessible. Without support, life is infinitely more difficult.

Jesus People USA reaches 50 years of ‘intentional Christian community’ in the heart of Uptown

By Kamy Smelser When Tom Crozier, a man with unapologetically long, curly hair, sits in the garden room of the Jesus People USA commune, the light radiating through the window behind him creates a glowing silhouette around his head. It’s a fitting image, considering he’s telling the story of the religious community he’s called home for 29 years.

A 10-story apartment complex in the Chicago Uptown neighborhood with a facade of red and white brick is situated on Wilson Avenue, just east of Sheridan Road. The building, which is a neighbor to Citizen Skate Shop and Everybody’s Coffee, greets you with an elegant chandelier over the entryway, as residents and visitors of all kinds come through the front door.

each summer for the 28 years it was still running, according to the Jesus People USA website. After visiting JPUSA with his wife, Laura, in 1993, the couple decided it would be their new home. Crozier and his wife have raised their five children, ranging in age from nine to 29, in the commune.

“I’ve found a place where I can be me,” says Crozier who works as the JPUSA visitor host and “Bi-Vocational” licensed minister at the Evangelical People is a congregation of.

Train-hopping to JPUSA Many members of JPUSA come as artists, photographers and musicians, Crozier says. One member, Rich Troche, joined Jesus People as a skateboarding, coffee enthusiast. Now, Troche manages Everybody’s Coffee, one of the 10 JPUSA businesses.

This apartment complex is home to around 200 members of Jesus People USA or JPUSA — pronounced “jah-poo-za.”

Jesus People came to fruition 50 years ago amid the ’70s Jesus Movement after a bus full of young, Christian hippies broke down in Chicago, as the group tells their story. They came with the mission of “boldly sharing the Gospel message.”

“We are Jesus people, we really dig who Jesus was, and we dig what Jesus did,” Crozier says.

Crozier came across JPUSA after attending the Cornerstone Festival with his church. The music festival drew in around 20,000 attendees

This wasn’t Troche’s first community-style living experience, as he had previously lived in a 15-person farming community in Oklahoma.

Outside of group living, he considered himself a lost boy, free in the wind, as he hopped trains across America. Troche, who has a face tattoo of two thin, black lines jutting out from his right eye and wears black gauges in his ears, considered himself an anarchist back in his train-hopping years.

Eventually, after joining another group in a not-for-profit traveling caravan, he shoveled snow for a fellow train-hopper in Minneapolis. While traveling through Chicago he had come across JPUSA and began asking himself questions about his spirituality and views about God. 47

“For somebody who had just been traveling and doing whatever, [JPUSA] was a sign of something new to try,” Troche says.

Three moms and a ‘common purse’ Crozier says most of the community are now empty-nesters in their 50s and older, but families such as Crozier’s have experienced the unconventional life of raising a family among their fellow commune members.

Parents have their own apartment while their children’s rooms are either next door or down the hall from them. For Crozier, he says his family never felt unsafe with a hallway separating him from his kids, as nobody lived down the hall, and they also kept a baby monitor in each room.

“We are Jesus people, we really dig who Jesus was, and we dig what Jesus did.”

In order for the many members and families to remain in the commune rent-free, JPUSA has centralized its money to pay the bills.

Crozier says, every Friday, the commune’s three “moms” purchase the commune’s food, toiletries and other necessities in bulk and then drops them off at each residents’ door.

JPUSA runs on a shared bank account, or what the members refer to as the commune’s “common purse,” which everyone can request money from but must contribute to by working at one of the commune’s businesses.

“If the businesses are doing well, people like me could request date money, and my wife and I go out to eat or go to the movies,” Crozier says. “And if the businesses are not doing well, we all suffer together.”

JPUSA’s businesses are open to the public and spread throughout the heart of Uptown, such as Citizen’s Skate Shop, Everybody’s Coffee and Grrr Records.

When buying any kind of necessity, a member can make a request on an online platform, and all members have access to.

Inside the free store Clifton Avenue, a one-way alley also known as “Blood Alley,” is about a 10-minute walk west of JPUSA. The alleyway, which was once rumored to be a gathering place for gangs and drug addicts in the early ‘70s, has since turned into a makeshift art gallery featuring work created by local artists. and several flights of stairs up, is in an industrial-style open room where rows of donated clothes and shoes are organized as a store for those less fortunate. Since joining Jesus People in August 2021 with her husband, artist Gary Thomas, Kim Thomas has run the free store.

“We had this one guy come in, and he was looking for dress clothes for a job interview, so we dressed him from head to toe with shoes, socks, a tie, a nice button down shirt and dress pants,” Kim Thomas says.

“The smile on his face is what sealed the deal.”

Conflict and reconciliation In 2014, former JPUSA member Jaime Prater released “No Place to Call Home,” a documentary about former JPUSA children. The former members, now adults, told their stories of alleged sexual abuse and assault within the commune from 1974 to 1998. The film was released during the same year a lawsuit was filed by Prater against the commune and the Evangelical Covenant Church. The lawsuit was later dismissed for want of prosecution. Prater could not be reached to comment in time for publication.

With over 70 former members reaching out to Prater, the impact of this documentary was one the public and Jesus People could not ignore. Andrea Spicer, a member of JPUSA’s pastoral leadership team, says that after the documentary was released, the members of Jesus People had experienced shame in acknowledging their membership to this community. “[We shouldn’t be] cutting cakes and blowing up balloons and celebrating without having something in place where people could say, ‘I was there for 10 years, and it was really great, but at the end this and that happened, and that’s always been a hurtful thing to [former members],’” Spicer says.

Spicer, a Jesus People member since 1985, says eight years after the documentary came out, they are working to put in place a process that will allow past members to be apologized to and can experience reconciliation.

In the documentary, Prater calls the community a “religious cult.” While Spicer says that although JPUSA has a centralized financial system through their common purse, they don’t have a centralized leadership position, and people can come and go when they please.

“What exactly constitutes a cult?” Spicer asks. “The way we live can absolutely have some elements of what you would find [in a cult], but the major thing differentiating a cult to the community is we do not have one single leader.”

“It’s hard to predict the future of JPUSA,” Crozier says. “One of our former leadership team members often described living in our community as ‘living in the midst of a miracle on the edge of disaster.’”

Spicer says the commune isn’t attracting young people, which means the group could die out, leaving those even on the leadership team without a clue of what the group will become.

“I think that a lot of us get up and still feel called to do what we’re doing, and ministries that were involved in that are really meaningful to us,” Spicer says. “[We’re] just trying to be faithful to what it is that we’re called to.”

‘Living in the midst of a miracle’ After 50 years, JPUSA now houses mainly an older community, with 16 children, ranging from newborns to high-schoolers. Crozier guessed that half of JPUSA members are now over 50, and he holds lightly the future of what JPUSA will become.

Fifty years after its founding, Jesus People’s members still strive to pattern their lives after Jesus’, living in a close community and spreading their mission. Whether that looks like donating their time in the free store or offering couch surfers a place to stay for the night, Jesus People and its members dig the way Jesus lived and hope to represent that in the way they live.

Before Becoming an Au Pair... …Learn from those with experience

By Valeria Mancera-Saavedra Illustrations by Hannah Tonn Belen Ortiz’s journey as an au pair began when she traveled from her home of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to the U.S. With few job opportunities at home, Ortiz was unemployed and needed to find a way to make money to help support her family. So, she decided to follow her sister’s path of becoming a nanny abroad.

People join the au pair program for many reasons, such as going to school, earning money and learning about a new culture.

“I never loved the idea of being an au pair. My sister once was an au pair and had a terrible experience, but I thought it was better to do something and earn money than to do nothing,” Ortiz says.

During online interviews with her first family, Ortiz noticed some red flags, as she calls them, because of the way the mom interacted with the kids, but ignored them and stayed positive about the job.

Soon after Ortiz arrived at her host family’s home, she says, the host mom became angry with her over a box that had been left on a counter, and Ortiz decided to spend the weekend in her room, where she felt safer. She called her au pair agency and asked to be rematched with a different family.

However, her situation did not improve. Her new family expected her to do extra work beyond caring for the children, including cooking, cleaning and laundry, which she says she wasn’t paid for.

“Once you become an au pair, you must know all of your rights because you are the only one who is able to defend them,” Ortiz says.

Au pairs come to the United States on a J-1 visa, which is a nonimmigrant visa for individuals approved to participate in a work study exchange program. Au pairs can live with their host families for up to two years while attending post-secondary school and working as a nanny for the family.

Au pairs are not supposed to work more than 10 hours a day and 45 hours a week, according to the State Department, which oversees au pair programs. They receive room and board, up to $500 per year for educational costs and at least $195 each week for their work.

Alliance for International Exchange, which represents au pair placement agencies, cites high rates of satisfaction reported by au pairs. However, au pair programs have been criticized for misrepresenting what the experience will be like for au pairs and host families.

Terence Burke, a spokesperson for the au pair agency Cultural Care, says most au pairs have a positive experience with the program, but challenges arise.

When they do, Cultural Care speaks with both the au pair and the host family to hear complaints, and investigate any allegations that have been made, Burke says. They attempt to resolve the issue, but when they cannot, they work to move the au pair.

Carolina Rodrigues, 25, traveled from Brazil to Illinois in 2019, and says although she initially struggled to adapt to being away from her country and family, her experience was ultimately a positive one.

“When I came here, I had no idea what it would be like, but it turned out amazingly. I’m lucky,” she says.

Rodrigues’ host family supported her and showed interest in learning about her culture.

“I feel that we are an amazing match. The relationship we have is both personal and professional. They are so open minded about learning about myself and my country,” she says Another au pair, who will be called Melissa to protect her identity, did not have such a positive experience. After a lengthy process to get her visa and work permit, she traveled from Mexico to Maryland, where her first host family lived.

proficient in English, according to State Department rules, but some still use Google Translate in order to better communicate with their host families.

Whenever the lady of the house spoke to Pico, she repeatedly asked if she could understand her, even though Pico continually told her yes.

“My agency promised me a lot of things. I was promised my private room once I moved in with a family, my own car to move around the city and paid days off,” Melissa says.

“It was as if I didn’t exist. She would say bad and rude things about me in front of me,” Pico says. “She insisted that it’d be better if I just went back to Colombia.”

Before matching with her first family, Melissa used a Facebook group created and run by au pairs to read reviews of potential host families.

However, Pico says her au pair work helped with her personal growth because it helped her recognize her own worth.

She learned that the family she had been placed with was criticized on the Facebook group for their treatment of past au pairs; however, she opted to work with the family anyway. Over video calls, she says, they didn’t seem like bad people.

It’s important that future au pairs not commit to a program without first being sure of the decision and being informed, she says.

Melissa flew to her new home and was well-received by the family.

As days passed, however, she realized that her host family changed agreed-upon rules, and before things got worse, she left the au pair program to live with relatives in a different city, which hadn’t been her plan.

“Take your time and get to know the families before making a decision,” Melissa advises prospective au pairs. “Also, get to know the city, do some research about the place you are going to.”

Despite the challenges, Melissa is grateful for the opportunity to travel.

She met other au pairs with whom she has created friendships, and expanded her cultural knowledge more than she could have imagined.

“Ask as many questions as possible; make video calls with the children.

It helps you a lot to realize what the family is like,” Pico says. “If possible, put everything in writing in a contract.”

To avoid confusion between au pairs and families, Ortiz says it’s important to be clear that while it’s possible to have a very good relationship with the family, workers shouldn’t assume that they will always be treated as just another family member.

An au pair’s experience can be rewarding — for both the au pair and their host family. Before accepting a job, potential au pairs should communicate with their potential family in order to have a positive cultural exchange, while living far from home.

Evelyn Pico, 23, came from Bogota, Colombia, to the United States.

She worked for families in Colorado and Illinois, had bad experiences with both, and found a temporary, third family.

Bilingual speakers face heartbreak of losing fluency in their mother language

By Kimberly Kapela Illustrations by Hannah Tonn For first generation immigrants, the heartbreak that comes with forgetting a first language is a shared pain. I know this firsthand. I lost my mother language, Russian, at 7 years old when I went to predominantly English speaking classrooms and wasn’t surrounded by anyone who spoke Russian.

Eventually, I stopped calling relatives overseas and got anxious when my mother handed me the phone.

Over time, words start to scramble, grammar becomes less complex and the mother language begins to coexist with the new language. The phenomenon of “Oh, I forgot that word,” is commonly referred to as first language attrition.

First language attrition occurs when bilingual speakers experience problems remembering some words or are blocked by a word from the other language, unable to retrieve the native one, according to the Language Attrition Network.

Native language attrition is reversible, but for many bilingual speakers, their first language is rooted with a deeper sense of identity, culture and socialization with other native speakers.

Nasim Ellahi, a first generation immigrant from Pakistan, lost touch with his mother language of Urdu when attending high school.

“Some of the barriers I experienced with forgetting my native language is not being able to communicate as fluently as I would 52

like, especially with my mother or my family back home in Pakistan,” Ellahi says. “I think due to immigrants coming to America and trying to assimilate, American culture makes us forget about our native language, and it’s equally as hard for immigrants to keep track of two languages.”

Immigrants can also suppress their native language due to possible trauma when assimilating to American culture. Ellahi suppresses his language so he doesn’t become a target of a possible hate crime.

Ellahi’s advice for building inclusivity toward bilingual speakers is to appreciate that languages are “beautiful” and “unique,” instead of shaming them.

Before studying elementary and English as a second language (ESL) education, Jessica Riccelli seamlessly switched back and forth between English and Italian. She can understand Italian perfectly, but formulating sentences in her head to respond proves to be a harder task.

Riccelli grew up in an Italian household where her mother would speak Italian as the dominant language, but after turning 6, Riccelli was exposed to more English in grade school. Now, she senses an “awkwardness” speaking Italian while celebrating religious holidays with her family.

Her parents made the decision to speak English in the home to encourage the language. Due to their decision, Riccelli is relearning her Italian fluency, as it provides closure since the passing of her grandmother.

“I would love to be able to get that fluency back because it’s something that I miss, especially since my nona passed away,” Riccelli says.

“I hope to be able to carry Italian on to my future kids and not lose it any more than I already have.”

Riccelli currently works with fifth grade students at Haynes Elementary in Chinatown, many of them have Mandarin as their first language. “[My approach to ESL education] allows students within the class to learn from other students because they have a lot more peer engagement and learning tips and tricks from students in their classroom versus only learning from an educator,” Riccelli says.

Riccelli sees a lot of bias when bilingual speakers don’t speak English in the U.S. “From an educator standpoint, I think there’s a lot of really cool things we can integrate into our classrooms,” Riccelli says. “We’re not only accepting these people, but you also have to be able to celebrate those differences and make all students aware of it.”

There are certain societal pressures for immigrants to fit into their new environments

and communities. Sumana Syed is part of the Muslim Student Association at Columbia College Chicago and felt a “disconnect” growing up with her grandparents because she didn’t make an effort to learn Urdu.

When attending her local mosque, Syed prays with immigrants from India who only knew how to speak Urdu, so she couldn’t communicate with the worshippers. “I always felt disconnected from my roots in a way, but as I’m growing up, I started to make an effort to reconnect with my culture and have a new appreciation for it,” Syed says.

Besides teaching AP statistics at Fenton High School, Cushing has an ESL endorsement and observed “great strides” in furthering ESL education and preserving cultures of Fenton’s students.

Cushing shows interest in students’ cultures by playing music from Spanish artists in her classrooms and learning their language. “I’ll try to speak Spanish to them in the classroom so that they get the sense that I really value

In her home state of Texas, Syed’s classmates took ESL classes where teachers would separate Spanishspeaking kids from Englishnative kids. Looking back, Syed wishes there had been more chances for ESL students to share their mother languages to build a diverse community.

“It’s really cool how everybody communicates in different ways and how every language has its own tone and different way of expressing things,” Syed says. “Other languages express things in their own way, so I don’t think we should shy away from a language because it’s not our own language.

[We] should be more open to exploring new languages and expressing them and learning from them.”

Gibel Cushing was born in the Philippines and later lost touch with the Tagalog language after moving to the U.S. When she visits family in the Philippines, it’s a challenging and alienating experience, she says, and the language barrier makes her feel like she’s not a full-fledged Filipino.

After moving to the U.S. in the ’90s, Cushing was placed into an ESL program that restricted her ability to speak English and Tagalog fluently. “I don’t think they [ESL

their culture,” Cushing says. “I think with these little, tiny opportunities, I try to seek them out when I can, so I can make it very clear that my bilingual students are always welcome.”

Though Russian doesn’t feel as natural to me, the beauty of my first language can be celebrated through my family dinners, church gatherings and holidays.

The harmful effects of borrowing from someone else’s culture

By Camryn Cutinello With the world going into lockdown March of 2020, people found themselves with a seemingly never-ending supply of free time. Some turned to bread making or knitting, some started exercising daily, and others turned to spirituality.

Malia Valentine, whose grandmother was part of the Unangan tribe from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, says the pandemic also led people to search for healing through ancestral roots.

“I think building a relationship with yourself and your own ancestors, and your own ancestors’ story can really bring about a lot of healing, and, I think, a feeling of belonging that is maybe being sought after from looking at other people’s culture,” Valentine says.

Valentine said many Americans don’t have a strong connection to their own ancestors and cultural background anymore. Because of this, some have turned to cultures that are not their own.

The use of white sage to cleanse a room or person is one such popular practice among the spiritual community taken from Indigenous communities. It’s used in smudging, an Indigenous practice in which sacred herbs are burned for a ritual. Now, due to overharvesting of the plant, Indigenous people and conservationists have warned that white sage could be in danger of extinction.

Chakras, yoga, spirit animals and dream catchers have also been repurposed and mass marketed to the general public, ignoring the initial cultures they came from.

“It’s so much easier to see that sage plant, or that song, or that ceremony as just an object, some sort of isolated object that is just existing on its own, ready to be consumed,” Valentine says. “Instead of seeing it as its own entity, with its own deep, deep, deep stories, and its own large, large web of relationships.”

Valentine meets with Indigenous communities across the country, helping them protect their land and sacred sites; currently, she’s working with the Winnemem Wintu tribe of Northern California.

In doing this work, Valentine says, she’s seen the harmful effects of cultural appropriation firsthand.

“There’s this pretty strong feeling of entitlement to the lands on the mountain, and in the spring, and even when the Winnemem Wintu are there, and they’re asking, ‘Please respect these sacred places.’

People are really quite adamant,” Valentine says. “The people that I’ve mostly interacted with are white, or at least white-appearing, and are still really entitled to their right to be there.”

Valentine says she’s seen people become aggressive when they are asked to leave a sacred site, which is difficult for tribes to deal with.

People sometimes view aspects of Native culture such as white sage or spirit animals as isolated objects, rather than honor the historical context and meaning behind them, she says.

Samantha Andersen, a 23-year-old Pagan witch from Huntley, Illinois, first began to explore spirituality when she saw her sister use tarot cards. Tarot cards are used for divination, originating in 14th century Europe. They were used for parlor games until about the late 16th century, when people began using them to foretell the future.

Now, there are multiple different types of tarot cards. The practice is open, meaning anyone who wishes to can learn how to read tarot. But not all practices are as welcome to all, and more people are borrowing from cultures that are not their own.

“People sometimes will take certain aspects from certain practices and combine them all into one,” Andersen says. “And I think that’s where some of the issues are coming from. People take little practices that they think are really interesting or really popular, and they’ll kind of use it without really knowing where it comes from, or what it actually means.”

Lesley Calvillo, co-founder and president of Call of the Cauldron, a club of witches at Columbia College Chicago, says the club has sessions dedicated to stopping cultural appropriation in witchcraft. She says many of their members are younger and appropriate a culture due to lack of knowledge. “​​It’s a big thing, especially with white sage, or the term black magic, or different things like that,” says Calvillo, who has been practicing witchcraft for three years. “It’s very prevalent, and not a lot of people realize that it’s offensive, or appropriation. Which again, I wish people would do their research more. But also, we need to have more open conversations about it.”

Alex Kropp, a 20-year-old witch from Chicago, says much of modern spirituality is derived and adapted from cultural practices, but it’s important to know when practices can be shared versus when they have been stolen. Kropp says researching is the best way to find out what practices are open and what practices are closed. Cross-referencing with multiple sources is essential.

If people want to learn about native tribes and their work, Valentine says, they should first build relationships with other communities by helping them and learning from them. Going in with an open mind to truly learn and assist can help build those connections, and help people find the healing they crave, she says.

palette — his excitement for food is owed to a childhood spent in a kosher household.

“I grew up very regimented. You know, can’t eat this, can’t eat that, can’t have milk and meat together, no shellfish, no pork,” Dolinsky says. “It took my mom until I was a senior in high school to allow me to bring Domino’s pepperoni pizza into the house — as long as I ate it on paper plates.”

I laugh because it makes perfect sense for a 13-time James Beard Awardwinning food reporter of 25 years to use an analogy that compares himself to food.

After 17 years working at WLS-TV News as the “Hungry Hound,” along came the pandemic — perhaps the perfect push for Dolinsky to start shooting on his own.

Dolinsky sets up the lighting, camera and mic to interview Ellen King, the co-owner of Hewn.

He works fast, and it only takes about 10 minutes total to set up and wrap the interview.

It’s a rainy Wednesday morning in March. I was expecting to shadow Dolinsky and his camera crew while they create the food segment that will be broadcast on WMAQ-TV’s newscast next Thursday. Except Dolinsky shows up at the bakery alone, carrying a backpack and duffel bag of his own equipment, because as it turns out, “The Food Guy” on TV is the product of a one-man show.

We spend the next hour in and around different parts of the expansive bakery kitchen where Dolinsky confidently directs bakers to stop, go or repeat movements, intently following the flow of the bread-making process through his camera lens.

“I always knew that I could do it, but I was never really pushed to do it,” Dolinsky says about producing his own food segments. “Now

Dolinsky would visit his brother’s house, where he was astounded by the Thai and Chinese food his sister-in-law would cook and wondered, “What have I been missing my whole life?” During college, he found himself trying more international foods from Burmese and Middle Eastern cultures.

When his daughter, Madeline, was born, he and his wife, Amy, started taking her for dim sum in Chicago at only six weeks old — she mostly slept in her car seat, but they brought her so that she’d be familiar with the sight, aroma and sound. “[Madeline] grew up in a stroller in Chinese restaurants, so she asked us when she was like 2 if we were Chinese because she was so confused,” Dolinsky says.

When the Dolinskys’ two children, Madeline and Max, were 15 and 12, they took a family trip to China and Hong Kong for “the real dim sum experience,” and by then, Dolinsky notes, they were both pros, ready for their trip to Japan the following year.

While Asian cuisine remains Dolinsky’s favorite, and he always keeps ssamjang and gochujang in the fridge, the past five years of his career have led him down a “neverending bottomless rabbit hole” of tomato sauce, cheese and dough. He recalls reading

a listicle of the seven hottest pizza places in Chicago and thinking it was “total BS,” so he embarked on his own quest for the best.

Dolinsky documented his first phase of pizza research results on his website — a threemonth culmination of 75 pizza places. He then wrote “Pizza City, USA: 101 Reasons Why Chicago Is America’s Greatest Pizza Town,” a book that features 101 pizza joints he recommends.

For his first book, he went to 186 different pizza places, and for his second, “The Ultimate Chicago Pizza Guide,” he visited another 40 — landing him at 226 — and that’s only counting his Chicagoland area taste tests. When all was said and done, Dolinsky took a one-month break from pizza eating.

“There’s a lot of bad pizza out there, believe it or not,” Dolinsky says. “For every three places you go to, one is going to be recommendable.”

So what does it take to earn a Dolinsky pizza recommendation or stamp of approval? “The crust always sets the tone for the pizza. It’s the base of every pie; it’s the base of every review: How good was that crust?” Dolinsky says. “When you have a really memorable pizza, it’s not because the cheese was melted properly. It’s because that crust was either crispy or chewy or crunchy or soft.”

And if you’re asking about his favorite, it’s a thin artisan pizza such as Robert’s Pizza and Dough Company in Streeterville: slightly brown, with an almost burnt bottom and a two- to three-day fermented crust.

“Pizza City, USA” is not just Dolinsky’s book title; it’s also the name of his pizza podcast and pizza tour, where he guides tourists and Chicagoans through four pizza styles at four different restaurants. His newest creation debuts this summer, with Chicago’s first-ever Pizza City Fest on July 23 and 24, featuring 40 different pizza makers (39 from Chicago and one from Nashville). The event will also serve up special guests and experts who will talk about pizza’s history.

Find your lane, be an expert in it and own it, Dolinsky says, and he’s certainly followed his own advice.

A gothic wedding is mixed with themes of darkness, glamor and a flair for dramatic hues, making for a mystical fairytale day. Dark and moody color palettes embrace a new world of fantasy, especially during this wedding season, where lace, pearls and velvet are in. Amp up the romance with long, lacy sleeves, crimson accents, royal ballerina skirts and Victorian-style embellishments. Gianna Gaspar, a seamstress who alters wedding gowns at Chicago’s Ultimate Bride, says brides are opting for added design elements, such as longer sleeves or extended necklines, for added drama. “I have seen straight-up black dresses or a lot of dark, purple hues,” says Gaspar. To create a gothic gown, Gaspar says you can keep the lace and beading of a traditional gown, but you can alter the color.

Black is an obvious choice for groomswear, so pairing a black shirt with deep red or gold accessories adds a romantic flair that will be trending beyond the grave. “I start with something from the place I’m going to. I never would listen to John Denver, but he has a song called ‘Rocky Mountain High,’ and it was a perfect fit,” Smith says. “Then you build out from there with mind mapping. One thing reminds you of the next and before you know it you have 100 songs.”

Admit it: You’re in a funk. You aren’t alone, and this doesn’t mean you have bad taste in music. You just need a refresh.

The first step is the hardest: finding a reason for the playlist. Picking one theme or mood can back you into a corner when it comes to music selection, so to make things easier, set an intention for your playlist instead. This can be anything from setting the mood for a good road trip or exploring an unfamiliar music genre, like EDM or rock.

Streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music offer playlists curated by their staff. While these can be helpful for inspiration, don’t rely on them. Leor Galil, a music journalist at the Chicago Reader, says that sticking to these playlists as your only way of finding new music could get you stuck in the mainstream.

“Services are employing people with certain tastes to create playlists for the public,” Galil says. “If you come to rely on those, your ability to seek out what’s unfamiliar through those platforms gets continually diminished.”

Now you’ve got a solid playlist with great songs— what happens when it starts to feel stale? Musician, songwriter and singer Kendel Lester prefers to keep the foundation of her playlists and adds new songs as time goes on.

“I tend to keep the songs the same and just add to them when I hear something I like,” says Kendel, who’s based in Chicago. “Sometimes I pull songs out, but not very often.”

Congratulations! You’ve brought your playlist back from the dead!

Now that you’ve put the time in to find new genres, artists and albums, you can be on aux with confidence.

If that doesn’t work for you, Hallie Newnam, a senior at Columbia College Chicago and an indie rock musician also known as Eillah, suggests a playlist of songs for the month, with tracks ranging from new releases to rediscovered favorites across all genres. “​​By not constricting myself to a specific mood or genre, I am able to give myself the freedom to seek out music in any genre or decade,” Newnam says. “The only criteria I am bound to is whether I like the song or not.”

Once you have your intention set, it’s time to face the music, literally. The key to picking perfect songs is imagining how you want to feel and what you’ll be doing while you listen.

By Kimberly Kapela When I was 13, I daydreamed about dancing amidst sweaty crowds at a rock show, as I listened religiously to L7’s “Bricks Are Heavy” and The Stooges’ “Raw Power” on vinyl. My fantasy was to bask in the glory of hearing a favorite song played at 50 times the normal volume, as I shouted the lyrics and brushed up against strangers’ sweaty bodies.

Life’s greatest thrill for me may just be the feeling of euphoria that comes from heavy, distorted guitar riffs and singers threatening to burst my eardrums.

As a woman, my goal was to explore what punk meant on my own terms, and that includes finding safe spaces to freely dance without worrying about harassment from creepy men drenched in alcohol.

When I migrated from listening to punk music to entering Chicago’s heavy-punk holy grounds – such as Exit and The Empty Bottle – and abandoned warehouses, I was surprised to find how inclusive the spaces were toward women, people of color and people who are LGBTQ+. As my love for punk music deepened – especially for female-fronted bands – I began to hang around barricades and admire the lead front women who sang about the reclamation of their bodies.

In the beginning of punk and male-dominated subcultures, women often stood in the back and watched the band from afar. Riot Grrrl, a subcultural ’90s third wave feminist movement, broke this mold in the ‘90s by stopping shows to escort girls to the front safely. Feminism took on a new meaning in punk culture, and women now can serve as the lead singers, drummers and instigators of mosh pits at any house show or sold-out festival.

The pit’s energy is infectious, and men aren’t the only people in the circle right in front of the stage. Now, women are kicking and screaming there too. The perception of angry, testosterone-driven white men in the scene contrasts with the reality of a punk show that embraces an array of races and sexualities. This diversity is on stage too with a lead singer who has dyed, liberty-spiked hair and dozens of tattoos adorning their body.

It’s not a fight. Moshing is an intense, collective experience that’s a physical way of matching one’s body and energy to the live music.

The origins of moshing (originally called “mashing” until Bad Brains singer H.R. changed the “a” to an “o”) come from the American heavy rock movement in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s when punk and grunge were exposed to the mainstream.

Amaris Edwards, a member of Chicago’s punk scene and a regular mosher at concerts, sees the pits as a safe space.

“A mosh pit seems intimidating, because when you’re looking on the outside, it seems like a lot of people bumping into each other and being loud. But I feel like it’s an outlet for me to let out certain emotions,” Edwards says. “Moshers make sure people don’t get hurt — the intention is not to hurt people but to just have a good time.”

The anti-authoritarian energy of mosh pits provides a space for emotional release and physical healing, as bands sing about religion, anarchy and politics. For Edwards, there’s a freedom of expression in moshing.

The energy is empowering, reckless and therapeutic, and mosh pits are completely voluntary. Of course, concert-goers can’t just jump into a pit intending to create violence and hurt other moshers. There are basic rules of etiquette and codes of conduct for moshers to abide by, to protect themselves and everyone involved.

As moshers slam, elbow and kick into each other, some with faces bloodied and piercings ripped off, the number one rule is that if someone gets knocked to the floor, other moshers immediately help them up. And if a mosher gets injured, they’re pulled out of the pit and looked after. The goal of a mosh pit is to push one another, but never to intentionally hurt someone or get into a fight.

Punk mosher Taylor Brown has been a fan of local Toronto punk artists for five years and feels comfortable in the midst of chaos because of these rules.

“I enjoy [moshing] despite the fact that [even though] it’s very chaotic, it’s an environment of care,” Brown says. “If someone drops their phone, everyone stops and finds it. For the most part people don’t mosh maliciously. ” In the pit, moshers can form friendships and bond through music and the exchange of energy.

“It’s all about coming together, screaming the lyrics that everyone loves,” Brown says. “It’s more of a connection about finding these weirdos who also like this music that you happen to like.”

I’ve had my fair share of hair pulling, bruises and aggressive slamming, but punk music and cheap local shows have given me a space to flourish, by not only expanding my fashion taste, but also building my confidence. Releasing anger isn’t just for men, and safe spaces like pits are a great way to provide a release of rage and display of angst. der M

Dancing with other women with sweaty faces, smudged makeup and chain-link leather platforms creates a healing space for me. It’s a dream come true for my angsty, teenage self. It could be the same for you.

KEEPING EXOTIC ANIMALS AS PETS

By Amina Sergazina Illustrations by Hannah Tonn When you hear the term “exotic pet,” you probably think of people who open up their home to monkeys, tigers and lions. However, you might be surprised to learn that pets found at your local pet store can also be considered exotic.

According to the Ecological Society of America, 50% of pets owned in the U.S. are considered exotic. Exotic animals require special care and are not for everyone, but many still pursue owning exotic animals like reptiles, which require paying special attention to their diet. Threequarters of reptiles bought from a pet store die within the first year, according to World Animal Protection.

Many of the care instructions for exotic pets are not intuitive and require additional research. According to a guide from the Veterinary Centers of America Animal Hospital, snakes – which are cold blooded – need the choice of having two climates, meaning one side of the tank must be warmer than the other.

Jenna Perlick has been a hedgehog breeder for more than four years and owns a breeding company with her husband, Mathew Perlick, called Prickle Pack Hedgehogs, in Batavia, Illinois. Jenna saw a picture on a dating website of Mathew holding a hedgehog, and soon they were married and starting a business together.

The Perlicks have over 135 adult African hedgehogs in their garage.

Some reptile owners love their pets so much they share them with the world. For instance, Nicole Lubecke, a Sedona, Arizona resident will stroll through a local shopping district with what looks like a white, scaly something around her neck. From a distance, it could be mistaken for an accessory. It’s not. It’s one of her many reptile pets.

Lubecke owns six snakes, one lizard and two dogs. She says the reptiles help ease the heartache of losing her brother in 2020; he loved reptiles and owned snakes, tarantulas and exotic fish, she says.

“After losing him, the snakes and reptiles remind me of him,” Lubecke says. “That’s where I find my comfort, especially my red-tailed boa, since he had one like her.”

Lubecke keeps the reptiles stored in a tank in a separate room of the house. Unlike her dogs or cats that need constant attention, Lubecke says her reptiles are more low maintenance, and she can leave them without being fed for six months at a time, as long as she leaves them with water.

According to the VCA Animal Hospital guide for feeding snakes, an owner should feed their snake depending on their size, age and activity level. The VCA also says a veterinarian can give a more precise feeding schedule based on each snake.

Exotic animals are not just unusual pets to own; for some people, they’re a source of income. The annual trading of exotic vertebrates equates

“Hedgehogs are appropriate pets for some people,” Perlick said. “They are cute and cuddly on Instagram, but a lot of what you’re seeing is misinterpreted.” She adds that hedgehogs are also famous for pooping, a lot.

Hedgehogs can carry salmonella Typhimurium, but be asymptomatic and spread it to humans. According to Garden Wildlife Health, there have been rare instances of pets and livestock being infected by hedgehogs.

In 2021, an outbreak of salmonella Typhimurium made 49 people in 25 states sick, and 83% of those infected reported having been in contact with a hedgehog beforehand, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Prickle Pack Hedgehogs aims to educate potential buyers about a hedgehog’s needs, and will take animals back if a buyer should change their mind.

It is important to research and learn proper care for an exotic animal before owning one. Hannah Good, veterinarian and owner of Community Mobile Vet in Santa Cruz, California, said that over her 30 years of practice she’s seen many examples of how an owner’s ignorance led to the neglect of an exotic pet.

For instance, Good has treated many parrots with fractured bones. The problem, she says, is that some owners feed their birds only birdseed, which doesn’t meet their need for calcium. Parrots need calcium to produce oil, which spreads through their feathers. If they do not get it naturally, their body starts draining calcium from the bones.

“Most people are horrified to find out that they were doing something wrong [to their exotic pet]. Over the years I’ve gotten much more gentle in my judgment and my approach to [owners],” Good says. “It’s usually just about ignorance.”

Blogger Valerie Villalobos moved from Kansas City to Chicago with hopes that a new city would inspire her. However, due to mental health problems, she had to backtrack. Now, every Sunday, she does a “reset,” where she gets coffee with her father, and they discuss the highs and lows of their week and how to do better in the future. Coming to terms with her emotions and connecting with someone who truly listens helped her become more vulnerable and aware. “I try to surround myself with people that provide a very comfortable and peaceful space to hang out, and surround myself with good energy,” Villalobos says.

In high school, Joseph Horowitz used social media anonymously to connect with other plus-size people and share outfits — until someone leaked his account. He took a hiatus, but later returned to the community because of how helpful he says that connecting with others was for him. Now an anthropology student at University of Illinois at Chicago, Horowitz says he practices self-care and mindfulness just by pausing to admire life around him. “Something about seeing how people just exist in the world ambiently brings me great peace, as sometimes I feel like my head is constantly buzzing,” Horowitz says.

Kate Ramsden, a body positivity fashion influencer, battled depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia and ADHD. During her freshman year of college, she felt like an outcast from her roommates because of her habits — specifically eating — and would frequently compare herself to them. Now, she says running a checklist for both her physical and emotional needs helps her refocus. When a bad day does hit, she rechannels that energy into more mundane things: washing dishes, tending plants, doing crafts, even just taking a shower.

For Olivia Sun, self-confidence comes from putting things in perspective. Sun, a Torontobased YouTuber and research assistant, said that knowing her worth and ability to change her reality has helped her endure hardships she would have struggled with in the past. “I just reminded myself that I’m young and have a whole unforeseen future ahead of me,” Sun says. “Hardships that I face now will hurt far less years later.”

Becoming the best version of yourself is a journey. Using self-care and self discovery can put you on the right path to finding your fullest potential.

A Love of Learning: How to Emulate the Dark Academia Aesthetic It’s not just argyle sweaters, oversized blazers and Harry Potter glasses

By Rachel Patel Sipping a cup of Earl Grey tea on a rainy day. Reading John Keats by candlelight. Wearing a Draco Malfoy-esque outfit to the grocery store.

This moody aesthetic, known as dark academia, can create a portal back in time to the British romanticism era.

“As I aged, my overt fanboy-ish love for the series melded into my style, and I loved the dark colors of [the books’ characters’ clothes],” he says.

“The general, magical whimsicality of the universe has always been something I’ve tried to think about in my day-to-day life.”

The dark academia subculture, which flourishes on Instagram and TikTok, emphasizes an appreciation for education, self-discovery and the quirkier details of life.

Sydney Decker curates mood boards inspired by dark academia for her Instagram followers. Decker, whose account is @myfairesttreasure, says that vintage clothing pieces are at the forefront of the aesthetic — in short, anything with the feel of a 1950s boarding school.

Its aesthetic goes beyond argyle sweater vests and oversized blazers.

Holly Errington, owner of the dark-academia Instagram account @stardustville, says there are modern-day locations enthusiasts can visit, also. To get that edgy, private-school student vibe, she suggests visiting art galleries and museums — even graveyards, if you’re feeling extra.

“Literature is mostly emphasized within the aesthetic, and I enjoy reading classic literature and other literature that’s involved with dark academia,” she says. She particularly recommends the mystery “The Lake of Dead Languages” by Carol Goodman, which is about a student who leaves boarding school after a roommate dies, only to return as a teacher and see the past repeat itself.

Carol Menegatti uses photos to document her life on her dark academia inspired Instagram account, @thesecretacademia. Using a dark color palette, she captures details ranging from the texture of her loafers to the brush strokes in a painting to the fluidity of her cursive penmanship.

“I would also recommend journaling, especially with a fountain pen,” Goodman says. “Writing with one initially was certainly difficult, but became enjoyable once I got the hang of it.”

“I consider art and literature to be the central pillars of dark academia,” she says.

A major Harry Potter fanboy, Michael Levandoski says that as a kid he wore similar glasses to Harry’s and dressed as him for Halloween.

As niche as the dark academia aesthetic may sound, its appeal stems largely from its accessibility — all you really need is to have an appreciation for the arts, learning and its process. If all of these pointers sound like interests right up your alley, perhaps now is the time for you to dive into the exciting world of the dark academia aesthetic; it’s just one hashtag away.

Behind the Scenes at the Mortuary Morticians and embalmers strive to create closure through preserving a loved one’s image

Dealing with a loved one’s death can be a difficult experience, but mortuary cosmetologists preserve the final image of the body to give closure during the healing process.

With their mastery of human anatomy and death care, mortuary cosmetologists create the final image of the deceased by replicating their likeness and capturing their essence. Mortuary cosmetology, formerly known as “desairology,” restores a dead person’s skin tone, makeup and nails to mimic a natural version of how they looked during life.

During death care, restorative artists use their passion for sculpting and makeup artistry to ease families’ anxiety about an open-casket funeral service.

Fawn Monique, a global cosmetologist and expert skin therapist who assists funeral homes with mortuary makeup, has been a makeup artist for almost 23 years.

“It’s [mortuary cosmetology] very much a ritual, and I think that there’s a beautiful side of it. I wish more people did it, especially in the makeup world.”

Monique owns two makeup studios in Pennsylvania that offer energy therapy such as reiki, as well as makeup education, bridal makeup and cosmetology services. She receives several phone calls from funeral homes because of her cosmetology expertise, usually

for hard cases where there’s been trauma and severe discoloration.

“My goal [for bodies] is to look like they’re sleeping,” says Monique. “I have pictures of them prior to death and get their coloration.”

Even though embalming companies create makeup for post-mortem use, makeup artists can choose to purchase their own makeup. Monique keeps cruelty-free, organic cosmetics in her makeup bag, such as RMS Beauty and Giella Custom Blend Cosmetics.

The biggest challenge Monique faces on the job is working with chemical changes the body goes through postmortem. Skin becomes discolored, skin and hair breakdown occurs and the body exhibits bloating. She uses cosmetics to balance the deceased’s skin tone, so the body doesn’t look painted.

“The skin is different from live skin because it doesn’t absorb products as you would when the skin’s functioning with blood flow,” Monique says.

Typically, Monique applies makeup based on a photo provided by the deceased’s loved ones.

Sometimes she’s requested to apply makeup directly from the deceased’s makeup bag.

“My whole thing is it’s an honor to be a part of somebody’s last makeup ritual,” she says. “I do makeup for people during the most important times of their life, so being part of that last makeup ritual is really an honor to me.”

Amber Carvaly, licensed funeral director, mortician and founder of funeral home Undertaking LA, says the deceaseds’ bodies are treated with respect throughout their time at the funeral home. “I’m just wildly passionate about ensuring that people know that trusting your loved one is an option,” Carvaly says in terms of exploring funeral and burial options.

When preparing a body, embalmers have to be careful to not make drastic changes to the appearance that could upset the family. Loved ones have the option to dress and do the body’s makeup themselves.

Carvaly has personal experience with this situation, with her nowdeceased friend Maria, who always wore a specific shade of red lipstick

by MAC Cosmetics. The embalmer picked a different shade of red with the wrong undertones, so Carvaly went to the funeral home, wiped off the original red and put on Maria’s signature red lip.

“I can tell you that’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced in my entire life,” Carvaly says. “I feel like if there’s an afterlife and I ever got to see Maria again, she would thank me for ensuring her lipstick was on her.”

Carvaly says embalmers have a more interesting job, and it takes attention to detail to apply someone’s makeup for the last time. “The body comes in and you fill out an assessment that looks like a coroner’s report and examine their blood spots, broken bones or their contusions and what’s going on with their body,” Carvaly says.

When it comes to the typical day-to-day tasks of a funeral director or embalmer, Carvaly says, it’s important to ensure every step in the process is documented, from applying makeup to writing a death certificate.

“We live in a very red tape society, and emotions have no red tape.

They’re just like yellow caution tape all over the place. And I know how the red tape and the bureaucracy works, but people don’t know that when their mom dies,” says Carvaly. “They don’t know what’s happening, and their life is falling apart, and they have three days to figure it out and have to go back to work and be a normal person.”

Though death can be a heartbreaking process for those involved, cosmetologists work to preserve life and love through the celebration of the deceased’s final ritual.

‘Our hearts beat to the rhythm of worry’ A letter to a beloved grandmother in Ukraine Illustrated by Colleen Hogan When Yelizaveta Yuvkhimenko was 14, she, her mother and two brothers moved from Kyiv, Ukraine, to Chicago. Their father had already been living in the U.S., and they came on a family reunification visa.

They had been living in the U.S. for five years when Russian forces invaded their home country in February. She and her family have tried to live a normal life, despite feeling mentally drained and deeply worried for their family and friends back in Ukraine.

Yuvkhimenko, a sophomore cinema and TV arts major at Columbia College Chicago, says although she and her family are safe in Chicago, it feels as if they too are at war. A loud car horn or ambulance siren can trigger a terrifying image of what the front lines of the Russian invasion might be like.

Yuvkhimenko dedicated this letter to her grandmother, who was living alone in Kyiv at the time she wrote it.

The letter was translated and edited by Amina Sergazina.

My dear Grandmother!

How are you there now? I just can’t even imagine. On the first day of Russia’s attack on Ukraine, I was restless. I was very nervous when you weren’t answering [the phone.] The whole family sat down and prayed for you.

Our hearts beat to the rhythm of the worry, and our hands were clenched from the pain.

From that moment, our appetite left us, and we didn’t sleep all night.

But [when you answered], after four hours of us carefully dialing the phone, [you spoke to us] with a calm voice, and calmed us down.

It wasn’t for long, but we were very glad that you were well and safe.

From that moment, I lost count of the days.

Even though I saw the sun or the moon in the sky, I didn’t understand whether it was morning or night. The calls we made to you every two hours were very frightening and emotional. When you didn’t pick up the phone, my brain made up the most terrible stories on its own. And when you did answer, it hurt that we were not next to you and I could do little to help. And in the end, the most terrible thing was the thought that this could be our last call.

I remember the days when we were together, how joyfully we spent our time. You were the one who taught me the alphabet and [how to read] books, to cook light meals and to appreciate what is important in this life: people, the beauty of nature and every moment. I am very grateful to God that you

are my grandmother and for being with me from birth until I moved to live in America.

Only now, when the war began, I realized how little I said “thank you” and “I love you very much.” I pray for your health and safety. May the Lord bless and protect you so that no bullet, bomb, mine or rocket touches you.

That’s why I’m not saying goodbye to you in this letter.

See you soon, I love you.

Photographers’ Bios K’Von Jackson K’Von Jackson is a junior photography major at Columbia College Chicago and director of photography at the Columbia Chronicle.

He is a documentary photographer and photojournalist born and raised in Chicago.

His work focuses on Black history and how it’s shaped Chicago’s social, cultural and political spectrum. K’Von utilizes both digital and analog photography to visually capture and tell stories across Chicago.

Elizabeth Rymut Elizabeth Rymut is a junior photojournalism major at Columbia College Chicago who does freelance photography specializing in portrait, landscape and editorial.

Bianca Kreusel Bianca Kreusel is a junior and photo journalism major at Columbia College Chicago. She is the deputy director of photography at the Columbia Chronicle. When she isn’t photojournalistic work she does analog or traditional photography and processing and printing negatives in the darkroom.

Mikaela Helane Mikaela Helane is a senior photography major at Columbia College Chicago who previously worked as a photographer for Frank Magazine. She is a freelance photographer with her own business, Mikaela Helane Photography, and works largely in fashion and beauty photography.

With a documentary and fashion photography background, she brought those skills with her to help keep Echo’s visual story cohesive throughout.

THERE WERE A LOT OF DECISIONS TO MAKE POST-GRADUATION, BUT I THANK COLUMBIA FOR LEADING ME TO THE RIGHT DOORS FOR MY CAREER TO TAKE OFF. IT WAS UP TO ME TO HAVE THE COURAGE TO OPEN THEM. People ask me where I studied, and I proudly say ‘Columbia College Chicago.’ The journalism classes I took were amazing and helped me create my writing portfolio and broadcast reel. My time at The Columbia Chronicle allowed me to write about topics I would have never thought I’d get the opportunity to report.
