Shadow Chancellor praises the region during Norton visit

BY MATT LINES The Norton, Coleshill, paid host to a lunch with the Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls on 8th January, which was designed as an opportunity for local business people to voice their opinions and concerns. The focus was largely on the expansion of local small businesses and the job creation that goes handin-hand with this.

Dozens of local business people were in attendance with all concerns and views listened to discussed by Mr Balls. The most heated discussion naturally came with the topic of HS2, with several attendees making complaints about the rail link. Mr Balls was keen to reiterate that there would be “no blank cheque” from Labour for the scheme, and that HS2 LTD it would have to ensure that it was value for money.

Despite some concerns over the local economy, Mr Balls did praise the region for its economic contribution

stating that “if it wasn’t for the West Midlands the UK export performance would be very very poor”.

He added that "There are still big challenges here and there's lots of small businesses who are under great pressure because bank lending is still falling and it's harder to access the skills and get the apprenticeships".

He stated that a Labour government would seek to set up a Business Investment Bank which would help to provide finance on affordable terms.

This scheme would be in partnership with, and for the most part led by, the private sector.

Further topics discussed ranged from fuel costs and transport investments, to government investment in apprenticeships and employment for young people.

Before he left Ed Balls, who is the MP for Morley and Outwood in West Yorkshire, was keen to praise the staff of the Norton for putting on such a good spread, and in particular commenting that the chips were excellent.

New fund to repair vulnerable listed church buildings In the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Autumn Statement, he announced that there will be a special £15 million fund for the repair of roofs and guttering on vulnerable listed church buildings.

Many church buildings are in need of repair, a recent report by English Heritage showed that 887 places of worship are at risk of rapid deterioration. This new fund will offer a real solution for many of these church buildings. It is open to any listed church building where roof and gutter repairs have been identified as urgent and necessary.

Eligible parishes can make applications for grants between £10,000 and £100,000. Awards have to be allocated by 31 March and the deadline for submissions is 30 January 2015. The National Heritage Memorial Fund is administering the scheme and details about the roof fund will also be available via the ChurchCare website, www. churchcare.co.uk.

Dan Byles the MP for North Warwickshire and Bedworth commented on the new fund, saying: ‘There is a place of worship in almost every village, ward or neighbourhood and 85% of the population are reported to visit at least once a year.

Historic church buildings not only provide a place of worship, but are often one of the most used hubs of community activity.’

‘Churches are often the most distinctive building in an area and provide both a symbol of local identity and a powerful connection to our past.’

‘I hope that this fund will allow churches that might come under threat of closure in North Warwickshire and Bedworth to stay open, and I urge every parish in my constituency to look at whether they may be able to apply for this money.’

Apprentice intake set to increase at BMW engine plant Applicants encouraged to join the team as plant prepares for next generation engines.

IT’S an exciting time to join the BMW engine manufacturing plant at Hams Hall, near Birmingham.

With a several-hundred million-pound development programme nearing completion, investment in an increased number of apprentices is a key part of the plant’s strategy to prepare for production of next generation engines. Already, the plant has ramped up assembly of new three-cylinder power units for the BMW i8 hybrid plug-in sports car alongside continued current production.

Jon Homer, from Tamworth and a manufacturing craft apprentice at the Hams Hall plant said: "I have an interest in engineering so an apprenticeship at BMW is perfect for me! I’m really enjoying my training programme which involves work- based placements as well as studying at college. Joining a large global company offers many opportunities and I feel really positive about my future career.”

There will be twelve manufacturing apprenticeship opportunities at the Hams Hall plant which will commence in August 2015.

Curdworth WI January 2015 OUR Christmas celebrations began with the annual party where the vast amount and variety of food was a veritable feast.

We were entertained by Spectrum, a group of men and women who perform on a charitable basis to raise funds for an assortment of organisations, who sang both a number of well known pop tunes and Christmas carols which set us in the mood for Christmas. The group Carol service was held this year in Wishaw Parish church and was followed by mince pies and mulled wine.

The monthly CWIRLS walk this month started at The Beehive in Curdworth with a long and short walk around the village followed by lunch at The Beehive.

To start the New Year the ladies held their January meeting at Walmley Golf Club where they enjoyed a very

pleasant evening complete with a 3-course dinner and background music provided

by Annabele on the piano-keyboard.

Our annual skittles evening is fast approaching and will take place on Friday 20th February in Curdworth village hall starting promptly at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £9 each for adults and £4 for children and will include a jacket potato supper. As is the norm please bring your own drinks.

The next meeting of the W.I. will take place on Thursday 5th February at 7.45pm in the village hall and the guest speaker will be Kevin Barfield talking about The Birth of Rock and Roll. New members and visitors are always welcome to attend these meetings.

I’ve experienced a lot but how can I be of help to you? How about some simple advice on how to reduce your annual motoring costs. I still get surprised about the small amount of attention some drivers pay to looking after their car or how many times I’ve heard “I am just not interested in cars”. That’s fine but unfortunately if you don’t engage in the practicalities then it will finish up costing you more money. For example, we had at least 10 cars towed into us last year with damaged engines that maeant the customer had to scrap their car and I know all of them could have been avoided with a little preventative maintenance. None of it is complicated I promise you Here are my top tips on the must do’s to keep your costs down:

Whatever happened to the Neighbourhood Plan?

Oil Level

Ignore it at your peril. If you are not sure how to check it you can always “phone a friend” Or dare I say it go to a garage – most will check your levels free of charge (we do).

Anti Freeze

If it hasn’t been checked and your engine coolant freezes you will be pretty cheesed off as it could well cause expensive damage.

Today’s antifreeze doesn’t need changing as often as it used to but it still needs checking.

Annual service

If your tight for cash then at the very minimum you must have an annual oil & filter change, if you don’t your “chariot” will not get you to work. Without that annual oil change the oil system will sludge up and in most cases your engine will be damaged.

You must also have the wheels off once a year to check to see how worn the brakes are. It you don’t you will eventually hear a metal to metal grinding noise which, guess what, cost more money! It’s no good expecting a warning light to come on telling you that they need changing as a lot of cars don’t have that system built in.

Do a pre-MOT check to beat common fails

40% of cars fail their MOT test first time, and far too many for a simple, avoidable reason. Often fixing problems is a question of common sense, not mechanical know-how. How long will it take you to check all the simple items like lights, washers & wipers.

One in five cars fail an MOT due to a light bulb not working. Have someone sit in the car while you walk around checking every light: front, rear, headlights and dipped, hazards and indicators. If you need one, buy a new bulb and replace it.

Savings on Fuel

Just think about some of the following, all added together it can save you a lot. Keep your tyres inflated (efficiency improvement: Up to 3%) Declutter your car (efficiency improvement: Up to 2%) The lighter your car is, the less effort it needs to accelerate. Take your roof rack off (efficiency improvement: Up to 2%) A roof rack adds massive wind resistance, increasing drag and making the engine work harder. Don't need it? Remove it.

Turn off air conditioning at lower speeds (efficiency improvement: Up to 8%) Air con uses an incredible amount of fuel, so turn it off unless really needed I hope that’s been of some use, get involved and you can save yourself a lot of money. BACK in 2013 residents of Coleshill were asked to complete the Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire that was posted through every door in Coleshill (and available online).

But whatever happened to all of that information? Residents can be forgiven for saying that nothing has been done with it and because the steering group has been rather quiet of late who can blame them?

But you know what they say it’s always the quiet ones…

Since the end of 2013 the steering group have been busy collating all of the infor-

mation gathered, not only from the questionnaire but also the public meetings and resident visits carried out by Steering group members. We have met with North Warwickshire Borough Council, other local Neighbourhood Plan Groups and the Department of Communities and Local Government as well as employing our very own Town Planner!

Now that North Warwickshire’s Borough Councils Core Strategy has been passed we are able to, with our Neighbourhood Plan, tweak some of the finer details so it best represents the wants and

needs of Coleshill residents. CRAIG Tracey, who is looking to become the next Conservative MP in North Warwickshire & Bedworth, visited the McDonalds Restaurant at Bassetts Poles last week to see how the business is bringing apprentice and job opportunities to local people.

Craig met with Franchisee Douglas Wright, who went from working at a McDonalds after leaving school to now owning 10 restaurants 30 years later.

Craig Tracey commented: “McDonalds clearly look after their employees well – Douglas is a great example of someone who went through the system and has been very successful. They are offering Apprenticeships to local people, helping them gain formal qualifications, giving key skills and experience to have successful careers. The Governments

focus on an apprenticeship drive has seen 2 million apprenticeships created nationally; this is hugely important in giving young people and school leavers the chance to get on in life.”

Franchisee Douglas Wright, said: “We were pleased to show Craig what our restaurant brings to the local community: 85 jobs 5 apprentices and £2m to the local economy.

The Government’s Apprenticeship scheme has helped us by giving people a formalised career path with an NVQ qualification at the end of it.”

Local Candidate Craig, who’s pledged to create and support thousands of more local apprenticeships if elected in May concluded: “This was a really interesting visit, and shows how important apprenticeships can be for giving opportunities and skills to the next generation.”

COLESHILL’S Youngest Councillor discusses the towns Memorial Park and why he is over joyed with the announcement that it will get a major investment over the next year.

COLESHILL Drama Group are holding a New Members Night on Thursday 19th February at 8.00pm at Coleshill Town Hall (side entrance).

The group would like to offer a 'no commitment' opportunity to come along, meet existing group members, have a look at slides of some of our past performances and to see how a production is mounted. We are looking for new members who are interested in all aspects of theatre, which includes performers, directors, producers, costume and wardrobe mistresses (and masters!), technical crew, backstage crew and front of house staff. Previous experience is not necessary and we can offer training and workshops.

You can be assured of a warm welcome and refreshments will be provided.

Mary Ann Evans Hospice Support Group is Back After a quiet couple of months, the support group will spring back into life on Sat March 7th with a Table Top Sale at Coleshill.

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been a Councillor for nearly four years and I’m only 22! In a few weeks time I’ll take part in what could be my last Full Council meeting because in a couple of months time I will be asking for your support at the ballot box and I don’t know if you will support me.

I got involved in politics at a very young age. In my youthful enthusiasm, I struggled to understand the apathy that some people have with politicians and politics in general. The past four years have opened my eyes to why people are put off local politics but at times I have also seen why politics is so important to us in Coleshill.

Local people tell me that nothing much ever changes and that the issues in Coleshill have remained unresolved for years. I agree that many issues remain unresolved in our town but that is not because of politics, it’s because of some politicians.

In the middle of our town we have a seven-acre park that has had minimal investment for the past decade.

I walk through the park and think what a disgrace it is that for too many years we have paid the highest council tax in North Warwickshire yet have a park that often looks dilapidated.

The park is not just a place for young children to spend half an hour, it could be a place where sports stars of the future are born, where the community comes together to watch or play cricket, football or tennis, where friendships are made, where families enjoy picnics, where people spend the day in Coleshill and where people come to visit.

If we create an environment where people want to spend time we will keep people in our town providing extra footfall for our local High Street traders.

If sports facilities are better quality then more people will use them then we will have a fitter society and potentially we ease the pressure on our health service in the future.

If we create somewhere people want to spend time we can help bring our community together.

The Town Council, supported by the Borough Council have just voted to invest £180,000 into the park.

Lets be clear; this is not about spending money on play equipment, the plan is much wider than that. There hasn’t been much investment in the park over the past two decades. This isn’t a plan to turn it into the next Drayton Manor; it’s actually a very simple plan to bring our park into the 21st century.

By that I mean paths without weeds, lawns without dirt patches, bins without graffiti and fences without broken panels. We need to get the basics right and then build on that by creating new sporting and recreational facilities for the whole town to enjoy. The Town Council will be discussing the plans on a meeting on Wednesday 4th February at 7pm at the Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public so I’d encourage you to come along.

The Town Council is investing in our park and other parts of the town and at the same time has frozen your council tax yet again, for a 6th year in a row! In fact because of the way council tax is calculated a band D property will pay less Council tax in 2015 than they did in 2010.

MANY local pensioners, including 640 in the constituency of North Warwickshire and Bedworth, who have saved will only get an 87p pension rise this year because the government has also announced a freeze in pension credits.

240 couples will only get 60p according to newly revealed figures obtained by Labour from the Department of Work and Pensions.

On 4th December the government announced that the state pension would rise by £2.85 next April, but combined it with a freezing of the pensions credit claimed by those pensioners who have an income from savings or a small pension.

Mike O’Brien has called on Ministers come clean with pensioners after new figures showed 51,420 pensioners who claim pension credit in the West Midlands Region will only get a rise in the state pension of 87p.

Mike, who was the Minister for Pensions in 2007-8, said, “This government gave to pensioners with one hand and took it away with the other. That’s a cheap way to behave at Christmas. Ministers need to be up front with pensioners about the value of their pensions.

“The changes mean that although pensioners without savings will get £2.85, those with savings will lose out.

As a result 640 pensioners over 65 who have an income between £120.35 and £190.35 will only get an extra 87p and 240 couples who earn £192 and £278.25 between them will get as low as just 60p a week more from next April. This will hit some of the poorest pensioners and is particularly bad because it penalises those who have worked hard and saved and done the right thing.

“Those pensioners who have saved are penalised. Was this a bungle by Cameron? Or is it a sleight of hand? Either way Cameron needs to sort this out.”

Winners of North Warwickshire at work photo competition announced

1st prize – Stallholders on Atherstone Market by Charlie James Tennant

TWO stunning snaps depicting a cobbler at work and stallholders on Atherstone Market have scooped the two first prizes of £150 in the North Warwickshire at Work photo competition.

Mike Hathway of Atherstone took the winning image at Snobs on Long Street to win the 17 and over prize of £150 whilst Charlie James Tennant of Baxterley snapped the fruit and veg stallholders on a sunny day to win the 16 and under category.

Highly commended were Heather Ross’s image of her husband at work on their farm in Nether Whitacre and Angus Goody’s daytime shot of The Rose pub at Baxterley.

The photo competition was launched in September, with sponsorship from BMW Hams Hall to encourage people to send in their images of the world of work in North Warwickshire. By the closing date of 30th November, the Borough Council had received 45 entries.

The judging panel included Councillor Ray Sweet, who also presided over the prizegiving ceremony on 16th December and Kate Bird from BMW. Councillor Sweet said: “ We are proud of our history and heritage in North

We have written to planning again to stress the concerns of the council regarding increased traffic from the proposed development. We anticipate that significant delays will be inevitable on the crossroads at Coleshill and Furnace End resulting in traffic using Station Road and Hoggrills End Lane or Middle Lane as a ‘rat run’.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING Neil Gilliver from Warwickshire Rural Housing Association along with 2 colleagues attended the meeting to report that the housing needs survey carried out in the village earlier in the year identified a need for a total of 11 homes, 5 open market and 6 affordable. Once an appropriate site has been found and initial surveys and designs have been carried out a public consultation will be arranged.

FLOOD FORUM Funding of £32.5k has been awarded to the flood forum group by the National Flood Forum. This will be used to purchase and maintain a pump on the flood defences at Coton Road. A community camera has been fitted on the flood defences to show the height of the water in the ditch by Coton Road, this will help to indicate when the pump will need to be deployed. An action plan has been prepared to clear local land drains, culverts and drains from Station Road which should run into the fields that are adjacent to Coton Road. Channels are blocked and it appears that Severn Trent are

responsible, they have been invited to discuss the problems at a multi agency meeting with the flood forum group. Once these are all free flowing it is hoped that the village will benefit from reduced flooding, the water will run down to Coton Road where it will be pumped over the defences when necessary.

Nether Whitacre Parish Council: News From December Meeting

SPEED AWARENESS Our local police have agreed to carry out speed and HGV checks in the village following a joint request from Nether Whitacre and Lea Marston Parish Councils. The large LTS lorries have now vacated the Cedars and all remaining operators are able to turn right and go under the bridge when leaving the premises. Problems appear to be with vehicles cutting through to Hams Hall and Station Road, Whitacre being mixed up with Station Road, Coleshill. The police will report their findings at the next Area Forum meeting in February. Any unlawful movements can be reported to the clerk who will forward them to the relevant authorities.

The Parish Council and North Warwickshire Borough Council have applied to ‘Awards for All’ for a grant of £10k to enhance the toddler facilities in the playing field, Birmingham Road. A specification is being put together for a slide, bucket swings and climbing equipment. We will need to do a community consultation in the new year to demonstrate support for the facilities. Residents will be invited to use equipment and give their comments. We will publish the event with flyers and notices – please drop in and support the initiative.

Business46 raises cash for local school

I am mad about the NHS – and maybe you should be too UNDER the 2012 Act local councils have been a role in the NHS, however, I recently come out of the George Eliot Hospital and, I am still undergoing treatment, I have a personal view too.

Let me defend the staff. It is not their fault that the Eliot is failing to meet its accident and emergency targets. It should be seeing 95% of patients within four hours but it is seeing 81% in that period. Staff are rushed off their feet. There are not enough of them. When I was admitted to A&E, I witnessed how stressed the staff are. I have nothing but praise for what our local NHS staff do; which is why I am mad about the crisis in the NHS today and why I think you should be mad too.

The government says our hospital has a £12 million deficit. Of course, ministers won’t admit that it has underfunded the hospital by £12m; instead they blame the hospital for the deficit.

It’s as if they are saying managers have spent extravagantly. Ministers want the deficit lowered. But how can the hospital cut costs when its main overhead is staff and it is understaffed? Last year the hospital spent three months in “special measures” because it had previously cut staff to reduce its deficit. Whilst on special measures it increased the number of staff. Now Ministers want the deficit cut again. Doesn’t that make you mad?

Meantime local GPs are struggling to cope with the increasing pressure on them and patients are turning to the hospital A&E unit. All this was very predictable. The elderly didn’t pop-up in a puff of smoke from nowhere. We have known for decades that the number of elderly is increasing and that demands on the NHS will inevitably increase. There is no point David Cameron saying he was caught by surprise. Is he seriously saying he didn’t expect people to grow old, so he didn’t need enough staff in the hospitals? That’s just nuts. He knew about the increasing demand, but since 2010 has cut or held static the money for the NHS. Since 2010 the deficit at the Eliot has ballooned. One minute Mr Cameron wants savings and the next he demands the hospital hits service targets – as if one doesn’t have an impact on the other.

Doesn’t that make you mad?

Meantime MPs voted for the bungled Health and Social Care Act 2012 - including our local MPs – and they have forced the NHS to carry out a massive and unnecessary top down reorganisation. It wasted £1.3 billion. Thousands of NHS managers were made redundant from one part of the NHS and then rehired in another part. Doesn’t that make you mad?

Then in 2012 they decided to sort out the NHS by letting profit run it. A Cam-

bridgeshire hospital called Hinchingbrooke was given to a private company because Ministers thought they could run things better if they ran it for private profit. Ministers had an ideological obsession that a selfish motive would enable managers to do things better. Last week the company was slammed by the Care Quality Commission for lacking leadership and providing poor quality care and it has now handed the contract for Hinchingbrooke back to the NHS. But the extraordinary thing is that two years ago ministers tried to get exactly the same company to take over George Eliot Hospital. Our hospital wasted eighteen months and large amounts of NHS money in a failed exercise to encourage private companies to bid to buy it; which distracted managers from patient care.

Doesn’t that make you mad? Anyway, thankfully the privatisation exercise collapsed in March last year.

The BBC says the last three months of 2014 saw the worst waits in the NHS for a decade. The number of waits above four hours for a bed to be found after a decision to admit a patient to hospital - known as a trolley wait - has risen by 224% to more than 47,000. Nearly 38,000 ambulances faced delays of 30 minutes or more in handing patients to A&E staff - more than double the figure the year before. Delayed discharges have risen by nearly a third, with more than 62,000 “bed days” lost owing to a lack of community support for frail and elderly patients. And there has been a 62% rise in cancelled operations.

“The pressure has built across the system and is now spreading,” said Dr Cliff Mann, President of the College of Emergency Medicine. “We are seeing more patients come in and are struggling to get them through.”

Then last week we had the latest local NHS madness. The governments newly created GP led Clinical Commissioning Group or CCG wants to take the GP Walk-In Centre in Camp Hill in Nuneaton away from the George Eliot Hospital and give it to a private company.

The GPs have never liked Walk-In Centres because they took patients away from their businesses and because WalkIn Centres open for longer and put pressure on GPs to stay open longer.

Now the GPs run the local NHS. The Tories have encouraged them to close Labour’s Walk-In Centre’s. So the Camp Hill Walk-In Centre is at risk. Yet the Walk-In Centre provides an essential alternative to the Accident And Emergency Department. If the Walk-In Centre closes it will be severely damaging to the George Elliot Hospital and also to NHS patients.

There is a crisis in the NHS and this decision will make it worse. It is time more people got mad about what is being done to our NHS.

CHILDHOOD experiences can affect your life in all sorts of ways. Our speaker at this months meeting was Stephen Record who spoke on ‘The Hidden World of container shipping’.

His Grandfather and Uncles were seafarers out of Grangemouth and when he was a boy he lived in a quaint cottage alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal where he watched seagoing vessels sailing between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde. Perhaps it was inevitable that his career was to be tied up with shipping.

Stephens first job was as a documentation clerk for motor vehicle spares, sending them around the world in the days before container shipping.

Freighters used to carry loose cargo in sacks and crates of various sizes, crammed into holds and piled on deck by stevedores. During the fifties and sixties inroads were made using modular units of a uniform size that would be filled at the factory, loaded onto truck trailers or trains, then stacked by cranes onto the ship. Container shipping was born and through various developments has increased in size and use by vast amounts. Large container ships, such as the CSCL Globe which has 19,790 containers aboard, were unable to access some of the established ports of the time so new specialised ones were developed, such as Southampton, Felixstowe, London, Liverpool and Belfast.

During his career, forty four years in the shipping industry, Stephen has seen many changes and experienced much but was sad to report that now there are no British based container companies left. Many thanks to Stephen for an interesting and informative talk.

WI pays tribute to two popular members WI

BY SALLY JONES AT Coleshill’s January meeting the WI stood in tribute to two popular members who have recently died, Janet Sanderson from Birmingham Road and Evelyn Masters a much-loved resident of Colehaven.

Mrs Masters who passed away after a short illness aged 90 was a longstanding member of the WI and always joined in enthusiastically with all its activities.

Stephen Fagg, the Musical Director of Coleshill Town Band gave a lively talk on the band’s history and his own career in music.

He recounted how he was the third generation of a family of brass players, including several members of Salvation Army bands. He learned the trumpet at primary school in Kent from a former Royal Marines bandsman and as a teenager turned his talents to conducting, taking a music degree at the Birmingham Conservatoire where he was tutored by the former cornet player with the prestigious Black Dyke Mills Band.

Mr Fagg started playing in the Langley Brass Band in the Black Country but after coming to Coleshill for a successful concert, decided to join the band here and later became its musical director. He explained the role of the 28 different brass band instruments from cornet and trombone to flugelhorn and tuba and described how Coleshill band’s uniform had changed over the years, from a dark green jacket to its current

strip of a black ‘walking out’ jacket and a smart red jacket for concert performances. Coleshill Town Council has sponsored the band since 1992 and it often gives concerts at council and charity events and church services. Founded in 1902 the band has kept going for most of the intervening years, apart from a hiatus during the World Wars and despite occasional acrimonious schisms within its membership.

During the 1940s, Coleshill was the first band to include a woman in its ranks and in the ‘50s it began competing in numerous brass competitions. The longest serving bandsman is bass trombonist George Lewis, who joined in 1966 and is still going strong. Coleshill which now boasts over 100 members including a Beginners’ Section also runs a thriving Youth Band which was founded in 2001 and won the Na-

tional Youth Championships in 2010. Over the years hundreds of youngsters and novices have had the chance to take up a brass instrument free and have enjoyed the camaraderie and excitement of performing with this close-knit group of dedicated amateurs. Coleshill is also well known as an outstanding marching band, thanks to professional-standard training from an ex-Naval man. To underscore the band’s versatility Mr Fagg played a recording of one of their most popular numbers, ‘Sugar Plum Blues’ to great acclaim.

The band’s forthcoming performances include the Coleshill Mayor’s concert on 28th February and the Wild West Themed concert on May 9th, both at the Town Hall plus the Whit Friday Marching Band contest at Saddleworth, Lancashire.

Mr Fagg judged the competition for the prettiest teacup and placed President Christine Jones’s flowered bone china cup first with Betty Oakley second and Joy Hancock third. Members enjoyed a light-hearted ‘Yorkshire Translation’ quiz compiled by Jane Mills, featuring such puzzling phrases as ‘Innitot’ (Warm, isn’t it) and ‘Astle clowt thee iftha dunt gioer’ (I shall hit you if you don’t stop.) The monthly Scrabble afternoons and pub lunches have proved popular as have the weekly darts practices. Members were reminded that February’s competition will be for a bowl of home-grown bulbs. The Spring Group meeting will be held on Thursday March 26th in the Town Hall. The tickets are £7 and will include an entertainment by the popular Ukelele Lady and refreshments plus a Country Market. Visitors very welcome as always.

DR Karen Masters, now a senior lecturer at Portsmouth University’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation, spent the day with our talented year 11 triple scientists and year 8 students as they prepare to choose their options, delivering a Galaxy Zoo STEM workshop.

Karen, who is a former talented student and attended The Coleshill School from 1991 to 1995 scooped this year’s science category of the ‘Women of the Future’ Award for her research into understanding how galaxies form and evolve over the history of the Universe.

Having obtained As and A*s at GCSE she went on to obtain straight As in Physics, Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry at A level. She attended Oxford University in l997 and gained a 1st class degree in Physics. From there she attended Cornell University in New York, gaining a masters in Astronomy and then completed her post doctoral research at Harvard University in Cambridge.

Students thoroughly enjoyed her Galaxy Zoo workshop and were spellbound throughout the day. They learnt all about the Andromeda galaxy, radio telescopes and numerous forms of light and had the opportunity to carry out numerous experiments such as the effects of heat and cold in infra red light and the building of their own spectroscopes to look at the spectra of different illuminated sources.

Sophie Reynolds, a year 8 student said “Today, we had the pleasure of working alongside Dr Karen Masters, a physicist who specialises in astronomy. Dr Masters has had a really successful career and attended Oxford University and Harvard University, however the truly inspiring part of all, is that she first started out in our very own school! Due to her knowledge of her subject, interested students had the chance to ask about different careers in physics. Overall the session was really informative and enjoyable.

We had the opportunity to study the many forms of light and the Andromeda Galaxy which was truly fascinating! Along the way students created their very own CD-spectroscopes to experiment with light and I am sure I speak for all who attended when I say that the whole experience was extremely fascinating! The photographs show some of the students embracing their creative sides and testing out their CD-spectroscopes.

The session was a brilliant way to inspire and engage with everyone and the whole session was really enjoyable for us. Many thanks to the science department for organising and arranging such a brilliant way to learn, this really was a great investment of time!”

Alice Connally another of our year 8 students said, “After the article I wrote about our STEM club was published in The Coleshill Post, a lady called Dr Karen Masters wanted to come in and talk to us about physics and astronomy.

Today has been so interesting! We spent the afternoon listening to her talk all about different galaxies and space and different forms of light. I particularly enjoyed making the spectroscope, an instrument used to measure properties of light over a specific portion of the electromagnetic spectrum and helps us find out what stars are made of. It disperses, or separates, white light from a star into a very wide spectrum of colours. I really enjoyed talking to Dr Masters it was really great to learn new things about astronomy.”

Oliver Hall said, “I really enjoyed using the infra red camera.

We could see the temperature of different objects around the room, including ourselves!”

Hannah Morley also said “I found her talk very interesting indeed and really enjoyed making my spectroscope.”

Miss Kathryn Rollason our STEM Co-ordinator and teacher of Science at the Coleshill School, who organised the visit, said “It has been such a fantastic day of activities for our year 11 and year 8 Physics students. All students loved hearing about Karen’s amazing experiences as an astronomer and all about our nearest galaxy. They particularly enjoyed making their own astronomical instruments out of household materials. We were delighted to be able to welcome Karen back to the school today. She was an incredibly gifted student who has gone on to enjoy a hugely successful career and we know her achievements and passion for science will really inspire the next generation of our scientists, Technologists, Engineers and Mathematicians who regularly attend our STEM club every week from all year groups.”

Karen made the following comments, “It’s been a real pleasure to come back and visit my own school. I hope I’m an example to any student here at The Coleshill School of how anything is possible and that everyone should dream big. I also hope that more students will consider studying Science, particularly Physics following my visit here today”.

What a Carrion!

The Coleshill School Media Production Update On a crisp morning in October a group of intrepid A Level Media Studies students known as Carrion Films started shooting their short film—No Return.

Hannah, Huwen, Chris and Naomi travelled the 40 miles to their chosen location in Worcestershire with provisions, extras and a bucket full of fake blood ready to make one of the most ambitious A Level films ever attempted by students at The Coleshill School.

The project had been months in planning and had seen the group test out make-up and special effects, research into the genre, write an effective script and take care of all of the logistics necessary to get a film shoot off of the ground.

At the location they met up with a professional actor, Adrian, who had been cast in the role and filming began. The shoot went smoothly, with some passing interest from dog walkers and families exploring the woods that served for their setting, but the group let nothing distract them for their task of getting the best footage that they could so that they could produce a heart stopping zombie thriller by the end of it.

With the Director calling wrap on the Sunday all that remains for the group to do is edit the film together and produce appropriate promotional material for it over the coming weeks.

All students involved, both part of the group and those that supported, should be commended on their commitment, ambition and vision. The final product will hopefully be hitting a cinema screen in Birmingham sometime later in the year.

Swords, sweat and some very muddy students promises to deliver a cinematic experience to rival anything that HBO’s Game of Thrones can throw at an audience. Red Leaf Productions have completed principle photography on their sword fight epic The Bear.

Using locations including Coundon in Coventry and various locations in Warwick.

The production team of Dan, Jesse, Harry and Nathan were determined to

capture the right historic tone as well as delivering a huge dose of adrenaline fueled violence for their A Level film production. By working with a professional actor and performance combat specialist, Daniel Gough, alongside a professional fight choreographer, Raph Aldis (Stagefight, Birmingham) the group pushed the boundaries of what is possible with no budget and other studies to worry about.

The centre piece of the film features a complex fight scene featuring real medieval weapons wielded by experienced and dedicated performers. The result is a fast paced fight which would be at home in any medieval action film – certainly not the usual material produced for A Level coursework.

The shoot days were well managed and Red Leaf Productions stayed focused and controlled throughout – even when forced to make some difficult choices. The group are now working on editing the final film together along with producing some promotional material for the film. Look out for the results as part of an exciting new opportunity for Coleshill Media to share what we have been up to.

Leaf It Out! The AS Media students are following the example set by the Year 13 students by having ambitious plans for their coursework productions.

Coleshill Media is proud to announce the creation of three new production groups; Enigma Films, Proton Films and Bullet Productions. All groups will be producing Film Noir projects over the coming weeks and months. They have already written creative scripts which will lead to some very impressive results. They are now moving into the pre-production phase in order to make their visions come to life.

Over the next few weeks they will be securing actors, locations, props and everything else that they will require to create top quality products. We wish them all the luck in the world as they embark on their projects and look forward to seeing the results on the big screen in the summer.

Future or fad THIS month I am going to be test driving a Nissan Leaf for a week.

Hopefully by the end of my test drive I will be able to tell you all the good and bad points of living with the future. For those of you who do not know what a Leaf is, it is classed as the future of motoring. Nissan has taken a big step and not only added an electric motor to their car but taken the combustion engine away. This I thought would mean a lighter car but as the batteries are the only source of energy, they have to cram an awful lot of them in. making the Leaf a really heavy car.

So with the electric motors lugging around all that weight, they still claim a really impressive 124 mile range from 100% to 0% power. This should be able to do most trips from either work or weekend shopping but as the whole car is powered by its batteries, the range will start to dwindle if for example any of your passengers would like a nice 20’C or listen to the radio. With my 40 mile round trip to work and back, mostly done in the dark this time

of year, I will be hoping for a good 80 miles between charging.

Now all of this is to see if electric cars really are usable in the real world as an everyday car or just a fad on its way to more advanced technology. BMW have their new i3 which use an electric motor with batteries but also has a petrol engine for when the batteries run low on charge. The petrol motor is purely used as a generator so it can therefore be much more efficient. This also gives you the choice of packing up the car and driving far north or south on your summer holidays. This does come at a price though as the BMW is nearly 10k more expensive.

Now the BMW is a better set up at this moment in time with the lack of charging points for all electric cars and battery life being a big issue, but it isn’t taking that big enough leap ahead. We all know that one day sooner than later we will all have to move to electric cars. The only thing we have to speculate on is where the electricity is going to come

from. Out the mains socket from a nuclear power station is our best bet for now, but the slow increase of manufacturers starting to invest in hydrogen fuel cells is a very interesting concept. The process has been around for a long time, turning hydrogen into electricity and water but the cost of developing this technology is astronomical. Fortunately Arnold Schwarzenegger’s California is biting the bullet and investing in hydrogen technology and you are now able to rent hydrogen cars.

All this comes back to the Nissan Leaf.

If this car is

practical enough for the average person to live with and balances out the cost of the vehicle to the money saved in fuel bills, it will be the stepping stone into better research and development of the one thing that will stay a constant in all of our future transport. The batteries.

New Year and new opportunity

BY PHIL SALINAS Now we are in a new year figures have been published showing that house price growth in 2014 grew throughout the Uk at around 8% and most forecasters expect the Uk housing market to continue to grow in 2015 at an average of 4%.

There are regional variances but these forecasts underline a growing confidence in the UK market. Lenders have also brought out some of the lowest mortgage rates seen for a very long time driven by lower cost of funds in the money markets and a need to be competitive as lending levels slowed towards the end of 2014.

The result of these two factors mean that consumers can now buy in to a market which is forecast to rise and with very cheap mortgage rates. You should always ensure that you can afford your mortgage not only when rates are this low but also if interest rates increase and your mortgage payments rise in the future.

In the last 6 months we have also seen fuel prices fall and household energy costs are starting to fall as well all of which mean UK consumers will feel better off. The consequence of this is that the economy is now forecast to grow quicker than previously expected and will add

to peoples’ confidence to make major decisions like move home or buy for the first time. Early signs are an increase of properties being put up for sale and buyers eager to view and agree purchases.

A Guide for First Time Buyers (England & Wales, The Costs) In the first article I covered the process of purchasing your home covering the main points you need to consider. I will now detail main the costs involved in buying your first home and obtaining a mortgage for it.

Mortgage Costs When applying for a mortgage there are several different fees which may become payable however they vary depending on the deal offered by the lender. The main ones are booking fees, arrangement fees and valuation fees. Generally booking fees if payable are paid when you apply for the mortgage and arrangement fees can be paid upfront or added to the loan. It does depend on the mortgage deal but booking fees can vary from £99 to £199 whereas arrangement fees are generally greater.Other fees can be payable and will depend on the particular lender and deal offered and so vary.

The other significant fee which can apply to obtaining a mortgage is the valuation fee. There

are essentially three types of valuation or survey which can be carried out. The one required to obtain a mortgage is a valuation for mortgage purposes or basic valuation. This is where the lender will instruct a licensed surveyor to carry out a valuation on behalf of the lender so that they can determine if they are happy to lend their money on the property you wish to buy. It is important to understand that it is for their benefit and not yours even when you have paid the fee for it and should not base your decision on whether the lender accepts the result of it.

The next level of report is a home buyers report which is instructed through the lender and incorporates the basic valuation but also provides a report for your benefit and is directed at the buyer on which you are entitled to base a decision whether to continue to purchase the property. The most detailed report available is a full structural survey and is usually instructed by the buyer when one of the first two types of report recommend it or as a buyer you decide you want a more detailed report due to something which you want looked at more thoroughly.

Costs of buying a home This is not exhaustive but the main costs involved are solicitor fees, disbursements and stamp duty. A solicitor will always provide you with a detailed breakdown of costs which will show their fee and this will usually include an amount for the work they do on behalf of the lender in respect of the mortgage secured on the property. The disbursements (fees the solicitor pays out on your behalf) will also be detailed. They will also detail how much of any stamp duty is payable on the purchase and with the changes which came in to force in December for a lot of people these costs have reduced.

Danger in the Garden!

Im not talking about hanging baskets dropping on your head or tripping over a cunningly concealed gnome but, on a serious note, ther average garden can be a very dangerous place for pets.

If we’re caring and responsible pet owners we make sure that the animals we’re responsible for are protected by vaccinations and a careful diet.

We certainly dont deliberately put them at risk in your gardens but the number of plants that can poison cats and dogs is, quite frankly, both amazing and alarming.

Here are some of them. You can go online for a far more extensive list Azaleas, delphiniums, rhodedendrons, sweet peas, hostas, carnations, gypsophilia, foxgloves, lupins, begonias, hydrangeas, cyclamen, ivy, lily of the valley, oleanders, wisteria and gladioli are all harmful. Some parts of these plants are more dangerous than others and frequently its the roots or tubers that can do the most damage.

ly. Dogs in particular might be tempted to play with bulbs if we’re careless about where we keep them before and while we’re planting them. We’re unlikely to leave cans of weedkiller about but it’s sometimes easy to forget to wash their containers thoroughly after we use them. It’s always wise to read the small print on the labels of any chemical (organic or not) we plan to use carefully when we’re choosing a product.

Care should also be taken with slug pellets and especially if using poison to get rid of rats or mice. Beware too of using cocoa bark as a mulch if you have a dog. Make sure that bird feeders are cleaned regularly too.

It goes without saying that if you suspect that your pet has eaten something that is causing it distress you should seek help of your vet without delay. Fortunately, most animals have fairly good sense of self-preservation and ive yet to hear of a dog that munches aloe veras or poinsettias indoors (both harmful) or a cat that munches on wisteria. However, sensible precautuions on our part might just prevent a tragedy.

SERIES CONTINUED: The Coleshill and District Civic Society HERITAGE

The last edition of the Post outlined the reason for the formation of the Civic Society, this month we continue the story and tell how the how the society was created and some of the first things we did.

The first AGM was held in November.1964. Again, it is worth quoting verbatim from the minutes:

“Relations have been established with the permanent staff of the M.R.D.C., whose unfailing courtesy, cooperation and tolerance have been a source of great assistance to the officers of the Society. The Rural District Council itself has not seen fit itself to cooperate very markedly with the Society except in its kindness in lending its premises for the meetings of the Society and for this the Society wishes to record its gratitude.

With regard to the proposed demolition of Old Bank House, the position remains the same, and formal application has been made by the planning authority of Warwick for its demolition. The Society is still in communication with the Ministry on this subject and hopes that an inspection and enquiry will be held at which they will be invited to be present. They wish to reiterate at this meeting

that in the opinion of at least two well-known architects this demolition is entirely unwarranted and unjustifiable.”

The two architects in question were Noel Hastilow, ARIBA, and Trevor Ineson, ARIBA. They were to have tremendous influence in the years ahead in helping the Society. They drew up plans for a facelift for Coleshill, but sadly it came to nothing, The Society grew in strength. By 1965 membership reached the 100 mark. It adopted, at Doris Wall’s suggestion, the motto of the Kent Amenity Society “to Cherish the Past, to Adorn the Present, to Create for the Future” In that same year other planning matters arose.

The Swan Hotel sadly decided that its arch must go, the arch through which countless coaches

had passed “and the Royal Mail” too, in Georgian times. The Civic Society protested but to no avail.

Also in this year the Old Grammar School Foundation applied to build 28 houses in the field behind the School. This time the Society was successful in its opposition; the field is still there.

In Jan 1966 the MRDC obviously decided they could not withstand any more public pressure, so put the building up for sale. Three months later, in Doris Wall’s words, “Help arrived from a most unexpected source”. A letter arrived from A. Walker and Son, builders, saying that they had bought Old Bank House and were going to preserve it by turning it into flats. Mr Ray Walker was present and was thanked personally.

It turned out that Walkers now owned all the square of land bounded by Church Hill, Lower

High St and Blythe Rd. They built shops on the High St, and then, when their architect came to design Mornington Court, they invited our own architects to comment on the plans.

Their suggestions included varying the roof line, the texture and colour of the buildings. The result is very pleasing. This is one of the very few times that we have been asked to join at the planning stage of a development.

Meanwhile the MRDC were still acquiring all the property along the South side of Church Hill and along High St. to St Peter’s Walk and the Society was doing all it could to marshal public opinion to save them. The MRDC then applied to knock the whole lot down and build, quote, ‘an area of comprehensive redevelopment’. Ultimately, in 1972, the MRDC gave in and incorporated all the existing High St in their new scheme: it had taken nine years. This part of the High St. is now a joy to behold.

The Start of an Archive Collection

At the AGM of 1968 Doris Wall reported ‘that a spirit of lethargy was creeping into the Society’. This 'lethargy' is not very obvious; for instance, a minute of later that year states ‘the MRDC, having heard that the Society was wishing to acquire Stocks House next to the Market Hall as a museum, promptly instigated a Demolition Order’.

There followed much Press coverage and nothing more happened. (The Press loved Doris Wall and Frank Morgan – they were so outspoken.)

FAILURE IN CHURCH HILL SOUTH SIDE

In July, 1968 the MRDC started to demolish the South side of Church Hill. That battle was lost. The Society wished it to be left as an open space. It was not to be. Blocks of flats were to be built. Canon Morgan called a press conference but to no avail.

Sadly in 1971 Canon Morgan retired to the South and we lost an enthusiastic campaigner to whom Coleshill meant so much.

In 1966 the Society bought its first artefact, a basinette, belonging to the Stanley family from Hawkswell Hall.

Hawkswell Hall was later demolished to make way for the M6 and Mrs Wall obtained its foundation stone, marked ' S.B. J.B. 1618.' (These initials referred to the old Blyth family.)

Both these artefacts were then housed for years in the Parish Church, courtesy of the vicar, and are now housed in the Old Market Hall.

At the AGM of 1967, Eric Miller and Harold Varley, both owning shops on the High St and both wonderful photographers, presented their collections of albums and slides to the Society. These gifts began the Society’s Archives. The archives are still maintained in a room within the Old Market Hall. Permission to hold the archives locally was given to the Civic Society by Warwickshire County Records Office. After this permission was given, various members of the civic society worked exceedingly hard in preparing the small room at the back of the Old Market Hall. There are now over 1000 items in our catalogue, some containing collections of items. Special mention must be made of Alan Jackson, without whose drive it is doubtful the archives would still exist, Derek Young who designed our software and especially Chris Lewis and his encyclopaedic knowledge of Coleshill over many years.

Dear Editor, In response to Mark Jones’s letter published online on 30th January, I should make it clear that the purpose of my original letter was to bring attention to the fact that the HS2 depot, originally planned for Washwood Heath, was remaining in Washwood Heath and was not moving to Coleshill. It was also to clarify that Coleshill Labour Party had always opposed such a move. Such clarification was unfortunately necessary as Councillor Fowler, in a campaign leaflet, had indicated otherwise.

I note that Mr Jones does not contradict the content of my letter (or of any previously) but is merely a bit miffed that I’ve held Councillor Fowler, a man who holds public office, accountable for his actions.

I cannot see that using a public forum to hold an elected official to account is in any way improper.

On the contrary I believe it to be my democratic duty. Additionally I do not think that the timing of Mr Jones’s letter is a coincidence. Coleshill residents will not have failed to notice that Mr Jones has begun to appear alongside Councillor Fowler in party political literature for May’s elections. This gives us an obvious clue to Mr Jones’ true motives.

As for Mr Jones’ bizarre ramblings about me, well, let him ramble. That is his democratic right.

All I will say is that both Peter Fowler and Mark Jones have stood for co-option to the Town Council in the last two years. We must assume Mr Jones has only developed such distaste for co-option since he failed to succeed.

Finally, Mr Jones failed in his letter to acknowledge the key local source of opposition to HS2, namely Coleshill HS2 Action Group. They, more than anyone else, deserve recognition for their tireless and unstinting work in holding HS2 Ltd to account and attempting to ensure a better deal for local residents. Their most recent activity was to present Coleshill’s petition for an amendment to the plans to parliament. We await the select committee’s reply with interest but, regardless of the outcome, I would hope that all Coleshill people would extend their thanks to this hard-working group of volunteers.

Dear Editor, In response to a letter published

by Harry Taylor in your previous issue I am sure you will offer a right of reply and ensure a fair and balanced argument.

I think residents are becoming bored of Mr Taylor’s sour grapes over losing the election 2 years ago. Instead of being magnanimous in defeat, all Mr Taylor and his labour friends seem to have done is mount a personal campaign against Cllr Fowler; each issue of this very paper carries something of this context.

I would therefore suggest it is Mr Taylor and friends who are providing the ‘dirty tricks’.

Having lost out in local elections in Arley in 2011, Mr Taylor tried his luck and lost in Coleshill in 2013. He has of course managed to ensure he

was co-opted onto the Town Council (without a vote from residents). Perhaps his continued sour-grapes suggests he beour Councillor despite what the people of Coleshill have voted.

Local residents will of course be also delighted that the Labour MP Liam Byrne was not successful in his campaign to try and move the proposed HS2 depot from Washwood Heath to nearer Coleshill- something that Cllr Fowler and MP Dan Byles successfully campaigned against.

In the upcoming elections let us all debate current and local issues professionally and properly and let the Resident of Coleshill make their own mind up. They always have in the past and I trust them to do so this time as well.

Coleshill United Church: A brief history

BY REVEREND ROBERT ASH THE United Church on Coventry Road, Coleshill, was built in 1900 as a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel and remained as a Methodist Church until 1970 when it was joined by the Congregation Church in Coleshill.

Since that date both congregations have worshipped together and have been known as ‘Coleshill United Church’. It is one of the earliest Local Ecumnical Partnerships (L.E.PS) that exists.

The Congregational wing of the Church became part of the new United Reformed Church in 1972 when the Congregationalist joined the English Presbyterians. In 1981 and 2000 saw The Church of Christ and the Scottish Congregationalist join the Union respectively.

It was in the Summer of 2008 that a catastrophe appeared to hit the church when dry rot was found, which affected the floor and the roof beams of the sanctuary of the church. The cost of the work was given as £18,000, a sum far beyond the amount that the small congregation had and with other problems rearing their ugly heads the estimate became £22,000.

A church Council meeting was held and those present were far from feeling heavily burdened. Indeed to the contrary they

took what had happening as a sign of opportunity and growth. Suggestions were made to open the church for community use by changing the interior of the church by removing the pews and having chairs.

Also refitting the kitchen and redecorating the church hall and laying a new floor.

With due diligence the congregation set about the task they had set themselves.

Fund raising ensured that the money was found to eliminate the dry rot. With the help of the Probation Service the Sanctuary was redecorated. The pews were removed and carpet laid on the floor. The old organ, which had wood warm, was confined to the scrap heap and a new electronic one purchased. Comfy sturdy chairs were purchased and new overhead lighting installed.

Over recent years all that was set out has been achieved. The kitchen has been refurbished and the hall transformed with new light wooden boards on the walls and new floor. The walls and ceiling decorated and new blinds hung to the windows. The old trestle tables have been replaced with light modern tables. A small meeting room has also gone through a transformation and is now used not only for small group meetings but also as a quiet space for prayer and contemplation. There is also a book case which houses a library of books on the Christian Faith.

The church now hosts a number of activities to serve the community.

Then on Wednesday 14th January the Business46 team consisting of Anna Plotnek of AP Designs, Penny Sheward of MCD Recruitment and Jemma James of TruTac, held their monthly breakfast networking event at the Coleshill Hotel.

The topic for the morning was ‘Avoiding the Pitfalls of Workplace Pensions’ and speaker Andrew Hope of Workplace Pensions Online provided a valuable insight into this complex issue. Andrew explained how his company helps small to medium businesses, accountants and financial advisers to implement and maintain a cost-effective workplace pension scheme in accordance with new regulations.

Over 25 local businesses braved the cold winter morning to attend. The morning was highly productive with lots of business cards being exchanged and various new members. Since starting in November 2013 the group has gone from strength to strength and recently launched a membership scheme to facilitate further growth and provide extra membership services.

Jemma said “A membership scheme was being requested by attendees. We listened to their requests and realised we could add more services to help members network and grow.”

Anna commented “We have various exciting events lined up and with the launch of our membership packages, 2015 is already proving to be a highly exciting year.”

Not only does the group support local businesses but also schools, charities and sporting clubs. As a result of their Christmas party in December they raised £600 and are presenting a cheque to Woodlands School at the end of January.

Penny added “we are extremely proud of the group and how we’ve helped local businesses and schools since it launched.”

The next Business46 event will be at the Norton Arms Inn on Station Lane, Coleshill on Wednesday 11th May at 7.30am. There are limited spaces for this event and bookings will be prioritised. New online service to help those looking for the right tattoo artist www.thetattoobook.co.uk

WHEN former Tattoo Shop owner Warren Sturridge came up with a new business idea, he could not have imagined just how successful it would be.

He came up with the idea when found himself with a lot of spare time on his hands.

Warren told us: “When I was running the tattoo studio I had to spend a fortune on advertising, which, to be honest wasn't bringing much trade. I could'nt understand why there wasn't an online, one-stop shop directory solely for tattoo artists, studios, piercers etc. That's when I came up with the idea for TheTattooBook.co.uk. I did some research and found a few similar directories, but none with the same level of functionality of The Tattoo Book.”

With some help from The Rural Growth Network and in particular Rita Booth, Warren began to piece together all of the neccesary elements required to bring his ideas to life.

He Continued: “I started in the obvious place, which was sourcing a company that could build the website.

But it took a few attempts and several months before I finally found Anthony Hall Media (www.anthonyhallmedia.co.uk) who have created thousands of websites” “The help I received from Rita and the Rural Growth Network was invaluable. I learned so much about how to run the business as well as other things like maintaining the back end of websites and so on. It really helped to build my confidence.”

TheTattooBook.co.uk is a national website which brings customers and Tattoo artists together by allowing customers to review their experiences online.

Where it differs from most other services is that each Artist has to be vetted and registered by TheTattooBook before they are allowed to become members.

Then each review is filled out on a card and posted FREEPOST to Warren where his team then vets the reviewer. This means that every single artist and review are 100% bonifide and cannot be faked in anyway.

Warrren already has the backing of major industry supplier STARR who, through the website, offer amazing deals to members giving that extra incentive to attract artists to the site.

Warwickshire County Council has been selected by DEFRA, as one of five counties in England to run this new pilot business support programme focusing on rural areas.

You will be given a dedicated business coach, who will work with you to develop a bespoke action plan, to launch a new business or kick start business growth. You and your business coach will work through your journey, to achieve your goals.

Sarah Ball, Owner of Sarah’s Beauty Lounge made the brave decision earlier this year (2014) to grow her business, into a full-time business venture. Recognising the value of knowing what help was available for small companies such as hers, she contacted Warwickshire Rural Growth Network’s partner Pera Consulting (UK) Ltd, for business support and guidance.

Sarah met with Rita Booth, business coach at Pera Consulting (UK) Ltd in early August 2014, to discuss her business and how to develop new markets to best suit a full-time beauty therapy business venture.

Sarah and Rita explored ways in which the business could grow and how marketing strategies might be developed to stimulate interest in the treatments and products that Sarah’s Beauty Lounge offers.

Following this initial meeting, Sarah and Rita have worked together to develop an agreed action plan

that helps the business implement its marketing strategies, whilst still giving Sarah sufficient time to focus on delivering her “wow factor” beauty treatments. This action plan included an exploration of the types of marketing activity available, identifying which activities will reach people interested in the specific product and treatment ranges offered by Sarah’s Beauty Lounge and how to implement marketing strategies, as well as developing Sarah’s own business and management skills. The overall aim was to ensure that a long-term and sustainable business is developed.

Through face-to-face coaching sessions with Rita and regular support outside of each session by email and telephone contact, Sarah has begun to implement the marketing plan. To date, Sarah has successfully organised an event to launch her latest beauty therapy treatment and product range, which has attracted new clients and bookings, as well as launching a new website www.sarahsbeautylounge. com. Sarah continues to engage with her marketing activity and generate new contacts, through an ever growing network of word of mouth recommendations.

With the professional support and guidance from business coach, Rita Booth, Sarah’s Beauty Lounge continues to grow from strength-to-strength.

“I have been working with Rita over the last few months in her role as business coach, Rita has helped me with marketing my business and the areas I should focus on in order to generate more revenue.

In addition to this Rita has also put me in touch with contacts that will open up new avenues, such as pop-up shops in the surrounding areas in order to further build up my existing client base.

I was apprehensive at first to move away from teaching, as I have always worked alongside being self employed, therefore if my diary was quiet at least I knew I had a wage still coming in. Rita has helped me understand business cash flow forecasts and how this affects these "quiet times" and how hopefully in the future the busy times will counter balance these quiet times, building my hobby and love of beauty into a full time career. She has also encouraged me to keep teaching, and in the future I hope to build teaching into my business on a consulting/private basis. Coleshill Cricket Club: 2015 Adult Cricket Programme

Coleshill Cricket Club’s 2015 adult cricket season preparations are well underway this January. The Memorial Park based Club are gearing up for their winter practice sessions which begin in early February.

The Club, as unveiled in November 2014, are keen for its 1st XI to return to the Premier League of the Warwickshire Cricket League. The Team, which was severely frustrated by the wet weather in the 2014 season, are keen to make a positive start in 2015.

Club Captain Peter Magafas explained “We have a good set of players, with a sound mix of youth and experience, so we have the ability to be pushing for promotion. We are actively looking to recruit an additional opening batsmen, spinner and wicket keeper to strengthen our senior squad. The Club has a solid junior section and we are investing heavily in our infrastructure to help attract new players”.

The Club are currently in the process of a delivering a huge improvement programme to its Memorial Park Sports Centre, based at Memorial Park.

The Club’s adult and junior teams will have brand new changing and shower room facilities in 2015.

Other sporting teams will have their changing fa-

cilities revamped later in 2015 also. This is thanks to grant investment by the Club, Coleshill Town Council, Sport England, SITA Trust, ECB and the Coleshill Parish Trust.

If you are interested in playing adult cricket for Coleshill CC, the Club’s indoor practice sessions begin on Wednesday 4th February 8.00-9.30pm @ Smiths Wood Sports College, Windward Way, Smiths Wood. The Club will be running nets and personal coaching sessions, run by its three Level 2 ECB qualified Coaches.

Bradley faces Ryan for Commonwealth title and AJ debuts in North East BRADLEY Saunders and Anthony Joshua will headline a huge show at the Metro Radio Arena as Matchroom bring live Sky Sports boxing to Newcastle on April 4.

Saunders will take on Dave Ryan for the Commonwealth Light Welterweight title, while Joshua will be fighting in his 12th pro fight after facing former World title challenger Kevin Johnson for the WBC International Heavyweight title in London next month.

Ryan upset the odds when he won the Commonwealth belt against Tyrone Nurse in October, taking a majority decision in Leeds, while Saunders has become one of the hottest prospects in British boxing as he has stormed his way to 11-0 with eight knockouts, and has his sights set on continuing his rapid rise onto the World stage in 2015.

Olympic gold medallist Joshua is also anticipating a huge year, and successful outings in London and Newcastle should lead him towards a huge domestic clash.

Information regarding Anthony Crolla vs Richard Abril WBA World Lightweight title fight postponed DUE to injuries suffered by Anthony Crolla after challenging burglars near his home, his WBA World Lightweight title challenge against Richard Abril has been postponed.

Hit me with your best shot THOMAS (HITMAN) Hearne’s was in the Midlands just before Christmas and the former World champion was no disappointment to waiting fans.

Named as one of the 80s Four Kings which included Duran, Haglar and Leonard, Tommy Hearne’s was born in Memphis Tennessee USA and was known as the Motor City Cobra and was the first ever boxer in history to win World Titles in four different weights.

Winning 61 fights 48 wins by KO 1 draw with only 5 losses he became one of the World’s most famous fighters ever.

His only losses were at the hands of Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Iran Barkley twice and against Uriah Grant when he stepped up to Cruiserweight.

Tommy was at The Premier Suit in Cannock with the former ABA Heavyweight boxer Scott Murray.

He has already had Duran and Leonard at his venue and will be finalising his list of all four when Marvin Haglar will be visiting the same venue in March to April this year…

Middleweights line-up confirmed for Winter Gardens in February BRIAN Rose’s WBC International Light Middleweight title fight against Carson Jones will top a Prizefighter Middleweights bill at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool on Saturday, February 14, live on Sky Sports.

Rose’s clash with Jones was originally scheduled for January 23 in Manchester but following the postponement of that bill the Blackpool boxer will now have the chance to fight in front of a hometown crowd as he continues his charge for a second World title shot.

American Jones is familiar on these shores after he gave Kell Brook the fight of his life in July 2012 and returned for a rematch 12 months later.

The bout tops an exciting Prizefighter Middleweights line-up with five fighters putting their ‘0’ on the line.

The unbeaten quintet are Tom Doran, Mick Hall, Craig Cunningham (all 11-0),

Luke Keeler (7-0) and Blackpool’s own Jack Arnfield (17-0). They are joined by Cumbria’s Liam Conroy (7-2), Peterborough’s 'Dangerous' Cello Renda (25-10-2) and Warren Tansey (10-1), who fights for the first time in 14 months.

The Club are setting up its first Junior Girls Section, which was unveiled at the Coleshill Xmas Fair in November 2014.

Female cricket has become very popular in recent years but as recent evidence shows that there are not enough girls getting involved in organised sport. At present no female sport takes place at the Memorial Park. To tackle this Sport England has launched the ‘This Girl Can’ national campaign, which is a celebration of active women up and down the country. The campaign was launched during a Coronation Street advert break and the YouTube video has had over 4 million hits.

To support the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign, Coleshill CC and Complete Cricket Coaching will be running the first Coleshill CC Girls Summer Coaching Programme. The sessions will be starting on Wednesday May 6th and will run every Wednesday night up to July 15th from 6.00pm - 7.00pm at Memorial Park, Coleshill.

The programme is aimed at Girls aged 6 - 11 and covers softball cricket. The Club and Complete Cricket Coaching will be providing fully ECB and DBS qualified coaches, with all playing equipment supplies.

Adam Harrison, Coleshill CC Junior Cricket Manager and Chairman explained, “This is a really exciting initiative for the Club and I am really looking to it. Complete Cricket Coaching are providing some excellent coaches and we hope we can get a Women’s England International Cricketer to launch the Girls section.

“I must thank North Warwickshire Borough Council, Cllr Dominic Ferro and Chestnut Tree Nursery for their financial support to this programme. This initiative supports the ongoing investment at the

Memorial Park and at the Memorial Park Sports Centre, which is making the Park a hotbed for sporting and recreational activities.”

During January the Club’s winter indoor coaching programme began at the New Coleshill Leisure Centre. The sessions run every Sunday 4.45-5.45pm, cater for Hardball and Softball cricket sessions and focus on ages 6 to 14. The Club’s junior sides will play competitive matches in the Warwickshire Cricket Board League’s at Under 9s, Under 11s and Under 14s age groups in 2015. The Club are also exploring entering into a softball under 8s league.

Things are progressing nicely at Packmeadow

COLESHILL Town FC have now reached the mid point of the season and it’s usually around this time that the weather begins to influence fixtures.

This has been the case, with hardly any football by Coleshill Town teams over the last couple of weekends, mainly due to frozen pitches.

From a 1st team point of view this has given manager, Paul Casey, chance to give his squad some time off to recharge their batteries ready for the second half of the season. The manager has also been busy in the transfer market, wheeling and dealing, to ensure Coleshill Town are in a position to push for an even higher league position than last years record breaking 4th position. The team currently lie in 5th place in the Midland Football League Premier Division but have some important, season defining, fixtures coming up in the next few weeks. Coleshill visit 2nd placed Basford Utd on 31st Jan followed by a visit to table topping Long Eaton Utd, the following week, 7th Feb. The outcome of these 2 fixtures, along with the games in hand Coleshill currently have, will certainly have an impact on Coleshill Town’s final league position Sandwiched in between the 2 mentioned league games, is the small matter of a Birmingham Senior Cup, quarter final fixture against Rushall Olympic.

Rushall, from Evo-stik Northerm Premier League (2 divisions above Coleshill) are managed by ex WBA player, Richard Sneekes and include the likes of Dele Adebola, ex Birmingham City striker, amongst their players. The game is a home tie at Packmeadow for Coleshill Town on 3rd February 7.45pm kick off. It will be a stern test for the team so lets hope the players are up for it.

Coleshill Town Reserves are continuing to cement their place in the Midland Football League Reserve Team Div 1. This is the first season for the current reserve team set-up, and the management team of Paul Dolan and Simon Lyons, have worked hard in establishing the team and providing invaluable support for the 1st team, working closely with Paul Casey. Despite the problems of not being able to field a settled side, due to abstractions, the Reserve team sits 3rd in the league and currently on a 10 game unbeaten run, stretching back to October 2014 Coleshill Town Ladies play in the Birmingham County Womens League Div 2 and are taking the league by storm. It is fair to say that even at this point in the season the league title will be between Coleshill and Wednesfield Ladies. Wednesfield are

currently top of the table winning every game this season. Coleshill Ladies are in second place with only 1 defeat so far…to Wednesfield! Coleshill Town Ladies have scored over 100 goals in 11 league games, conceding only 10. In Niamh Deasy, they have a lethal striker, who has, so far, scored 46 goals in the 10 games she has played!

The junior section of the club is also establishing itself, where most teams are in their first season playing as Coleshill Town FC. Coleshill Town Under 18’s, playing in the Tamworth Junior League, currently sit second in the table and are certainly contenders for the title. The Under 16’s and Under 13’s currently sit top of their respective age Premier Divisions in the Central Warwick League. The Under 14’s sit mid table, in Div 2 of Central Warwick. League. The Under 18’s playing in Midland Junior Premier League sit 15th in a table of 36 teams (teams only play each other once during season) The Under 7 and 8’s do not play “competitive” fixtures, where results are recorded, but all the players, having come from last years Soccer School, are enjoying their first season being part of a team. The management teams, in their first season also, are experiencing the highs and lows of kids football. But the teams are now well established in the Central Warwick League and will grow in strength.

It is hoped that next season there will be more junior teams, swelling the ranks of Coleshill Town, even further.

The Soccer School, was relaunched in early January and “trains” at the Packmeadow ground on a Saturday morning at 10.30am. The Club is looking for the next wave of youngster, male or female to fill the ranks of the soccer school and progress to League football next season.

As regards Coleshill Town FC facilities, negotiations are on going for major improvements to the Packmeadow Ground.
