Junior Roosters through to semi finals

A win by the Cobar Roosters Under 10s on Saturday will now see them progress to this week’s semi finals of the Dubbo & District Junior Rugby League competition.

Like their senior league counterparts, the Cobar Under 10s side finished third in their age division, with St Johns Blue claiming bragging rights at the top of the table ahead of St Johns Gold (two teams the Cobar side has recorded wins over this season).

Cobar ran all over their Dubbo Macquarie opposition on Saturday at Dubbo scoring 10 tries to finish with a resounding 52-0 win.

George Wainiqolo and Hugo Josephson scored doubles with Eligh Ritter, Sonny Stephens, Kasalia Fakahua, Alfie Toomey, Taj Goonrey and Jack Mitchell all crossing for a try each for Cobar.

Dusty McDonald, Austin Kane, Bria-June Brookman, Charlie Miller, along with Sonny and George landed a goal each.

Bria-June earned the Players’ Player honour while the Coaches Award was shared by Austin and George.

The Under 10s side heads back to Dubbo this week to take on the Warren Bulldogs in the elimination semi final.

The Roosters have only played the Bulldogs once prior this season, and at that encounter in Round 11 on July 29 at Warren, it was the Bulldogs who came out on top winning, 28-18.

The young Roosters have played consistently well all season with multiple players proving they can score tries, including Eligh Ritter, who with 19 tries this season, is equal 4th in the Under 10s for try stats.

The Cobar Under 9s played their last game of the season on Saturday up against Dubbo Macquarie.

In the uncontested game, Nixon Small and Indie Burke touched down for two tries each with Liam Cain, Keelan Atuau, Ashton Campbell and Josh Gillette also crossing for a try each.

The Roosters Under 11’s went down 46-12 against Macquarie in what was their final game of the season on Saturday.

Tommy George and Eligh Ritter scored Cobar’s two tries with conversions kicked by Tommy and Judd Josephson.

The Coaches Award went to Dustin Newham with Bria-June Brookman earning the Players Player for the second time that day.

The Roosters Under 13s were beaten 66-6 by their South Dubbo Raiders opposition.

Cohan Nicholson was their lone try scorer with Rowdy Barton responsible for the conversion.

Lachie Brookman was voted Players’ Player with the Coaches Award going to Aiden Hyland.

Cobar’s Under 14’s were also beaten in their last game of the season going down to the South Dubbo Raiders 60-0 on Saturday.

Cobar was short on players and were helped out by Dean-Aaron Langlands from the opposition who earned Cobar’s Players’ Player title for his efforts.

Three hole playoff needed to find

Foursome winners

There were 13 golf teams vying for the 2023 Foursomes Championship title on Saturday which needed a three hole playoff to decide the winners.

Julie Livingston and Alec Fraser were victorious over Karen Manns and Mark ‘George’ Fraser, after both teams had 117 off the stick for the 27 holes.

The ball competition Net winners on the day were Manns and Fraser with 91 ½ net.

Marlene Wynd and grandson Tom Best were runners-up with 99 ¼ net, and in third place were Livingston and Alec Fraser on a countback from Serena and Stewart Fraser, after both teams had 102 net.

The ladies’ Nearest the Pin prize on the 8th hole went to Livingston and Scott Mayne won the men’s prize on the 3rd hole.

In the Ladies’ competition, Fay Hardwick was Sunday’s Trophy Day winner with +5. Glenda Peebles was runner-up on +4 while a countback was then needed to separate Geraldine Francisco and Barb Barklimore, on +3 each.

Julie Livingston, Geraldine Francisco and Ann Dunn all had Nearest the Pin wins on the 8th hole.

There were eight players in last Wednesday’s Stableford game which saw Brenda Fugar come away with the win after scoring an impressive 38 points.

Susan Goonrey was next best on 34 points while Sally Bannister had 32 points.

Fay Hardwick finished with 31 points and also won the A Grade Nearest the Pin prize on the 7th hole.

The A and B Grade contenders could not stay on the fairway to claim their Nearest the Pin prizes.

A Stableford will be played today and the Vets will hold their open over 18 holes on Friday.

The weekend will be a busy time for Cobar lady golfers with the Peak Gold Mine sponsored Canadian (select own partner) game on Saturday and the Epiroc-sponsored Cobar Ladies Open over 27 holes, will be contested on Sunday. (Tee off 9am.)
