Queensland Students Swap Textbooks for Snorkels in New Great

Barrier Reef Education Program

Kangaroo Bus Lines and Dive Spear and Sport launch immersive 5-day learning program at the Southern Great Barrier Reef — with rebates of up to $150 available per student.

Queensland students are set to swap textbooks for snorkels with the launch of 1770 Reef Discoveries — a groundbreaking 5-day school excursion combining reef science, Australian history, and hands-on reef conservation — creating the next generation of reef guardians.

Developed in partnership between Kangaroo Bus Lines (KBL) and Dive Spear and Sport 1770, 1770 Reef Discoveries Education Program takes Year 6 and Year 9 students on a safe, seamless journey to the Town of 1770 — a place of layered histories where students can explore the 1770 landing of James Cook, marking the beginning of Queensland’s colonial story, alongside the fascinating natural history of the region. From its unique coastal geography to the ancient coral reefs that have shaped the local environment for millennia.

Exploring Lady Musgrave Island

As part of the 1770 Reef Discoveries itinerary, students visit Lady Musgrave Island, a pristine coral cay surrounded by a protected lagoon. Known as the “Jewel of the Southern Great Barrier Reef,” the site is home to an extraordinary array of marine life — from colourful corals and schools of tropical fish to rays, and nesting turtles. For many students, it is their first time experiencing the sheer diversity of the Reef up close, making it both an educational and life-changing encounter.

From the Past to the Future

The program draws a powerful parallel from the era of early explorers charting new coastlines, through the arrival of European navigators, to today’s young Australians stepping forward as reef guardians, protecting the Great Barrier Reef for generations to come.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The 5-day 1770 Reef Discoveries itinerary includes:

• SDI Snorkelling Certification, led by Dive Spear and Sport’s accredited instructors.

• Citizen science reef monitoring, where students collect real-world coral health data.

• Exploration of 1770’s layered histories, from early European exploration to the region’s role in modern reef science.

• Guided reef and coastal adventures designed to ignite curiosity and environmental stewardship.

• Understanding the connectedness of coastal habitats and the reef, showing how mangroves, saltmarshes, and beaches sustain the reef ecosystem.

“For decades we’ve carried students safely to camps and excursions, but the Great Barrier Reef is unlike any other classroom. We saw an opportunity — and a responsibility — to help bring reef education to life. By developing 1770 Reef Discoveries Education Program with Dive Spear and Sport, we’re ensuring young Australians don’t just read about the Reef, they experience it, study it, and learn how to protect it. If we want the Reef to thrive for generations to come, then inspiring the next generation of reef guardians has to start now,” said Daniel Ades, Group Manager, Kangaroo Bus Lines.

Affordable and Accessible

Every student participating can receive a rebate of up to $150, making the program more accessible for schools and families. With KBL’s free teacher travel policy (one teacher per ten students), 1770 Reef Discoveries delivers maximum educational and personal impact at an affordable price.

Connecting Classrooms to the Reef

Kangaroo Bus Lines provides modern, seatbelt-equipped, GPS-tracked coaches to ensure comfortable and safe travel for schools anywhere across Queensland — including the 5½-hour journey from Brisbane to 1770. Their extensive fleet allows them to support schools from regional and metropolitan areas alike. Dive Spear and Sport, operating from the 1770 Marina, delivers the in-water expertise and reef experiences with safety-certified instructors and locally owned vessels. Together, the partnership guarantees an experience that is professional, sustainable, and tailored to school needs.

“1770 Reef Discoveries is about weaving history, science, and the natural world into one transformative experience,” said Carmen Bolton, Director of Dive Spear and Sport. “The Town of 1770 is where Queensland’s written history began — and it’s also the gateway to understanding how our coastal environments and the Great Barrier Reef are connected, and why their future matters.”

Supporting Regional Queensland

School programs like 1770 Reef Discoveries support off-peak visitation, create economic activity mid-week, and align with Queensland’s Destination 2045 tourism strategy and the 2032 Olympic runway.

“Education-based travel is a gamechanger for our region. By bringing students to 1770, we are not only giving young Queenslanders a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the history and the Great Barrier Reef, we are also strengthening the local economy in a sustainable way,” said Alistair Tavares, GM of Discovery Coast Tourism and Commerce.

Bookings Now Open

1770 Reef Discoveries Education Program runs from March to December and is already attracting strong interest from schools across Queensland. Teachers are encouraged to book early to secure places.

World Journeyman: Somerset Barnard Returns To Agnes Blues, Roots & Rock Fest 2026

Global blues journeyman Somerset Barnard will be returning from his European base for the first time in 6 years to perform his raw and real style of music and showcase a new album at the Agnes Blues, Roots, & Rock Festival in February 2026.

Somerset Barnard’s style is best described as an enticing blend of Delta Blues crossed with the Tex-Mex-Aussieroots of a reckless globetrotter. He was

touring through Australia and the USA before deciding to throw everything away and travel the world.

Somerset can now be found playing anywhere in the world, from the streets of a Senegalese village, to the stage of an International Festival. His musical adventures have even led him to play a part in a Bollywood Movie and work as a Sherpa in the Himalayas.

heart breaking scenes @ SES

Local residents enjoying lunch at the 1770 SES say they were shocked on Tuesday after witnessing Gidarjil Development Corporation representatives disturbing Rainbow Bee-eater nesting sites at the SES grounds. Locals present report sticks and tools used to poke, hammer and stomp around the small burrow entrances that mark active nests. Bird netting was then re-laid across sections of ground, which residents say is used to discourage nesting. The actions were filmed by community members and the footage has been provided to authorities, though locals say past reports have not led to enforcement.

For the past 5 years, Somerset has been based in Vienna, Austria. His first album ‘The Atlas Moth’ released in February 2016 blends a variety of influences from his four years of travelling.

Somerset’s subsequent album ‘Trains & Churches’ was recorded in January 2018 with some of Austria's music greats, including Ernst Molden, Marlene Lacherstorfer und Ivo Thomann, all in analog at the Cselley Mühle in Burgenland, Austria. The band then got together in the same studio in July 2020 to record Somerset’s diverse album 'The Stranger', later to be followed by a book of the same name.

2025 is proving to be an exciting year already for Somerset Barnard, with the upcoming release of his new album 'Contradictions' which has a different sound to his previous studio projects. Rather than screaming to the heavens this time around, ‘Contradictions’ paints a lyrical picture of the idiosyncrasies of human existence, taking you on a journey through the backstreets of Vienna, through India and a night of busking on Brisbane streets.

Get ready for the raw passion and energy of global blues journeyman Somerset Barnard as he lights up the Marquee Stage at #AgnesBluesFest on Sunday morning, 22 February 2026. You’ll be spellbound as he takes you on an epic journey with his mesmerising music and tales of world travel. https:// www.somersetbarnard.com/

For five years, the community have called for the Cultural Connections Immersion Festival to be moved from the SES grounds during peak breeding season— either to another venue

or another time. They say they have documented nest destruction, tampering and the repeated use of netting to deter nesting. On Tuesday, Council attempted to resolve the dispute by offering an alternate venue and a temporary stage. The proposal was rejected, with Gidarjil insisting on the SES.

The timing has intensified community frustration, with this year’s festival set to coincide with World Animal Day. Residents are urging the wider community and visitors not to attend while the event remains on the nesting grounds, warning that a five-year site lease could see more breeding seasons lost unless urgent action protects the bee-eater habitat.

Gladstone Regional Council Statement as of 1 October 2025 sent to The Coastal Rag: Council is continuing to work with Gidarjil Development Corporation (Gidarjil) and Department of the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) on finding a solution for this year’s festival.

Gladstone Regional Council held discussions with Gidarjil and offered to cover the cost of stage hire to facilitate the 1770 Cultural Connections Immersion Festival moving to another location within the Seventeen Seventy SES Grounds or at the Discovery Coast Sport & Recreation Association club. Council supports the festival being held outside of rainbow bee-eater nesting season into the future.

Hydration: The Overlooked Power Switch for Your Brain

Discover why smarter hydration is the secret to sharper brains and healthier ageing in Agnes Water.

When you hear the word executive, what comes to mind? A corner office, leather chair, and board meetings? Let’s flip that. Each of us is the executive of our own health, performance, and longevity. And like any good executive, you need the right tools to run the show. One of the

simplest—yet most neglected—is water. Hydration isn’t just about quenching thirst on a hot day. It’s the hidden “power switch” for your brain and body. Here’s why this matters:

• Your brain is 83–85% water. Lose just 1–2% and your memory, focus, mood, and decision-making all take a dive.

• Water is a bioelectric conductor. Every spark of creativity, every sharp decision, every moment of clarity— you guessed it—needs water.

• Mild dehydration feels like aging. Brain fog, fatigue, poor sleep, slower metabolism. You might just be thirsty, not “getting old.”

Now, here’s the kicker: as we age, our natural sense of thirst declines. That means many people over 45 are walking around in a constant state of low-level dehydration—and don’t even know it. So yes, your 3 p.m. slump may not be your boss, your workload, or even your age. It might just be your body saying, “Please, more water!”

And before you ask—no, coffee and wine don’t count. In fact, they’re more like the office pranksters: fun for a while, but they secretly drain your resources. This isn’t about guzzling litres of tap water. Quality matters. Think spring water, mineral-rich water, or plant-based hydration (fresh fruit and veg). Some experts even highlight “structured water”—water that naturally forms in fruits, vegetables, and certain sources— which your cells absorb more efficiently.

The takeaway? Your brain doesn’t run on caffeine. It runs on clean, bioavailable water. Hydration isn’t optional—it’s strategy. And not just for business leaders—for anyone who wants more energy, sharper thinking, and better health at any age.

So, the next time you feel foggy, flat, or forgetful, don’t rush to blame age, stress, or the economy. Check your glass first.

After all, being the “executive” of your own health means making one small but powerful decision: drink better water.

Crowning Glory: Handmade Headpieces That Speak Without Words

In the heart of regional Queensland, Tanya Anderson is quietly crafting something extraordinary. Her small business, Crowning Glory by Tanya, offers a stunning selection of handmade headpieces designed for race days, weddings, and special occasions — each one a unique statement of style and personality.

Founded in November 2017, Tanya’s journey into millinery began with a spark of curiosity. “I went to a millinery course at the Cobb & Co Museum in Toowoomba for fun and just loved it,” she recalls. “Being an ex-hairdresser, I’ve always loved fashion, so it just made sense to give it a go.”

That spark quickly grew into a passion. Over the years, Tanya has completed numerous millinery courses, mastering techniques in silk abaca, leather, sequin film, sinamay, and feather flowers. Her creations are not only visually striking but also deeply personal — with custommade options and matching earrings available on request.

After relocating in 2022 and taking nearly a year off, Tanya faced the challenge of re-establishing her business in a new community. But her commitment to quality and creativity has earned her a loyal following. “Just having repeat customers and selling my millinery to ladies who really love it — that makes me extremely happy and proud,” she says.

With Melbourne Cup fast approaching, Tanya’s ready-to-wear collection is available now, and custom orders are open for those seeking something truly one-of-a-kind. “Wearing a beautiful

headpiece is like making a statement without saying a word,” she says — a quote that perfectly captures the spirit of her work.

Beyond fashion, Crowning Glory by Tanya adds a touch of elegance to the local business landscape. “I guess it is a benefit having this type of business in a small community,” Tanya reflects. And behind the scenes, her husband David deserves a special mention — not only for his support, but for tolerating the creative chaos that sometimes spills into multiple rooms.

To explore Tanya’s latest designs or place a custom order, visit facebook. com/crowningglorybytanya or follow @ cgbt2025 on Instagram.

Whether you’re dressing for the track or a special celebration, Crowning Glory by Tanya offers more than just headwear — it’s wearable art, made with heart.

Six Keys Cattle Co. Transforms Cattle Education from the Ground Up

Nestled in the heart of our region’s rural landscape, a new kind of classroom is taking shape—one that bellows, breathes, and beckons young minds into the open air. Six Keys Cattle Co., founded by long-time educator and farmer Tammy Grady, is not just a cattle operation—it’s a bold reimagining of how we engage young people in learning, confidence-building, and connection to the land.

Tammy’s vision, forged through decades of working with students across Queensland, is simple yet profound: “Great outcomes for kids.” That mission pulses through every paddock and program at Six Keys, where traditional farming practices meet curriculumaligned learning in a setting that’s as immersive as it is inspiring.

At Six Keys, students don’t just read about agriculture—they live it. Through the “Living, Breathing, Bellowing Classroom,” participants undertake their schoolwork surrounded by cattle, soil, and sunshine. Whether it’s a weekday program aligned with the school curriculum or a weekend session designed for families, every experience is tailored to meet the specific needs of its learners.

Tammy explains, “We’ve hand-reared a special mob of cattle so students can interact with calm, well-handled animals. It’s a lot of extra effort, but it means we can provide a safe, supported, and fully engaging environment.”

This hands-on approach is more than novelty—it’s transformative. Teachers report renewed classroom engagement, parents notice positive shifts in their children, and students leave with stories of confidence and joy.

In a time when screens dominate and attention spans shrink, Six Keys offers something elemental: connection. By blending inquiry-based, play-based, and experiential learning, the programs encourage students to manage animals, explore the land, and tackle real-world challenges. It’s education that sticks— not just in the mind, but in the heart.

Tammy believes this model can be a powerful tool for schools and communities alike. “We’re still in our early days, but the feedback has been incredible. These moments—when a child lights up, when a teacher sees a breakthrough—those are our milestones.”

Six Keys Cattle Co. is more than a farm—it’s a movement toward grounded, meaningful education. With programs expanding and interest growing, Tammy and her team are laying the foundation for

a future where learning is active, joyful, and deeply rooted in community.

Tammy’s final reflection says it best: “We’re here to be a positive influence in the lives of young people. If we can help them grow in confidence and reconnect with the land, then we’ve done something truly worthwhile.”

Surf, Safety, and Support: Flynn’s Lifesaving Spirit

I have recently had the privilege of being invited to be one of the Vice Patrons of the Surf Lifesaving Qld (SLSQ) Wide Bay Capricorn Branch, of which the Agnes Water Surf Lifesaving Club is a member. There are eight affiliated clubs within the Wide Bay Capricorn Branch, three of which are in my Federal Electorate of Flynn – Agnes Water, Tannum Sands and Moore Park Beach. The branch extends from Hervey Bay in the south and right through to Yeppoon.

The Discovery Coast population swells at this time of the year with families and visitors flocking to the area’s waterways, camping spots and National Parks but particularly to our beautiful beaches over the school holidays. SLSQ rescue figures show that our popular beach here at Agnes Water is one of the busiest in the state. Our volunteer SLSC members patrol alongside the lifeguard patrols during peak holiday times, and together they help to keep our local beach safe.

Agnes Water SLSC have recently had their nipper sign-on days and no doubt everyone is looking forward to another successful season ahead and making membership growth a priority for the upcoming 2025/26 season. On a regular beach day, our nippers enjoy their surf-sports to develop fitness, hone their rescue skills and tune into the teamwork of being a lifesaver. Education and training stand at the core of the lifesaving service and during last season, the Agnes Water club had a great season earning 71 Bronze Medallions, 18 Silver Medallions, 62 Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, 87 First Aid Certifications and 69 Surf Rescue Certificates. Well done to everyone achieving these awards.

There are so many volunteers that make the club tick, from trainers, assessors, coaches, club executive, water safety for the nippers, to junior and senior lifesavers and their families. I congratulate the over 230 dedicated members, 119 nippers and 30 active patrolling members of the Agnes Water SLSC. I have the upmost admiration for the commitment demonstrated by everyone who contributes so much to the safety, wellbeing and spirit of our community and I look forward to supporting the club and the branch in the season ahead. The sport gives such a good grounding for nippers and young people to contribute to volunteering in such an important way.

It was great to see the club receive a much-needed boost after receiving $4091 in funds from the 2024-25 Volunteer Grants program. All the best for a successful 25/26 season.

In other good news for the area, the Returned Services League (RSL) Agnes Water/1770 Sub-Branch has successfully applied for a grant under the 2024/25 Veteran Wellbeing Grants program. $23,800.00 was awarded to the sub-branch to set up an outdoor area to the Veteran Support Centre in Miram Vale to provide support, training, counselling, cooking classes, dietitian presentations, and to hold general meetings. I congratulate the sub-branch for the success of their application and commend their vision which will no doubt build community capacity and expand on available services, to support our local veterans in a very tangible way.

Delivering for Queensland: Crisafulli Government Boosts Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail

The Crisafulli Government has delivered a funding boost for Burnett to upgrade the Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail. It will mean a section of the trail will be opened for the first time with the Crisafulli Government committing $147,000 to the project. The funding will cover the resurfacing of seven kilometres from Bundaberg to Sharon Gorge which will ensure a safe, accessible user experience when open, while supporting regional tourism and active transport. The improvements on the Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail will be delivered by Coral Isle Cycling Inc. community group and is scheduled to start in coming months.

Funded through the Department of Transport and Main Road’s Rail Trail Program, the investment will deliver targeted upgrades to:

• Pioneer Valley Rail Trail ($75,000)

• Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail ($1.6 million)

• Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail ($147,000)

• Brisbane Valley Rail Trail ($1.6 million)

These upgrades are part of the Crisafulli Government’s Destination 2045

strategy, which is focused on unlocking Queensland’s ecotourism potential and driving regional development. By enhancing these trails, the Crisafulli Government is helping to grow Queensland’s bike tourism offerings, providing more ways for people to connect with the natural environment.

Destination 2045 marks a turning point after a decade of failure under the former Labor Government, which slashed funding and left regional tourism stuck in neutral. In just 10 months, the Crisafulli Government is back on track - restoring confidence, rebuilding infrastructure, and delivering results. Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said this investment would increase visitation and economic activity in regional areas. “Cycling tourism is growing rapidly, and rail trails play a vital role in supporting the economies of regional towns,” Minister Mickelberg said. “This investment helps revitalise disused infrastructure, connect people with nature, and create new opportunities for communities to grow and prosper. Supporting the development of rail trail experiences in Queensland also contributes to Destination 2045’s ecotourism and regional growth priorities.”

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the investment was great news

for the community. “These rail trails are making use of disused tracks and are playing an increasingly important role in Queensland’s tourism,” Mr Bennett said. “It will bring more visitors to the area and create ecotourism opportunities that showcase everything our beautiful region has to offer.”

Boost for Rural Firies Protecting Queensland Communities

The Crisafulli Government has backed Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) volunteers to keep Queenslanders safe all year round, with the Fire Services Act 1990 being amended to solidify the crucial role Rural Firies play during times of need. By amending the Act, we have provided greater certainty for brigades. The amendment has clarified that they

can undertake activities on their own initiative and recognised that, during fire and other events like floods, brigades can encounter unexpected and urgent incidents that require an immediate response.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said Rural Firies were at the heart of their local community. “Labor’s decade of decline saw Rural Firies neglected, and brigades left without the tools they need to keep Queenslanders safe,” Mr Bennett said. “It’s why the Crisafulli Government delivered historic support for the Rural Fire Service in our first budget and continue to back firies with changes just like this. The amendments will mean that whether it’s during bushfires, floods or cyclones, our Rural Firies can continue to protect Queenslanders with certainty. This week I was honoured to co-host the Parliamentary Friends of Rural Fire Brigades 2025 Yellow Ribbon Day evening – a chance to thank the thousands of men and women of the Queensland Rural Fire Service. A huge shout out must go to all the volunteers, our neighbours, mates and family members, who form the brigades across

the Burnett. From Agnes Water and Avondale, to Childers, Elliott Heads, Woodgate and all brigades in between, thank you for all you do.”

Minister for Fire, Disaster Recovery and Volunteers Ann Leahy said the Crisafulli Government supported Rural Firies at every opportunity. “Rural Firies go above and beyond for Queensland’s communities, and the Crisafulli Government continues to deliver the vital support they need,” Minister Leahy said. “We are empowering Rural Firies with the tools to keep Queenslander’s safe.”

Celebrating Our Region: Stephen Bennett

The Crisafulli Government is backing regional tourism and giving grassroots events the support they deserve. Three of our region’s most iconic events, the Agnes Blues, Roots & Rock Festival, the 1770 Festival, and the Bundaberg Cup, have secured funding under the Crisafulli Government’s Homegrown Destination Events Fund. The Agnes Blues Fest received $25,000, while the 1770 Festival and Bundaberg Cup will each receive $15,000 to help grow attendance, support local jobs, and boost tourism in our community.

These events are part of the fabric of our region. They showcase our history, culture, and lifestyle and draw in thousands of visitors each year. The

Agnes Blues Fest alone delivered over $831,000 into the local economy this year.

Congratulations to all the organisers and volunteers whose passion brings these events to life.

It was a real honour to attend the Agnes Water Marlins Rugby League Club’s Senior Presentation Night, celebrating what’sbeen another fantastic season for the club. With 177 registered players across 11 teams and four home game days, the Marlins continue to grow as a thriving local sporting community. The night was a great opportunity to acknowledge not only the incredible efforts of the players but also the tireless

Bruce Eaton

work of the coaches, support staff, families and dedicated volunteers who make it all possible. Congratulations to all the award winners and thank you to everyone who contributes to making the Marlins such a valued part of our community.

Queensland’s environment is one of our greatest assets and the Crisafulli Government is taking real action to protect it.

Recruitment is now underway for 30 new Indigenous Land and Sea Rangers, delivering on our commitment to increase ranger numbers across the state. These rangers play a vital role in protecting native wildlife, managing fire and invasive species and blending traditional knowledge with modern science to care for our unique landscapes.

After a decade of Labor neglect, which left key ranger positions unfunded, we’re delivering the resources needed to better protect our environment. This is one of the biggest boosts to frontline rangers in Queensland’s history and it’s just the beginning of a fresh start for environmental management across our great state.

In closing, I would like to remind you all that my doors are always open. If I can be of assistance please don’t hesitate to give my office a call on 4111 5100 or email burnett@parliament.qld.gov.au.

Tech Course One of Many Activities Taking Place

During Senior's Month

A five-week Tech and Tea social group for seniors is one of dozens of activities and events on offer within the Gladstone Region during Seniors Month in October. Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the Tech and Tea event will teach seniors how to use computers, smartphones and the internet over a cuppa.

“This friendly informal program is a great chance for seniors to come together, enjoy a cuppa and learn more about using computers, smartphones and navigating the internet,” Mayor Burnett said. “The Tech and Tea sessions will run each Thursday morning beginning from 16 October at Philip Street

Communities and Families Precinct, but spaces are limited so give the Gladstone Neighbourhood Centre a call on 4976 6300 to register your interest.

“This event is proudly delivered by Gladstone Neighbourhood Centre in collaboration with Gladstone Regional Libraries.” Mayor Burnett added that more than 50 Seniors Month events – run by both Council and community groups, businesses and organisations –are taking place from 1-31 October.

“Seniors Month is a fantastic opportunity for anyone aged 55 years or older to connect with each other, learn new skills or brush up on old ones,” he said.

“Council has provided sponsorship for 24 of the Seniors Month activities, as part of an initiative to boost opportunities for connection and growth for seniors across the region.

“In addition to Seniors Month events, the Our Priceless Past exhibition is on display at Gladstone Regional Art Gallery & Museum until Saturday 15 November, so make sure to add that onto your list of things to do across the coming weeks.”

Visit www.gladstone.qld.gov.au/senior for more information and a full list of events on offer during Seniors Month.

Dialing It Up: The Matty Rogers Band To Close Agnes Blues, Roots & Rock Fest 2026

Matty Rogers is getting ready to dial it up and make some serious noise at the Agnes Blues, Roots, & Rock Festival in February 2026 with the full force of his fun-filled, four-piece band and music from the heart.

Northern Rivers based Matty Rogers doesn’t play music so much as he becomes possessed by it; a conduit for the musical muse. He taps into the depths of his heart and weaves it into a dynamic musical experience of Americana blues-rock drenched in soul. Renowned for his authenticity in both songwriting and performance, this passionate singer-songwriter approaches his craft from a place of pure vulnerability, a quality that garners him fans of the diehard variety.

“I want people to feel like they aren’t alone, that someone else is going through the same thing. To fully let go and come out feeling healed and ready to take on the world.” says Matty.

Matty explores themes of love, unity, acceptance, and the raw, real pain of human existence in his lyrics. In his solo formation, this one-man band can make some serious noise. Matty doesn’t go far without his full setup, including a kick, snare, acoustic and lead guitar, topped off with his trademark whisky-soaked vocals.

When things need dialing up, The Matty Rogers Band is the ultimate rocking quartet featuring Jarrah Kurth on drums and backing vox, Corey Pryor on keyboards and backing vox, Lockey Buggy on bass and backing vox, and the man himself on guitar and lead vox. The four-piece is known for their strong chemistry and infectious, fun-filled stage presence. One song into the set and you’ll see why this talented cohort has long been in demand for some of Australia’s biggest stages, including Bluesfest (showcase and Buskers Stage), Falls Festival, Airlie Beach Festival, Mitchell Creek, Blues on Broadbeach and some particularly memorable times at Tamworth Country Music Festival. Get ready for the full force and Festival fun of The Matty Rogers Band as they bring home the #AgnesBluesFest Marquee Stage in spellbinding style from 2.30-4pm on Sunday, 22 February

2026. You won’t be able to resist their infectious grooves and an unforgettable finish to an epic weekend of live music in paradise. https://www.matty-rogers. com/

Green Thumbs Wanted: Entries Open for the 2025 My Home Award

Bundaberg and Burnett locals are encouraged to put their gardens, homes, and green thumbs on show, with entries now open for the 2025 My Home Awards. The competition celebrates the pride, creativity, and dedication of public housing tenants across Queensland who make their homes and gardens shine.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the awards are a wonderful opportunity for public housing tenants to be recognised for the time and care they put into their homes and gardens.

“The My Home Awards are about celebrating everyday Queenslanders who create something special in their own backyards,” Mr Bennett said. “I’d encourage all our public housing tenants, no matter the size of your block or garden, to have a go and put in an entry. These awards recognise not just the end result, but the community spirit, sustainability, and love of the land that goes into it.”

One person who knows the thrill of entering (and winning!) is former award

recipient Joan Jeffery, whose edible garden took out top honours. Joan said her passion for gardening was inspired by her father and a childhood growing up on the land. “I’ve been gardening my whole life. When we were kids, we grew just about everything ourselves, we pretty much only went into town for salt and flour,” Ms Jeffery said. “I love growing my own veggies because I know they’re fresh, they’re not sprayed, and they’re good for you. Right now I’ve got beetroot, choko and lettuce coming up, and I’m about to put in some snake beans. Anyone can do it if you put your mind to it. Start small, just dig a little patch, three foot by three foot, and go from there. If you do it right, you can grow it bigger and bigger,” Ms Jeffery said. "I was really happy to win first prize and I put the prize money straight back into fertilizer for the garden!”

Mr Bennett said Joan’s story showed how rewarding the My Home Awards can be.“ Joan’s passion and knowledge is exactly what these awards are about They’re about people taking pride

in their homes, inspiring others, and strengthening our community spirit,” he said.

Entries for the 2025 My Home Awards are now open. For more details, including how to apply, visit https://www.qld.gov.au/housing/ public-community-housing/publichousing-tenants/during-your-tenancy/ tenantconnect/my-home-awards

Local Favourites Score a Funding Win Under Homegrown Destination Events Fund

The funding announcement hits all the right notes for the Burnett, with three much-loved local events set to benefit from the Crisafulli Government’s revamped Homegrown Destination Events Fund.

The Agnes Blues, Roots & Rock Festival ($25,000), Bundaberg Cup ($15,000), and the 1770 Festival ($15,000) are among 31 events across Queensland to benefit in Round 1 of the program, which will deliver more than $1.5 million statewide in 2026.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett MP said the investment was a big win for local communities and businesses. “These events are part of the fabric of our region. They showcase our history, culture, and lifestyle and draw in thousands of visitors each year,” Mr Bennett said. “With this funding, the Bundaberg Cup, Agnes Blues, Roots & Rock Festival, and 1770 Festival will be able to grow, attract even more visitors, and deliver an even bigger boost to our local economy. This $14 million fund will support events over the next four years,

cementing Queensland as the nation’s events capital. After years of decline under Labor, the Crisafulli Government is backing regional tourism and giving grassroots events the support they deserve. I can’t wait to attend these events next year and a huge congratulations and thank you must go to all the organisers and volunteers who make them possible.”

Discovery Coast Tourism Commerce President Amber Rodgers said the funds will provide a welcome boost allowing them to promote the festivals further afar. “For the Agnes Blues Fest, a portion of the funds is in fact for a Digital Marketing Specialist, which will ensure our festival maximises its reach online - as we all know, being professional and visible on social media and Google are so important to attract today’s consumers,” she said. “The annual Agnes Blues Fest is a genuine positive shot in the arm for our community. The data reflects that February is the quietest month in our visitor economy, and in 2025, this event injected over $831,000 to assist

local businesses. The patrons attending the events are bringing a welcome economic boost to the region with their festival participation, accommodation, dining, retail, services, fuel purchases and so much more.” Ms Rodgers said the Agnes Blues Fest 2026 line up is one not to miss. “The headline performers on Saturday night have been announced, the very well renowned and popular band, DRAGON.Plus another 30 bands will provide an excellent variety of blues, roots and rock music - some for their first-time at Agnes Blues Fest, like Jesse Redwing who will be officially announced very soon, and others like 19-Twenty, 8 Ball Aitken and The Urban Chiefs who are truly 'back by popular demand'.

“Be sure to follow @AgnesBluesFest on socials and check out our website www. agnesbluesandroots.com.au for more music announcements.” Applications for Round 2 of the Homegrown Destination Events Fund are now open. For more information visit Homegrown Destination Events Fund
