This week’s front page brings a bit of festive fun, featuring some cheeky elves causing mischief at the local police station. This tradition has been going on for many years now, and as you’ll see… it looks like they may have finally caught one of them in the act! Phew!

As always, this issue is a reminder of just how lucky we are to live here. There really are some beautiful people in this community who make the Discovery Coast such a pleasure to call home. Inside, we celebrate local legends, share heaps of creativity, and enjoy plenty of school antics that are guaranteed to raise a smile.

As we head into Christmas and the New Year, don’t forget to look after yourselves in the summer heat — be sun safe, stay hydrated, and protect yourself from those pesky midges. Speaking from experience… I’ve learnt that lesson the hard way this week and am currently sporting legs that look like a dot-to-dot picture!

A Small-Scale Tribute to 1770 Diorama of the 1770 LARC installed in Lighthouse

A

beautifully detailed diorama depicting Dr Daniel Solander, the iconic 1770 LARC! Tours — and the scenic track from Jenny Lind Creek to the Bustard Head Lighthouse — has been officially donated to the Bustard Head Lighthouse Association and is now on display within the lighthouse precinct.

“I’ve always enjoyed building model kits and dioramas,” David said. “After several visits to the lighthouse on LARC tours, my partner and I came to truly appreciate the logistical support that 1770 Environmental Tours has provided over many decades — continuing the legacy established by Des and Betty Mergard.

David is quick to acknowledge the support he received along the way, thanking his partner Ann-Marie Pratley for her patience during months spent in the shed, as well as Mark and Lorna from the Bustard Head Lighthouse Association, Premier Awards for the display case, Frontline Hobbies in Newcastle for advice and materials, and Boulder Creek Railroad for invaluable online tutorials.

The meticulously crafted model, built to a 1:35 scale, was conceived and constructed by local model builder David Maertin as a tribute to the decades-long support provided by 1770 Environmental Tours in the restoration, operation, and ongoing survival of the Bustard Head Lighthouse, Museum and Lightkeepers Cottage.

Drawing on hundreds of reference images taken between 2015 and 2025, the diorama faithfully recreates both the rugged coastal landscape and the distinctive LARC vehicle that has become synonymous with the journey to Bustard Head. From the track’s contours to the surrounding vegetation — including hand-crafted pandanus palms — the attention to detail reflects months of dedication and craftsmanship.

The completed diorama is mounted on a purpose-built wooden stand and includes a dedication plaque acknowledging the contribution of those involved. It has been installed on the ground level of the Bustard Head Lighthouse, where it now fills a notable gap in the museum’s storytelling — visually capturing the vital role of the LARC in transporting people, equipment and supplies to the remote site.

The model was delivered to the lighthouse precinct fittingly aboard the freight-only LARC Shirley Buchanan, skippered by Neil Mergard, owner of 1770 Environmental Tours. An informal dedication and handover took place on Thursday 11 December 2025, with the diorama formally accepted by Stuart Buchanan, Chairman of the Bustard Head Lighthouse Association.

For David, the project was driven by a desire to recognise a contribution he felt had gone largely unseen within the museum’s physical displays.

The finished diorama now serves as a powerful visual link between the lighthouse and the LARC journeys that make access possible. Tour guides are able to use it as a storytelling tool, helping visitors connect the physical journey they’ve just experienced with the decades of dedication behind the preservation of this unique maritime site.

That support simply isn’t something the lighthouse could have survived without.”

The LARC’s ability to move heavy equipment, materials and people across difficult terrain has been critical to maintaining the precinct. Equally important has been its passenger-carrying role, allowing visitors from across Australia and overseas to experience the site firsthand — helping to build awareness, appreciation, and ongoing support.

Creating the diorama came with its challenges. Finding suitable reference images of the track from Jenny Lind Creek proved difficult, and David also had to design the piece without knowing where — or if — it would ultimately be displayed.

To preserve the surprise, neither the Bustard Head Lighthouse Association nor 1770 Environmental Tours were aware of the project until it was near completion.

Key milestones along the way included a pivotal suggestion from a close friend — Ange Kallas — that the museum itself was the only logical home for the piece. Gaining the endorsement of key Association members was another important step, culminating in final approval from Stuart Buchanan.

From concept to completion, the project involved approximately six days of design work and seven months of construction — a labour of love that now stands as an independent salute to Des and Neil Mergard, Stuart Buchanan, and all those who have worked tirelessly to ensure the Bustard Head Lighthouse remains standing, accessible, and celebrated.

Visitors to the lighthouse can now see this remarkable diorama in situ — a small-scale reminder of a big journey, and the people who made it possible.

What better place to celebrate Christmas than in Agnes Water!

T

hree years ago, a small group of people from the Christian communities of Agnes Water came together to bring a bit more sparkle to Christmas. In 2023 we hosted our very first Agnes Water Community Christmas Carols event at Tom Jeffrey Park. Our humble beginnings saw a free sausage sizzle, carols band, and a visit from Santa on the back of a ute, all while watching the sun go down over beautiful Main Beach. It was a stunning evening! 2024 saw our event grow even bigger as we moved to the 1770 Getaway gardens. Celebrating with our community under the palm trees while the kids jumped on the free jumping castles and got their faces painted was a night to remember. This year we still wanted to keep the same Aggie flavour but provide a space for more of our community to attend.

On Sunday the 7th of December we hosted our 2025 Agnes Water Christmas Carols at Discovery Christian College. Around a thousand people attended the night and the atmosphere was electric! Many of our local food trucks lined the undercover basketball courts and they were still serving delicious food well into the night. Our volunteers were kept busy serving 50kg of Foodworks finest sausages to our community for free, and all with a smile on their faces.

There was no shortage of fun to be had on the jumping castles, proudly supported by Councillor Simon McClintock’s Gladstone Regional Council’s Councillor Discretionary Fund. Not only did our local councillor donate funds but co-MCed the event brilliantly as well! Free facepainting and photobooth also helped to add to the Christmassy joy!

Throughout the night we heard from our local school choirs, were amazed by the dance performances

by Discovery Christian College and Discovery Coast Dance School and joined in the carols singalong with our talented carols band.

We were not only blown away by the time and energy invested into the event by the volunteers from our region’s churches and college, but also by over $1600 worth of lucky draw prizes donated by our generous local businesses – what a community we live in! But we saved the best for last. From the beginning of this year’s planning, we had a vision of bringing fireworks to Agnes Water at Christmas time. Through the remarkable donation from Discovery Christian College, we

ended the night with a bang!

We were able to put together 37 hampers for families in need through our Reverse Santa initiative. These hampers were filled with food items donated on the night and at our local supermarkets, and with money from the opshop.

Thank you to everyone that attended. We pray you have a safe and peace-filled Christmas – you are loved!

he students at Agnes Water State School are so fortunate to learn Indonesian every week, right from when they start Prep. Did you know that the benefits of learning a second language include improved memory, sharper cognitive function, and increased problem solving abilities? There is one other major benefit that our students feel regularly – and that is the understanding that learning languages is FUN! Our wonderful Indonesian teacher, Mrs Peta Swan (Ibu Swan as we call her), fosters enthusiasm for learning through her creative and real-life applications of Indonesian, bringing the beautiful world of Indonesia into our classrooms.

Ibu Swan has spent many years building and strengthening Mrs Tankey connections with our sister school, Sekolah Inpres Lasiana Agnes Water State School in Kupang. Ibu Swan encourages this authentic link between the students of Agnes Water and Kupang through shared art pieces, exchanging letters and participation in global competitions.

Year 5 and 6 students recently competed in the Cairns Language Speaking competition for Indonesian. They completed both a written and spoken part of the entry where they responded to questions about themselves in Indonesian for the competition.

He’s Here To Help Paul ‘Whitey’ White, one of The Discovery Coast’s many volunteers

He’s also a single dad, raising his young daughter.

Phew, he is busy – hang on, he also works as a tour guide on the LARC.

e came to Agnes more than 20 years ago and Whitey, as he is affectionately known, has been working and lending a helping hand on The Discovery Coast ever since.

“It’s who I am,’’ Whitey said. “You have to be who you are to be happy.”

Our own Grom, originally from up Emu Park way as well, Wayne ‘Grom’ Mellick, knew Whitey from Emu Park and asked him if he’d like to come down and help run the Surf School out of Grom’s new shop he was opening, Reef2Beach.

It fitted like a glove, or wetshirt, and Whitey also helped Grom out with the then Reef2Beach Longboard Classic for a number of years, before Grom handed it over as Paul took on the presidency of Tide N Turn Boardriders Club.

“Helping people gives you such a good feelin’. I just love what I’m doin’, and it makes me feel good seeing others gettin’ a bit of help when they need it.”

His dad got the job as publican at the Pine Beach Hotel, Emu Park on the beach east of Rockhampton and young Paul got into all sorts of sports but was bitten by the surfing bug.

And surfing just about took over his life and eventually landed him in Agnes.

“I was runnin’ around, surfing, working to try and make as much money as I could to live, but I wasn’t really, happy.

And Paul is pretty busy doing what he loves; a long-time member of the Agnes Water Rural Fire Brigade, contest director of the annual Agnes Water Longboard Classic, a Peer Support Officer (PSO) in the Fire and Emergency Services Support Network (FSSN) and a support worker for the NDIS.

Paul was born on the Gold Coast and spent most of his first decade at Southport doing what most young coast kids did.

WHITEY: Paul 'Whitey' White has been volunteering and working in the Discovery Coast community for decades.

Whitey has been running and growing the contest ever since and Grom and Reef2Beach are still one of the main sponsors. Paul lasted for about 10 years as Tide N Turn president, but handed that over to the new crew, but retained the Classic organization with a band of willing workers when they formed CWATAR Inc, specifically to organize and run the contest and support the local surfing community. Tide N Turn too has flourished, most recently under current

committee and president Angus ‘Gus’ Darling.

Coming up to its 26th anniversary in 2026, the Agnes Water Longboard Classic is an important contest on the surfing calendar, run in March every year the week after the world-famous Noosa Festival Of Surfing.

Many of the big-name surfers make the pilgrimage north each year from Noosa to Agnes, for a more laid-back, regional style competition.

Entries are now open for the 2026 Agnes Water Longboard Classic and entries can be completed on the CWATAR Inc website, cwatarinc.com.au And yep, if you want to know more on the contest, or what’s going on generally, on The Discovery Coast, Whitey’s your man.

Christmas Lights Light up the Town

e’re excited to share that the Agnes Water Christmas Lights Display Map in addition to the competition is also live for the 2025 festive season!

Registrations for the competition are rolling in, and our interactive map is beginning to sparkle with Christmas cheer. This community project showcases both competition entries and other local displays, helping families explore the best festive lights across Agnes Water and 1770.

Electric Vehicle Charging Station ‘Cenotaph Carpark’, within the road reserve in the corner of Agnes Street and Springs Road, Agnes Water Construction is scheduled to commence on or around 15 December 2025, with the installation expected to be substantially complete by 24 December 2025. The site will remain fenced off until early 2026 while awaiting energisation by Ergon.

Carpark Impact 15–24 December 2025: Approximately four (4) parking bays will be fenced off to safely undertake works in accordance with the approved design and executed licence.

25 December 2025 – end of January 2026: Temporary fencing will remain around the works area only. This will be positioned close to the charger locations, allowing patrons to access the majority of parking

bays. During this period, only two (2) parking bays are expected to be unavailable.

Traffic Management There will be no impact on traffic flow during the works.

Noise or Operational Impacts All works will be undertaken during standard daylight business hours in line with construction industry requirements. Should works outside these hours be required, NRMA/BMM Group will communicate directly with relevant tenants.

Signage Construction signage and fencing wrap will be installed for the duration of the works. Public access to the new chargers will not be permitted until the site formally opens in early 2026.

Truth & Transparency, Finally!

The Crisafulli Government has finalised the masterplan for the Bundaberg Hospital providing more beds, more services and better access to healthcare for the Bundaberg and Burnett community.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said the project marked a major step forward for local healthcare after years of uncertainty. “This is a genuine step forward for healthcare in Bundaberg and the Burnett,” Mr Bennett said. “This is a funded, deliverable plan that focuses on real services for patients and clinicians - not promises that were never going to be met. Stage 1 alone will significantly improve healthcare access for the region and includes more than 200 beds and bed alternatives, a bigger Emergency Department, new maternity services,

Mr Bennett said the decision to reset the project followed an independent review of the previous government’s plan.

“My job is to be an honest advocate for the people of Bundaberg and the Burnett - not to sell false hope, but to fight for outcomes that can actually be delivered,” he said “I was genuinely gutted when I saw the plan Labor handed over in November 2024 An independent r e v i e w found it was unrealistic, unfunded and undeliverable.

ocal MP’s Stephen Bennett and David Batt are making a final festive-season push for locals to shop, taste, create and explore Local First to support the small businesses, producers, and operators that keep the region thriving.

Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett said Christmas is the perfect time to celebrate and support the region’s local products, flavours and experiences.

“Whether it’s a hamper of local produce, a gift made by a local artisan, or a Bundy or Burnett grown experience, every local choice strengthens our community,” Mr Bennett said. “Our growers, makers, tourism operators and small businesses support us all year, and now is our chance to give that support back. When it’s time to start planning the Christmas Day menu, be sure to buy local produce and keep our paddock-to-plate economy alive.”

The Wide Bay is home to more than 23,600 small businesses, a huge 97.4% of all businesses in the region, with the largest share in agriculture, construction, retail, transport, and local services.

Federal Member for Hinkler David Batt said small businesses, primary producers and local experiences all play a vital role in keeping regional jobs strong.

“From farm gates to food markets, boutique shops to tours and attractions, our region is full of world-class local experiences,” Mr Batt said.

“The Christmas period is one of the most important trading times of the year for many local operators. Choosing a local tour, local seafood, local fruit and veg, or a local dining experience has a massive impact. The strong community response to the Local First campaign has already shown just how proud people are to support local businesses, producers and experiences across the Wide Bay, and it’s been fantastic to see locals getting behind their own."

I

would like to urge everyone across our region to be extra vigilant on the roads now that school holidays are underway. It’s critical for motorists to be careful due to the high volume of people travelling over the Christmas holiday period. The best holidays are those where everyone stays safe and well, and that means taking road safety seriously at all times. According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation, every year, more than 1,200 lives are tragically lost on Australian roads.

This statistic is shockingly high and sadly continues to rise.

Everyone can play their part to keep themselves and those around them safe on our roads, such as planning ahead, taking their time, sharing the driving, stopping to rest and recover, and remaining aware of the conditions.

The Queensland Government’s website has a list of resources to assist Queenslanders for holiday travel.

High Octane Wild Ride With Horse Drawn Cadillac

et ready to giddy up on a wild ride with Horse Drawn Cadillac when they burn up the Agnes Blues, Roots & Rock Festival main Marquee Stage for the first time next February. They’ll be joining a sizzling summer line-up turning it up to ELEVEN, headlined by Antipodean legends Dragon.

Mixing an ever-evolving batch of homegrown originals with a few rare hidden gems from deep within the vault of musical treasures, Horse Drawn Cadillac makes you feel like you’re on a wayward journey to New Orleans via Chicago. Their breath-stealing shows are a bump and roll ride with some high octane horses.

In full flight, their 9-piece band is powered by a trio of soulful and gritty singers – Amanda Bartley (Midnight Feast), Tegan Portener (Casuarina Light Phenomenon) and Pearl Noire (several outfits!) – driven by players with a Cadillac-full of festival experience, both prior to and including Horse Drawn Cadillac.

Sport and Rec - Farewell to 2025!

W

hat a year! While we have been looking to the future and quietly working on a Strategic Plan this past year, our small team of hard working volunteers have also kept the grounds looking great and the facilities ready for community use.

We have installed two pet waste bag dispensers. Thank you to all the thoughtful pet owners who are helping to keep our playing fields clean and safe while enjoying a walk with their furry friends.

The great collaboration with Marlins and Little A’s has produced a rejuvenated playing surface, getting ready for their 2026 seasons. Volunteers from the three groups worked enthusiastically together to prepare the field and then take their turn on the watering roster. The generous financial support of Bendigo Bank, along with the resources and time and experience provided by local businesses has seen significant improvement and the field is very close to being open again. It will be very much appreciated in 2026.

We had some mixed success with our social gatherings this year – some rain affected, a lot of fun, some open mic …. always a great opportunity to connect with community in a relaxed, friendly setting and there will be more next year We have welcomed new activities this year. In particular, the Flying Arrows have developed their archery range and they welcome visitors on Sunday mornings The social netball has stepped up a notch and there is a very enthusiastic group

now in training with the view to forming a club with teams that will compete in the Bundy competition next year.

2026 promises to be busy!

Whether it is a regular sporting activity or simply access to the beautiful grounds, there is always something to do at your Sport and Rec. We are making plans for some new events …. more details in the New Year.

gnes Water Police Station has had some unexpected visitors AGAIN this festive season, with not one but two mischievous elves causing a stir around the office. From popping up in unlikely places to getting up to cheeky antics after hours, the festive duo have kept officers on their toes and staff laughing.

The elves’ daily appearances have become a fun talking point, bringing some Christmas cheer to the station and the wider community through shared photos and smiles. While no serious crimes were committed (that we know of ), the elves have certainly been guilty of spreading festive mischief.
