SOLANA 1770-AGNES WATER

Hello! My name is Renee Moore and I’m the Sales Consultant for Solana 1770-Agnes Water. I moved to Agnes Water 3.5 years ago and have come to love the relaxed lifestyle, magnificent beaches and genuine down to earth beautiful people I’ve met. If you’re into surfing, SUP’s, swimming, boating, fishing and exploring the outdoors, it is all here and there are many beautiful coastal & bush walks and bike tracks to explore. The 1770 golf course and driving range is beautiful and there are many varied activities here; Sculpt fitness classes and trainers, Zumba, Agnes aqua & fitness, tennis, pickleball and park run to name a few. The weekend markets are great and continually growing and an afternoon watching the sun go down on 1770 sunset cruises is a must.

I was introduced to Solana Lifestyle Resorts through Solana Bribie Island initially, which has been highly successful and is now fully sold with residents living happily in the Solana community. I was excited to begin this project here in 1770-Agnes Water after seeing Bribie fully established, and whilst we have had many challenges due to weather – stage one is almost sold out with only few remaining homes available. The Livewell Centre construction is moving ahead, and a new stage release will be announced shortly.

My role as a Sales Consultant for Solana is to provide information regarding the area, homes, resort, and lifestyle. I thoroughly enjoy talking with & meeting people … ultimately, it’s up to the individual to decide whether Resort-style living with Solana 1770-Agnes Water is for them. Solana may be ideal for anyone wanting to downsize within a lovely community, without having to maintain large homes or acreage, freeing up time to simply enjoy life. Many that join Solana Resort living are wanting to travel but still enjoy a beautiful home base and lifestyle with all the resort facilities and community when they return.

Feel free to come check out the resort and I look forward to meeting you!

ONLY FOUR HOMES REMAIN.

We may have dodged Cyclone Alfred, but our thoughts are with those down south who faced its impact. Queenslanders are resilient, and we know this won’t be the last challenge we 'weather' together. Be sure to check out Jen Chalmer's article on past close calls, accompanied by some recent photos from local Michele Wartberg.

I’m thrilled to bring you this issue and deeply grateful for all your feedback and wonderful submissions. This journey has been an incredible learning experience, and I’m so proud to continue discovering more about our amazing community through this paper.

I had the absolute pleasure of attending the International Women’s Day event at the Agnes Water Tavern, and what a day it was! It was astounding to see so many new faces—a true testament to how quickly our

region is growing. Spending the day surrounded by incredible women, celebrating their achievements, and fundraising for our local wildlife carer and free little pantry was nothing short of inspiring. I can’t wait to do it all again next year!

There’s so much happening in the coming weeks and months—stay tuned and let’s celebrate everything that makes our community so special and the people, groups, businesses and organisations that make it all happen.

Unity and Diversity: International Women’s Day Festivities in Agnes Water

An eclectic crowd of women, and one gentleman, came together on International Women’s Day, Saturday 8 March, at the Agnes Water Tavern. The event raised $2,350 to support Yvonne Thompson a local wildlife carer and Margaret Lloyd from Little Free Community Pantry - Agnes Water.

Guests had the opportunity to get to know someone new at the event by participating in the Rainbow Dance Card Activity. Guest speakers Pat McMinn from Gladstone Women’s Health and Roberta McInturff from Rapid Transformational Therapy shared valuable insights, giving attendees the chance to learn something new

A highlight of the event was the Fashion Parade provided by Stacey Picton and the team from Saltbush 1770. Our local models bravely strutted their stuff on the runway to the applause of the crowd.

The event not only brought Discovery Coast women together to enjoy an enriching day filled with engaging activities and a vibrant atmosphere but also aimed to raise much-needed funds to support Yvonne and Margaret in their tireless community work. The support from both donors and ticket purchasers was beyond expectations.

“I feel that we well and truly achieved the objectives of the event,” organiser Annie Backhaus of BizXpress told The Coastal Rag. “It is through these events that we realise our similarities, celebrate our differences, and support each other. The support for Yvonne and Margaret was overwhelming, and I was so glad Yvonne could make it to the event and help with the prize draw. I thank the enormous

contributions made by Sally and Jack of The Agnes Water Tavern, Stacey and her team from Saltbush 1770, the staff at Gladstone Women’s Health, Roberta, Belle from Izabelle Koepke Photography, and the volunteers on the day – Tash, Tanya, Emma, Prue, Renee, Lydia, Pat, and Olga. Without their continued support, encouragement, and help on the day, the event may never have gone ahead!”

The popularity of this local event was demonstrated by tickets selling out two weeks prior to the event, despite the instability of Cyclone Alfred and the hot weather.

The local businesses that supported this event with $4,800 in Prize Draw donations and Lucky Door Prizes were:

- Ocean Ridge Property

- Graze Me 1770

- 1770 Reef

- Sculpt Agnes Water

- Ubuntu Gallery

- Ivy Lines

- Agnes Water Auto Repairs

- Crowning Glory

- Lightly Centred

- Glass Roots

- JC Beauty

- Saltbush 1770

- Watermark Hair

- Coco Dama 1770 Agnes Water

- No Pong

- 1770 Art Show Inc

- Zumba Agnes Water

- BizXpress

- Koffee & Chocolate (1770 Chocolate Company)

- The artisans and makers at Make Mend Co-operative – Agnes Water

“I look forward to handing the event over to another business, individual or community group, if there is anyone that would like the experience of organising the event,” Annie said. “This allows others to put their spin on it and I am happy to help and pass on what I have learned - or I will take on board the feedback from guests and make the event bigger and better next year!”

If you are interested in hosting the event or contributing to it in 2026, please feel free to contact Annie Backhaus, BizXpress, at 0400 737 666 or annie@bizxpress.com.au

How lucky we were in avoiding Cyclone Alfred!

I do feel that we live in a lucky part of the state. I have lived here for over 38 years and have never encountered any damage from cyclones (try saying that to insurance companies, who want to increase our premium every year!).

Cyclone Fran crossed right over Agnes Water/Seventeen Seventy on 15 March 1992, having weakened considerably after wreaking havoc in Vanuatu. The Bundaberg district sustained heavy crop losses after ex-Cyclone Fran became a rain depression.

I felt anxious when Cyclone Marcia formed in the Coral Sea and was predicted to cross the coast here in February 2015. My Husband Ken Chalmers had a full knee replacement two weeks prior and was helping, while on crutches, to clean up our yard! The tropical low reached cyclone intensity on 18 February, moving in a southwesterly track, and underwent a period of extremely rapid intensification on 19 February, increasing by two categories to a Category 4 severe tropical cyclone in approximately 12 hours. This increase in intensity is well above the average rate of intensification for tropical cyclones anywhere in the world. Late on that same day, Marcia made a sharp turn towards the south and intensified even further. It was

estimated to have reached Category 5 intensity at 4 am on Friday, 20 February. Marcia crossed the coast at Shoalwater Bay that morning, causing significant damage to Yeppoon and Rockhampton. The ex-cyclone caused more damage as it went inland through Calliope and Biloela. We didn’t get any rain or even a puff of wind here.

In January 1968, while staying in our Agnes Water shack for the school holidays, a cyclone came through, causing much beach erosion and flooding. All the holidaymakers were unable to return to their homes, and we were running low on food, as were the Jeffery family (owners of the property ‘Agnes Water’). There were no shops here in those days; we had to bring all our food with us. Arrangements were made for a plane to drop our pre-ordered parcels of food onto the Agnes Water beach. The parcels were wrapped in newspaper and dropped from the plane at quite a considerable height. They burst open, and much to our dismay, dogs rushed in, grabbing the sausages and ran down the beach with strings of sausages trailing behind them!

We had many incidents of getting caught at flooded creeks in those days of dirt roads and had to wait patiently

in our cars until the water subsided enough to cross.

Where are they now? Ella Campbell

In 2015 Ella Campbell featured in The Coastal Rag for Agnes Water/1770 Little Athletics. Now 10 years later Ella is in her final year of Little A’s.

Ella is an accomplished athlete and has attended Regional Competitions over the years, qualifying for the McDonalds State Championships. Sprints are still her favourite event.

Ella is a great role model; she takes the children through their warm-up procedure and willingly helps the younger athletes with their technique. Ella happily offers to help the parents with measuring and recording.

Ella’s whole family have been a big part of ensuring Little Athletics continues to thrive each year. After completing his time at Little Athletics, Ella’s older brother Haden has come along to the Saturday meets to offer

help and encouragement to the athletes with their technique and he is very much respected by them and the parents. Ella’s Mum Jen has been Secretary at various times over the years and she also helps the athletes with their technique. Her dad Dave does the important job of “starter” for the track events. Ella’s younger brother Logan is also a proficient athlete and respectful role model for his peers.

The 2025 season has kicked off early and is off to a great start with many athletes already registered. Anyone wanting to register their children are always welcome to come down to the Discovery Coast Sport & Recreation grounds on Saturday morning and talk to the committee. You can register your children via the Facebook page.

Meet the Eurimbula Rural Fire Brigade Volunteers

Get to know our members: Sharon Morris

Current position: Second Officer, Treasurer, Volunteer Community Educator

When did you join the Rural Fire Service (RFS)? I joined in 2013, 12 years ago, with Captain Creek Rural Fire Brigade, now known as Eurimbula Rural Fire Brigade.

Why did you join? I joined the RFS to help others and support our community in times of need, along with learning how to protect my own property from fire.

What’s your day job? Business Owner

Who is in your family? Husband Jason, seven children, and eight grandchildren.

What do you love most about being a firefighter? As a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Volunteer, the care and assistance we offer each other make us feel like one big family, united in our efforts.

Initially, I joined as support, believing that, as a female, I couldn’t participate in fire responses. However, after a few months of encouragement and support from the brigade, I went out on my first fire call—and I’ve never looked back. My experience

has taught me that being female is no barrier to getting out there and making a difference.

What was the most memorable fire for you? 2018’s Deepwater and Captain Creek fires were among the most intense I’ve ever been involved in. I distinctly remember being about half a kilometre away from one fire when, suddenly, a blaze started behind us due to the extreme heat originating in the bush just behind us. It was incredible to witness how the fire reacted, creating its own weather patterns around us. Fortunately, we had a large plane fly overhead a few times, dropping water to help suppress the flames. Seeing the fire spread through the treetops and hearing the roar of the flames is an experience I’ll never forget.

More recently, I had the opportunity to hold the Acting 1st Officer role during the Gwynne Range fire. It was a great experience that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I learned many new skills from fellow First Officers at nearby brigades.

Anything else you’d like to say? For me, being part of the Rural Fire Department has been an incredible learning experience. It’s not just about fighting fires—it’s about gaining valuable knowledge in areas like storms, floods, cyclones, and much more. The Rural Fire Department is an

all-emergency service, which makes every day unique and rewarding. One of the greatest aspects of this role is the friendships you form, not only within your own brigade but also across the local area, state, and Australia-wide. I’ve had the privilege of meeting some amazing people who I know I can always rely on.

Over my 12 years with the department, I’ve had the opportunity to take on various roles, including Acting First Officer for five months, Second Officer, Secretary, Treasurer, Chairperson, Volunteer Community Educator, and Training Officer.

If you’re thinking about joining, come down to one of our meetings and have a chat, or feel free to call our First Officer Jason on 0423 464 037. —no pressure at all! We’d love to hear from you.

Chris Cameron is a Gladstone Regional Council Councillor once again following a Declaration of Office that took place 17 March 2025. He replaces former Councillor, Kahn Goodluck, who resigned from his position effective 13 March due to personal reasons after informing Gladstone Regional Council of this decision in January.

Cr Cameron first served the region as a Councillor from 2020 to 2024 and narrowly missed out reelection in the 2024 Local Government Election, finishing as runner up (ninth position) by 15 votes as declared by Electoral Commission Queensland.

Gladstone Region Mayor Matt Burnett said the community is fortunate to have

someone with Cr Cameron’s experience return to the boardroom. “Chris brought extensive work and life experience to Gladstone Regional Council during his first term and provided plenty of valuable input around the Councillor table,” Mayor Burnett said. “I look forward to working alongside Chris again during the next three years as the entire Councillor group proudly plays its part in delivering positive outcomes for the Gladstone Region.

“I want to thank Kahn once again on his past nine years of service to the Gladstone Region. It has been an honour to work alongside him and wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Stephen Bennett’s Column

As we welcome a new month, I have some exciting updates to share with our community.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the Agnes Water Baptist Church on the recent opening of the Agnes Water Op Shop. Initiatives like this, which focus on community well-being, don’t come to life without the dedication and hard work of generous individuals. The opening of the Agnes Water Op Shop is a reflection of the community’s strong spirit, demonstrating a commitment to helping one another. This new venture will surely be a valuable resource for those in our community who find themselves facing difficult times. The Op Shop is located at 200 Bicentennial Dr, Agnes Water QLD 4677 and is open Tuesday - Saturday from 9am – 1pm.

A Parliamentary Enquiry has been launched to examine the current

state and operation of the Container Refund Scheme, it’s efficiency and effectiveness in delivering on its legislative objectives. The inquiry aims to boost recycling rates and put more funds in Queenslanders’ pockets. The scheme, administered by Container Exchange, has a legislated target return rate of 85%, however the return rate has fallen short of that target. I encourage you all to take advantage of the Container Refund Scheme, it is a great way for you to help protect the environment and to earn some change. For those not already aware, there is a Container for Change recycling depot located at 19 Corfield Dr, Agnes Water QLD 4677.

I would also like to share an update from Parliament. We recently passed the Queensland Productivity Commission 2024 Bill, aimed at reducing unnecessary red tape and restoring productivity, improving

living standards and driving economic growth. The Productivity Commission will research solutions for economic challenges facing Queensland and will provide advice on how to address those issues. The first order of business is to undertake a comprehensive review of Queensland’s construction sector in the wake of revelations Best Practice Industry Conditions were adding up to 25 percent to the cost of major projects.

In closing, I would like to remind you all that my doors are always open. If I can be of assistance please don’t hesitate to give my office a call on 4111 5100 or email burnett@parliament. qld.gov.au.

Stephen Bennett Member for Burnett

Building a Stronger Regional Australia

Did you know regional Australia produces over 30 per cent of the national economic output? The Coalition understands that rural and regional Australia provide the bulk of our exports and make a vast economic contribution to Australia’s wealth and living standards. We believe that our regions deserve a government that represents them, understands them, and invests in them.

Without our regions, Australia would be unrecognisable. A failure to invest in and enhance the drivers of our regional economies will significantly cost Australia’s future growth and prosperity.

We believe that all Australians deserve excellent fundamental service delivery, and that health and education in our regions should be of the highest standard.

We know that there will always be differences between life in the bush versus life in the city, but that a fundamental role of government is to ensure high quality essential services and support, regardless of postcode.

Regional Australia will be well represented across a Coalition Government, with senior ministers from rural and regional Australia in Cabinet and the Ministry.

We will have a strong regional perspective on all decision making and

always look for opportunities to ensure equity and fairness.

We will address critical gaps in access to essential services. Regional communities contribute significantly to our national economic and social fabric and deserve quality local services.

A Coalition Government will:

- Invest in roads, rail and local infrastructure for communities and economic production.

- Fund enabling infrastructure to unlock new housing in regional and rural Australia, such as water, sewerage, and access roads.

- Protect jobs and businesses in traditional local industries that are under threat from Labor and the Greens.

- Ensure government regulation is balanced and genuine, not used for activist causes or to obstruct our regional industries.

- Protect prime agricultural land from destruction by ideological projects.

- Develop and support access to export markets and trade opportunities to advance regional businesses.

- Improve access to telecommunications and high-speed internet.

- Invest in practical local water infrastructure projects to support agriculture, industry, and economic development.

- Deliver essential services that are of high quality, regardless of geography.

- Work with local industries to address chronic regional workforce shortages.

- Support regional health worker attraction, recruitment, and retention initiatives.

- Back local solutions to provide better access to flexible childcare and education services for families living in regional, rural, and remote communities.

Lighthouse Tower Opening Anniversary

Twelve years ago this month, the community of Agnes Water and 1770 were invited to look inside the Bustard Head Lighthouse tower for the very first time. There is no doubt that lighthouses all over the world are full of intrigue, and our closest shining light is no exception.

With its original cast-iron staircase inside the tower, winding up over 50 steps to the balcony, the Bustard Head tower delivers on intrigue, as well as offering absolutely breathtaking views, true craftsmanship, and incredible tales from its 157 years of operating as a warning signal.

The momentous ‘Opening of the Lighthouse Tower’ was celebrated in March 2013 with a special event at the Lightstation during the day, followed by a concert at the Agnes Water Community Centre in the evening. The talented Bundaberg musicians Quatro performed at both events and wowed the crowd when they played from the Lightstation balcony.

Being Queensland’s only operating lighthouse that permits access inside is a phenomenal achievement for our destination. Along with being the closest access point to the outer Great Barrier Reef for day tours and the last surf beach as visitors travel north, we certainly have a great number of significant treasures on our doorstep in this special part of the world.
