HELPFUL TIPS ON YOUR SET UP

Proper posture is a crucial step before swinging at the ball. Maintaining good posture results in improved swings and better results.

Here are four steps to help you achieve good posture and setup:

Stand upright with your legs straight

Tilt forward from your hips, and keep your back straight

Bend your knees slightly so your weight rests on the balls of your feet

Let your arms and club hang, and swing the club!

RACQUETS TIP

MASTERING THE LOB: WHEN TO USE IT FOR MAXIMUM EFFECTIVENESS

The lob is often regarded as a strategic weapon in tennis, especially when your opponent is positioned near the net, ready to aggressively volley. For many players, the lob is the first instinctive shot to play in this situation Some professionals even argue that the lob is one of the most underused shots in the game However, at the club level, the opposite can be true: it’s often overutilized. To truly make the lob an effective tool in your game, it’s important to understand when and how to use it. Here are some of the best scenarios in which the lob is not only a good choice, but the best choice:

On the Return of Serve in Doubles

In doubles, the server’s partner typically positions themselves at the net, anticipating the opportunity to intercept and finish the return with a strong volley. This positioning makes them vulnerable to a well-executed lob The lob, in this case, is an ideal response—by hitting over the net player, you can completely bypass them and potentially force your opponents into a defensive position.

However, timing and precision are key here. If the server delivers a strong, well-placed serve, controlling the lob may become challenging. A lob against a powerful serve requires not just the right trajectory but also the right touch to ensure it clears the net player and lands deep enough to prevent a successful overhead If the lob is too short or off-target, the net player will have an easy opportunity to pounce and finish the point. Always assess the quality of the server’s serve before deciding whether to lob or choose a more direct return.

When You Need Time to Recover

Lobs aren’t always about gaining an immediate advantage—they can be an essential defensive tool when you find yourself out of position. When you're caught deep behind the baseline or pushed off the court, a lob can give you the precious seconds you need to regain your footing and recover to a more favorable position. For example, if you’ve been pulled out wide by a deep, aggressive shot and you can’t get back to the center of the court quickly enough, a well-executed lob can buy you time to reset Instead of scrambling to chase down your opponent's next shot, the lob provides a temporary reprieve by forcing your opponent to track the ball high in the air. This can disrupt their rhythm, giving you a better chance to reposition yourself and re-enter the point.

RECQUETS TIP

When Your Opponent is Vulnerable to High Balls

Certain players may struggle with high-bouncing shots, particularly if they’re not comfortable with overheads or if they lack a strong volley game. If you notice that your opponent struggles with lobs, or they routinely fail to track and return high balls effectively, this can be a great opportunity to use the lob more frequently.

Targeting the corners or the baseline with high, looping lobs can be especially effective when your opponent is pushed back or caught off guard by your shot placement. If they are slow to react or positioned poorly, a lob can be an easy way to force them into an uncomfortable situation, often leading to an error or a weak return

The Key to a Successful Lob: Timing

While the lob can be a game-changing shot, it’s important to remember that timing is everything. Overuse of the lob can make you predictable and easy to counter. The lob should be employed with intention: whether it's to buy time for recovery or exploit a weakness in your opponent’s game. It’s a shot that requires finesse and control. Too often at the club level, players resort to lobbing out of habit But when used correctly, the lob can become a key weapon in your tennis arsenal

As with any shot, practice and awareness are crucial. When you hit a lob with the right touch, trajectory, and placement, it can leave your opponent with little chance to respond. So, next time you’re on the court, remember: the lob is a versatile tool but only when used at the right moment
