CU student becomes school board director Michelle Gilliland NEWS EDITOR Gage Bartholomew, a freshman at Clarion University who is majoring in political science with a minor in pre-law, has done something most people his age would never think of doing.

At the ripe age of 19 years old, he ran for a position on the school board in his hometown of Sandy Lake. He won and is now one of the nine members of the Lakeview School Board.

Bartholomew first got involved in politics in 2015, when his neighbor ran for county commissioner, inspiring him to run for office someday.

During the summer of 2018, he thought more about the ways he could help his community and how exactly he could start.

In the early months of 2019, he finally announced his intentions to run.

“It’s to benefit the future generation of

our communities,” said Bartholomew in his announcement to the public.

Before he made the decision to run for school board, he had some challenges to work through. A big concern was how he was going to juggle being a part of such an important group of people and also manage his studies at Clarion, as the board has meetings twice a month in the evenings.

So far things have gone smoothly for him and his meetings are early enough that, when he finally gets back to the university after one, it is not too late. They are also late enough in the evening that they do not stop him from getting work done throughout the day.

After Bartholomew announced his running, he began to campaign throughout the Lakeview School District. He chose to do this because, since it was his first time and he was so young, he felt it necessary to

get his name out to the public. To campaign, he went door to door, walked in local parades, made phone calls and posted yard signs throughout the school district.

One of his biggest goals is to spread the word about the importance of getting young people involved in politics. Personal connection was key, so he did everything he could to reach as many local people as he could.

He is just at the beginning of his political career and he began much earlier than most. With his studies in politics, he hopes to expand his knowledge even further.

He is very passionate about getting people to understand just how important their vote is and educating themselves on what is going on in the political world.

This experience so far has been an amazing learning experience. He has been able to learn more about the district and what

the board provides.

He looks forward to serving for the next four years and learning even more.

Bartholomew’s term is up around the same time that he will be graduating from Clarion. As time goes on, he hopes to continue to expand his political career. He plans to follow the road he is on now and hope that the voters have faith in him and continue to have him as their public servant.

“It is an honor and privilege to be able to one of the youngest people in Mercer County elected to a public office,” Bartholomew said. “The community has entrusted me to serve as a leader in local government and I could not be more grateful.”

New app used during Iowa caucuses flops, leaving constituents unsure of next step

ASSOCIATED PRESS The political universe has been turned upside down by the failure of the Iowa caucuses. Traditionally the event provides the first concrete tally after months of speculation about the presidential primary.

But Monday night’s Democratic caucuses ended inconclusively as the state party blamed technological problems for preventing it from reporting results. Here are some questions and answers about what happened — and what might come next.

WHAT WENT WRONG? The Iowa Democratic Party says an app created to compile and report caucus results malfunctioned due to a “coding issue,” delaying the count. The party says there are no signs of hacking or other intrusion and that the underlying data is “sound.”

The problem was that the app only reported partial data when the precinct

chairs sent the information to party headquarters.

WERE PROBLEMS ANTICIPATED? There were some concerns ahead of time. The caucuses were operating under new, complex rules that required the reporting of three different tiers of results, and that appears to have complicated the counting.

The Iowa Democratic Party didn’t roll the app out to its 1,678 caucus locations until a few hours before the meetings began Monday night. Party officials had said they would not be sending the new mobile app to precinct chairs for downloading until just before the caucuses to narrow the window for any interference, and there wasn’t widespread pretesting by volunteers running the caucus sites.

HOW WILL THE PARTY DETERMINE WHO WON? The results of each caucus meeting must be tabulated on paper. Party officials

are going door-todoor across the state to verify the written results of each caucus meeting and check them against what was reported on the app.

This will take time.

WHEN WILL WE KNOW WHO WON? That’s unclear. The Iowa Democratic Party would not say when it would release full results. It did release the tallies of 71 % of the state’s precincts late Tuesday, but they were not enough to call the race. The fractional result showed former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg with a slight lead over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in the contest for State Delegate Equivalents. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, former Vice President Joe Biden and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar trailed.

WHAT ARE CAMPAIGNS SAYING? Several campaigns initially jumped into the information void and announced, perhaps unsurprisingly, that according to their

own data their candidate did great in Iowa.

But in all of these cases the data was incomplete and the same caveats applied as with the party’s subsequent release of partial results.

As the day dragged on, Warren questioned why the Iowa party wasn’t waiting to release a full tally.

Sanders expressed frustration with the delay but counseled patience. And Buttigieg was emotional at a New Hampshire rally as he spoke of being, at least for the time being, in first place.

HOW WILL THIS AFFECT OTHER STATES? Attention has already shifted to New Hampshire, which votes in a traditional primary on Feb. 11.

Another caucus state — Nevada — said it will not use the same app utilized in Iowa.

Once Nevada votes on Feb. 22, things move fast. South Carolina, the final early state, votes on Feb. 29. Then a mass of 14

states that account for about one-third of the delegates up for grabs votes on March 3, known as Super Tuesday.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR IOWA? There’s no way to know whether one specific candidate benefits from the Iowa mess. The entire primary process was already uncertain, and a new layer of uncertainty has been added without Iowa winnowing the field in its traditional way. It’s also sowed new doubts about the reliability of caucuses, which increases the pressure on Nevada, one of the only remaining caucus states.

Republicans have been gleefully trying to fan Democratic division by stoking rumors online that the meltdown is a conspiracy to cripple Sanders’ insurgent campaign. In the end, though, one thing is clear — the biggest loser is probably Iowa itself, which may forfeit its firstin-the-nation slot over the debacle.

President Trump invites “real people” to speak during State of the Union Address

ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON (AP) — A mother who lost her Army husband to a roadside bomb in Iraq.

A man whose brother was killed by someone the White House contends should have been deported rather than released from jail. A 2-year-old girl born at 21 weeks.

The three individuals are some of the “real people” who helped President Donald Trump highlight key messages in the State of the Union address he delivered Tuesday night.

Invited by the White House, the guests sat in the House chamber, high up in the gallery.

Conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh sat alongside first lady Melania Trump and was presented the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor bestowed by presidents.

Limbaugh has spent his career attacking

and disparaging Democratic lawmakers and leaders, and recently announced he has cancer. Trump called him the “greatest fighter and winner that you will ever meet.”

Amy Williams, from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was another guest Tuesday night with her two children, 6-year-old Elliana and 3-year-old Rowan.

Trump told the crowd that Williams works full-time and volunteers helping military families. Over the past seven months, her husband, Sgt. 1st Class Townsend Williams, has been deployed to Afghanistan, his fourth trip to the Middle East.

Trump thanked her, then told her he had a surprise: Her husband had returned from deployment and was at the Capitol.

Sgt. Williams walked down the stairs in his uniform to greet a shocked Amy Williams, and he hugged his children. He then hugged his wife.

When Trump looked up at Kelli and Gage Hake of Stillwater, Oklahoma, he reminded the nation about the targeted drone strike he ordered in January that killed Qassem Soleimani, then Iran’s top military commander.

Kelli Hake was home with Gage, then 1-year-old, in the spring of 2008 when she was informed that her husband, Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Hake, had been killed during his second tour of duty in Iraq. The White House claims the sergeant’s fighting vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb supplied by Soleimani.

Trump has said he ordered the strike against Soleimani, who had just arrived at the airport in Baghdad, Iraq, on Jan. 3, because he was actively plotting attacks on U.S. service members in the region.

Trump also highlighted his clampdown on illegal immigration, using the De-

cember 2018 killing in California of Rocky Jones. The White House blames California’s “sanctuary state” policy for allowing the release from jail of a man it said should have been deported instead. The man went on a crime spree and Jones was among the victims, according to local news reports.

The victim’s brother, Jody Jones, was a State of the Union guest.

Trump also introduced 13-year-old Iain Lanphier, an eighth-grader from Arizona, to promote the launch of Space Force, the first new military service in more than 70 years.

Trump said Lanphier “has his eye on the Space Force” and noted that his hero, sitting next to him, was his great-grandfather, Charles McGee, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen.

They both received bipartisan applause.

Also attending the speech was Ivan

Simonovis, the former police chief of Venezuela’s capital of Caracas. Simonovis was imprisoned in 2004 and held for nearly 15 years on what he considered trumped-up charges of ordering police to fire on pro-government demonstrators during a coup against then-President Hugo Chavez. Simonovis escaped last year and was brought to the United States.

His detention has been a rallying cry for the opposition in Venezuela, currently led

by Juan Guaidó, who has the backing from the U.S. and nearly 60 nations that considered President Nicolas Maduro’s 2018 election a fraud.

These countries also blame Maduro’s socialist policies for a political and economic crisis threatening the region’s stability.

Guaidó was also a special guest. Trump called Guaidó the “true and legitimate” leader of Venezuela.

Playing soothing music while studying highly beneficial to students’ performance

Courtney Kelly EDITOR IN CHIEF The fourth week the semester is in full swing.

As students are getting ready to take exams, the search is on for the most effective study methods.

Music is extremely beneficial for taking in and retaining vital information for exams.

Study music is relaxing and can help reduce stress and test anxiety.

Listening to study music while studying or doing homework over a long period of times helps

students focus more.

“The Mozart Effect” suggests that listening to music, specifically Mozart, enhances intelligence. According to the Education Foundation, not only does music help with focus and stress reduction, it also helps with memorization.

The University of Maryland Medical Center encourages students to listen to music while studying because of the positive effects it has on stress.

Not only is music an effective way to reduce stress, research found that listening to peaceful music can decrease high blood pressure, lower one’s heart rate and help heart patients with their anxiety.

Florida National University states that music helps people process their emotions and help when feeling overwhelmed. Being a college student, I think it is safe to say we are usually overwhelmed so having music available is a great outlet. Feeling stressed and overwhelmed can be detrimental when it comes to schoolwork. When I get overwhelmed, I just shut down. I am unable to take in any more information and I have found, similarly to aforementioned studies, taking a break and throwing on my favorite song helps reduce stress.

I have never been able to study in complete silence. For me, trying

to study in silence is more distracting than trying to study in the middle of a construction site.

Now, I can’t listen to music with lyrics when I am studying, even if I don’t know the song, I find myself singing or humming along and paying more attention to the song than what I am supposed to be studying.

Therefore, I find the most beneficial music to be instrumental when I need to focus.

I have a whole playlist on Spotify titled “Just Focus,” and what I love most about it is that current pop culture songs are taken and into strictly instrumental.

Through trial and error, I have found I personally don’t respond well to

classical music such as Beethoven or Mozart.

However, study music will be different for everyone. Some people may only be able to study to instrumental music like me, or some may respond more to different lyrical music.

The point is: whatever works best and gets results for individuals is wonderful. Try different methods, find what works best it will only benefit the student.

Who knows, one might think they could never listen to music while studying but giving it chance and trying to listen to music might be a wonderful revelation.

Impaired driver arrested along Super Bowl parade route, witnesses cheered on police ASSOCIATED PRESS KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — An impaired driver taking a “joy ride” Wednesday along the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade route was put into a forced spin by law enforcement officers who then arrested the driver and another person at gunpoint, according to officials and video footage of the incident.

Clay County Sheriff’s deputies threw out Stop Sticks and several patrol cars surrounded the car and stopped it as it approached the crowd near Union Station, police said. Video posted

by WDAF-TV showed officers approaching the car with weapons drawn before taking two people into custody. The

arrest happened around three hours before the parade began, and no one was injured.

Mayor Quinton Lucas told the TV station that it was an impaired driver taking “a joy ride” and was not terrorismrelated. He praised the quick response of the officers who responded, who were cheered by fans who witnessed the incident.

“We have even more heroes to cheer today,” Lucas said.

Fans streamed into downtown Kansas City by the thousands early Wednesday for the parade and rally to celebrate the Chiefs’ first Super Bowl championship in 50 years.

Some even camped out overnight to reserve choice spots along the route, which will take the team from the inter-

section of Sixth Street and Grand Boulevard to the rally outside Union Station.

“This is so awesome,” said Shauntel Lyons, 40, of Kansas City, who was a Chiefs cheerleader from 2003 to 2005. “I learned so many great lessons from my time with the team. To see them bring home that trophy after 50 years is so gratifying. I’m just glad to be part of it.”

Fans bundled up for chilly conditions and the forecast said 2 to 3 inches of snow were possible during the parade.

The Kansas Legislature took the day off to celebrate and their Missouri counterparts scheduled a light workday. Many area businesses also planned to close or open on a

reduced schedule. At Children’s Mercy Kansas City, the emergency room at the main downtown hospital will be open, but appointments and some surgeries were being rescheduled or moved.

When the Royals won the World Series in 2015, an estimated 800,000 people flocked to the victory parade, shattering expectations in a city with a population of about 470,000 and a metropolitan area of about 2 million.

Cellphone towers were overwhelmed by the throngs, and motorists began parking along side of the interstate and walking as exits jammed.

The city has learned from that experience, adding a temporary cell tower and increasing the number of portable

toilets to 700 from 200.

Officials also are boosting the number of lost child stations, which was deemed crucial after about 100 youngsters became separated from their caretakers in 2015.

To ease parking congestion, the city provided more than 400 buses to run free shuttles, which were pulling out of the drop-off sites every 20 to 30 seconds full of fans. During the Royals parade, commuter buses essentially failed and many fans didn’t get to the parade site because the buses got stuck in traffic.

Police Major Chip Huth said law enforcement from 19 surrounding agencies would help to provide security for the masses.

Rape charge against doctor to be dropped ASSOCIATED PRESS SANTA ANA, Calif.

(AP) — Prosecutors are dropping charges that a doctor who appeared on a reality TV show and his girlfriend raped and drugged women in California after finding key video evidence never actually existed, an official said Tuesday.

Orthopedic surgeon Grant Robicheaux of Newport Beach — who previously appeared on a Bravo TV show called “Online Dating Rituals of the American Male” — and his girlfriend Cerissa Riley were charged in 2018 with rape by use of drugs, kidnapping and other crimes. At the time, authorities alleged that the pair plied their victims with drugs and sexually assaulted them when they were incapable of resisting.

But the high-profile case that grabbed international headlines has been mired in controversy and steeped in a contentious political battle between Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer, who took office about a year ago, and his predecessor Tony Rackauckas. During his election campaign, Spitzer accused Rackauckas of

improperly handling the case and using it to draw publicity.

On Tuesday, Spitzer said that after having attorneys in his office review extensive evidence including audio and video recordings, text messages and documents, he decided to ask the court to dismiss the case.

“There’s insufficient evidence to prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt,” he told a news conference.

The case dates back to police investigations in 2016 into two incidents that weren’t referred for prosecution. The following year, prosecutors were notified there was a DNA match for evidence taken from one of the alleged victims — but it wasn’t to the defendants, Spitzer said.

Authorities searched Robicheaux’s home in January 2018 and found drugs, guns and photos and videos. In September 2018, Rackauckas held a news conference to announce the case and told reporters investigators were sifting through thousands of videos and images found on Robicheaux’s phone, some that showed women who were barely responsive.

The comments drew

widespread media attention. The next month, Rackauckas filed additional charges on behalf of five additional alleged victims who had come forward.

Defense lawyers challenged the existence of videos showing sexual assault. Spitzer confirmed that.

“There is not a single piece of evidence or video or photo that shows an unconscious or incapacitated woman being sexually assaulted.

Not one,” Spitzer said.

Spitzer said Rackauckas acknowledged during a civil deposition last year that he had hoped the case of the good-looking doctor and his girlfriend would bring him publicity during his re-election campaign.

A message was sent to Rackauckas Tuesday seeking comment.

Fearing a potential conflict of interest following his criticism of his predecessor, Spitzer last year asked the California Attorney General’s Office to take over the prosecution of the case. But the state determined there was no issue and the county should proceed.

Spitzer said last week the attorneys he asked

to review the case told him they didn’t feel the allegations of any of the seven alleged victims could be proven in court, prompting him to decide to seek the dismissal.

Spitzer said he has referred Rackauckas’ handling of the case to the State Bar for review and has opened an internal personnel investigation. He apologized to the defendants, the Newport Beach Police Department, the public and the alleged victims, and said he would meet with them to discuss his decision.

Philip Kent Cohen, Robicheaux’s attorney, said the decision was thrilling. Cohen said he hopes his client who was a renowned hand surgeon with a successful medical practice will be able to rebuild a life for himself.

“The mere filing of this case has destroyed irreparably two lives,” he said.

Attorney Michael Fell, who represents one of the alleged victims, said she will be devastated after working with authorities to get the charges filed.

“My client believes with all of her heart she was sexually assaulted,” he said. “That doesn’t

change what she went through.”

Both the district attorney’s office and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department have been hit with stinging accusations of impropriety.

The agencies currently are reviewing more than 22,000 criminal cases amid allegations that more than a dozen deputies mishandled evidence, the Sheriff’s Department announced Tuesday.

The review of evidence, which began late last yer, involves cases from March 2015 to March 2018. It follows allegations that some evidence was booked after convictions, or not at all. That could affect convictions.

“In every one of these cases, a person accused of a crime is owed their right to due process in the criminal justice system,” Sheriff Don Barnes said in a statement. “In some cases, there is also a victim who wants to see justice served.”

The Sheriff’s Department said that five deputies have been fired, nine have received discipline, including non-paid time off, and three deputies remain under investigation.

Depending on the thickness of the chicken breast it should anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes for it to be fully cooked throughout. To ensure safety, make sure the chicken is 165 degrees in the center.

Some chicken soups call for the chicken to be cubed; I, however, prefer shredded chicken. Once the chicken is fully cooked throughout, there must be no pink in the chicken, remove the breasts from the broth using tongs and place on a cutting board. Using two forks, one to hold the chicken in place and the other fork to scrap and tear the chicken into shredded pieces. When the chicken is shredded toss it back into the

broth.

This would be a great time to stop and taste the soup to see if anymore salt, pepper or garlic is needed.

While noodles are usually associated with chicken noodle soup, in order to keep this recipe keto friendly, we will be using cauliflower rice.

Add in eight ounces, roughly equals two cups, of the cauliflower rice and cook until tender.

This process will take about ten minutes.

Once the cauliflower is tender, taste the soup once again and add in more salt, pepper or garlic to taste. Once the flavoring is just right the soup is ready to serve.

Celebrated book editor Alice Mayhew

passed away at age 87 peacefully at home ASSOCIATED PRESS Alice Mayhew, the celebrated and influential editor of political and historical works whose authors ranged from Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to Taylor Branch and Doris Kearns Goodwin, died Tuesday at age 87.

Simon & Schuster, which she joined in 1971, announced that she died “peacefully” at her home in Manhattan. Her death came days after the loss of another Simon & Schuster institution, novelist Mary Higgins Clark, who died last week.

A New York City native, Mayhew edited some of the most notable nonfiction releases of the past half century, including Woodward and Bernstein’s landmark Watergate best-seller “All the President’s

Men,” among the first books to broadly investigate a sitting presidential administration; the feminist classic “Our Bodies, Ourselves”; Branch’s Pulitzer Prize winning “Parting the Waters” and Goodwin’s Pulitzer Prize winning “No Ordinary Time.”

She also worked with former President Jimmy Carter, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the historians Stephen Ambrose, Michael Beschloss and David Herbert Donald among others.

“Alice’s loyalty to her authors was so absolute that despite her extraordinary record in publishing and the many offers she received over the years, she repeatedly refused to participate in any form of publicity or recognition for her achievements, never wavering in her conviction that the spot-

light should always remain entirely focused on her authors,” Simon & Schuster CEO Carolyn Reidy wrote Tuesday in a company-wide memo.

One of her longest partnerships was with Woodward, starting with “All the President’s Men,” continuing through his 2018 bestseller about the Trump administration, “Fear,” and a planned second book on the Trump years, expected this fall. In a telephone interview Tuesday, Woodward told The Associated Press that he and Mayhew last spoke about 10 days ago.

“We were going through some of the information and ideas we had for the new book. We were on track,” Woodward said. “At one point, she said, ‘Can I look at what you have now?’ And I said, “Alice, you always

say, “Never send anything from a book until it’s at least half done.” And she said, “I know, but I really want to look at it.’”

Along with her many successes, Mayhew was involved with publications that were challenged and even withdrawn. In the early 2000s, books

by Goodwin and Ambrose were found

to contain extensive lifting of material without proper credit, leading to the cancellation of Goodwin’s “The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys.” Last year, Mayhew edited “Merchants of Truth,” by former New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson, a media critique that also included passages not fully credited.

Barnes & Noble will suspend reissues of classic literature with new images ASSOCIATED PRESS Barnes & Noble is withdrawing a planned line of famous literature reissued with multicultural cover images that has been met with widespread criticism on social media.

“We acknowledge the voices who have expressed concerns about the Diverse Editions project at our Barnes & Noble Fifth Avenue store and have decided to suspend the initiative,” Barnes & Noble announced in a statement Wednesday.

The author Adriana Herrera had called the books, scheduled to be launched this week, “the classics in blackface.”

“Diverse Editions,” a joint project between Barnes & Noble and Penguin Random House, featured 12 texts, including Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” and L. Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz.” The

words are the same, but on the cover, major characters are depicted with darkskinned illustrations by artists of “different ethnicities and backgrounds,” according to Barnes & Noble.

“Diverse Editions” was announced at a time when the publishing industry is already facing scrutiny over the novel “American Dirt” and its depiction of Mexican life and culture. “Absolute TONE-DEAF decision-making,” Mexican-American writer David Bowles, a leading critic of “American Dirt,” tweeted about “Diverse Editions.”

The decision also comes in February, which is Black History Month, an annual celebration of past and present achievement.

To much disbelief online, the organizers of “Diverse Editions” had said they used artificial intelligence in reviewing more than 100 older books and determining whether the race or ethnicity of

a character is specifically stated. Few would argue that Alice from “Alice in Wonderland” or the title characters of “Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” are fitting for a tribute to black history.

“They could have Googled, chosen a dozen books by actual Black authors that are classics & sent those out with fresh covers & a big event,” author MIkki Kendall tweeted. “Add in bringing in contemporary Black authors to discuss

these works & the whole thing is a win.

They didn’t do the easy or logical thing.”

In its statement Wednesday, Barnes & Noble acknowledged that the new covers were “not a substitute for black voices or writers of color, whose work and voices deserve to be heard.

“The booksellers who championed this initiative did so convinced it would help drive engagement with these classic titles,” according to the bookstore chain. “It was

a project inspired by our work with schools and was created in part to raise awareness and discussion during Black History Month, in which Barnes & Noble stores nationally will continue to highlight a wide selection of books to celebrate black history and great literature from writers of color.”

In sonic terms, the album sounds similar to many of Shake’s labelmates creations, mainlyKanye West’s “808’s and Heartbreak” and Kid Cudi’s entire discography. There is something raw about the emotion and energy in the album, which contrasts greatly with the electronic nature of the instrumentation. At times, it sounds poppy, fulfilling an electropop niche which has been long missing from popular music.

At other times however, it sounds downright grungy, though it is missing the guitars which are instead replaced by synthesizers.

Many songs echo the current emo-rap trends, albeit without the clichés and stereotypes.

The lyrics and subject matter that 070 Shake sings echoes depression, suicidal thoughts

and substance abuse, which are all extremely personal and heartfelt.

However, this is juxtaposed with the instrumental quality of the album, which on songs like “Under The Moon” and “Morrow” make the lyrics take on a more detached appearance.

This is not to say that the songwriting lacks meaning. Rather, the weight of the instrumentals is felt throughout all the album; there is not one song that does not aspire to great heights both lyrically and instrumentally.

070 Shake’s singing is the perfect complement

for this context. It ranges from breathy and soft to extremely emotional.

At many points it tugs at the heartstrings of the listener, demanding attention and respect.

One of the strongest takeaways from “Modus Vivendi” is that 070 Shake’s next work is going to have to work hard to beat this. Only her debut album, she has already shown more polish and maturity than a lot of acts do in their entire careers. The future only looks bright for her, and it will be exciting to see where she takes her music from here.

Studies show top films are more diverse in current years than ever before ASSOCIATED PRESS Hollywood’s awards season may not show it, but the most popular films are increasingly diverse, a new study finds.

According to new research released Tuesday by the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, more of 2019′s top movies featured minority or female lead characters than ever recorded before.

Analyzing the top 100 films at the North

American box office, USC researchers found that 31 movies had leads or co-leads from an underrepresented racial group, an increase of four films from 2018 and nearly triple the number of 10 years ago.

The data showed similar gains for female leads. Of the same films, 43 featured female leads or co-leads, an increase of four films from 2018 and more than double the number of female leads (20) in 2007.

Combined with studies released last month that showed a notable uptick in the numbers of female directors, the research paints a picture of an industry that, after years of lagging behind in representation in front of and behind the camera, is showing real signs of progress.

While still falling short of an accurate reflection of the American population (51 percent of which is female and about 40 percent are people

of color), researchers called it “a banner year for inclusion.”

“It is clear that Hollywood is taking steps to create more inclusive stories and that those films are connecting with audiences,” Stacy L. Smith, founder of the Inclusion Initiative, said in statement.

But those gains haven’t been reflected in Hollywood’s awards season, which culminates Sunday with the Academy Awards.

For the 87th time, no female filmmakers were nominated for best director. And while the much-nominated Korean drama “Parasite” has made history, only one person of color (Cynthia Erivo, for “Harriet”) was nominated in an acting category. At the British Academy of Film and Television Awards on Sunday, only white actors were nominated.

“There is also a very obvious disconnect between what sells tickets and what garners awards points to

a systemic bias at cultural institutions like the BAFTAs or the Academy Awards,” Smith said. “After another year in which the major studios increased their output of films with female and underrepresented leads or co leads, it is critical to recognize that talent is not limited by gender or race/ethnicity.”

The USC study also assessed the major distributors. Because box office is a key metric in their research, that doesn’t include releases from streaming services including Netflix and Amazon, neither of which disclosed ticket sales for most of their 2019 releases.

Universal, the only studio led by a woman (studio chief Donna Langley), led all studios with nine films featuring a female lead and eight films featuring leads from an underrepresented ethnicity.

Kansas City Chiefs make history in Super Bowl 54 Austin Troutman WRITER

Super Bowl 54 in Miami made for a night of excitement, history and special performances as it crowned a new NFL champion.

In the pregame show, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made the announcements for both teams entering the field to attempt to pump up the fans watching at home.

The San Francisco 49ers were announced first and the Kansas City Chiefs entered after, looking into a sea of red in the seats.

Fans witnessed Super Bowl history right away, as a 6:41 p.m.

ET kickoff marked the latest start time that the game has ever seen,

beating Super Bowl 50 by two minutes.

Before this year’s matchup, the winner of the past five Super Bowl coin tosses had lost the game.

San Francisco won the toss and chose to get the ball in the second half.

The 49ers collected the first three points of the game on a 38-yard field goal from the toe of Robbie Gould.

In the final minute of the first quarter, Kansas City answered with a one-yard touchdown run.

The extra point was good, and the Chiefs led 7-3 at the end of the quarter.

It did not stop there, as Harrison Butker kicked a 31-yard field goal with 9:32 left in

the half to move ahead 10-3.

The 49ers tied the game with 5:05 left to play before halftime on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk, the final scoring play of the first half.

Super Bowl halftime shows always capture attention, and this year showed Shakira and Jennifer Lopez take to the stage and perform for about 15 minutes in front of the large Miami crowd.

After that concluded, San Francisco dominated the third quarter as a Gould 42-yard field goal and a Raheem Mostert one-yard touchdown extended the lead to 20-10.

With one quarter left, the Chiefs fought back with two pass-

ing touchdowns from Patrick Mahomes, one to Travis Kelce and one to Damien Williams.

Williams was not finished, as he took off for a 38-yard touchdown run with 1:12 left in the game to put it away by a 31-20 final score.

The win marked the second Super Bowl title for Kansas City, the first one in 50 years.

Mahomes won the Super Bowl MVP award, who went 26/42 with 286 passing yards, two touchdowns and 29 rushing yards.

The loss for San Francisco dropped them to 5-2 all-time in the big game.

Also, the loss streak for Super Bowl coin toss winners extended to six, as the last to win the toss and the game

was the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 48.

An interesting fact coming out of the game was that a wide receiver has not caught a pass in the Super Bowl since Chris Hogan in Super Bowl 52 for the New England Patriots.

The appeal of Super Bowl 54 coming into the weekend was a matchup that was never seen before, an excellent quarterback matchup and historic implications.

Fans across the world witnessed a historic edition of the Super Bowl that will most likely be discussed for years to come.

SPORTS OPINION: New changes coming to MLB starting 2021 Austin Troutman WRITER Recently, there has been some news in Major League Baseball (MLB) that the designated hitter (DH) may be moving to the National League (NL) as early as 2021.

American League fans are making the argument that the DH in the NL will provide more action, which would create higher attendance in baseball.

I would like to make the argument that the DH rule should be left alone, although many would like to disagree.

First, we need to address the fact that baseball is a unique sport

where the two leagues play under different rules.

Pitchers play both sides of the ball in the NL, and pitchers who can handle the bat provide a slight advantage which can enhance the strategy.

Strategy is the main reason not to bring the DH to National League games.

Baseball fans with a deep knowledge of the game enjoy seeing tough decisions that a manager needs to face throughout a game.

One of those tough decisions is a double switch, where a manager can bring in a bullpen arm and a new position player into the game at the same time.

The importance of the double switch is to have the lineup spots switch also, letting the new position player bat first while the pitcher can work more innings before heading to the plate.

Since the pitcher does not bat in the AL, the manager only needs to worry about when to take the pitcher out instead of his lineup spots.

The second component of strategy that is seen in almost every NL game is pinch hitting.

Working around the hitters on your bench is important in late game situations because the manager must decide if the pitcher should stay in or if the runs are worth trying for in that

moment.

American League bench players are mainly used for pinch running or defensive purposes, while many teams use a short bench with the DH to add another arm to the bullpen.

Strategy is worth watching and taking it away for one to two more runs per game is just not worth the effort of changing the rules in my opinion.

Also, the argument saying a DH will increase attendance is not the best way to fix the problem in my opinion.

If baseball seriously wanted to increase attendance, it could lower ticket or concession prices, move extended netting before the game

for a more interactive experience and stop attempting to change the rules of the game.

Since Rob Manfred took over as the MLB commissioner, he has been working on ways to increase the pace of play and tweak parts of the game for a better experience.

Some of the changes have worked, but others, such as the new three batter minimum rule in 2020, should have been left alone.

Pitchers have been hitting in baseball since its inception, and it should stay the same moving forward.

It’s time to stop all the rule changes, and just enjoy the sport like it was intended.

Hockey wins tough match against Slippery Rock Seth Kaminski SPORTS EDITOR Last Thursday, the Golden Eagles In-line Hockey team played its second game of the semester against Slippery Rock. This was the first time Clarion faced Slippery Rock this

season so the team was not sure what to expect.

Going into this matchup, Slippery Rock was riding high off an 8-6 win against The Community College of Allegheny County which moved their record to 8-1-0.

Clarion went into the matchup with a record

of 4-5-0 but managed to give Slippery Rock its second loss of the season. The puck dropped at 10:30 p.m. at Robert Morris’s Island Sports Complex. Clarion was the first on the scoreboard, but more goals quickly started to pop up between the two teams.

The final score was 4-3 which bumped up the Clarion record to 5-5-0.

Michael Filauri played his first game on the team and proved himself as a great addition to the teams’ defense. The Inline Hockey team is getting ready to play CCAC Thursday, Feb. 6 at 9:30

p.m., where it hopes to pull out another win. Be sure to check the team out on social media for updates on scores, standings and more.

Andy Reid tells parade-goers Chiefs will win again next year ASSOCIATED PRESS KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of Kansas City Chiefs fans braved sub-freezing wind chills on Wednesday to celebrate the team’s first Super Bowl victory in 50 years, and if Coach Andy Reid is to be believed, they’ll be back for an encore next year.

Fans lined the 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) parade route to thank their football heroes for bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to Kansas City and ending a Super Bowl drought that began after the Chiefs won Super Bowl IV in 1970.

Reid thanked the fans for their continued support and for attending the parade.

“Next year, we’re coming right back here,” Reid said in a brief speech. “One more time baby, one more time.”

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Super Bowl MVP who has captured the fans’ devotion in only his third NFL season, struggled with a strained voice but said the championship fulfilled two goals he set when he became the team’s starter.

First, he said, he wanted to bring the

Lamar Hunt trophy for winning the AFC championship back to Kansas City. The late Lamar Hunt and the Hunt family founded the team as the Dallas Texans in 1960 before moving the team to Kansas City in 1963 and changing the name.

“The second most important thing I wanted to do was get the Lombardi Trophy for the greatest coach of all time, Andy Reid,” he said.

Hunt’s son, Clark Hunt, said his father told him before he died in 2006 that the parade and celebration after the 1970 Super Bowl was the best day of his life because of the joy of the fans.

“Thank you for giving my dad and I some the best days of our lives,” he told the fans.

“We love you.”

Tyreek Hill, the speedster wide receiver, also promised fans the team would be back for more Super Bowl parades. He told the fans that their support and love fueled the team’s success.

“That’s what makes us ball everyday,” Hill said. “Get your tickets, you are going to be in this same spot next year.”

During the parade,

several players, including Chris Jones, Tyrann Mathieu and Travis Kelce, got off their double-decker buses to high-five fans and dance down the street.

Reid left his bus to show The Lombardi Trophy to fans along the route.

Other players sprayed fans with champagne and some, including Mahomes, chugged beer.

At one point, Mahomes was seen pouring a beer from the top of a double-decker bus into the mouth of Kelce, who was in the street.

The event was nearly marred about three hours before the parade began, when an impaired driver broke through a barrier and sped along the parade route. Stop Sticks were thrown and patrol vehicles put the car into a forced spin, stopping it near a crowd of fans.

The driver and another person were arrested at gunpoint, according to officials and video footage of the incident.

No one was injured.

Police said in a news release the driver is under investigation for impairment. No weapons were found in the vehicle and there were no indications of terrorist activity, said police, who were trying to determine the suspect’s motive.

Mayor Quinton Lucas told WDAF-TV he was proud of the quick response of officers, who were cheered by fans who witnessed the incident.

“We have even more heroes to cheer today,” Lucas said.

Some fans slept overnight and others began arriving in downtown Kansas City in the early hours Wednesday to reserve choice viewing spots.

“This is so awesome,” said Shauntel Lyons, 40, of Kansas City, who was a Chiefs cheerleader from 2003 to 2005. “I learned so many great lessons from my time with the team.

To see them bring home that trophy after 50 years is so gratifying.

I’m just glad to be part of it.”

Fans bundled up for chilly conditions but the forecast for 2 to 3 inches of snow did not materialize, with only light snow falling intermittently.

Wind chills in the teens didn’t deter fans like Dana Reynolds, of Holt, who has been a Chiefs fan for more than 30 years. She and others arrived at 5 a.m. and were taking shelter under a canopy, complete with electric

hand warmers, food and everything needed to survive the hours-long wait.

“We want to celebrate the Chiefs season and bring the city together,” she said. “It’s been worth the wait. What Andy Reid and this team have done for the city is amazing.”

The Kansas Legislature took the day off to celebrate and their Missouri counterparts scheduled a light workday. Many area businesses also planned to close or open on a reduced schedule.

At Children’s Mercy Kansas City, the emergency room at the main downtown hospital was open, but appointments and some surgeries were rescheduled or moved.

The Chiefs Super Bowl win came five years after the city’s Kansas City Royals baseball team won a World Series. An estimated 800,000 people flocked to that victory parade, shattering expectations in a city with a population of about 470,000 and a metropolitan area of about 2 million. There was no immediate estimate of the crowd size of Wednesday’s rally.
