NEWS CU, Cal U and Edinboro Integration Continues Dusty Morrison NEWS EDITOR Over the summer of 2021, Clarion University furthered their plan to integrate with two other state schools in the PASSHE system. Clarion University, California University and Edinboro University will be joining together over the course of the next three years to create one university in western Pennsylvania.

The schools assure the students that they will graduate on time and their programs will not be affected.

However, every graduating class after June 2022 will have a new university name on their diploma. The new name has not been announced but will take effect in fall of 2022.

To help students, parents, staff and the community better

understand this integration, Chancellor Dan Greenstein began writing a blog with information about the transition. His posts on the integration started In June of 2021.

The blog consists of monthly updates through August detailing changes and plans for the future.

Chancellor Greenstein points out that the goal of the integration is to create two affordable and successful educational institutions. Over 1,000 people were involved in the creation of the integration plan.

There was also a public review period for those affected to share their thoughts and contribute to possible changes to said plan.

In a post from July 12, 2021, Chancellor Greenstein reviewed changes that were

made and points that were considered during the public review period. These summaries included an extended timeline, clarifying the use of online learning and economic impact of the integration.

In his July post, the Chancellor thanks Governor Wolf for his commitment to helping fund higher education. Wolf signed a law giving state funded universities a one time investment donation of $50 million.

Greenstein said, “Given all that we have accomplished and all that lies ahead, our universities are the place to be in public higher education today.”

Destiny Brooks, a student at California University, is involved in meetings regarding the integration. She is part of the executive board of

the Student Activities Board.

Brooks’ school has been working with Dr. Dale to help their students understand the integration and be involved in the process.

During the summer, Brooks and her fellow students involved with the board met with Dr. Dale during a student leader meeting.

Brooks emphasized that during their meetings with Dr. Dale she was great to work with and very understanding towards the students’ needs and so on.

The California University Activities Board helps voice the concerns of the students. According to Brooks, there are mixed feelings from the students when it comes to the integration.

“There are some students who feel as

though this is a very positive thing and there are students who feel the complete opposite,” said Brooks.

At Clarion University, many students also have mixed feelings.

Many students have expressed various opinions about the integration and what they like and do not like about it. A big topic of discussion is the name change.

“I understand the need for the integration itself, however, I am not a fan of the name change,” said Jessica Yarger, a junior at Clarion.

More information about the integration will be announced in the months to come.

Students will continue to receive emails about “Integration Insights” to help them understand the integration better and what is to come in the near future.

NEWS Clarion University holds vaccine clinic

Clarion University is giving everyone a chance amidst the pandemic to get vaccinated if interested. The university is holding a vaccine clinic on Thursday, Sept. 23 for the first dose from 9:3011:30 am, and Thursday, Oct. 21 for the second dose following the same hours.

This will be taking place at Suites on Main South in the main entrance which can be found on 896 Main St. Clarion, PA 16214.

This was able to be done by CU partnering with Primary Health Network. The vaccine that will be distributed is the Moderna Vaccine which requires two separate doses that are 28 days apart hence why there will be two separate days

for this vaccination clinic.

Moderna is approved for those that are 18 and older, so those planning on attending this vaccination event must be of age.

This particular vaccine clinic is available on a walk-in basis. If anyone finds themselves having questions about this chance to get the COVID-19 Moderna Vaccine, please call 724-699-9211 to get some answers.

“I am glad the university is making the vaccine even more accessible to us students as sometimes many do not want to take the time to find other places to get the vaccine or need the push to do it, said senior, Kaitlyn Horgan.

“It is especially nice they are doing this during another crazy outbreak with the delta variant impacting

people left and right.”

If people are unable to attend this clinic but are still interested in receiving one of the COVID-19 vaccines, they can book an appointment at Clarion Community Health Center on 30 Pinnacle Drive, here, in Clarion, PA. Students and employees at CU can schedule an appointment on the website https:// primary-health.net/ LocationDetail.aspx?id=60.

If someone who is in need of a third shot or their booster, they can also call 724699-9211 and click on option three for more information to schedule an appointment for said dose.

The university is still highly encouraging those who are on campus or in the area who do not yet have a vaccine to do so, particularly staff and

students.

The university is still following masking rules in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as cases are rising in the area. Vaccinated or not, your mask is supposed to be worn inside all buildings.

Testing is done in Eagle Commons for all students and staff in room 107/108 on Monday and Wednesday 12- 2 pm if you think you may be under the weather.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said the country ensured after 9/11 that “our unity and resolve runs even deeper than our sadness,” adding that Americans who said such an attack should never happen again should “remember what it takes to keep that promise.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said it has been “a long road since 9/11, and our country has changed in ways we could have scarcely imagined back then.”

Still, Schumer said, “one thing does not change: our obligation to remember and honor every single American we lost that day.”

The ceremony comes as Capitol Police are preparing for a rally Saturday in defense of the insurrectionists who were charged after the Jan. 6 attack. The area where the lawmakers stood Monday morning will soon be fenced off to secure the building — and keep out the public — in the event that the protest becomes violent.

Many Republicans in Congress have downplayed the severity of the January siege by supporters of former President Donald Trump, opposing investigations of the attack and standing

by Trump as he repeats falsehoods about election fraud. It is uncertain whether any lawmakers will participate in Saturday’s rally, as several did on Jan 6.

Though congressional leaders avoided direct comparisons, former President George W. Bush — who was

in office on 9/11 — drew a direct connection between domestic terrorism now and the foreign terrorism that struck America then.

Speaking Saturday at the national memorial to the victims of Flight 93, who forced their hijacked airplane into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania before it could be used as a weapon in Washington, Bush warned of “violence that gathers within.”

“There is little cultural overlap between violent extremists abroad and violent extremists at home,” he said. “But in their disdain for pluralism, in their disregard for human life, in their determination to defile national symbols, they are children of the same foul spirit. And it is our continuing duty to confront them.”

Apple’s releases next iPhone, similar to last years ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN RAMON, Calif. (AP) — Apple unveiled its next iPhone line-up, including a model that offers twice the storage available in earlier versions and other modest upgrades to last year’s editions that proved to be a big hit among consumers devouring the latest technology during the pandemic.

The pre-recorded video event streamed Tuesday gave Apple a chance to present a polished story following a turbulent few weeks. The recent bumps included a hastily patched security vulnerability that could let hackers secretly take control of iPhones and other Apple devices; a backlash to the company’s plans to scan iPhones for images of child sex abuse and a federal judge’s ruling that chipped

away further at the competitive barrier Apple built around its app store, which generates billions of dollars in profits each year.

As has been the case since Apple’s late co-founder unveiled the first iPhone in 2007, Apple executives talked reverently about the latest model, even though it isn’t dramatically different from the version Apple released nearly a year ago.

Like last year’s model, the new iPhone 13 will come in four different designs, with prices starting from $700 to $1,100. They’re scheduled to be in stores September 24.

“It’s an incremental upgrade,” said Gartner analyst Tuong Nguyen. “Some of the new features are impressive, but most of them are not noticeable or practical for most users.”

Possibly the most notable change in the latest high-end

iPhone 13 will be an option for a full terabyte of storage — that’s 1,000 gigabytes — on the device, up from its previous maximum of 512 gigabytes.

That’s enough storage to accommodate roughly 250,000 photos, or about 500 hours of high definition video.

Having a massive amount of storage could become more important to many consumers with the advent of ultra-high definition video and ultrafast wireless 5G networks that will make downloading content faster and easier, Nguyen said.

Apple is also promising better cameras on the iPhone 13, including an improved ultrawide lens, a cinematic-like video feature and technology for better nighttime pictures.

(The latter mirrors a feature Google has long offered in its line of Pixel phones, which haven’t been

big sellers yet.) As usual, the latest iPhones are supposed to have longer-lasting batteries, too.

“We keep making the iPhone more capable,” Apple CEO Tim Cook boasted.

These kinds of incremental upgrades have become routine for Apple and other device makers in recent years as the pace of smartphone innovation slowed, even while prices for some phones have climbed above $1,000. That trend has prompted more consumers to hold on to their older smartphones for longer periods.

But the release of last year’s iPhone 12 unleashed one of Apple’s biggest sales spurts since 2014, possibly because the pandemic helped make homebound people realize it was time to get a newer and better model than what they had been using.

Through the first six months of this year, Apple’s iPhone

sales have surged by nearly 60% from the same time last year.

That boom has helped push Apple’s stock price near its all-time highs recently, giving the company a market value of about $2.5 trillion -- more than twice what it was before the pandemic began 18 months ago.

Apple’s shares dipped 1% Tuesday in a sign that that investors weren’t excited by what they saw in the new iPhones.

Although the iPhone is still by far Apple’s biggest moneymaker, the company has been trying to supplement its success with peripheral products such as its smartwatch. The Cupertino, California, company used Tuesday’s showcase to provide a preview of its next Apple Watch, which will feature a thinner, more rounded and brighter display.

Ty Bagoly is The Clarion Call’s athlete of the week a record of 106-42 throughout his whole career up until that time.

In 2015, he was the Fargo Freestyle Cadet All-American and a year later was awarded as the NHSCA Junior National All-American. In the same year, 2016, Bagoly was also Berks County and District III sectional champion.

He was not only outstanding in sports, but also academics throughout high school as well. He accomplished PWCA All-Academic honors two years in a row showing his success on and off the mat.

Again, in the 2018 and 2019 season, Bagoly grabbed his first four victories at the Clarion Open.

In 2019 and 2020, Bagoly had an outstanding season. He wrestled at heavyweight as an NCAA qualifier that would have made it to the “pigtail” round if the COVID-19 pandemic did not interrupt. He completed his year with a 16-6 record despite the pandemic getting in the way.

There was also a point within this season that he won seven straight matches in a row.

Bagoly said, “my most rewarding moment so far was qualifying for the NCAA tournament.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly gotten in the way for all student-athletes

recently, especially Bagoly.

He shared how the pandemic impacted last year much worse than it has this year. It has an impact on practices and matches with students in and out of quarantine.

“I hope to see myself at the NCAA tournament again,” said Bagoly. “Also, I’d like to see us having a winning record as a team.”

This wrestling season is just beginning for Bagoly as they just began practices on Sept. 7. There are many ways to keep up to date with what is going on in wrestling.

OPINIONS The benefits of walking for fitness Michelle Gilliland EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Many students on CU campus have taken walking for fitness. I currently am taking this class with Mr. Katis and I can say it has brought me a new appreciation for doing something as small as going outside and taking a walk.

Whether that walk is big or small, it definitely changes your mindset for the better, which is definitely something we all need amidst a growing pandemic.

Mr. Katis finds this class especially important now that we are still carrying on through the COVID-19 virus. He shared how many students did not get the chance to pay attention to their health during this time.

I can agree and say that myself and others certainly had a hard time finding the motivation to do so during the height

of the pandemic and even now at times.

“I love teaching the class because I can see the excitement in students’ eyes to be back with their friends again and talking to each other during a threemile walk,” said Mr. Katis. “The class is important to me because I try to show them, they can really walk that far for their overall fitness, and I hope an old guy can inspire them to make walking a part of their lifestyle.”

With all of that being said, I really do encourage people to go outside or even to the recreational center for a walk.

I am someone who certainly feels like I have no time for anything other than schoolwork or sleep, but even a 30-minute walk could impact your day, week or month for the better.

For me, I at first dreaded going on a walk, especially during times like now when the

weather is painfully humid, but afterwards my mind feels refreshed and I feel like I really got some time to myself that day which is important for any human-being.

Your health will greatly improve if you incorporate some kind of walking into your schedule. More specifically, pulmonary and cardiovascular health will see major improvement according to betterhealth.vic.gov.au.

With those things being said, if you are improving your heart and lung health, you are reducing risk for

disease and issues in those areas such as stroke and breathing issues.

That is enough to get me into walking more and I hope that may even be the much-needed push someone else needs to feel motivated to get outside and go for a walk. Especially during times right now, it is important to improve your mental and physical health.

If you do not want to walk alone, invite a friend or two.

Doing something as small as that could turn it into a good habit you may not

break. I also highly encourage students to take walking for fitness with Mr. Katis, it will heal your mind and body.

“At the end of the class we donate candy to the Cancer Center at Clarion Hospital to help the patients as they go through radiation and chemo treatments,” said Mr. Katis. “It’s sort of the last symbolic gesture the students make to donate that candy and say I’m now going to try to live a healthy lifestyle in the future.”

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Kanye West’s “Donda” delivers

Eli Clark A&E EDITOR Last issue, I did a first impression on Kanye West’s 10th solo album, “Donda” and was conflicted on how I felt about the album as a cohesive project. Now, two weeks later, I feel confident in my opinion on the project.

“Donda” delivers.

In my first impression I noted that after “Off The Grid” I felt that the album found its footing and picked up momentum. I still feel this way, and also still feel that the album flows well as a cohesive project. Not every song is incredible, but everything is at least good through track 23, with some genuinely great songs mixed in between like, “Praise God”, “Believe What I Say”, and “Remote Control”.

Two things that have really stood out to me after subsequent listens are the production and features.

The production on “Donda” is not your typical Kanye production. While it has that Kanye flair to it, it is amongst the most

subdued Kanye productions. While there are some lively moments on the album like the aforementioned “Off The Grid,” many of the songs on the album feature a very cold and sparse sound. This is highlighted by the first three tracks on the album, which I initially didn’t like.

A major reason why I didn’t like the opening of the album was because there isn’t a real drum beat on the album until “Off The Grid” which is about 11 minutes into the album. After having time with the album however, I think it was a smart move to open the album like this. It gets the listener ready for the rest of the album, which again, is far from Kanye’s most lively material. Even the songs that have driving beats give off that same cold and sparse vibe. It is a constant throughout “Donda” and is a huge part of its identity.

This makes sense when you look at Kanye’s life over the last few months. Aside from the typical Kanye craziness, he is currently in the process of get-

ting a divorce with Kim Kardashian. It’s easy to look at this divorce as a piece of celebrity tabloid news, but at the core of it are two real human beings. Kanye is a real human being with real emotions. Kim Kardashian is the mother of his children. This is a real, earth-shattering event for Kanye, and I feel the production on this album is a direct reflection of what he is going through.

The features are also incredible and, in some cases, carry the songs. First off, the list of artists featured on “Donda” is insane. If I were to include all the artists that are featured this article would be

multiple pages long, but some of the biggest names include JAY-Z, Playboi Carti, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Lil Yachty, Young Thug, Don Toliver, and Kid Cudi. Young Thug specifically delivers an incredible verse on “Remote Control” that carries the song.

With all of that said, it’s not all good with “Donda.”

Baby Keem is featured on “Praise God” and delivers a truly terrible verse. He struggles to string together a single coherent thought and sounds legitimately goofy. Luckily, Kanye does enough for the track to make it worth listening to.

In my first impression, I mentioned how the biggest problem with the album was the “part two’s” at the end of the album. Unlike the intro of the album, I have not changed my mind about this and still feel that nothing interesting is done with them. Acting more like remixes than new songs, they throw the entire flow of the album off, and in my opinion, hurt the album as a whole.

While “Donda” doesn’t stick the landing, the rest of the album is good enough that I feel confident in saying that “Donda” truly delivers.

“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It:” The beginning of the end for the franchise Laney Urban WRITER Horror is a difficult thing to replicate. Any experience is never the same as the first time one encounters it, yet this effect seems almost amplified when considering fear. While a scare may physically work a second time, the same mental processing of that scare gets categorized as something cheap and overplayed.

With this in mind, horror movie sequels are a very hard thing to do right. The Conjuring universe struck gold with “The Conjuring 2,” perfecting that difficult balance of old and new to somehow create a film which many thought surpassed its predecessor. The expectations for “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” were high, yet these hopes were crushed within a matter of minutes. The third installment in The Conjuring movies was an unfocused and confusing mess which departed from its source material to instead

make a boring and rehashed plotline that was undeserving of anyone’s time.

As with the two previous films, “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” follows Ed and Lorraine Warren played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, this time helping Arne Johnson (Ruairi O’Connor) and his family after he accidently kills his landlord due to a demonic possession. After some collaboration with the police and investigation of their own, it appears that witchcraft could be involved in this unusual case. Ed and Lorraine must work together, both to gain evidence for the court to prove that Arne was under demonic influence and to stop this curse before anyone else is affected.

The main draw to any of The Conjuring films is their claim to realism. Ed and Lorraine Warren were real people with books and a museum which houses cursed objects just as displayed in the movies. There are photos, video recordings, and

audio snippets which can be found in reference to each case and often are displayed at the end of the movies.

Where “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do it” suffers most of all is its decision to stray from this material. The particular case which the film covers is highly debated and uncredited.

The family involved have claimed that much of what the Warrens wrote was untrue and exaggerated, and on top of that the entirety of the witchcraft storyline was a fabricated plot within the movie to fill space. It speaks absolute volumes that in a film based on actual demonic occurrences, the main storyline is totally a product of the film itself.

There is also the issue of the plot being so focused on Ed and Lorraine themselves.

Throughout the previous two movies, while the cases which the couple deal with take the A plot, the stories of the Warrens’ love and dedication to each other often serve as a side

story. With Arne being in prison for the majority of the film, the focus must shift to Ed and Lorraine for the entirety of the movie which leaves the film feeling like a repeat of the last two. It is clear that Ed and Lorraine love each other and that this love is what keeps them safe and bound together, yet the contrived outside forces, mainly Ed’s heart medication, which provide conflict feel so minuscule compared the literal evil forces which Ed and Lorraine have stood against before.

It is beginning to seem as if The Conjuring universe has run its course. With the entirety of the film library spanning eight full in-

terconnected films, the well is running dry. The best advice one could provide now would be for the franchise to exit gracefully. While this particular film was a failure, the universe as a whole still has a leg to stand on. As of June, there are two expected films to be worked on, those being “The Crooked Man” and “The Nun 2”, but nothing is confirmed. As sad as any fan will be to let this chapter in horror go, The Conjuring films still have a chance to be remembered as the groundbreaking movies that changed the genre forever instead of a half-baked franchise that went on for too long.
