SAAC hosts event to benefit Make-A-Wish Michelle Gilliland WRITER Sunday, Oct. 13, the Clarion University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), hosted a Gatorade Pong tournament in the Gemmell MPR. The goal of this tournament was to help take part in raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This was the first time they had

The SAAC is made up of multiple representatives from each Clarion team, including athletic trainers and cheerleaders. They always strive to make money for this particular cause like other PSAC schools. The goal this year for all of their Make-A-Wish funding is $1000.

Out of the $1000, this event helped to raise $235. The goal that was set for the pong event was $200. They surpassed this year’s goal by $35, by selling Make-A-Wish bracelets at this event.

During the tournament, the Clarion teams stuck around to support and watch all of the many games taking place. Good sportsmanship was seen

as those involved in the competition would congratulate and cheer on those around them.

The event registration ran from 3 to 3:30 p.m. and the event began at 4 p.m.

The runner up of the pong tournament was a team that consisted of two baseball players and the winning team was two women’s golf players. They all won prizes that were donated

“The cast was remarkably consistent,” Bullington said. “I wish that more people had seen it, but I know that it is certainly not everyone’s taste.”

Bullington made the decision to put on “Buried Child.” “I was kind of thinking of Sam Shepard, and on the same day, within an hour of each other, Ed Powers and a student actor both

mentioned ‘Buried Child,’” said Bullington.

“And I thought that it is a sign, it has to be ‘Buried Child.’”

The play won the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for drama. The Pulitzer website describes this award as being “for a distinguished play by an American author, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life.”

Clarion University hosted its third annual Domestic Violence and Abuse Awareness Day event. The all-day event ran from 2-4 p.m. in the Gemmell MPR. The event provided information and resources that are available to students and members of Clarion County.

The goal of the event was to raise awareness about the various types of domestic abuse. A panel discussion ran from 2-3 p.m. and was

followed by an artwork gallery showing that ran for the last hour until 4 p.m.

Students and staff used various art forms to represent various forms of domestic abuse, such as physical, emotional and financial abuse.

The Presidential Commission on Sexual Harrassment and the Office of Social Equity sponsored the event.

Planetarium hosts first show of the year Raina Ferguson WRITER On Oct. 10 and 11, Clarion University’s planetarium hosted its first session of Stars Over Clarion, an educational and fun show open to the public and students. Shows beginning at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. allowed children to see makeshift stars before bedtime and many got their chance to see the inside of the starry dome.

Spectators of all ages were immersed into the reaches of the solar system.

The planetarium is directed by Dr. Sharon Montgomery, professor of physics.

The shows, directed by head volunteer Gary Purinton, ran about an hour. After the second session on Oct. 10, Purinton led spectators outside into the parking lot behind the STC to get a glimpse of a few planets through a highpowered telescope.

James Sanders, head student volunteer, had set up the telescope during the show.

Unfortunately, Jupitar, a planet that can be seen in the early stages of nightfall, was already gone. Saturn, however,

was observable, and spectators were given an incredibly detailed look at the ringed planet.

The moon also had its chance in the spotlight.

Despite the harsh chill, spectators enjoyed the amazing view and got more chances to ask about telescopes and such.

Each session began with the lights being carefully dimmed before eventually immersing the spectators in complete darkness, aside from the lights from the stars. During the session, participants were taught that the North Star, Polaris, named for its position always being north, is not actually the brightest star in the sky. The Big Dipper and Little Dipper are also not official constellations, but actually parts of the constellations Ursa Major, the Big Bear, and Ursa Minor, the Little Bear respectively. The Dippers are formations known as asterisms and are essentially smaller and more well-seen pattern of stars. While the difference between a constellation and asterism can become confusing, A star many may have noticed burns

bright blue in the sky sometimes is called Vega, its color being a testament to just how hot the star is burning.

Vega is a part of the constellation Lyra and is also one of the three stars that make up the Summer Triangle.

Incredibly strange, the Summer Triangle is best seen at this time of year and not summer, and some refer to it as the Summer-Fall Triangle.

Another bright speck in the sky aside from the Triangle’s points is Jupiter, which appears just after the sun sets, and Saturn, which is around nearly all the time.

All constellations have backstories that vary from culture to culture, but the most popular background is

from Greek mythology.

Stories such as Cassiopeia the Queen and her constellation of her upside-down throne, her punishment for being so vain.

Her husband with a similar constellation, is intertwined with the story of Andromeda, their princess daughter whom they attempted to sacrifice to Poseidon, and a sea monster summoned to punish Cassiopeia for comparing her beauty to the sea nymphs. Perseus saved Andromeda from the sea monster by using the head of Medusa, whom he had slain earlier, to turn the creature to stone.

Andromeda and Perseus later married, as the legend goes. A star in the Great Square of

Pegasus is Andromeda’s head, making them two of the few constellations to share a star. The Andromeda Galaxy, settled just next to said constellation, can be noticed as a cloudy blur when no directly looked at. Each constellation has its own story, and all are very interesting and brow-raising tales.

Stars Over Clarion offered a well-taught and directed educational and fun view into astronomy. The sessions were beautiful, insightful and humorous as the minutes went by.

The planetarium hosts sessions on Nov. 14 and 15, and Dec. 5 this semester.

Mental health days included in school curriculum

Heather Goldfarb WRITER There are so many reasons why taking a mental health day is important. Last week, on Oct. 10, was World Mental Health Day. World Mental Health day raises awareness of mental health issues around the world to increase knowledge of and help support mental health. It is important that we look after our mental health.

Stress is a large and common area of mental health. It is the emotional strain and

tension that builds up and it has many biological factors too.

Overall, stress is the body’s reaction to challenges.

After a while, experiencing many environmental factors can create stress.

This can happen from participating in the same routine every day, which can develop into burnout.

Burnout can be really bad for mental health as it can lead to depression, anxiety and long-term effects on our minds and bodies. There are some ways we can prevent, or at least try to prevent, this from happening and save ourselves from damage over a period of time.

So, there is now a debate about whether or not mental health days should be included in

school’s curriculum. I, personally, think they should be included in high school and college’s curriculum.

I especially think it should be mandatory for high school students to be given 3 days each school year to take off for their mental health.

High schoolers are under too much pressure. Each year of high school has many obstacles that teens face. I know many teens around the ages of 14 to 18 years old from being involved with a youth group. Some of them wake up at 6 a.m. each morning and do not go to bed until 2 a.m.

They have so many responsibilities including clubs, sports, extracurriculars, class work in school, homework, maintaining friendships and family

life. They don’t have any time to themselves, for themselves. These teens are responsible for so many things in their daily life and for their future.

All the while, they are still developing and growing up and should not have to deal with or face the amount of issues that they do, because they are still children. It is important to maintain a healthy balance. They need to still attend school and complete their homework, but it also is important they take time to have fun or relax.

Not taking care of their mental health can lead to serious problems and major deterioration.

So, overall, I think it is necessary for high school students in particular to be able to have mental health days.

They need to be able to have a day to themselves to destress, relax, or do whatever they need to do. They need to be able to have a free day to themselves, meaning an excused absence with no questions asked.

There are many ways to destress. Even small simple things like reading a book, taking a nap, being active or talking about feelings can help reduce stress. I think it is necessary for everyone – not just high schoolers but everyone – to be able to find out what it is that they need to be able to take care of their mental health, even if it means having 3 days of the year to themselves.

College doesn’t have to be the only option

Courtney Kelly EDITOR IN CHIEF College. Many of us here are obviously enrolled. We are taught to believe college is the best and only route if someone wants to have a successful future.

I am sure everyone has been given this advice at least once in their life: “keep your grades up, get into a good college, get a good degree” from either a parent or teacher.

For years, students are taught the only way to succeed in life is to go to college, get a degree and get a job with that piece of paper.

Obviously so, according to the National Center for Educational Statistics someone with a bachelor’s degree was reported for an average of an income $16,900 more than someone with a high school diploma. However, it is not taken into count the increasingly high cost of higher education.

College is not the only option. There are so many students in high school who are only there because they have to be, but they are not interested in “formal education.”

They are not “lazy” or “careless” like so many

depict these students to be. They have skills and interests outside of “normal education.”

Careers are not guaranteed.

College is definitely not for everyone and there is nothing wrong with that. There are so many other options such as trade schools or vocational schools.

Vocational schools are a type of educational institute where its students are taught technical skills for a specific job.

It is about time people stop judging and looking down on people who go this route. Anyone who is willing to further their skills and knowledge, whether it be following the traditional route to college or going to a

trade school, is amazing is my eyes. One education is not better than another.

While this opinion might seem a little strange to have coming from a current senior college student, it’s important for people to know there is nothing wrong with not going to college. The stigma needs to be broken in thinking college is the only answer outside of high school.

While I do not believe people must go to college, I am not advocating for doing nothing and just staying on your parent’s couch. The “normal” higher education route might not be for everyone. Like I mentioned, vocational schools are beginning to gain more traction.

Even more high schools are adopting this new education.

The high school I graduated from just recently completed updated the career tech programs. They not only expanded the already existing ones but added so many more. It gives the students the opportunity to become educated in their craft without being buried under college debt.

I am not knocking going to college, I just think the alternatives need to be discussed more. Everyone is different and everyone learns in different ways.

They just have to be willing to go for it, and I will support anyone with that drive no matter which path they choose.

This semester brought a new Greek advisor Doug Tatters

As another academic year approaches for Clarion University, new changes to student affairs impact the campus community.

Kelly Ryan was recently appointed as the temporary Greek Advisor for the 2019-20 school year. The previous advisor was a new hire for the position and left without notice in the middle of July. Ryan was transferred to the position just three days after the academic year began. She has previous experience working with Greek life, specifically the sororities, in years past.

“Greek life on campus is something that I always admired,” Ryan said. “It amazes me that groups of individuals can come together and create such a welcoming environment.”

She has worked for the university since 2006 and has seen many students come and go with new ideas being implemented into the growing

community.

“Greek life at Clarion is different compared to other schools,” Ryan said. “There is just something about the overall friendliness and acceptance that makes it stand out as its own unique entity.” Ryan has

hopes to help recruit and attract more individuals into the Greek community at Clarion. She wants to highlight all of the good these organizations do. Whether it is fundraising or philanthropy, there is always something going on that can help to benefit the

community.

Ryan said she does not like the idea of “fixing” something. She prefers to focus more on the terms “growing” and “expanding” instead.

When it comes to Greek life, she plans on focusing on expanding and

SSA voices their opinion on vandilism Eli Clark WRITER The Secular Student Alliance (SSA) has been receiving backlash from students after promoting the club with chalkings around Clarion Campus.

The SSA began promoting club meetings via chalkings on sidewalks around campus last month and were greeted with backlash from students. The chalkings, with phrases like “What if you’re wrong?,” were in almost every area of campus and offended many students. Christo Park, a sophomore accounting major, has no problem with the SSA as a club, but feels that their chalkings were over the top and off putting.

“I just think that maybe they could tone it down just a tad bit,” said Park. His views mirror that of many on campus, however, others have taken their distaste of the chalkings to another level.Almost as soon as the chalkings were made, vandalism began.

Some students even got their own chalk and began altering the SSA’s messages to have pro-Christian themes instead of the secular themes they originally contained.

Entirely new counter chalkings have begun popping up on campus in opposition of the SSA as well. They often state that Clarion campus is specifically a Christian campus and that the SSA is trying to bring the devil and satanism to Clarion.

These counter chalkings have even spread off campus to places like Walmart, ALDI supermarket and the mall. As a result of the vandalism, the SSA has met with university officials to discuss possible solutions and punishments for the vandals. While the university has not found any leads yet, it has vowed to check security cameras around campus to possibly iden-

tify any of the perpetrators.

The SSA has always received criticism on campus, but the backlash has been much worse this year according to club president Heather Swanson.

“I don’t think we’ve ever gotten actual responses around campus ... That was something new,” said Swanson.

Aside from the vandalism and counter chalkings, the club has had opposition show up to their meetings. Two people showed up to a club

meeting to voice their displeasure with the group’s messages.

They stood up halfway through the meeting and proclaimed that they hated the group so much that they vandalized one of their chalkings. In response to the criticism of their chalkings being over the top, the club agreed and noted that they made them over the top on purpose.

“We’re not going to tone it down,” said Swanson.

“We would encourage everyone else to step

it up. People should be happy that clubs are being over the top and proud of what they’re doing on campus.”

Swanson and others in the group stressed that it is everyone’s campus and recognized that people do not have to agree with the club, but asked that students do not vandalize. Despite all the controversy surrounding the club, the SSA continues to gain new members and does not plan on changing any time soon.

Court’s Kitchen: Mini bell pepper nachos Courtney Kelly EDITOR IN CHIEF

Now that the weather is actually starting to get colder, people tend to spend more time indoors.

While passing the time indoors, the most common thing to do is snack; it is important to, every now and again, be consciences of the kinds of snacks consumed.

Keeping with the savory trend, this week on the menu are “Nachos” with a twist. Instead of the regular version of nachos with the tortilla chips and loaded top-

pings everyone is used to, these are a healthy alternative to nachos using bell peppers and ground turkey.

Don’t knock this recipe until it has been tried.

This low-carb snack is an absolute delicious game changer. They are perfect for a football Sunday snack, without all the carbohydrates and high cholesterol.

Prior to beginning this recipe, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a large baking sheet with either parchment paper or aluminum foil.

Lightly spray the lined baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray;

nothing is worse than trying to peel parchment paper off a juicy roasted pepper.

In a fry pan or skillet add enough vegetable oil in the pan to coat the bottom. Toss in ¼ cup of minced onion, one clove of minced garlic and one tablespoon of chopped cilantro or parsley, cook’s choice.

Note: to mince the onion and garlic is a fancy way of saying to finely chop up. It is important to properly mince because the finer the onion and garlic are chopped, the more prominent the flavor will be in the finished product.

Also, it is important to note that a clove of garlic is not the whole head of garlic sold at the store; a clove is just a piece of the head.

Let the onion mixture brown; this should take about two to three minutes.

Once that is nice and brown, add in one pound of ground turkey, one teaspoon of salt, one teaspoon of garlic powder and one teaspoon of cumin.

Continuously, stir this mixture around until the meat is fully cooked. The ground turkey should be 165 degrees for it to be safely consumed. It will completely loose its pink

hue and turn brown.

When fully cooked – use a food thermometer to be absolutely accurate.

It should take about six to eight minutes for the meat to cook thoroughly.

Once the meat is completely cooked, add in ¼ cup of tomato sauce and ¼ cup of chicken broth.

Mix all the ingredients well together and let the pan simmer on a medium heat for about eight minutes. After this is done remove the mixture from the heat and let it sit while the next step is prepared.

For the next step, take the mini peppers, cut them in half and remove the seeds. Place the sliced peppers cut side facing up in a single layer close together on the prepared baking sheet.

Once the peppers are arranged on the baking sheet, fill the peppers up with the ground turkey mixture that was set aside.

Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese, or any other kind of shredded cheese, on top.

Now this is the fun part of this recipe: the toppings!

This step will probably be different for everyone who makes the recipe. It just depends on what the cook prefers on nachos.

The original recipe just calls for the cheese and jalapeno slices.

But, for this time, I added one diced tomato and about one tablespoon of guacamole, give or take depending on how much guacamole is preferred. Once the desired toppings are done, place the baking sheet in the oven for about ten minutes, or until the cheese is completely melted.

Remove from the oven and spread two tablespoons of sliced black olives and ¼ cup of cilantro leaves onto of the freshly cooked stuffed peppers. Drizzle sour cream and salsa overtop for taste.

Then serve them fresh out of the oven.

If the cook wanted to make a full meal out of this recipe, instead of using the mini peppers cut full sized peppers in half. Also boil some rice and mix it into the meat mixture. Enjoy!

Another successful CU Day of Service

Olivia Johnson WRITER CU Day of Service On Saturday, Oct. 12 students from different organizations around Clarion University gathered in the Gemmell Food court to get ready for a day full of volunteering at “CU Day of Service.”

This year there were 103 volunteers who participated in the event.

The event lasted from the 9 a.m. check-in until around 1 p.m. The event kicked off with the registration where there were breakfast refreshments available for all the volunteers to enjoy.

While everyone was getting ready to go to their sites, the organizer of the event gave a short speech telling volunteers about the Advisory Board for Leadership and Engagement (ABLE) and thanking them for participating.

There were 16 different organizations that had volunteers dispersed to them.

The Clarion Community Garden was just one of the organizations participating. At the Clarion Community Garden, volunteers spent their time taking up the seasonal plants that had been planted in the spring. Some volunteers

went to Reinhard Villages and did a garbage pick-up throughout the area.

The Clarion Free Library was another organization that volunteers went to, they helped with dusting the tops of the book stacks and making sure the tension rods behind the DVDs were in place, making sure they remained visible and were not pushed to the back of the bookshelf. Volunteers with CU Day of Service helped out at several sites within the community.

Each organization

offered different tasks for the volunteers to take part in. Some organizations required work done inside their facilities while others had volunteers working outside.

The event was flexible and volunteers got to choose where they went for the day. Each volunteer group had a group leader whowould act as the main contact with the organizer. They were tasked with making sure things ran smoothly at each site.

At the close of the event, ABLE provided lunch forthe volunteers which they could either

enjoy together or take with them. CU Day of Service was a great day for members from all diverse groups around the Clarion University campus to come together and make a difference in the community. The event allows students to play an active role in the community outside of the university and make an impact in their environment. Having a relationship established between the community and the Clarion University students is important because, after all, they are coexisting.

is just one of the many events that aid in this relationship. The entire event was sponsored by ABLE, a group oriented around service and leadership. The motto of ABLE is, “able to lead, able to serve,” and its main focus is the needs of the community and students. new programs are developed as well as old programs are changed to fit those needs. Throughout the year, ABLE also holds a variety of otherevents including the kids Halloween party, the Leaders in Action Conference and Come Together.

“Breaking Bad” franchise closes with “El Camino” movie after six years Jason Phox WRITER “Breaking Bad” fans were excited when the news a movie was in production arrived back in January and have waited patiently for its release with hope it will answer all the questions they had since the series ended back in 2013.

However, that wait was over on Oct. 11 when Netflix released “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.”

The Movie was directed by the same person who directed and created the television series, Vince Gilligan.

“El Camino,” takes place directly after the events of the series finale, is set in 2010 and the audience watches as the film follows Jesse Pinkman, played by Emmy-winner Aaron Paul, as he tries to escape find a way to flee from Albuquerque and start his life over. As the plot counties, Jesse has to use his tormented past to help him escape.

The movie has been receiving positive re-

views from critics since its release. A writer for the Verge, Liz Shannon Miller, wrote in her review of “El Camino” that Gilligan did a good job capturing the emotion of certain scenes just by how he had it filmed with certain lighting and music. However, Miller wrote that “it’s deliberately designed to be enjoyed by viewers with top notch recollection of Breaking Bad.” The movie uses references and characters from the television series

that fans are delighted to see back in this movie.

Miller, and other critics, have also been praising Paul’s performance in the film.

Even though the television series ended nearly six years ago, Paul’s performance as Jesse in “El Camino” is as if he never took a break from the role. Miller wrote that his acting in the movie is a great portrayal of a young man who kept going down the wrong paths of life and is dealing with the out-

come and trauma.

Even with the positive response from fans and critics, people such as writer for IGN, David Griffin, have noticed that Gilligan did not use any type of effect of software to de-age the characters in the movie.

Griffin reported in his review that “because the series ended six years ago and these actors are portraying their respective characters as if no time has passed, their physical appearance can be a bit distracting.”

Griffin also goes on to explain that the use of any de-aging effect would make the movie look less serious and that this personal concern does not stop him from enjoying “El Camino.”

Six years after “Breaking Bad” ended, the fanbase still got excited about “El Camino” as if the television series never ended.

Paul still gives an outstanding performance as Jesse and helped to provide the respectful sendoff for the series.

Dizzee Rascal’s “Boy in Da Corner” continues to influence grime music Leon Aristeguieta WRITER Once in a while, in all genres of music, a seminal album comes along.

This album does more than any other to define the sound of that genre.

It lays the foundations on which the next generation’s worth of records and songs will be built on.

Miles Davis’s “Kind of Blue” was the much-needed reaction to the bebop that dominated jazz during the late 40s and 50s, eschewing complexity for modality, coolness, and understatement.

“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” by The Beatles defined the sound of pop music for the counterculture generation of the late 60s and bridged the gap that existed between the worlds of art and popular music. Nas’ “Illmatic” is filled with vivid imagery and graphic storytelling of daring escapades and real-life situations which one

was liable to find growing up in inner city New York during the 70s and 80s.

For Grime music, the English child of UK garage and jungle dance music with influences from American hiphop, Dizzee Rascal’s 2003 debut “Boy in Da Corner” is that seminal album. Never before had listeners tuned in to something so visceral and raw, depicting through its beats and lyrics the “other” side of society, the one that most people do not talk about.

In the early 2000s grime music was far outside the mainstream consciousness in England, it did not even have a name. “Boy in Da Corner” was in a sense, a reaction to the polished and manicured music that dominated the charts at the time.

What set the album apart from others at the time was how different it sounded. Grounded in a UK garage foundation, Rascal kept

the fast tempo and electronic sounds, but created music that was purposefully violent and confrontational.

First time listeners are shocked by the energy emanating from the music. It is compelling and chaotic at the same time. Discordant drums and vocal samples mix with grumbling, low-frequency basses, as on the album’s second track “Stop Dat.” Each song is banger, to use a colloquialism; it is turn up music at its finest, possessing the ability to bring people to both the dance floor due to its roots in electronic dance music, as well as the mosh pit because of the maddening amounts of energy that flow through it.

These emotions are helped along by Rascal’s inimitable vocals. They are high-pitched, but incredibly aggressive, full of youth and vigor, nearing shouting at some points. This does not let up for the entire album, and in each song

his performance more than anything takes center stage.

Dizzee Rascal did not grow up in the best circumstances: his early life consisted of getting expelled from various schools and general trouble making. He lived in East London, his father died when he was young and was raised by his single mother.

This is all reflected in his lyrical content, which paints a dreary and striking picture of the environment he lived in. It was not all fun and games, and there was constant distractions and dangers that he had to look out for. In one of the slower cuts from the album, “Brand New Day” he raps “Looks like I’m losing mates, there’s a lot of hostility near my gates/We used to fight with kids from other estates,/now eight millimeters settle debates.”

Part of what makes “Boy in Da Corner” so exceptional is how young Dizzee Rascal

was when he made it.

The first single from the album, “I Luv U” was produced and recorded in 2002, when he was 16 years old. This is even more striking when one listens to the lyrics, hearing stories about failed relationships and teen pregnancy.

“Boy in Da Corner” received near universal acclaim following its release. Critics lauded it as a triumph of the youth and described it as the future of music. It won Rascal the Mercury Prize in 2003, an annual award for the best album in the United Kingdom and Ireland, making him the second rapper to win the award. In total, its legacy cannot be understated. It has had massive influence on grime music and launched Rascal to stardom. It resonates with today’s youth as it did back then and can be looked as a defining record which set the stage for the 17 years of grime music since.

Robert Forster, Oscar nominee for “Jackie Brown” dies at 78

ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES (AP) — Robert Forster, the handsome and omnipresent character actor who got a career resurgence and Oscar nomination for playing bail bondsman Max Cherry in “Jackie Brown,” died Friday. He was 78.

Publicist Kathie Berlin said Forster died of brain cancer following a brief illness. He was at home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, including his four children and partner Denise Grayson.

Condolences poured in Friday night on social media.

Bryan Cranston called Forster a “lovely man and a consummate actor” in a tweet. The two met on the 1980 film “Alligator” and then worked together again on the television show “Breaking Bad” and its spinoff film, “El Camino,” which launched Friday on Netflix.

“I never forgot how kind and generous he was to a young kid just starting out in Hollywood,” Cranston wrote.

His “Jackie Brown” costar Samuel L. Jackson tweeted that Forster was “truly a class act/Actor!!”

A native of Rochester, New York, Forster quite literally stumbled into acting when in college, intending to be a lawyer, he followed a fellow female student he was trying to talk to into an auditorium where “Bye Bye Birdie” auditions were being held. He would be cast in that show, that fellow student would become his wife with whom he had three daughters, and it would start him on a new trajectory as an actor.

A fortuitous role in the 1965 Broadway production “Mrs. Dally Has a Lover” put him on the radar of Darryl Zanuck, who signed him to a studio contract. He would soon make his film debut in the 1967 John Huston film “Reflections in a Golden Eye,” which starred Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor.

Forster would go on to star in Haskell Wexler’s documentary-style Chicago classic “Medium Cool” and the detective television series “Banyon.” It was an early high point that he would later say was the beginning of a “27-year slump.”

He worked consistently throughout the 1970s and 1980s in mostly forget-

table B-movies — ultimately appearing in over 100 films, many out of necessity.

“I had four kids, I took any job I could get,” he said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune last year. “Every time it reached a lower level I thought I could tolerate, it dropped some more, and then some more. Near the end, I had no agent, no manager, no lawyer, no nothing. I was taking whatever fell through the cracks.”

It was Quentin Tarantino’s 1997 film “Jackie Brown” that put him back on the map. Tarantino created the role of Max Cherry with Forster in mind — the actor had unsuccessfully auditioned for a part in “Reservoir Dogs,” but the director promised not to forget him.

In an interview with Fandor last year, Forster recalled that when presented with the script for “Jackie Brown,” he told Tarantino, “I’m sure they’re not going to let you hire me.”

Tarantino replied: “I hire anybody I want.”

“And that’s when I realized I was going to get another shot at a career,” Forster said. “He gave

me a career back and the last 14 years have been fabulous.”

The performance opposite Pam Grier became one of the more heartwarming Hollywood comeback stories, earning him his first and only Academy Award nomination. He ultimately lost the golden statuette to Robin Williams, who won that year for “Good Will Hunting.”

After “Jackie Brown,” he worked consistently and at a decidedly higher level than during the “slump,” appearing in films like David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive,” ‘’Me, Myself and Irene,” ‘’The Descendants,” ‘’Olympus Has Fallen,” and “What They Had,” and in television shows like “Breaking Bad” and the “Twin Peaks” revival.

He said he loved trying

out comedy as Tim Allen’s father in “Last Man Standing.”

He’ll also appear later this year in the Steven Spielberg-produced Apple+ series “Amazing Stories.”

Even in his down days, Forster always considered himself lucky.

“You learn to take whatever jobs there are and make the best you can out of whatever you’ve got. And anyone in any walk of life, if they can figure that out, has a lot better finish than those who cannot stand to take a picture that doesn’t pay you as much or isn’t as good as the last one,” he told IndieWire in 2011.

“Attitude is everything.”

Forster is survived by his four children, four grandchildren and Grayson, his partner of 16 years.

Clarion football takes 35-20 loss against Cal. U Austin Troutman WRITER

After a big 42-16 win on Oct. 5, the Clarion Golden Eagles football team travelled to California University of Pennsylvania (Cal. U) for a late afternoon game on Oct. 12.

Clarion entered play with a record of 3-2 and looked to carry over some success from its conference rival victory a week prior.

Cal. U came into play with a 3-2 record and a 1-1 mark against PSAC rivals.

First quarter action witnessed 21 total points, as Clarion fell behind early on a 33-yard touchdown pass.

The Golden Eagles answered with two scores of its own.

With 7:44 left in the first, Clarion quarterback Jeff Clemens connected with Jacob Whitenight on a six-yard touchdown pass.

At the 4:47 mark, Golden Eagles’ kicker James Metzgar sent a 37-yard field goal through the uprights to take the lead 10-7.

Cal. U came back in the second quarter, however, as it reached the end zone twice on a two-yard run and a three-yard pass.

The first half concluded, and Clarion fell behind 21-10.

With one half to play, the Golden Eagles pushed to come back, but Cal. U had something else in mind.

Metzgar added three points to

start the second half to create a one possession game.

Cal. U reached the end zone with 31 seconds left in the third quarter on a four-yard passing touchdown for a 15-point lead.

Another 15-yard passing touchdown for Cal. U with 6:13 left in the final quarter virtually put the game away.

Clemens put up the game’s final score with a 28-yard passing touchdown to Kahliq Muhammad to conclude a 74-yard drive.

The Golden Eagles fell 35-20 in the late afternoon game on the road, falling to a 3-3 record.

Against conference opponents, Clarion dropped to 1-2.

Top performers in the game were Clemens, Muhammad and Scott Florence.

Clemens went 25-44 in passing attempts, throwing for 254 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and a long pass of 44 yards.

During the game, Clemens was only sacked twice.

Florence was Clarion’s leading rusher with 13 carries for 37 yards and a long play of eight yards.

Muhammad led Golden Eagle receiving with 107 yards on six receptions and one touchdown.

His long play was 44 yards.

Metzgar was 2-3 in field goals with kicks from 30 and 37 yards.

Clarion’s next game is one of the toughest on the season against Indiana University of Pennsylvania at Memorial Stadium.

The game is scheduled for a

noon kickoff on Oct. 19.

IUP is 5-1 on the season with its only loss coming against Slippery Rock on the road in a 45-42 shootout in its last game on Oct. 12.

After the game against IUP,

the Golden Eagles have one remaining home game on the schedule, Nov. 9 at noon against Mercyhurst University.

Although Clarion has a tough upcoming opponent, it will seek to avoid falling under .500 for

the first time this season.

A strong home performance could keep Clarion close against one of the best teams in the conference.

Who will win the 2019 World Series?

In my previous MLB prediction article, I had the Astros winning the World Series, and I may have written off the Nationals.

Now, Washington has punched its ticket to the World Series, and it awaits its opponent at the end of the ALCS. The team has shown a lot of promise, but can they sustain it for one more series?

When we dive into the possible opponents, it may not be as clear for some to choose.

Washington will either face the Astros or the Yan-

kees and, with at least two games to go, the Nationals have some days to rest before the Fall Classic.

Coming into the postseason, people were avoiding choosing Washington to go deep into the playoffs because of a bad bullpen.

However, the team used the starting pitching more than anything to push past the Dodgers and Cardinals.

Between Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Patrick Corbin and Anibal Sanchez, the Cardinals scored six runs in four games.

Daniel Hudson has been closing postseason games in the back of the bullpen with Sean Doolittle as his setup man.

The team has shown that it is not afraid to use starters out of the bullpen in order to win games, and it is a successful strategy.

Washington is on to its first World Series as the Nationals organization and, no matter who wins in the ALCS, it will be on the road in game one.

How do they match up?

Against New York, one might argue that Washington’s rotation is better, but the lineup and bullpen favor the Yankees.

Against Houston, it is more of the same.

If the Nationals can win one of the first two games, however, it will get three games in D.C. to try to

capture a series lead or the championship.

At this point in the season, I believe Washington has a legitimate shot to take down either one of the American League opponents.

I still think Houston is the favorite to win it all, but the Nationals could make it a close series by neutralizing two, possibly three of the best Astros pitchers.

With Sanchez emerging as a postseason ace, it can make a large difference in game four if he can continue his success.

If the ALCS moves to more than five games which looks like a major possibility, the Nationals can be rested enough to set its rotation the

exact way it wants to.

The American League winner, on the other hand, may have to use all its great pitchers on short rest and then rebound to play the final series of the season.

Although the top team in the National League by record was not represented in the 2019 World Series, it is still shaping up for quite the exciting conclusion.

No matter who wins the AL bracket, it is safe to assume that the Fall Classic will be unique, exciting, interesting and intriguing.

Game one begins on Oct. 22 on FOX, the winner will be crowned World Champions.

Golden Eagle hockey loses 7-3 to CCAC

Monica Humes SPORTS EDITOR The Golden Eagle inline hockey team traveled to Pittsburgh last Wednesday to take on CCAC. Clarion put up a good fight but ended up losing 7-3.

Luckily, the team still has several more weeks to redeem themselves and hopefully see a win for Clarion.

This season, the hockey team has 4 new members, after losing only one to graduation.

Although they have faced some tough losses so far this season, the Golden Eagles have given some nice performances on the ice.

The older members were skeptical of how the first game would go, but everyone came out hard and proved themselves on the rink.

The Golden Eagles will take on CCAC Oct. 9 at 10:30 p.m. All games are played at Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Complex.

Column: Clumsy words tarnish the LeBron brand ASSOCIATED PRESS LeBron James had time, and plenty of it, to figure out how best to answer the questions he knew were coming. Long days in hotel rooms in China and a long flight home gave him every chance to carefully craft a response to a controversy he had no part in making but one that directly affects his bank account. Instead James chose to wing it. He blamed the messenger instead of addressing the message.

And the LeBron brand may never be the same.

He’s still one of the greatest basketball players ever, that hasn’t changed. But in the space of just a few sentences Monday night James may have abdicated his spot as someone who should be listened carefully to when it comes to social issues.

No one was asking James to come out in support of protesters in Hong Kong. That was always a bridge too far for a player who makes millions in the lucrative Chinese market.

But a player who has always prided himself on speaking out on issues ranging from Trayvon Martin to Colin Kaepernick should have made sure in this instance that he was speaking out the strongest in support of free speech.

James didn’t, at least when it comes to Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey and the firestorm Morey set off with his tweet in support of Hong Kong protesters. In his first comments since returning from China, James cast Morey as being “either misinformed or not really educated on the situation” in Hong Kong and not understanding how many people in the NBA could be affected by his tweet.

While James mentioned free speech, in his bungled attempt to chastise Morey what people heard was human rights are great. But don’t let them get in the way of the NBA’s China cash cow. The words were clumsy, almost as if James himself was misinformed or not really educated on the situation.

Seemingly realizing that, James followed them with a pair of tweets that did little other than rile up people even further on social media.

He also riled up some protesters in Hong Kong, where on Tuesday some were seen stomping on — and in one case — burning his jersey.

Not exactly the way James wanted to start the NBA season.

Up until a few days ago, the biggest thing James had to worry about was meshing with new teammate Anthony Davis and finding a way for his Los Angeles Lakers to beat the Golden State Warriors.

Now he’s under fire from both sides in a dispute he had no part in making, but one where he will pay a price — and not just in endorsement opportunities in China. No one expects James to be an expert on the dispute in Hong Kong, where protesters are chafing under increased Chinese control. But they should expect him to do what NBA Commissioner Adam Silver did last week in China — acknowledge that everyone doesn’t look at things the same but that everyone has the right to express their opinion and just leave it at that.

Those opinions

were hard to find across the NBA on Tuesday, a week before the opening of the 2019 season. That was especially true in Houston where Morey has yet to resurface and players like James Harden and Tyson Chandler joined coach Mike D’Antoni in either declining comment or saying basically nothing. Even Steve Kerr, the Warriors coach who has an opinion on most issues of the day and seems to relish sparring with President Donald Trump, is keeping relatively quiet. Kerr demurred last week when asked whether he thought Morey was wrong in sending out the tweet, saying instead that basketball “should be a force for the greater good.”

That earned Kerr a tweet from Trump, who said it was “So funny to watch Steve Kerr grovel and pander when asked a simple question about China.”

Indeed, James is not the only one caught in a heated dispute where middle ground will be

hard — if not impossible — to find. He’s not the only one who stands to lose money — and a lot of it — should the damage to a relationship carefully cultivated over three decades be undone by a Friday night tweet.

He’s got a right to market himself in China without getting involved in the country’s internal politics, and that’s fine. Few begrudge James his millions, and few — at least on this side of the world — are particularly interested in what he thinks about the relationship Hong Kong has with China.

Words matter, though, and so does the right to voice them.

Free speech may be an empty concept in China, but it’s the very bedrock of democracy in the United States.

Like a lot of us, James is lucky to live in a country where that right is a given.

Hopefully he’ll be thinking more about that the next time he speaks up.
