Students engage with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths at this years Big Bang Day. On the 4th July the science department held its 3rd annual Big Bang Day, in association with STEMNET. We were lucky enough to have over 25 ambassadors from a variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects in running workshops all day. The Ponds Project and London Metropolitan Archives were familiar faces from last year and ran engaging workshops making recycled water gardens and ice cream. Patent attorneys from Beck Greener put the students’ analytical thinking to the test by seeing if they could patent everyday items. Year 8 and 9 students designed, wired, raced and crashed battery-powered cars. Middlesex University tested the students’ robot programming skills (below); the Royal Veterinary College had students preparing blood samples for microscopes (Left); Queen Mary University challenged students to mathematically workout how many sweets were in a jar; and London Metropolitan University got students scratching their heads as they tackled STEM problem solvers.
As well as thought-provoking workshops, students were encouraged to consider a future in STEM careers. Over 10 STEM ambassadors from industries as varied as the NHS, Save the Children and Transport for London participated in a speed networking activity, with over 100 students throughout the day. The day was rounded off in the theatre, with a guest appearance from TV personality and science communicator Dr Emily Grossman (below) in front of 150 year 9 students. In her weird and wonderful science talk she showed them how to block a tickle, how to properly mix hot and cold water in a bath and how to get the most milk out of a cow.
The science department would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who volunteered, facilitated and accommodated our requests to make this the most successful Big Bang yet; Ms Ribbands, Ms Ball, Ms Jones, Mr Keane, the reception staff and the facilities team.
