The Market is Open! In light of National Numeracy Day, KPMG reached out to some students at the City Academy, to witness the celebratory opening of the stock exchange market. Poor numeracy levels in the UK is estimated to cost the UK economy £20.2bn a year. It is a day to raise awareness of the benefits of good numeracy and to create greater understanding of what numeracy means. Students woke up to see London at its waking hour. This was followed by a networking breakfast, with the chance to speak to senior executives and take in the experience, insight and information they need to step forward in the world of work. As the eighth hour of the day drew closer, students lined up at the upper balcony of the stock exchange to spectate the opening with news outlets such as ITV capturing the sensational unveiling and entrancing visual effects. One student said: “The London Stock Exchange was a welcoming experience. Meeting new people and listening to their experiences broadened my understanding. The opportunities they offered were valuable and appealing. The market opening was an eye-opener. It was an exclusive occasion that was not to be missed!” It is important to note that the purpose of this is to magnify and intervene in improving the UK’s numeracy levels. Whilst the UK has made progress in literacy levels, numeracy levels have taken a U-turn. The first step would be to demystify the myth that numeracy skills are only relevant in science-based subjects. Simon Gallacher, Head of Quantitative Skills at the Nuffield Foundation, has echoed the significance of numeracy skills, “They are vital in subjects other that maths and science. Subjects such as politics, geography and econom-

ics require quantitative skills. We have established Q-Step to help train students in quantitative skills.” Overall, students were satisfied and delighted with the experience and understand why it is fundamental to be equipped with good numeracy skills. It contributes in developing your employability skills as well as helping individuals develop logical thinking and reasoning strategies which often overlaps with many activities that fall into our day to day lives.
