The City Academy, Hackney top performing school in the borough This term, The City Academy, Hackney made appearances in both The Times and The Hackney Gazette due to its top performing status.

Figures released by the Department for Education (DfE) show that 60.4 percent of secondary schools in Hackney achieved 5 GCSEs from grades A* to C, including English and maths - an impressive figure when compared to the National Average of 54 percent. The City Academy, Hackney came in considerably higher however, with 73 percent of students leaving the academy with the same results.

“We also have the best average GCSE grade of any school in Hackney and the best GCSE average points score which placed us as the top school in Hackney in ‘The Times’ good schools near you table.”

The City Academy, Hackney also comes within the top five schools in the country for levels of progress made. Speaking about the academy’s high performing status, Mr Emmerson said “I am very pleased about the excellent progress being made at The City Academy.

He also looked ahead to even better results next year, adding: “If we look forward to the new progress 8 measure that will be used next year and apply that measure to our 2015 results we are actually placed two places higher as the third best school in the country.”

“We look forward to our next set of results and are hopeful that our first set of A level results will replicate that exceptional progress.”

PSA Parent workshop Thank you to all the parents who joined Mr Gallagher, Ms Yennaris, and Mr Miller for the PE Taster Lesson. They were able to get an insight into how a PE lesson works, and play a session of table tennis.

Netball The year 10/11 netball team have been victorious in winning the Hackney League Rowing for the fourth time in a row, also winning This year, 14 students from years 7 - 11 took the London League with two players being part in the National Junior Indoor Rowing selected for the England Netball Regional Championships. Sports Results

World Book Day This year World Book Day was celebrated over a whole week, kicking off with staff members dressing up as their favourite character from a book or story. A record number participated, with 54 staff members dressing up as characters such as the Phantom of the Opera, Alice from Alice in Wonderland, and Professor Snape from the Harry Potter series. Students were encouraged to guess as many characters as possible, with tutor group Ludgate G identifying the most at 34.

Ms Towers, Learning Resources Manager, who organised the event felt celebrating World Book Day was useful in encouraging the students’ love of reading for pleasure: “It was lovely to see students excited about receiving their free World Book Day books and trying to work out who the staff were dressed as. It really created a buzz around books and reading.”

World Book Day is held annually in the United

Kingdom on the first Thursday of March.

Each child is given a voucher to spend on books, and it is designed to promote a love of reading, writing, and celebrate authors.

The library hosts a range of events to promote reading throughout the year such as author visits, trips, and the Accelerated Reader programme.

Sixth Form Fundraising This term, our Sixth Form students have been participating in fundraising events in order to raise enough money to hold their end of year prom.

Student Council

Outward Bound

Members of our Student Council were invited to Millfields Primary School to give a talk to the year 5 and 6 classes about keeping safe online and using social media.

Students braved the wind and the cold at the start of this term for their annual Outward Bound trip to Wales.

Students at Millfields said they found these kinds of presentations useful, as they were engaging and put these issues to the students in a different way, encouraging them to participate.

The Student Council are involved with a range of different acitivities encouraging student leadership and participation.

They were able to get involved in activities from canoeing to mountain hiking, ending each day with hot chocolate, and even spending a night in a log cabin.

Thanks to all staff, students, and parents for supporting this trip and allowing the students to take part and enjoy this experience.

So far, they have held a bake sale, raffled a Mother’s Day hamper (won by Ms Ford), and donated their time washing staff members’ cars and bikes, already raising over £300 through their efforts.

“The sixth formers are fundraising for their school prom. It is a really good chance for them to put time and effort into getting the things they want,” says Ms Tamufor, Head of Sixth Form.

The fundraising comes as the Sixth Form are starting to get ready for their AS and A level exams at the start of next term. This is our first cohort who will be sitting their A level exams and taking up their university offers this September.

Message from PC Hayley Bampton PC Hayley Bampton is the Safer Schools Officer for The City Academy, Hackney. She has written a message to all parents regarding students’ use of social media.

I am the Safer Schools Police Officer. I have worked for the police service for nearly 13 years, four of which I have spent in my current position on the Schools Team. My primary role is to work closely with staff and parents at the school to ensure that all students can attend the academy and be educated in a safe and supportive environment.

I strongly urge parents to take a proactive interest in your child’s activities and participation on social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Ask FM, Blackberry Messenger (BBM), WhatsApp, Snapchat. The majority of the work I do surrounds these kinds of websites as young people are not aware of their inappropriate use and how they can get themselves into trouble. Please ensure that if your child does use these sites that you assist them into setting their security to high.

There have been a couple of incidents recently whereby students at the academy have formed groups on these sites and have been writing inappropriate comments about others. Those involved have been spoken to by police and given advice on what is and what is not acceptable use of social media. If you do suspect that your child is involved in something similar and would like some advice, please do not hesitate to contact the school or myself.
