Autumn 1 Issue October 2017
International choir visits The City Academy. On October 2nd, we were delighted to welcome students all the way from Shanghai Qibao Dwight High. The students were part of the school’s choir and performed confidently in assembly. They went on to a music lesson and sang with our own choir, sharing vocal warm up tips. The students agreed that it was really interesting to see how the Chinese students performed, incorporating hand gestures into their singing. Our students were excited to meet some new faces and friendships became evident quickly. “As the day went on, they were becoming more confident, singing and dancing with us. During break they shared some Chinese sweets which were… interesting! After break they came to our lessons ... We all became friends and we swapped contacts. Maybe our choir could go and visit them.” Principal Mark Malcolm presented the visitors with a framed City Academy rugby shirt (pictured below) which was received enthusiastically. All in all it was a really successful day, imbuing our students with the appetite to meet others from around the world in the future.

Welcome to all the students, parents and carers at the academy and a special welcome if it is your first term. During the summer we celebrated excellent examination results at A level and GCSE. All our A level students were offered places at university or high level apprenticeships and our GCSE students once again made exceptional progress. We continue to strive for all of our students to make five grades of progress from primary school to GCSE. The academy offers students an outstanding City Experience with a curriculum that supports students’ academic, creative, linguistic, sporting and personal development. We believe that every student can achieve at the highest level. We expect students to take responsibility for their learning by participating in every activity to their best ability, by respecting each other and by acting in a courteous and professional way at all times. Our students are ready to learn when they arrive at the classroom and that means our lessons can be exciting, creative and challenging. We want to work with parents and carers to support their child’s learning and we welcome you to contact your child’s personal adviser at any time. The Autumn term has begun with colder weather than we are used to in September so it is a good opportunity to remind students that they may come to school with a plain black, short, folding umbrella. They may also wear plain black gloves and a plain black scarf when it gets even colder. These items must not have colour or logos on them. The only hat allowed is a grey academy hat. EPortal has been replaced with SIMS and parents will be able to access details of attendance, punctuality, attainment, merits, detentions and contact details in the near future.
