Artist & Designer, Osman Yousefzada says: “It’s a great honour to be commissioned to reflect on the 75 years of Pakistan’s independence. What is Seen and What is Not offers a portrait of contemporary Pakistan, through a British diasporic lens as it attempts to reel away from colonial subjugation. However, it is still a casualty of neo-colonial structures, contributing less than 1% to green gas emissions and in return it is the 5th most vulnerable country to climate change, as rising temperatures result in great floods, and an eventual loss of the Himalayan ice reservoirs, causing tremendous displacement and a loss of homeland to its people.”

The ‘What is Seen and What is Not’ installation at the Victoria & Albert Museum is open to the public from 29th July until 25th September 2022. OPENS INSTALLATION AT V&A MUSEUM

on ourRADAR OSMAN YOUSEFZADA

The series of installations respond to the 75th anniversary of Pakistan and explores themes of displacement, movement and migration. They have been commissioned by the British Council, in partnership with the V&A and the Pakistan High Commission as part of the British Council’s festival season ‘Pakistan/UK: New Perspective’. Osman’s work is a tripartite of site-specific works, and will bring together his textiles, wrapped objects and a seating installation. Together, the works present Osman’s unique and highly personal perspective on migratory experience and identity and offers a subtle and contemplative space to engage with objects rooted in the heritages of Pakistani culture. Osman developed new techniques and stitches - working on non-traditional materials, which he compliments with painting, producing a body of work reflecting on shrines and ritualised spaces of transcendence.

Maria graduated from the famous Academy of Music, Gresin Music Academy in Moscow, Russia, as well as from Berklee Music college in Boston, USA. Her self-written song won the competition for the youth anthem of the Olympic Games in Sochi and she prides in being selected by Sir Elton John among other young Russian artists to be the opening act for his big performance in Moscow. She graces our cover this month and we are thankful for her time for this exclusive interview for our readers.

Meet Maria Bulavina – the professionally trained singer. Coming from a very musically talented family, both her parents have greatly supported her in her success. Maria’s mother says that she learned to sing before walking and talking.

17 August, 2022

Firstly have lived and worked in Doha with the best hotels, as a singer, I have also worked a lot as a model with clothing brands, fashion designers and beauty brands. I arrived in Dubai at the invitation of the general manager of the hotel Habtoor Palace. I landed in Dubai in June 2019, it was my first visit to Dubai and I have joined well-known and highly respected company called Habtoor Hospitality, as a lead singer at Habtoor Palace hotel, it's been 3 years and counting.

What has been the biggest surprise so far about making music your career?

For me, motivation is always inspiration, if I want something, I always achieve it, and the more difficult the goal, the more I invest efforts to achieve what I want. I have been told "No" many times for me, the word "No" is the best motivation and opportunity. The word "No" does not mean refusal, it means "opportunity" and I never miss it. Great efforts should be backed up by strong energy and of course this is something that needs to be replenished and increased. I can work 24/7, but I'm definitely rebuilding myself. I really love the beach and the sea, I am absolutely a beach person, it charges me, gives me strength, as well as sports and I can combine sports with business, my phone is in my hand for about 17 hours a day.

18 www.theciin.com

The biggest surprise is that my song, which I wrote myself, won the competition for the youth anthem of the Olympic Games in Sochi, it was very exciting. It was also nice when Sir Elton John chose me among the young Russian artists to be the opening act for his big performance in Moscow.

What do you think motivates you day in and day out?

What has been an unexpected or welcome challenge to it all?

The biggest challenge is to bring everything together: talent, professionalism, discipline, the ability to be flexible, to be a producer, to be a sponsor, to be a director and to be a boss for yourself and for your team. At the moment I'm in charge of musicians at Firma Events and I have huge responsibility of everyone who works with me. We are one family. In our agency you won't find random ppl, these are talented and professional musicians with musical education. They are the same like me, have been making music since childhood, we have gone our separate ways to be where we are now. I bring talents from all over the world, at

Growing up, how important was music in your life? Were your family and friends supportive of this career choice? Music has always been my life, my mom says I learned to sing before walking and talking. I tried myself in different musical styles, ranging from folk folklore to real jazz and electronic music. Jazz has always been something special, something that inspired me and I still love jazz. Support always came from my family, I was so busy studying as a child that unfortunately there was no time for friends, later when I started studying there was always competition among my classmates and my family's support was enough for me, they always believed in me very much as well as now. The music industry is very cruel, it is very rare to meet friends, especially in such developed countries as Russia and America.

Tell us about your education. My education takes up more than half of my life, because I have been professionally engaged in music since I was 3 years old. My grandparents were music teachers at a music school, and my parents are famous Russian musicians and Honored Artists of Russia. I've never had any doubts about who I want to be in the future. I took talent from both parents and organizing and producing skills from my father. I graduated from the famous Academy of Music, Gresin Music Academy in Moscow, Russia, as well from Berklee Music college in Boston, USA. In total, from music school, college and academies it took 16 years of my life. Education has always been a very important part of my life, I still continue to study and develop in production and marketing in the modern world, it is necessary for every artist, because our profession is very multifaceted, so you must be multi skilled.

When and how did you land in Dubai?

Please introduce yourself to our readers.

My name is Maria Bulavina. I’m Director of Entertainment and partner at Firma Events, Doha Qatar.

19 August, 2022

20 www.theciin.com

What do you think social media has done for your career so far?

What would a dream music video look like for you? It’s hard to say, its depends of the song what its about…. Lets see in the future, now technology develops so fast and I definitely want to make something super new, let’s say video on the flying car, as I saw at Museum of the Future in Dubai.

What musicians would you absolutely love to work with in the future? Who has been inspiring you and the music that you make?

How do you think you have grown as a musician since you first started making music?

At the moment I’m working on the song which involved my colleagues, with amazing music instruments and by end of August we gonna have a video shooting at iconic hotel, my favourite Habtoor Palace. I believe is most beautiful hotel in the world. Do you have a favourite concert venue to perform in and why?

I am inspired by every artist I find, or they find me. These are unique and talented people. If we are talking about superstars, I adore and dream of, if not singing, then attending live concerts India Arie, Alicia Keys, Sam Smith, Adele.

21 August, 2022 the moment our team includes musicians from: Italy, Cuba, Russia, Colombia, Mexico, Ukraine, Argentina, America, Spain. The guys work in the best hotels and the best music venues in Qatar, Dubai, Oman, Seychelles. We are growing as a team and our venues are also growing. Now the biggest challenge for me is to become the largest international agency in the world. Which performances/recordings are you most proud of?

At the end of the day, what do you hope people take away from your music? Feelings, it is all about feelings and if I touch them with my music, means we have something similar and we understand each other.

It's entertainment for me mostly. I am too lazy to maintain constant social activity, and I also protect my personal space. I very rarely share any events of my life and family. This is my choice and I am very comfortable. It helps me a lot that you can find a lot of talented musicians on social networks, now many artists write to me on Instagram who want to work in our team, so for business, of course, yes, for personal life, no, or just a little bit, and only what I'm ready to show. I love sharing my photo shoots, photography has always been and will be my great passion

Do you hope to release more music in the coming months and an EP or album?

I will definitely highlight the Youth Anthem of the Olympic Games, the song is called "Our Success Was Born in Russia". And also the song "I remember" which was at the top of all music platforms for a while and a music video was the most professional I’ve ever had.

As a musician, what is your definition of success?

I produced quite a lot of music before I became involved in the agency, at the moment all my time is occupied by the agency and my artists, as well as my own performances and jazz evenings at the Habtoor Palace. I am looking for a quality music studio in Dubai to continue writing new songs.

For 3 years I have been singing in a wonderful place called "Polo Bar" of Habtoor Palace, luxurious jazz bar in the English style, with an incredible atmosphere and wonderful guests who appreciate jazz.

This is a combination of talent, discipline, a lot of work on yourself and, of course, self-belief.

How do you feel about social media?

binge shows right now: Voice If you weren’t a singer, you’d be: Lawyer

For Fall/Winter 2022, BOSS delves deeper into what it means to be your own BOSS with a campaign capturing a group of today’s most influential stars. Building on the incredible success of its brand refresh in early 2022, which established the new brand attitude of inspiring and empowering people to be their own BOSS, the new season sees the brand team up with a starstudded and diverse cast to explore this new attitude on an even deeper level.

EMPOWERMENT AND DETERMINATION DEFINE THE BOSS FALL/WINTER 2022 CAMPAIGN

www.theciin.com

The campaign provides the chance for meaningful, purposeful storytelling and connection with the BOSS community. Stars who inspire with their stories of what it takes to be your own BOSS take the spotlight. Nextgeneration TikTok creator Khaby Lame stars in the campaign, alongside Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini, German runner Alica Schmidt and British boxer Anthony Joshua. These global brand ambassadors, introduced in the brand refresh campaign last January, each have strategic partnerships and co-designed capsule collections with BOSS. For the first time in BOSS campaign history, 24

25 August, 2022 legendary British supermodel Naomi Campbell joins the cast. American model Kendall Jenner, world-famous American rapper Future, and South Korean singer and actor Lee Min-ho round out the luminary talents in the campaign, where they talk in their own words about what makes a BOSS.

The new campaign keeps up the momentum of the brand refresh and is part of the more comprehensive aim of the HUGO BOSS Group to boost global awareness of its brands in the context of the CLAIM 5 strategy introduced last year.

Here is where three rooms - in the brand code colors of black, white, and camel - reveal themselves. Within each one of them, we see our cast in their unique worlds. These rooms are reminders that when one door closes, another one opens. The path to being your own BOSS is not a singular straight line, but a series of trials, successes, and even failures – but there is always hope and growth on the other side. By walking through these doorways, deeper understanding begins.

BRETT JOHNSON FALL/WINTER 2022

The new fall/winter’22 collection by luxury menswear label, Brett Johnson is an amalgamation of sleek outerwear and colossal winter silhouettes that are inspired by a key period of transience in the designer’s life. Central to the collection is the narrative of bildungsroman that maps out Johnson’s journey of transition from a young adult to adult and, in particular, as a father. Taking inspiration from the impermanence of nature, Johnson conceptualized the line while walking through a wooded forest, with his children and observing the change in nature with the arrival of autumn. From the subtle nuances that the landscape takes on to the varying light patterns that pervade through the season, as the nights get longer, and the sky turns a notch paler featuring unique shades of blue. The result is a palette of earthy colors, whose spectrum embraces differing shades of green and brown of the undergrowth and the earth, as well as the warm tones of the autumn foliage and the open and suffused blue hues of the evening. As always, the materials are natural and precious, with a soft and enveloping touch. The collection features deconstructed jackets in cashmere silk, and light-weight timeless t-shirts. Coats and 72 sweaters are also in cashmere while sporty goose down jackets adopt an elegant supima cotton corduroy. Woven outerwear and leather jackets are adorned with silk & cashmere elements. Italian sartorial excellence stands out in every detail: from hand stitches and well-tailored armholes to button details. Adding a modern twist to traditional stitches and braids, the knits are reinvented for the season in new colorways. Details are essential to the collection: coats embellished with detachable knit collars, and parkas with beaver accents. Each piece keeps the processing times and the know-how of the best Italian artisan workshops. The silhouettes reflect a vision of elegance with natural comfort, deconstructed, and casual tailoring. The proportions are relaxed, jackets are worn over jogging pants. Hooded knitwear echoes a chic, yet modern appearance on sweaters. For fall/winter22, Brett Johnson has created an intimate and warm collection that pays homage to transitioning to adulthood while maintaining a young, contemporary attitude.

On entering Aman New York, guests ascend to the hotel’s 14th floor, where a double-height atrium instantly instils a sense of grandeur while connecting exceptional spaces for socialising, designed by Jean Michel Gathy of Denniston and guided by the pulse of the city. Restaurants include Arva, Aman’s convivial Italian restaurant, and Nama, Aman’s interpretation of Japan’s washoku dining tradition, which features a Japanese Hinoki wood counter for omakase-style fine dining, alongside a Wine Library, all linked by a verdant wraparound Garden Terrace. Fea turing reflective pools and dramatic firepits, the 650-square-me tre outdoor space benefits from a retracting glass roof allowing year- round access. Meanwhile, the exclusive Jazz Club offers world-class live performances, reinventing a classic New York experience and serving as a nightly gathering place. Elsewhere, a flagship Aman Spa covers three-storeys (2,300 square metres) defining an entirely new and all-encompassing approach to rejuvenation in the city. The most comprehensive realisation of Aman’s wellness philosophy in the Western Hemisphere, the spa offers a full spectrum of wellness- enhancing facilities, cen tred by a 20-metre indoor swimming pool flanked by firepits and daybeds and warmly lit by the glow of magnificent copper light installations. For those seeking a dedicated wellness experi ence, two vast Spa Houses comprise double treatment rooms, Banya and Hammam rooms, and private outdoor terraces with hot and cold plunge pools, daybeds and fireplaces. Available for private use, the Spa Houses are comparable to those of Aman’s remotest retreats and introduce a totally new concept to the city. Ideal for business or leisure guests alike, the hotel’s 83 suites are among New York’s largest and are inspired by the airy ar chitecture of Aman’s properties in Southeast Asia. An invitation to switch off from the outside world, every suite also offers a functioning fireplace, a first in New York City, while bathrooms are opulent and oversized with oval soaking bathtubs, marble rain showers and double vanities. Large windows offer dynam ic views, and the use of organic, natural materials and muted tones brings a sense of balance and harmony reminiscent of that found in Aman resorts of the East.

Resting on the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, the sto ried Crown Building was built in 1921. Designed by Warren & Wetmore, architects of some of New York’s most influential buildings - including Grand Central Station and the Helmsley Building - the building has undergone a significant restoration, marking its next chapter as an urban Aman sanctuary. Through a combination of its original architectural splendour and Aman’s harmonious design language, the inimitable tranquillity of Aman is extraordinarily reimagined in this urban environment, trans porting guests away from the frenetic pace of the city below.

The CASAMIRADOR Savassi residential building, completed in 2021, is located in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, and features boldly designed architecture that stands out in the local landscape. The building has 14 lofts and 24 studios, and is spread over nine floors in a construction located on a narrow lot, with a width of 12.7 meters. The challenge of its volumetric mathematics, to respect distances, was one of the factors that influenced non-obvious decisions resulting in architecture created with its own identity.

In order to obtain lightness and transparency, the aluminum sheets received perforations in different sizes, and were made in an asymmetrical, yet harmonic way. That process makes it possible to see through them from the inside out, where city views are exposed through the skin. However, from the outside looking in, it isn't possible to see the interior, guaranteeing privacy to the resident. This element also made it possible to explore a rich range of effects, from hiding smaller, functional windows, to tearing the skin to expose the large spans. Conceived as generous openings, these windows allow the city to become an extension of the house, with abundant light and ventilation. The concrete frames of the openings contrast with the predominant oxidized color. The skin covering the building also provides thermal comfort to the units. Away from the masonry, it provides shading of the fences and good ventilation through a mattress of renewable air. From that perspective, sustainability guided a large part of the project’s choices. Due to the reduced dimensions of the land, and minimal rooftop space for installing equipment or photovoltaic panels, it was necessary to find a solution that would avoid the entry of heat, to the detriment of an air conditioning project.

The building’s pyramidal shape, which is the result of staggering, also made it possible to allocate technical areas on the external face of the masonry, as well as on the internal face of the skin, ensuring a clean and unadorned Anotherplastic. highlight of the project concerns the challenge of placing the pyramid on the ground, touching the land lightly at a single point. Under the influence of Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer, a “V”-shaped pillar was created, which is widely used in his works. www.theciin.com

116

The interdependence between the building’s structure and the architectural project enabled great creative freedom, culminating in the most prominent element: a second skin that “wears” the building like a garment, giving it unique characteristics. The material used was aluminum, painted in an earthy reddish sepia tone that alludes to the abundance in Minas Gerais of raw ore.

117 August, 2022

Finally, to ensure flatness on the facades, the sheets were bent on all four sides, thus increasing their rigidity. Although the sheets were randomly perforated, the joints were aligned and the volume was harmonious, several studies were carried out until the final fixing model produced an alignment of the slabs and the midpoint of each floor. The study ensured optimization in the secondary structure for fixing the plates: there are only three horizontal profiles per floor, and the upper and lower profiles were also combined to fix the plates of the adjacent floors. The final plastic is the result of a marriage between covering sheets, frames, and structure. There are three elements that alternate on the facades with greater or lesser relevance of the skin, ensuring a clean and unadorned plastic.
