A Message from the Mayor It is Chataqua Time again and I welcome everyone to Chewelah and this year’s event! I hope that you enjoy all the food, crafts and events that are offered throughout the park. I also hope that you will take a little extra time to visit our merchants and eateries while you are in town. You will find Chewelah hospitality everywhere you visit.

Do not make this the only time of year you come to Chewelah. It is a great place to stay for skiing, golfing, hunting, fishing, boating….the list is endless. Chataqua Celebrates 40 Years Community Celebrations invites you to help them celebrate the 40th anniversary of Chataqua this summer – July 12-14. Chewelah Day is July 11. They are excited to bring the community several new juried artists, an improved park layout, some fun new food vendors in the food court and new specialty beers in the beer garden, and a special treat on CenterStage on Sunday, July 14 when Chewelah’s own Allen Stone will be closing the festival with his powerful soul music.

CenterStage will showcase the usual popular entertainers along with return of the fan-favorites as main events on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. FIRECREEK is returning after a one-year hiatus on Thursday, Men in the Making will amuse and rock the Friday night crowd, the ever popular Kelly Hughes Band will get the parents and kids alike on their feet, on the stage, and dancing on the lawn on Saturday; Sunday’s opening entertainment features An Dochas and the Haran Irish Dancers and is followed by the main event – Chataqua’s most famous entertainer of all – Allen Stone! Stone, from Chewelah, has been featured on numerous television shows, including The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Conan O’Brien, and Jimmy Kimmel Live and has toured around the world.

You will not want to miss this show Sunday afternoon, 2:30-4:30 p.m.

A Bit of History: Community Celebrations is a non-profit, all volunteer organization founded in 1974 to originally serve as the planning group for the nation’s Bicentennial. As the first meetings were held, a mission statement was developed to carry the organization beyond the Bicentennial and into the future. The mission: To plan, develop and promote recreational, educational and cultural activities and facilities to benefit the residents of Chewelah and Stevens County.

In 1975 and 1976, Bicentennial I and II saw the format for future celebrations develop with the introduction of arts and crafts, food service and live entertainment.

A temporary wooden stage was constructed and a piano in the back

of a pickup truck was brought in alongside. Bleachers were hauled in from the football field for seating and CenterStage was born.

In 1977 a Centennial Celebration was staged recognizing the 1877 chartering of a Post Office and official adoption of the name Chewelah.

The name “Chataqua“ was initiated in 1978; a phoneticized adaptation of the Chautauqua tent shows that traveled the rural United States from the late 1880s to about 1929. The original Chautauqua staged at Lake Chautauqua, New York continues today. The name is attributed to French trappers who encountered a Seneca Indian Tribe camped at a lake in upstate New York who went by the name Chatakas— hence lake or meeting place of the Chatakas —later simply translated “Meeting Place”.

Between 1983-84 the CenterStage pavilion was constructed and paid for with proceeds from previous Chataquas and a generous grant from the Alcoa Foundation.

The seating was designed and installed by John Steinbach. The facility was given to the City of Chewelah for community use in 1989. Improvements to the facility have since been made and paid for

by Community Celebrations.

Chataqua has enjoyed phenomenal growth with attendance for the four-day run of the show estimated at over 50,000 visits.

Proceeds enable Community Celebrations to fund numerous activities and projects. Chataqua was voted the “Best Small Town Festival” in 2012 by readers of The Inlander.

Community Celebrations will celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2013. The success of Chataqua is directly related to the dedication of a small core of volunteers that meets monthly, year around. The enthusiastic support and cooperation by the City of Chewelah, civic and service organizations and countless individuals is invaluable. Chataqua is proof that “The difficult is doable; the impossible just takes a little longer.”

Chamber of Commerce recognizes John and Sherri Hansen

By Kellie Trudeau The Independent Staff Based on nearly 30 endorsements from various community members, the Chewelah Chamber of Commerce has selected John and Sherri Hansen as the Honored Citizens of 2013.

The Hansens are long-time owners of Hansen Logging based out of Chewelah, which offers logging and road construction services, rock products, and operates three quarries.

Although John and Sherri said they have always been supportive of the community they grew up in by helping “in the background” as much as possible, Sherri has stepped up as a more visible community leader in the last three years by getting more involved with the Chamber and Chewelah School District facility improvement efforts.

Sherri said she started attending more Chamber meetings when there was concern that the organization was severely struggling. Since that time, she has been an instrumental part of the fundraising and beautification committees, and was integral in turning a large profit at the annual fundraising auction in 2011. From then on member activity has increased as the organization continues to gain momentum.

Chamber president Tracy Ferrell was one person to submit a nomination letter to the award selection committee. She wrote: “Right away (Sherri) volunteered

to rehab our old auction and within weeks we had a raffle going. The first auction was phenomenal. And it changed our budget woes from “how are we going to make it?” to “we can do anything now!!”

“Throughout that year, Sherri stepped up to the plate without every being asked...and she was visible (if not in the middle of things) at every other event we sponsored or assisted with,” Ferrell praised.

Sherri also joined the Chewelah Citizens for Kids committee three years ago since the school district was assessing their facilities to determine the best way to serve the students as enrollment continues to decline each year. Through that committee she helped lead the campaign promoting the capital improvement bond in the February election and plans to continue with the next campaign for November’s election.

“She likes helping people,” John said, who is happy to be in more of support role for Sherri as she gets more involved.

Sherri said many of the skills that have helped her become such an important community volunteer have been developed on the job since joining Hansen Logging nearly 35 years ago.

John took over Hansen Logging from his father in January 1977 and married Sherri in 1979 who then became co-owner and the general manager. Since then, it has grown from a four-man operation to over 45 employees with the additional services. John said he does not know where he would be without Sherri and attributes their success to her and their dependable, self-sufficient employees. He still sets up job sites while Sherri manages the business, bookkeeping and employees at the office.

Also, in 1984, Sherri was volunteered to represent the Chewelah/Colville chapter of the Washington State Contract Loggers Association to help them start up a credit union although she had no previous related experience, she said. However, Sherri stuck with it, even serving as president of the board one year and gained a lot of experience that has now become relevant for her involvement within the local community.

Through the Contract Loggers Association, Sherri has also been involved with Log A Load for Kids fundraiser for 16 years to raise money for Children’s Miracle Network, which helps parents pay for care for their sick children and that is something she truly believes in as well.

Hansen Logging was named the Western Region U.S. Logging Company of the Year in 2000, which is a recognition John and Sherri are very proud of. They said their business gives them the ability to support the community.

“We’ve always supported school events, sports…

Chataqua as long as I can remember,” Sherri said.

The first major thing she remembers doing for the community was raffling off a full log truck of firewood in the early 1980s to raise money to build the new hospital building. The fundraiser profited more than $7,000 at the time.

Sherri has also been on the board for the Chewelah Scholarship Foundation Dollars For Scholars since it

was created around 1992. She said it gives opportunity to everyone to receive help to further his or her education.

“Hospitals and schools are really important for a viable community,” Sherri said. “And they support the businesses here.”

Kevin Herda nominated Sherri and John as Honored Citizens for 2013. He stated, “I have lived my entire life in Chewelah and during that time I can’t think of one time I haven’t heard of the Hansens giving to a group, person or event.”

Herda recalls when their mutual friend, Rone Katzer, was left in a coma with a major head injury.

He said “Sherri took the lead and raised the single most amount of money at a community auction that Chewelah had ever had.”

“Sherri told me once, that from the very beginning, John and she both agreed that they would give everything they could back to the community which has helped them to succeed in their business,” Herda added.

John and Sherri both graduated from Jenkins High School although six years apart, and eventually met on Chewelah’s Main Street while Sherri was working in town. Sherri, who grew up on a dairy farm in Valley, said although she never planned to be running a logging business, all she knew was that she did not want to milk any more cows.

The Hansens went on to raise two children, Christine (Chalmers) and Christopher, who both graduated from JHS, and have three grandchildren.

Both Sherri and John were very shocked when the Chamber Honored Citizen Committee surprised them at their office on June 19 to present them with the Honored Citizen award. John said he usually tries to avoid the spotlight, however, they feel very honored and are glad to represent such a great community.

“We love it here, we are very fortunate to live and raise our families here,” Sherri said. “Whatever happens, the whole community comes together, steps up to the plate and helps each other.”

John and Sherri will be the honored guests in the Chataqua parade on Saturday, July 14 and will also be introduced on CenterStage on Thursday, June 11 to kickoff the annual festival. Sherri said since they always try to have one of their logging trucks in the parade, they may still ride in one, just as the Honored Citizens this time.

Even though it was not their business that was selected for the award, she said, “the business is why were are here. We couldn’t do all that we do without it.”

The Honored Citizen selection committee also received a nomination letter endorsed by a total of 28 community members, which simply stated, “It does not need to be said what John and Sherri Hansen have done for our community. Those of us who live here are well aware of their ongoing support, not only for our community, but also for the individuals of our community who find themselves peril.”

Everyone Loves a Parade - Begins at 10 a.m.

PARKING INFORMATION Parking anywhere along the parade route is prohibited after 7 a.m. on Saturday morning. (Please refer to Parade Route Map) Improperly parked and/or unattended vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense. Once a tow truck has been dispatched, a towing fee will be charged.

Prior to 10 a.m., customers needing to make necessary pick ups from Main Street businesses will be allowed access by the police officer at the intersection of Main and East Fifth Street. Vehicles must be off the street by 10 a.m.

PARADE PARTICIPATION Everyone is welcome to join in the Chataqua Parade on Saturday morning.

Line up starts at 8 a.m. in the staging area adjacent to the Municipal Center (City Hall) on Clay St. and East 3rd.

(See Map) The Parade starts at 10 a.m.

Pre-registration is appreciated, but not required.

On arrival at the staging area, have one person from your party register with the Parade Registrar at the corner of Webster and 2nd St. East to obtain

a number and placement in the parade.

Once you have been assigned a number and directed to your staging locations, please get your float, car, group, horses, logging truck (whatever) to its proper location as quickly as possible. Private cars must be removed from the area.

Ask the Parade Registrar helpers for proper (non-tow away) areas in which passengers or support vehicles may be parked.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR PARADE ENTRIES Throwing anything, including candy, from vehicles or floats towards the parade watchers is strictly prohibited to prevent children from dashing out into the street. Candy may be handed out by person(s) walking close to curbs.

Please be careful rounding corners.

The parade route has some sharp turns and spectators, especially kids, tend to crowd into the street.

The Jukebox Time Machine was invented by “Fast Jack” Pulliam 10 years ago with the desire to bring the 60’s to people not only in sound but sight. With period costumes, a bit of theater, and a lot of energy, the whole park becomes the stage and the stage a party.

Men in the Making is comprised of four very creative men with the ability to transcend time and space in an electrifying review of the greatest artists we have all come to know and love. From groups like the Temptations, to the Beatles; Ike & Tina Turner to the Guess Who; from the Monkees to the Moody Blues.

Coeurimba - Saturday 11:15 a.m.

Coeurimba is known throughout the Northwest for its exciting performances of African music. The band plays a collection of traditional and modern songs, primarily originating from Zimbabwe. The rhythmically intense music is pounded out on large wooden xylophones called marimbas.

Two of Clubs plus One - Saturday 1:30 p.m.

Two of Clubs have been entertaining audiences with their juggling and comedy since 1989. They begin their stage show with a comic club juggling routine.

Passing around a volunteer is next. The line gets longer and the passing gets harder. Time for an “America’s Funniest People” award-winning tire pump duet? The performance gets hotter when Bill pulls out the fire eating and then Tina pulls out the torches! They make the impossible look impossibly easy and the audience loves them. Bring the kids! You can also catch them around the park entertaining the crowd from 2:45-5 p.m.

The Engell Family Band - Saturday 5:30 p.m.

The Engell Family is a 6-piece all acoustic band that have been playing and performing together locally for more than 10 years. They recently completed their seventh Southwest winter concert tour. They perform a variety of music including Bluegrass, Gospel, Folk and Western Swing. You’ll enjoy the upbeat rhythm of the banjo, twin fiddling, wholesome harmonies and old time clogging. An Dochas, Gaelic for “The Hope”, captivates audiences of all ages with their lively interpretation of traditional Irish music. The band members’ individual cultural and musical backgrounds culminate in a sound that is as dynamic as it is poignant. With a foundation of authentic instrumentation – Uileann pipes, bodhran, fiddle, mandolin and guitar – the band blends new and old, elegantly incorporating contemporary sounds into their diverse repertoire.

Moving vocals, rife with loss, longing, energy, and adventure are layered with familiar and original melodies. Audiences are inspired as they hear the music of An Dochas and feel the sorrow, the joy, and The Hope. An Dochas will be performing with the Haran Irish Dancers.

Allen Stone: Chataqua’s Grand Finale

The Chewelah city park is expected to become a beehive of excitement on Sunday afternoon when internationally known soul singer and songwriter Allen Stone returns to his home town for a CenterStage concert.

“Coming back home and playing at Chataqua is gonna be wild,” said Stone. “I’ve played shows on every continent besides Antartica in the past three years and coming back to where it all started is gonna be a trip. I’m very excited.”

Stone’s unique style of song is seen by some as a reflection on the music of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gay. USA Today referred to him as “a pitch-perfect powerhouse.”

Stone, who now refers to himself as a “hippie with soul,” has selfreleased two records, “Last To Speak” in 2010 and the self-titled “Allen Stone” in 2011. It was in October of 2011, when his second album was released, that his career truly began to take off.

His album “Allen Stone” peaked at the number two spot on the Rhythm & Blues/Soul charts on iTunes. It rose to #9 on the Billboard Heatseekers leaderboard and #35 on the R&B/Hip Hop Album charts.

On October 26, 2011, Stone performed his song “Unaware” on Conan.

Then, on January 3, 2013, he appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and sang “Sleep.”

More recently, he was the opening performer at the Bonnaroo music festival.

“I’m a soul singer,” said Stone. “I grew up in the country where there was no racial diversity, and, somehow, through my writings and my singing, all nationalities are enjoying it. What a blessing. So for me, I’m a singer. I sing songs. I just hope you like them.”

Stone will be interrupting his summer east coast tour, where he has appeared before one sold out crowd after another, to appear at Chataqua.

He and his band will perform at the Time Warner Amphitheatre in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday night before flying cross-country to Chewelah the following morning. He will then fly back to the east coast for a Tuesday night concert in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Stone was born and raised here in Chewelah. His parents, Dan and Sandy Stone, along with his brother Kenny and his sister Kaylee, lived right across the street from Merle B. Snyder field.

“It’s important to have a firm hold on your sense of self,” said Stone, “like who you are, where you come from, and what made you. Playing in Chewelah is important to me because it allows me to get back to my roots.”

Stone got his start in music at the New Life Christian Church, where his dad was the minister. There, he began singing at the age of only three.

By age 14, he was leading worship hymns at the church and playing the guitar.

It was at this time, when he was a teenager, that Stone discovered soul music. Once he discovered this genre of music, he started collecting classic albums from the 1960s and 1970s. He was 15 when he first heard Stevie Wonder’s album “Innervisions,” which made a major impact on his music career.

Stone will be donating his Chataqua performance fee to the Chewelah Music Boosters.

The Chewelah Arts Guild is pleased to invite children to join in the fun offered during the 2013 Chataqua celebration. The Children’s Pavilion is located across the creek from CenterStage and provides a place where parents can bring their children to escape the hustle and bustle of the crowd. The children can enjoy various “Art” experiences.

On-going activities include water play where kiddie pools are filled with fresh water everyday and children can build flumes, water slides or maybe they would prefer to cool off in the water. Young artists can create masterpieces by painting with tempera paint-we provide paint shirts, but just in case, the paint is easily washed off. Arts Guild artists will be painting designs on small faces and hands at various times during the weekend as well.

Professional artists are scheduled during the weekend to provide an authentic art experience for the young

patrons. Children can create pet rocks, paper monsters, design a puzzle, as well as make junk-band instruments among other activities.

A limited number of gourds will be available for children to decorate a birdhouse or design a gourd rattle; only one gourd per child please!

All of the Children Pavilion activities are free to the public compliments of the Chewelah Arts Guild, and Community Celebrations.

The Beer Garden is a shady place for adults (age 21 and over) to enjoy visiting with friends and sipping some suds while catching the entertainment on CenterStage.

The Beer Garden is operated by Community Celebrations in strict compliance with Washington State Liquor Control Board rules and regulations. WSLCB restrictions on over-serving will be fairly, but firmly enforced.

The proceeds from the Beer Garden partially offset the cost of entertainment on CenterStage.

The Chewelah Little League has 16 teams participating in the Chataqua tournament this year for the 10 and under division and 12 and under division. They will be playing Thursday through Sunday at the Chewelah Bowling Alley field on West Lincoln Avenue, and the Barbour Complex behind Jenkins High School (also on West Lincoln). The Chataqua Challenge 5K and 10K races will be happening again this year on July 13, 2013 beginning at 7 a.m. There are fantastic trophies designed by David Govedare for first place male and female winners of each race and medals and ribbons for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in nine different categories.

Walkers are welcome on either course.

The early start will give participants a break from the summer heat - and get most everyone to the finish line in time to view the Chataqua parade, which starts at 10 a.m., and enjoy all the activities at the park.

Registration is at East 7th Street and Lincoln Street starting at 6 a.m. The entry fee is $13 ($5 without a shirt) or $16 late entry after July 3. Same day registration is OK. If you need a registration you can print one off at http://www.chewelahchataqua.com. After opening the page, click on the Applications tab at the top of the page then go down to Chataqua Fun Run. You can also get a form at St. Joseph’s Hospital, The Independent, Valley Drug or Akers United Drug in Chewelah, or Colville Fitness Center, or Clark’s All Sports in Colville.

Chewelah Golf and Country Club Chataqua Tournament Every year the Chewelah Golf and Country Club hosts an annual men’s golf tournament during Saturday and Sunday of the Chataqua Festival.

Preregistration is required by July 6 to participate in this two-day event open to two-man teams.

For the 2013 tournament, Saturday, July 13 is Best Ball and Sunday, July 14 is the Scramble.

The Chewelah Golf & Country Club is a 27-hole facility open to the public. The beautifully maintained course is designed to challenge golfers of all ability levels.

Scenic views and glimpses of abundant wildlife are extra benefits.

An RV park is adjacent to the course and includes modern laundry facilities

and showers. Three tennis courts and the driving range are all within a short walk.

The only 27-hole course in the region, the combination of both a nine and eighteen-hole venue has golfers raving about the versatility of the facility.

The well designed fairways, traps, water hazards and greens are proving to be a major attraction for golfers from throughout the Inland Northwest.

Chataqua Fun Shoot The Chewelah Trap Club’s annual Chataqua Fun/Money Shoot will be held Saturday, July 13, beginning at 9 a.m.

• Shoot cards will be $25 for five shoots.

Melody Riders Barrel Racing The Melody Riders Saddle Club (MRSC) of Chewelah is one of the oldest horse-oriented clubs in the state of Washington, formed in the 1950’s. The goal of the club has always been to provide family activities for the people of this area. The club maintains an arena located one mile south of Chewelah on US Highway 395.

The past twelve years, MRSC has produced a Western Games Competition Series, which consists of six days of competition scheduled throughout the summers on Saturdays. Five years ago, they also began offering a barrel racing series, TGIF, scheduled for each Friday evening prior to the Western Game Series. Both the

National Barrel Horse Association and the Barrel Racers National 4-D Association co-sanction the TGIF series.

The Melody Riders is also hosting an OPEN performance Horse Show Series, along with their Barrel Series and Western Gaming.

Visit Chewelah for Classic Car Shows Nostalgia Days - Memorial Day Weekend Hundreds of classic and antique vehicles go on display on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend for the Chokes and Spokes Antique Car Club “Nostalgia Days” Car Show.

Spectators are invited to judge their favorites while they wander through the eight-acre park. Food booths and concessions are on-site too.

Just a short walk from the park, the Chewelah Arts Guild stages a magnificent Quilt Show at Jenkins

High School.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, the Park Avenue Players present a hilarious stage production featuring actors from every corner of Stevens County. Dinner is included with the Saturday night performance. A Sunday matinee performance is also available.

The Chewelah Museum also opens for the season on this weekend.

Rev it Up for the Vets - First Saturday in August David Bergman and the Blue Angels Car Club plan to donate $10,000 to assist service members who have been injured in the line of duty. All proceeds from Rev’ It Up For The Vets will be donated to the nonprofit organization Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), and will support a full range of programs and services for this generation of injured veterans and their families.

Over 47,000 servicemen and women have been injured in the recent military conflicts. In addition to the physical wounds, it is estimated as many as 400,000 service members live with the invisible wounds of war

including combat-related stress, major depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Another 320,000 are believed to have experienced a traumatic brain injury while on deployment.

WWP’s 18 programs and services are uniquely structured to nurture the mind and body, and encourage economic empowerment and engagement.

Since 2008 the Blue Angels Car Club has hosted a car show in Chewelah, Wa. Last year in 2012 the club decided to take the annual car show in a different direction. One of the youngest active members, David Bergman, took on the position as Event Direc-

tor and Coordinator of the show. In the event’s first year, there was $8,800 raised for Wounded Warrior Project and over $11,000 total for all Veterans charities that took part in the event.

This year the goal is to raise $10,000 for Wounded Warrior Project. Events for the day include a military honor guard, service member recognition ceremony, kids events, flag retirement ceremony as well as multiple raffles and auctions. Rev’ It Up For the Vets will take place on August 3, 2013 in the Chewelah City Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
