WILDFIRES IN WASHINGTON

Chewelah puts track work out for re-bid Solitary bid received in first round too high By Jamie Henneman The Independent Staff

QUICK RESPONSE

The Chewelah School District (CSD) has put site prep work on the new track project back out to bid after the first round of bidding resulted in only one offer that was much higher than the project estimate. Landscape Inc. was the only bidder who responded to the initial round for the site-prep work the district hoped to have started this football season. The bid from Landscape Inc. was $1.125 million for the work that would have fully prepped the track site for the application of the new track surface. CSD Superintendent Rick Linehan said the single bid was more than five percent over project estimates and state rules require the district to put the project out to bid again. “Our original project estimate was $733,000 for this portion of the work. Because the bid we received was more than five

One of the most nerve-wracking things in sports can be a fifth set of volleyball. Chewelah was angling for their first win of the season Monday night against 2B Springdale and came away with the 21-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-9,

EVENTS

Chewelah hosting cross country meet at ski hill 49 Degrees North site of home meet for first time By Brandon Hansen The Independent Staff The Chewelah Cross Country team is hosting their first home meet of the season on Saturday and it’s not your average meet. Unlike a cross country race that’s on a golf course or based around a soccer field, Chewelah’s 49 Degrees North race is based on the ski hill. It’s the first year that 49 Degrees North has hosted the event. “It is very unique, I

know in my running career I’ve never raced at a ski hill before,” Chewelah Cross Country coach Melissa Burkey said. “We were somewhat limited as far as being able to groom the course since the resort is in the Colville National Forest but to me running a course like this is the essence of cross country running.” The meet will feature a rough trail instead of a road or lawn and runners will be climbing for the first mile. There’s also the fact that the race is in the trees - not a city park - of a woods that the more hearty people in See SKI HILL Page 14
