Cruisin’ Chataqua 2016 Welcome to Chewelah!

W

elcome to Chewelah, and welcome back to our friends who have visited before! We are honored that you are taking this opportunity to enjoy our community and the many activities happening this week. As a community we continue to thrive and grow - economic development is taking place and picking up speed…the major expansion at 49 Degrees North, a new pickle ball court at Chewelah Golf & Country Club, the performing arts center due to open in 2017, new businesses opening and/or expanding, inquiries we receive at City Hall as to possible locations for new businesses..and the much anticipated new track for Jenkins High School that will allow us to host area track meets once again! We are a busy community! Events too numerous to mention include the annual Art Walk (A Taste of Chewelah), Light up the Park (1951 lit pumpkins last October), car and quilt show on Memorial Day Weekend, car cruise in August culminating in a downtown street dance, Chewelah’s Got Talent, Fiddlers on the Peak, Music on the Mountain (Spokane Symphony), and lots of first class local theater productions throughout the year. Whatever your interests, there is something in or around Chewelah to draw you: fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, biking, ATV riding, skiing (both water & snow), golfing, the Chewelah Casino, camping, horseback riding, walking, running, hunting, or just relaxing…its Simply Chewelah! Sincerely, Dorothy Knauss Mayor of Chewelah

Look for new entertainment!

new Genres, headlining acts Chataqua will have a new flavor when it comes to entertainment this year at the 43-year old event. Local and out-of-area acts will take CenterStage for the marquee community event in the city park. Everyday of the festival will be jam-packed with performers from all genres and tastes. “This year we have quite a few new groups coming to perform at Chataqua,” Entertainment Coordinator Nicole Alby said. “For many years, people have been asking for some new talent. This year we are bringing it.” Chewelah Day kicks off as usual with Sara Cochran’s piano students performing at 4 p.m. followed by the Mountain Melodies Chorus at 5 p.m. with the Northern Ballet and Performing Arts students. After Honored Citizen Kay Comer-Lupton is introduced on CenterStage, Janet McLaughlin’s talent show featuring local youth will start at 6:30 p.m. But closing on Thursday night will be a new act: Chris Rieser & the Nerve performs from 9-11 p.m. Alby said, “They are a fun rock group that will surely have you up dancing in no time.” They’ve been performing together for over 14 years. Friday night also has a new

headliner - MOJO the Party Band starts at 8 p.m. Friday, July 8. “They’re a very upbeat group that performs a variety of music from oldies to current hits,” Alby said. “Music that everyone will enjoy.” Also new to Chataqua Friday will be The Robbie Walden Band - A Texas, red-dirt and outlaw influenced band groomed out of the Pacific Northwest. Friday will also feature local performers with Savannah Blain (an upcoming singer and songwriter) and Spectra (coffeehouse jazz and blues). Saturday brings back returning Chataqua favorites: Kevin Wolfe with his magic and hypnosis act intended for all ages, Coeurimba - described as Marimba: energetic music with a soul, and local rock variety band FIRECREEK. Local clogging group - The Stevens County Stompers kick off the day at 10 a.m. Saturday also introduces another new act: The Islanders Steel Drum Band. Then the Kelly Hughes Band, featuring high energy country music, will close out Saturday as they’ve done for many years. “He draws a great crowd,” Alby

said. On Sunday, Rachael and Emma Larsen will perform their dance and violin act at Chataqua for the first time; the duo placed second at Chewelah’s Got Talent earlier in the year. They’ll be followed by An Dochas and the Haran Irish Dancers. The Sara Brown Band will then return for its second year as Sunday’s headliner on Sunday afternoon. The planning process for the Chataqua entertainment begins in November as Alby and volunteers try to send out Save The Dates and start looking for new performers. “I like to go listen to new groups,” she said. “It really gives you the chance to see and hear the group live versus listening to a demo. I also love to see how the audience responded.” By the end of January, we try to have all contracts out and confirmed. By April, Alby will reconfirm with the performers and get all the remaining details lined out. Those interested in performing next year, can go to Chataqua’s website, www.chewelahchataqua.com, and send their group’s information and a demo.

Chewelah’s Chataqua: 43 years of tradition Everyone is invited to Chataqua 2016, July 7-10 in beautiful Chewelah, Washington, with Chewelah Day on Thursday, July 7! Chataqua is in its 43rd year and is better than ever! Three days of fine Juried Arts and Crafts, Free CenterStage Entertainment, Food Court, Beer Garden, Carnival, Children’s Pavilion and special events including a Parade, Fun

Run, Golf Tournament and much more! Chataqua is held in the City Park on Hwy 395 just a short drive from Spokane. Chewelah Chataqua is an updated version of an American tradition established at Lake Chautauqua, New York, in 1874. Every summer, thousands flocked to the Chautauqua grounds to hear and see lecturers, musicians, artists, actors,

explorers, evangelists, poets and presidents. It became so successful, that traveling Chautauqua set out by rail to bring this unique form of entertainment to the nation’s hinterlands. Huge tents were set up and the programs lasted ten days and nights. President Teddy Roosevelt once declared, “Chautauqua is the most American thing in America!” The New York site continues to draw thousands

of visitors to the compound each summer. Community Celebrations adopted the concept of Chautauqua for Chewelah in 1974, simplified the spelling of the name to Chataqua, and condensed the entertainment to three and one half days. Ranked as the third largest event of its kind in the state of Washington, Chewelah and

Chataqua continues to attract over 50,000 visitors to this fun festival for folks of all ages. More information, event schedules and lodging info can be found at www.ChewelahChataqua. com. Our History A small group of Chewelah area residents joined together in 1974 to assist “Rainbow“ Emily Touraine, a nationally recognized artist specializing in Native American themes, bring to Chewelah a display of Native American relics, art and ceremonial costumes. The event generated considerable interest and participation by local tribal members and non Indian artists in the area. The Chewelah group which had formed in 1974 decided to incorporate as a non-profit organization and develop a Bicentennial celebration for southern Stevens County. The name Community Celebrations was chosen and in 1975 the organization filed Articles of Incorporation with the Washington Secretary of State. Community Celebrations also filed for non-profit status with the Department of Internal Revenue and received the IRS 501-C3 designation late in 1975.

T

his is country/rock at its best! Whether it’s a driving up-tempo arrangement or a “someone done me wrong” song, this group from State Line is one hot bunch of pickers and grinners. Their three-hour show will be the closing act on Saturday night. Kelly says it’s “knee-slappin’ fun. Sing along and dance on the grass.”

Sunday, July 10 | 2:30-4:30 p.m.

The Sara Brown Band

T

he Sara Brown Band is a new and exciting local act that is guaranteed to please the audience. Drawing from their influences of blues, rock, pop and funk, the Sara Brown Band delivers an eclectic mix of sounds. Whether it’s an interpretation of Adele or Beyonce, Sara’s voice will capture your heart. The talented Sara Brown leads the band with her dynamic singing and songwriting. Sara is a classically trained vocalist with a love for performing and a passion for powerhouse vocals. Her style and technique have gained the respect and recognition from top recording companies such as Sony, Motown and Epic Records. In Hollywood she was given the title and trophy for "Singer of the Year" at Universal Studios in 2002. In 2012 Sara was awarded Best Female Blues Performer by the Inland

D

Danekas Funeral Chapel

Empire Blues Society. She's got an infectious smile and a voice that will excite you. Jesse Brown plays bass for the band. With an innate sense of rhythm and a natural feel for a good groove he ties the melody together with the beat to let the vocals soar over it all. He is a very talented songwriter in his own right. Jeff Curtiss is always in the pocket with his rock steady drumming. This studio musician has an authentic banquet of sounds, from slamming funk to syncopated shuffles. He is truly one of the “top” drummers in the region and a catalyst in the evolution of the band. Dave Keeley brings to the band the influences of Chicago blues and Motown rhythm guitar. His sound is authentic and comes from his soul. He has been a mainstay of the blues scene for 20+ years playing festivals and road houses across the Pacific Northwest. Playing guitar in the Sara Brown Band allows Dave the opportunity to collaborate with top notch musicians. Brent Purvis plays keyboard and trombone. He is an experienced performer, composer, music educator and has been featured on stage and in the studio throughout the Northwest and Alaska. Brent has an extensive background in composition and arrangements for jazz ensemble and concert bands. When not on the road with the Sara Brown Band, you’ll find him performing in the Purvis/Cesaratto Jazz Quartet. Guest musician Gary Killings rounds out the horn section on the bands bigger stage performances. Gary is a seasoned saxophone player, but he is also experienced in flute and clarinet. He cut his musical chops in Miami, Florida playing in a rock & roll band on Saturdays and a symphonic orchestra on Sundays. Over the past 30 years Gary has performed with numerous musical groups in the Inland Northwest. He has also collaborated with many local artists in the studio making recordings.

n Dochas, Gaelic for “The Hope,” captivates audiences of all ages with their lively interpretation of traditional Irish music. The band members’ individual cultural and musical backgrounds culminate in a sound that is as dynamic as it is poignant. With a foundation of authentic instrumentation – Uileann pipes, bodhran, fiddle, mandolin and guitar – the band blends new and old, elegantly incorporating contemporary sounds into their diverse repertoire. Moving vocals, rife with loss, longing, energy, and adventure are layered with familiar and original melodies. Audiences are inspired as they hear the music of An Dochas and feel the sorrow, the joy, and The Hope. http:// www.andochas.com/ An Dochas will be performing with the Haran Irish Dancers.

T

he Haran School of Irish Dance was founded some 15 years ago in Kettle Falls, Washington by a wonderful woman named Deirdre Abeid. In 2001, in response to many requests, Deirdre's oldest daughter Caitlin came to Spokane to open a Haran school here. Deirdre has passed on, but her legacy is carried on by her two talented daughters. The oldest daughter, now Caitlin Trusler, teaches our rapidly growing school on Spokane's south hill and younger daughter Claire Abeid teaches the original Kettle Falls school. The Beer Garden Find it near CenterStage!

The Beer Garden is a shady place for adults (age 21 and over) to enjoy visiting with friends and sipping some suds while catching the entertainment on CenterStage. The Beer Garden is operated by Community Celebrations in strict compliance with Washington State Liquor Control Board rules and regulations. WSLCB restrictions on over-serving will be fairly, but firmly enforced. The proceeds from the Beer Garden partially offset the cost of entertainment on CenterStage. We ask for your cooperation in following WSLCB rules: 1. Serving intoxicated patrons (over-serving) is prohibited. 2. Every person on the premises or seeking entry is required to have ID on their person to verify age identity. 3. After ID has been checked by security, a mark will be stamped on the hand allowing that person to leave and re-enter without having to check their ID again. The mark must be plainly visible. 4. Beer or wine or any other beverage may not be handed over the fence or carried into or out of the beer garden in any kind of container.

Volunteers help serve at the beer garden (2014 photo). Scott and Sammy Schlafman enjoy Hawaiian Shaved Ice at Chataqua 2015.

Golf Tournament E

very year the Chewelah Golf and Country Club hosts an annual 2-Man Best Ball-Scramble golf tournament during Saturday and Sunday of the Chataqua Festival. For the 2016 tournament, 2-Man Best Ball is on Saturday, July 9 and the 2-Man Scramble is on Sunday, July 10. Call the pro shop at 509-935-6807 for more information or visit www. chewelahgolf.com. The Chewelah Golf & Country Club is a 27-hole facility open to the public. The beautifully maintained course is designed to challenge golfers of all ability levels. Scenic views and glimpses of abundant wildlife are extra benefits. An RV park is adjacent to the course and includes modern laundry facilities and showers. Three tennis courts and the

driving range are all within a short walk. The only 27-hole course in the region, the combination of both a nine and eighteen-hole venue has golfers raving about the versatility of the facility. The well designed fairways, traps, water hazards and greens are proving to be a major attraction for golfers from throughout the Inland Northwest. Another major attraction is the beautiful clubhouse and the Rusty Putter restaurant and lounge. Every conceivable amenity has been included for golfers and non-golfers. The clubhouse has been the site for many large area functions and serves that purpose nicely. For informations on clubhouse availability and reservations, call 509-935-7251.

Griepp called Kay exceptionally welcoming to newcomers, encouraging them to become involved in community events. “She creates a network among service groups because she is a vital part of so many, increasing collaborations and overall service to important community missions and goals,” Griepp said. “Not only does Kay go beyond what many of us do as volunteers, she is always looking to improve and enhance this community, expanding upon her current service.” Comer-Lupton is also a member of the Chewelah Valley Lions Club of Lions Club International, which she says is a “great group working to help people with blindness, deafness and diabetes.” “We help out a good percent of Stevens County,” Kay said. “Our main effort with glasses and hearing makes me feel like I’m helping people see and experience art and music.” Kay is also a member of the Creekside Writers group, the American Legion Auxil-

iary, and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs - Chewelah Woman’s Club. One of her favorite events is the Chewelah Community Art Show. “I’ve never been to an art show before that showcases art from a six-year old and then a professional right alongside one another,” she said. The Children’s Pavilion holds a special place in her heart. She spends countless hours arranging, planning and then teacher art and craft lessons as well as painting faces. “Much of what Cathryn has accomplished has been ‘under the radar’ as she hasn’t promoted her actions,” said her husband Bill Lupton. “She is constantly trying to make the community more attractive.” Lupton added that he didn’t realize that marrying Kay meant he was also marrying into the entire volunteering population of Chewelah and much of Stevens County. “When we married 10 years ago, I knew she was strongly attached to Chewelah and I did not think I could convince her to move to my home in Bremerton,” Lupton said. “We decided to stay and establish here in her Chewelah home. choice.” So how does Kay find time for all these activities? She says being retired helps but it’s also her philosophy when it comes to community. “I truly believe everybody can give back and not just take from the community,” Comer-Lupton said. Kay has three children, six granddaughters, two grandsons, three great grandsons

and one great granddaughter. “I could build a city,” Comer-Lupton laughs. “I have family that’s a police officer, a teacher and a nurse. We all have our aspects of a town covered.” But considering her commitment to Chewelah and the impact she’s had on the community, it appears she’s already built a city.
