The Event 7 PACAwards night will be Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Chewelah Civic Center. David Govedare will be the featured artist at the local awards show. PACA will donate all net proceeds to the Aaron Huff family fund in honor of last year’s featured artist who passed away earlier this year.
Fire destroys Bluecreek home A home just north of Bluecreek off Highway 395 was completely destroyed by a suspected electric fire on Monday, Feb. 17. It destroyed the manufactured home, garage and one vehicle located at 1643 Hwy 395 South. These offer unique forums where residents can ask questions and hear responses from the Congresswoman – in person. Rep. 146 racers compete at Sheimo Cup By Jared Arnold The Independent Staff The 27th Annual Sheimo Cup duel course races were held last Saturday, February 15 at 49 Degrees North Mountain Resort. 146 racers competed in the fun, family event. Each racer made one run down the blue course and one run down the red course for a combined time against others in their age category. Proceeds from the race fees help support the Forty-nine Alpine Ski Team (FAST) program at the resort. The event was the “best race ever” and had See SHEIMO CUP Page 6

A benefit fundraiser has been planned for Joey Baker, to help with the costs of cancer treatment. A chili feed and silent auction is scheduled for Friday, April 5, 4-7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Chewelah. Baker, 20, is a resident of the Chewelah and Valley areas and a

City works to streamline farming leases By Jamie Henneman The Independent Staff The Chewelah City Council is planning to consider how to streamline farming leases it has with area farmers who help manage four
different parcels of city land. The issue was introduced by City Administrator Mike Frizzell during a “mayoral disclosure” on the issue at the Feb. 5 meeting. According to Frizzell, current Mayor Dorothy
Knauss wanted to disclose to the council that two of the farmed parcels are leased by the mayor’s son, Bruce Stumpf. Mayor Knauss was not present at the Feb. 5

Three bills Sen. Brian Dansel introduced to help residents and local governments in northeast Washington are an important step closer to votes by the full Senate. One measure would give counties and cities relief from regulatory costs linked to the state’s Growth Management Act, while the second would help with managing the 7th Legislative District’s cougar population. Commissioners to hold workshop on moratorium The Stevens County Commissioners will hold a public workshop on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the Chewelah Civic Center
Staying true to its more than 30-year history, the Valley community once again passed their local school district levy after the Feb. 11 special election last week. The Valley School District’s Maintenance & Operations (M&O) levy that voters are asked to approve every four years, showed a 54.07% yes-vote as of Friday, Feb. 14. The election will be certified on Feb. 25.
