An increase in business and consumer spending boosted the state’s taxable retail sales by 7.6 percent for the third quarter of 2013. Taxable retail sales between July 1 and Sept. 30, 2013 reached $31 billion – a $2.2 billion increase over the same period in 2012, according to the Washington State Department of Revenue’s (Revenue) quarterly analysis. “The increase in taxable retail sales was driven by auto sales and new construction,” Revenue Director Carol K. Nelson said. “This increase in spending shows that consumer confidence in Washington continues to improve and is at its highest level since the Great Recession.” Third quarter retail trade purchases increased by 5.4 percent over the same time the year before. Guests enjoy the plentiful hors d’ oeuvres available at the Cork ‘n Keg Festival on Feb. 9.
Cork ‘n Keg: a classy event By Kellie Trudeau The Independent Staff Twelve years ago, the Chewelah Valley Lions Club started the Cork ‘n Keg Festival, which remains its biggest fundraiser by offering a variety of beer, wine and food during an adults-only social gathering that many look forward to all year. The 2014 event was held at the Chewelah Civic Center on Saturday, Feb. 9 from 7-10 p.m. and nearly all 250 tickets were sold out, as usual, to pack the room with a lively crowd sharing in energetic conversations.
Thirty-five beers and wines were available for guests to sample including many regional options such as microbreweries from Colville, Kettle Falls, and Republic. Event co-chair Margie Walters said they try to introduce new wine and beer varieties in addition to bringing back old favorites each year. Lions club members and local brewery owners were responsible for pouring all the drinks and each patron was allowed 16 punches. See CORK ‘N KEG Page 7

Superintendent’s contract extended after favorable evaluation By Jamie Henneman The Independent Staff The Chewelah School Board has again decided to retain the employment of current CSD Superintendent Rick Linehan through 2017, approving a “rolling extension” on his current contract that started in 2010. The “rolling extension” is a feature of the superintendent’s agreement with the district designed to create stable three-year periods of contract employment for the superintendent under the current terms. The contract and the “rolling extensions” must be approved on an annual basis. Should the school board dismiss the superintendent following an annual review, it would be liable for up to three years of compensation, per the contract agreement. Along with the annual contract approval, the school board also conducts an evaluation of the superintendent’s performance.
