A DAY OF DIALOGUE The Tallahassee Community College Workforce Development Leadership Institute is pleased to offer A Day of Dialogue: For Women, About Women, By Women. The daylong event will feature a keynote address from Nancy Carter, PhD. She has over 30 years of experience as a researcher, educator and consultant specializing in women’s professional development and advancement. She will discuss traditional gender stereotypes; the limitations imposed by such labels; introduce new research pertaining to the emerging model of Inclusive Leadership and the attributes harvesting ideas; and the development of a prototype around the question: What do women need to be confident and effective leaders? There will be an examination of how women are currently leading in life and the collective concerns that women share about self-empowerment and leading others to their full potential. The event will be held on February 18, 2014 from 8:30am to 4:00pm at Mission San Luis. SOCIAL JUSTICE SYMPOSIUM You are invited to share your experiences and knowledge at the first annual Act! symposium at First Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee from February 28th, 2014through March 2nd, 2014. This event will bring together a diverse array of community members, professionals, activists, artists, and researchers who all work toward social justice goals. The symposium is bringing together diverse social justice advocates in order to bridge divides and facilitate future collaboration. ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES TUTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP If you would like to help newcomers develop their English skills, become a member of a great organization, meet people from around the world, and learn new skills from an accredited non-profit educational organization, then this is the workshop for you. Become a volunteer tutor! No foreign language skills or prior teaching experience required! This workshop will be held on Saturday, February 1st from 1:00pm-4:30pm in the Literacy Classroom on the 3rd floor of the Collins Main Library at 200 W. Park Avenue. FLORIDA STUDENT LEADERSHIP FORUM ON FAITH & VALUES The most important responsibility of society is the development and transmission of basic and shared values. To attempt to work toward that challenge, you are invited as student leaders to come to Tallahassee for the 22nd annual Florida Student Leadership Forum on Faith and Values. The Forum will begin Friday evening, March 14, 2014 and conclude Sunday morning, March 16, 2014. The cost per student is $280 and will include meals, lodging and program fees. The main feature of the forum will be the opportunity for students to hear from and spend time with leaders from business, government, sports, and the arts to hear their successes and failures, their values, and how they apply their faith to their lives and their work. SUMMER TEACHING OPPORTUNITIES The Institute of Reading Development is seeking candidates for summer 2014 teaching positions. IRD seeks applicants with an undergraduate degree or higher from any discipline. IRD provides a paid training program and comprehensive on-going support. Summer teaching positions with the Institute offer the opportunity to: 1) Earn more than $6,000 during the summer. Teachers typically earn between $500 and $700 per week while teaching. 2) Gain over 500 hours of teacher-training and teaching experience with a variety of age groups. 3) Help students of all ages develop their reading skills and ability to become imaginatively absorbed in books. The Institute is an educational service provider that teaches developmental reading programs in partnership with the continuing education departments of more than 100 colleges and universities across the United States. Our classes for students of all ages improve their reading skills and teach them to experience absorption in literature. DONALD M. PAYNE INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIP Howard University, in cooperation with the US Agency for International Development, invites outstanding individuals interested in international development and careers in the USAID Foreign Service to apply for the 2014 Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship. Candidates can be graduating seniors or college graduates with strong academic records and a desire to promote positive change in the world. The Payne Program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service and those with financial need. Eligibility: Must be a US citizen; must be seeking admission to enter a two-year program in the fall of 2014 at a US University; must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application. SMARTER LUNCHROOM PROGRAM INTERNSHIP Leon County Extension, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is looking for students to work on a lunchroom make over project in four local schools. The purpose of this program is to increase healthy eating and decrease food waste. There are internship spots available and those interns will be working with Ghazvini Alternative School, Sabal Palm Elementary, Nims Middle School, and Godby High School. This program will be an excellent, hands-on learning experience for any student interested in education, children, and/or nutrition. Student responsibilities will include, but not be limited to: nutrition education, table top food demonstrations, and working with cafeteria staff to implement and sustain Smarter Lunchrooms Movement principles.
