The Center for Leadership and Social Change invites students to get engaged in the third community dialogue of the semester, “Questioning American Patriotism.” This dialogue will be held on Oct. 29 in the Dunlap Success Center room 2201/2202 from noon to 1:30 p.m. The dialogue will tackle the question of what is American patriotism through an activist perspective and explore the limits of freedoms as U.S. citizens and deployed military personnel. PARTCIPATE IN CULTURAL GRADUATION The Center for Leadership & Social Change, the Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement, and the Student Government Association invite fall 2016 graduates to participate in the Rite to A-rak-ke-cetv Cultural Graduation & Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 15. The name “A-rak-ke-ce-tv” is the Seminole Creek phrase meaning “to honor” as he ceremony seeks to honor students’ accomplishments, their loved ones, and what it truly means to be a Seminole. FSU’s Center for Leadership & Social Change is excited to host the fifth annual Mentoring Institute. The Mentoring Institute was developed to create a space where individuals can identify needs, consider best practices, discuss challenges, share experiences, and strengthen collaborative connections between the campus and the community. This year’s theme is “Mentoring and Social Change: Identity, Influence, & the Dynamics of Difference.” The Mentoring Institute will be held on Friday, Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Student Services Building. The institute will include breakfast and lunch, two sets of workshops, and a conversational panel. Attendance to the institute will be free of charge, but space is limited so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.


WITH WORDS IS ON THE MOVE With Words will present its first pop-up exhibit, exploring the issue of violence against women during November. With Words is a museum-style exhibit that that uses quality research and multisensory experiences to inspire compassion for global and domestic social justice issues so participants can engage in meaningful conversations to create change. The mobile museum will be available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Union Green on Nov. 2, 9, 16, 21 and 30. The initiative is co-sponsored by the Student Government Association and Women Student Union. With Words’ main exhibit will take place April 3-7 and feature the issues of gentrification, water crisis, mass incarceration and social media.

APPLY FOR THE ACC LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM The Atlantic Coast Conference, or ACC, will be hosting their annual Leadership Symposium at Wake Forest University on Friday, Feb. 24- Sunday, Feb. 26. The symposium aims to engage students with peers across the ACC. Student leaders are chosen from 15 ACC colleges and universities to learn through engagement in educational sessions, keynote addresses, topical content explorations, simulations, and experiential application. The 2017 Leadership Symposium will focus on wellbeing and social change, discussing what it means to thrive on campus and create lasting social change. Student delegates are required to attend a mandatory workshop sessions prior to the symposium, to represent FSU, uphold FSU policies and values, actively participate in the symposium, engage with other attendees, and implement what was learned through the symposium into the FSU community. To attend the symposium, students must complete an application, including short essay questions, and be selected. PRESENT FOR FALL RESEARCH DAY FSU seniors with Honors in the Major thesis research or a culmination of their research engagement area for Garnet and Gold Scholars Society are encouraged to apply as a presenter for Fall Research Day. Fall Research Day will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 16 in the Honors, Scholars, and Fellows House. Students from all majors are welcome to apply. If chosen to present, students will need to do a practice presentation a week prior to Fall Research Day in order to receive constructive feedback. Those who do not fit the criteria mentioned previously are encouraged to present at the Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium in March 2017. GET SPOOKED AT HAUNTED HARVEST On Friday, Oct. 28 come celebrate the festivities at the Student Activities Center’s annual Haunted Harvest in the Oglesby Union. Events for the harvest include pumpkin carving, paint-a-pot, cosmic bowling, free food, movies, and much more.

APPLY FOR FSU IDEA GRANTS Students interested in developing original research projects, product ideas, entrepreneurial ventures, service initiatives, and creative projects are encouraged to apply for FSU’s Idea Grant. Students from all majors are welcome to apply. Selected applicants will receive a summer stipend that can total $4,000, $5,000, or $6,000. The stipend will aid in funding the student’s self designed topic, project, performance, product, entrepreneurial venture, or creative idea. Projects must last 8-12 weeks and be under the mentorship of a supervising faculty member. Projects must culminate in an oral, poster, or creative presentation at the annual President’s Showcase. APPLY FOR GOING GLOBAL 2016 PRESENTER Students and faculty who have international experience are invited to apply to become a presenter at Going Global 2016. In celebration of International Education Week, Florida State University is hosting its 10th Annual Going Global Showcase on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 3-5 p.m. During the showcase presenters will be asked to share their international experiences and how they have impacted their lives. VISIT THE ROAD SCHOLARS SERIES Todd Anderson, an associate professor of art at Clemson University’s College of Architecture, Art, and the Humanities, will speak on the “The Last Glacier: The Intersection of Art and Science in a Radically Changing World” as part of Florida State’s Road Scholars series. Anderson’s talk will begin at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28 in the Robert Bradley Reading Room of Strozier Library. APPLY FOR UROP LEADER FSU students are invited to apply for Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, or UROP, Leader. As a UROP Leader students will attend a one-credit, bi-weekly, training course during the spring semester. The course is free of charge and is designed to prepare students to teach a UROP colloquium class consisting of 10-20 UROP students. UROP colloquium sections are thematically grouped in STEM, Humanities, Social Science, and Arts. Thus, students from across all disciplines are encouraged to apply. HAZING PREVENTION: TAKE THE PLEDGE Florida State University’s Hazing Education Initiative invites all students, faculty, and staff to sign a pledge to prevent hazing activities in campus life. Hazing activities create an unsafe campus experience and learning environment, and are detrimental to academic success, personal growth, and engagement in campus life. VISIT RAW FSU Visit RAW FSU for its third general body meeting on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Globe room 2500. RAW FSU is an organization dedicated to creating a community for individuals who have an interest in careers in natural medicine or holistic lifestyles. Thursday’s meeting will feature Dr. Carlos Ayala, who will discuss gut health, naturopathic and oriental medicine, and how running a medical practice works for doctors within this field.

Do you LOVE English? Reading? Math? Are you a JUNIOR, SENIOR, or GRADUATE STUDENT, with at least a 3.0 GPA? Do you have an EXCEPTIONAL work ethic?

The Nonprofit Internship Program is a competitive programs that allows FSU students to earn up to 12 academic elective credits serving a non-profit initiative in the Big Bend area. The program is designed for students in degree seeking programs that do not offer an internship opportunity for academic credit. Through this program students could gain experience in areas such as child development, juvenile justice, environmental issues, public health, public education, elder care, domestic abuse, poverty, homelessness, etc. Those admitted into the program would serve full-time or half-time for the full semester. A limited number of internships are available for the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Applications are considered on a first come, first serve basis until the internship slots are filled. APPLY TO INTERN IN WASHINGTON, D.C. DC Internships encourages FSU students to apply for a community leadership and engagement program with the Institute on Philanthropy and Voluntary Service. The eight-week summer program allows students to live on campus at George Washington University and intern with nongovernmental organizations while earning academic credit in economics and humanitarian aid. Students will practice networking skills and leadership through social entrepreneurship workshops, seminars on professional development, leadership projects impacting prevalent social issues, mentoring programs with DC professionals, and much more. APPLY FOR MLK BOOK STIPEND The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Book Stipend Scholarship is issued on a competitive basis to full-time undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate a commitment to service, leadership and social justice.
