By Ron Lloyd P e r h a p s y o u ' v e n o t i c e d that the latest fad i n boat d e s i g n w i t h the gofast c r o w d i s p r o d u c i n g s o m e v e r y l i g h t w e i g h t , f r a c t i o n a l - r i g b o a t s w i t h fin k e e l s a n d s p a d e r u d d e r s . S o m e t i m e s t h e y ' r e e v e n m a d e o f e x o t i c h i g h - s t r e n g t h - t o - w e i g h t , r e s i n - b o n d e d w o n d e r fibers. T h e s e b o a t s a r e v e r y fast i n light air, w o n d e r f u l l y r e s p o n s i v e a n d agile, a n d t h e i r fract i o n a l rigs m a k e t h e m c l o s e - w i n d e d a n d e a s y t o h a n d l e w i t h o u t a l a r g e crew.

I am f o r t u n a t e to o w n o n e of t h e s e b o a t s . . . e x c e p t t h a t m i n e w a s d e s i g n e d i n the first q u a r t e r o f t h i s c e n t u r y a n d built i n 1940. Its n a m e i s Blackfish. It's a B l a n c h a r d S e n i o r K n o c k a b o u t , H u l l N o . 2 2 , d e s i g n e d b y N o r m B l a n c h a r d , J r . , a n d built o n L a k e U n i o n b y t h e B l a n c h a r d Boatworks.

A t 2 6 feet o v e r a l l a n d a b o u t 3,000 p o u n d s , i t d o e s n ' t q u i t e qualify a s a U . L . D . B . , b u t i t i s light e n o u g h t o glide past m o s t I . O . R . b o a t s w h i l e their tell-tales a r e h a n g i n g s t r a i g h t d o w n a n d their c i g a r e t t e s m o k e i s g o i n g s t r a i g h t u p ; o r t o ghost o u t o f a g l a s s y h a r b o r o n a s e e m i n g l y windless s u m m e r morning.

T h e h e a d s a i l i s n i c e , h o w e v e r , for v e r y c l o s e - w i n d w o r k a n d m a k e s s i n g l e - h a n d e d reefing m o r e c o m f o r t a b l e b y a l l o w i n g the b o a t t o be h o v e - t o . I a d m i t the fin k e e l is h a r d l y a n e w i n n o v a t i o n , b u t c o n s i d e r i n g that it w a s d e s i g n e d i n t h e 1 9 2 0 s , the B l a n c h a r d ' s c a s t - i r o n , n e a r l y v e r t i c a l k e e l w a s p r o b a b l y s o m e w h a t r a d i c a l for a b o a t o f this t y p e . W i t h its 1,400-pound b a l l a s t b u l b a n d its s k e g a n d r u d d e r c o n f i g u r a t i o n , its u n d e r w a t e r profile i s s i m i l a r t o a S t a r b o a t . . . f r o m w h i c h t h e B l a n c h a r d is s a i d to h a v e e v o l v e d . T h i s d e s i g n n o t o n l y m a k e s it q u i t e a fast b o a t in light w i n d , it a l s o m a k e s it a r e a l p l e a s u r e to m a n e u v e r in tight q u a r t e r s . . . e i t h e r u n d e r s a i l or w i t h its " a e s t h e t i c a l l y c o m p a t i b l e " B r i t i s h S e a g u l l . Its f i n k e e l a n d s h a l l o w d e a d r i s e c o n t r i b u t e t o a n a b i l i t y t o sail i n t o a 3 0 - f o o t - w i d e d e a d e n d w a t e r w a y , s p i n , a n d sail back out. ( T i m i n g h e r e is o b v i o u s l y c r i t i c a l .

T h i s t u r n m u s t b e e x e c u t e d just before y o u r c r e w a b a n d o n s s h i p a n d the o c c u p a n t s o f the h o u s e b o a t a t the e n d o f t h e w a t e r w a y a b a n d o n their dinner.)

T h e B l a n c h a r d s a r e a familiar sight a r o u n d P u g e t S o u n d . N i n e t y s e v e n S e n i o r K n o c k a b o u t s w e r e built b e t w e e n t h e 1920's a n d the late 1 9 5 0 s , w h e n m a s s - p r o d u c t i o n fiberglas b o a t s b e g a n t o a l t e r t h e market. It is quite c o m m o n to be hailed by former B l a n c h a r d sailors a n d told stories of racing a n d c r u i s i n g these very same boats decades in the past.

T h e price of B l a n c h a r d s has always r e m a i n e d a relative bargain a n d the c o n d i t i o n o f t h e fleet i s g e n e r a l l y g o o d , d u e i n p a r t t o a v e r y a c t i v e c l u b . As a result, m a n y people have begun their sailing c a r e e r in a B l a n c h a r d a n d then m o v e d on as the d r e a d e d boater's disease, T w o Footitus, sets i n .

I've m a n a g e d t o s t a v e off the t w o - m o r e - w i l l - d o affliction for a b o u t 9 y e a r s n o w w i t h a s i m p l e r e m e d y : l a c k o f f u n d s . B u t I h a v e no r e g r e t s !

B o a t s i z e is, of c o u r s e , r e l a t i v e . To a d i n g h y s a i l o r , Blackfish is a big b o a t a n d to a m a x i r a c e r or o c e a n c r u i s e r , it's a s m a l l b o a t . Blackfish is 2 4 feet o v e r a l l , n o t i n c l u d i n g the b o o m k i n , w i t h a s e v e n foot b e a m . S h e d r a w s a l m o s t four feet a n d her m a s t r i s e s 3 5 feet a b o v e the s u r f a c e .

T h e small but a d e q u a t e c a b i n has two b u n k s w h i c h m a k e into a large double by raising the floorboards; a built-in i c e b o x ; p r e s s u r i z e d fresh water; a gimbaled butane mini-galley; a c o u p l e of small cabinets a n d full k n e e l i n g h e a d r o o m . ( O n e n i c e a d v a n t a g e t o t h e B l a n c h a r d ' s c a b i n i s that I'm n e v e r t o t a l l y b r o k e . I c a n a l w a y s find c h a n g e for t h e l a u n d r o m a t in the bilge as a r e s u l t of h a v i n g to d r e s s in a h o r i z o n t a l position.)

T h e c o c k p i t i s self-bailing, six feet l o n g a n d just w i d e e n o u g h t o b r a c e y o u r feet a g a i n s t t h e o p p o s i t e settee w h e n h e e l i n g . I t c a n a l s o b e m a d e i n t o a n o t h e r d o u b l e b u n k b y r a i s i n g the f l o o r b o a r d s . U n d e r p r o t e c t i o n o f a b o o m t e n t , this i s a c t u a l l y t h e f a v o r e d p l a c e t o s l e e p i n the s u m m e r .

A l l i n a l l , the c r u i s i n g a c c o m m o d a t i o n s a r e q u i t e c o m f o r t a b l e for t w o a n d w o r k a b l e for t w o a d u l t s a n d t w o k i d s . R u m o r s o f s i x o r m o r e h e a d i n g t o the i s l a n d s h a v e b e e n h e a r d b u t not s u b s t a n t i a t e d .

A s I u n d e r s t a n d it, m o s t all B l a n c h a r d S e n i o r K n o c k a b o u t s w e r e built o n c o m m i s s i o n a n d the n a t u r a l e v o l u t i o n o f the d e s i g n a n d e a c h o w n e r ' s p r e f e r e n c e s r e s u l t e d i n m o s t b o a t s b e i n g s l i g h t l y different. I b e l i e v e that the first b o a t s w e r e a c t u a l l y s h o r t e r , h a d r o u n d m a s t s a n d r o u n d c a b i n s i d e p o r t s . V e r y e a r l y , the d e s i g n w a s c h a n g e d t o 2 4 feet o n d e c k p l u s a t w o foot b o o m k i n a n d t h e p o r t s w e r e c h a n g e d t o t h e familiar l o n g r e c t a n g l e w i t h a n a r c h e d t o p , a B l a n c h a r d t r a d e m a r k .

T h e o r i g i n a l k e e l ballast w a s 1,200 p o u n d s o f c a s t i r o n , w h i c h p r o v e d s o m e w h a t t e n d e r . W h e n Blackfish w a s b u i l t , 2 0 0 p o u n d s o f l e a d w a s a d d e d t o t h e b o t t o m o f the k e e l a n d s u b s e q u e n t b o a t s h a d t h e k e e l s cast 2 0 0 p o u n d s h e a v i e r a n d t w o i n c h e s d e e p e r . A s far a s I k n o w , Blackfish i s the o n l y o n e w i t h l e a d . M o s t o f t h e e a r l i e r b o a t s h a v e s i n c e h a d a 2 0 0 - p o u n d c a s t i r o n s h o e b o l t e d t o the b o t t o m o f t h e o r i g i n a l keel.

A n o t h e r u n i q u e a l t e r a t i o n t o Blackfish w a s a n a d d i t i o n a l 1 8 i n c h e s o f cabin length forward of the mast, m a k i n g the floor-stepped m a s t penetrate the c a b i n top rather than the foredeck. A l t h o u g h I like this a r r a n g e m e n t v e r y m u c h , o t h e r s a p p a r e n t l y d i d n o t . A l l later B l a n c h a r d s r e v e r t e d t o the s h o r t e r c a b i n .

O n e o f the m a j o r c h a n g e s i n t h e d e s i g n o f the c l a s s o c c u r r e d following t h e S e c o n d W o r l d W a r . T h e h u l l w a s l e n g t h e n e d t o 2 6 feet a n d t h e b o o m k i n w a s e l i m i n a t e d . T h e t w o different h u l l l e n g t h s h a v e l e d t o a

m i s c o n c e p t i o n a b o u t the n a m e o f t h e c l a s s . S o m e i n s i s t o n c a l l i n g t h e 24-foot h u l l s J u n i o r K n o c k a b o u t s . A c t u a l l y , B l a n c h a r d J u n i o r K n o c k a b o u t s a r e 21-foot d a y s a i l e r s w i t h n o c a b i n . B o t h t h e 24-foot p r e - w a r h u l l s a n d the 26-foot p o s t - w a r h u l l s a r e p r o p e r l y c a l l e d S e n i o r s .

O k a y , s o m a y b e I d o n ' t o w n a n e w h i g h - t e c h u l t r a - l i g h t . M a y b e its p o u n d s - o f - d i s p l a c e m e n t - p e r - w a t e r l i n e l e n g t h r a t i o isn't q u i t e a s g o o d as the n e w sailing dragsters. B u t m a y b e it wouldn't hurt to look at s o m e o t h e r r a t i o s o n c e in a w h i l e . . . l i k e h o u r s - o f - e n j o y m e n t - p e r - d o l l a r . or knots-to-windward-per-size-of m o n t h l y payments. O r how about the ultimate

T h i s year's waterfront o p e r a t i o n will c o n t r i b u t e m o r e than ever to the s u c c e s s o f the s h o w b y o f f e r i n g a n i m p r o v e d " c h a r t e r s e r v i c e . " G o o d b o a t s a r e n e e d e d t o p r o v i d e a fleet o f r o w i n g a n d s a i l i n g b o a t s t o b e u s e d i n the " c h a r t e r " o p e r a t i o n . A l l b o a t s m u s t b e m a n n e d b y a C W B m e m b e r (usually t h e o w n e r o r a f a m i l y m e m b e r c a p a b l e o f handling the boat). A m a x i m u m p a y l o a d of three passengers is s u g g e s t e d , a n d a t t r a c t i v e r o w i n g o r s a i l i n g b o a t s o f 1 2 t o 1 8 feet a r e desirable because of b o t h the limited d o c k space a n d passengercarrying requirements.

N a t u r e gave us the l a k e , a little g l a c i a l h o l l o w . A f t e r 12,000 y e a r s of e n v i r o n m e n t a l fine t u n i n g , l o c a l N a t i v e s b e g a n t o call i t T e n a s C h u c k " t h e little w a t e r . " A s t r e a m f l o w e d f r o m the n o r t h w e s t c o r n e r o f t h e l a k e , w h e r e t h e F r e m o n t B r i d g e i s n o w , t o S a l m o n B a y , a n d t h e n i t f l o w e d ( n o w f i l l e d in) t o S m i t h C o v e . A f l o o d i n g tide w o u l d p r o v i d e a p a d d l e - f r e e r i d e f r o m the S o u n d t o the l a k e .

F r o m the first c l u s t e r o f c a b i n s a l o n g Elliott B a y i n 1851, t h e p i o n e e r s i n d u s t r i o u s l y r e m a d e t h e l a n d s c a p e o f S e a t t l e . B u t little c h a n g e o c c u r r e d a r o u n d L a k e U n i o n . T h e shorelines were too steep to be " u s e f u l . " I n t i m e , a few s e t t l e m e n t s w e r e c a r v e d o u t o f t h e l a k e s i d e forest - F r e m o n t , S u n n y s i d e a n d L a t o n a . I t w a s e a s i e r t o c o m m u t e t o t o w n a b o a r d t h e 24-foot s t e a m e r City of Latona, t h a n to h e w t r a i l s through the steel-wool u n d e r b r u s h .

has given the lake b o t t o m in the vicinity of W a t e r w a y 4 a c h o c o l a t e p u d d i n g c o n s i s t e n c y . ( " W h i c h i s t h e c o r r e c t a n c h o r for this. T h e E n g i n e e r i n g D e p a r t m e n t h a d a n o r a n g e - p a i n t e d 36-foot landing craft, " P e l i c a n P e t e . " T h i s w a s the L a k e U n i o n street s w e e p e r i n t h e 1960's a n d e a r l y 70's. T h e final u s e b e f o r e C W B h a s b e e n s t o r a g e of materials a n d e q u i p m e n t u s e d in city r o a d m a i n t e n a n c e .

T o d a y , t h e r e i s h e a v y c o m m e r c i a l m a r i t i m e traffic o n L a k e U n i o n , b u t it's b e e n a l o n g t i m e s i n c e a n a p p l e s l o o p w a s l o o k i n g for a p l a c e t o u n l o a d . M o s t w a t e r w a y s are u n k n o w n , u n u s e d a n d l a c k p u b l i c a c c e s s .

T h e r e w a s g o o d cedar along the shores. C h i e f C h i - S i a k - K a , k n o w n b y t h e n e w f o l k s i n his n e i g h b o r h o o d a s " I n d i a n J o h n , " h a d a n i c e o p e r a t i o n c a r v i n g c e d a r s into g o o d lake c a n o e s . H i s spot w a s the p r e s e n t site o f t h e S e a t t l e Y a c h t C l u b .

A few o u t p o s t h o u s e b o a t s a p p e a r e d , a n d a c o u p l e of s a w m i l l s , a n d a d o c k for c o a l b r o u g h t b y b a r g e f r o m L a k e W a s h i n g t o n . T h e c o a l w a s m i n e d i n N e w c a s t l e a n d s h i p p e d b y rail t o L a k e W a s h i n g t o n . T h e first t u g for t h e c o a l m i n e r e a c h e d L a k e W a s h i n g t o n b y s t e a m i n g u p t h e D u w a m i s h , G r e e n a n d C e d a r rivers from the S o u n d . T h i s required crossing several sand bars. T h e technique used was a kind of nautical pole-vaulting. L o n g , heavy timbers were s e c u r e d about midship on e a c h s i d e o f t h e t u g , w i t h a pivot bolt t h r o u g h t h e guard, sheer plank and clamp. The timber was angled forward.

W h e n t h e t i m b e r hit t h e s a n d , the m o m e n t u m of the t u g w o u l d lift i t u p a n d o v e r the shallow spot.

F r o n t i e r i n g e n u i t y at w o r k . . .

There was an o o m p a h G e r m a n band every summer at Jensen's G a r d e n , where the N O A A base now stands. D e e r c a m e d o w n t o drink a t t h e g r a v e l b a r off G a s P l a n t P o i n t .

W h a t a m a g i c m o m e n t t h i s m u s t h a v e b e e n 100 y e a r s ago. N o r o a d s a r o u n d the lake, a lonely steam whistle infrequently signaling a distant c i v i l i z a t i o n . T h e r e w e r e e l k , d e e r , b e a r a n d c o u g a r i n the w o o d s . T h e l a k e h a d a full c o m p l e m e n t o f b a s s , c r a p p i e , p e r c h , c a t f i s h , c h u b , a n d s o m e t r o u t , i n w a t e r still c l e a n e n o u g h t o d r i n k . C o n s i d e r i n g t h e inevitable m a r c h of manifest destiny, not a b a d scene.

I n 1889, W a s h i n g t o n b e c a m e a s t a t e . O u r first l e g i s l a t o r s d e c i d e d t o preserve the future needs of w a t e r b o r n e c o m m e r c e by setting aside p a r c e l s a l o n g o u r n a v i g a b l e w a t e r s for t e m p o r a r y m o o r a g e . T h e s e were called W a t e r w a y s . T h e y exist from the C o l u m b i a River to the S a n J u a n Islands. L a k e U n i o n r e m a i n e d virtually u n d e v e l o p e d until the c o m p l e t i o n o f t h e L o c k s , offering a c o n n e c t i o n w i t h P u g e t S o u n d , i n 1916. T w e n t y - f o u r w a t e r w a y s w e r e p l a t t e d i n L a k e U n i o n . T h e s e w e r e set a s i d e for a p p l e s l o o p s , c o r d w o o d b a r g e s a n d l u m b e r s c h o o n e r s .

T h e first d e v e l o p m e n t o f W a t e r w a y 4 , o u r s i t e , w a s a l a n d i n g p l a c e for I n d i a n s c o m i n g t o S e a t t l e f r o m a c r o s s t h e S o u n d . T h e y p r e f e r r e d this s p o t r a t h e r t h a n t h e s t i c k y m u d b e a c h a n d s t e e p c l a y cliffs o f Elliott B a y . F r o m W a t e r w a y 4 t h e r e w a s a l e v e l p a t h ( n o w W e s t l a k e A v e n u e ) t o the S e a t t l e s e t t l e m e n t .

N e x t o n the site c a m e the c o a l d o c k . T h e first t u g i n L a k e U n i o n w a s a kit b o a t , a s s e m b l e d o n the s h o r e . T h e c o a l b a r g e f r o m L a k e W a s h i n g t o n d i s c h a r g e d twice a day at M o n t l a k e . T h e coal was handl o a d e d i n t o tiny r a i l r o a d c a r s , w h i c h w e r e h o r s e - d r a w n a c r o s s t h e i s t h m u s a n d r e l o a d e d b y h a n d i n t o the L a k e U n i o n b a r g e . T h i s l o a d w a s t o w e d t o the W a t e r w a y 4 l a n d i n g , u n l o a d e d b y h a n d a g a i n i n t o m o r e railway cars, then hauled d o w n t r a c k s alongside W e s t l a k e to Pike S t r e e t . T h e t r a c k s r a n w e s t o n P i k e t o the bluff a b o v e Elliott B a y ( p r e s e n t site o f the P i k e P l a c e M a r k e t ) . S t e a m v e s s e l s c o u l d m o o r a t a d o c k a g a i n s t t h e h i l l s i d e , a n d the c o a l w o u l d b e t u m b l e d d o w n a c h u t e into the ship's b u n k e r s .

Chief Chi-Siak-Ka, known to white settlers as "Indian John," carved cedar canoes at the present site of the Seattle Yacht Club. CWB's Waterway 4 site was a favorite landing spot for Indians when they visited the modest settlement of Seattle.

They would walk to town from Lake Union over a path that roughly followed the route of today's Westlake Avenue. b e c a m e t h e c a t a l y s t that p r o m p t e d b u r e a u c r a t s t o r e e x a m i n e the dusty waterway regulations a n d to review their present functions.
