WELCOME Growing up in the Puget Sound region it seemed that everyone had a chance to get in a boat on the lakes or the Sound. Well, I have learned that that is not quite true, but I think it should be. All of our residents should have the opportunity to enjoy the water, whether they are looking for peace or exhilaration, and The Center for Wooden Boats is here to create those opportunities. If our 2015 season was any indication, folks are eager to get in wooden boats and cast off. Most of our programs grew by double-digits and we introduced thousands of residents to the water. In 2016 we are offering a number of new programs, both indoors and on the docks. This year you can learn why the wind blows from the north in the summer and the south in the winter. You can learn to make an eyesplice, a Turk’s head and a monkey’s fist. Kids can not only learn to sail, they can learn safe motorboat operation.
Registration Policies TUITION & PAYMENT Full payment for courses under $500 is required at the time of registration. For courses costing more than $500, we ask you to pay one-half of the total cost at the time of registration. The remainder is due 45 days before the class begins. Tuition is on a per-person basis and includes a $15 one-time, non-refundable administration fee. Private lesson packages are excluded from partial payments options. CANCELLATION POLICY For all course registrations, including youth classes, the following cancellation policy applies. For private sailing lessons and boatbuilding classes, the cancellation policy outlined at the time of booking and in the confirmation email is enforced. Cancellation/change outside of 45 days = full refund less $15 admin fee. Cancellation/change within 45 – 7 days prior to start date = a $15 admin fee and tuition credit for the remaining amount towards a course within the same calendar year. There is no refund. Cancellation/change within 7 days of start date = 50% tuition credit of course fee available towards a course within the same calendar year. No refund or credit available after the class has started In case of emergency or insufficient number of registrations, CWB reserves the right to cancel a course and refund the participants in full. Because of this policy, we strongly urge you to buy refundable airline tickets or flight insurance. CWB will not be responsible for any loss on nonrefundable airline tickets. COURSE DETAILS Upon receipt of payment, we will provide you with relevant course information, including itinerary, materials list, suggested tools list, clothing list, accommodations, directions and other pertinent information. Please read the information carefully before coming to class. Materials costs are included in course fees unless otherwise noted in the course description. We supply tools needed for courses, but encourage you to bring your own for certain courses. RISK All of our courses involve some level of risk. You assume full responsibility for your own safety and must provide your own health and accident insurance. You will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to participation.

And this year, for the first time, The Center for Wooden Boats will offer its excellent youth sailing program on the east side of Lake Washington. We will have a full summer schedule of beginning sailing lessons, alternating between Newcastle Beach Park in Bellevue and Medina Beach Park in Medina. We will still, of course, have our full range of youth classes on Lake Union. So look through this catalog and find the class or activity that will get you and your family and friends out on the water—it’s all part of life here in Puget Sound.

The Center for Wooden Boats at Cama Beach State Park is set in a spectacular, 433-acre waterfront location against a forested backdrop. It is connected by a mile-long trail to Camano Island State Park, a 134-acre camping park. Both parks are open for day use or overnight stays year-round.

The Center for Wooden Boats at South Lake Union is a hub of hands-on learning year-round. Boat rentals, classes and workshops, field trips, lectures and opportunities for direct experience on the water and at the docks are just a few of the things you’ll find when you visit.

Pond Boat Sailing Rent a Pirate Pond Boat to sail on Lake Union Park’s Model Boat Pond. These 39" pond boats are scale models of the R-Boat Pirate, which is on exhibit at our docks at South Lake Union. Checkout Requirements
Before using our sailboats, you must pass a short checkout sail to earn your livery card and make sure that you are comfortable handling traditional small boats. Checkouts take approximately 30 minutes, and must be scheduled in advance. Schedule a sailing checkout and review a list of required skills at cwb.org/rent/checkout
While maintaining control of the boat at all times, using clear voice commands and proper body motions, the Sailor must complete the following maneuvers single-handed. Multiple attempts are fine, given that the Sailor maintains control of the vessel at all times:

This is the signature CWB learn-to-sail program for adults and families. Students learn basic boat handling skills that are the foundation for a lifetime of sailing. Lessons are taught by dedicated, trained sailing instructors in CWB’s fleet of classic Blanchard Junior Knockabouts. The course begins with Shore School from 12:30 – 2:30pm the first day of each session. Following Shore School, 12 hours of on-the-water lessons are scheduled according to the student’s schedule during the session dates. On-the-water lessons are available Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00am to 12:00pm and 12:30pm to 2:30pm year-round, and weekday evenings from mid-April through August. Each student signs up for six 2-hour lessons, and will be sailing with 2-3 students per instructor. Date

This refresher is for Sailors who have a current Livery Card at The Center for Wooden Boats, but have not sailed in a while and wish to sail with an instructor's supervision before going out on their own again. It's a great idea for fall SailNOW! graduates who might not have sailed through the winter to take this refresher and gear up for summer sailing. The refresher is two hours long and begins with a brief rigging review. Then students will sail in groups of 2-3 per boat to review all basic maneuvers and docking; the instructor will supervise from the safety launch. Students will sail in any of our sloop-rigged boats, including BJK, Lightning or Mercury. Date

Have fun racing in classic wooden boats! RaceNOW! is an opportunity for intermediate skippers and crew to learn the fundamentals of sailboat racing. Each series starts with a Thursday race clinic facilitated by Oliver Davis. Racers will learn racing strategy, tactics and the basics of the racing rules, as well as have the opportunity to sail for 2 hours to practice starts and maneuvers with coaching from the instructor. The Thursday clinic is followed by 3 Friday nights of racing to put what you learn to the test! Racers will sail in teams of 2-3 per boat, in our fleet of Blanchard Jr. Knockabouts for some friendly competition. For new sailors, crewing during a race is one of the best ways to solidify your basic skills. Sign up as a team with friends, family or co-workers, or meet new people.

ADULT MARITIME SKILLS We employ experienced and talented boatbuilders and craftspeople to pass along their traditional skills through hands-on workshops designed for people of all skill levels. Our mission to preserve maritime heritage starts with you, whether its learning general woodworking, sailing or building the boat of your dreams.
Varnishing: An Introduction to Brightwork Repair and Maintenance This two-day class will start with the basics of bright finishing and take the novice step-by-step through the process of varnishing bare or previously finished wood, with an emphasis on practicality. This class is aimed at those taking an active role in maintaining their vessels who have always been mystified by the finicky nature of varnish and the myriad myths surrounding it. Learn how to repair and rehabilitate varnished surfaces that have been damaged by wear and tear or neglect. Dates

ADULT MARITIME SKILLS Beginning Woodworking This beginning woodworking class is for anyone interested in learning how to use basic wood-working tools skillfully and safely. First you’ll learn how to use basic hand and power tools, followed by the larger table saws, planers and other machines. With that mastered, you’ll move on to basic joinery, laminating, fastening and finishing. Marlinspike, Splicing and Knotwork Classes Learn the ropes! CWB’s marlinspike and splicing series will help you get comfortable with splicing and basic rope work. The first class teaches the basic 3-strand splice, which should be part of every sailor’s toolkit. If you want to take it a step further, we offer the double braid splicing class, which is a critical skill to have with modern day braided line. Ditty Bag Workshop Learn how to make your very own Sailor’s ditty bag in this 3-evening class. You’ll learn how to use a pattern to cut the shape from a piece of canvas. After hand sewing it together to create the basic bag, you’ll hem the top and attach a series of grommets along the edge. The final step will be to splice and whip a handle. Learn basic woodworking skills utilizing several different tools to make your own set of Shaker pantry boxes in this two day workshop at scenic Cama Beach. These nesting boxes, made from bending wood strips into oval shapes were a way to store food before the age of plastic bins. You will learn how to craft five boxes of graduated size that can nest inside each other for easy storage, or you can put them all out on display to show off your handiwork. Take home the skills necessary to restore your own wooden canoe! Join us for the weekend to repair and restore traditional wood-canvas canoes. The Center for Wooden Boats is excited to be partnering with Chesapeake Light Craft to provide build your own boat classes at CWB's Northlake Union campus in 2016. In these week long classes students will be guided through the construction of one of the CLC kit boats listed below.
Northeaster Dories with John Harris May 23-28

Graceful round-sided lapstrake dories like this 17-footer were once the primary recreational craft on the New England coast. You’ll assemble a faithful reproduction in just a week, using plywood and epoxy. Capacity is three adults, and you can add a sailing rig after the class if you choose. By the end of the week, hulls will be assembled, ready for sanding and finishing at home. If there’s time, we’ll get started on sailing rigs during the class for those who choose that option.

Shearwater and Wood Duck Kayaks with Tyson Trudel July 11-16
Kit Options (choose one):
In this week-long class you will build your own Shearwater 14, 16, 17, Sport or Sectional Sport kayak from a Chesapeake Light Craft kit. Additional options include the Wood Duck 10, 12, 14, and Wood Duck Double. Starting with pre-cut plywood parts, we will assemble the hull and deck of the kayak using copper wires and epoxy glue. After the class, your boat will be ready to sand and paint or varnish.
Annapolis Wherries with Tyson Trudel August 15-20 In this five-and-a-half-day course, each student will build an Annapolis Wherry or an Annapolis Wherry Tandem from a Chesapeake Light Craft kit. The Annapolis Wherry is modeled after the graceful 19th century livery boats used on the River Thames. While fixed seats are standard, the Annapolis Wherry is primarily a slidingseat boat.

The precut hull planks are scarfed together, and then connected to the frames and each other with copper wire stitches, then fixed in place with epoxy fillets. Next come thwarts, knees, rails, and air tanks. Fiberglass cloth on the bottom inside and out provides abrasion resistance. The instructor will discuss the proper way to sand and paint or varnish the boat. We recommend that students electing to build the Annapolis Wherry Tandem in the class do so with a partner.
PAYMENT OPTIONS: Payment Options: If doing partial payments one-half of the total tuition cost is due at the time of registration. The remainder is due 45 days before the class begins. Team-building games, rigging, knot tying, tool use and demonstrations are preparation for sailing adventures and boat construction. Our talented and dedicated team of instructors are US Sailing, First Aid and CPR certified. They are trained and experienced in working with youth to ensure safety and best practices onthe-water and in the shop.

STEAM Sailing for Girls! Frog Prints e! and The Center for Wooden Boats are pairing up to encourage young women to build leadership capabilities and a lifelong love of science, technology, engineering, art, math, and sailing (STEAM). This program provides hands-on learning opportunities that encourage girls to explore fields like physics, marine engineering, civil engineering, marine biology, hydrology, and technology through sailing. In Part I, youth will 'lean into' the hard sciences and engineering by building Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV) and study real-life methods used in exploration, underwater topography and mapping. In Part II, participants will discover and experiment on-the-water with the physics and skills behind sailing, like: analyzing why a sail several times a person's body weight can be raised; or how to use the wind, calculating boat speed, using lift to get to your destination and center of lateral resistance, balance and trim.

Join us in providing groups of students with dynamic, hands-on programs that extend learning beyond the traditional school day. CWB can work with you to design a program in which students have fun in an outdoor setting while developing self-confidence, patience, teamwork and decision making skills.
We are pleased to partner with the Washington Service Corps to provide AmeriCorps Members the opportunity to serve the broader community through our Youth Programs. AmeriCorps Members play a significant role in increasing the impact of our youth programs for at-risk and underserved youth.
Our programs promote teamwork and empower young people by building confidence through competence.
High School Program Assistant Participants will work directly with our wooden boats and the people who use them. Choose to learn about traditional sail and row boats; help teach Youth Sailing; help maintain our fleet, or assist with Livery.
Positions are posted to the National AmeriCorps website in July.

FIELD TRIPS How to Schedule a Field Trip
Lake Union History Afloat Lake Union History Afloat offers students a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with hands-on experience. Each grade-specific module includes a shore-based activity and a chance to paddle as a group to a related site of historical significance on Lake Union. Each program is designed to support Washington State and Seattle Public Schools curricula in history, science and art. Choose the module that best fits the interest and age group of your classroom. What Floats Your Boat? Exploring Buoyancy Learn all about how boats float by exploring the concepts of buoyancy and displacement. Each student will build their own wooden toy boat and have a chance to float it, raise it and lower it in our model drydock (a floating dock used to pull boats out of the water for maintenance). Then we’ll travel by boat on Lake Union to see full-sized boats and the real, working drydock at Lake Union Drydock. Founded in 1916, it is one of the oldest businesses in Seattle
Grades 2-3 Supports National Science Foundation Kits: “Balancing & Weighing” and “Liquids & Solids”
Native Seattle Long before the city grew up around it, Lake Union was a bustling hub of activity for Coast Salish communities; native culture still thrives here today. Students will explore elements of Coast Salish art and design through hands-on activities and crafts, learn Salish names for sites of historical significance in Seattle and travel on Lake Union in a native watercraft.

We provide hands-on educational opportunities year-round for students from preschool through high school. Jumbo Field Trip Bring your group of up to 60 students to CWB where they'll learn to use traditional hand tools and construct a toy boat that they can take home with them. 30 students at a time will build toy boats while the other 30 students enjoy a self-guided tour of Lake Union Park and the Historic Ships Wharf.

Tools and Tales Explore our docks and listen to stories about boats, maritime culture and the environment. After storytime each child gets hands-on experience with traditional hand tools while building their own wooden toy boats to take home.

Umiaq Adventure Umiaqs have been built by Arctic civilizations for over 5,000 years. Students will work together as a team to paddle one of these traditional skin-boats. They'll also learn how to use hand tools and build a wooden toy boat to take home.

PARTNER PROGRAMS NORTHWEST SEAPORT Northwest Seaport, a maritime heritage organization, shares the history and stories of National Historic Landmark vessels docked at the Historic Ships Wharf in Lake Union Park, Seattle. Tugboat Experience Overnight aboard Arthur Foss for an immersive hands-on experience. Individuals, families and groups learn about its classic American story, neighboring historic vessels, and Lake Union’s environs in the heart of modern Seattle. Participants receive an orientation and tour from engine room to wheelhouse. Overnighters take advantage of standard 20th century tugboat crew amenities, including flush toilets, hot showers and amazing local views of Lake Union. Plan on bringing/making meals (or eating out) and other overnight necessities. Fresh linens and wool blankets provided. Whether overnighting for one, two or more nights, the Arth u r F o ss overnight education program provides a slice of Puget Sound maritime history with accommodations.
Volunteer work parties Work Parties get you into maritime heritage and sometimes grease or sawdust at the Historic Ships Wharf. Join other Northwest Seaport volunteers aboard Lightship No. 83 S w ifts u re, Arth u r F o s s and troller Tw iligh t for getting things done and working for fun. Maritime Music Programs Maritime music includes sea chanteys (work songs), forebitters (leisure songs), and tunes from the diverse countries and cultures of mariners themselves. Sea Chanteys and other maritime music celebrate our connections to the sea, boats, and those who sail them. They include work songs and foc’sle ditties with great choruses that tie our present day maritime traditions and lore to those of the past. The call-and-response form makes these songs easy to learn and fun to sing for adults and children alike. Come and lead a song of the sea or just join in on the chorus. Events include monhtly chantey sings, maritime concerts, and stories of the sea. Most events are free. See website for details.
Tugboat Storytime Second & fourth Thursdays | 11am - 12pm Ages 1 to 8 | FREE | donations are welcome! Tugboat Storytime provides an engaging environment for younger children to enjoy maritime literature and boats. Join other pre-schoolers and parents aboard the Arth u r F o s s to listen to sea stories and maritime picture books read aloud.

PARTNER PROGRAMS VIRGINIA V The Virginia V Foundation preserves and activates the 94 year-old National Historic Landmark the steam ship VIRGINIA V. Located at the Historic Ships Wharf in Lake Union Park.
Volunteering Join their team of incredible volunteers that operate and preserve the VIRGINIA V. Volunteers steer the ship, operate the 110 year old steam engine, and keep the old girl ship shape. All skill levels welcome.
Rentals One of only two wooden steamships in the whole country certified by the US Coast Guard for charters. Hosting an event? Getting married? Consider renting the SS VIRGINIA V for your next event.

M/V LOTUS The Motor Vessel Lotus was built in Seattle in 1909, designed to transport her wealthy owner and his family up and down the Inside Passage between Puget Sound in Alaska. Today, she transports visitors and volunteers back in time as a functioning relic of an age where the nautical history of Puget Sound was transitioning from strictly working vessels to and environment where sport and leisure were also beginning to become characteristic of the local waters.
Tours Lotus is open for tours Thursday through Sunday, 11am to 4pm, year-round while at the dock on South Lake Union. In the late summer they cruise out into the Salish Sea to visit other ports, check their Events page for updates.
