We are those who what to see a c o l l e c t i o n of good s m a l l b o a t s , b u i l t i n the traditional manner, s i t t i n g i n the water f o r the use and enjoyment o f the p u b l i c .

We a r e t h o s e who want to see our s m a l l c r a f t maritime h e r i t a g e maintained; to see a p l a c e f o r r e g a t t a s and rendezvous o f t r a d i t i o n a l s m a l l c r a f t ; t o see i n depth s t u d i e s o f t r a d i t i o n a l s m a l l b o a t s ; to see a p l a c e f o r seminars and workshops t a p p i n g the e x p e r i e n c e o f o l d masters i n h i s t o r y , d e s i g n , m a t e r i a l s , c o n s t r u c t i o n , and maintenance.

We v i s u a l i z e a p l a c e where the o l d s k i l l s can be l e a r n e d by new g e n e r a t i o n s .

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM BEGINS

CREDIT DUE

As a major s t e p to expand the ongoing f u n c t i o n s of The C e n t e r , an open-ended s e r i e s of seminars and l e c t u r e s on boat b u i l d i n g , r e p a i r and maintenance o f wooden b o a t s , and seamanship s k i l l s was i n s t i t u t e d i n January.

The handsome s k e t c h of the M a n t i n i c u s peapod, f e a t u r e d i n the head o f I s s u e One, and duly c r e d i t e d to the A p p r e n t i c e s h o p , B a t h , Maine, a l s o s h o u l d have been c r e d i t e d t o the a r t i s t , Dorothy Lee.

The f i r s t s e r i e s f e a t u r e d Joe Trumbly on Plugging i n t o B o a t b u i l d i n g , Dick Wagner on Performance C h a r a c t e r i s t i c s o f T r a d i t i o n a l Small C r a f t , and s e v e r a l e x p e r t s o n Contemporary P r o d u c t s f o r Wooden B o a t b u i l d i n g and R e p a i r .

We a p o l o g i z e f o r the o v e r s i g h t .

Response to the f i r s t s e r i e s exceeded the Program Committee's p r o j e c t i o n s , and s i g n i f i c a n t l y i n c r e a s e d C e n t e r membership.

T h e second s e r i e s , d u r i n g March, f e a t u r e s Dr. L i n n Smith i n t h r e e s e s s i o n s on M a r l i n s p i k e Seamanship, Bob P i c k e t t on Wooden Boat M a t e r i a l s : How and Where t o P i c k 'Em, and C a r l Harper o n F i x i n g and R e f i n i s h i n g f o r t h e Wooden Boat Owner.

The program i s d e s i g n e d t o a p p e a l t o the n o v i c e , the more e x p e r i e n c e d e n t h u s i a s t , and the p r o f e s s i o n a l .

Suggestions f o r f u t u r e s u b j e c t s are i n v i t e d ; w r i t e t o D i c k Wagner.

We hope t o b u i l d t h i s y e a r ' s i n i t i a l e f f o r t s i n t o a r e g u l a r annual s e r i e s o f e d u c a t i o n a l and i n f o r m a t i o n a l o p p o r t u n i t i e s f o r the growing members h i p o f The C e n t e r , and f o r i n t e r e s t e d others.

CENTER MEETINGS M e e t i n g s of The C e n t e r f o r Wooden Boats are h e l d on the f i r s t Tuesday of each month, at 7:30 PM, at t h e O l d Boathouse, 2770 W e s t l a k e Avenue North, S e a t t l e .

WOODEN BOAT SHOW PLANNING UNDERWAY

RESEARCHERS NEED HELP

For the t h i r d y e a r , we are p l a n n i n g a major showing of wooden b o a t s and r e l a t e d i n t e r e s t s - - t h i s year running J u l y 6 to 8, subject to f i n a l approval of those dates by the Commandant, N a v a l Reserve C e n t e r .

Research has begun to g a t h e r a major c o l l e c t i o n o f photos o f t r a d i t i o n a l wooden s m a l l b o a t s i n d i g e n o u s t o t h e Northwest.

We hope t o p r e s e n t a t o p p e r t o t h e f i r s t two shows, w i t h d i s p l a y s o n l a n d and i n t h e w a t e r o f s t r i k i n g examples o f wooden b o a t s , wooden b o a t b u i l d i n g , and a l l t h e a c c e s s o r i e s o f our a d d i c t i o n .

T h i s y e a r ' s show w i l l r e p e a t t h e boat r a f f l e f e a t u r e o f l a s t y e a r , and i s p l a n n e d t o i n c l u d e t h e s a l e and a u c t i o n of marine items c o n t r i b u t e d by members.

We need o l d y a c h t i n g magazines, c h a r t s , hardware -- a n y t h i n g we can t u r n i n t o cash to s u p p o r t the C e n t e r ' s development.

C o n t r i b u t i o n s may be d i r e c t e d to D i c k Wagner a t t h e O l d Boathouse.

A p l a n n e d f e a t u r e o f t h i s y e a r ' s show, we hope, w i l l be one o r more p u b l i c p r e s e n t a t i o n s by a u t h o r i t i e s on wooden boats.
