THANKS TO THE incredible

support of our community, CDS students began the school year with the thrill of having lunch in the new Niczowski, Temovsky, Arrigo Dining Hall. I have heard from many parents that the meal choices are the talk of the day on the ride home, and that our children are delighting in enjoying healthy choices, even some that parents have had difficulty getting them to accept at home.

While this publication’s focus is on all that we have accomplished thus far, the Making Connections campaign is not quite finished yet. The Dining Hall is only one fifth of the area of the entire building project. Now we eagerly await final completion of the Senior School portion, which will conclude the largest campaign build in CDS history. I

I extend a sincere thank-you to our volunteer Directors, each of whom dedicates substantial hours of their personal time to govern the School and advance this project toward the finish line. CDS is fortunate to have such a dynamic group willing to lend both time and financial support to help make these visionary projects a reality for our students. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our departing Board members – Marin Guy, Kent Harris, Susan McVey, Tracey Riley, Paul Wolfe and Melissa Yang – for their dedication and support.

I also welcome our new Board members: Paul Ghezzi, Glenn Henderson, David Myers, Blaise Tomkay, Melanie Ward and Michelle Weiss.

The Making Connections campaign is very close to achieving its fundraising goal of $10 million. This is due to our community’s continued dedication and generous support. It is just one significant indicator of the overwhelming momentum that CDS is currently enjoying. Additional indicators of the

growth and health of our school are highlighted in the CDS By the Numbers and New at CDS sections of this report.

Another priority for the Board this year is to finalize the next strategic plan, working together with Mr. Liggett and our talented staff. We have incorporated the community feedback that we solicited this time last year and look forward to launching the 20162021 plan next spring. Stay tuned for communications to follow!

Thank you to our Head of School, Mr. John Liggett, and his staff for their substantial efforts, dedication and support in advancing the interests of the School and our students. While our bricks and mortar provide infrastructure to our community, our highly admired school would be nothing more than buildings and fields without their passion – from tears to cheers.

Message from the Head of School

Through the Looking Glass busy tradesfolk, as if in the stuff of myth, legend and folklore, is the new portion of the Senior School.

EVEN THOUGH we have been

fully engaged in a major building project for the past several years, my morning walk into school and down the hallways has yet to change substantially. That state won’t hold for long, however, as the construction of a passageway that connects the old Senior School to the new has started to take shape!

As I walk down the existing and familiar corridor, I pass Room 9¾. No kidding, that is the actual room number, an obvious reference to the Harry Potter series and Platform 9¾. Up until a month ago, Room 9¾ had a window in its door frame that usually had the blind drawn. But then someone took off the blind and the window became, for those who stop to ponder, something akin to an Alice in Wonderland “Through the Looking Glass.” One can literally peer through what was formerly Room 9¾, and lo and behold, down a long corridor filled with

This lengthy corridor that now connects the two schools has been labelled “the link”* – which coincidentally happens to be the name of the School’s community magazine.

This connecting structure is truly a sign of both the nearing completion of the new Senior School and a metaphor for the many connections present in the dynamic of The Country Day School.

The new link reminds us of our connection to the past. Since the founding of CDS some 43 years ago, a spirit of building something great has been alive. Passionate individuals over the past four decades have built something of generational importance.

The new link reminds us of our connection to community at this school. People have not just added physical facilities and acres of land over time, they have, most importantly, been building upon the spirit within the walls that makes it so special. Indeed, these community connections are

singularly responsible for the remarkable success of our $10 million campaign, which was named Making Connections for this very reason!

Finally, this link reminds us of our connection to the future.

That connection comes through our students who, of course, go on to become CDS alumni. For many years to come, our young people will be afforded the opportunity to inhabit these spaces to learn, to grow, to lead and to follow, to converse, to be inspired and to create.

In the year 2016, we will move through the looking glass and walk (but not run!) down the link and into the new school. We will walk through this passageway and honour the foresight of our founders, the generosity of our donors, the care and passion of our faculty and staff, and most of all, honour the promise that is in our students. I cannot wait to take the door off Room 9¾ and lead you through.

Making Connections Update AS WE HOPED, the new CDS Dining Hall was open for business on the first day of school and generations of lunchmaking parents rejoiced! Now it is the students who are rejoicing as the quality and variety of the lunches they are eating each day is truly extraordinary.

Meanwhile, we are in the process of preparing for our move into the new Senior School which should be ready by Christmas. This will impact nine classrooms; administrative offices, including the Senior School and Admissions offices; the Middle/Senior School Library; and the Learning Resource Centre. Our plan is to make the move as smooth as possible and be up and ready for when students return in the New Year.

CDS Endowment Report AN ENDOWMENT IS a fund that holds investments in perpetuity as a source of income.

It provides an inspirational opportunity for our families to support an area of interest in the School forever. Families can support areas within the School by donating to an existing fund, many of which are named in honour of donors and former members of faculty and staff.

Endowment funds provide meaningful support for the School and its community by diversifying the student population; adding a humanizing touch by extending support to families who have had their circumstances change mid-way through the educational experience; and helping to fund programs that would otherwise be unaffordable such as hosting visiting experts in academic, artistic and athletic disciplines.

CDS currently has funds that support scholarships and bursaries, athletics, music, staff development and training, and beautification and green initiatives.

The Country Day School also has a number of general funds and an anonymous fund that provide support for the School’s areas of highest priority and the Scholarship/Bursary Program. Funds donated throughout the year toward a specific area of support and directed

to the School’s Endowment are added to an existing fund that supports the same area. New named funds are eligible to be established with a minimum gift of $25,000, though the funds can be pledged over many years.

Introducing the Courtney Cathers Endowment Fund In February 2013, The Country Day School’s Class of 2006 lost one of their own – Courtney Cathers – in a tragic car accident.

Courtney was a beloved friend, peer, colleague, daughter, sister, and partner-in-crime and a madly passionate thespian, public speaker, musician, and visual artist. She lit up the CDS stage and the minds of the audience with her gregarious laughter, mischievous imagination, relentless focus and riotous generosity and went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from York University.

To honour her memory, family members recently endowed a fund in her name – the Courtney Cathers Endowment Fund. This fund has enabled the creation of The Courtney T. Cathers Celebration of the Arts Award to be presented to a Grade 11 student returning to CDS for their graduating year.

Financial Reporting

THIS HAS BEEN a landmark year in the

history of The Country Day School.

On the tail of raising more than $9.5 million of our $10 million campaign target, we finally have the pleasure of seeing the reality of a Dining Hall and will open the new portion of our Senior School in the New Year. The Management Team and the Board have worked extremely hard to see this project to successful fruition, and although the bulk of the work is done, it will continue to require our diligent attention for some time.

The School completed the fiscal year ended June 30, 2015 with a small operating surplus, arising from increased enrolment and other operating revenue, representing 2% of tuition fee revenue.

The tuition fee is set annually to cover the estimated long-term annual operating costs of the School on a break-even basis. A realized surplus or deficit at the conclusion of a school year is allocated or financed in accordance with the direction of the Board, giving careful consideration to the ongoing operating requirements and the future growth and stability of the School.

Fund balances increased by $2.6 million to $32 million, comprised of $23.1 million in the Capital Fund, $6 million in the Endowment Fund, and $2.9 million in the Operating Fund. The generosity of the School community has been primarily responsible for the increase in our Capital and Endowment funds and for our ability to improve facilities and to build and sustain our bursary and scholarship programs. The Endowment Fund increased by $318,000 in 201415, and contributed $129,000 primarily to bursaries and scholarships, a tribute to the diligent management by the Foundation Committee.

The Board, and in particular the Finance Committee, has been careful in considering and deliberating the financing of projects, ongoing operating requirements, and the long-term financial stability of the School. The Building Committee has actively monitored all aspects of the construction process and has been diligent in examining costs associated with the building of the addition. This considerable effort, combined with the outstanding support from our major donors and the entire community, has allowed the School to complete this revolutionary project in a very strong financial position.

Approximately two-thirds of the project has been self-financed, and the remaining one-third will be financed at favourable terms through a loan at a tier-one bank.

The Finance and Property Committee is a very active committee, particularly this year with the ongoing building through-

out the summer. Many of the members are instrumental in other roles on the Board, and it is a testament to their hard work that the project can be considered a success. I thank the 2015 committee members, Mr. Jeremy Burge, Mr. Kent Harris, Mr. Paul Jewer, Mr. Richard King, Ms. Jennifer Legge, and Mr. Paul Wolfe for their time, dedication and expertise throughout the year. These volunteers have valuable experience in financial and general business management, including short and long-term planning, legal, budgeting and financial accounting, and the School benefits from their knowledge and efforts. On behalf of the Committee, I also thank Mr. John Liggett, Ms. Melanie Sheppard and their teams for their preparedness and significant contributions.
