Laying the Foundation for the Future
Happy New Year! I am pleased to report that CDS continued to be on solid ground throughout the 2018-2019 academic year. From the implementation of year three of our Strategic Plan and its four pillars, to the school leadership headed by John Liggett, the record high student enrolment, the school’s innovative approach to risk management, strategy development and the health and safety of the entire community, CDS has never been stronger.
Community development is continuing with the recent improvements to our Junior School over the summer and the launch of our Building Magic Campaign in September, which will allow us to build a first class educational institution for our youngest students.
Thanks to the swift action taken by John Liggett and the collective efforts of his Leadership and Communications teams in September/October, we were able to avert the potential Metrolinx threat of expropriating our land for an industrial servicing facility and thereby preserve the country in The Country Day School.
Last spring, I had the privilege of attending a meeting of the CDS Alumni Executive. This capable group consisting of 10 of our graduates and fi ve Faculty Liaisons meets every few months to strategize on event and outreach ideas to help further re-engage our 1800 alumni. The work they are doing now lays the foundation for the future.
Alumni Relations is a key component to the success of an independent school. As we approach our 50th anniversary, this group, in conjunction with the Office of Community Relations, is doing its utmost to reinvigorate our alumni programming and instill CDS pride in all that we do.
In addition to the Alumni Executive, the intergenerational legacy of our alumni is everywhere we turn. It is present in our Faculty and Staff, which now boasts eight alumni. It is now evident throughout our parent community, and it is on our Board of Directors, which includes the very capable Mike Laceby ’98 and Katie Shotbolt ’07.
CDS continues to be fortunate to have such a talented group of volunteer Directors willing to lend their time and financial support to help our visionary projects become reality for our students. I would like to thank our departing Board members – Domenic Borrelli, Charlene Hayes and Jennifer Legge– for their years of service. I also welcome our new Board members: Luis Chacin, Nadia Chychrun, Basheer Khan and Tina Mithra.
Thank you to John Liggett and his staff for their ongoing dedication in supporting, knowing and inspiring your children. CDS is privileged to have an evolving infrastructure that helps us facilitate a culture that enables us to inspire your students. However, all of our wide open spaces, our bricks and our mortar will not and cannot duplicate the professionalism, caring and dedication of our faculty. Their individual knowledge and support of our students truly make the difference in the education and inspiration your children receive.

Message from the President of the Parent Association
What Does the CDS Community Mean to Us as Parents?
Remarks made at New Parent Evening last May
The Country Day School strives to achieve Education wi th B alance; a finely tuned program that is tailored to meet individual needs and cultivate passion. I have had the privilege of experiencing this firsthand through my three children. My daughter Layla started in Grade 3 and is now graduating from Grade 6. My younger daughter Ava started in Grade 2 and is now finishing Grade 5. And my son Tyler started in Junior Kindergarten and is now finishing Grade 2.
Just as every child is unique, so too is their experience. And every new experience brings with it an opportunity for challenges, learning, and growth – all of which are necessary for our children to succeed. With the help and support they will get at CDS, your children will be exposed to the knowledge and the learning experiences that will build them up, strengthen their character and lead them to succeed.
So what does the CDS community mean to us as parents? We can make it anything we want it to be. One thing I can say about my personal experience is that until joining this community, I had never felt a genuine sense of community anywhere else. From my first experience at the annual Auction, to becoming involved in the Auction Committee, as a Grade Parent, attending parent socials and coffee mornings, and most recently getting involved with the Parent Association and now serving as incoming President, I have felt this sense of community. Every step of the way, every touch point I have had with other parents, the staff and faculty, the administration and leadership all help to reaffirm that this school was one of the best things that has happened to my kids, to my family, and to me.
I would like to thank David Huckvale, the Director of Admission and first person we met during our tour, Mr. John Liggett, our Head of School, and Brent Johnston and Tracey Scott in the Community Relations Offi ce, and of course Mrs. Wildberger, Mr. Waldron and Mrs. Bland, the Directors of of the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools respectively.
Where do the parents fi t into all of this? Early on, I recall being told by a parent at the School that she had met some of her best friends here at CDS. I found that a bit hard to believe, I mean this was just supposed to be the place where my children came to learn. But now here I stand in this short time surrounded by some of my best friends. Thank you to the Parent Association for continuing the tradition of fostering this amazing parent community!
As a final thought, we all know that being a parent is one of the hardest jobs out there, but this school and this community make it easy. They not only teach our children the curriculum, they teach them manners, they teach them ethics, they teach them about generosity and philanthropy, and how to be selfl ess. They teach them that they are a meaningful and important part of this community, this city, and this country, and that they can conquer anything they put their minds to.

As The Country Day School approaches its 50th year, we are at a record high for student enrolment and applications. We are able to hire and retain faculty of the highest quality, each one with the goal to support, know, and inspire our students, and offer an excellent teacher to student ratio. We continue to focus on strengthening our financial stability. This includes financial planning for building, renovating and maintaining our coveted campus and further developing our risk management practices to protect all of our resources.
In 2018-19 The Country Day School had a surplus from school operations of $908,000. Our results were better than anticipated for two reasons: an increase in tuition revenue and a decrease in amortization expense. First, enrolment increased once again and surpassed our target. Second, the school reviewed its amortization policies and extended the useful life of some of its assets, including the Middle School building. This surplus will be transferred to our Stability Reserve and the Board plans to use the surplus toward construction of the Building Magic project.
There were two unusual one-time items in 2018-19. First, the Dufferin Street traffic light, funded by the 2018 Auction, was completed and expensed. Second, there was a small gain on the expropriation of land required to double track the current railway. This land is less than one acre and doesn’t impact school programs.
The total excess of revenue over expenses, including fundraising and investment gains was $3.1 million. At the fiscal year end June 30, 2019, fund balances were comprised of $4.7 million in the Operating Fund, $30.2 million in the Capital Fund, and $7.4 million in the Endowment Fund, for a total fund balance of $42.3 million.
While tuition fees are the primary source of income for operations, charitable giving has a tremendous impact on the financial sustainability of the School. The generosity of our families and donors is evident from $841,000 received from the Annual Capital Fund, Auction and Parent Association. This annual commitment enables CDS to keep tuition as low as possible for our families. Your Building Magic Campaign donations will make the new build possible. The bank loan from the Senior School and Dining Hall building project is on track to be repaid before the opening of the new Junior School wing. Low debt and healthy cash reserves will ensure our strong financial position is sustained after the build.

An endowment is a fund that holds investments in perpetuity as a source of income. It provides an inspirational opportunity for our families to support an area of interest in the School forever. Families can support areas within the School by donating to an existing fund, many of which are named in honour of donors and former members of faculty and staff

Program. Funds donated throughout the year toward a specific area of support and directed to the School’s Endowment are added to an existing fund that supports the same area. New named funds are eligible to be established with a minimum gift of $25,000, though the funds can be pledged over many years.
