On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.
BOBBY BANDIERA & FRIENDS ANNOUNCE
Two River’s Latino outreach programs are geared toward making the experience of theater, and our work here in Red Bank, accessible to all audiences. We give to those who don’t always see themselves reflected in mainstream popular culture, a mirror in which to see themselves on stage. We are grateful to be a beneficiary of the annual HOPE 9, which will help Two River continue our work of producing plays by Latino writers; hosting free public events, including activities for families; and making available free tickets to mainstage performances through our community outreach partnerships.”
THE GREAT WAR & ARMISTICE DAY
make a difference in our community,” said longtime HOPE concert organizer Bobby Bandiera. “This year, I couldn’t be more pleased that we’ll be helping the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties and the Latino programming and outreach efforts at the Two River Theater.”
“The FoodBank’s mission is to ensure that Hunger Won’t Win Here,” said Carlos Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Foodbank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. “Proceeds from HOPE 9 will go directly toward food and programs that feed the hungry in this community. The FoodBank has 300 feeding programs in Monmouth and Ocean Counties and approximately 70 of them are within 10 miles of Red Bank. Our partners include pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and group homes, and our goal is always to ensure that all families have access to enough nutritious food for an active and healthy life.”
Past HOPE concert performers have included Jon Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Deborah Harry of Blondie, Southside Johnny, Nicole Atkins, Gary U.S. Bonds, John Cafferty, Richie “La Bamba” Rosenberg, Brian Fallon and the late Ben E. King. As is tradition, Holiday Express founder Tim McLoone and his band, The Shirleys, will open the show with a set of holiday favorites.
Though the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, November 11 remained in the public imagination as the date that marked the end of the Great War. In November 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. The day’s observation included parades and public gatherings, as well as a brief pause in business activities at 11 continued on pg 14 a.m.

The United States Armed Forces are the federal armed forces of the United States. They consist of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard. The President of the United States is the military’s overall head, and helps form military policy with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), a federal executive department, acting as the principal organ by which military policy is carried out. From the time of its inception, the military played a decisive role in the history of the United States. A sense of national unity and identity was forged as a result of victory in the First Barbary War and the Second Barbary War. Even so, the Founders were suspicious of a permanent military force. It played an important role in the American Civil War, where leading generals on both sides were picked from members of the United States military. Not until the outbreak of World War II did a large standing army become officially established. The National Security Act of 1947, adopted following World War II and during the Cold War’s onset, created the modern U.S. military framework; the Act merged previously Cabinet-level Department of War and the Department of the Navy into the National Military Establishment (renamed the
Department of Defense in 1949), headed by the Secretary of Defense; and created the Department of the Air Force and National Security Council. The U.S. military is one of the largest militaries in terms of number of personnel. It draws its personnel from a large pool of paid volunteers; although conscription has been used in the past in various times of both war and peace, it has not been used since 1972. As of 2016, the United States spends about $580.3 billion annually to fund its military forces and Overseas Contingency Operations.[4] Put together, the United States constitutes roughly 40 percent of the world’s military expenditures. For the period 2010–14, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) found that the United States was the world’s largest exporter of major arms, accounting for 31 per cent of global shares. The United States was also the world’s eighth largest importer of major weapons for the same period. The U.S. military has significant capabilities in both defense and power projection due to its large budget, resulting in advanced and powerful equipment, and its widespread deployment of force around the world, including about 800 military bases in foreign locations.
