Ocean Community Church Receives Causeway’s “CauseWheels” Vehicle Donation Program With the celebration of The Causeway Family of Dealerships 50th anniversary concluded, we continue with a new yearlong campaign – “CauseWheels” Vehicle Donation Program - to help our neighbors and positively impact Ocean County.

At the end of 2019, Causeway had two requests for vehicle donations to local non-profit organizations. We were able to accommodate each of these requests. This prompted an idea to follow up last year’s 50th Anniversary Grant program.

Anchoring this campaign is the CauseWheels vehicle donation program, through which Causeway will award a used vehicle to one Ocean County nonprofit every month, from February through December of 2020. Due to Covid-19 we had to postpone our April and May winners. To recap, our February winner was Main Street Alliance Church and our March winner was 21 Plus, Inc.!

Ocean Community Church is lead by The Rev. Dr. Philip Bakelaar. Phillip is a graduate of Columbia Graduate School of Bible and Missions in Columbia, SC. He has served churches as a pastor since 1985, originally preparing for overseas mission service.

Pastor Phil is sometimes known as “Pastor Gadget” or “Tech Pastor” because of his interest in and use of technology in teaching and preaching. Since 1992 he has been an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, teaching courses in Communication Studies.

We asked Pastor Phillip how the pantry got its start and how they plan to utilize the van.

Phillip stated: “Over 20 years ago a deacon at Ocean Community Church asked the church board

The story behind this Ford Transit Connect Van Once again, our friends over at Meals on Wheels of Ocean County sold us this van that was in their fleet! They told us that if we can find a Non-Profit that can use this van, they would let us buy it for a discount! Thanks again Meals on Wheels of Ocean County! for permission to start some kind of food pantry for needy families in the community. A closet under the stairway was offered, and with a bag of groceries and two people, the OCC Food Pantry was launched. 20 years later there are four freezers, four refrigerators, a volunteer team of 30 plus people gathering each Wednesday, serving an average of 90 families a week with meat, produce, dairy and bread products, along with a special table for pet food, and other tables with clothing, shoes and household items. The OCC Food Pantry participates in the FULFILL food bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, and is supported through gifts and community grants, with special thanks to the Southern Ocean Hunger Foundation and their yearly fundraising dinner as well as the Post Office food drives and local Scout food drives. Our donated 1995 minivan has been struggling to keep up with our weekly pickup of food donations from Wawa, ShopRite and Acme.

Sometimes we gather thousands of pounds to distribute. The donation of this 2010 Ford Connect Transit van will help us to continue those pickups for years to come, and enable us to look at new ways to provide service to our community.

Ocean Community Church has served on the corner of

Breakers and Rt. 72 since 1982 as a gathering devoted to “being the very presence of Christ,” seeking to provide a generous orthodoxy in the Protestant mainline tradition.

During Hurricane Sandy, the church hosted volunteer teams of workers for three years through World Renew. The church also has connections with Family Promise, Interfaith Health and Support Services, Compass82 Disaster Services and the Hearts of Mercy project. The pastor continues that community response by participation in the Ocean County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (OCARES) which provides ham radio services in crisis events.

Since the COVID pandemic began in March, they have maintained daily online evening zoom prayer meetings and livestream services on Sundays at 9am and 11am through Facebook, YouTube and their website at oceanchurch.net.

The church expresses appreciation to Causeway Ford’s Vehicle Donation Program for this vehicle, and invites the community to take advantage of the resources that the church has available. Many families are finding themselves in difficult times and by using our food pantry they are able to stretch dollars to pay rent, utility and medical bills. Come join us as we follow Christ in mission”.

A CALL FOR ORGAN DONORS FROM NJ’S DIVERSE COLLECTION OF COMMUNITIES

NJ Sharing Network has kicked off its 2020 #DonationNeedsDiversity initiative — honoring the generosity of donors from multiple cultures, and underscoring the need for people from diverse communities to register for donation.

"I think as a community we come together, we register, we're there for one another. You know, love your neighbor as yourself," D'Addio said.

According to the NJ Sharing Network, 66% of those currently waiting for life-saving transplants in the state are people of color. Almost 35% of the nearly 115,000 people on the national waiting list for kidney transplants are Black. Black people, people of Asian decent, Pacific Islanders and Hispanic people are

Directions: Step 1

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Spray cupcake cups with cooking spray, or line with cupcake liners.

Step 2

Place 8 strawberries into a blender, and blend until smooth.

Pour the puree through a strainer to remove seeds. Puree should equal about 3/4 cup. Set the puree aside.

Step 3

In a large bowl, beat together the eggs, white sugar, vegetable oil, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, lemon zest, and strawberry puree until well combined. Stir in the flour, baking powder, salt, vanilla pudding mix (for a moister cupcake), and red food coloring to reach a desired shade of pink. Spoon the batter into the prepared cupcake cups, filling each about 2/3 full.

Director of Hospital and Community Services Alyssa D'Addio, said in a world of uncertainty, beauty is always shown in organ donation. People can be in the worst hour of losing a loved one, but will say yes to saving someone else's life at the same time, she said.

In August, named National Minority Donor Awareness Month, the network is hoping to spread the word that the more people who register, the better chance there is for the more than 5,000 people currently on the donor wait list in New Jersey to receive life-saving transplants.

D'Addio added that people in New Jersey seem to be very generous, no matter their race or their background.

D'Addio said while organs are not matched according to race and ethnicity, all individuals waiting for an organ or a tissue transplant have a better chance of receiving one if there are large numbers of donors from multiple communities.

"We're a generous state. We want to help one another. We want to be there for one another. So if more of us can register and have these conversations with our families before we're in a time of grief and shock, that would be the best case scenario," D'Addio said.

She said the good thing is there is a lot of generosity in New Jersey.

About 65% of the time, families who lose a loved one say "yes" at the bedside to organ and tissue donation.

AMERICAN RED CROSS NEEDS PLACES TO HOST BLOOD DRIVES IN NJ

The American Red Cross is looking for blood drive hosts this fall to help keep blood supplies at healthy levels.

Blood drives have been canceled at alarming rates due to COVID-19 and because nobody knows when the pandemic will end, the need for blood is greater than ever.

"About 80% of blood donations are made at blood drives", said Alana Mauger, a spokeswoman for The American Red Cross Blood Services.

Ingredients:

Gov. Phil Murphy has deemed blood donations as an essential service, so blood drives are allowed to take place in New Jersey. The challenge is finding places to host them.

Typically, schools, businesses, churches and other community organizations host local blood drives.

But many have been closed during the pandemic and even if places like schools open in the fall, they won't be hosting blood drives, said Mauger.

The Red Cross said it's going to need blood drive hosts going forward for quite some time.

She said donors have been very generous during the pandemic. For some, it's a reason to get out of the house. For others, it's mainly because they want to save lives.

Mauger said safety procedures are in place at Red Cross blood drives.

Blood donations are by appointment only: No walk-ins will be accepted. That's because they have to limit the number of people inside a building at any given time.

A donor's temperature will be taken before he or she even walks in the door. Mauger said if the donor has a fever of 99.5 or higher, that person will not be allowed in.

Donors will be provided with hand sanitizer throughout the blood donation process. Donors must wear masks and so must all staff. She also pointed

out that the staff will be disinfecting and sanitizing all the public spaces in between each blood donor.

As an incentive during the month of August, all blood donors will be given a $5 electronic card from Amazon. Donors will automatically be entered for a chance to win a trip for four to Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, or Knott's Berry Farm theme park in California, redeemable for the 2021 season.

AFTER MONTHS AT HOME, HOW WILL PETS COPE WHEN WE GO BACK TO WORK? We all love spending time with our pets, but many have been at our sides almost constantly for close to five months, as New Jerseyans working from home and limiting their outside trips during the COVID-19 pandemic have few places to go.

But when workers start to be able to return to their physical offices, furry friends may feel left behind, even if being alone in the house all day was the reality for their entire lives prior to mid-March.

Separation anxiety is real and tangible for pets, according to Dr. Adam Christman, chief veterinary officer of Fetch DVM360 and treasurer of the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association.

Christman said vet visits have actually increased during the pandemic, as owners have noticed more things wrong with their pets the more time they’ve spent together. But the flip side of that is that some pets are now getting more exercise than they ever did before.

“If that deteriorates, that’s how they can either get into trouble, or just have incredible anxiety to the point where they may not eat,” Christman said, suggesting that owners consider hiring a pet-sitter or walker when they go back to work, to maintain that new standard of physical activity.

Other options include “doggy daycare” — the anxiety is more pronounced

in dogs than cats, Christman said — or even medication, with the approval of your veterinarian.

Christman further suggests owners find excuses to get out of the house for increasingly longer periods, so that pets can acclimate to isolation gradually, rather than all at once.

“You’re trying to desensitize them as they get used to whatever the new normal schedule will be,” he said.

And once you do return to the office? Major signs of pet anxiety to watch out for, aside from not eating, include trying to chew on furniture or escape from a crate ... or worse.

“The big thing is selfdestruction, so if they’re self-mutilating, whether they’re actually licking themselves, they could be licking their arms, licking their knees,” Christman said, “they’re basically having a temper tantrum and saying, listen, this isn’t cool. I don’t like the fact that you’re gone, and I need you now.”

The good news, according to Christman, is that things as simple as leaving the radio on during the day, playing special music or TV programming, or investing in smart toys controlled by phone apps can help your companion cope.

NEW BILL: NO LICENSE NEEDED AFTER PASSING ROAD TEST DURING COVID New drivers who pass the road test could use their examination or learner’s permit as a temporary license until two months after the Motor Vehicle Commission clears its driver’s license backlog, under legislation advanced Monday, August 10, by a Senate committee.

In all, the Senate Transportation Committee endorsed four bills stemming from the coronavirus pandemic, which closed MVC agencies for nearly four months and then left them swamped attempting to keep up with pent-up demand for documents and services.

The others would: • Extend expiring drivers’ licenses and identification cards for senior citizens until Jan. 2, 2022 and limit appointment on some days at MVC locations to people with certain medical conditions.

• Establish a “virtual check-in pilot program” in which people can reserve a spot in the queue on the MVC’s website without having to be physically at the agency, then check in from the parking lot.

• Temporarily extend the deadline to register vehicle and obtain driver’s license for new residents.

The road-test bill is sponsored by Sen. Vin Gopal, D-Monmouth.

“I have a lot of young constituents who reached out to us because they’d be able to get jobs to support their families, especially when there are transportation challenges, employment challenges,” Gopal said.

“And obviously this impacts some of the more urban areas of the state, so I think it’s a no-brainer.”

“We’re talking about a 60-day temporary license,” he said. “And I think government, we have a responsibility to try to make it easier for the people, not harder.”

When MVC agencies reopened in early July, among those who overwhelmed its capacity were teens who’d earned driving privileges during the pandemic but couldn’t get their licenses.

That backlog has eased a bit but hasn’t ended.

The state said last week that roughly 55% of the backlog had been cleared, more than 483,000 total transactions. Gopal said that despite that progress, the bill is still needed.

“Absolutely,” Gopal said. “You never know when this can come up in the future.”

Remember Tom Hanks and his canine buddy Hootch? Well, we have a small male named Kimba who is a 1 year old and strongly resembles a Dogue de Bordeaux.

He was surrendered to the shelter along with another dog.

Kimba is shy and will take time to warm up to a new home and family. He is neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on his shots. He will do best in a home where he is treasured as the only pet and is given lots of exposure and buddy experiences.

Kittens don’t get much cuter than Clementine. She is a 9 1/2 week old Long Haired Calico female who was raised in one of our loving foster homes. She is sweet and sassy. She loves to pounce on her siblings and play with toys. Clementine would love to go home with one of her siblings, who are also up for adoption or to a new home with another cat or kitten to play with.

NISSAN MOST-AWARDED MASS MARKET BRAND IN 2020 J.D. POWER APEAL STUDY

A new chapter is unfolding at Nissan evidenced by four of its vehicles earning top segment honors in the J.D. Power 2020 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM, released today.

Nissan’s four segment wins were the most of any mass market brand in the 2020 APEAL study.

The all-new 2020 Sentra turned in the best performance for Nissan, scoring 42 points above its segment average (compact car). The all-new Versa scored 41 points ahead of segment average (small car); Maxima was 30 points ahead of segment average (large car); and Armada ranked 25 points ahead of its segment average (large SUV). This is the third APEAL segment win in a row for the Nissan Maxima.

“Delighting our customers takes a combined effort in partnership with our dealers,” said Mike Colleran, senior vice president, U.S. Marketing and Sales, Nissan North America. “We’re quickly revamping our portfolio with vehicles that thrill in both design and performance, and our dealer partners are experts at matching them to customer needs, which equates to these great customer satisfaction results.”

Among mass market brands Nissan improved its ranking, climbing from 14th place in 2019 to a tie for sixth in 2020.

Now in its 25th year, the JD Power APEAL Study measures owners’ emotional attachment and level of excitement with their new vehicle across 37 attributes,

ranging from the sense of comfort and luxury they feel when climbing into the driver’s seat to the feeling they get when they step on the accelerator. These attributes are aggregated to compute an overall APEAL index score measured on a 1,000-point scale.

Customer receives new truck, Million-Mile Frontier returns ‘home’ After more than a million miles of hard work, Brian Murphy’s 2007 Nissan Frontier is headed home.

Today, Murphy swapped his “MillionMile” Frontier for a new 2020 Frontier at M’Lady Nissan in Crystal Lake, the same dealership where he bought his 2007 Frontier more than 13 years ago. The Million Mile Frontier will retire where it was assembled, the Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Tennessee.

Nissan first celebrated Murphy and his million miler during the reveal of the 2020 Frontier at the Chicago Auto Show in February. During a short ceremony on

Tuesday, Nissan presented Murphy with a new 2020 Frontier, which is now available at select Nissan dealers nationwide with a starting MSRP of $26,790.

“Brian Murphy is the quintessential Frontier owner, so it’s fitting that he will be driving one of the first 2020 Frontier pickups in America,” said Craig Keeys, regional vice president, Nissan Midwest Region, Nissan North America. “Thank you, Brian, for illustrating the durability and reliability of the Frontier for more than 13 years and one million miles.”

The 2020 Nissan Frontier features an

That will be a significant upgrade for all Frontier owners, and especially for Murphy, whose 2007 Frontier still has its original 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission.

According to Murphy – an independent delivery driver who regularly spends 13 hours a day on the road – the original clutch on his Frontier King Cab lasted 801,000 miles, the timing chain was replaced as preventative at 700,000 miles, and the

radiator and alternator lasted about 450,000 miles each. Even the driver’s seat lasted a half-million miles before being replaced.

And though it still “runs great,” said Murphy, he’s ready for his new 2020 Frontier SV King Cab 4x4.

“I’ll miss this truck, no doubt, but I’m glad it’s going back ‘home’ to Smyrna,” said Murphy. “At the same time, I’m ready for my next chapter, and I can’t wait to experience my new Frontier and its all-new powertrain.

LINCOLN NAVIGATOR EARNS TOP LARGE PREMIUM SUV APEAL AWARD FOR THIRD YEAR IN A ROW The Lincoln Navigator continues to turn heads and impress consumers, earning the top award in the Large Premium SUV segment for the third consecutive year in the 2020 J.D. Power U.S. APEAL study.

BIG NJ UTILITIES WON’T REIMBURSE FOR SPOILED FOOD New Jersey’s largest power companies won’t reimburse customers for spoiled food even if they lost power for days after last week’s Tropical Storm Isaias. But another regional utility company is doing just that.

Some JCP&L customers were still struggling without power after last Tuesday’s storm as of Monday, and may not have it back until Tuesday of this week, the company has said. A smaller sliver of PSE&G’s customers still had no power Monday. In all, about 1.3 million customers of the state’s various utilities lost power for at least some period.

JCP&L president Jim Fakult, during a press conference on Friday, Aug. 7 in Middletown said it is not the utility’s policy to reimburse customers for food loss, after Ocean County Freeholders said they plan to ask Gov. Phil Murphy to seek reimbursement from the utilities.

“Unfortunately, we do not reimburse for food lost or expenses incurred during a weather-related power outage. We suggest inquiring with your insurance company to determine if your policy covers such losses,” Fakult said in a statement.

“PSE&G does not reimburse for food spoilage related to acts of nature. There are certain extenuating circumstances where a customer could make a claim,” spokeswoman Lauren Ugorji told New Jersey 101.5.

Ugorji said during restoration the utility offered customers free ice and water to help prevent food spoilage.

Atlantic City Electric spokesman Frank Tedesco told NJ.com that it does not offer reimbursement unless it is determined that the utility could have prevented an outage.

But a spokesman told New Jersey 101.5 the company still encourages customers to file claims, which will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

“These are very difficult times with the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people have stocked up on food because they can’t leave their houses.

The food prices have escalated substantially. The food they had in their freezer and their refrigerator was spoiled so they had to dispose of it,” Vicari said.

Federal officials recommend after four hours without power, throw out refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs and leftovers.

He said the county has a large senior population of people who live on fixed incomes, and “hard-working people” in Ocean County that can’t afford to re-stock.

“The utilities made a tremendous amount of money last year in profits,” Vicari said. “What we’re saying is we’re not begrudging them for making a profit and taking care of their shareholders. But now it’s time to say, ‘You know something, we have a lot of people who cannot feed themselves. We have a lot of people with a hardship right now.’

We’re asking them to change their policy in this particular situation and say people come first before profits.”

As for frozen items, food may be safely refrozen if it still contains ice crystals or is at 40°F or below — however, its quality may suffer.

Never taste food to determine its safety and “when in doubt, throw it out,” according to USDA officials.

Con Edison, the parent company of Orange & Rockland, which serves Bergen, Passaic and Sussex counties, said it would reimburse customers for food and prescription medicine spoilage if they lost power for 48 consecutive hours or longer.

“Being without power, even during normal times, is a real hardship. It’s even more difficult now because of COVID-19,” O&R Vice President Customer Service Christina Ho said in a statement.

The freeholders will go before the rest of the board on Wednesday at their next meeting and then talk to the utility companies.

Residential customers may receive reimbursements for up to $235 with an itemized list, or up to $540 with an itemized list and proof of loss, such as receipts or photos.

Option For All-Remote Learning Won’t Affect Stafford School Plans Following Governor Phil Murphy’s announcement that school districts can begin the year fully remote, the Stafford Township and Southern Regional School Districts will stick with their plans.

At least two dozen school districts — mostly in North and Central Jersey — opted to begin this school year with completely virtual learning. Murphy’s announcement Wednesday added another wrinkle for school districts developing plans under changing circumstances and guidelines.

But Stafford officials will move forward with their initial plan, Superintendent George J. Chidiac told Patch.
