Nicholas Carerra and Sebastian Sares, both 7th grade students at St. Mary Academy placed 3rd in the MidAtlantic Region Cyber Robotics Coding Competition Finals. Their team, Dub Catchers, was among forty-two teams hailing from New Jersey, Connecticut, and Delaware and competed in the day long competition at NJIT.

The Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs at Hackensack Meridian Health southern region hospitals were recognized by the New Jersey Department of Health for their dedication to antimicrobial stewardship at the New Jersey Antimicrobial Stewardship Collaborative Annual Conference Thursday, December 5. The 2019 Gold Steward, the highest level an organization can achieve, was awarded to Ocean Medical Center and Southern Ocean Medical Center.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center was awarded Bronze Steward status. Less than 25 N.J. hospitals achieved recognition.

“Nick and Sebastian are not only highly motivated coders, but they are disciplined students as well,” said Lizanne Coyne, St. Mary Academy Principal. “When they work with other students in our school, they help them all become better coders,” Coyne added.

St. Mary Academy had another team qualify for the finals. 7th graders Nicole and Adrianna Schirripa finished in 17th, placing them in the top 50%. During the closing ceremony, Carerra, Sares, the Schirripa’s and their sister Julia were also recognized as five of only twenty of the Mid-Atlantic Finalist to have completed all 103 missions available, putting them in the competitions “100 Club”.

“During the past two months, thirty-

nine St. Mary Academy students in grades 6-8 have been competing in the MidAtlantic Regions CoderZ competition that had 1,100 students participating in all,” explained Mr. Dennis Quinn, Computer Technology Teacher. “We are very proud of our students for their perseverance throughout the competition,” added Quinn.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment and showed their commitment and

The Antimicrobial Stewardship Recognition Program acknowledges health care facilities and physician practices that demonstrate, through written documentation, they have met or exceeded minimum expectations for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Core Elements of Antimicrobial Stewardship.

The N.J. Antimicrobial Stewardship Recognition Awards, launched this year, is a voluntary, incentive program that encourages health care facilities to assess how well they are applying the CDC’s core elements, a set of key principles to guide efforts to improve antibiotic use, advance patient safety and improve outcomes.

Based on the level of difficulty of stewardship programs’ interventions, hospitals are awarded either the Gold, Silver or Bronze Antimicrobial Stewardship status.

Another great tournament is in the books. The Manasquan boys defeated Toms River North, 78-63, to win the WOBM Christmas Classic for the second time in the last three years! As for the Manchester girls, they maintained their Christmas Classic title for a third consecutive year, defeating Red Bank 70-59.

Since the beginning 36 years ago, Causeway has been a sponsor for the WOBM Christmas Classic. In addition to the T-shirts for the players and coaches and the Boys MVP Trophy, we provided the

ALTIMA’S VC-TURBO ENGINE NAMED TO ‘WARDS 10 BEST’ LIST Delivering the power of a V6 and the fuel efficiency of a four-cylinder, Nissan Altima’s 2.0-liter VC-Turbo™ engine is named to “Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems” list for 2020. The team behind the innovative powertrain will be recognized at a private industry event in Detroit on January 16, 2020.

Nissan’s turbocharged four-cylinder variable-compression engine leverages an industry-first production technology to achieve its goals of offering high levels of power and efficiency from the same powerplant.

Monitoring driver inputs several times per second, the engine adjusts the compression ratio from 8:1 to 14:1 as needed, optimizing power and efficiency.

The range in capability is derived using a multi-link system that adjusts the length of the piston’s stroke, while adjusting the engine’s compression ratio on the fly. When the driver demands power, an internal actuator reduces the throw of the connecting rods allowing compression to drop, while

tapping the turbocharger for maximum output.

Conversely, during highway cruising and other low-power needs, the engine automatically adjusts to a higher compression ratio, offering a significantly higher level of efficiency.

Phil Murphy vetoed a measure that would have imposed a statewide 5-cent fee on carryout bags, a proposal that was opposed by environmental groups because fees have not done enough to discourage people from using plastic bags in other parts of the country. Environmentalists say the plastic bags and straws are hazards for animals and marine life.

New Jersey uses 4.4 billion plastic bags a year, according to the NJ League of Conservation Voters.

Scientists have found plastic fragments in hundreds of species, including 86% of all sea turtle species, 44% of all seabird species and 43% of all marine mammal species, according to Environment New Jersey.

Business groups also opposed the measure, as well as the Legislature’s newest proposal, but for different reasons.

Douglas Kellogg, state projects director at Americans for Tax Reform, called efforts against plastic drinking straws a “moral panic.” Others say it will impose financial hardships on small businesses and consumers.

Many of the local ordinances have exemptions from the ban, which is aimed at the bags people would use at the check-out counter, not the bags used in the produce aisle or the plastic containers used to package meats. Garbage bags also are exempt.

Jersey Shore towns that have adopted these measures also exempt bait shops from

the ban.

Fines are aimed at merchants not consumers, who still are allowed to use plastic bags at home or bring them to stores in order to reuse them for shopping.

A few communities that have imposed fees or bans on plastic bags have exempted consumers who are on welfare.

Here are locations in New Jersey that have adopted antibag or anti-plastic measures: Atlantic County, Asbury Park, Avalon, Bayonne, Beach Haven, Belmar, Bradley Beach, Brigantine, Camden County, Chatham Borough, Chatham Township, Cranford, Garfield, Glen Rock, Harvey Cedars, Highland Park, Hoboken, Hopewell Borough, Jersey City, Lambertville, Little Silver, Long Beach, Longport, Madison, Maplewood, Monmouth Beach, Ocean Gate, Paramus, Parsippany-Troy Hills, Point Pleasant Beach, Ridgewood, Saddle Brook, Somers Point, South Orange, Stafford, Stone Harbor, Teaneck, Ventnor City.

Winners are evaluated based on several factors including horsepower, torque, noise, fuel economy, comparative specifications and applications of new technology. This year, the judges began testing from a group of 26 all-new or vastly improved engines, by putting them through the paces of daily life – commuting, road trips and running errands. To be eligible, a vehicle’s base price may not exceed $65,000.

By Patch.com MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Ram pride worked its way to the NFL gridiron. When the Dolphins faced the Bengals on Dec. 22, both rosters had a Southern Regional alumnus.

Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki met up with the Bengals’ Clark Harris after the game — a 38-35 overtime Dolphins victory. Southern alumnus Eric Espada took their photo.

Gesicki, who just completed his second season, emerged for the Dolphins this year.

He caught 89 passes for 570 yards and five touchdowns, including the game-winner Dec. 29 against the Patriots.

Harris played for the Texans for a year and has competed with the Bengals since 2009. He made the Pro Bowl in 2017.

Gesicki graduated from Southern Regional in 2014, and Harris graduated in 2002.
