A Brief History of the Heisman Nearly a century ago, college football established that it was here to stay. As fanfare increased around the sport and its popularity spread, the Downtown Athletic Club (DAC), renowned for its devotion to sports, decided that it was time to annually honor outstanding college football players. Members of the DAC appointed a Club Trophy Committee charged with conducting the presentation of the first award at the conclusion of the 1935 football season in the Club’s headquarters, located at the southern end of Manhattan. The first award—initially named the DAC Trophy—was presented on December 9 to Jay Berwanger, a triple threat cyclone and legendary “oneman-gang” in the University of Chicago’s backfield. In creating this Trophy, the DAC recognized the promise and enormous legacy of college football, and had the foresight to institute one of the first and now most soughtafter awards in American sports.

For his inventiveness and contribution to football strategy, the trophy was renamed in 1936 following the death of legendary player and coach, John W. Heisman.

Heisman played and coached football at the University of

Pennsylvania. He was the inventor of the forward pass that literally was a game changer. In the many decades since it was created, the Heisman Memorial Trophy has become more than an award: its bestowal is a defining moment in the career of a college football player when he is invited to join the ranks of the elite fraternity of Heisman Trophy winners.

Recognizing the role a school plays in a player’s success, the Heisman Trophy Committee, in 1968, voted to award two trophies each year—one presented to the college football player and the second awarded to the school represented by the winner. To this day, the Trophy remains a national symbol of collegiate football experience, prowess, and competitiveness. This year, for the 79th time since its inception, the Heisman Memorial Trophy will be awarded to an athlete designated as the Outstanding College Football Player in the United States.

The Design of the Heisman Trophy Before the now-famous stiff-arm design, the Club Trophy Committee concurred that the traditional cup or bowl seemed too commonplace, lacking in distinction, and in no way emblematic of the athletic talent that was to be honored and immortalized. It was decided that the trophy would be the bronze embodiment of a muscular footballer driving for yardage.

To create this trophy, the DAC commissioned Frank Eliscu, a well-known sculptor and National Academy of Design Prize Winner. He immediately began to work, selecting Ed Smith, a leading player on the 1934 New York University football team, as his primary model. Eliscu prepared a rough clay study that was sanctioned by the DAC Committee, and sent uptown for approval by the head football coach at Fordham University, Jim Crowley, one of the legendary Four Horsemen of Notre Dame. The prototype was set up on a field, and Crowley’s players were asked to assume various positions to illustrate and verify the side step, the forward drive, and a strongright arm thrust. The artist closely observed these action sequences and modified his clay prototype. The result was a truly lifelike simulation of a player in action. It was

then duplicated in plaster—a preliminary step towards its ultimate production in bronze.

The final inspection of the cast was made after a dinner at the McAlpin Hotel on November 16, 1935, attended by Coach Elmer Layden and the entire Notre Dame football team, who had just played in a memorable 6-6 tie game with Army before 78,114 fans. Layden, another member of the Four Horsemen, and the Fighting Irish squad, was impressed by the inspired and animated realism of Eliscu’s model—which was especially noted by Wally Fromhart, Don Elser, and Wayne Millner. That evening, the 1935 Notre Dame team put its seal of approval on the new trophy.

Made from an ancient method known as the lost wax process of bronze casting, the completed sculpture weighs 45 pounds, is 14 inches long, 13½ inches in height, and 6½ inches in width. The final incarnation of the Trophy faithfully depicts a skilled and powerful football player, sidestepping and straight-arming his way to a touchdown.

Our Gang Player’s

Alumni Reunion show!

Our favorite Ocean County local community theater group is asking for you to help! There is a fundraiser show coming up and you need to do is buy a ticket to help. Saturday, Nov. 28th at 7pm in the Bengal Theater at Barnegat High School.

By Jennifer Baker This show is like a Our Gang Member for 19 years variety show of past Our Gang Player’s alumni. All of these talented people were in the group when they were kids and teenagers. Some have been out of the group for over 15 years like Michael Keeler and Mark Fisher. Some alumni have been out for ten years like Justin Bohr and some about five years like Kara Feraldi.

There will be a lot of faces that we remember from past Our Gang shows like Bob Smith, Jessica Austin and Heather Rudolph-King.

Joe Feraldi who is an alumnus from the acting part of Our Gang has agreed to be our musical director. Joe is an assistant pastor at Bayside Chapel in Barnegat. Joe over the years has been a big O.G.P. supporter and has helped out by being the musical director for recent shows over the years. But the last show Joe performed in was “Guys and Dolls” back in 2005.

There will be an emcee, Kevin Bott. Kevin performed in Our Gang back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Kevin also had the experience to direct the teen division for a while. We are excited to have Kevin join us again for this fundraiser and be the emcee for the show.

Not only will there be great solos of singing, dancing, group readings and even bands playing, but we have chorus numbers that you may recognize. Do any of these sound familiar? “Comedy Tonight” from A funny Thing Happened

A lot of local O.G.P. alumni are excited to be back on stage like Jon and Carly Voinski. The talent that will be on the stage will be amazing! Everyone has come out of the wood work to help. Drew Stevens, Linda Reynolds and Jennifer Baker are the ones spear heading this show. Our Gang has wanted to do an Alumni show for a long time. This Thanksgiving weekend seemed to be the perfect time for it to happen. After we all eat with our families who wouldn’t want to enjoy a night out?

The Alumni Reunion Show is Saturday November 28th at 7pm. All we ask is that you buy a ticket. The money goes directly to Our Gang Player’s from the Alumni Association.

Here at The Causeway Family of Dealerships we are always looking for ways to give back to the community. Ford and Lincoln have come up with an ingenious way to get the Dealers, manufacturers, and public all involved together! This is Driven to Give and Drive One For UR School. Causeway along with The Southern Regional School District has been working together with the programs for a couple years now and has maxed out the donations the last couple times.

These programs work with “test drives”, for every test drive during the event Ford or Lincoln will donate $20 or $30 per test drive. The best part is these programs don’t cost anything for the school and almost nothing for the dealer.

The Driven To Give program is run by The Lincoln Motor Company and is used to give money to charities.

We have done these programs with a lot of our Local Hospitals, Churches, and Community Centers. The layout is the same as the Ford event, for every Lincoln test driven during the event Lincoln will donate $20 per drive. These events showcase just how amazing the current Lincoln product like is, we always say “You have to drive a Lincoln in order to understand” this philosophy resonates with corporate as well.

Congratulations to the Southern Regional football team on their victory over Lacey Twp on Saturday, October 31, 2015 by a score of 14-10. With the win, the Rams gave Head Coach Chuck Donohue Sr. his 100th career win with Southern Regional Football.

The win was Coach Donohue Sr.’s 239 overall career win. He is currently the only High School football coach to lead 4 different schools (St. JoeHammonton, Haddon Heights, Buena Regional & Southern Regional) to the NJSIAA South Jersey sectional finals in their respective groups winning Sectional titles in 1977 at St. Joseph-Hammonton (SJ Group B) & in 1988 with Buena Regional (SJ Group II). He has also been elected into both the South Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame and Shore Conference Football Coaches Hall of Fame. Good Luck the rest of the season. #RamPride

The Southern Regional Girl’s Middle School Volleyball “A” team finished undefeated in Ocean County Middle School League with a 14-0 record ( 28-2 set record). In only our 3rd season the girls program has become the leagues powerhouse as they also won the 7 team league last season ( at 11-1 match record) and currently boast a 23 consecutive match winning streak! The “B” team also went undefeated (14-0 match , 28-3 set record) for head coach Cathy Maxwell , along with assistant coaches Charlie Maxwell and Madeline Myers.

Great job by Southern Regional Varsity Field Hockey team on their NJSIAA SJ Group 4 Tournament game defeating Cherokee 2-0 in the quarterfinal round. The Rams will now host Washington Twp on Tuesday, November 3rd at 2pm on Field #13 in the semifinal round. #RamPride

history of thanksgiving In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth.

Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans.

In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations.

THANKSGIVING BECOMES AN OFFICIAL HOLIDAY Pilgrims held their second Thanksgiving celebration in 1623 to mark the end of a long drought that had threatened the year’s harvest and prompted Governor Bradford to call for a religious fast. Days of fasting and thanksgiving on an annual or occasional basis became common practice in other New England settlements as well. During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress designated one or more days of thanksgiving a year, and in 1789 George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the national government of the United States; in it, he called upon Americans to express their gratitude for the happy conclusion to the country’s war of independence and the successful ratification of the U.S. Constitution. His successors John Adams and James Madison also designated days of thanks during their presidencies.

In 1817, New York became the first of several states to officially adopt an annual Thanksgiving holiday; each celebrated it on a different day, however, and the American South remained largely unfamiliar with the tradition. In 1827, the noted magazine editor and prolific writer Sarah Josepha Hale—author, among countless other things, of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”—launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, she published numerous editorials and sent scores of letters to governors, senators, presidents and other politicians. Abraham Lincoln finally heeded her request in 1863, at the height of the Civil War, in a proclamation entreating all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation.” He scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November, and it was celebrated on that day every year until 1939, when Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in an attempt to spur retail sales during the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s plan, known derisively as Franksgiving, was met with passionate opposition, and in 1941 the president reluctantly signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November.

THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS In many American households, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost much of its original religious significance; instead, it now centers on cooking and sharing a bountiful meal with family and friends. Turkey, a Thanksgiving staple so ubiquitous it has become all but synonymous with the holiday, may or may not have been on offer when the Pilgrims hosted the inaugural feast in 1621. Today, however, nearly 90 percent of Americans eat the bird—whether roasted, baked or deep-fried—on Thanksgiving, according to the National Turkey Federation. Other traditional foods include stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Volunteering is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinners for the less fortunate.

Parades have also become an integral part of the holiday in cities and towns across the United States. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the largest and most famous, attracting some 2 to 3 million spectators along its 2.5-mile route and drawing an enormous television audience. It typically features marching bands, performers, elaborate floats conveying various celebrities and giant balloons shaped like cartoon characters.

Beginning in the mid-20th century and perhaps even earlier, the president of the United States has “pardoned” one or two Thanksgiving turkeys each year, sparing the birds from slaughter and sending them to a farm for retirement. A number of U.S. governors also perform the annual turkey pardoning ritual.

THANKSGIVING CONTROVERSIES For some scholars, the jury is still out on whether the feast at Plymouth really constituted the first Thanksgiving in the United States. Indeed, historians have recorded other ceremonies of thanks among European settlers in North America that predate the Pilgrims’ celebration. In 1565, for instance, the Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilé invited members of the local Timucua tribe to a dinner in St. Augustine, Florida, after holding a mass to thank God for his crew’s safe arrival. On December 4, 1619, when 38 British settlers reached a site known as Berkeley Hundred on the banks of Virginia’s James River, they read a proclamation designating the date as “a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God.” Some Native Americans and others take issue with how the Thanksgiving story is presented to the American public, and especially to schoolchildren. In their view, the traditional narrative paints a deceptively sunny portrait of relations between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people, masking the long and bloody history of conflict between Native Americans and European settlers that resulted in the deaths of millions. Since 1970, protesters have gathered on the day designated as Thanksgiving at the top of Cole’s Hill, which overlooks Plymouth Rock, to commemorate a “National Day of Mourning.” Similar events are held in other parts of the country.

THANKSGIVING’S ANCIENT ORIGINS Although the American concept of Thanksgiving developed in the colonies of New England, its roots can be traced back to the other side of the Atlantic. Both the Separatists who came over on the Mayflower and the Puritans who arrived soon after brought with them a tradition of providential holidays—days of fasting during difficult or pivotal moments and days of feasting and celebration to thank God in times of plenty.

As an annual celebration of the harvest and its bounty, moreover, Thanksgiving falls under a category of festivals that spans cultures, continents and millennia. In ancient times, the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans feasted and paid tribute to their gods after the fall harvest. Thanksgiving also bears a resemblance to the ancient Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. Finally, historians have noted that Native Americans had a rich tradition of commemorating the fall harvest with feasting and merrymaking long before Europeans set foot on their shores.

It is once again that time where the causeway gazette goes out to everyone local to the area and for me to push a little knowledge your way. This review is not just about hunting and fishing and I want to show that this month. There are many different things to get out there and do to have fun and just enjoy yourself and your surroundings. As I have mentioned before, New Jersey has various parks, lakes, and hiking trails to offer. Many of them allow you take a registered motor vehicle out to enjoy parts of the woods that you would not

Roundup Thanksgiving and Christmas Turkey How To...

What you will need: • 3 lemons, cut in half • 1 whole turkey • Mayonnaise • 1 cup Salt • 1/2 cup Pepper • 1 tbs Thyme • 1 tbs Rosemary • 1 tbs Sage • 1 tbs Nutmeg • 2 Cups Orange Juice • 1/2 gallon Hot water • A plastic tub large enough to fit your turkey into and into your fridge

Directions You are going to want to brine your turkey. The night before roasting, remove the giblets and turkey neck.

Rinse the turkey inside and out. Prepare your brine. by adding hot water, salt, pepper, thyme, rosemary, sage, nutmeg, orange juice, and lemons into a large bowl. Be sure to mix ingredients until all of the salt is dissolved.

Be sure to cool it to room temperature before brining.

Place your turkey, breast down into large tub. Be sure the container will fit in your fridge. Add brine, covering the entire turkey. Place in the refrigerator for (12 lbs. or less: 8 to 12 hrs.; 13 lbs. or over: 15 to 20 hrs.) Pre-heat oven to 300. When finished brining, put turkey into roasting pan and smother with mayonnaise and add a little bit of the brining liquid to the bottom of the pan. Cover and place into oven for about 3 hours while basting the turkey every 45 mins to an hour. Uncover and let bake for an extra hour at 400* Use an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh, near the bone should read 180 degrees. Once finished, take out and let sit until it has had time to rest. Then serve!

Most people automatically think of The Nutcracker when they think of a holiday ballet and they should, as the AC Ballet has been doing Nutcracker for 33 years. “We’ll always do the Nutcracker but this ballet is very different.” says Phyllis Papa, AC Ballet’s Artistic Director. “It really showcases the company’s versatility because there are all forms of dance incorporated throughout the show”. This particular program had its premiere in 2013 and was such a hit, that the company thought it would be a great way to start the holidays.

Annual Christmas Craft Show

BRANT BEACH – St. Francis Community Center Annual Christmas Craft Show will take place on Saturday, November 21 from 9:30am – 4:00 pm; and on Sunday, November 22 from 9:30am – 2:00 pm at the St. Francis Community Center located at 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach Township, NJ. The Christmas Craft Show should be your first stop for holiday shopping.

Enjoy many new crafts as well as old favorites. Highlights include: sea glass, jewelry, holiday items, homemade baskets, many forms of art, shell and metal crafts, baby gifts, pottery, skin care and so much more! There is something for everyone!

BRANT BEACH - Attention all Community Members! It’s that time again to think about our Gift of Warmth Project! St. Francis Community Center annual holiday project is underway and we need your help. This project is focused on keeping the children in our community warm throughout the winter. In past years, this project has provided over 800 children with blankets, clothing and footwear.

If you are interested in being a part of this year’s project you can help in the following ways: • Sponsor a family: provide “Gifts of Warmth” to all children in a particular family. If you would like to sponsor a family or need more information please call 609-494-8861 ext. 194.

• Monetary Donations (including gift cards) may be mailed to: 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Long Beach Township, NJ 08008 or dropped off at the front desk of the Community Center.

• Grab a Tag! Tags with gift requests are located at St. Francis Community Center and at the Brant Beach Church. Tags are also available at trees located throughout the community: Causeway Chiropractic, Ocean Medical, The Old Causeway Steak & Oyster House, Mud City Crabhouse, Farias Surf and Sport and Murphy’s Market.

Help us attain our goal of serving the children of 275 families within our community. Gifts should be returned no later than December 11 at the St. Francis Community Center foyer.
