Greek Week 2023

CNU three day tradition kicks off with a talent show

On March 27th the majority of CNU Greek Life came together to start Greek Week. This year’s theme is called Greekolodoen. Some of the events held at Greek Week are meant to raise money for each fraternity and sorority’s philanthropy. However, the first event on March 27th did not appear to have that goal. The goal seemed to just bring all of the Greek Organizations together. The first event of Greek Week was a Talent Show. There were a variety of acts. The first was a drum solo by Zen Taylor of Pi Lambda Phi. One that

What’s Inside

stood out was a miniature fashion show by Henry Sergent of FIJI. While Sergent did not say much about his clothing brand, one of his shirts featured in the picture above said “Stop Shein Hauls.”

A popular theme amongst the performances was lip syncing. Alpha Phi submitted a music video reenacting One Direction’s song “Best Song Ever.” The Alpha Phi members leaned into the reenactment and dressed as the One Direction Members. Alpha Sigma Alpha did something similar but live. They lip synced several songs one of which being “Baby” by Jus-

The

tin Bieber. These members also chose to wear a costume dressed as the singers of the songs they were lipsyncing. Their routine also included choreography that the crowd went wild for.

Alpha Kappa Alpha performed the hit song from the show Victorious “Take a Hint.” The two members sang and danced to the entire song. They received a good amount of cheer from the audience. Sigma Phi Epsilon also performed a duet, but brought their own instruments. In a guitar and piano duet the two brothers sang “Something in the Orange” by Zach Bryan. The crowd was enthusias-

tic about the performance.

Gamma Phi Beta also performed a duet. One sister was on the piano and one was singing “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. The crowd held up their flashlights from their phones to express their approval.

The next Greek Events are Tuesday March 28th at 6pm on the Greek Lawn. The event is called “Greekolodoen Cuisine.”

On Wednesday March 29th at 7pm is an event called “Double Dare” which is described to be a trivia event on @cnugreeklife on Instagram. Thursday

March 30th at 6pm is “Greek Olympics” which is exactly what it sounds like. Each organization will have teams to compete in playing a variety of physically involved games. Finally, on Friday March 31st at 5pm an event called “Krowd Pleaserz” which is described to be a festival.

The Penny Wars continue throughout the week which is when each organization has a table in the David Student Union with jars to collect the most pennies. The winner will get to donate all of the pennies from the other organizations.

Printer Issues

Staff Writer shares their struggles as well as other students’ experiences with the printers

Writing that four page paper for English will not be easy. What about that eight page paper that is coming up in Leadership? Let’s face it, writing a paper is hard enough; citations and all. What we shouldn’t have to deal with on top of writing the paper are the worries of not being able to print because of the recent printer malfunctions throughout campus.

My personal horror story with one of the printers happened in the library at around 12am. I had just finished editing my essay to turn in for my English class. When trying to use the printer, my CNU ID declined, as it said that I did not have access to use the printer. I thought that this might’ve been just an error with the library printers, but the ones in McMurran and Luter were doing the exact same thing. My last attempt was to head to the DSU in the morning once it opened back up and then use the printer on the second floor. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Claire, why did you decide to print your essay at 12am?” Yes, I understand your concerns, but as someone who is practically on the run from dawn until dusk, being able to stop in the library to print things out is pretty much impossible depending on how booked my calendar is. The printers in general should be working around the clock without any issues and interruptions. A couple malfunctions here and there are alright. However, for people like me who are in a time crunch and therefore cannot improvise, need more reliance on the printer’s functionality to ensure that papers are able to be turned in in a timely manner.

Not only have I been experiencing issues with the printer, but other CNU students have been sharing their growing concerns over printing malfunctions. “I have had many problems with the printers here at CNU. The first two times, there was a connection issue regarding the printer and at some point in the semester, my card had stopped working for the printer and I couldn’t print out any of my assignments” described freshman David Okonkwo. Another student, freshman Mason Lee, also addresses his concerns regarding failure of the printers, “There have been three times when I was unexplainably denied

access to the printers. I would send my documents to the proper printer or website and when I scanned my card at the printer, it said there was an authentication error.” Not only is this stressful and time consuming for students who have already spent so long writing an essay, but can also create consequences such as a late grade from a professor when not turning the paper in on time. This can be costly to one’s grade. “The issue forced me to turn in a paper late. Fortunately I had an understanding professor.” said Lee. My hope is that we can look into printing issues as soon as possible in order to save others the stress of having to print. Once we are able to accomplish this, then students can use any printer they choose without feeling anxious that their stuff will not print on time to be turned in.

Recap of Public Hearing on Proposed Tuition and Fees

On March 16 CNU’s Board of Visitors held a public comment hearing on the university’s tuition and fees budget for the upcoming year. The Board of Visitors sets the tuition and fees and will meet in the coming month for the 20232024 budget.

Although the Board of Visitors made the public comment portion of the meeting available to anyone who registered to speak, no one came forward to address the Board with comments. The Board of Visitors spent most of the meeting going over money allocation and changes in funding for the university.

The university receives spending money from two places, with about 30% coming from state tax dollars as CNU is a public university. The other 70% comes from tuition, fees, gifts, grants and more.

This money goes to 4 major avenues. First is Education and General which takes 51% of the money. The next is Auxiliary Enterprises which comprises housing, dining, counseling, athletics and more which takes 41% of the budget. 7% is used for student financial assistance and 1% is used for sponsored research.

The meeting then went over the instate tuition and fees cost for Christopher Newport. It was $14,754 in 20182019, 14,924 in 2019-2020, 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. In 2022-2023 it was $15,425 however students would receive $275 dollars back. Thus tuition was actually the same as previous years but the fees went up slightly.

Chart showing tuition prices over the years, from cnu.edu

CNU was the 6th most expensive instate university for total cost for the 2022-2023 school year at $27,415. In addition, they were 11th for out of state total cost at $40,653.

There were two years of state mandated 5% pay raises. Along with three years of minimum wage increases going from $7.25 to $12.00 an hour. There were inflationary increases, especially in utilities. There were enrollment adjustments, meaning smaller freshman classes, along with a one time covid

funding. This covid fund was a one time occurance in which CNU received money from state and federal levels to help offset costs that were negatively impacted by COVID. This included money from a federal grant that would help provide financial aid to students for unexpected expenses due to the pandemic.

The Board of Visitors suggested that there could be an increase in tuition from $0.00 to $793.00 (0%-8.5%). There could also be an increase in the comprehensive fee from $0.00-$300.00

(0%-5%) and a possible increase in the technology fee from $0.00 to $170.00 (0%-250%).

They also discussed a recommended Music fee increase by $125 to bring it to $350 a lesson, and a recommended laboratory fee increase from $25 to $75. The third recommendation is to increase the arts laboratory fee by $25 to $75.

The Luter school of Business needs about $600,000 to help address different needs for it to be able to function and run efficiently. These needs range from doing more outreach with business connections to classroom technology and more.

There will be about $6.2 million in costs that CNU has to account for next year that they will have to pay. For instance they need to cover the loss of $1.5 million in federal stimulus funds and account for an increase in utilities which is estimated at $0.4 million. CNU needs to account for these two expenses plus additional cost drivers next year. They have ways to account for up to $3.3 million of that, but there will have to be decisions made about how to deal with the rest of the $6.2 million.

The board will meet on April 14 where they will determine the tuition and fees for next year. Though, as Amie Dale, Secretary to the Board of Visitors noted in an email to the CNU community, the final tuition and fee decision is dependent on the state’s final budget.

Dominion Voting Lawsuit Against Fox News Continues to Unfold

It all started when Trump-aligned lawyer Sidney Powell appeared as a guest on Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo’s show, where Powell discussed “evidence of fraud” relating to the Dominion machines. According to ABC News, in the following weeks, Powell and his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani appeared on several Fox shows to repeat these claims, despite their lack of evidence. The allegations quickly spread throughout right-wing news networks that Dominion was built by associates of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez to rig elections and that its machines switched millions of votes from Trump to Biden.

The New York Times reports that in many of Carlson’s texts, he had expressed his hatred for Donald Trump, and referred to the election fraud claims as “totally off the rails.” Hannity was revealed in a text message to have called the people promoting these claims “F’ing lunatics.” Carlson also called for a colleague to be fired after she fact-checked Trump’s false claims about election theft because it was “hurting the company’s stock price.” Rupert Murdoch, Fox Corporation’s chairman, called the voter fraud allegations “really crazy stuff,” The New York Times reports.

According to NBC News, Abby Grossberg, former senior producer and head of booking for Tucker Carlson, sued Fox last week for coercing her into giving a misleading testimony about the network’s election fraud coverage. She expressed that she was coached into giving misleading testimony by Fox’s legal team. She was then fired from Fox on Friday. These revelations, with likely more to come as the trial progresses, have led some people to question the integrity of Fox News reporters, and how much of their content is just performative for their viewers.

In March 2021, Dominion Voting Systems, which produces machines for casting and counting ballots as well as software to track election results, filed a lawsuit against Fox News for $1.6 billion. The company alleges that in the weeks following the 2020 election, Fox News spread false information regarding the company’s involvement in a plot to steal the election from former President Donald Trump.

ABC News reports that Dominion denied these claims and tried to appeal directly to Fox, but the damage had already been done. The company launched defamation action against Giuliani and Powell in January 2021, and later sued Fox in March.

Many private conversations including texts and emails among the network’s top stars have come to light as a result of the lawsuit. Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, and Sean Hannity were all revealed to have mocked the Dominion claims privately, while denouncing colleagues who questioned them publicly.

On the evening of Monday, March 20th, 2023 at approximately 6:00 pm Eastern time, Arley Vaughn Nemo, age 37, and John Michael Garza, age 43, escaped custody after using a ‘toothbrush and a metal object’ to tunnel their way through their cell wall and over the security wall after using a weakness in the construction of the jail wall to their advantage.

The two men were found to be missing during a regularly scheduled head count at around 7:15 pm Monday night, ABC News reported.

When the two men were located by police after a tip, they were found eating breakfast at an IHOP a town over in Hampton at 3:30 am.

Los Angeles Unified School District Workers go on Strike

AMANDA EACHO

AMANDA.EACHO.22@CNU.EDU

The second-largest school system in the nation, The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) was shut down from Tuesday through Thursday due to its workers going on strike. The New York Times reports that the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Locale 99, who represents around 30,000 LAUSD special education assistants, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, and other supporting staff, announced that they were going on strike on Monday for three days, with the United Teachers of Los Angeles pledging solidarity.

They were seeking a 30% pay increase, stating that employees make just over minimum wage and were struggling to afford the cost of living in Southern California. This shut down more than 1,000 schools in the area, causing parents to scramble to find other accommodations for their children.

According to CBS News, a tentative contract was made Friday. This includes a 30% wage increase and a retroactive pay increase of between $4,000 and $8,000, which will increase the average annual salary of workers from $25,000 to $33,000 and bring the school’s minimum wage up to $22.52 per hour.

However, this, like many other strikes seen recently, nationwide, was about protesting the school district’s labor prices, not over the contract negotiation. Those involved hope that this will bring attention to the extremely underpaid workers who make a huge impact on schools across the country.

Deadly Tornado Wreaks Havoc in Mississippi

On Friday March 24, a deadly tornado began to wreak havoc across Mississippi, killing at least 25 people with dozens left injured.

According to the National Weather Service for Jackson Mississippi, the powerful EF-4 tornado began that Friday night around 8pm about an hour away from Jackson and traveled for roughly 170 miles leaving a massive trail of destruction in its wake.

A place that was hit the hardest was Rolling Fork, a rural town with about 2000 residents in the northwest region of Sharkey County. It was essentially ground zero for the tornado. Roofs of buildings were ripped off, homes were completely leveled, cars were toppled on top of each other, and even the town’s water tower fell to the ground.

mounted, with protests erupting all over the country. In Paris, people can be seen burning trash in the streets, train and air traffic has been affected, and many professions, including oil depots and garbage collectors, are on strike or have walked off the job, according to France 24.

Philippe Martinez, secretary general of the hardline CGT union, told France 24 that he believes millions of people participating in strikes is the best response to give the president. Socialist Party head Olivier Faure chimed in saying, “He has put more explosives on an already well lit inferno.”

Macron told news conferences on Friday that he condemns violence, and has no plans to change because of it.

However, Rolling Fork residents haven’t let this disaster ruin them for good. After being in shelters since Saturday, survivors are finally emerging to assess the damage done to their homes while emergency workers continue to sift through rubble and hand out food and water to those in need, reports NPR.

Electricians have also been racing to fix the power outages that occurred all across the county. In an interview with NPR, survivor Kimberly Berry described how her home was completely demolished, but she wasn’t going to be depressed or mad because she was alive and that’s all that mattered.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves has begun to visit towns impacted by the tornado and President Biden approved a federal disaster declaration for the state which allows federal funding for the affected counties, reports CNN.

Severe weather is still expected throughout the week across multiple southern states, but the Rolling Fork community will continue to come together in the face of this disaster to build each other up and find support.

NBC News reported that the shooter, a former student, brought a handgun and two assault rifles onto school premises. The shooting was planned and began after the suspect shot through a locked door, Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief John Drake told NBC.

Responding officers first received a call about the active shooter at 10:13 a.m. and by 10:27, they had shot the suspect inside the school, according to NBC. Students were bused to a nearby church where they were later reunited with their parents.

Protests Erupt in France Over

Over the last several days, thousands of protestors have rocked the Israeli Capital of Tel-Aviv. These protests and demonstrations have been in opposition to the current government of Israel, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netenyahu, and their effort to make controversial reforms to the Israeli judicial system. This is a move that, through a controversial bill, would curb the independence of the Israeli court system, binding it to the will of the legislative branch and the ruling party.

Some in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cabinet voiced their displeasure with the move, which led to the prompt firing of the country’s defense minister. The situation is difficult, and senior defense officials in the country have given statements to Israeli News outlets (Israeli News 12, Israeli News 13) describing the real possibility of civil war - including Netenyahu himself saying in a public address to the nation that: “[there is] an extreme minority that is ready to tear the country to pieces and ignite a civil war.”

The closest thing to a resolution arrived on Monday March 27, when a deal was struck that would delay the bill’s debate until the next session of the Parliament. The opposition is not satisfied and has made

Pension Reforms

KATHERINE ZICKEL

KATHERINE.ZICKEL.22@CNU.EDU

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, proposed a highly controversial pension reform plan that would include raising the retirement age in France from 62 to 64, Aljazeera stated.

NPR reported that last Thursday, when it became clear the proposal wouldn’t pass France’s Parliament, Macron used a constitutional power to push it forward anyway without a vote. Over 80% of the French population considered the move unjustified, according to an IFOP poll cited by CNN.

In response to this pension, anger has

calls through joint-statements that the Parliament should kill debate on this bill completely. A general strike has been called, and several in the nation’s military have joined in on the strike, namely fighter pilots and special forces reservists.

The Upsets Continue in the Elite Eight

An Unpredictable Tournament Reaches its Final Four

Throughout this year’s NCAA tournament, there have been many surprises. Traditional powerhouses such as Kansas, Duke, and Kentucky were knocked out early, giving way for smaller programs to make a name for themselves. Some have made deep tournament runs which was completely unexpected and has busted a lot of brackets across the country.

The eight teams left in the tournament were Florida Atlantic, Kansas State, UConn, Gonzaga, Miami, Texas, Creighton, and San Diego State. Most of these teams were not favored to get this far, setting up an exciting round of basketball.

Florida Atlantic and Kansas State were locked into a tight battle. Florida Atlantic trailed 57-50 with 12 minutes left but managed to come back due to stellar defense and a huge scoring run. K-State attempted a comeback by trimming an eight-point deficit to a one-point deficit but it was not enough. Two made free throws from Florida Atlantic made it a three-point game and Kansas State could not get a game-tying shot off.

Prior to the tournament, Florida Atlantic had never won a single game in a basketball postseason tournament. Now, in only their second NCAA Tournament appearance, they are heading to the Final Four.

The same could not be said about UConn and Gonzaga. In a surprising turn of events, the UConn Huskies routed the Gonzaga Bulldogs 82-54. They built a 20-point lead after the first intermission and never looked back. Gonzaga was poor throughout, shooting 33% from the field and their star player, All-American Drew Timme, was in foul trouble for most of the contest.

After consecutive first round exits, UConn has embarked on their first deep tournament run since 2014 when they won the National Championship. It will be very exciting to see if they can duplicate their run from nine years ago.

Miami and Texas played in a tight contest. Miami was in the Elite Eight once again, one year after losing to Kansas at this exact same stage in the tournament. They wanted to

make sure they would come out with a win this time and they did, upsetting Texas 88-81. This win marked the first time in program history that Miami had been in a Final Four.

This loss marked the end of an eventful season for Texas. It began with the firing of their head coach Chris Beard over domestic violence charges. This would normally derail a program’s season but Texas ended up being a two seed in the tournament and coming very close to a Final Four berth.

Creighton and San Diego State were the final game of the Elite Eight round. With the game tied at 56, a foul on San Diego State Senior guard Ryan Nembhard put Creighton Senior guard Darrion Trammell at the free throw line with 1.2 seconds left. Trammell sank one of two free throws to give San Diego State a one-point lead. A desperation attempt from Creighton did not work, giving San Diego State the win. This marked San Diego State’s first ever Final Four appearance.

Ja Morant Returns to the Court

How will the NBA Star Recreate his Public Image?

A few weeks ago, Grizzlies superstar point guard Ja Morant was seen as a fan favorite, whose hyper athleticism made him must-watch TV for all basketball fans.

Unfortunately, things have taken a dark turn for Morant in the past few weeks. He has allowed outside influences to taint his reputation. On March 1st, the star point guard was accused of punching and pushing a 17-year-old boy repeatedly. He went on to flash a gun at the boy. The incident occurred in a pickup basketball game at Morant’s house last summer. While Morant and his agent claim that the actions did not happen this way, it still creates bad publicity.

While this would be forgotten by most NBA fans over time, the controversies continued for Morant.

On February 5th, news broke that a red beam had been aimed at Indiana Pacers team members on the team bus. A slow-moving SUV with Morant riding in it trailed the teams bus and aimed a beam into the bus.

This came after an in-game skirmish between Morant’s team, the Memphis Grizzlies and the Indiana Pacers.

During the game, Pacers players repeatedly jabbed at Morant’s father, and his long-time friend Davonte Pack. This sparked the post-game antics.

When there was speculation on if the laser was attached to a gun or not, a Pacers security guard said, “That’s 100% a gun.” Morant’s issues were handled in-house and the team was fully compliant with the league’s investigation.

Morant was able to avoid major trouble for both offenses but couldn’t avoid punishment for his next mishap. On March 4th, a video circulated of Morant wielding a firearm in a Denver nightclub. He was on Instagram Live in the nightclub following a 97113 loss to the Denver Nuggets. Morant was separated from the team on the same day and the NBA began an investigation on the event.

Following the event, Morant made a statement to the public in which he said that he took “full responsibility for (his) actions last night” and was “going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and (his) overall well-being.”

Morant was given an 8 game suspension from the NBA and was suspended indefinitely by the Grizzlies. In his time away from the team, he went to a facility in Florida to find ways to deal with his stress.

On March 21st, Morant was permitted to return to the team after serving his suspensions. Since his antics calmed down, he has gone back to being the high-flying player he was prior to his suspension. On the court, he has shown signs of rust but that is expected after missing 13 games. Despite the aforementioned rust, Morant has showcased the great skill, athleticism, and excitement that made him a fan favorite.

Even though Ja has calmed down and gotten back to his old ways, he can’t reverse his actions. He has reportedly lost out on 30 million dollars in sponsorships and advertisements. Morant will have to make a concerted effort to stay under the radar and help his team have as much success as possible for the next few years.

On the No Chill Podcast, Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas said, “[Morant] really is going to have to sit back and reimage himself.” This will create curiosity as to how Morant will do this after being involved in a number of controversies in a short span of time.

NFL Transaction Season Part 2

NFL Teams Continue to Improve Their Rosters

As the NFL offseason heats up, more teams look to sure up their lineups and put themselves into position to compete next season. Each team has a different idea on how to improve their roster which creates intriguing news.

One team that is currently rebuilding is the Carolina Panthers. They have the first overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft and are preparing their team to add one of the many young quarterbacks available.

Recent reports say they are very high on Florida’s Anthony Richardson. Standing 6 ‘4’’, 244 lbs, and running a 4.43 40-yard dash, Richardson is indisputably one of the best athletes we’ve ever seen at not only the quarterback position but football in general.

While Richardson is the most athletic QB in this class, CJ Stroud has been deemed the prototypical quarterback. This is due to his frame, accuracy, and decision-making. His maturity should also make him a top NFL player.

The Panthers will have a tough decision on who to draft but with the number one pick, they should be able to get a generational player regardless of the direction they head towards.

Another team looking to rebuild is the Seattle Seahawks who just signed former All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner. Although Wagner is getting older, he is still an effective player. He had previously been a Seahawk for 11 seasons before being cut last offseason and signing with the Los Angeles Rams. The Seahawks will look for him to add leadership to their young defense in an attempt to put

the Seahawks closer to Super Bowl contention.

The New York Jets are looking to be contenders for the first time in a while. They just signed Mecole Hardman to add speed to their receiving core.

While it’s always good to have receivers with game-breaking speed like Hardman, The Jets made this move to convince Aaron Rodgers to play for them. Rodgers has teased wanting to be a Jet but it has been reported that he has a list of demands before he will play for them. It will be interesting to see if the Jets draft more offensive or defensive players.

Lastly, the Baltimore Ravens appear to have angered their franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson as he requested a trade early Monday morning. This comes in the wake of the Ravens giving Jackson the nonexclusive franchise tag which allows other teams to trade for him. The team did not expect this to happen as the Ravens believed that they would be able to keep Jackson or trade him without causing drama. It should be interesting to see what happens with the former MVP going forward as there could be a number of teams in line for his services.

You’re Never Too Old To Start Screaming A Review of

There was a lot of doubt cast on Scream VI before its release. It has a new setting in NYC as opposed to southern California, a focus on the new characters from Scream V, and no Sidney Prescott. The actor that played Prescott, Neve Campbell, declined to appear as Sidney because she felt she wasn’t going to be paid the proper amount for her role as the franchise’s central character. However, the end result is one of the most entertaining Scream films yet and one of the most entertaining slasher films in the past decade.

The film follows the four survivors from Scream V: Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera), the illegitimate child of one of the first film’s murdering masterminds Billy Loomis, her half sister Tara (Jenna Ortega), and their friends, twins Cindy and Chad (Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding).

The four are still dealing from the trauma of the previous film while attending college in NYC. Sam is also dealing with an online conspiracy theory that she masterminded the previous film’s killings and her

father’s voice in her head. Their fragile peace is shattered when a new Ghostface emerges to unleash carnage.

The film also sees the return of Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere). While Gale is a franchise mainstay, Kirby is a recurring character who gained a cult following among Scream fans since her first appearance in Scream IV (2011). The movie features numerous callbacks to the previous films from verbal references to literal items from the first few flicks.

But there’s also so much new within this film. Scream VI is hands down the bloodiest film in the franchise. The film’s mystery is also much stronger than the previous Scream.

It’s almost impossible to figure out who the killer is until the final reveal. It also finds a way to truly put Scream within the modern world and the modern world of horror. Smartphones are one thing, but having Ghostface blend in with

Scream 6

a crowd of cosplayers was a small stroke of genius. It also takes central parts of the Scream franchise in a new light.

The opening scenes of every Scream film have Ghostface attack and/or kill someone, and the victim is usually played by a notable actor. The movie starts off that way but takes a complete 180 right afterward and you’re on the edge of your street because you know the rules have now been flipped.

This bloody flick is the most chaotic and wild Scream film in a long time. This shows that slasher films can still be enjoyable watches in the modern day.

If you’re looking for a good film this weekend, Scream VI is one of the right choices. On the possibility of a seventh Scream, the film’s directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet expressed optimism that they could get it made and that the next one will hopefully have Neve Campbell return

as Sidney Prescott. Overall, it’s a franchise that has a major fanbase that spans generations and will most likely not be ending any time soon.

The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day Performance Ever

Niall Horan, everyone’s favorite Irishman, sang at the White House

Singer-Songwriter, Niall

Horan performed at the White House for the St. Patrick’s day celebration on Friday, March 17th. Horan, who is an Irish native, rose to fame as a part of the popular boy band, One Direction, before they split in 2015. Since then, he’s released two solo albums with his third, “The Show”, about to drop on June 9th. He is also currently a coach on the NBC show, “The Voice’.

On March 16th, Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House Press Secretary, tweeted, “It doesn’t get better than this! I think I speak for all the music lovers in the Biden-Harris Administration when I say we can-

not wait to welcome @NiallOfficial to the White House tomorrow for a special performance to celebrate St. Patrick’s day!”

Horan eagerly responded, “It’s an honour to be invited and represent my country. Looking forward to performing and celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at the White House tomorrow.”

During his performance, he cracked a few jokes, including, “If you know the words, sing along. If you don’t, don’t try.”

His set included four songs, three from his solo career before finishing with a cover of

an Irish classic. He started off with his newest single, Heaven, from his upcoming album.

Between the first two songs, he stated, “I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared in my life.” He then went on to perform his song, Flicker, and his first solo single, This Town, which he said was written about his hometown, Mullingar in County Westmeath. He finished with a cover of the folk ballad, Spancil Hill, which is a song about emigration.

His performance was very simple but it really showcased his talent. President Biden even stated after the perfor-

mance, “It’s amazing what song does, and you do it so well,” while discussing how Horan’s set reminded him of the places he’s lived.

Among his audience was President Joe Biden, VicePresident Kamala Harris, The Taoiseach - Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar with his partner, Matt Barrett. The former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Irish Rugby star Rob Kerney, and Democrat Senator Chris Coons were also in attendance. They were all gathered in the East Room for the performance.

After Horan’s set, Presi-

dent Biden came up on the stage and gave him a friendly embrace, stating “Well, you sure as hell didn’t seem nervous to me!” and later told him to “Come back anytime.” Afterwards, Horan and President Biden posted a video of them on Instagram, wishing everyone a happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Selena and Hailey: The Drama Continues

Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber have been pitted against each other ever since Hailey married Justin Bieber in 2018, six months after his split with Gomez in March. Since then, there have been many online judgements and criticisms against both ladies which has led many people to choose sides.

The most recent drama revolves around the fact that people thing Selena Gomez approved of TikToks where Hailey Bieber and Kylie Jenner were called mean girls after supposedly making fun of Gomez’s eyebrow lamination.

However, it seems like the two stars have reconciled their differences and waved their white flags, asking for the rumors and hate to come to an end.

In a statement put out on her Instagram story on March 24, Selena Gomez asked her followers to stop attacking Hailey Bieber and that she has never stood for bullying in any form. According to her post, Hailey Bieber reached out to Selena Gomez

and said she had even been receiving death threats.

“This isn’t what I stand for. I’ve always advocated for kindness and really want this all to stop,” Selena Gomez concluded in her statement.

Later that same day, Hailey Bieber released a statement in response and thanked Selena Gomez for sticking up for her and added that the two of them are currently trying to figure out how to move past the drama between them.

“The last few weeks have been very hard for everyone involved and millions of people are seeing so much hate around this which is extremely harmful,” Bieber stated. “Things can always be taken out of context or construed differently than they were intended. We all need to be more thoughtful about what we post and what we say, including myself.”

While it seems like Hailey Bieber is admitting to the fact that she actually did make fun of Selena Gomez, what matters is that she took

‘Please Don’t Destroy’

Saturday Night Live is in the midst of its 48th season and the show has been going strong despite several members of the cast leaving at the end of the 47th season.

This season has had some strong hosts like Jenna Ortega, Brendan Gleeson, and Austin Butler. One of the highlights and undoubtedly the new favorite recurring skits of the current era of the show is the trio known as Please Don’t Destroy.

The trio is composed of Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy. The three met as students at NYU and formed the trio in 2017. They began performing live shows and performed at the NY Comedy Festival in 2018.

For the next few years they began uploading their sketches onto YouTube. Their big break came during the pandemic when they, like many other comedians, began to upload shorter videos onto

TikTok and Twitter. The trio was hired as writers by SNL in October of 2021, where Higgins and Herlilhy’s dads are producers, and have been on fire ever since.

They produce video sketches, mostly set in the crowded office within the 30 Rock building, as well as write other sketches for the show, including the famed Weekend Update. All of their sketches have exceeded 1 million views on YouTube. They’re even getting a film later this year produced by Judd Apatow.

Whether it’s with the night’s host, other cast members, or just themselves, the trio has been able to turn their sketches into hilarious roller coaster rides. They can do a sketch where they pitch plastic t-shirts to Austin Butler, having a song where Pete Davidson and Taylor Swift taunt them, and one where they drink weird hard seltzers.

The three of them have got all the necessary tenants to make their sketches appeal to a new audience. They’re absurd, surreal, and self depreciating. A perfect cocktail of crazy and funny. It says some-

responsibilities for her own actions and both Selena Gomez and her are trying to make amends.

Justin Bieber has chosen to remain silent on the topic which seems to upset many fans since they think he should be sticking up for his wife as well but things seem to be going well between the two as they’ve been spotted out in public on dates in the last couple of days.

Ultimately, no one knows the truth except Selena Gomez and hailey Bieber but hopefully them and the rest of the world can leave this petty drama behind.

“In the end, I believe love will always be bigger than hate and negativity, and there is always an opportunity to meet each other with more empathy and compassion,” Hailey Bieber concluded in her statement. While people may have their own opinions, one cannot and should not argue with Bieber’s belief. Hopefully, it will ring true.

the Highlight of SNL

thing about a comedian when they’re okay telling jokes and being the butt of the jokes. The three also compliment each other well, they all have similar styles of comedy and the jokes land extremely well due to their chemistry.

Please Don’t Destroy works because they, like most who watched SNL in the 2000s to 2010s, grew up on the absurd and surreal digital shorts like The Lonely Island and Laser Cats.

Their unpredictability gives you something to look forward to. It is impossible to say that they’re keeping the show alive, but these insane recurring sketches give the SNL audience something to look forward to every week. The PDD boys are only getting better with their unique style and it’s a treat to see them on Saturday or on their own or the SNL YouTube channel. It’s undeniable that they’re a hot commodity and will continue to go places in the future.

Best On-Campus Places to Relax Outdoors

Spring weather is here, so read to find out the best places on campus to relax outdoors

Goodbye heavy winter jackets, oversized knit sweaters, and colorful scarves. Hello warm weather and longer days! As the semester progresses and the warmth of springtime spreads throughout campus, people have begun spending more time outside. Cornhole, frisbee and other outdoor games are now in full swing. In addition, many students who braved the cold, dreary winter weather, have now pulled out their picnic blankets and hammocks. In the afternoons, an array of colorful blankets cover The Great Lawn. Students relax in the sun with a good book or chat with friends, making campus look like the picturesque catalogs handed out in the admissions office. With everyone outdoors all at once, eager to enjoy the warm atmosphere that comes with spring, it can be hard to find a peaceful place to relax. So here’s a list of the five best relaxation locations on campus!

Trible Library Balconies

If you’re not a huge fan of sitting in mushy grass, or you just despise bugs and other creepy crawlies, then the

Trible Library balconies are perfect for you! Take your lunch or homework with you and find a nice table on one of the outdoor balconies. This place provides natural sunlight, while also being quieter than The Great Lawn, making it perfect for study sessions. In addition, depending on where you sit,

the view makes for great people watching!

Gosnold Lawn

The Great Lawn can be a little crowded at times; people play their music on speakers, toss frisbees around, and play fetch with their pets. If you’re looking to sunbathe in peace or have a quiet conversation

with friends, then Gosnold Lawn, between Santoro and Forbes, is your best bet. Of course, it’s not quite as picturesque as The Great Lawn, but it tends to get less foot traffic than the center of campus.

Benches or Picnic Tables

You can find a green bench

or picnic table throughout the main campus, but not all of them offer the same experience. It’s all about finding the right location for you. Do you like shade or direct sun? Do you like being in high traffic areas or would you prefer something a little more secluded, tucked away from everything else. Maybe you actually enjoy the ringing of the bell tower, in which case, the benches nearby would be perfect for you. Or perhaps, you and your friends love big trees and would have fun eating lunch at the picnic table near James River Hall.

Hammocks

Close your eyes. Picture the ocean, palm trees and sand. Doesn’t that sound nice? With a little imagination and a sturdy hammock, you can

recreate this vibe right here on campus! A lot of students like to set up their hammocks amongst the trees in front of Warwick River Hall. This is perfect for cozying up with a good book or taking a quick afternoon nap.

The Rocking Chairs by Christopher Newport Hall

If you appreciate a good rocking chair, then Christopher Newport Hall is the place to be! There are rocking chairs on the first and second floors. Also, if you go around to the back of the building, there are more chairs in the courtyard with the fountain. This is an especially nice environment if you find the sound of falling water to be soothing or if you just want a private place to hang out.

Soundscapes

On March 26th,the Soundscapes Benefit Concert was put on by CNU’s music Greek organizations, Nu Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Iota, Phi Mu Alpha, and Kappa Kappa Psi. The concert was put on to raise money for the Soundscapes non profit organization, which works to help provide opportunities for students in the Virginia Peninsula via free after school programs, weekend and summer programs, and through a partnership with the Peninsula Youth Orchestra.

The event, MC’d by Phi Mu Alpha President Levi Langolf, featured great performances by the Brothers and Sisters of the various CNU Greek groups. Opening the show was the student clarinet choir ensemble Silver Keys which performed the peaceful theme of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and then went to the more jazzy song Zoot Suit Riot, covering the whole spectrum of what the clarinet could do. It was followed by a great performance by the band Sisters of Sisyphus, made up of NKE members, who performed two alternative rock hits, “Thnks fr the mmrs” by Fall Out Boy and “Sweater Weather” by The Neighbourhood. Then came the unique duet of the classic song “Just The Two of Us” on kazoos by KKPsi members Taylor Nordike and Max King.

Then came an excellent violin and trumpet duet by the event’s MC Levi Langoff and Kaysea Calvert. Following that, the sisters of NKE performed their chorale and a rendition of Holding

Managing Stress and Anxiety

Here are a few tips to help ease your stress and anxiety heading into finals

Out for a Hero, with Chip Herrera and Becca Matthews as excellent soloists. The brothers of Phi Mu Alpha came out with three a cappella songs (Viva L’amour, Hello Mary Lou, Brother to Brother) and then the sisters of Sigma Alpha Iota performing three a capella songs of their own (The Sigma Alpha Iota chorale, So Near So Dear is Sigma Alpha Iota, and Pipers of Pan). Two special guests from the Soundscapes performed a viola and cello duet

Another band of students, KKPSi’s Thirstiest Percussionists, entertained the crowd with awesome percussion covers of Margaritaville and Tequila.

George Thorogood & The Destroyers 2: Electric Boogaloo, a band of Phi Mu Alpha brothers, shocked (pun intended) the audience with a completely electronic cover, meaning only using electronic instruments, of the song “Bad to the Bone”.

Kappa Kappa Psi returned to the stage after with three great songs; the Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity Song, a medley of Dragon Ball Z songs, and Cruel Angel’s Thesis (from the hit anime Neon Genesis Evangelion)

The event was closed with all the Greek organizations’ beautiful performance of the classic love song, Can’t Help Falling in Love. Soundscapes 2023 was definitely a wonderful event and one you should consider attending in the future to support our CNU Music Greeks and enjoy wonderful music.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious and stressed as the end of the semester approaches? Do you feel like everything is piling up and you don’t know what to do or how to handle it? Here are a few tips to help you ease your stress and anxiety.

Take some time for yourself College can be stressful and overwhelming, especially with constantly being around others. Taking some muchneeded time for yourself, even if it is only for a few minutes a day, can do wonders to ease your stress and anxiety. Also making sure you take breaks when studying for finals can go a long way in keeping you from becoming overwhelmed and anxious. This can, in turn, help you get back into a better mindset when you start studying again.

Spend some time outside

The spring weather has made being outside much more tolerable, so I suggest spending at least a few minutes a day outside. Getting some Vitamin D will boost both your energy and your attitude. Find some friends to go on a walk with or kick a ball around on The Great Lawn. Even bringing a blanket and laying down outside to get some homework done might help ease your stress as well.

Eating Healthy and Drinking Water

A change in diet will help with not only your physical health but your mental health as well. Being sure to eat enough, as well as covering the basic food groups with what you are eating, will help with your energy levels. A rise in energy levels from eating healthier can help you think more clearly and feel more alert. Drinking enough water is also very important to your mental health, because just like eating healthy, it keeps the brain clear and gives you more energy.

Keep your living space clean

For some people, their living space is a reflection of their mental health and stress levels. By taking the time

each day just to pick up around the room and keep it clean, you can ease your mental state. It is super easy to just let go and not think about cleaning up your room, but as soon as you do, you could feel a lot better which might give you the motivation to handle the other stressors in your life.

Go to the counseling center

It is not new information that people feel differently about counseling and therapy, but I am here to tell you that it is one of the best things to help improve your mental health. Having someone to just listen to you and provide advice as well as support is a blessing. You may feel

uncomfortable at first if you have never tried counseling before, but once you get over the hump of going the first few times, you’ll see just how much help it can be. To make an appointment in the CNU Counseling Center, call (757) 594-7047.

Now I know not all of these tips will work for everyone, but just by trying a couple you might see some serious changes in your mental health and overall attitude. When going into finals, implement some of these into your life and see how they are able to reduce stress and anxiety.

Disclaimer: These methods are for reducing stress and anxiety. If you are experiencing severe mental health issues please seek help from a professional.
