student who walks past greets him with a smile that he returns brightly and filled with enthusiasm. Dudley always asks students about things happening in their lives and also remembers which students have practice, who has been injured and getting excited for them when they recover. When he began working here at CNU, he immediately felt as though the campus and the student body welcomed him with open arms. For a while Dana worked a second job outside of CNU as a martial arts trainer. However, he expressed that while he finds joy in martial arts and athletics, he was brought down by the job just as often as he was brought up. Working at Regs however, he admitted, brought him up far more.

That being said, Dudley did not have to give up his love of athletics when working here. Senior Hanna Cecil connected with Dudley when she was a freshman over a dance competition he judged. Dana has helped judge many dance competitions at CNU, including Stroll, Unleashed and Best Dance Crew, as well as taking up a post as being the sideline coach to the girls basketball team, who’s opening game was Jan. 18.

International Affairs Update: “Our City, Our Story, Our Moment:”

Fatal shooting at school in Sweden

On Feb. 4, Sweden experienced its worst mass shooting in the nation’s history, resulting in the deaths of 10 people at the Risbergska school, an adult education centre in Orebro. Included in the death toll was the suspected gunman, who as of right now had unclear motivations for the attack.

BBC News reported that Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated in a press conference that “it is difficult to take the magnitude of what has happened today.” With several more injured, the death toll is anticipated to rise.

Earthquakes in Santorini

As of Feb. 4, thousands have been reported to be evacuating the Greek island of Santorini as numerous earthquakes take place. BBC News reported that approximately 9,000 people have already evacuated with more than 300 earthquakes taking place in less than 48 hours. One of the earthquakes, amongst the hundreds, reached a magnitude of 5.3.

Prime Minister Kryiakos Mitsotakis and Santorini Mayor Nikos Zorzos have encouraged civilians to remain calm and to proceed with caution. Mayor Zorzos has also stated that he is implementing plans for building shelters and providing food if the mass shaking continues.

Newport News 2025 State of the City Address

Last Thursday, Jan. 30 was the annual Newport News State of the City Address hosted right here on campus in the Ferguson Center for the Performing Arts. The State of the City Address is a speech given by the mayor to outline the achievements from the year as well as proposed policy and improvement areas for the city, and this year’s slogan was “Our City, Our Story, Our Moment.”

Mayor Phillip Jones, who took office in Jan. 2023 as the youngest directly elected mayor in Newport News history, reflected on the year in areas of economic growth, public safety and city development. Former Newport News mayors were also in attendance, including Barry E. Duval, Joseph C. Ritchie and McKinley L. Price.

President Kelly gave a welcoming address expressing appreciation for the strong partnership between Christopher Newport University and the city of Newport News, citing the many volunteer and professional relationships fostered between CNU students and faculty and the Newport News community.

President Kelly remarked that he hopes members of the Newport News community will con-

sider CNU their “hometown university” and participate in many of the public events that CNU has to offer.

Following President Kelly’s address, Mayor Jones began his statement. Jones celebrated Newport News for being recognized back in August as an All-American City for the first time in Newport News history. The All-American City award honors cities that demonstrate civic engagement, collaboration, inclusiveness and innovation.

Jones additionally reflected on city development projects, highlighting his intention to expand the downtown area via “mixed-use developments, modern infrastructure and dynamic public spaces.” Jones discussed plans in place to create a “streamlined rapid permit process” for entrepreneurs in order to create a “businessfriendly” city as well as efforts to ensure accreditation for all Newport News public schools by 2030.

WAVY News reported that Jones additionally outlined his continued commitment to public safety as his “number one” priority, reporting that last year marked a “25%” decrease in gun violence and a “52%” decrease in homicides.

Jones also disclosed plans to increase the police force to over 500 officers, which would make it the largest police force in Newport News history. These efforts are in line with larger public safety efforts in the Commonwealth, such as Operation Bold Blue Line and Operation Ceasefire, that target gun violence.

Mayor Jones closed his address by remarking, “this is our moment,” highlighting a commitment to dynamic growth and change in Newport News for the better.

January Aviation Disasters

A look into the plane crashes of Washington D.C. and Philadelphia

CLAIRE HALL

CLAIRE.HALL.22@CNU.EDU

Within a span of a week, two major plane crashes located in Washington D.C and Philadelphia occurred. Many individuals within the United States have expressed concerns with air travel in response to these disasters.

On Jan. 29 at 6:18 p.m., American Eagle Flight 5342, departed Wichita, Kansas with 60 passengers and four crew members. Two hours later at 8:48 p.m., dashcam footage captures the collision.

CBS News explained that this happened, “15 minutes before the American flight was originally scheduled to land.”

The Federal Aviation Administration then issued an alert warning of an aircraft incident which had issued alerts to police, fire and airport authorities. Flight 5342 had collided with an Army helicopter while approaching Reagan National Airport’s runway.

This accident has since raised concern as the public had many questions as to how this could’ve happened. According to CBS News, “In communication leading up to the collision, an air traffic controller appears to communicate with the Army helicopter to make sure its pilot’s see the plane.”

The air traffic controller was quick to point out this disturbance, asking the pilot, “Do you have C.R.J in sight?” according to a radio traffic feed on LiveATC.net. The helicopter pilot responds, saying that he will use ‘visual separation’ to make sure he stays a safe distance away from the plane. However, this immediately caused both aircraft to collide.

At around 8:00 p.m., the first emergency units arrive on scene, finding the wreckage of the plane in the Potomac river. A search and rescue immediately began as boats and divers started searching the area for survivors.

The next morning, local and federal officials hold a conference at the airport, where they believe that no one from both aircraft had survived the accident. According to NPR.org, 55 of the 67 victims have been recovered from the Potomac. The Army helicopter was believed to have carried three individuals while American Eagle Flight 5342 carried 64 passengers.

Among these victims, 14 were returning home from a national figure skating camp in Wichita, according to Doug Zeghibe, the CEO of the Skating Club of Boston. So far, these were all the victims found among the wreckage: Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova, Jinna and Jin Han, Spencer and Christine Lane, Alexandr Kirsanov, Samuel Lilley, Ian Epstein, Wendy Jo Shaffer, Brielle and Justyna Beyer, Elizabeth Keys, Sean Kay, Angela Yang, Casey Crafton, Grace Maxwell, Olivia Ter, Kiya Duggins, Lindsey Fields, Donna, Peter, Everly and Alydia Liv-

ingston, Jesse Pitcher, Charles McDaniel, Jonathan Boyd, Micheal Stovall, Alexander Huffman, Ryan O’Hara, Andrew Eaves, Sarah Best, Melissa Nicandri, Chris Collins, Jonathan Campos, Rodger, Stephanie and Cory Haynos, Jonathan Boyd and Rebecca Lobach.

Approximately two days later, another deadly aviation accident occurred. On Jan. 31, a medical jet crashed in northeast Pennsylvania, injuring a total of 24 individuals and killing seven; six people on the plane and one person on the ground.

Currently, officials are unaware of what exactly caused the crash. ABC News noted that a preliminary report from the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) is expected in 30 days.

The aftermath of the crash is still being uncovered as cars and items on the road had to be towed due to the massive explosion. One major piece of evidence, a black box, also known as a voice recorder, was buried about 8 feet down into

the massive crater that formed after the crash. In the community, neighbors are setting up memorials by putting out balloons and candles for the victims. This investigation as to what exactly happened is still ongoing and the victim’s identities have not been released yet.

These accidents have caught the attention of people nationwide as many are afraid to set foot on any airplanes. It is unknown if these aviation accidents are both connected, but individuals are already sharing their theories as to what could have possibly happened.

Both of these stories are still under active investigation. The Captain’s Log will continue to try and cover these topics, but encourages readers to check with local and national news outlets for more information.

The Captain’s Log would also like to express its thoughts and concerns for the victims and their families, as many are recovering from the devastating impacts of these fatal aviation accidents.

SPORTS Michigan responds to NCAA investigation

A formal response Lakers acquire Luka Doncic

The Michigan Wolverines have responded to the National Collegiate Athletic Associations’ (NCAA) investigation over sign stealing allegations from the 2023 season.

In their response, the Wolverines accused the NCAA of overcharging the school despite a lack of perceived evidence against them. This was mentioning the Level I violations that centered around the program’s original plan to steal football signals from opponents that was led by former Wolverines analyst Connor Stalions. Chargers were handed to the Wolverines for a pattern of noncompliance. Other charges were given to Stalions, former head coach Jim Harbaugh and two other Michigan football assistants. In the program’s response, the Wolverines claimed that Stalions’ sign-stealing efforts were done legally and not in a different way. As a result, they asked the NCAA to lower their punishments to Level II, a series of infractions that are

A shocking transaction

The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired guard Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team trade.

The trade was announced early on Sunday morning in which the Lakers acquired Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris from the Mavericks in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick. The Utah Jazz received Jalen Hood-Schifino, a 2025 Los Angeles Clippers secondround pick, and a 2025 Dallas Mavericks second-round pick.

“The trade came at a surprise to many around the league as there was no indication that Doncic was available for trade.”

The trade came at a surprise to many around the league as there was no indication that Doncic was available for trade. Doncic, a five-time National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star, had been the cornerstone of the Mavericks franchise for the last half decade as he led them to the NBA Finals last season. However,

less severe than the Level I violations.

Another key finding from the investigation that the Wolverines responded to was a series of text-message exchanges head coach Sherrone Moore had deleted that were between him and Connor Stalions. It had later been revealed that the day the texts were deleted were on the day that the investigation began. Moore had claimed that he deleted the texts with Stalions as he felt that it would take away from the program’s national championship run. However, the school responded by stating that the texts did not relate to the investigation.

While the program’s response may not amount to any changes from the investigation, it was still something the Wolverines needed to do. If the NCAA were to lower the punishments to Level II violations, it would lead to more minor penalties that are seen as more common in nature. Meanwhile, a Level I violation would result in more severe penalties that threaten the integrity of the NCAA.

the Mavericks became concerned with his conditioning as injuries this season have limited him to playing in only 22 games this season. This was believed to be attributed to his sudden gain in weight which reached past 260 lbs.

The other big news of this trade is forward Anthony Davis heading to the Mavericks. In a similar way to Doncic, there had not been an indication that Davis was going to be traded before the league’s trade deadline on Feb. 6. With this move, he will be joining a frontcourt that includes center Daniel Gafford and center Dereck Lively II. With the Mavericks currently ninth in the Western Conference, Davis will bring a veteran presence to a team that hopes to return to the playoffs.

This trade extends the Lak-

ers window of contention. With Doncic teaming up with forward LeBron James, the Lakers have as good of a chance as any team to win this season’s NBA Championship. They currently sit at fifth in the Western Conference and have a good chance to move up the standings.

The Lakers and Mavericks will play each other two more times this season, with the first matchup taking place on Feb. 25 in Los Angeles and the second one occurring on Apr. 9 in Dallas.

Tragedy strikes at Colorado track meet

JANELLE.PINEDA.22@CNU.EDU

A tragic accident at a high school track and field event occurred in Colorado Springs that resulted in the death of a spectator. The accident happened when a hammer throw went uncontrolled and struck someone in the stands. This devastating incident happened on Jan. 26 at a meet that was hosted by the Colorado United Track Club at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.

The victim has been identified as 57-year-old Wade Langston, who was in attendance to support his son, a participant in the event. According to reporters, Langston attempted to shield his wife and son when the 25-pound hammer went beyond the protective netting and struck him in the head. Emergency responders were called to the scene but were unable to save him. He was pronounced deceased on site.

As a result of the accident, the remainder of the track meet was canceled, and authorities

have begun an investigation into the safety measures in place during the event. UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet expressed

deep sorrow and emphasized the institution’s commitment to supporting all of those who were affected in a statement given after

the accident.

Langston leaves behind a grieving family and community. In the aftermath of the accident, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with his son’s future, symbolizing the community’s strong support while they get through this difficult time.

Fatal accidents during track and field events are rare, resulting in questions being raised about the current safety protocols. The hammer throw event typically features a protective net to contain the heavy, fast-moving device. However, accidents like what happened at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs highlights the need for an ongoing evaluation of safeguards.

The university and event organizers have yet to release any more details regarding this investigation. The local community, friends and family continue to mourn the loss of Langston, honoring his memory.

The Weeknd’s bold farewell to his iconic persona A “Hurry Up Tomorrow” review

In a 2023 interview with W, the Weeknd claimed that “Hurry Up” “Tomorrow” would serve as a skinshedding for his career: “The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as the Weeknd,” he said. “I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as the Weeknd. But I still want to kill the Weeknd.” The Weeknd released his longest album to date last Friday, marking the end of the second trilogy in his catalog. A follow up project to “After Hours” and “Dawn FM” is no easy task, but I was impressed with the work that went into this album.

“ Hurry Up Tomorrow” begins with The Weeknd trapped in a state of cynical despair. Dark, doomsdayinspired synths and a pulsing heartbeat set the stage for lyrics that linger in isolation and flirt with the idea of death. But just before he sinks into hopelessness, his harmonies build to a crescendo, leading into an upbeat groove similar to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” It does not sound like a direct sample, but still a nice

nod to the icon The Weeknd is often compared to. Both tracks share a love for the eerie, yet balance their darker themes with an undeniable danceable energy.

Hurry Up Tomorrow is packed with brief interludes that mirror the album’s themes of the emotional toll of touring. “I Can’t F****** Sing,” is a 12-second clip in which The Weeknd expresses frustration over losing his voice, a moment reminiscent of his experience during the end of the After Hours Til Dawn Tour nearly three years ago. Throughout the album’s first half, telephone chimes weave into “Opening Night,” another interlude where The Weeknd confronts his partner, calling her irrational for arguing with him on the opening night of his tour. The following track, “Reflections Laughing,” features his partner on the phone, pleading with him to take better care of himself while he’s on the road.

In this album, The Weeknd largely moves away from the flashy radio pop he’s mastered in favor of exploring

more unconventional styles that challenge and expand his sonic range. A personal favorite of mine, “Reflections Laughing”, echoes the guitars of “Rolling Stone,” but adds anthemic power through choir-like vocals. Plus, I can always appreciate a Florence + The Machine feature, no matter how small.

The Weeknd has always had a knack for collaborating with amazing artists. Playboi Carti on “Timeless” and Lana Del Rey on “The Abyss” were two of the biggest standouts for me. None of the features on this album overshadow Abel, nor are they included without purpose.

Hurry Up Tomorrow is expertly structured, with the more bold, attention-grabbing tracks frontloaded in the first half, while the second half shifts to atmospheric, cinematic soundscapes. The album’s seamless flow is further enhanced by the smooth transitions between various interludes and songs, creating a cohesive listening experience from beginning to end. This was something I loved about Dawn FM and was glad to experience it again in this album.

The Weeknd’s voice has never been more striking than on Hurry Up Tomorrow. His vocal runs toward the end of “Take Me Back to LA” infuse an extra layer of emotion into an already intimate track. His falsetto blends flawlessly with the retro R&B vibes of “I Can’t Wait to Get There.” The album also offers subtle nods to his Trilogy era, with his deeper vocals on several songs serving as a final echo of his earlier sound.

What draws fans like myself to The Weeknd is his ability to tell a story. Hurry Up Tomorrow finishes the “After Hours” Trilogy with some mature storytelling. He ponders on reality in the opener, “Wake Me Up”, questioning if his demons are really chasing him or not. His anxieties take hold of him in “Baptized In Fear” and “Reflections Laughing”, where he questions whether he should give up his Weeknd persona, or continue to please his fans. He reflects on death in various forms, whether it’s the end of love in “Cry For Me” and “Open Hearts,” or his own mortality in “Enjoy The Show.” It’s both revealing and, frankly, a bit somber to hear him express such a sense of defeat (“I don’t wanna make it past

thirty-four, and when the curtains call, I hope you mourn. But if you don’t, I hope you enjoy the f******’ show.”).

Things shift dramatically after “Take Me Back to LA,” where Abel reflects on his early dreams of moving to California and his childhood in Scarborough. From here, the album takes on a deeply introspective, almost self-aware tone. In the fittingly titled “Give Me Mercy,” he pleads for forgiveness, asking God to show him mercy for his past (“Give me mercy like you do and forgive me like you do, hope that you see me”). As the album progresses, he journeys toward “Tomorrow” in “Drive” and ultimately comes to terms with his fate in the title track.

This was a fantastic listen from start to finish, and one of few 20+ track albums that kept me wanting to continue listening. It really feels like a culmination of everything he’s worked on, building toward this cinematic finale. This grand conclusion was absolutely worth the wait and is undoubtedly one of my favorite albums of his to date.

“The album also offers subtle nods to his Trilogy era, with his deeper vocals on several songs serving as a final echo of his earlier sound.”

A historic night at The Grammys:

Fans react to snubs and surprises

The 67th annual Grammy awards was not one to miss. There were many show-stopping performances and history-making wins. The show was also revamped in order to raise funds for MusiCares Fire Relief to help the people of Los Angeles who were affected by the recent wildfires.

Beyoncé finally won Album of the Year for “Cowboy Carter” after being allegedly “snubbed” for the past four years that she’s been nominated. She also became the first Black Woman to win Best Country Album and she won Best Country Duo/Group Performance alongside Miley Cyrus.

Another notable win was Kendrick Lamar, who swept all of his nominated categories, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year, with his Drake diss track, “Not Like Us.” He became the second rapper ever to win in both these categories, after Childish Gambino’s “This is America” in 2019. He dedicated his award to LA, shouting out the fire victims in Altadena and Pasadena.

Docheii also became the third Black woman in history to win Best Rap Album with “Alligator Bites Never Heal,” and gave the audience a tearful speech that credited her success to her sobriety. She also encouraged aspiring Black musicians that they can do it.

Alicia Keys became the first woman to accept the Dr. Dre Global Impact award. She used her speech to show support for women in the industry and advocate for DEI, criticising the Trump administration.

Chappell Roan won Best New Artist and gave a moving speech demanding labels to offer a living wage and healthcare to their artists. She was met with applause and support from many of the artists there.

Along with the awards, there was also a long list of star-studded performances, including a medley of a few of the nominees for Best New Artist, RAYE, Benson Boone, Doechii, Teddy Swims and Shaboozy. Chappell Roan and Sabrinia Carpenter had already performed earlier in the night.

There was also a long tribute to Quincy Jones featuring artists such as Stevie Wonder, Janelle Monae, Cynthia Erivo, Herbie Hancock, Lainey Wilson, Jacob Collier, Ray Charles and Bono.

The Weeknd made a surprising return to The Grammy’s stage after

boycotting the show when his song “Blinding Lights,” the most-streamed song of all time, did not earn any nominations. He was introduced by the Recording Academy’s CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., who acknowledged The Weeknd’s criticisms and claimed that they have listened and learned from them.

What really had the internet talking was both Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift going home empty handed. Chrisopher Newport University junior Lydia Harte expressed her thoughts on this, saying, “I didn’t appreciate [them]getting snubbed, their albums both had big years and for them to go home with nothing was a bit of a shock.” Many fans were disappointed with the lack of acknowledgment for both albums, especially since the Academy had Eilish open the show with a performance of “Birds of a Feather” and they had Swift as a presenter.

Another criticism of the show is the lack of awards given out during the airtime. Many of the awards, such as Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Rock Performance and Best Alternative Music were announced during the pre show.

“I wish the Grammys would have been a little more focused on their purpose – awards – rather than incessant tribute performance. Of course it’s good to perform and recognize the work of someone who is no longer with us, but it did not need to be to that extent or length,”

CNU junior Samuel Ellyson said.

Five must read books by Black authors

Celebrate Black History month with a good read

Black History Month is a time to recognize the vital role that Black individuals and communities have played in shaping history, culture and society. It also serves as a platform to raise awareness of ongoing racial issues and to celebrate Black culture, achievements and resilience. Reading the works of Black authors can offer unique perspectives that reflect the complexity of Black experiences. By reading their works, we get a deeper understanding of the lives, struggles, joys and histories of Black people that are often overlooked in mainstream literature. Here are five must read books to kick off Black History Month.

1. “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store” by James McBride

This is a novel about a small town and the bonds of community that are formed between marginalized groups in order to survive. The novel takes place in the fictional town of Pott’s Landing, where a humble, yet mysterious grocery store called Heaven & Earth, serves as the hub of the local community. The store is owned by Zelda, a complex and formidable Black woman with a rich and painful history. Through her, and the lives of the people around her, the story unfolds to reveal deep secrets about the town’s past, buried histories of racial tensions, trauma and resilience.

2.“The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times” by Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama is America’s first Black first lady, who wrote this deeply personal and reflective book in 2022, nearly four years after her highly successful memoir, “Becoming” (2018), which chronicled her life from childhood through her years as First Lady of the United States. “The Light We Carry” reflects on the personal struggles and challenges she has faced, particularly as a Black woman navigating the complexities of race, identity and public life. The book is structured around the idea of “light” as a metaphor for the inner strength, values, and wisdom each of us carries within us, which can help us navigate difficult times.

3. “Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine”

From a powerful, go-to voice on public health and racial justice, Legacy is an urgent addition to the conversation on race in America from the lens of medicine and healthcare.

Dr. Uché Blackstock recounts her journey as a Black woman entering the medical field, offering a candid and sometimes painful account of the barriers, microaggressions, and discrimination she faced throughout her career. She explores how racism operates within medical institutions, from medical education and patient care to institutional policies and power structures.

4. “The Travelers” by Regina Porter

“The Travelers” follows the story of two families, one Black and one white, throughout six decades of American and world history. The story jumps back and forth through time periods, stitching together a complex tapestry of human experiences and represents Regina Porter’s debut novel.

5. “The Water Dancer” by TaNehisi Coates

“The Water Dancer” is about an enslaved man with a gift for memory. Gaining freedom, the protagonist begins to assist in the freeing of other enslaved people. The story uses themes of magic and spiritualism to paint an intriguing view of history. The book was also an Oprah’s Book Club selection in 2019.

Dana Dudley’s positive effect on the CNU community

Story continued from cover

From the moment you enter Regattas, (or Regs as students across campus refer to it), Dudley shows you how much he cares for every student he sees, whether that be by asking about the hobbies he knows they participate in, or by giving you a compliment that brings light to your day. The care that Dudley expresses to the students that he greets goes above and beyond, allowing him to connect to many of them.

Dudley works Sunday through Wednesday and often for twelve or more hours. This could easily cause exhaustion as well as losing the love for their job for almost anyone, but not Dana Dudley. No matter how many days he works, he still greets every student with such love, care and compassion; his light never dwindling.

Dudley recently lost his parents a few months ago, which was heartbreaking for the person who is so often a beacon of light for everyone. The campus rallied around him, returning the love and compassion that he spreads to every student. When asked how he remains so positive in a world so dim and challenging, he responded bittersweetly, “I had great parents.”

“When asked how he remains so positive in a world so dim and challenging, he responded bittersweetly, ‘I had great parents.’”

After facing continuous issues in regards to their disabilities, Kaitlyn Snell, a freshman at CNU who utilizes a wheelchair, expressed great gratitude that Dana had her back when she faced mistreatment from a different Regs worker. In Snell’s

experience, Dudley has always been helpful and supportive in regards to her disabilities and the accommodations that are needed for her to comfortably utilize Regattas. Despite being told by many different students countless times that he has impacted their lives so greatly, he continues to find himself bashful at the idea that he could have impacted so many peoples lives for the better. Dudley expressed that he feels as though he has connected or interacted with every student across campus, and it shows. Throughout this interview, several students walked by him and exchanged fistbumps and waves, with some even talking to him the same way as they would with a close friend. Dudley added that he misses every single student that comes through and graduates beyond the halls of CNU, saying he wishes that they would never have to leave.

“Dudley at his core is one of the hearts of the CNU community who provides light and comfort for every student.”

Dana Dudley at his core is one of the hearts of the CNU community who provides light and comfort for every student. He helps advocate for all students, offering care and love to everyone no matter what. It’s no secret that he has touched the lives of nearly every student on campus. It seems as though almost every student has a positive story to share about the shining man who greets them as they enter regattas.

Things you should be carrying in your backpack

Some of us have those days where we end up being on campus for most of the day. During this time, we are unable to run back to our dorm, not even for a minute without running late to our next event. Something that I found helpful for situations like this is to pack important things in your backpack that can get you through the day. Below, I have listed some very important items that you should be carrying in your backpack with you at all times.

1. Tide Pen

Life gets messy and I promise that you will end up spilling that chili on your white shirt. Save yourself the trouble and frustration by simply throwing a Tide Pen in your backpack. A Tide Pen has saved me from so many accidents that I practically have one in every bag of mine. It’s super easy to use and each pen runs for about $3.99 at the store. The amount of uses you get out of this pen is also incredible, as you can probably use this about 20 times before it fully runs out.

2. Cash

I’m one of those individuals that hates keeping their wallet in their backpack. I’m always afraid that someone is going to steal it out of my bag. Instead, I just carry some cash on me. This is always a good idea if you need to buy any snacks or something else while on campus. That way, you’re able to buy what you need but not have to worry about someone taking your entire wallet.

3. Snacks

If you don’t want to be constantly buying overpriced snacks at the vending machines on campus, try throwing in a couple snacks from your backpack. This can be anything from a cereal bar to a bag of popcorn. Not only will this save you money in the long run, but you won’t have to wander around the academic

building in search of a vending machine. You’ll also have snacks right at your disposal when you need them the most. Non-perishable goods are also great to store in your backpack, as they stay fresh for longer periods of time.

4. Body Care Bag

A body care bag is one of the most important necessities for your backpack. These usually contain items such as deodorant, perfume, hairspray, hair ties, makeup wipes, mini makeup, etc. I find my body care bag to be so helpful when I’m on campus for longer periods of time because it helps me freshen up without having to make that painful walk back to my dorm.

5. Bandaids

I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve wobbled around campus due to blisters on my heels or when I would get a paper cut that wouldn’t stop bleeding. Bandaids are so important to have on you at all times because you never know what could happen while you are out. It’s also incredibly frustrating and embarrassing to walk around every front desk asking for a band aid. Throw a couple bandaids in your bag in a secure zipper pocket and you’ll have some no matter what happens.

6. Refillable Water Bottle

If you don’t have one already, I highly recommend having a refillable water bottle on you. Refillable water bottles such as Yeti’s, Stanley’s and Owala’s are amazing at keeping your water cold and are very easy to travel with. Not to mention, filling them up at nearby water fountain stations will be a breeze. This way, you’ll have water with you anywhere you go!

Of course, there are other things that you can pack in your bag as well, but I found these 6 items to be the most important. You pack whatever you feel you need in order to conquer your day!

How can I get better sleep without relying on melatonin gummies?

Trying to go to sleep after a long day can be incredibly difficult, especially if your day was full of stress and setbacks. Many of us, including myself, have turned to melatonin gummies to kick in the Z’s. Sometimes, we don’t want our bodies to have to rely on the gummies to fall asleep, as there are better alternatives to try and induce sleep. Now, I am not an expert. If you have something very important to do the next day that requires you to be fully rested, then I recommend taking the melatonin gummies. Just remember to experiment at your own discretion.

1.

Try a calming bath

One of my favorite things to do when unwinding from a busy day is to take a calming bath. One thing I do recommend if you like to take baths is to go to Target and buy some Dr. Teal’s lavender bath soak. The first time I ever used this soak, I felt calmer. Not to mention, it smells great too. Lavender is known to have sedative properties, therefore making it a perfect well to help you relax.

2. Read

I have learned fairly quickly that reading at night helps calm my brain down. This is a great alternative to scrolling through social media, which can keep you up for hours and hours. When deciding to read a book, make sure it is a relaxing and calming book, preferably not anything horror, true crime, dystopian, etc. I’ve found that reading more calming books has helped me sleep better. However, each person is different.

3. Play calming music

One thing I enjoy doing while getting ready for bed is listening to calming music on my TV. Youtube has a great variety of calming music, as well as pretty backgrounds to display on your TV. This music is very soothing and solemn which

sets the mood for going to sleep.

4. Stay away from screens

Screens emit blue light, which can interfere with the production of melatonin, tricking your brain into thinking that it is still daytime. Now I understand, there is always homework to do at night. There are multiple ways you can go about this problem. First, you can do your homework earlier in the day. However, if you do not have time during the day, wearing blue light protection glasses can help block that blue light. This will help you sleep better at night.

5. Drink herbal tea

I thought that this was a total myth until my mom put me on this. She bought me a bunch of herbal tea and told me to drink some if I had a hard time falling asleep. This honestly did very well help me fall asleep faster and didn’t taste bad at all. One of my favorite teas is from Yogi and it’s specifically for stress relief. Again, this is something you’ll have to experiment with as everyone might not get the same results.

I hope these tips will be helpful when trying to fall asleep faster. Remember that some of these things might not exactly work for you. You’ll have to experiment to find what works best for you. important so make sure you are getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night!

Why I hate grilled cheese sandwiches Please stop using factory cheese

I know some of you have read this title and thought to yourself, “that’s not very human. How can you hate a grilled cheese sandwich?” The answer to this is simple. It’s not that I hate a grilled cheese sandwich per se, but rather that I don’t like American cheese. This feeling started when I was in

Kindergarten. I loved sitting next to my friends at lunch, but dear god. I could not handle the smell of that school lunch mac-and-cheese. The smell of burning plastic filled my nose and I thought I was going to throw up. Ever since then, I’ve never eaten ANYTHING made from American cheese, which

meant that I lived my entire childhood without seeing a Velveeta cup. Growing up, I tried to branch out and eat things with American cheese, but it always ended up with me throwing up. Everytime I would visit a friend or relative’s house, they would make grilled cheese with American cheese slices. I would sit there and shake my head. Out of hundreds of cheese selections, why did we have to choose the most artificial one? I was the one who just ate bread with peanut butter and jelly on it instead.

This leads me to my thoughts on a grilled cheese sandwich. I think that the idea of a grilled cheese itself is mouth watering. I love a sandwich with pepper jack or provolone cheese. However, I cannot imagine why people would put this specific cheese into their body. Even at 21 years old, I’m still staying away from anything with American cheese. Little me would be so proud. Honestly, what is it with this cheese? Is there a smell or taste that I’m not getting from it? According to tasteofhome.com, American cheese isn’t technically real

cheese. The Food and Drug Administration classifies it as “pasteurized process cheese food,” which means it contains less than 51% real cheese.” So, why are we eating fake cheese? They couldn’t even make it smell or taste like real cheese to begin with.

Overall, American cheese will never be a favorite of mine. It’s just so gross and tastes like rotting plastic. If you like American cheese, it may be time to get your taste buds checked out, because I think they are broken. In my 21 years of life, I am totally okay with the fact that I will forever be a pepper jack and provolone girly.

Is Taylor Swift Ruining the NFL?

Staff writers explains why not

No. The brief answer is no she isn’t. With Super Bowl LIX approaching and the Kansas City Chiefs playing in it, the argument of “Is Taylor Swift ruining the National Football League (NFL)” has reappeared in the media. Considering Swift appears to be there to support her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce, there is little room for speculation that she is directly ruining the NFL.

Even as a Taylor Swift fan, there is confusion around her screen time during Chiefs games. However, I cannot help but be confused about why this is a “Taylor Swift” issue when it appears she is simply supporting her boyfriend.

Who we should be targeting isn’t the famous girlfriend, but rather the NFL for utilizing her presence for monetary gain and an increase in viewership.

A Christopher Newport University student that wished to remain anonymous noted that “her highlights during a game [have shown] core NFL fans that the network’s runtime priorities do not align with the audience anymore.” While I do not agree with the popular belief that Swift is ruining the NFL, I can agree that the NFL is not helping the situation by allowing their public relations team and cameramen to profit off of a person who has nothing to do with ath-

letics aside from a football-player boyfriend.

Furthermore, while I believe the NFL could relax with Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce coverage, there has been a benefit of an uptick in viewership that has aided in allowing more partnerships and has financially benefited the NFL.

My overall opinion of the matter is to just let people have fun! She’s an entertainer… People will be entertained by her presence and find joy in seeing her there. Others will feel differently. There are more pressing matters in this world to hyper-fixate on besides a pop star’s relationship with a football player.

“We should be targeting...the NFL for utilizing her presence for monetary gain and an increase in viewership.”

Former President Joe Biden warned of the United States turning into the direction of an oligarchy in his farewell address on Jan. 15, 2025. Social media immediately took to the internet out of concern. Millions of Americans, including myself, thought the warnings were unsettling and dystopian.

President Donald Trump took the oath of office just five days later on Jan. 20, 2025, being sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. As tradition for presidential inaugurations, former presidents lined the stage with Trump and his family.

Something that left plenty of Americans scratching their heads was the billionaires in the stage party. Billionaires such as Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk were present during the inauguration. Millions of Americans then began putting more belief into the former president’s warnings.

Before we can answer the big question of whether the United States is becoming an oligarchy, we need to solidify what an oligarchy is and is not. Associated Press defines an oligarchy as “an elite few

who control the government’s actions.” An oligarchy will not take authoritarian control of the United States. However, Americans worry that our democracy will be threatened by billionaires who have no concern for the average American and no awareness of what actually happens in American households.

Elon Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy have been promised by President Trump to lead a new government agency called the Department of Government Efficiency. Americans have questioned the motive the current president has behind appointing a billionaire with virtually no government experience into a position to measure government efficiency. It would be very difficult to determine right now if the United States is becoming an oligarchic state, although the current president’s inauguration did not quite deter the concerns of millions of American citizens.
