During Bone Marrow Stem Cell Donation and Leukaemia, Awareness Months which spans 15 August to 15 October, The Sunflower Fund has one simple message for every South African, hope begins with you! Now is the time to be amazing, be awesome and be extraordinary. Approximately every 3 minutes, someone in the world is diagnosed with a type of life-threatening blood disorder and approximately every 9 minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. Our vision is that no-one should die because there is no match. There are 3 main types of blood cancers: Leukaemia, cancer that is found in your blood and bone marrow; Lymphoma, blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system; and Myeloma, blood cancer that specifically targets your plasma cells. Leukaemia is the 10th most frequently occurring type of cancer in all races or ethnicities. These dreaded diseases affect people all over the world, regardless of background, location, ethnicity, age or wealth. Stem cell transplants are often a life-saving treatment option forpatients diagnosed with these blood orders yet most people do not understand how exactly they can bring hope. “There is so much misconception about blood stem cell donation”, says Alana James, CEO of The Sunflower Fund. The best match for a stem cell transplant would be a match betweensiblings; however, many are not that lucky and have to search elsewhere. Statistics currently indicate that the chance of finding a donor is 1 in 100 000. “The reality is, a match is more likely to occur between people of the same ethnic background, so having donors from a more representative cross-section of society is more likely to serve the diversity of needs in South Africa”, James added. TV Talk Show Host, Faizal Sayed, is an Ambassador of Hope for The Sunflower Fund and added that the support of the community is crucial in an effort to save lives.
The Sunflower Fund
It’s the ordinary, everyday people who do the most extraordinary things that make a real difference. Meet FAIZAL SAYED – TV Talk Show Host and The Sunflower Fund Ambassador of Hope. Give the hope of life to patients suffering from blood disorders like Leukaemia and help us celebrate SUNFLOWER DAY on Friday 15 September 2017.

Gentrification, by definition, means to improve a "run-down" area so that it conforms to middle class taste. Its evident that gentrification is sweeping across the Western Cape, displacing some while giving others opportunities they've never had, and in either case replacing these people with the more wealthy. The change in infrastructure, as well as the social and economic characteristics that come with gentrification have crept up on several affected areas including Bo-kaap, Saltriver and Woodstock - all areas that in recent decades have, for the most part, been inhabited predominantly by working class people previously affected by apartheid's forced removals. Now, over 20 years after the end of apartheid, and just as inhabitants of gentrifying areas began experiencing the benefits of the upliftment of their neighbourhoods, many families find themselves struggling to afford the sharply increasing rent or rates on homes which they (or even their parents and grandparents) have lived in for decades. Upgraded parks and shopping facilities in Saltriver seemed an exciting prospect for the community fighting off drugs and gangsterism, but their dreams were shattered when the upgraded facilities meant they had to pay more rent and rates. This has forced several families to concede their homes to wealthier families who are able to afford it. As these families are forced to leave, these traditionally close-knit communities are being eroded. This is the harsh reality of living in a capitalist society. We've heard the stories: a Bo-Kaap family who owns their house, but is unable to pay rates, is left vulnerable to promises of large sums of money for their property, either from wealthy individuals or businesses - this is the only opportunity they will have to earn so much money - they are lured away from their comfortable lives with the promise of money they would never earn from their current jobs. Residents in Woodstock who can no longer afford their rent are evicted by landowners who continue increasing the rent as property values in the area increase.
Salt River residents are issued with eviction notices by the Sherrif as an anonymous company has purchased the building in which they live. While one can argue that those who own property in these areas should preserve many years of rich cultural history by not selling homes, the sad truth is that the current economy has stretched the pockets of South Africans. The rising cost of food, petrol and other basic necessities puts the immediate need for financial stability above retaining culture. As families are forced, or choose for a lack of better options to move, these displaced people now find themselves in areas such as Blikkiesdorp, further away from the CBD (and generally further away job opportunities as well). The impact on lives is catastrophic. The invisible hand of gentrification has torn families and communities apart, moving people away from their stable jobs and forcing children to move to schools with lower standards of education. All the while, investment and upliftment of these areas continues - businesses flourish and, especially in Salt River and Woodstock, the newly-moved in residents who replace the displaced residents - 'gentrifiers', who often can't afford to live in the traditionally wealthy areas of Cape Town, have the opportunity to live in these more 'up-market' areas than they otherwise would have. Gentrification has cast a shadow over the Western Cape, shifting the landscape demographics in a major way. Areas rich in culture, such as Bo-kaap which is known for being a vibrant community, are being eroded by the wealthy throwing their money. The history and culture of these areas is being lost as its inhabitants are displaced. Yes, areas are being uplifted, but not for those that lived there before - rather for those who only choose to, and who can afford to, live there after its been gentrified. The reality is especially painful in the South African context, and the context of the communities who stayed in these areas before they were gentrified - the criteria to live in an area is no longer decided by the color of ones skin but the amount of money you have in your account. It comes at the cost of culture putting an eraser to the heritage of millions.

Business Directory BUSINESS TIPS 1. Analyze the performance of your sales team. If they aren’t meeting your expectations, or they are showing signs of ambivalence, shake things up. Bring in new blood working on commission only. 2. Write down everything you do and categorize these tasks. Find tasks that you can delegate to others or outsource. 3. Re-examine purchasing and see if you can improve the deals you are getting from your vendors. 4. Improve your accounts receivable ratio. 5. Look at repetitive tasks you and your team perform. Do they all have procedures written for them? See how they can be accomplished more quickly and be sure you have procedures that capture the most productive ways of accomplishing repetitive tasks. Be sure that you allow these procedures to be improved on over time; don’t fall victim to the “We’ve never done it like that here” mentality. 6. Audit your small business listings on the Internet. See if there are any places where you should be listed but aren’t. Be sure listings are accurate. Check your Google reviews. Encourage customers to review your business on Google. 7. Launch a customer referral program. Reward existing customers for bringing you new business. 8. Launch a customer loyalty program. 9. Research your local competitors and similar businesses in other areas. Find out if any owners may be approaching retirement age or there are other reasons they might want to sell. Talk to mutual suppliers to see if any might be in financial trouble. 10. Survey your customers and find out what other products or services they need. 11. See if there are any of your suppliers that might be ripe for a buyout. 12. Talk to city and regional planners to discover the areas that are slated for new development. Should you prepare to expand to any of these areas, or perhaps relocate to a bigger facility? 13. Talk to real estate professionals to find neighborhoods in transition. For example, if a low-income area is beginning to be “gentrified,” it often means that young families with children will soon become the prominent demographic. Also, check out aging neighborhoods, they can “turn over” to younger, affluent families.
