Rack of Lamb with Dates & Moroccan Spices Ingredients ¼ cup Medjool date puree (alternatively, 1 cup pitted and chopped Medjool dates) 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 ¼ pound rack of lamb 2 tablespoons onion, minced 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, minced 1 clove garlic, crushed and chopped ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste ¼ teaspoon turmeric ½ teaspoon ground cumin 1 cinnamon stick 1 teaspoon cardamom pods A pinch of saffron in 1 cup water Ingredients for the Date Puree (optional) 25 Medjool dates

Instructions If preparing your own date puree, do this ahead of time as it must go into the pan as the lamb is searing in a pan over the stove top. To make your own date puree, remove the pit from the dates and add them to a pan of boiling water that covers the dates completely. Let boil on medium-high heat for 40 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened and you see only about 1-2 tablespoons of liquid at the bottom of the pan. Use a food mill to completely grind the skins into the mixture. Set aside or chill until ready to use. Lasts about 7-10 days in the refrigerator. To prepare the lamb, preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Make sure the lamb is completely dry of any liquids before cooking. Gently heat the olive oil in a large oven-safe saute pan. Add the rack of lamb, fat side down and increase the heat to medium-high. Sear the meat on one side until it has browned, about 3-4 minutes. Turn the meat over and repeat. Once it has browned on the other side, add the onion, ginger and garlic to the pan. Use a wooden spoon to move the ingredients around so they don’t burn. Add the salt and spices to the pan, too. To a cup of warm water, add the saffron. The water should quickly turn to a golden yellow color. Add this liquid with the saffron threads to the pan. Give the pan a whirl to make sure all the ingredients are evenly spread out. Cover and place the pan in the heated oven. Roast for 40 minutes, removing the cover for the last 5-7 minutes. Once finished, remove the pan from the heat and cover again for 10 minutes before cutting so that it retains all of its juices. To serve, cut each piece vertically from each of the bones in the rack.

Depression Global depression numbers surge in past decade according to the World Health Organisation

GENEVA: Cases of depression have ballooned almost 20 percent in a decade, making the debilitating disorder linked to suicide the leading cause of disability worldwide, the World Health Organization said. By 2015, the number of people globally living with depression, according to a revised definition, had reached 322 million, up 18.4 percent since 2005, the UN agency said. “These new figures are a wake-up call for all countries to rethink their approaches to mental health and to treat it with the urgency that it deserves,” WHO chief Margaret Chan said in a statement. According to the agency’s definition, depression is more than just a bout of the blues. It is a “persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that people normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities for two weeks or more.” Lack of energy, shifts in appetite or sleep patterns, substance abuse, anxiety, feelings of worthlessness and thoughts of self-harm or suicide are also common, and can wreak havoc on entire families. The drop in productivity, and other medical conditions often linked to depression, also takes a financial toll, with the global cost estimated at $1 trillion annually, the WHO said. Shekhar Saxena, head of the agency’s mental health and substance abuse department, said Thursday that both psycho-social and medical treatments could be highly effective, insisting on the importance of reaching more of those in need. Even in the most developed countries, around half of people suffering from depression are not diagnosed or treated, and the percentage soars to between 80 and 90 percent in less developed nations. Treatment can be difficult to access, while a fear of stigma also prevents many people from seeking the help required to live healthy and productive lives, the agency said. According to the WHO, every dollar invested in improving access to treatment leads to a return of $4 in better health and productivity. And “early identification and treatment of depression is a very effective means of decreasing death by suicide,” Saxena told reporters. About 800,000 people commit suicide worldwide every year, amounting to one suicide every four seconds. And the link to depression is clear. Saxena pointed to studies showing that 70 to 80 percent of people who commit suicide in high-income countries, and around half of those who kill themselves in low-income countries, suffer from mental disorders, of which depression is the most common.

REAL ESTATE MADE EASY – PROPERTY EXPERT ADVICE Selling your house can be extremely stressful. We Sell properties daily! Are you thinking of Buying or Selling your property? Below are some guidelines on how to best achieve these goals. First things first: 1 – Know your financial affordability. Before going out into the buyers’ market to hunt for your dream house, get yourself pre-qualified either through your personal bank directly or a mortgage bond originator. A pre-qualified home loan includes a credit check, a monthly Income & Expenses analysis (i.e. Salary less your current debt and living expenses) in order to ascertain your affordability. Ultimately, your affordability will dictate the type of house and area that you would be able to afford to buy in. 2 – Save towards a Cash Deposit. If you can, save towards a cash deposit, even if you are a first time home buyer. If you have a cash deposit to put down, the Banks generally take this into account and your affordability score should increase, your monthly repayment instalments be lowered and the interest rate possibly be reduced. Banks see this as a serious commitment and a shared investment risk taken. If you can’t, most banks still allow applicants 100% mortgage loans, depending on your financial situation and credit scoring. 3 – Save towards the Transfer Costs. ALL property purchases come with Transfer and Register Costs. As a general rule, this amount should be about 8% of the property purchase price and is payable in cash prior to transfer date. The Transfer costs includes Attorney fees, bond registration costs, transfer duty (IF applicable), etc. I am proud to be your local property specialist. By being a local, I know the local property market and people – the facts, the figures and the trends. So, if you are Selling your property, I have the resources to be able to get you the highest possible price for your property in the shortest amount of time. Let’s Chat!

The TV Talk Show that gets you talking...

A TV Host’s insight INTO THE “TOUGH” EPISODES THIS SEASON

Faizal Sayed @FaizalTV FaizalTV www.Faizalsayed.com Channel 1 52

All Rights Reserved Worldwide - The Faizal Sayed Show

As I enter venues where events are about to occur or simply walk out of the office to my vehicle, viewers who talk about the people I had as guest on my show or about the subjects that were discussed always greet me, thus stopping for a quick acquaintance. Chatting to people on the road about what they have seen on the show releases a part of me which is able to have an ‘on the ground’ view of the topic or gain further insight into public perception. Gaining public perception in my view draws an analogy at most in my mind. It is like a medical doctor using stethoscope to hear the murmur of the heart. Likewise, listening to what your audience has to say is in effect listening to the heartbeat of your audience. Once this is understood, only then can the appropriate action be taken. Indeed it is about taking the opportune action when dealing with anything in the public arena.

t

N

As the years passed and the show matured, along with me if I need mention, I have come to terms with the notion with the idea that that which Interest an audience may not interest me and the reverse is of course true without saying. My intrapersonal communication along with my producers, and TV Networks has all agreed on one thing. Audiences have evolved into a very real space and want to see real things that affect them on a social, psychological, economical, political and developmental point of view. When I have Hollywood guest on the show discussing their lives, audience response rates are low. Have we surpassed the fickleness of delving into the lives of celebrities? Perhaps they all have the same dramatically charged life stories. The rise to stardom from the streets of New York or Harlem. Oh well, I have had that on the show a number of times. On the flip side, when I have ordinary guest, with real life occurrences, awe-inspiring motivations coupled with tearful moments, audiences seem to respond on unprecedented levels. So there it was. That was the content formula’s defining moment. Over the next couple of months, I will speak to you through this column, in the Cape Issue Magazine, about people and issues that define our lives as they have appeared on the show. Tell the real life journeys of people who have a message. Messages of heartache, inspiration and motivation that will hold you riveted to your chair. You will laugh and cry with us and learn life lessons through the very paths treaded by the guest on my show as we seek to unfold the dynamics of our very existence. There are episodes that delve into investigative matters rooting out events of crime in an effort to avert an increase in the incident rate. These episodes seek to inform the public of the scams and the augmentation of scams and believe me; they can get a bit heated. Then there is another side or rather edge to this coin. Call it blunt, direct or whatever you like. Just depends on the subject but by now you might have come to realise that Faizal Sayed and The Faizal Sayed Show has a “say it as it is policy”. I don’t believe in euphemistic approaches on TV. I’m not there to water down the issues. My job is to root it out, explode the volcano and allow new mountains to develop thereby stabilizing the matter at hand on firmer ground. It is about change and being a catalyst to that change on any level and any subject matter that in effect benefits and empowers your audience into better living. Why else would we do what we do? The days of looking dressed up on TV, articulating in false dialects are over in my view. Be who you are is what I say to myself and allow your guest to be who they are. That’s real. Not FAKE NEWS as US President Donald Trump would have it. Well, that’s it for today. Remember in the next editions, I will single out discussions as they appear on the show and discuss those issues with you here in the Cape Issue Magazine. Go well, until next time. Faizal Sayed TV Talk Show Host of The Faizal Sayed Show. Weekdays on Deen TV at 20:00 CAT. Channel 152 Openview HD, 365 StarSat and 365 Star Times throughout Africa. MUSLIM MMA FIGHTERS

BALANCE SPORT AND SPIRITUALITY DURING RAMADAN Sacrifice is a word often used by mixed martial artists to describe their journey towards professional success and athletic dominance, as they forgo society’s status quo to escape the mundane existence of ordinary life. Fighters experience the elated highs of victory, but with the glory comes a price; they sacrifice family, relationships, and comfort, all in pursuit of grand dreams of having their hands triumphantly raised. Temperance, of course, is nothing new in the world of MMA, but for a select group of athletes, Muslim fighters, the practice of sacrifice takes on new meaning during the month of Ramadan, the holiest period in the Islamic calendar, when devout followers abstain from food, drink, and sex from sunrise to sundown. And for bantamweight Irshaad Sayed, a native South African who fights out of Singapore’s Evolve MMA camp, the rituals of Ramadan supersede any of the rewards mixed martial arts can provide. “My religion comes first… MMA, work, and everything else follows,” explains Sayed, who currently competes for the EFC World Wide promotion. “The purpose of Ramadan is to make us aware of how blessed we are to have what we have. The hunger and thirst makes us conscious of what others less fortunate than ourselves may experience on a daily basis.” Sayed, 28, is a bit of an adrenaline junkie. A decorated Muay Thai champion and China’s inaugural 135-pound titleholder under the RUFF banner, Sayed jumps out of planes, conquers gnarly terrain on ATVs and jet skis, and catches some mean air on both snow and wakeboards when he’s not knocking dudes out or sinking in suffocating chokes. But during Ramadan, all of his focus centers on his faith. Waking daily before sunrise to partake in the first of five daily prayer sessions, Sayed re-prioritizes his life during Ramadan, limiting training sessions to once per day, to account for the decreased energy he experiences due to fasting. He also refrains from competition, which has puzzled promoters in the past, many unable to understand why a professional fighter would pass on any opportunity to showcase their skills. “Others would think it's hurting my career, but I see it as a positive,” offers Sayed. “I'm giving my body 30 days to heal and cleanse itself while I grow on a spiritual level.” Non-Muslims may have difficulty comprehending Sayed’s decision to choose faith over fortune, but the sacrifices of Islamic MMA athletes recently gained further exposure, when undefeated UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov passed on a lucrative chance to headline a UFC card on account of his strict adherence to Ramadan.

Like Sayed, Nurmagomedov is a staunch Muslim, who did not hesitate to place his religious beliefs above professional accolades. And while a hypothetical victory would have put Nurmagomedov in title contention, his absence from the event has been met with respect from his peers, namely Sayed. “He has his priorities in order,” comments Sayed. “It's nice to see guys right at the top still remembering what is important to them, even though there must have been great pressure on him.” Dealing with pressure is nothing new to Sayed, who left his home in Cape Town at age 17 to take up with kickboxing greats in Thailand. And after claiming several national, continental, and world Muay Thai titles, he transitioned into MMA on the strength of his crisp and smooth boxing and improving ground game. But temptation remained ever-present in Sayed’s life, the wayward vices of Southeast Asia: booze, drugs, prostitution; thrust constantly in his face. It was during this time that Sayed not only discovered the phenomenal strength of spirituality, but also learned the value of civic responsibility and philanthropy. “My religious background kept me on the correct path,” adds Sayed, who, in 2013, donated roughly $10,000-dollars to build a school for the children of underprivileged villagers in rural Yunnan, China. “There was a religious influence in my decision … it’s always a great feeling to help out those in a less fortunate position than ourselves.” Now on the eve of Ramadan, Sayed is preparing for his next spiritual offering to Allah. In addition to his five daily prayers and month-long fast (which he is allowed to break daily at sundown), he devotes large stretches of Ramadan to attending Mosque and reading from the Quran. He also partakes in an i’tikaf for the final ten nights of the holy month, sleeping at the Mosque for Laylat al Qadr, or night of destiny, a remembrance of when of the first verses of the Quran were revealed to Muhammad. For Muslims to participate in i’tikaf, the religion requires adherence to four basic tenants, namely that they must have true faith, they must seek closeness to Allah, they must remain inside their Mosque for the duration of the ritual, and they must posses mental stability, fortitude, and intelligence. And it is in this final attribute that Sayed has found a divine connection between the mosque and the ring. “The life of a professional athlete fits pretty well with the life of a practicing Muslim. Islam… promotes a healthy lifestyle,” states Sayed. “A huge part of fighting is mental, and my religion gives me the mental and spiritual strength I need when I enter the cage.” Written by: Dan Shapiro
