Prepare for Winter! Buy your Firewood NOW!

JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Welcome to the September 2016 edition of The Journal! We hope that you all had a fantastic summer and are now getting ready for the cooler autumn months when being outside after 10am doesn’t feel like being inside a blast furnace! Along with the cooler days, come cooler nights, and now is the time of year to start preparing for the winter ahead. Each year a large number of people use log burners as a means of heating their homes during the short winters that we are fortunate enough to enjoy. While log burners are petty to look at and provide heat, many people forget the importance of having their chimney swept on a yearly basis. Failure to do so is the leading cause of chimney fires which are not only dangerous but costly to repair. For peace of mind get your chimney swept properly by calling Tony the Chimney Sweep on 646 438 694. Also if you own a log burner you will need a good supply of quality firewood to keep your home nice and cosy. You can prepare yourself for the winter by purchasing your firewood now. See the advert later on in the magazine for “Logs El Pareton” who have been serving our area for years and provide quality logs at a great price. Now that the summer is over, we can see Christmas just over the hill and approaching at a rapid pace! Now is the time to think about paying for the excesses of the summer and getting in shape for the festive season! Our good friends at MOVE Gym in Totana will be having a free open day on the 22nd of September. This is a chance to go and enjoy all the state of the art facilities including spa and steam room for the day, FREE OF CHARGE! More details later in the magazine! We hope you enjoy reading this month’s magazine as much as we have enjoyed making it for you! From everyone at The Journal, have a great September and we will see you next month! Regards, Robbie Rutherford Proud to be a climate neutral publication

Spain to have Christmas Day Elections

That’s the question Spaniards are asking after caretaker prime minister Mariano Rajoy agreed to face a confidence vote in parliament at the end of August. The result of that ballot will hinge on whether Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez Castejon sticks to his pledge to oppose Mr Rajoy. If he does, Spain’s electoral calendar means the country’s third election in a year would probably fall on December 25. “Let’s see if @sanchezcastejon has the guts to send 36 million Spaniards out to repeat elections on Christmas Day,” Xavier Garcia Albiol, leader of Rajoy’s People’s Party in Catalonia, said in a tweet after the confidence vote was called. Rajoy is trying to win a mandate from lawmakers after sealing a pact with the liberals of Ciudadanos to support his bid to end eight months of political deadlock. He’s still short of votes though, and needs at least some Socialist lawmakers to abstain if he’s going to finally claim a second term after inconclusive elections in December and June.If he fails, parliament will be dissolved two months after the August 30 confidence vote. Under Spanish law, there has to be a period of 54 days before the election. Spanish ballots are traditionally held on a Sunday, making December 25 the most

likely date. “This certainly looks like part of the PP’s strategy to get the Socialists to abstain,” said Antonio Barroso, a political analyst at Teneo Intelligence in London. “It’s starting to get crazy now.” The Socialists are trying to force Rajoy to step aside in favour of someone else from his party. They say the caretaker prime minister’s ties to a PP corruption scandal make him unfit to govern. Rajoy denies any wrongdoing. “We want a clean and just government and that is not the government of Rajoy,” Mr Sanchez said in an August 17 tweet. “That’s why we will vote: NO.” Rajoy, for his part, says there’s no way he’s stepping aside. He says that if Mr Sanchez maintains his veto, then Spaniards will be forced to vote again. The premier says the political stalemate is jeopardising the country’s economic recovery and stalling efforts to tackle unemployment, while the European Union is demanding further cuts to stabilise the public finances. Spain is due to send its 2017 budget to Brussels by the middle of October. “I’m optimistic,” PP Deputy Secretary General Pablo Casado said in a radio interview. “The Socialists are not going to allow a third election in a year, which Sanchez would end up being held responsible for.”

Spain’s Beach Umbrella Wars

Every day, as dawn breaks, a silent battle commences on Spain’s busiest beaches: securing a spot as close as to the water possible. Starting at 7am, hundreds of people stake their claims in the sand with umbrellas – and sometimes chairs, tables and coolers too – before heading out to enjoy the water. Sometimes, they don’t return for hours. More and more complaints from residents and vacationers alike have led authorities of coastal Mediterranean communities to declare war on this “spot savingâ€? by passing new ordinances or enforcing existing ones. “We’ve decided to go one step further and have local police remove these objects, which are turning a public space into a private space in the earliest hours of the morning,â€? says councilman JosĂŠ Manuel Prieto of Gandia in Valencia, the latest city where these regulations have been set into motion. The measure has been well received by the majority of vacationers, according to Prieto and confirmed by various residents. “I take a walk here every

morning, and I see a lot of older people coming and basically setting up fences, all at the very front by the water. And I don’t think it’s right, says Carlos Peiró.

set an example, which is exactly what we wanted, but we couldn’t achieve it just with a month of giving the people information, the councilman reports.

Eusebio SĂĄnchez, who is 73, sees the logic in the prohibition even though he admits that he too has often left an umbrella speared in the sand to reserve his family the closest spot to the water. The vacationer, who comes from Toledo every summer, adds: “If the city council is doing it so the machines that smooth out the sand don’t run into issues with umbrellas, I’ll be the first to jump on board. However, if they’re doing it so they can collect fines and make more money, I don’t think that’s reasonable.â€?

Since the new rule came into effect last month, the number of umbrellas and shades set up early in the morning has diminished, and the ones that do appear on the beaches aren’t abandoned, instead left with someone standing guard nearby. But combating this phenomenon isn’t easy. In Torrox, a beach town in Målaga, where the umbrella sanctions Continued on page 11

In Gandia, a town whose population grows from 75,000 in the winter to 300,000 in the summer, the mere announcement has led to the overnight disappearance of the umbrellas – at least for now. Vacationers have complied with the rule change even before authorities have had to remove any umbrellas or issue any fines, which can run as high as â‚Ź720. “The spreading news of the ordinance has

have been in effect for two summers now, and where the recovery of umbrellas removed from the beach costs €30, simple deterrence hasn’t been enough. According to a local police spokesperson, “not everyone agrees. The last time we enforced the rule, there were people yelling insults at police from the balconies.” The neighbouring town of Algarrobo and Granada’s Almuñécar have followed in Torrox’s footsteps. The deterrence measures haven’t been in place for very long in Torrevieja (Alicante), which last year removed the first umbrella and gave its owner a €150 fine. “It worked for a while. But this summer they’ve filled the beaches again,” says the mayor, José Manuel Dolón. The councilman admits that they haven’t taken action yet, out of fear that it would mean declaring war on the packed beaches. “We will, though. It’s unacceptable to claim public space like this.” According to sources from various regions, the people who use the umbrellas to stake out their territory at the break of dawn tend to be older, mostly men, who come on family

trips every summer to the same tourist destination, often to the same part of the beach. This problem doesn’t exist in Mallorca, where the hotels have a stronger presence and tourists “use more rental umbrellas and sun loungers,” says the city council. Salou in Tarragona, where beach cleaning starts at 5am, also doesn’t face the issue. “At that time, the machines don’t run into umbrellas. And up to now we haven’t thought it necessary to regulate them,” says a spokesperson. The measures to tackle this practice are spreading rapidly, on the other hand, along the Valencian coast. Sagunto has begun to regulate unattended umbrellas. Alicante and Benidorm prohibit placing them before 8am,

as does Cullera, a tourist apartment destination in Valencia. The Cullera councilman who oversees the beaches, Salvador Tortajada, describes his daily struggle: “Once the machines finish cleaning, there’s a race to see who can grab the first spot. Some groups are organized so that one person guards everyone else’s things. There are also those people who mark out their plot of sand with the umbrella pole.”

A HISTORIC REFERENDUM On Thursday June 23, the people of Britain voted for a British exit, or Brexit, from the European Union in a historic referendum. This decision has prompted jubilant celebration whilst sending shockwaves through the global economy. Over the next two years or so, Britain will negotiate its exit under article 50 of the Treaty on European Union. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER BRITAIN EXITS THE EU Through the withdrawal negotiations, nothing will change for British expats in Spain because the UK will remain part of the EU during this transitional period. However, what happens after Britain has left the EU and how this may affect you is still unclear. LEGAL ASSISTANCE SERVICE Whilst many questions remain unanswered, Línea Directa would like to remind all its customers that its Legal Assistance service comes as standard in all their insurance policies. If you have a query you can call one of our lawyers. They offer information and advice on a wide range of matters such as taxes, purchase and rental of property, inheritance, family etc. As the Brexit negotiations evolve, our legal team will keep abreast of all the latest developments relating to events occurring in the Spanish territory and those to which Spanish legislation is applicable. 24-HOUR ASSISTANCE FOR EMERGENCY LEGAL CONSULTATIONS Should you require an immediate legal consultation, which due to the gravity of the matter in hand cannot wait, we offer a 24-hour legal advice service. Regardless of the time of day, we can provide immediate specialist legal advice for emergency incidents relating to you, your family or your home. IN ENGLISH The service is entirely in English. From the drafting and revision of legal documents to negotiations with third parties and or opposing parties. We can’t provide all the answers to the questions raised by the Britain’s exit of the EU, but we can provide sound legal advice for our expatriate customers living in Spain. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Línea Directa please call 902 123 161 More information on Línea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

Brexit News

Continuing her tour of European capitals, new British PM Theresa May delivered press conferences in Bratislava and Warsaw. Her trip across the continent has continued to stir the immigration debate pot. Former European partners want to be strict with European Economic Area (EEA) membership, bringing the UK back into the freedom of movement with no means to mitigate it. The new cabinet will have to deal with the popular public opinion that the UK demands a significant decrease in immigration. This is understandable, but there are people stuck in the middle. EU citizens living in the UK, and UK citizens across Europe, are existing in a post-Brexit limbo. May has refused to comment on the futures of EU citizens in the UK, giving no guarantee that they will be welcome to stay. However, a cross-party group of MPs have passed a motion to oppose this, and the pressure from politicians in the UK and Europe will likely prove too great. Inevitably there is a possibility that the deportation of longstanding EU citizens from the UK will be met by a similar backlash against British expats in EU countries. Whatever happens in regards to citizens leaving, the biggest impact will be on those coming to stay. Thanks to the ease of hiring low-skilled EU workers, the current British visa scheme has no structure for accepting non-EU citizens for jobs with a salary lower than £25,000 or below £35,000 for skilled workers with experience. The British visa system has always needed change, with entrepreneur visas earmarked for special treatment. On the whole, graduate entrepreneur visas have been largely successful. However, fewer than 12% of the 13,746 Tier 1 Entrepreneur visas granted since 2008 have culminated in successful companies. Many have suggested there is scope for a special London visa to help ease the burden on one of the world’s financial powerhouses. But, the effect on the rest of the country could be catastrophic. Others have suggested the introduction of ‘angel investor’ visas. These would allow wealthy investors to financially back an immigrant’s idea or business. Visas aside, there are many suggestions being touted in regards to the UK’s future. Australia is a country keen to discuss conciliatory trade deals. However, the problems that UK

businesses and residents will face have yet to come to a head and it remains to be seen the extent of what they will be dealing with. Both the UK and the EU essentially want to save face, securing the best deal to present to the public while retaining as many advantages of the Union as possible. Despite the nationalist bluster, the UK still remains an important economic figure and trading hub. All things considered, the preservation of the EEA and its accompanying immigration policies looks a distinct possibility.

Mercers Brexit Statement

The vote has been cast and the UK will be leaving the EU. This throws up a number of questions that we have been asked and I will answer them using historical fact rather than simply my opinion. I started as a Spanish Estate Agent in 1983 and to be honest from the buyer or seller perspective not a great deal has changed in the past 33 years. Yes, Spain joined the single currency in the year 2000 but were there any fundamental changes when they joined? Prior to Spain joining the EU, British property buyers had no restrictions with regards to purchasing property, whether for holiday or retirement use. My own Father retired to Spain in 1985 after a career at BP Chemicals. His is a good example of how easy it was to move to Spain, prior to the country joining the EU. My Father bought his first property from me in 1985 and spent the last 28 years of his life in content retirement in Spain. When he first moved to Spain the only real restriction placed on “non-residents” was a limit of 90 days stay in Spain, before they had to leave. This meant many non-residents would simply drive over the border to France, have their passport stamped and start the next 90 day period. This gradually changed as Spain become more democratic. Don’t forget Franco, the dictator had only been dead some 8 years. If you wanted to remain in Spain on a permanent basis, you needed to become a resident. This was a relatively simple process and meant that you could come and go as you pleased. You also had a responsibility to declare and pay taxes in Spain (as you do now), which actually were more favourable than the UK. To become resident, you needed to demonstrate that you would not be a burden on the state and could support yourself financially. A state pension was sufficient proof on income for pensioners

and for those wanting to work, it was relatively easy to obtain a work permit or to set up a company.

regardless of what our politicians do, is guaranteed to put a smile on our faces and allow us to BBQ in December.

Spain and the UK had a reciprocal healthcare agreement for pensioners, so UK citizens who had retired and were resident in Spain had access to free and excellent (still is) health care.

As the locals say – Viva Espana! Come and join us in the warmest, friendliest most welcoming country in Europe and enjoy 320 days of glorious, year round sunshine.

The UK Government had an agreement with the Bank of Spain to transfer pensions to Spain at favourable exchange rates.

Chris Mercer MNAEA

So what changed when Spain joined the EU or the single currency? The answer is surprisingly, very little apart from Spain adopting the Euro as their currency. What do I think will happen over the next few years? I do not think or believe that the UK leaving the EU will have an immediate, medium or long term adverse effect on UK citizens wanting to live, work or indeed die in Spain. Our input into the economy runs into the Billions and many areas of Spain have seen a dramatic and positive resurgence in their economic status, thanks mainly to this influx of Northern European buyers. Spain has always been a warm and friendly country, the culture is very Southern Mediterranean and we like this and they (unlike some European countries) like us! What draws most of us to this wonderful country is the weather and that,

Post-Brexit UK should drop Gibraltar

With thousands commuting from Gibraltar to Spain every day, GarcíaMargallo y Marfil says Britain should cede the territory.

Spain’s Foreign Minister José GarcíaMargallo y Marfil proposed shared sovereignty of Gibraltar, to be followed by its “restitution” to Spain, after the British territory voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU while the U.K. overall voted to leave. “Our formula … is British-Spanish cosovereignty for a determined period of time, which after that time has elapsed, will head towards the restitution of Gibraltar to Spanish sovereignty,” GarcíaMargallo said. Gibraltar, a former Spanish territory which was ceded to Britain in 1713, heavily relies on Spain for its economy, with over 12,000 people commuting across the border every day. “It is now a bilateral issue that will be negotiated exclusively between the U.K. and Spain,” García-Margallo said, AFP reports. The Spanish Foreign Minister added a solution was necessary for Gibraltar to maintain its position in the EU’s single market. Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo called for unity and calm on Twitter. European Commission President JeanClaude Juncker at a press conference following Britain’s

EU referendum vote

Brexit poses an “existential threat” to Gibraltar

Brexit poses an “existential threat” to Gibraltar’s economy, the chief minister of the British territory Fabian Picardo has told the BBC While Britain’s full departure from the EU, including from the union’s single market, could be a “disastrous exit for the United Kingdom, [it] would be an existential threat” for the service-based economy of Gibraltar, Picardo said. A deal needs to be struck to keep the territory in the single market despite U.K. divorce from the EU, he added. The chief minister of the Mediterranean outpost of 32,000 inhabitants said on the BBC’s Today program that Britain’s so-called hard exit would “mean a complete exit from the single market, no arrangements for freedom of movement.” Gibraltar’s residents voted overwhelmingly to stay in the EU at the June 23 U.K. referendum. A total of 96 percent of voters on ‘the Rock’ opted for Remain. But since the U.K. as a whole voted 52 percent for ‘Leave,’ Picardo said the search has been on to find a model that would keep Gibraltar inside the EU. “We’ve been talking to many people in the United Kingdom … in particular to the Scots, who have been talking about this possibility of what has been described as a reverse Greenland,” Picardo said. That scenario would theoretically allow one part of an EU member to leave but the rest to remain, based on the case of Greenland’s exit from the union in 1985 despite its government at the time in Denmark staying put. Picardo called for a legal and political analysis of what could be possible, warning that “the important thing now is not to pretend that we’ve found the right model.” In June, Spain’s Foreign Minister José García-Margallo suggested it could share sovereignty of Gibraltar with the UK. Over 12,000 people cross the land border with Spain each day. Spain has long contested U.K. ownership of Gibraltar, which it shares a land border with. Locals voted to stay with London in a referendum on the issue in 2002 by a margin of 98 percent.

Visit us in EL Pareton and discover much more! How Much does it Cost For a Ton of Logs?

There is no question that the winter months are upon us! When out walking in the evening’s one can smell the unmistakable smell of wood smoke coming from houses all around. It seems that most people are aware of the advantages of using a log burner in the winter months, but how many of us are aware about the cost versus quality aspect when purchasing firewood? We recently asked Manolo the owner of El Pareton Firewood what we should consider when ordering firewood. And he had this to say: “The most common question that we get asked when the phone rings is “How much is a ton of logs?” It’s a crazy question really.

A bit like phoning a used car garage and asking how much a car is! We supply all different types and sizes of firewood, each type having its own unique qualities. Therefore the price can vary depending on the customer’s needs.” He said. “All our firewood is correctly stored throughout the winter to ensure that it loses around 20% of its humidity, making it ideal for burning. We are one of the only businesses in the area that has a custom facility dedicated to this, therefore we know that when we sell a ton of logs to a customer, not only will they get wood that will burn properly, they also get an actual ton. Some companies sell green wood from recently cut down trees, it has he extra humidity therefore is heavier and does not burn correctly.

as the dried sap sparks and produces a beautiful effect, but it is better to use it in a glass front log burner rather than open fire. Our Almond wood is very dense and is a hard, long burning wood, but needs to be mixed with other wood to burn well.”

Firewood from El Pareton is sourced from a variety of locations in Murcia and in neighbouring provinces. When fruit trees have reached the end of their useful life for fruit production they are removed and new trees planted. The wood is then purchased directly by Manolo and put into storage. “We use all types of wood, but mainly Orange, Lemon, Almond, Olive and Pine. Each one burns differently. Our olive wood comes from Andalucia, and we only sell branches of olive, not the olive root. Burning the roots can be difficult and messy as they are nearly always covered in soil. Pine wood is a lovely wood to watch burn

So it seems when it comes to stocking up on firewood this winter, there is much more to consider than simply how much a ton of logs costs. It seems that even when sending your money up in smoke, like most things in life, you only get what you pay for!

Manolo tells us that when each person calls to place an order, they are asked about the size, type and location of the log burner as this enables him to recommend the correct type of wood. “Normally we recommend a mix of the different types of wood to ensure that our customers get the best value. It’s not a simple question of “how much is a ton of logs!” No one else holds a larger stock of log in this area than us. We provide a professional service.”

kitty complies, then resume playing. If not, the play must not resume until your cat calms down and retracts his claws. If your cat bites hard or scratches you, sharply scream “OUCH,” immediately stop playing, walk away and ignore him. Cats, especially kittens, love to play. Abruptly ending a play session is an extremely powerful message. With a few repetitions, your cat will soon learn that it is his own rough and overly aggressive behavior that causes the abrupt end of an enjoyable play session.

How to Train a Cat to Stop Biting When trying to solve any problem, especially with cats, it is important to be realistic and patient. Don’t push your cat beyond his limits then get frustrated because he isn’t living up to your expectations. Give him some considerations and don’t expect him to necessarily change to suit you. Your cat is biting for a reason... If your cat often becomes overstimulated with 5 minutes of petting and stroking, then stop at 3 minutes. If a cat is frightened or feels threatened, it will naturally try to defend itself. Don’t push him over the edge and then wonder why he starts biting you! In this type of situation, cats usually give other warning signs that they are going to bite. Watch your cat and notice his body language when he gets over stimulated or irritated. Usually the ears will flatten, he will turn and stare at you, or his tail will start to flick. There is a fine line between pleasurable petting and irritating handling. When your cat has had enough, the only way it knows how to say, “stop it,” is with its claws or teeth. If you touch your cat in a sensitive area, he may bite or scratch as a way of telling you to “quit it.” If your cat has lived all his life in a quiet, private home and you suddenly bring in a bus load of noisy, rambunctious

children, don’t expect your cat to not bite or claw at them. Training a cat to stop play biting is relatively easy with both adult cats and kittens. However, training a cat not to bite in fear and anger is best and most easily accomplished in kittenhood. If you have an older cat who has been biting for many years, it is going to take much more time and energy to cure it. But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t start. Many older cats can be taught to accept situations without reacting aggressively. It just takes longer and requires more of your patience. Training your cat to stop biting or clawing you. Play sessions provide the best opportunity to teach your cat not to bite, claw or play-attack you. Cats will bite and claw when they are playing and acting out their hunting instincts. Playtime is the best time to teach your cat that he must be careful and gentle. The cat is only allowed to play using his paws, not his claws. He should be taught never to bite you. Start by enticing kitty into a gentle game of play fighting. Continuously praise the cat all the time he remains gentle. Gradually increase the excitement and intensity of the game, keeping your eyes glued to kitty. As soon as you see that the cat is getting too excited or he begins to expose his claws or teeth, tone down the play session or immediately freeze and “play dead.” This usually causes a cat to calm down and retract its claws. If

While your cat is learning not to bite and claw you, it is equally as important that you provide kitty with something he can pounce on, attack, grab with his claws and sink his teeth into. Cats are predators. Even though you provide your cat with all his meals, his instinct to hunt still exists. It is normal for cats to continually practice and finetune their hunting skills. Therefore, it is essential that you provide an outlet for this behavior or your cat will practice on you. If you simply toss a few toys on the floor, your cat may give them a few swats then quickly lose interest. It is up to you to make the toys fun. Play should be an interactive game between you and your cat. Tie a toy to the end of a length of string. Drag it around your house with kitty in pouncing pursuit. Pet stores are full of both inexpensive and exotic toys for your cat. Get something that will stimulate your cat’s interest and participation. Cat Biting - Sneak Attacks Two 15 minute play sessions a day will work wonders in venting your cats excess energy as well as fulfilling his predatory instincts. If however, your cat still sneak-attacks you, get some plant sprayers, fill them with water and place around the house. A few repetitions of an attack-squirt sequence should convince him to attack his toys instead of you!

Only once every month or two is necessary. Over washing can lead to dry, irritated skin and strip essential oils from your dog’s skin. 3. Brush your dog daily when shedding to remove the dead hair. You only need to brush your dog once a week when not shedding. This is a great dog grooming

5. Use a spray-on conditioner to help keep your dog’s coat glossy and shiny. Combine 1 to 2 tablespoons of Mane & Tail Conditioner (or similar type of dog or horse conditioner) and enough water to fill a ½ gallon spray bottle. Shake the spray bottle up each time you use it! You can use the conditioner every time you brush your dog. 6. Only brush your dog’s fur when it’s after spraying with the spray-on conditioner. Dry fur is weaker and can break more easily. 7. NEVER, under any circumstances use a scissor to mats behind the ears on your dog! It is extremely easy to cut the skin. Use a fine/medium tooth comb, and take your time.

8. When grooming, check your dog’s skin for anything out of the ordinary, such as hotspots. Hotspots are moist areas that can appear when your dog continually chews on a particular spot. Hotspots can be caused by flea bites, or not rinsing well enough when bathing, and can also occur under hair mats. 9. Remove mats from you dog’s fur before bathing. Bathing will tighten any mats, making them and make them nearly impossible to remove. This dog grooming tip can save you and your dog a lot of hassle. 10. Most dogs like Collies lose their coat each summer – even indoor dogs. Shedding is a response to changes in light levels, rather than changes in temperature. This dog grooming tip explains when even indoor dogs shed in the summer! 11. Special Bonus Dog Grooming Tip! Brush your dog once a week. If you wait longer, you risk spending more time working out mats that will appear!

Most of us love a good curry, whether we go for a sit down, a takeaway, or get cooking in the kitchen. Those dishes full of spices and cream and various other exotic ingredients are probably one of the most ‘missed’ from the motherland, although we do have quite a few restaurants in the Murcia area to fulfil our needs. Personally, I could eat Indian food all day, everyday. I had a late breakfast recently of leftover restaurant Pasanda, and the remnants of a friend’s untouched sauce, plus two pieces of peshwari na’an reheated in the toaster. While everyone else ate toast, I was the envy of the table. So, I have a rapidly growing secret to share with you. One of the magical spices included in most Indian cuisine, an often mispronounced colourful spice called Turmeric, (there’s an R third letter in) has hit the headlines for

You can’t just sprinkle this stuff on your food, you have to make it into a Golden Paste (GP) to be precise. This simple foodstuff, gently heated with water, then made into a paste with extra virgin olive oil or unrefined coconut oil, and the magic ingredient freshly ground black pepper (the Piperine is what aids its bioavailability) means this wonder cure can remain in the body for four to six hours. But don’t take my word for it. There are quite a few Facebook groups such as Turmeric user group UK, which has over forty thousand members, and their files and statuses are bulging with success stories for everything from human to animal ailments.

I’m often telling people with dogs suffering from various problems to have a look at the group and decide for themselves. Horses have had turmeric as a supplement for years, and to see the delighted and usually relieved video clips from astounded owners of their once arthritic horses bucking around paddocks like yearlings, when the vet had advised a month earlier that ‘the time had come’, or ‘puppyitis’ as it’s been dubbed by ageing dogs racing around gardens when once they spent all day on the sofa, is gladdening. Certain people shouldn’t take it, so do your research among the many files in the various groups.

The original group was started by an Australian vet, but others have sprang up attracting worldwide members.

The truth is out there, said the X Files, go find it....

YouTube is full of videos of how to make Golden Paste. There’s even a Golden Milk.

Q: You can find roads without cars, And roam through forests without trees, Cities exist without houses? Whatever can I be? Q: A boy was at a carnival and went to a booth where a man said to the boy, “If I write your exact weight on this piece of paper then you have to give me $50, but if I cannot, I will pay you $50.” The boy looked around and saw no scale so he agrees, thinking no matter what the carny writes he’ll just say he weighs more or less. Gardening in Spain; The NoDig Garden! Have you ever heard of a no dig garden? No dig gardens are just the same as other gardens – just easier to build and maintain. Basically it is gardening inside a big, sandbox-type frame of wood or other permanent material.

dig a large vegetable garden and many simply do not have the space. For such gardeners, a ‘no-dig’ garden (or raised garden bed) may be the answer. The nodig garden is built on top of the ground, so it does not matter what sort of soil you currently have.

It consists of layering organic materials, just like a big lasagna, to create a nutrient rich environment for your Many people cannot (or do not want to) plants. – They can be built anywhere, any time to any design. – All the organic matter will help retain moisture (especially in summer) and the mulch will suppress weeds, prevent erosion, and keep the plant roots from getting too hot. How to build a no-dig garden: You will need a sunny space and a flat surface. Beyond that, just add a few ingredients and you are on your way. Apart from the border, materials required include a stack of newspaper, bales of straw and hay (or other coarse, organic material), animal manure, and compost. 1. Decide where you want your no-dig garden and make a border of bricks, logs, planks or rocks. The border will contain the organic material within and discourage the weeds around it. Make your garden 45-60cm high for planting, harvesting and maintenance without bending. Keep in mind not to make it wider than you can easily reach into the garden to the halfway mark. to maintain a good, deep, rich, organic soil. no dig garden If you are building your no-dig garden on top of concrete or asphalt, or making a no-dig garden in a large container (saving you the trouble of making the border), leave out the newspapers and instead start with a good layer of gravel or stones – and remember some holes for drainage. There are hundreds of different ways to make a no-dig vegetable garden, but because it is raised above ground level, the normal headaches of drainage on heavy soils or rapid drying out of light soils are overcome. The nutrient rich soil furthermore enables you to plant with less space in between plants. This type of garden can yield tremendous crops (4-6 times the amount of normal row planting), and is a great way to grow veggies organically. 2. For the first layer, put down thick wads of wet newspaper to smother the weeds. They can contain good or bad news – it won’t make any difference! Overlap the paper edges to stop the weeds coming through. Avoid the temptation to read the newspaper as you work, though it is strange how you always find the most interesting pieces of news at this time…. 3. Now build up your no-dig garden with layers of organic material. Start with a 10cm layer of hay, followed by a thick (2cm) layer of some good organic fertilizer. This can be just about any sort of good quality material like chicken, horse, cow or sheep manure. If you do not have this sort of material available, sprinkle a layer of good commercial fertilizer (No need to go the full 2cm depth with commercial material). Continue with a 20cm layer of straw, followed by another 2cm layer of fertilizer. 4. Keep alternating these layers until the garden is as high as you want it to be. The idea is to stack layers of fine and coarse compostable materials. You can add layers of whatever organic materials you have available. You could add shredded autumn leaves piled up over winter, old straw from a horse-stable, or kitchen scraps. After each layer, water lightly, and smell the goodness. 5. Top off the garden with 10cm of compost. Use home grown compost, or buy a bag of it. Now you The NoDig Garden in Spainare ready to plant, however, it is a good idea to cover your pile and let it settle for a while before planting. Place a heavy black plastic sheet over the top, held down with bricks. When you remove this you will find you have a rich organic pile. Worms will quickly invade, breaking the organic material down into a nutrient rich medium, ideal for plant growth. As your garden matures you can add new layers

What will do well? Beans, peas, capsicum, eggplant, tomato, lettuce, sweet corn, broccoli, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and vine crops like melons and pumpkins. Root crops should not be tried until the bed is more mature. Put some herbs around your cabbage or tomato plants. And try companion planting using plants such as marigolds to help reduce the incidence of pests and diseases. Organic gardening is all about a garden in tune with itself.

Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group Our regular Monday maintenance workers have continued with street cleaning, spraying, watering and weeding, with particular attention to recent large weeds appearing during the warm weather – our ‘weedbusters’ are working their way around the whole sector! The volunteers have been pruning the massive growth on some of our trees after only 8 weeks, but much of their time is spent watering, using our little van and trailer. The very hot & humid weather continues so please think of your own plants and those planted near your casa by our volunteers; These temperatures and winds can be devastating so if you would like to adopt a tree, please choose one (or however many you wish!) planted either along the roads or near the different features we have, and let us know, then just tie a ribbon or tape on it to designate it as ‘yours’. Total responsibility for its’ watering and care will pass to you and you can watch it flourish knowing it’s because of you! Trees could be adopted as a way of remembering a special someone, perhaps…

If you’d like to join our Wednesday volunteer team, we would be very grateful and your efforts are always rewarded with a free breakfast! We continually receive positive comments about the huge transformation of ‘C’ sector North: It’s hard to recall what it used to look like before tidy verges, landscaped areas and swept streets, so if you’d like to make new friends and get some muscle definition at the same time, please get in touch and if you have any unwanted gifts which you’d like to donate for our raffles, they are always appreciated! However, once more we have experienced a really demoralising month of thefts; some plants have disappeared from one of our planters and the stand pipe and tap was stolen from the corner of the dual carriageway and the pig farm road. This could have caused a huge leak but was luckily discovered very quickly by nearby residents and has now been replaced. Please, if you see anyone spoiling the backbreaking hard work which the team and volunteers have put in, speak to us, we will keep all contact in strict confidence. A huge thank you must go to the kind Camposolers who donate to our bucket, together with those who are members of our Maintenance Scheme, and of course those who have worked on individual areas near their own homes. Without your support, and that of our volunteers, none of this would happen and it all makes a huge difference. Thanks must also go to residents who have donated plants, including a lovely lemon tree which will be planted at the centre of one of the raised beds. If you have any unwanted gifts which you’d like to donate for our raffles, they are always appreciated, thank-you Tickets are selling fast for our next Social Evening at the Golf Club with Barrington on 23rd September: entry only 6 Euros donation, and tickets will soon be available for our Christmas Meal and Dance on 9th December with Cassie Kennedy. Please support us at these functions as they promise to be great evenings! Further details of both these events can be found on our chalkboards or contact John, our Chairman, on 634 325 427. The Mediterranean Diet

Myths, Facts, and Health Benefits of a Mediterranean Diet Improving Emotional Health When you think about Mediterranean food, your mind probably goes to pizza and pasta from Italy, or hummus and pita from Greece, but these dishes don’t exactly fit into any healthy dietary plans advertised as “Mediterranean.” The reality is that a true Mediterranean diet consists mainly of fruits and vegetables, seafood, olive oil, hearty grains, and other foods that help fight against heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, and cognitive decline. It’s a diet worth chasing; making the switch from pepperoni and pasta to fish and avocados may take some effort, but you could soon be on a path to a healthier and longer life. What is a “Mediterranean diet”? Mediterranean Diet Pyramid Pizza, gyros, falafel, lasagna, rack of lamb, and long loaves of white bread: all these foods have become synonymous with what we call “Mediterranean.” We picture huge, three-hour feasts with multiple courses and endless bottles of wine. But over the past 50 years the idea of Mediterranean fare has altered, ramping up the calories and unhealthy fat at the expense of the region’s traditional fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seafood, olive oil, dairy, and a glass or two of red wine. What was once a healthy and inexpensive way of eating back then is now associated with

Health &Wellbeing heavy, unhealthy dishes that contribute to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, mood disorders, and other health problems. After World War II, a study examined the diets and health of almost 13,000 middle-aged men in the US, Japan, Italy, Greece (including Crete), the Netherlands, Finland, and Yugoslavia. Remarkably, well-fed American men had higher rates of heart disease than those in countries whose diets had been restricted by the deprivations of war. It was the men of Crete, arguably the poorer people of the study, who enjoyed the best cardiovascular health. This was due to physical labor and their unique food pyramid. The Mediterranean Diet Pyramid is based on the dietary traditions of Crete, Greece, Italy and Spain circa 1960 at a time when the rates of chronic disease among populations there were among the lowest in the world, and adult life expectancy was among the highest, even though medical services were limited. Aside from eating a diet consisting mainly of fresh and homegrown foods instead of processed goods, other vital elements to the Mediterranean diet are daily exercise, sharing meals with others, and fostering a deep appreciation for the pleasures of eating healthy and delicious foods. Health benefits of a Mediterranean diet A traditional Mediterranean diet consisting of large quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, fish and olive oil—coupled with physical activity— reduces the risk of heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. More specifically: Protecting against type 2 diabetes. A Mediterranean diet is rich in fiber, slowing down digestion and preventing huge swings in blood sugar.

weakness and other signs of frailty by about 70 percent. Reducing risk of Alzheimer’s. Researchers speculate that the Mediterranean diet may improve cholesterol and blood sugar levels and overall blood vessel health—all factors that may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Halving the risk of Parkinson’s disease. In a diet containing high levels of antioxidants that prevent cells from undergoing a damaging process called oxidative stress, the risk of Parkinson’s disease is practically cut in half. Increased longevity. When there is a reduction in developing heart disease or cancer, as in the case when you follow a Mediterranean diet, there is a 20% reduced risk of death at any age. Myths and facts of a Mediterranean diet Following a Mediterranean diet has many benefits, but there are still a lot of misconceptions on exactly how to take advantage of the lifestyle to lead a healthier, longer life. The following are some myths and facts about the Mediterranean diet. Myth 1: It costs a lot to eat this way. Fact: If you’re creating meals out of beans or lentils as your main source of protein, and sticking with mostly plants and whole grains, then the Mediterranean diet is less expensive than serving dishes of packaged or processed foods. Myth 2: If one glass of wine is good for your heart, than three glasses is three times as healthy. Fact: Moderate amounts of red wine (one drink a day for women; two for men) certainly has unique health benefits for your heart, but drinking too much has the opposite effect. Anything more than two glasses of wine can actually be bad for your heart. Myth 3: If you follow the traditional Mediterranean diet then you will lose weight. Fact: Those living on Greek islands don’t enjoy good cardiovascular health just by eating differently; they walk up and down steep hills to tend to their garden and animals, often living off what they can grow themselves. Physical activity plays a large role. Myth 4: The Mediterranean diet is only about the food. Fact: The food is a huge part of the diet, yes, but don’t overlook the other ways the Mediterraneans live their lives. When they sit down for a meal, they don’t sit

Health &Wellbeing in front of a television or eat in a rush; they sit down for a relaxed, leisurely meal with others, which may be just as important for your health as what’s on your plate. How to make the change If you’re feeling daunted by the thought of changing your eating habits to a Mediterranean diet, here are some suggestions to get you started: Eat lots of vegetables. Try a simple plate of sliced tomatoes drizzled with olive oil and crumbled feta cheese, or load your thin crust pizza with peppers and mushrooms instead of sausage and pepperoni. Salads, soups, and crudité platters are also great ways to load up on vegetables. Change the way you think about meat. If you eat red meat, have smaller amounts and opt for “organic, grassfed” whenever possible to avoid the antibiotics, hormones and GMO feed associated with industrially raised meat. Put small strips of organic, free-range chicken on your salad, or add small amounts of meat to a whole-wheat pasta dish.

Cook a vegetarian meal one night a week. If it’s helpful, you can jump on the “Meatless Mondays” trend of foregoing meat on the first day of the week, or simply pick a day where you build meals around beans, whole grains, and vegetables. Once you get the hang of it, try two nights a week.

You can change all that you want on the outside; however, until you change what’s on the inside nothing changes. If nothing changes then nothing changes………

Use good fats. Extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, sunflower seeds, olives, and avocados are great sources of healthy fats for your daily meals. Enjoy dairy products such as natural cheese, Greek or plain yogurt. Research shows that eating whole-milk dairy products is linked to less body fat and lower levels of obesity. This may be because full-fat dairy makes you feel fuller, faster, and keeps you feeling satisfied for longer, thus helping you to eat less overall. Choose organic or raw milk products if possible. For dessert, eat fresh fruit. Instead of ice cream, cake or other baked goods, opt for strawberries, fresh figs, grapes, or apples.

Always eat breakfast. Fruits, whole grains, and other fiber-rich foods are a great way to start your day, keeping you pleasantly full for hours. Eat seafood twice a week. The September meeting will on the 28th at Altorreal Golf. All members, new members and guests should register with the society secretary as soon as possible, as this is a very popular venue. Los Amigos De Mazarrón F.C Straight Down the Middle Golf Society Phew!! Mad dogs and Englishmen!! Wednesday 23rd July was a typical Spanish summer day, with a temperature at 7.30am of some 28 degrees. The 21 members and 2 guests who gathered at the clubhouse on Camposol Golf, knew they were in for a warm day. The first tee off was on number 10 at 8.30am which certainly helped to get round most of the course before it got into the mid-30’s. Not to be put off by the early start, or the weather it was obvious from the comments made that several members were having a decent round. This proved to be correct when the cards were checked at the end, and it was discovered that over half of the members had scored 30 or more points. Whilst enjoying a glass of the amber nectar, the final classification was sorted, and, in joint 3rd place was Ian Dalley, and John Taylor with a score of 33points. Second place went to Richard Dixon on 39 points. The winner with a great score of 40 points

After a frantic week in mid July, the future of Mazarron FC was secured when a new Board of Directors was formed just hours before the deadline for registering the team in the Preferente Autonomica for the 2016/17 season. Initially Blas Garcia Garcia, a former successful player with Mazarron FC, became President but Ruben Martinez then took over with Blas taking up the position of Vice President. A new sponsor was announced, Mazarron firm Construcciones Francisco Coy and their Director Miguel Coy became Secretary of the Football Club. Gerard Mulligan of Los Amigos de Mazarron FC will oversee the financial affairs of the Club with Antonio Lopez of the Spanish supporters group Redboys becoming a Vocal. Another former Mazarron player Cobos is the new coach and he wasted little time in bringing a number of new faces to the Club. In addition, the Los Amigos Player of the Year goalkeeper Antonio signed for another year as did last year’s captain and Players’ Player of the Year Juan Andreo. Many of last year’s squad have departed but new signings include former Mazarron striker Boudia, and three players from La Hoya Lorca, Mariano, Cesar and Alex Jimenez. Goalkeeper Julio Gomez from Sporting Saladar in the Alicante Primera Division is another new signing along with Jorge Brocal previously with CD Alberca and local rivals Bala Azul. With so many changes both behind the scenes and on the field it is bound to take time for the new team to reach its full potential and it is hoped that the players and new administration will be given plenty of encouragement from the loyal band of Spanish and ex-pat supporters.

after a disastrous period in its history. At times he was a “one man band” working tirelessly, first to ensure the survival of the Club with assistance from Los Amigos and others, and then to turn things round with promotion back to the Preferente and just missing out on a second successive promotion last season. The new season begins a week earlier than usual on the weekend of 27th/28th August and finishes on the weekend of 6th/7th May. Mazarron’s first game is a tough fixture away to Montecasillas followed by a home game against UD Los Garres. Mazarron’s home games are normally played on Sundays with varying kick off times. The ex-pat supporters Club, Los Amigos de Mazarron FC also organise a supporters’ coach to most away games. Full details of all games, dates and kick off times are advertised in the local media, on www.mazarronfc.es, on our own Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Facebook page, fb.me/mazarron2016, and on posters at various points throughout Camposol and Mazarron Forthcoming league fixtures are:Sunday 4th September U. Hazy Summer Days As always August has been a much quieter month in the Club with no competitions as many people have visitors or have decided to return to a cooler climate for the summer. However, for the past month quite a MBC members have been taking advantage of the warm summer nights and are bowling on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. With a colder than normal Spring and summer arriving later than usual it is now hoped that this weather will now hopefully will last well into the Autumn (minus the winds!). Our new members are very enthusiastic and showing great promise. They may even give a few of the longer serving members a run for their money for a place in the League Teams!! By the time this article goes to press, September will be with us and we will be in the throes of organising the League and Triples teams.

2016

Firstly however, we will be holding an EGM in September to select a new Club Captain and Vice President. These positions require a total commitment to the Club as well as producing a heavy workload for the prospective candidates. We envisage, with the new Club Captain on Board, a training programme will start to improve and refine the game of the new and established members. The Club will still be holding roll-up sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings until further notice. Full details of times changes for the Autumn can be found on the website at Mazarronbowlsclub.webs.com or from the Secretary, Sue Hattrell at mazarronbc@ live.co.uk.

weddings on the beach, obviously popular on Ibiza, and examples of how the rich and famous live. One evening a massive super yacht anchored so its helicopter could land on. On another, a different super yacht was guided in to a safe anchorage after dark by its tender. There was some great sailing, lovely moonlit nights at anchor and a chance for some to visit different places while ashore. After 10 days Ganty telephoned to say they had crossed back early because of the forecast. The next day Gemini J and Berti left for the mainland and encountered the very strong winds and up to 4 meter swell that Ganty had avoided. In the same conditions Ganty sailed from Calpe to Torrevieja downwind surfing at up to 8 knots with just a storm jib set. On Sunday Lotti’s crew awoke to a

Five for Ibiza

Full of excitement and expectation, after weeks of meeting and planning, the famous five were ready to organise the jam sandwiches and pop needed for their summer adventure. Sorry, not a new Enid Blyton’s famous five story, but the yachts, Lotti, Berti, Ganty, Gemini J and Baltic Moon and their 18 crew from the SAMM Cruising Group on their trip to Ibiza and Formentera. Instead of jam sandwiches and pop, each boat packed aboard enough groceries for four people on a two week sail. The plan was to sail the 62 miles to Calpe on June 8th and cross to the islands on June 9th in flotilla. Once there, each boat could go its own way, meet up again for a birthday celebration after a week and then at the end for the return crossing. The first day went well, the next morning was when the ‘the plan’ went wrong. Ganty’s engine would not start and Baltic Moon had battery problems so they were stuck for the day. Lotti, Berti and Gemini J weighed anchor at 5am to find the bay blocked by a large fishing fleet but managed to find a way through to start their crossing. Oh the joys of boating! The highlight of the day was a encountering a pod of about 30 dolphins. They spent 20 minutes around the boats, diving under, swimming on their backs and leaping clear of the water, a great experience. Ganty and Moon made it across the following day. From then on everybody had a great time visiting some lovely bays and meeting in San Antonio for a meal to celebrate one skipper’s birthday. After the meal the adventurous ones stayed out to see some of San Antonio’s infamous night life, rolling home in the early hours. Some of the highlights were seeing

beautiful morning, with the sea like a mirror, to find a yacht positioned 6 inches from the stern of a power boat, a clear example of the need to be aware of a boats swinging circle when anchoring. On Lotti’s last day she left for an overnight sail directly to San Pedro. It was the night of the full ‘strawberry’ moon of the summer solstice which rose about 1 hour before sunset so they had the full moon to the east and the red sunset sky to the west, absolutely beautiful. Everybody got back safe and sound after a fabulous two weeks. Find more information about SAMM and the Cruising Group by going to www. sailingmarmenor.com/groups/cruising/

continues its efforts to reach agreement with the suppliers,” said the company in a statement. The two suppliers are CarTrim, which makes seats, and ES Automobilguss, which makes cast iron parts used in gearboxes. They are demanding compensation from VW because they say they their incomes were hit when VW cancelled a contract. VW says it is continuing its efforts to reach agreement with the suppliers.

Electric car sets world acceleration record An electric racing car built by Swiss student engineers has broken the world record for acceleration by batterypowered vehicles. The grimsel car took only 1.513 seconds to reach 100 kmph (62 mph) - slashing about a quarter of a second off the previous record

time. So far, no petrol-powered production car has managed to hit the same speed in a comparable time.

VW faces production delays amid dispute

Volkswagen has halted production at several plants in Germany, hitting the output of Golf and Passat models amid a dispute with two external suppliers. The company said the production stoppage would not affect cars that have already been ordered. Any effect on future production will depend on how long the dispute lasts. Some production has already been halted at Wolfsburg, which makes Golfs, and at Zwickau where Golfs and Passats are made. Production is due to begin again later this week. Production has also stopped at Braunschweig, which makes chassis parts and plastic parts, but should start again next Monday. Later this week, production will cease at Salzgitter, which is involved in engine production, and Kassel where transmission and exhaust system production takes place. In what the company said was an unrelated issue, production was halted at Emden, which makes Passats, last week and will resume on Wednesday. In some cases employees have been sent home, in others they are engaged in short-time working on other jobs within the plants. The German Economy Ministry called on VW and the suppliers end the dispute. “We assume and also expect the companies to solve the sticking issues as soon as possible,” Economy Ministry spokesman Andreas Audretsch told journalists during a regular news conference. He added: “It is about thousands of jobs, which could be affected by shorter work hours, and the responsibility to tackle these problems constructively is very high.” VW in the UK issued a statement in which it said the company was “working intensively on minimising the acute supply risk, the priority being to maintain production in some areas and to ensure that deliveries can be made to customers. “Volkswagen currently expects to be able to adhere to all confirmed delivery dates,” it added.

Or so you would think if you read some of the headlines in the UK press in recent days. The only certainty in the UK at present is uncertainty and that can very quickly translate into doubts and fears about what is to come. I don’t have crystal ball either, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we looked back at Christmas time and wondered what all the fuss was about. Spain has effectively had no operational government for some time – and the economy has improved. Not sure what that tells us about our political leaders! Do you Rent your Holiday Home in Spain? The reasons for purchasing a holiday home here is Spain are many. Not only can it be a sound financial investment, but with a fantastic climate, low cost of living and excellent travel links, Spain is the ideal country to enjoy year round breaks. Many owners also capitalise on their Spanish property purchase and make it work for them by earning a few extra euros renting it out when it is not being used. If this sounds like you, did you know that in doing so you could be unwittingly breaking the law? Property rental laws regarding holiday lets in Spain vary from region to region, however there have been changes to the law recently in regard to individuals who choose to rent their property privately and also for rental agencies that rent property on behalf of their clients. Both agencies and individuals who rent properties on a commercial basis must meet a certain criteria set out by the Murcia tourist board and must be fully registered. Failure to do so can result in fines of up to 10,000 euros, and this year the authorities appear to be enforcing the rules by all possible means. From checking social media sites, local websites, magazines and newspapers, they are demonstrating that the law can and will be enforced. Pleading ignorance to these laws will do little to reduce

page 50

fines, nor get you off with a telling off or slap on the wrist. If you are unsure of how these laws affect you and wish to make sure that you are compliant, then ensure that you rent your home through a reputable agency, or check with your lawyer regarding your individual circumstances.

Bankinter Predicts Property Price Rise As we all are well aware, the property market in Spain is in a phase of recovery. Investing in real estate in this country has even become attractive for investors once more. Many experts in various fields directly or indirectly linked to the property market are keeping a close eye on what’s happening with prices and sales in various parts of the country and as a whole. Bankinter, one of the banks in Spain that was least affected by the property crisis, has calculated that house prices will moderately rise all across the peninsula and on the islands as well.

In its biannual report on the property market in Spain, Bankinter has forecast that the demand for residential property will increase over the next 18 months, to reach a volume of 470,000 sales a year in 2017. This is great news for anyone wishing to sell. We have already seen that the time it takes to sell a property in many areas is being reduced by around half. And it is all being helped along by an improvement in the economy, low interest rates and good yields from renting property. Bankinter has calculated that house prices should go up by around 3-5% annually as a result of the renewed demand for property and lack of new builds in popular parts of the big cities. Due to this shortage of new property, the number of licences approved for new constructions has begun to rise as well, which is a positive sign for the construction sector.

The recuperation of property prices began in the cities of Madrid and Barcelona and then extended to other major cities in Spain. According to data published by the Department of Public Works, house prices have gone up by approximately 2.4% between March 2015 and March 2016. The regions in which prices increased the most during this time are: Balearic Islands (9.6%), Catalonia (4.9%) and Madrid (4.2%). House prices have only dropped in the following regions from last year: Aragón (-0.6%), Cantabria (-1.3%), the Basque Country (-1.9%), La Rioja (-2.1%) and Ceuta and Melilla (-0.3%).

Uncle Paul’s problem page Join Uncle Paul on Facebook!

Dear Uncle Paul A friend of mine who lives on Camposol A, recently found out her husband of 15 years is a crossdresser and wants to ‘come out’ She has agreed to stay and live together as ‘friends only’ but is extremely concerned (as I am) for her 2 lovely children aged 10 and 12. He has started to sneak in and out of the house dressed as a woman and this need he has seems to be getting stronger. He wants to tell the children but she is totally against this until they are much older. I have to agree with her but she is afraid to ask him to leave as he would ‘come out ‘ permanently and they would find out then anyway. What should I tell her? Flory Dear Flory What a pickle - It`s tough every which way. You don`t say how much they both understand or are accustomed to the cross dressing scene. Would your friend really want to stay in this relationship if the children knew? They need to be careful making the announcement and later announcing a divorce. Kids do take things in their stride but don`t underestimate the impact of others. They may appear OK to you or me but they could simply be hiding their pain for fear of a family split. However it seems to me that the husband is getting so brazen about his hobby that they will find out sooner or later anyway. I think it will be better for your friend and her husband to tell them the truth rather than let them see him randomly sashaying into Alley Pally for a game of bowls in a wedding dress and veil. Uncle Paul Dear Uncle Paul My son and I have had no contact with my ex for over 10 years. He

2016

made contact a few months ago on Facebook. I agreed to meet and talk about things but he cancelled the meeting the night before. The problem is that he has sent me more messages accusing me of stopping him from seeing our son. This has never been the case, I did encourage him to stay in contact when we first split but he was too busy enjoying his freedom to care. I had an email three weeks ago where he replied that we have a lot to talk about and will catch up soon. I have heard nothing since then and my son is getting upset and worked up. I don’t know what to say to him to get him to come and see his son I have messaged him several times and haven’t had a reply! Any advice on what I should do? Mandy Dear Mandy For now...I don’t think you should address the fact that his father doesn’t want to see him. His mind isn’t mature enough to handle that fact yet. If I were you I would just tell him you can’t reach him but you will keep trying and leave it at that. Maybe your son is better off even if he is his father. Also don’t bad mouth your son’s father around your son. No matter how much you are tempted to. (Not saying you do this) But it could be damaging. Don’t let him waltz back into your son’s life until you are sure he is not going to dump on him. You must protect your child from any unnecessary suffering.

Some have their own beds and I tuck them in at night. I especially love Julie a little chubby one that sleeps with me. This is my life behind closed doors. My wife hates Julie because she feels I give her more attention than her. She often tells me that they’re not real. I am aware of this but i love them so much. Do I need help? Van Man Dear Van Man I can’t help you with this. This is a major issue. You have created a fantasy world that is consuming you to the point where you’re actual, blood and flesh apparently feels neglected. This is not good. Your wife should come first in your life. You need major therapy. I urge you to get help immediately. Are the dolls getting in the way of your real life? YES!!!! There are questions you need to answer, and you need to hear your own voice answering. 1. Am I a saddo? Yes 2. Am I a sicko for sleeping with dolls? Yes 3. Do I need help? Yes, Yes, Oh god Yes!!! 4. Do not ever write to me again!!!!! Uncle Paul’s Voice Uncle Paul

Stop messaging him. He seems rather like a flake. Or is he perhaps in a relationship and his partner isn’t happy about getting in touch with you and your son. But honestly, don’t feel that you need to justify his accusations. He is the one who hasn’t been in contact for 10 years. He chose to stay away. Uncle Paul

Dear Uncle Paul I am 53 years old and I play with dolls. I feel that they’re real and I give them a name and a voice. I sleep with them and I’m over protective of them as well.

Charity corner WHAT WE DO – WE HELP PEOPLE Our ‘outreach clients’ register with us via Social Services, who assess their incomes, expenses and living conditions, to ensure their needs are legitimate. They send us a report, confirming that this individual or family needs help. Working in close collaboration with Social Services enables us to focus our efforts on people who are genuinely in need. We are an ‘Authorised Distribution Organisation’ for the Spanish Government’s Food Bank. Each year, we receive about 15 tonnes of food from FEGA (Federacion Espanola Garantia Agricola). This is distributed on a monthly basis to our registered clients at one of our Aid Days. From this ‘Food Bank’ each month, a family of four receives: 9 litres milk 9 tins tuna 3 tins fruit 3kg pasta 3 Litre olive oil 3 tins green beans 3 packs dried soup 3 kg chickpeas 3 kg dried beans 6 tins tomato 3kg rice 6 packs of biscuits In order to top up what is provided by Spanish Government, we buy extra supplies with the money raised from our activities and from donations. For example, extra milk, oil, sugar, toiletries, sanitary towels and nappies, are always highly demanded. Everything we distribute must be meticulously counted, recorded and justified to the relevant authorities. We also assist in covering our clients other needs such as clothing, furniture and companionship as well as distributing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever we can.

Social Centre on Sector B is now one of our drop-off points for donations; it is open from 9.00am Monday to Friday. If you have any large items that need to be picked up, please call Badr on 603 389 006. Our shops in the Port and in Mazarrón Town are re-open now September is here. Donations have been flooding in and they are both crammed full of bargains galore! The Mazarrón Town shop is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 10.002.00 and the Port of Mazarrón shop is open Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 10.00-1.00. Call us or look on our Facebook page for directions to either shop. We thank you for your generous support and we also thank all of our wonderful volunteers who give their time selflessly in order to improve the lives of others.

If you would like more information about the work we do, or would like to get involved, please get in touch via facebook.com/mad.mazarron or our email address madmazarron@live. com We desperately need personal hygiene products like shampoo, shower gel, sanitary towels, baby wipes etc. These can be put in the donation bins at the various outlets on Camposol, Puerto de Mazarrón and Bolnuevo. My goodness the tears have not stopped flowing this month! Through both happiness, sadness, sheer frustration and anger. Lets start with the good news. Gini and her puppy Reggi now have homes. Gini is going to one of our volunteers Gill, and I know she is going to be the perfect companion for Gill’s other dog Dulce who is also an AAR rescue. Little Reggi is going to England, how I am going to miss them both. Good luck sweethearts. It is always so rewarding when we get to meet our dogs that have been rehomed. Two years ago, Toffee was abandoned as a puppy and she is looking fabUlous. Always happy to meet up with ex residents and love to see how they are progressing. That is the positive, happy side to my job. This past month has been so upsetting with regard to equines. Where shall I begin?? It started with a horse in the Puerto Lombreras area. This boys time was running out and after exhaustive talks with the Chief of Police down there, felt we could help him. I just want to say, in the end we didn’t get him but your generosity and support was overwhelming It is very humbling to know so many of you follow us and shows the power of social media. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. On to the next story. The donkey Mr. Gray, was found by another charity who came to us for advice! He had been attacked by dogs and his rear quarters had a wound the size of a dinner plate. Both sides were affected and we had no choice, but, to take him to our ‘Supervets’ (Manolo and his team) in San Vicente, Alicante. They were waiting for us, and were truly shocked at the state he was in. He is going to be there at least a month, but, early signs are positive. Take a look at our FB page to see video footage after only 24 hours in the care of these amazing vets. My goodness the difference in 4 days to his wound is nothing less than AMAZING. He still has a long way to go but initial signs are encouraging. As I am writing this article I received yet another call about a horrendously abused very small pony. This poor boy has again been attacked by dogs and his top lip is missing. No shade, no, water, no food and no bedding. Before I have even put the phone down I’m shouting Kev, get that box hitched up there’s another rescue. He is now in our care, with all his creature comforts!! All this takes thousands of Euros, if you wish to make a donation, you can do so through Paypal to andreasanimalrescuemurcia@hotmail.com every little helps, even just buying a few items from one of our two shops in either Roldan or Mazarron Town. We are always happy to see you. I could go on and on this month, but, I am running out of space! As usual, I will be on Camposol B Car Park, every Monday from 11.30-1.30pm. I will gratefully receive unwanted clothes, bric a brac, household items, books (well almost anything!!) and happily bring you up to date with any of our rescues. Andrea x

training provided by Debbie on Friday.

The FAST2016 Responders have had another busy month, being on call 24 hours a day and training every Tuesday and extra

During the past few weeks, we have recruited additional volunteers who will receive guidance and training from our Training Team to become fully qualified and accredited FAST2016 Responders on Camposol. Unfortunately, due to the shortage of FAST2016 Responders, there have been a few days over the last few months where our service has been suspended. There is a pre-recorded message on the emergency number for such an occasion. However, we are hoping that full cover will imminently be resumed as soon as our new recruits are fully trained and accredited by Murcia Health Authority. We should also like to welcome back Carl, Mandy and Suzanne to FAST2016; it is always nice to welcome old friends back to our team. FAST 2016 are planning a “Health Awareness Day” on Wednesday 28th September at Mariano’s on A Sector; everyone is welcome. More details will be posted on our web page or from the bookstall on the Friday Market on B sector. This initiative may be expanded to get the health awareness message across to various groups for the benefit of the community of Camposol. More information on our web page. You may have noticed that we have changed the colour of our tops since we reformed in June, but rest assured that you will still receive the same assistance from all the Responders and Supporters as previously. Trips The coach trip to Alicante is now fully booked thanks to Sue and Jane. The next trip will be an early Christmas shopping trip to Benidorm on Wednesday 16th November, tickets on sale outside Euronics on a Friday at €15. Enjoy a day at your leisure, shopping in the market/site seeing/chilling. The day is yours to do with as you wish. On Tuesday 13th December there will be the “Ultimate Christmas Shopping Extravaganza!” For €20 per person, there will be three trips in one:Licor43 Experience Free afternoon to shop at La Zenia Boulevard Visit to Iceland at San Javier Forthcoming Trip for 2017 An evening at the Aguilas Carnival in February 2017 (reported to be the 3rd biggest in the world). Tickets and price to be advised. The price will include a seat in the stalls lining the route. Register your interest with either Sue or Jane now. Planning is underway for the Christmas Fayre at Mariano’s on Saturday 29th October. There will be the normal traders, the renowned cake stall and lots more! Plus the FAST2016 raffle with fabulous prizes on offer will be drawn. Please do not forget that FAST2016 is always looking for new Responders to help provide the continuity of this wonderful service to the residents of Camposol. If you would like to join our friendly team and, at the same time, receive training so you can provide excellent lifesaving skills if required, then please contact us at our recruitment email address provided below. Regular Tuesday training sessions will recommence at the beginning of September. All the information is on our web page, www.FAST2016.org.
