JOURNAL

THE Dear Readers,

Welcome to the October 2018 edition of The Journal. This month we hope that we have created a magazine that you will find very enjoyable. As usual we have all the news and items of interest relevant to our readers and are very excited that our new website will soon be completed. It has come to our attention that some people on the magazine mailing list have been not been receiving their monthly PDF copy of the magazine. This was a small technical hitch that has now been resolved. If you would like to join our mailing list and receive The Journal directly into your inbox then me email address and we will add you directly to our list. When out and about on my travels recently I have heard some rumours that I am very ill and at deaths door. I take great pleasure it letting both our readers and advertisers know that these have been greatly exaggerated. I am in tip top health and look forward to seeing our readers and advertisers when out and a about on my travels. Not the first time I have heard this rumour and probably not the last. So on the cheery news that I am officially not dead, please enjoy this months magazine!

unclear. Under the draft withdrawal agreement EU regulations, which currently limit roaming charges, would apply to the end of the transition period in December 2020. But in March 2018, Prime Minister Theresa May said that after Brexit the UK will not be part of the EU’s Digital Single Market, which will continue to develop after our withdrawal from the EU.

No-deal Brexit: Brits travelling to Europe ‘to face passport problems and soaring mobile bills’ No-deal Brexit: Brits travelling to Europe ‘to face passport problems and soaring mobile bills’ The British government was set to release more risk assessment papers on Thursday warning its citizens of future headaches with driving licences, passports and mobile phone bills if Britain crashes out of the EU without a deal. The reports are part of a series of socalled impact papers or risk assessments produced by the British government to prepare its citizens for likely scenarios if the UK crashed out of the EU without a deal. Last month the British government released a list of 25 ‘technical notices’ revealing that Brits living in the European Union could lose access to their UK bank accounts and would face higher credit card charges in the event of a no-deal Brexit. New papers will be published Thursday that touch on the subjects of driving licences, mobile phone bills and passports.

That means that the European regulation that bans roaming charges will not automatically be part of UK law, so British mobile operators might be able to reintroduce the charges. But all may depend on what is included in any deal struck between London and Brussels over their future relationship after Brexit. The papers are due to be released officially after British PM Theresa May chairs a special cabinet meeting on what to do in the event of a no-deal. But the notices are expected to warn that the mutual recognition of EU driving licences would automatically end if Britain leaves the EU without an agreement. That scenario would clearly create headaches for Brits living in France who use their British driving licenses as well as the thousands of tourists and lorry drivers who cross the Channel each day. When it comes to passports the government is expected to warn that after Brexit unless a deal is thrashed out then EU countries may not allow British citizens to enter their countries if they have less than six months left on their passport before it expires. Up until now this has not been an issue. And as many have also predicted the government is warning that mobile phone roaming charges for Brits who travel to the EU could soar from March 2019 if there’s a no-deal Brexit.

Brexiteers say the risk assessments are scaremongering on the part of the British government but Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab has said he believes the impact papers are “part of our sensible, pragmatic approach to preparing for all outcomes.” Speaking ahead of the publications Raab said: ‘With six months to go until the UK leaves the European Union, we are stepping up our ‘no deal’ preparations so that Britain can continue to flourish, regardless of the outcome of negotiations. He added that “getting a deal with the EU is still by far and away the most likely outcome.” The release of the papers is also believed to be tactical on the British government’s part as they attempt to show Brussels that they are seriously preparing for a no-deal Brexit in order to strengthen its negotiating hand with Brussels as negotiations reach a critical point over the coming weeks. More impact papers are set to be published in the coming weeks

The question of what will happen with roaming charges even if there is a deal between London and Brussels is still

The San Sebastian Horror and Fantasy Film Festival has been running since in 1990 by the San Sebastian Municipal Board of Culture. Born with the goal of attracting youngsters to the movies, while audiences of this kind have lost none of their importance, the event now encompasses spectators of all ages. But this is not just your standard film festival, it’s also an enormous horror and fantasy knees-up, packed with street shows, performances, music, comic encounters and exhibitions, to name but a few. Every Autumn, at the end of October, the streets of San Sebastian’s Old Town are the ideal place to stay for fans of the horror movies and also for all kind of monsters and ghosts.

“The Best For Food, Drinks, Entertainment And Sports” Camposol sector A Ahead of that, you might have seen that the Government has published a series of technical notices on a range of areas, to help businesses and citizens prepare in the unlikely event of a no deal Brexit.

An open letter from the British ambassador to British citizens living in Spain Simon Manley has written an open letter to all British residents in Spain regarding the latest Brexit developments. As many of you are no doubt aware, this autumn will be an important period in the ongoing Brexit negotiations, leading up to the European Council meeting on October 18th.

page 6

Firstly, let me reassure you though that the Government does not want, nor does it expect, a no deal outcome in the negotiations. As a result of the significant progress made in negotiations, I remain confident that the UK will agree a positive and ambitious deal with the EU - an outcome that is in the interests of both the UK and the EU, and in the interest of both British and EU citizens. And of course, we continue to discuss the implementation of the deal agreed last December on the rights of UK citizens currently living in the EU and EU citizens living in the UK with the Spanish authorities. But as a responsible government, we must prepare for all eventualities, however unlikely. Hence these technical notices on driving

licences, and travelling between the UK and the EU, amongst other subjects. I appreciate that this is a period of uncertainty and many of you have questions and want more advice for UK nationals living in Spain. We want to help you prepare for all scenarios and further relevant information will continue to be made available on gov. uk over the coming weeks. And both the Embassy and Consulates will continue with the outreach events that we have planned throughout Spain, with some 20 such events planned between now and the end of the year, and ensure that your questions and concerns are shared with the relevant UK government departments. In the meantime, please ensure you are correctly registered here in Spain, and stay up to date with the latest news, by signing up for email alerts and visiting the Living in Spain guide on gov.uk, and continue to follow our “Brits in Spain” social media channels, including on Facebook. Both I and our UK in Spain consular teams will continue to share with you what we know, when we know it, to provide you with as much clarity as possible.

The Demise of CDIP? Readers will probably be aware that the President, Vice-President, Social Secretary, Deputy Social-Secretary and the Recruitment and Business Liaison Secretary have resigned en bloc from the CDIP Committee. This is due to the increasingly unacceptable behaviour of the General Secretary of the party. Such unacceptable behaviour has manifested itself in a number of ways. This includes sending a gratuitous and insulting letter about a member of the Committee to another member, completely ignoring Committee decisions, organising a social event without any reference to the Committee or the Social Secretary, making arbitrary decisions concerning party funds without consulting the Committee and not producing party correspondence when requested. Furthermore, the individual who works in IT who building the CDIP web site has resigned due to what she has described as the General Secretary’s “ arrogance.” This situation has been reached because those Committee Members who have resigned do not believe the General Secretary can change his offensive behaviour and felt his behaviour was becoming ever more dictatorial. With an election campaign on the horizon it

was felt CDIP could not fight an election effectively given the non-relationship that developed between former Committee Members and the General Secretary of the party. It is this that has to change. Those Committee Members who have resigned are quite willing to rejoin the Committee if one of the two following conditions are met. Firstly the General Secretary gives an unequivocal assurance that he will act in a more democratic manner than has been the case hitherto. Secondly, if party members pass a vote of “ No confidence” in the current General Secretary and vote in a replacement.

close the next local elections are and if Camposol is to achieve its own voice on Mazarron Council.

CST/FAST are a group of volunteers based on Camposol, Mazarron. Our purpose is to attend medical emergencies on Camposol before the emergency services arrive. We also attend if the call does not require an ambulance. We can provide information over the phone and support to the patient and family when we arrive. EXAMPLE. While writing this article, I am on duty, a 12 hour night. I get a call from someone who needs FAST to help them. After taking their details, I call my partner and agree to meet and get to the incident as soon as possible. We arrive and deal with the situation until the emergency services arrive. When our work is complete, we prepare to leave, the feeling that we have helped the person in pain but also given comfort and support to family and friends is so rewarding. FAST were called out 27 times in August, resulting in 14 ambulances being called. That means we saved the ambulance teams 13 visits to Camposol. The FAST Responders provided comfort and support to family and friends whilst waiting for the arrival of the ambulance teams, or advice if an ambulance is not required. It is sometimes better to transport the casualty in their own vehicle. They can get to the medical centre much quicker. Since FAST was formed in 2011 they have attended over 1055 calls for help up to the end of August. The cost of keeping this service on the road is expensive. We are always looking for more ways to raise funds. Our members are busy looking for ways to raise funds. In September we had donations from Mia at the Vista bar on A.

On the 7th September at Oscars bar on B sector we had a €600 donation from the SOS. (Silly Old Sods). Every cent raised or donated goes to support CST\FAST on Camposol, no one in the association gets a cent for what they do. We do not even claim expenses. Representatives of 5 major organisations on Camposol attended a meeting hosted by FAST at the Cultural Centre. Those attending were representatives from FAST, MABS, Royal British Legion, The Fiesta Group and Colin Thackwell. It was agreed to work together for the good of all residents and visitors to Camposol. It was also agreed to have regular meetings. FAST have a Golf day arranged on the 12th October at the Camposol Club de Golf, this will be open to all who have a golf handicap, all the 18 holes have been sponsored by local businesses. More information can be obtained by emailing committee@fast2016.org TRIPS. FAST have a trip to Seville and Cordoba arranged for 29th October to the 1st November. 3 nights B&B in a 4 star hotel the Don Paco. There will be a day trip to Cordoba included, price €260 including insurance .Tickets for trips are available from our stall outside Euronics on Fridays or email, trips@fast2016.org or phone 634314379. If you would like to know more about CST/FAST or join this great team of volunteers then you can email recruitment@fast2016.org or call in to the cultural (social) centre on a Tuesday morning between 10.00 until 12.00. You will be made very welcome. We are always looking for new team members; we also need supporters to help raise funds to finance this service. So if you can give a few hours to sell raffle tickets or be a fundraiser in any way, you will be made most welcome. There is always a cup of tea or coffee on the go Tuesday mornings. We cannot provide this service without your help. FAST WORKING FOR EVERYONE ON CAMPOSOL.

“I remember being this 17year-old girl, in love and really excited about my future with the boy that I thought was going to be my husband and we’d have babies,” recalls Gwen Stefani. “Then I learned that I could write songs and that’s when my life changed.”

A California girl at heart, Gwen was born in the city of Fullerton on October 3, 1969, but grew up in nearby Anaheim with her father Dennis, mum Patti Flynn and siblings Jill, Eric and Todd. Her sassy attitude may owe something to the family’s Irish, Scottish and Italian heritage, but the pretty performer’s life wasn’t always as glamorous as it is today.

And, despite the bold, streetwise personality she is known for, the ‘Hollaback Girl’ insists she is still a hopeless softy at heart. “I’m really emotional,” she explains. “I don’t fight with people I can barely fight with my husband, because I’ll just wind up crying instead.”

The chisel-jawed musician, who was born to an Indian family in London, initially rebuffed the young chanteuse, fearing any romance could get in the way of the band’s success. “It was pretty much an unspoken rule that nobody dates Gwen,” he later recalled. “You know, you had her older brother in the band and he was real protective - it was almost like a bunch of brothers and our sister.”

Never one to rest on her laurels, even when she’s falling in love, Gwen started looking for new ways to express her creative talents. The 5ft 6in star got the chance to cut her acting teeth by playing Jean Harlow in Martin Scorsese’s Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator, and her passion for funky clothes also found an outlet with the launch of her clothing label Love Angel Music Baby in 2004.

Long before making her mark on the pop charts, she studied at California State University and took on a variety of service jobs, including a spell cleaning floors at a fast-food restaurant. Things took a dramatic turn when her brother Eric encouraged her to sing backing vocals with his band No Doubt, however. Gwen would soon become the group’s lead singer and develop a crush on its handsome bass player Tony Kanal.

They say that when one door closes another opens and just as her relationship with Tony came to an end, new opportunities began to come her way. She was backstage at a concert by the British band Bush at the time one of America’s biggest bands despite remaining relatively unknown in their home country when she first met its understated lead singer Gavin Rossdale. The rocker, who was known for his shy demeanour and good looks, soon became the new man in her life and together they became one of the A list’s most glamorous couples.

How Much does it Cost For a Ton of Logs?

There is no question that the winter months are upon us! When out walking in the evening’s one can smell the unmistakable smell of wood smoke coming from houses all around. It seems that most people are aware of the advantages of using a log burner in the winter months, but how many of us are aware about the cost versus quality aspect when purchasing firewood? We recently asked Manolo the owner of El Pareton Firewood what we should consider when ordering firewood. And he had this to say: “The most common question that we get asked when the phone rings is “How much is a ton of logs?” It’s a crazy question really.

2018

A bit like phoning a used car garage and asking how much a car is! We supply all different types and sizes of firewood, each type having its own unique qualities. Therefore the price can vary depending on the customer’s needs.” He said. “All our firewood is correctly stored throughout the winter to ensure that it loses around 20% of its humidity, making it ideal for burning. We are one of the only businesses in the area that has a custom facility dedicated to this, therefore we know that when we sell a ton of logs to a customer, not only will they get wood that will burn properly, they also get an actual ton. Some companies sell green wood from recently cut down trees, it has he extra humidity therefore is heavier and does not burn correctly. Firewood from El Pareton is sourced from a variety of locations in Murcia and in neighbouring provinces. When fruit trees have reached the end of their useful life for fruit production they are removed and new trees planted. The wood is then purchased directly by Manolo and put into storage. “We use all types of wood, but mainly Orange, Lemon, Almond, Olive and Pine. Each one burns differently. Our olive wood comes from Andalucia, and we only sell branches of olive, not the olive root. Burning the roots can be difficult and messy as they are nearly always

covered in soil. Pine wood is a lovely wood to watch burn as the dried sap sparks and produces a beautiful effect, but it is better to use it in a glass front log burner rather than open fire. Our Almond wood is very dense and is a hard, long burning wood, but needs to be mixed with other wood to burn well.” Manolo tells us that when each person calls to place an order, they are asked about the size, type and location of the log burner as this enables him to recommend the correct type of wood. “Normally we recommend a mix of the different types of wood to ensure that our customers get the best value. It’s not a simple question of “how much is a ton of logs!” No one else holds a larger stock of log in this area than us. We provide a professional service.” So it seems when it comes to stocking up on firewood this winter, there is much more to consider than simply how much a ton of logs costs. It seems that even when sending your money up in smoke, like most things in life, you only get what you pay for!

maybe a sharp suit, show me a horror film with superb CGI and I’m delirious. It probably harks back to the Lost Boys and Jacko’s ‘Thriller’ video, but may stretch even further in time to Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in black and white, and hiding behind the sofa as a kid, watching wanton women in wonderful gowns lurking the hallways of candelabra strewn castles, just waiting for a bite...

Dawn Llewellyn-Price It’s a spooky month ahead, with Halloween and its theme party run up. I don’t believe in ghouls and ghosties, but love all the accompanying clamour that comes with it. Last year I bought all sorts of fakery; teeth, hats and vials of ‘blood’ in the November sell off, ready to strut my stuff this 31st. As I’ve been roped in to do a residents association monthly quiz (a punishment for running their facebook page and being a committee member) it seems they’ll be put to good use. Give a witch a microphone and a vellum of rustling papers and Dracula’s your uncle. Luckily I’ll have Vlad the Impaler as my beautiful assistant. Vlad understands the scoring and I can talk the hind legs off an apocalyptic horseman. Being a huge fan of lycanthropes and anything else with sharp teeth and

So it appears I’m all for the macabre. I have friends who never watch anything scary. How do they get through life? Their heads are surely filled with RomComs and Poldark, with little thought of creeping around a graveyard at midnight entering their sweet dream filled fluffy heads? Or thinking those blinking red eyes under the yucca plants at 2am are anything other than actual cats. Recently, on a visit to Palermo in Scicily, a visit to the Catacombs of the Cappucini monks was on the cards. Should we, shouldnt we? Just shovel me in there. No cameras allowed unfortunately, so I had to buy a lengthy pack of fold out postcards for the memorabilia. And a book. There’s always a book. These Catacombs were possibly the ‘oddest’ experience I’ve ever had, alongside the ‘Bodyworlds’ exhibition

which was a new level of modern madness by Gunther Von Hagens, truly fascinating stuff. Imagine walls strewn with mummified bodies hanging like puppets, and floors filled with coffins containing the remains of monks, professionals, men, women, children, many of whom died of the Bubonic Plague, all enclosed in a series of tunnels, their clothing intact. There are around 8,000 remains, divided by sex and social class. Embalming took place over the course of a year, bodies drained in a closed room following removal of the internal organs, washed with vinegar or arsenic then stuffed with straw. We saw little Rosalia Lombardo, age 2, her curly blonde hair still as perfect today, following her death in 1920. Everyone walked quietly in respectful amazement. Truly sobering. I’ll be having another ‘stiff’ experience this coming winter. tirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter. To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes.

Halloween 2018 Halloween is an annual holiday celebrated each year on October 31, and Halloween 2018 occurs on Wednesday, October 31. It originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints; soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating sweet treats. Ancient Origins of Halloween Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. church-sanctioned holiday. All Souls Day was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels and devils. The All Saints Day celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints’ Day) and the night before it, the traditional night of Samhain in the Celtic religion, began to be called All-Hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Halloween Comes to America

When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

Celebration of Halloween was extremely limited in colonial New England because of the rigid Protestant belief systems there. Halloween was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies.

Did you know? One quarter of all the candy sold annually in the U.S. is purchased for Halloween.

As the beliefs and customs of different European ethnic groups as well as the American Indians meshed, a distinctly American version of Halloween began to emerge. The first celebrations included “play parties,” public events held to celebrate the harvest, where neighbors would share stories of the dead, tell each other’s fortunes, dance and sing.

By 43 A.D., the Roman Empire had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain. The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple, and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of “bobbing” for apples that is practiced today on Halloween. All Saints Day On May 13, 609 A.D., Pope Boniface IV dedicated the Pantheon in Rome in honor of all Christian martyrs, and the Catholic feast of All Martyrs Day was established in the Western church. Pope Gregory III later expanded the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs, and moved the observance from May 13 to November 1. By the 9th century the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands, where it gradually blended with and supplanted the older Celtic rites. In 1000 A.D., the church would make November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day to honor the dead. It’s widely believed today that the church was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related

Colonial Halloween festivities also featured the telling of ghost stories and mischief-making of all kinds. By the middle of the nineteenth century, annual autumn festivities were common, but Halloween was not yet celebrated everywhere in the country. In the second half of the nineteenth century, America was flooded with new immigrants. These new immigrants, especially the millions of Irish fleeing the Irish Potato Famine, helped to popularize the celebration of Halloween nationally. Trick-or-Treat Borrowing from Irish and English traditions, Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today’s “trick-or-treat” tradition. Young women believed that on Halloween they could divine the name or appearance of their future husband by doing tricks with yarn, apple parings or mirrors. In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighborly get-togethers than about ghosts, pranks and witchcraft. At

2018

the turn of the century, Halloween parties for both children and adults became the most common way to celebrate the day. Parties focused on games, foods of the season and festive costumes. Parents were encouraged by newspapers and community leaders to take anything “frightening” or “grotesque” out of Halloween celebrations. Because of these efforts, Halloween lost most of its superstitious and religious overtones by the beginning of the twentieth century. Halloween Parties By the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween had become a secular, but community-centered holiday, with parades and town-wide Halloween parties as the featured entertainment. Despite the best efforts of many schools and communities, vandalism began to plague some celebrations in many communities during this time. By the 1950s, town leaders had successfully limited vandalism and Halloween had evolved into a holiday directed mainly at the young. Due to the high numbers of young children during the fifties baby boom, parties moved from town civic centers into the classroom or home, where they could be more easily accommodated. Between 1920 and 1950, the centuries-old practice of trick-or-treating was also revived. Trick-or-treating was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration. In theory, families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats. Thus, a new American tradition was born, and it has continued to grow. Today, Americans spend an estimated $6 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country’s second largest commercial holiday after Christmas. Soul Cakes The American Halloween tradition of “trick-or-treating” probably dates back to the early All Souls’ Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called “soul cakes” in return for their promise to pray for the family’s dead relatives. The distribution of soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way

2018

to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits. The practice, which was referred to as “going a-souling” was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given ale, food and money. The tradition of dressing in costume for Halloween has both European and Celtic roots. Hundreds of years ago, winter was an uncertain and frightening time. Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter. Black Cats Halloween has always been a holiday filled with mystery, magic and superstition. It began as a Celtic end-ofsummer festival during which people felt especially close to deceased relatives and friends. For these friendly spirits, they set places at the dinner table, left treats on doorsteps and along the side of the road and lit candles to help loved ones find their way back to the spirit world. Today’s Halloween ghosts are often depicted as more fearsome and malevolent, and our customs and superstitions are scarier too. We avoid crossing paths with black cats, afraid that they might bring us bad luck. This idea has its roots in the Middle Ages, when many people believed that witches avoided detection by turning themselves into black cats. We try not to walk under ladders for the same reason. This superstition may have come from the ancient Egyptians, who believed that triangles were sacred (it also may have something to do with the fact that walking under a leaning ladder tends to be fairly unsafe). And around Halloween, especially, we try to avoid breaking mirrors, stepping on cracks

in the road or spilling salt. Halloween Matchmaking But what about the Halloween traditions and beliefs that today’s trick-or-treaters have forgotten all about? Many of these obsolete rituals focused on the future instead of the past and the living instead of the dead. In particular, many had to do with helping young women identify their future husbands and reassuring them that they would someday— with luck, by next Halloween—be married. In 18th-century Ireland, a matchmaking cook might bury a ring in her mashed potatoes on Halloween night, hoping to bring true love to the diner who found it. In Scotland, fortune-tellers recommended that an eligible young woman name a hazelnut for each of her suitors and then toss the nuts into the fireplace. The nut that burned to ashes rather than popping or exploding, the story went, represented the girl’s future husband. (In some versions of this legend, the opposite was true: The nut that burned away symbolized a love that would not last.) Another tale had it that if a young woman ate a sugary concoction made out of walnuts, hazelnuts and nutmeg before bed on Halloween night she would dream about her future husband. Young women tossed apple-peels over their shoulders, hoping that the peels would fall on the floor in the shape of their future husbands’ initials; tried to learn about their futures by peering at egg yolks floating in a bowl of water; and stood in front of mirrors in darkened rooms, holding candles and looking over their shoulders for their husbands’ faces. Other rituals were more competitive. At some Halloween parties, the first guest to find a burr on a chestnuthunt would be the first to marry; at others, the first successful applebobber would be the first down the aisle. Of course, whether we’re asking for romantic advice or trying to avoid seven years of bad luck, each one of these Halloween superstitions relies on the goodwill of the very same “spirits” whose presence the early Celts felt so keenly.

Looking after your solar system

Any solar system is an investment so it is important to maintain it to ensure it keeps working hard, safely and efficiently. As well as keeping the panels clean, it is crucial to check and maintain any electrical components, safety valves etc. It is recommended that you have your

solar system maintained once a year by a solar technician. However, since recent studies have found that dust build-up does have a significant effect on efficiency of the solar system so here are some tips on how you can maintain and clean your solar panel(s) yourself.

Safety First. Depending where your solar system is located, getting access can be dangerous. Without the right gear and experience you could put yourself at risk. Follow guidelines. Depending on your system, the manufacturer may have specific guidelines or recommendations for panel cleaning.

Avoid damaging or scratching the glass. Never walk on the panels and do not use harsh or abrasive materials as cracks or scratches affect the performance and efficiency of the system by impacting the light that passes through the surface of the panels.

If you don’t yet have a solar system and would like to join those who are already saving money by using the sun’s energy contact us at Free-Sol Solar – martin.freeman@freesol.com.

Morning or late afternoon is the best time to clean the panels as during the day they can become extremely hot. Water is generally all that is required to remove dust so if you use your garden hose, you may wish to dry the panels afterwards with a soft cloth to avoid residue build-up. Alternatively you can use purified water but panels should not be cleaned with a pressure washer as this may crack the glass.

A unique opportunity to see the inspirational and spiritual artwork of local artist, Annette Ryder The Art Goddess

at Jane´s Salon, Calle Antonio Segado Olmo, Bolnuevo Monday 22nd October 7 till 9.30.pm

For more details please contact Annette via e mail at annetteryderes@gmail.com LOCAL ARTIST follows her dream……… My name is Annette Ryder and I´m an artist! It´s taken me a long time to be able to stand up and say that. In fact, it has been over 50 years!! Now I am embarking on a solo exhibition of my artwork under the banner of The Art Goddess. On Monday October 22nd from 7 until 9.30. pm you are invited to view a selection of my paintings at Jane´s Hair Salon in Bolnuevo. As a child I loved to draw and paint, and of course when you are little nobody judges or criticises what you produce. As you get older you start to compare your efforts with those of your friends, and I thought I was pretty good. However, at the age of eleven I met an art teacher who had very negative views on my abilities and bluntly told me that I was wasting my time and suggested I take up a different subject. I was devastated but as she was the ¨expert¨ I thought that this must be the case. She did in fact fail the whole class in the end of term Art exam so I think that there may have been a few other students who had their abilities savagely criticised. Looking back, as an ex teacher myself, it tells me more about her lack of teaching skills than anything else. Anyway, I left her class! Jumping forward some 30 years I gave myself a second chance at art by by completing a General Art and Design course as a mature student at a local art college. On this fabulous course I regained my confidence and learnt so much. Since living in Spain I have spent time experimenting with my art and working with different mediums and developing what is now ‘my style’. My exhibition is spiritual in nature, often inspired by meditations. I have come full circle and am back to enjoying the process. It´s never too late to follow your dream. I would love it if you could come and see the results.

Camposol ‘C’ Green Fingers Gardening and Social Group

Autumn is well on the way now and we have already had heavy thunderstorms and showers, but they have been followed by lovely sunny days and cooler nights - the perfect growing weather for weeds! Good weather for transplanting any overgrown or unwanted shrubs or plants too, which you might like to donate to us from your garden? Our team will come and move them to a place where they can grow for everyone to enjoy or they can be left behind the ‘Welcome to C’ wall. Thanks to all of you for those plant donations received so far. Our Maintenance team continue the rota of weeding, cleaning and spraying this month as part of the continual programme covering all streets of C Sector North. They have also cleared a large amount of silt and stones from our streets after the heavy downpours, to make sure all were clear and the roads safe for passing traffic. This month the Volunteers have spent many hours watering, trimming trees and shrubs and the inevitable weeding! We also filled two dangerous potholes on Sector B with concrete. We’d like to welcome back Project Manager Ken, we also appeal to any more of you who would like to join our Wednesday morning volunteers, either on a regular or occasional basis; you will be rewarded with a free breakfast! Contact us if you can spare a bit of time and energy, or just turn up at 9am at the Welcome Wall at the bottom of the dual carriageway and help improve our area while making new friends in the process! Just get in touch with Graham, our Chairman on 604 253 604. All the effort means ‘C’ is looking better each year, also because of the donations you generously give, either regularly to our scheme or in the buckets; thank you. Your guide to the poisonous plants lurking in the average garden on the Costa Calida Growing the perfect garden on the Costa Calida. If you are buying a property in Spain with a garden, there will be many new and unusual plants growing both wild and cultivated in garden centres for you to fill it with. There have been cases

poison is poorly absorbed, so its effects are rarely seen.

over the years here where ill informed foreigners have put cuttings from oleander plants from their garden on the barbecue and have been poisoned - and in some cases killed, by the toxic fumes and chemicals that were absorbed into the food. Many trees and plants are poisonous, and a hazard not only for adults but for inquisitive youngsters who are always putting things in their mouths. Naturallyoccurring poisons are concentrated in seeds and berries but leaves, flowers, sap and roots can contain a considerable amount. As a general rule, unripe fruits are more dangerous than ripe ones. Oleander bushes are extremely common here on the Costa Blanca. Many garden boundaries are drawn with a neat row of the evergreen and colourful plant. You also see miles of oleander bushes along the central reservation of motorways here. It is hardy and easy to cultivate and very attractive. But it is a killer if ingested. The first thing a doctor will need to know is what and how much of the poisonous plant was eaten, when it was eaten, and what part of the plant was consumed. They will also need to know how old the patient is and whether they have already vomited after eating the plant. If possible, save what remains of the plant that was eaten and let the doctor or hospital see it for identification purposes as there are specific antidotes to certain plant poisons. Laurel Garden plants that cause problems include laurel leaves and their black-currantlooking berries, both of which contain derivatives of cyanide. Lily of the Valley flowers and berries contain a chemical which affects the rhythm of the heart, but fortunately the

Other common culprits include Laburnum — whether in the form of seeds or bright yellow flowers — which contains a chemical that poisons in the same way as nicotine; wisteria pods, which bring on gastroenteritis, and lupin pods, which cause vomiting and convulsions. Aconite (monkshood) is the most poisonous plant in Europe and it can kill. Few people realise that rhododendron seeds produce urinary and gastroenteritis symptoms, such as pain when passing water, diarrhoea and vomiting. Poppies contain over 100 different kinds of addictive drugs, the most powerful being the basic derivatives of morphine and codeine. As it is now well known, the pretty blue flowers of morning glory conceal the drug LSD, which produces horrific hallucinations. Away from the garden and into the countryside, yew seeds are dangerous — even lethal if chewed, while holly berries act as a purgative. nightshade isn’t as bad as its name suggests — at least 10 or 12 berries are needed to produce diarrhoea, headaches and abdominal pain but still should not be eaten. The fox-glove — famous for giving us the drug digitalis for heart failure and slowing the heart rate — is not good for healthy hearts. Even the benign sounding buttercup should be avoided, as it belongs to the same family as monkshood and can cause blistering of the mouth, colic and diarrhoea. Funghi such as wild mushrooms and toadstools are not often toxic if they are cooked as the poisons are broken down by heat, but problems can arise if they are eaten raw. But the best protection against plant poisoning is knowing what is dangerous and educating your children. The following plants or plant parts are toxic when ingested, and those marked with asterisks* are especially dangerous.

Health &Wellbeing

LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE!! Are YOU Living YOUR Best Life? The cost of Ill health Most people are under the wrong impression that maintaining wellness is expensive. In fact, if you look at what it costs you to be ill, you will realise that nothing could be further from the truth! For some reason people mainly men, spend more money on maintaining their motorised vehicles (cars, vans, motorbikes, or scooters) than the very vehicle they have been given for life – namely their body. Whereas women tend to spend more on keeping their vehicles for life (their body) looking good! Never mind how they may be feeling! Having their hair or nails done, or spending on beautifying treatments, helps with that ……….temporarily! The body also comes with a mind and for some reason to seek help because of ‘mind matters’ for example, worries, anxiety, stress or depression seems to be even more taboo. What many people do not realise is that any stresses or concerns of the mind ultimately affect the physical body, especially if they are not addressed and are just ‘pushed under the carpet’. Stress and anxiety eat away at you from the inside, along with a range of negative emotions, perhaps even more so. This can have an adverse effect on mental health. Mental health is extremely important, it affects ALL of us, WE ALL have it: if ignored the cumulative effects of negativity can be disastrous. The cumulative effects can and indeed do,

affect people in a number of ways and often result in some form of self-abuse. Two main ways that spring to mind concern food – either over eating or under eating (either way the body and internal organs are affected) and alcohol. One thing is for sure you will never find the answer to your problem at the bottom of a bottle! And, whilst it is great to have a friend to talk with and to confide in sometimes more help is needed. Consider this, let’s say you are emotionally upset and do not seek help. You begin to withdraw from your partner, your friends: you find solace in food – junk food, cakes, biscuits, chocolate and maybe even alcohol. Over time your friends stop offering you help because you do not accept it as you do not think you are worth it, - your relationship breaks down. You find that physically your body starts to break down too – you have gained an excessive amount of weight, your hips, knees and ankles start to ache, you become too large to enjoy exercise – even the dancing you used to enjoy. You ‘beat’ yourself up more and more, you lose confidence and your selfesteem takes a battering. You withdraw even more. You eat and drink to excess even more: your internal organs begin to break down. You are back and forth to the doctors, this hurts that hurts.Your emotions are all over the place. You end up going to the hospital for tests and more tests. You are admitted to hospital. You end up having an operation maybe even two. It is possible that you may not leave the hospital as your body gives up altogether. Sounds scary? It is. What has it cost

you to not seek help in the first place? Some things you cannot put a monetary value on. What’s the alternative? Imagine this: you have a worry or an issue you cannot discuss with your partner or a good friend. You seek help and receive regular support and guidance in resolving whatever it is that has been causing you stress. You begin to feel happier, lighter in mind and may be even in body.Your family and friends notice a new contentment within you and want to share more time with you.Your relationship with your partner is more relaxed and your relationship goes from strength to strength. You feel and exude happiness and contentment, life is good!! At what cost? Some time, some effort and some euros.Very little in comparison. There are many techniques that you can learn to help to maintain a healthy mind and body and therefore to look after yourself thus lessening costs. EFT is one such incredible tool. (EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique). It is so simple that people

often misunderstand how effective it can be. The number of times clients have said to me following a session or series of sessions whereby their condition has improved significantly; “How can something so simple work so well? It’s amazing!” It is my view that as human beings (the alleged most intelligent species on this planet), we have developed a tendency to overcomplicate things, all things. One of the ways in which we do this is to over analyse. Over analysing can cause all sorts of problems especially where mental or psychological health is concerned. Take anxiety for example, (and by the way, anxiety is within us all as it forms part of our innate safety mechanism), has its good points as well as its bad ones. If you are a natural worrier worrying about things is not going to help matters. Nonetheless you continue and become anxious, this anxiety becomes a perpetuating circle to the point where you become anxious about becoming anxious or having an anxiety attack, thereby complicating matters and guess what? You become even more anxious!

Now let’s look how this process can be simplified. You know you are a worrier. You know you worry about things perhaps too much. Before anxiety sets in you seek the help of a qualified EFT practitioner. You come away feeling less worried, and what’s more, you have come away with a simple technique that you can use to help yourself when you know you are worrying. By using this technique you are able to deal with whatever you are worrying about in a different way! So, the question to ask right now is would you rather spend money on your ill health or your wellness? Only YOU can answer that….and I guess that all depends on whether you do indeed have a desire to Live Your Best Life! Drew Ryder is a Mindset Coach, Personal Wellness Practitioner, Transformational Coach, Energy Psychologist,

Advanced EFT Practitioner, Reiki Master and Trainer of The Balance Procedure. He uses all his skills intuitively and with humour, including NLP and Counselling. He works from a heart-based, solution and action orientated perspective, so you will be inspired and motivated to put insights and solutions into action to enable you to become the best that you can be so you can indeed, Live Your Best Life!

Summer Heat is cooling off. On 29th August, members and guests arrived at Lorca Golf Resort to find a course in excellent condition, with fairways and greens better than we have seen for many a day. Compliments must go to all the staff there for its condition, especially through the hot summer months. The day started with sunshine and light winds, so scoring was relatively easy, although some members find crossing the ravines on this course quite a test of driving skills. Later in the morning the breeze strengthened, and shots became a little more difficult, but returns at the 19th hole, showed that most people had enjoyed the day.

The first rounds of the annual Club Championships in nine categories are being played and as we go to print the Mazarron Trophy in a 3-2-1 format is being hotly contested by the Members. summer months now paying off, some surprising results are emerging from hot competition across the board. Case in point – Keith Miller joined as a rookie to the game in March, took to it like a duck to water and worked like a Trojan to improve under guidance, went back to UK in July, joined his local Club Cowpen and Croften B.C. in Blyth, and promptly won his first ever competition with Men’s Pairs partner Bryan Turner to lift his first ever trophy! There are other new Members showing the same sort of progress which says a lot for the coaching by their mentors and even more for the enthusiasm of these new Members.

The Club is represented in two inter club leagues in the region. The Mazarron Mariners team plays on Mondays in the South Alicante League and start their programme away from home against Vistabella Eagles on 15th October. As winners of the Voyager Division last season the team are now promoted to the Discovery Division and anticipate some stiff opposition this time round. The Mazarron Miners team plays on Fridays in the LLB Southern League and have just newly been relegated by a narrow margin from Division A to Division B of the topmost league in Spain. Their first fixture is at home to San Luis Leopards on 5th October when the team will be keen to put down their marker for promotion back to Division A. Captain Jim Coughlan’s intention is to give an opportunity to play in a team to all Members wishing to play competitively at inter-club level while yet assuring that teams selected each week are up for the challenge. The usual coach load of Los Amigos supporters made the long trip to Yecla for the away game against Yeclano Deportivo on Sunday 16th September. It was a very long day out with the first pick up at 12.15 pm and not arriving back in Camposol until around 9.30 pm. There was the usual stop for lunch at the Restaurante Media Luna just outside Jumilla for a most enjoyable Menu Especial accompanied by plenty of soft (or alcoholic) drinks before continuing to the game at Yecla. There are still some tickets left for the annual Los Amigos de Mazarron FC President’s Bash which this year will be held at the Diner, Camposol B on Wednesday 10th October, 7 pm for 7.30 pm. Admission is by ticket only priced €10 for members and €12 for nonmembers which includes supper and musical entertainment from the Geckos. You can buy tickets at the weekly Los Amigos meetings at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf (Thursdays at 4 pm) or email pamada.1130@yahoo. co.uk. Tickets are already selling really quickly for the 10th Los Amigos de Mazarron FC Gala Evening and Dinner. The event is again being sponsored by

Ibex Insurance and the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf to whom we are most grateful for their continued support. The Dinner will take place at the Hotel la Cumbre, Puerto de Mazarron on Tuesday 26th March 2019. Among our celebrity guests this year we have our two very first guest speakers, Dave Bassett and Jan Molby. Steve Daley, Steve Kindon and Alex Stepney are also returning to help us celebrate this very special occasion along with our UK Ambassador Tony Currie, former Aston Villa star Chico Hamilton and Peter Reeves, formerly of Charlton Athletic and England Under 23. We also hope that two of our other regular celebrity guests, former speaker Alvin Martin, and Mark Higgins will be able to join us as well. Comedian Gary Marshall will again be in attendance to act as Master of Ceremonies and to invite a number of our celebrities to share some of their experiences in football with us. Towards the end of the evening Woody will entertain us and allow the ladies to enjoy the last hour and a half or so dancing the night away. Steve Daley was our guest speaker back in 2013 and continues to entertain audiences throughout Great Britain with his after dinner tales of his life as a professional footballer which have won him awards for his after-dinner speeches. He was transferred from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Manchester City in September 1979 for a then record English transfer fee of just under £1.5 million, a transfer which has since seen him described as the biggest waste of money in football history!! Tickets, which include a five course meal with local beer, house wine and soft drinks included during the serving of dinner are €50. They are on sale at the weekly Los Amigos Meetings or you can email salterkb@hotmail.com. We will also be holding a Celebrity Golf Day at the Camposol Club de Golf the previous day, Monday 25th March. Tramway Financial Management will again be sponsoring the Golf Day at which many of the visiting celebrities will be taking part. Full details will be announced in next month’s edition. Los Amigos de Mazarron FC hold weekly meetings throughout the football and new members are very welcome. Social meetings take place every Thursday at the Club House, Camposol Club de Golf at 4 pm. General meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month when only members are allowed to attend. Membership is €20 with numerous discounts available on most social events and coach travel. Ferrari unveils the new £1million Monza: Its most powerful road car ever with no roof and the option of having one or two seats The Monza was shown to exclusive guests at a behind-closed-doors event before being revealed on Tuesday It will be sold in a choice of two variants: a Monza SP1 single seater or an SP2 two-seat option It will be based on the Ferrari 812 Superfast and use the same 6.5-litre V12 engine - just 500 will be made With 810hp it’s officially the most powerful road car Ferrari has ever released, capable of 0-62mph in 2.9secs After images of Ferrari’s new limitedrun supercar, called the Monza, were leaked online, the iconic Italian brand has releases official shots of the ultraexclusive model. And it’s one hell of a showstopper. Photos and video taken on Tuesday at a behind-closed-doors event for the Italian manufacturer’s most loyal customers previewed the new machine’s extreme design that’s crafted around the shape of racing cars from the 1950s.

evening. The company said the car will be aimed at the brand’s ‘dedicated clients and collectors’ and will hark back to the iconic Ferrari racing barchettas of the past, including the 1948 166 MM and the 750 and 860 Monza.

Just 500 will reportedly be built and cost in excess of £1million each. The SP1 is said to be designed as an ‘uncompromising single-seat road car’ while the SP2 extends that package to include a passenger.

But instead of those grainy smartphone shots, these are the beautiful pictures released by Ferrari. It confirmed that two variants will be available - the SP1, with a single-seat layout, and a two-seat SP2 version, both of which will cost over £1million, come with no roof and feel like an F1 car to drive. Having been first shown at a private viewing held at Ferrari’s headquarters, more details about the limited-edition supercar were released on Tuesday

The second configuration also get the addition of a second protective screen and a second roll-bar. It will be powered by the most potent engine the Maranello outfit has ever made available for the road - an 810hp 6.5-litre V12, which is an upgraded version of the same motor used in the existing 812 Superfast. That’s more horsepower than the 6.3-litre V12 engine in the LaFerrari hypercar, which produces 800hp (though combined with the electric motor the hybrid produces an unmatched 963hp). That means it will accelerate at a lightening pace, hitting 62mph from a standstill in just 2.9 seconds. The 124mph mark is smashed in just 7.9 seconds, Ferrari states. As for the top speed, though unconfirmed, it is likely to exceed the 211mph maximum of the 812 Superfast. This is mainly thanks to the Monza weighing in significantly lighter than the model it’s based on - in part because it has no roof at all. Ferrari confirmed the entirety of the bodywork is carbon fibre, while the chassis is said to be aluminium to make it as flyweight as possible. The Italian supercar builder said the

form of the vehicle is based around an aerodynamic wing profile, with the complete absence of a roof and windscreen allowing the design team to create some incredible angles. The result of an exposed cabin also creates a blistering feeling of speed Ferrari says is ‘normally only experienced by Formula 1 drivers’. Up front, the low-slung nose is similar to a 1950s racer, while the rear is a simple design with a full-width light bar and quad exhaust outlets. The flanks of the Monza taper dramatically towards the rear, exposing a pair of haunched wheel arches at the back.

Property, Financial and Legal Barcelona, Valencia and Málaga are reacting to unprecedented demand for city centre rentals Following my recent review of the changes to Madrid’s tourist rental regulations this post covers Barcelona, Valencia and Málaga. All of them are getting tougher, even to the extent of outright bans in some locations. The end result is that a property buyer considering a purchase in one of these locations might need to rethink their buying plans if rental income is part of the strategy. I’ve commented in detail on the reasons why Spain’s A-list city destinations are trying to limit tourist rentals in the city centres here: A review of the holiday rental clampdown in Spanish cities starting with Madrid but a brief recap would include issues such as: Local residents are being squeezed out of city centres as long term rental stock reduces. Affordability – rental and sale prices shooting up as tourist rental investors move in. Noise and tenant churn.

Local politicians getting a clear message to sort it out. In one sense these issues are a sign of the strength of Spain’s tourism sector. In the decade since the 2008 recession Spain’s overseas tourists rose from 59m in 2007 to 82m in 2017. Spain is now the second most visited country in the world, just behind France. The rise in visitor numbers to Spanish cities is also a sign of a maturing tourism sector showcasing what Spain offers in addition to the typical beach market. For far too long that’s what Spain’s tourism sector concentrated on but they have now realised there is a big market

for cultural tourism as well and these visitors head for the cities. One result is that rental yields in city centres have become very attractive for property

BARCELONA owners. But this growth brings problems. Spain’s cities are relatively small in area and the historic centres where visitors want to stay become saturated with tourists and local residents feel crowded out. Another issue is that city tourism is a year-round market, that’s why the rental yields are so good. There is no low season so there is no respite. Disruption for a couple of months in summer is bearable if everyone goes home in September but Spanish cities are just as packed in winter as in summer. So the conundrum facing the most visited cities is how to get the balance right. How the economic benefits of more visitors, who typically spend more per night on average than the summer beach holiday visitor, can be balanced against what residents will tolerate in terms of increased noise and disruption to their daily lives. Different places have different requirements, some locations are overwhelmed while others don’t have a problem. These differences were behind the 2013 decision by central government to devolve legislative responsibility to the autonomous regions so they could come up with rules that best suited them. But even prior to 2013 several regions already had some controls in place; of the main tourism regions only Andalucía had no controls on the short term holiday market at all. But Cataluña, Mallorca, Valencia and the Canary Islands all did and it seems to me that the main reason some cities in these regions now have problems is that enforcement of those laws was non-existent. Now they are playing catch-up. There’s no doubt that the emergence of portals such as Airbnb and Homeaway led to the rapid expansion of tourist rentals but with increased visibility it is also much easier for the authorities to see who is doing what. Not only

are there fines for non-compliant individuals, up to €300,000 in some regions, big fines have been imposed on both Airbnb and Homeaway for allowing unlicensed properties to be listed and in theory it should now be impossible for owners to list a property unless they have a licence number. And tax avoidance is much easier to spot as once a property has its rental licence that information is shared with Hacienda. Already the city with most controls, Barcelona has plans to go further. Earlier fines against Airbnb and Homeaway seem to have had some effect with an estimated 2,500 unlicensed properties taken down but still about 40% of listed properties are thought to be illegal. Barcelona town hall created four zones moving outwards from city centre. There is now a permanent freeze in Zone 1, covering Cuitat Vella, parts of Eixample and Poblenou, Vila Olímpica, Pole Sec, Hostalfrancs and Sant Antoni. No new licenses will be issued in this zone even when a licence expires. In Zone 2 a new license will only be granted if one has expired, so numbers will stay the same. The only areas where limited growth will be allowed are Zones 3 and 4 but these are further away from the city centre, less likely to attract to the typical tourist who wants to be on top of the action. Several new ideas are up for future discussion. One is to fine owners who evict long term tenants solely to switch to the short term market. Another is to force developers of new projects to allocate 30% of the project to affordable rentals and finally, fines of up to €60,000 on owners who rent out unlicensed rooms in their principal residence. Valencia El Cabañal District, Valencia, where buy-to-let investors in the city are close

to 40% of the market Compared with Barcelona’s 32 million visitors in 2017, Valencia’s total of 2m seems insignificant but, driven by growing local discontent and a desire to act before things are out of control, restrictions are increasing. So, no new licences will be approved in the Ciutat Vella part of the city centre while in other areas only ground and first floor properties will be licensed. Owners will be required to obtain a report from the town hall authorising use of the property for tourist rentals and then apply for a licence number. The city is also going after the online portals with fines and has raised the maximum to €600,000. Comments from Tourism and Town Hall sources imply that the situation is not yet seen as a concern apart from a few specific zones but by taking action now they hope to prevent the problem escalating. Malaga City Málaga is the new boy on the block and by far the smallest market with 1.3m tourists staying in the city in 2017. It’s also the least regulated and only requires owners to apply for a licence number and meet the required standards. As yet, there are no restricted zones. This law came into effect in May 2016 and already around 3,500 properties in the city have legal status with a licence number and the list is available online so visitors can check if the apartment they are renting is legal. The council has also set up a telephone hotline for the public to report suspected illegal properties. However, although it is a much smaller market it is growing strongly and in 2017 had the highest growth in tourist number of any city in Spain. Already the same issues are emerging, particularly evictions and rising rents, noise and

disruption. While there are no definite new proposals in the pipeline the mayor is on record as saying the tourist rental market is being watched closely and they won’t hesitate to impose more controls if necessary. And owners themselves can also take action and there are already buildings in Málaga (and other cities as well) in which the community of owners have voted to change the statutes and ban tourists lets completely.

Licence of first Occupation The Licence of First Occupancy (LFO, for short) is a crucial document on buying off-plan property in Spain that draws a line between what is legal and what is not, in general terms. A LFO does not (usually) apply to resalee properties. This article is just a stub, a short summary. If you fancy an in-depth take on this topic, you can read our 2005/2009 breakdown: Licence of First Occupation. Definition A Licence of First Occupation is a certificate issued by a town hall which confirms that a newly-built property (off-

plan) fully complies with all planning and building regulations and is fit to be used as a dwelling. It assures compliance with Health, Access, Safety, Planning and Construction laws, and that the property has been fully completed, with no outstanding works. The LFO allows off-plan purchasers to dwell in a property legally. A LFO is also known as Habitation Licence or Certificate of Habitation and in Spanish, Licencia de Primera Ocupación or Cédula de Habitabilidad. LFO importance It is important mainly for four reasons: It provides a check on the planning legality. A LFO means the developer has built the dwelling in accordance with the original town hall’s Building Licence as well as with all Planning laws. The inspection to grant this licence is carried out by town hall’s chartered technicians who certify that the dwelling is deemed apt for human habitation. It is required by utility companies to have access to official supplies: water, electricity and gas. Spanish law requires the granting of the LFO to hook up the dwelling to the supply grid.

Lenders will ask for it if you require finance. Banks will also be asking you for a LFO. Even on reselling the property, your buyer may request a copy for his own lender. Holiday lettings. If you are looking to buy as an investment (buy-to-let), a LFO is required by Regional Tourist Authorities to rent out your place on a short-term. If your property hasn’t attained a first occupancy licence, you will not be able to legally rent out your house and may be landed with humongous fines if caught red-handed. The fines for non-compliance are six-figures in some regions of Spain. Conclusion Be wary of anyone downplaying the importance of a LFO on off-plan property claiming it is unnecessary. In general, I advise you not to complete without a Licence of First Occupation. By Raymundo Larraín Nesbitt Director of Larraín Nesbitt Lawyers

Q: Why is a cemetery a great place to write a story? A: Because there are so many plots there! Three men want to become agents for the FBI. After a day of intensive interviews, they are told there is one more test to prove their dedication to the FBI. The head FBI agent takes the first guy into a private room. He hands him a gun and says, “Go into that room and kill your wife.” The guy says, “No way” and leaves FBI headquarters. The second guy goes through the same proceedings. He walks into the second room, but on seeing his wife decides that she is worth more than a good job and he too refuses. Finally, the third guy is given the gun and told to kill his wife. He walks into the second room and six shots are heard. A few seconds later, the head FBI agent hears crashing and banging from the room. After a few minutes, the guy comes out of the room. “What happened?” asks the FBI agent. “Some idiot loaded the gun with blanks. I had to kill her with the chair!” A plane is on its way to toronto , when a blonde in economy class gets up and moves to the first class section and sits down. The flight attendant watches

her do this and asks to see her ticket. She then tells the blonde that she paid for economy class and that she will have to sit in the back. The blonde replies, “i’m blonde, i’m beautiful, i’m going to toronto and i’m staying right here.” The flight attendant goes into the cockpit and tells the pilot and the co-pilot that there is a blonde bimbo sitting in first class, that belongs in economy and won’t move back to her seat. The co-pilot goes back to the blonde and tries to explain that because she only paid for economy she will have to leave and return to her seat. The blonde replies, “i’m blonde, i’m beautiful, i’m going to toronto and i’m staying right here.” The co-pilot tells the pilot that he probably should have the police waiting when they land to arrest this blonde woman who won’t listen to reason.

A man is lying in bed in the hospital wearing an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose. A young student nurse appears and gives him a partial sponge bath. “Nurse,”’ he mumbles from behind the mask, “are my testicles black?” Embarrassed, the young nurse replies, “I don’t know, Sir. I’m only here to wash your upper body and feet.” He struggles to ask again, “Nurse, please check for me. Are my testicles black?” Concerned that he might elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worrying about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers. She raises his gown, holds his manhood in one hand and his testicles gently in the other. She looks very closely and says, “There’s nothing wrong with them, Sir. They look fine.” The man slowly pulls off his oxygen mask, smiles at her, and says very slowly, “Thank you very much. That was wonderful. Now listen very, very closely: Are - my - test - results back?”

The pilot says, “you say she is a blonde? I’ll Handle this, i’m married to a blonde. I speak blonde.” He goes back to the blonde and whispers in her ear, and she says, “oh, i’m sorry.” And gets up and goes back to her seat in economy. The flight attendant and copilot are amazed and asked him what he said to make her move without any fuss.

earnings go towards the animals.please remember we are probably the only local charity where EVERY CENT GOES TO THE ANIMALS .... WE ARE ALL VOLUNTEERS. NO ONE IS PAID . Thinking of goods, as always I will be on the B sector carpark every Monday between 11:30 -1:30 collecting unwanted goods Hello and welcome to this Month’s write up. Where do I begin, last month if you remember we were dealing with German Shepherd dogs getting into the golf complex in Fuente Álamo the update is that we found the owner of them and they have been reunited. The dogs are.now chipped so should they get out again we will know where to go!!!! However we have two more pups , GSD cross Masting , Tia and Tammy that need a forever home. Tia

We also took in a mixed breed girl this month who was heavily pregnant. Found by a Spanish family in Roldan area and was surviving on scraps being thrown to her by the neighbors!!! she had a week or so with us before delivering 9 puppies , sadly 2 died ,the remaining 7 are beautiful and doing very well , (white pups with black spots,) if you haven’t already done so check the pics on our Facebook page. Tammy Well that brings me to my passion, Donkeys. We were contacted by a Spanish family who could not manage anymore to care for a small donkey named Platero. We spoke for a while until it was obvious that they wanted the best for him and relinquish him into our care . Arrangements were made for his collection from san Javier Moma and her 3 month old foal . In the meantime a woman near Denia also contacted us about a family of three, male female and a three month old foal that needed our help People take on these donkeys , why I’ll never know, they need such a lot of care not to mention money for food ,farrier , bedding and vets !!! Yes there cute ... but taking on a donkey is a huge commitment , AND you must be registered . So after another long conversation with them and yes you guessed it another three came in under our umbrella.
