Area Memorial Day Programs

Kewaskum

The public is invited to share in Kewaskum’s longstanding tradition of holding a Memorial Day ceremony.

This year’s Memorial Day program will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 28, outside the American Legion Hall, 1538 Fond du Lac Ave. in Kewaskum.

There will be no parade this year, because of construction occurring at Kewaskum High School.

However, the public is encouraged to still take part in the regular ceremony at the Legion Hall, which will include speakers and a 21-gun salute.

Immediately following the program, members of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 384 of Kewaskum will serve hamburgers, brats and refreshments.

Fillmore

The public is invited to a Memorial Day Program in Fillmore on Monday, May 28.

The annual Memorial Day Program in Fillmore

will include the exhibit “A Face for Every Name.”

The exhibit features a photo for every Vietnam veteran from Wisconsin who is remembered on the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. The Fillmore Turner Hall, located at 523 Highway H, just 3.5 miles east of Highway 144 north of West Bend, will be open for viewing the exhibit at 11 a.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28.

The traditional Memorial Day Program will begin in Turner Hall at 12:30 p.m. Refreshments, brats and burgers will be available beginning at 11 a.m.

Andrew Johnson, publisher of the Kewaskum Statesman, The Campbellsport News and the Dodge County Pionier, will share his story of working with community newspapers to locate the photos for the memorial. He has been recognized by the National Newspaper Association for his work on the project. Johnson, whose son David was killed in 2012 in Afghanistan, is a Gold Star Father, and is committed to having a face for the all veterans on the Memorial.

The Farmington Historical Society is sponsoring the event. The traveling exhibit is made available by the Wisconsin Veterans Museum.

Honoring Their Service & Sacrifice May 28

Memorial Day is a day to remember. It is a day for the living to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the military service for our great country. It is also a time we remember those veterans who served and have passed away. The pages of our Memorial Day section feature many of the local soldiers who were killed in action (KIA), as well as many veterans who are buried locally.

Memorial Day is for all sacrifices made since the founding of our country. It seems to be easier to recognize KIA’s who were sacrificed in years close to the time when family members as well as others are still living.

For example, during the time of the Civil War, people in this area thought about their recent sacrifices from here. We don’t think of those same sacrifices the same way since we personally did not know the soldiers and their families.

However, our country is still at war against

terrorists in several different parts of the world.

Military sacrifices are still being made even recently. Wisconsin has lost more than 300 military members since 9-11 including those from combat, suicide and accidents.

We were fortunate that we did not have to add any local names to the list in our section over the past year from our area. All who sacrificed are important to remember even if they lived in a different time or we did not know them.

Memorial Day certainly can be very personal for those of us who lost someone close.

I was able to visit the traveling Global War on Terror Wall of Remembrance this past year.

It was eye-opening to see the huge list of nearly 7,000 names representing the U.S. military KIA’s since September. To say “7,000” names is easy to understand. Reading almost 7,000 names is very difficult to comprehend. Their sacrifices become more personal.

Adding a photo like we are doing with the Vietnam Faces project makes the sacrifices even more personal. Each name represents a person who had a life and left behind family, friends and battle buddies.

The folks who run the wall gave me a challenge coin in honor of my son David. On the back of the coin it appropriately quotes John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for a friend.”

No loss in the military is greater than another. All are equally important. It is my hope that readers will take the time to look at the local photos of those who gave all as well as the names of those who have passed on and served our great country on these special pages.

Each will have a different perspective on what this holiday means based on their life experiences and a host of other factors. For example, a battle buddy’s view of their fallen co-worker differs from gold star parents who have lost a child.

Memorial Day can be a day of grieving for some. It certainly is a day to ponder the idea that a huge price was paid for us to be free and live the way we do.

Memorial Day is every day for me.

Update On The Gold Star Memorial Trail

It was approximately four years ago that an effort began to build a bike trail between Mayville and Horicon. Raising funds for such a project can be challenging. My wife Laura and I, as well as another Gold Star family from Beaver Dam, Greg and Barb Gassen, learned about the trail. We offered an idea that the trail could be dedicated to the memory of all Wisconsin service members who gave their lives. The rest is history.

The trail was renamed and adopted by the county as a park. Funding for the first phase was completed earlier this year by the county and groundbreaking for the first phase

occurred on February 27 in Mayville.

The trail construction is now at least 37 percent complete and the contractor is working ahead of schedule with a goal of having rock base work completed in July. Paving could happen as early as the end of September.

Contract completion date is November 11, which happens to be Veterans Day. It is hoped that the annual Turkey Run held on Thanksgiving morning will be held on the new trail this year. The official grand opening ceremony will be held on June 1, 2019, which is the Saturday after Memorial Day 2019 and State Trails Day.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Faces Project And The Traveling Wisconsin Exhibit

Everyone has different life circumstances and talents that can enable them to make a positive difference in their family, community, job and county.

My circumstance is very unique. After my son David was killed in Afghanistan in 2012, I really had to take a hard look at what the rest of my life would look like. Life would be different. I had no choice about what happened on the battle field.

After some time of reflection, I realized in January 2013 that the combination of my being a Gold Star father and a small, well-connected rural newspaper publisher could enable me to help the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) Faces project.

The VVMF are the folks who built the black WALL in Washington D.C. with the names of those who died in military service in the Vietnam War. I learned that Wisconsin Public Radio (WPRT) were helping the VVMF find the photos of every person that was listed on the WALL. The photos are featured online at vvmf.org and are featured daily by date of birth. The photos will also be displayed at the new education center which will located by the WALL. The reason the military did not have photos was because of a huge fire in St. Louis in 1973 that destroyed more than six million military records.

The only way to get the photos was to go to the public and families of the fallen. I further learned that the VVMF would be displaying photos of all military KIA’s from the current War on Terror until an appropriate memorial could be built in Washington D.C. It was a no brainer for me to get involved.

These people need my help and they are going to honor my son along with nearly 7,000 others who have made the ultimate sacrifice since 911.

I have a unique set of contacts and skills that could make a positive difference for remembering our fallen in Vietnam. So, this has become one of the passions of my life and that is why I will continue to feature the project every Memorial Day edition until the entire project is done.

When we started working with the VVMF Project, the numbers of missing photos were huge. At the time, there were over 58,000 (the number grows every year as discoveries are made) names on the WALL and 1,161 were from Wisconsin.

There was a total of approximately 24,000 photos missing from across the country and 450 missing from Wisconsin. I immediately gained the support for the project of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association (WNA),I was immediate past president at the time, and the National Newspaper Association (NNA), when I was a board member.

Beth Bennett, WNA executive director, and I met with WPRT executives from and shared our idea of using community newspapers to find the missing photos. They thought it was a good idea, but warned us we would not really find all of the photos and the project would go on for many years in Wisconsin.

I remember clearly telling them that we are newspaper people. This means that we work within deadlines. I told them that we would make every effort to find all of the Wisconsin photos by Memorial Day 2015 and I sensed they thought I was a little “crazy.” It was an impossible goal since only Wyoming had found all of their photos.

We helped find all of the photos from Wisconsin by the Friday before Memorial Day 2015. We published every photo in our Memorial Day edition in 2016, along with many other Wisconsin newspapers.

The people at Wisconsin Public Radio and Television embraced the accomplishment by sponsoring a traveling exhibit with all of the 1,161 photos of Wisconsin military members killed in the Vietnam War. It is called “Wisconsin Remembers: A Face for Every Name.” The traveling display is also sponsored by the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and the WNA.

On February 1, the display was at the Milwaukee County War Memorial Center. I, along with University of WisconsinMilwaukee investigative journalism instructor Jessica McBride and UW-Milwaukee journalism student Dylan Deprey, each spoke about our roles in finding the photos.

There were about 75 or 80 Vietnam veterans present including Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Gary Wetzel. Gary does not attend many events anymore, so this topic must have obviously touched him.

The photo of Gary looking at his fallen comrades taken by Renee Riddle from the War Memorial captured the moment. I knew as soon as I saw the photo that it would be our feature photo for this Memorial Day. The moment was a severely wounded war hero who bravely fought off the enemy in a battle where his actions saved many American lives viewing photos of many dead heroes. I am sure he knew many of them.

He is a true American hero and it was awesome to have him present. This is what we are supposed to do on Memorial Day – to review the cost of being free. We will always remember those who gave all for us from all wars!

The “Wisconsin Remembers: A Face for Every Name” display will be at Turner Hall in Filmore this Memorial Day. Normally I like to go to Arlington National Cemetery for the National Memorial Day service since my son is buried in Arlington. However, this year I was invited to talk about the Faces Project as part of a Memorial Day service. The program will begin at 12:30 p.m. I will be speaking about the value of a photo of our KIA’s and about the project. Turner Hall is located at 523 Co. Hwy H, Fredonia. I hope to see some of you in Filmore.

The Gold Star concept originated during World War I when parents began hanging redand-white service flags in their windows. A blue star in the center indicated a son or a spouse was deployed in the military. The tradition goes that when a family member was killed in action, then a “gold star” was sewn over the blue star.

Either flag can have multiple stars that correspond to multiple individuals serving or multiple deaths. I was told by one of my son’s sergeants that there is one family that has three Gold Stars from the current war.

In 1947 the U.S. Congress established the

Gold Star lapel pin to provide widows and widowers, children, parents, and brothers and sisters of members of the Armed Forces of the United States who lost their lives in the defense of democracy and freedom during the World Wars I and II, and any subsequent armed hostilities in which the United States became engaged. The Gold Star pin unique design incorporates the symbols that indicated the family’s loss: the laurel wreath border signifies valor; the purple field (background) signifies the family’s grief or mourning; the Gold Star has been used since World War I to signify “died in a combat theater.”

I traveled to Oklahoma, Missouri and Springfield, Illinois twice, to work on the project along with the support of the National Newspaper Association. I included an updated chart about the project on our Memorial Day pages. I am very proud to report that as of May 15, there are 28 states that have completely found all of

their photos, leaving a total of 2,707 missing photos in the U.S. It is my greatest hope that the newspapers working along with many other organizations and volunteers can finish up this project of finding the last missing photos before the groundbreaking of the new VVMF Education Center in Washington D.C.
