Football Team Hopes To Return To Post Season The Campbellsport Cougars football team is hoping to make it back to the playoffs again this year. Last year was the first time in five years that the team made it to the playoffs.

The varsity team finished with a 5-4 record, 4-3 in conference. They advanced to the playoffs, but lost in round one to Martin Luthern from Milwaukee.

“If we stay healthy, we are hoping to make a return trip to the playoffs,” said Coach Todd Wondra.

“When we get in, hopefully we can advance beyond round one.”

The strength for the team this year will be the seniors and their experience. A large group of 18 seniors return to the team all with at least two years of varsity experience.

The key players returning for the team this year

will be Drake Fleischman, quarterback and linebacker; Nick Fleischman, wide receiver and corner back; Mike O’Brien, offensive lineman and linebacker; and Trevor Engel, offensive and defensive lineman.

Key players lost to graduation are Nick Narges, all-conference both offense and defense; Kal Ferguson, all-conference both offense and defense; and Matt Koelbl, all-conference defense.

In the conference, Wondra expects Kewaskum, Plymouth and Berlin to all battle for the title again.

“Berlin, Plymouth, and Kewaskum look to be the teams to beat in the conference until teams prove otherwise,” Wondra said. “They all lose players but are able to replace them and continue to be the teams to beat each year.”

The team is excited for the 2019 season. Wondra is being assisted by coaches Nick Kreif, Tim Marchant, Andrew Boss, Kurt Parker, Doug Wondra, Ricky Batzler, Josh Fleischman and Kevin Koelbl.

“This is only my third season as head coach but watching these kids grow into better players and more importantly better people is what it’s about,” Wondra said. “Watching the program continue to work and improve each day is a good thing. Last season returning to the playoffs for the first time in five seasons was great.”

Don’t miss the remaining home games for the varsity Cougars, they are on September 20th, September 27th, and October 11th. Homecoming is October 11th against Kettle Moraine Lutheran.

Dreher, Lange Expected To Lead Kew-Cats To Successful Season

By Judy Harlow After losing three regulars from last season, which produced a second straight trip to the sectional and a third place finish in the North Shore Conference, Amy Uhlig, coach of the combined KewaskumCampbellsport team, knew she was in need of reinforcements.

Amy Uhlig, now the dean of coaches at Kewaskum High, is starting her 14th season as head coach. She was greeted by nine candidates for 2019, including six from Kewaskum and three from Campbellsport Uhlig has three returning letter winners, led by Campbellsport senior Alyssa Dreher, who is starting her fourth season on the varsity team. A year ago, Dreher averaged 45.0 and finished in a tie for second place in the regional with a score of 44-41—85.

Others returning are KHS seniors Karissa Lange and Madelyn Thull. Lange averaged 51.7 strokes per nine-hole round a year ago, while Thull’s average was 54.98.

“We are lacking the depth we had last year, but I'm hopeful that our seniors can set the tone for us early in the season,” Uhlig said. She added, “Alyssa has been our most consistent and fundamentally sound golfer over the past few seasons, and we are looking for significant leadership from her again this season.”

Uhlig went on to say, “Maddy and Karissa have the ability to break 50, and we will be looking for them to be consistent counters for us all year. Hoping our juniors, Anderson and (Kendra) Hewitt, step up and contribute to varsity this year for the first time. They have both improved their games since last year, so I'm excited to see what they will bring to the table.”

Another player Uhlig is counting on is Grace Lee. “Grace Lee has also worked very hard on her game during the off-season (at the Washington County Course), and I anticipate her playing JV and possibly some varsity this season,” Uhlig said.

Gone are veterans Grace Kober, Ashley Trapp and Tina Bolek. They graduated in June, and all of them will be missed.

About the NS conference race, Uhlig said, “Cedarburg won the North Shore Conference title last year.

We finished in third place in conference, which is our best in the North Shore thus far. The top challengers for the conference crown this year will be Cedarburg, Whitefish Bay and Hartford. I'm hopeful that we can compete right around the middle of the pack this year in conference.”

This is the third season in the North Shore since the conference realignment by the WIAA. Kewaskum finished 20th out of 24 teams in the August 15 Washington County Invitational, and Dreher was tied for 22nd in the field of 125.

Soccer Team Is A Bit Younger This Season The Campbellsport High School boys soccer team starts the season as a younger team as a whole.

The team lost six players to graduation. All six of these players had been varsity starters since their sophomore year.

“Their game experience will be missed,” said Coach Tyler Writt.

Though this team is much younger, they have a great drive and will to learn.

“We are a young squad who really enjoy playing soccer,” Writt said. “We will look to each other to get

better and look to compete at the end of the year.”

The group works well together and is ready to improve throughout the year.

In addition to the youth on the team, another thing the team will have to work through again this year will be a low number of players overall. This will put

a bigger burden on all players.

“We are inexperienced and a little thin when it comes to number of players,” Writt said.

As for key players this year, Writt has a large list.

“Every returning player this year will be important to our success as we are a young team,” he said.

The team’s goal this year will be to continue to improve.

“Being a young team, we are looking to be better each game and take care of our own business,” Writt said. “At the end of the season we hope to be better than last year and in a position to move on in the playoffs.”

The coach expects the top spot in the conference to be a three-way race this year between Kettle Moraine Lutheran, Waupun and Plymouth. KML won the conference last year and Waupun is bringing back a senior-loaded team.

Writt expects this to be a good season, no matter how the team does.

“We were recently at a coaching clinic at UWWhitewater and their head coach said you must have a passion for the sport,” Writt said. “This team and program has the passion that I share and that is just an awesome feeling to be a part of.”

Volleyball Team Starts Year With New Head Coach And Large Group Of Seniors The Campbellsport High School volleyball team starts the 2019 season with a new head coach.

Taylor Brown takes over the reigns as the varsity volleyball coach assisted by Kelly Gersonde.

“Coach Gersonde and myself were both new to the district last year,” Brown said. “Volleyball has always been a passion of both of ours. We couldn’t

be happier to be more involved in the school district and back to playing a sport that we both love to play and a sport that has taught both of us so many life skills and lessons.”

Assisting Brown this year are long-time Campbellsport assistant coaches Candida Fryman and Carla Ward.

The Cougars start the season with many experienced players, including a large group of seniors.

Only three players were lost to graduation — Morgan Fryman, Brianna Flitter and Hailey Rose.

Returning seniors Amber Kissinger, Evonna Engel, Cora Welsh, Daley Jungers, Madilyn Danza, Skylahr Murphy, Grace Nerat, Michaela Thelen and Shayley Narges. Joining them are juniors Alexis Feucht and Lauren Heisdorf; sophomore Cassidy Stahl; and freshman Kylie Krueger.

“We have a total of nine seniors returning this year which we are hoping will make for a very strong start to our season,” Brown said.

According to Brown, the team has an eagerness to work hard, a willingness to learn and supportive younger players.

The one weakness is their height. “In general, our

program lacks a lot of height,” Brown said. “But we are very strong and well-rounded defensively, which is crucial.”

Brown has implemented a new program for the team.

“New this year we created a ‘sisterhood’ for our program,” she said. “Each junior and senior player is paired up with a sophomore and freshman player who they are ‘sisters’ with. We grouped the girls in their sisterhoods based off of their positions on the teams. We are hoping that the sisterhood will develop to be a great mentorship program for our younger players and in turn give the juniors and seniors the leadership role that they are all capable of doing!”

The varsity team captains this year are Shayley Narges and Grace Nerat.

Brown expects the team to do fairly well this year.

“If our team stays healthy and strong, we are hoping for a successful season this year,” she said.

Boys Cross Country Team Should Do Well The Campbellsport High School boys cross country team goes into the 2019 season with some experienced runners.

The team returns six of its seven varsity members from last year.

“We have a nice mix of upper classmen and young runners,” said Coach Mike Kulibert. “We have depth with several runners competing for varsity spots.”

Key runners returning this year are Skyler Fryman, Joe Krahn, Connor Hamm, Jared Engel, Sam Grahl, Garrett Roehl and Nick Timm. The varsity team will consist of these runners along with Jerid Waddle, Max Engle and Jake

Mader.

The one thing the team will need to work on this year is consistency. They will need to be more consistent from meet to meet.

As for who will be at the top in the conference this year, Kulibert said it is hard to pick this year. “This conference title race could be wide open,” he said.

“Several schools had many of their top runners graduate. Ripon or Kettle Moraine Lutheran could surprise this year.”

As for the Cougars, Kulibert is expecting they should be able to compete throughout the season.

Girls Cross Country Should Do Well This Year The Campbellsport High School girls cross country team should have a good season this year.

The Cougars return with most of their varsity members from last year and have some promising new runners.

Key runners returning for Campbellsport are Calla Loehr, Sara Scannell, Macy Pawlowski, Missy Gilles and Morgan Yahr.

In addition to this group, rounding out the varsity team will be Andrea Yahr and Ellie Scannell.

Last season, the Cougars finished in seventh place at the conference meet. They also took second place at the Valley Christian Invite and 11th at sectionals.

The strength of the team will be its returning runners from the varsity team. They will be missing Lily Lindgren who graduated and Izzy Bente who moved, but the team is in good shape.

This team is a young team and will have to work hard for better times as the season goes on.

In the conference, Kulibert expects Plymouth and Winneconne to be the top teams. He thinks Campbellsport can have a good season.

“Our young runners will have to step up in order to build on last year,” Kulibert said.

Make sure to check out the home meet this season. The Cougar Invite will be held on Thursday, Oct. 10, at Campbellsport Elementary School starting at 4 p.m.
