How does coronavirus spread?

It seems to spread very easily from person to person, especially in homes, hospitals and other confined spaces. The pathogen can be carried on tiny respiratory droplets that fall as they are coughed or sneezed out. It may also be transmitted when we touch a contaminated surface and then touch our face.

Is there a vaccine yet?

No. The first testing in humans of an experimental vaccine began in mid-March.

Such rapid development of a potential vaccine is unprecedented, but even if it is proved safe and effective, it probably will not be available for 12 to 18 months.

What makes this outbreak so different?

Unlike the flu, there is no known treatment or vaccine, and little is known about this particular virus so far. It seems to be more lethal than the flu, but the numbers are still uncertain. And it hits the elderly and those with underlying conditions — not just those with respiratory diseases — particularly hard.

What should I do if I feel sick?

If you’ve been exposed to the coronavirus or think you have, and have a fever or symptoms like a cough or difficulty breathing, call a doctor. They should give you advice on whether you should be tested, how to get tested, and how to seek medical treatment without potentially infecting or exposing others.

How do I get tested?

If you’re sick and you think you’ve been exposed to the new coronavirus, the C.D.C. recommends that you call your healthcare provider and explain your symptoms and fears. They will decide if you need to be tested. Keep in mind that there’s a chance — because of a lack of testing kits or because you’re asymptomatic, for instance — you won’t be able to get tested.

What if somebody in my family gets sick?

If the family member doesn’t need hospitalization and can be cared for at home, you should help him or her with basic needs and monitor the symptoms, while also keeping as much distance as possible, according to guidelines issued by the C.D.C. If there’s space, the sick family member should stay in a separate room and use a separate bathroom. If masks are available, both the sick person and the caregiver should wear them when the caregiver enters the room. Make sure not to share any dishes or other household items and to regularly clean surfaces like counters, doorknobs, toilets and tables. Don’t forget to wash your hands frequently.

Should I stock up on groceries?

Plan two weeks of meals if possible. But people should not hoard food or supplies.

Despite the empty shelves, the supply chain remains strong. And remember to wipe the handle of the grocery cart with a disinfecting wipe and wash your hands as soon as you get home.

Can I go to the park?

Yes, but make sure you keep six feet of distance between you and people who don’t live in your home. Even if you just hang out in a park, rather than go for a jog or a walk, getting some fresh air, and hopefully sunshine, is a good idea.

Saturday Night Live’ Star Michael Che Loses Grandmother To COVID-19

Saturday Night Live star Michael Che revealed that his family was not immune to the novel Coronavirus affecting millions around the globe. In a somber post on social media, the comedian revealed that his grandmother died after contracting COVID-19 Monday.

“Hi. I’m Michael Che, from TV. Last night my grandmother passed away from the Coronavirus,” Che wrote in an open letter. “I’m doing OK, considering.”

Because of the highly infectious nature of COVID-19, patients being treated for this virus are routinely not permitted to have friends or family members at their side during treatment. Che noted how difficult it was to say goodbye without seeing his beloved grandmother.

“I’m obviously very hurt and angry that she had to go through all that pain alone,” he said.

“But I’m also happy that she’s not in pain anymore. And I also feel guilty for feeling happy. Basically the whole gamut of complex feelings everybody else has losing someone very close and special. I’m not unique,” added Che. The comedian went on to acknowledge that the threat of COVID-19 continues, sadly.

grappled with a number of symptoms—including pneumonia and kidney failure—before testing positive for the virus.

“This whole three weeks have been an ordeal,” Jordan said. “It’s the craziest sh-t I have ever done and seen in my life. I’ve been to the point where I just felt like I was just gonna die.”

The rapper described being unable to breathe and continuously vomiting. Things were made worse when he had to be tested a second time for Coronavirus after his first test was misplaced.

“They swab my nose, trying to find out if I got Coronavirus,” he said. “Came back again next Wednesday, Thursday, nothing.”

Family and Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Remember Deputy Who Died of COVID-19 Kitty Alvarado Connect Terrell Young, a 52-year-old deputy with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department died from complications of COVID-19. The first deputy from the department to die from the virus.

Sheriff Chad Bianco says this is a tragic loss, “Our hearts go out to his family and friends … Deputy Young was a fantastic employee for this department, he worked for us for almost 15 years … he certainly was an asset to this department and he’ll be missed.”

Behind the badge, he was a loving husband and proud father of four who also served his country as a U.S. Marine. His family is devastated over his loss. They sent us this statement: Deputy Terrell Young was a pillar in his family and the community. He was never seen without a smile on his face, always looking for ways to encourage those around him. His wife and four children love and miss him dearly.

“There’s not even a word created to describe my pain. It’s unimaginable,” Sandy Brown told the Detroit News.

According to the report, Freddie Jr. fell ill in the middle of March. By March 22, the elder Brown, who had had a kidney transplant in 2012, was having trouble breathing and was being prepped to be put on a ventilator. Three days later his lung collapsed, and by the next day, he was gone.

Initially, nurses did not want Sandy to go near her husband, but she insisted.

“I’m going in that room,” she told them. “I don’t care what I have to do. I’ll sign whatever I need to sign.”

She was swaddled in protective gear in order to say her goodbyes.

But the nightmare wasn’t over yet.

One day after his dad died, Freddie III, who had asthma, began to feel sick himself. It initially seemed as if the younger Brown, who was just 20, was getting better. However, his condition suddenly rapidly begin to decline.

Freddie III was Sandy’s only child. After two miscarriages, Sandy had reportedly thought children were not in her cards until she became pregnant at 40. Freddie III was her miracle child.

“In three days, I lost my husband and son to an ugly plague,” she told the news site. “I watched my son go from completely well and whole and happy to being gone in three days.”

86-Year Old Woman and Her 3 Sons From New Orleans Have All Died From Coronavirus Patricia Frieson

Antoinette Franklin New Orleans, LA — Antoinette Franklin, an elderly woman from New Orleans who was 86-years old, and her 3 sons, who were aged 58 to 71, have all died from complications of the Coronavirus after testing positive of COVID-19.

“My uncle passed, my grandmother passed, my dad passed, then my other uncle passed its literally like 7-8 days apart it’s horrific,” Anthony Franklin told WDSU. 58-year old Anthony Frank-

61-year old Timothy Franklin was considered the baseball enthusiast in the family.

71-year old Herman Franklin wanted to be closer to his family so he just recently moved back to New Orleans.

Their family said they are not sure how they were infected of the virus, but confirmed that they all got sick almost at the same time.

“I want the world to know

if it happened to the Franklin family it could happen to any family,” Jacqueline Franklin said. “Let’s take this serious my children have to bury their father, their precious grandmother and their uncles. Let’s not let this happen to another family.”

A service for her 3 sons was held last Friday and attended by only a few relatives and friends to adhere to the social distancing restrictions.

A separate service was set for Antoinette on Saturday.

20 People Catch Coronavirus After Attending Black Funerals Pastor Who Gave Eulogy Dies

A local Black-owned funeral home in Albany, Georgia, is shocked to learn they unknowingly hosted two funerals that reportedly infected at least 20 people with Coronavirus including the pastor who delivered one of the eulogies.

Sadly, that pastor has since died from COVID-19.

Local health officials say that the outbreak began shortly after the funerals for 64year old retired janitor Andrew J. Mitchell and another unnamed man. Both funerals were attended by their relatives and friends, and at least one person who attended was infected causing others to also become infected.

A few days later, there were at least 490 confirmed Coronavirus cases and at least 29 Coronavirus-related deaths reported in Dougherty County, which is home to Albany, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health.

“It took one person, whoever that was, and there was no intent,” Scott Steiner, CEO of Albany’s largest hospital told CNN. “It shows this virus can quickly spread.”

The Georgia Department of Health confirmed that the vi-

rus spread among “individuals who attended a number of events in Albany.” The department added, however, that it is not yet 100% clear “where or with whom it all started.”

Mitchell’s 75-year old longtime partner Emell Murray was one of those infected with the Coronavirus. She was hospitalized for fever and high blood pressure a few days after Mitchell’s funeral.

So how did all this start?

Authorities have reportedly traced the townwide outbreak to a 67-year old man who traveled from Atlanta to attend one of the funerals. He reported being sick, and was hospitalized in Albany.

“The next day it’s when we began seeing people coming to our emergency room who were sick,” Steiner said. “Two (people) the first day, six the next day, eight the next day, and it just began to cascade from that point.”

The Martin Luther King Memorial Chapel, which hosted the two funerals on February 29 and March 7 respectively,

released a statement after they were notified by the health department officials of the possible spread of the virus on March 13.

“Although we have been identified as a common factor in the tracking of the COVID-19 in Albany, know that we are operating within all regulatory safety or health guidelines,” the funeral home directors wrote in a Facebook post. “We know that there is growing concern across the city. We are taking extra precautions to protect you, our staff and the communities we serve.”

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his concern about the rapid increase of Coronavirus cases in Albany in a press conference, citing the importance of complying with the stay-at-home order in the state.

“I believe there was a funeral service weeks ago where an infected person went, and it created this whole epicenter which just exploded down there,” Kemp said. “That’s one of the reasons we have been begging people to not have — and I know it’s a hard thing — religious services.”

“The virus was freewheeling in our community and probably has been here for quite some time,” Dr. Jeff Smith, a physician who is the chief executive of Santa Clara County government, explained during a recent briefing.

Data collected by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hypothesizes the virus first showed up “back in December,” while a study coming out of Stanford took note of a dramatic viral surge back in February, suggesting the virus was around for approximately two months before it became noticeable.

The Atlantic reports that San Francisco mayor London Breed was criticized initially for her response to the pandemic, because she moved early to shut down businesses. It is now believed that her quick response minimized the toll on the city. The governor of California, Gavin Newsom, issued a stay-at-home order and shut down businesses a

few days later.

This wasn’t recognized because we were having a severe flu season,” Smith said in an interview.

“Symptoms are very much like the flu. If you got a mild case of COVID, you didn’t really notice. You didn’t even go to the doctor. The doctor maybe didn’t even do it because they presumed it was the flu.”

It was first reported that, “COVID-19 did not reappear in the Bay Area until Feb. 27, when doctors finally decided to test a hospitalized woman who had been ill for weeks. She became the region’s first case of community-spread Coronavirus.”

But since then Smith has explained to county supervisors, “When public health [officials] tried to track down the start of the disease … we weren’t able to find, specifically, a contact. That means the virus is in the community already — not, as was suspected by the CDC, as only in China and being spread from contact with China.”

Two Sisters From Illinois Died Just 9 Days Apart From Coronavirus

Chicago, IL Patricia Frieson, a 61-year old retired nurse from Illinois, was the first reported death from the Coronavirus in the state. Just 9 days later, her older sister, 63-year old Wanda Bailey, also died from the virus.

When Patricia started having difficulties breathing, her family didn’t think it was that serious. Until she tested positive with COVID-19 and eventually died on March 16.

Unfortunately, on that same day, her family also found out that Wanda, her older sister, was taken to the ER due to cough. She died of pneumonia due to COVID-19 as well on March 25.

Their family has yet been sure why out of all the 9 siblings, Wanda was the one who got infected even though she has always stayed at home. But at one time, Patricia and Wanda apparently attended church together.

Moreover, their family is particularly grieving with the fact that they weren’t able to give the two sisters a final goodbye because of the necessary procedures in an infectious disease death.

“The toughest part about my sisters’ death is that they had to die alone in the hospital,” Frieson told CNN. “It’s just devastating to us that we couldn’t go to see them in their last moments.”

Currently, there are a total of more than 5,000 known cases of Coronavirus in Illinois and 73 deaths.

Who Gets the Ventilators?

ignorance of the “Commander in Chief.” We now know that there are not enough tests to detect the Coronavirus, nor enough ventilators to treat all of those who are ill.

Medical professionals are talking openly about the choices they will make and the fact that some people will be judged more likely to survive than others.

Through which lens will these medical professionals decide who gets a ventilator? Will age be the only lens, advantaging a 30-year-old over an 80-year-old? Will there be other filters? Will a man with children get preference over a single woman? An author over a homeless person? A white person over a person of color? Medical professionals are being asked to choose and to judge. How will their conscious or unconscious bias play a role in their judgments?

The National Academy of Medicine describes itself as “an independent, nonprofit organization that works outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision-makers and the public” On its website, it acknowledges “evidence of racial and ethnic disparities in health care.” Will this evidence influence the distribution of ventilators?

People will need these ventilators to breathe. They may need them for weeks, not days. Some will survive, and some won’t. The survival rate is a function of the bizarre avoidance our so-called leaders make decisions about this pandemic. But who will be saved? An innocent infant or the despot who lives in the house that enslaved people built?

Dr. Dorothy Irene Height was 98 when she died in 2010.

She was productive until her final days. In her own words, she was “dressed and in her right mind” until the end.

Would the doctor choosing who got a ventilator see the history contained in that precious black body? Or would he make choices based on stereotypes? I know that by Black 92-year-old mama, disabled by a stroke, still gives her children strength and love, smiles, and sharp reprimands (yes, the lady hit me when I used profanity in her presence.

Whose life would I trade that for?)

We must not forget the many ways that Black bodies were used for medical experiments, from the use of Black women’s genitalia to develop gynecology through the Tuskegee syphilis studies that lasted from 1932 through 1972. Black people’s lives have too often been white people’s experiments. It is not paranoid, but merely cautious, to wonder who will get the ventilators, and whose needs will be sidelined. Now the words “Black Lives Matter” take on a more pointed meaning.

This Coronavirus illustrates our nation’s faultlines by class race and gender. The Coronavirus also refutes the notion of our nation’s exceptionalism. The United States just ain’t all that, despite our “greatest” rhetoric. We are stumbling compared to other countries – Italy, China, Spain – who have attempted, generously, to show us the way forward.

One of the populations I’ve heard very little about is incarcerated people. How do you socially distance when you are confined, with another person, in a small cell?

Given our collective disdain for the incarcerated, will an incarcerated person with Coronavirus have a chance?

The Coronavirus will hit princes and paupers, members of Congress and members of the clergy, computer whizzes and those who don’t have computers. We may all be at risk from the Coronavirus, but class, race, and gender will likely determine who has the best chance at recovery.

We can’t call ourselves “great” unless we are fair. Will everyone have a chance to recover from this virus?
