5 Questions We Asked An Enfield Business This month, we caught up with Rosy Holt, Celebrant, to ask her the famous 5 questions: What does your business offer its customers?

What made you start your own business? I started my own business in 1993. My celebrant business, I started during the first lockdown when my customer service business that worked almost exclusively with the hospitality and travel sector came to an abrupt halt. I have always spoken publicly, organised events and been interested in learning more about being a celebrant. Lockdown gave me the opportunity and time to train in the profession.

06

The Rosy Holt Celebrant business offers its customers the occasion to make their formal ceremonies stand out, be just what they want and include everything important to them, which just might include the quirky but definitely wouldn’t be included in the standard scripted event. “Your voice, your choice, your ceremony”. Whether you are looking at a wedding, a vow renewal, a baby naming, a funeral or memorial or even a business celebration, I can officiate and facilitate to give you the event that works for you. What kind of customers are you looking for? Are there any types of businesses you would like to collaborate with? I am looking for customers that want something a little bit different, and who want their event to be remembered for

the right reasons. It isn’t one size fits all and that is what I want to showcase. I would like to collaborate with anyone organising events although wedding planners and funeral directors have to be high on my list of collaborators.

we had to during the pandemic when social distancing and other regulations were in place especially at funerals, it was hard.

What’s the toughest part of running your business?

Keep going, be consistent and believe in yourself, if you don’t no one else will.

There really isn’t a tough part of my business. I have always enjoyed all the businesses I have run if I hadn’t I wouldn’t have been part of them, but if I have to choose something I suppose it would have to be saying “No” as

What piece of advice would you give to another business owner?

Top Tips with Tania Bringing you tech tips from BT Skills for Tomorrow Make online gaming a positive experience for your family With the Summer holidays upon us, do you worry that your kids will be spending more time online gaming? Gaming has been the single most popular digital activity during lockdown with over half of school age children gaming every day from their mobile devices – and they’re not just using gaming platforms to ‘play games’. Research conducted by Internet Matters, a not-for-profit online safety organisation, suggests that children are using games to connect with friends, discover new interests and to learn and participate in online events - so just like playing physical games, playing games online is a huge part of your child’s development.

Whilst there are many positives to online gaming, there is still a real worry from parents, that their children spend too much time on multiplayer gaming. Seemingly unable to disengage or simply ‘pause’ the game. As the sun finally comes out, there is the daily battle of trying to get kids off the screen and outside for some physical exercise.

Gaming has been the single most popular digital activity during lockdown

Kids don’t have to be gamers to participate in the gaming world -

> 61% play alone > 48% play with others

64% say they watch videos of games they don’t play as a source of entertainment* How to make online gaming a positive experience for you family It’s a fine balance but make a start by talking to your children regularly about their online activity – make it part of the norm, just as you’d ask them about their day at school. As you feel more comfortable talking about their gaming activity, try introducing the following:

10 12

• Family agreement o Work with your child to agree what games and what times in the week they can play - that works for the whole family. o Try and be flexible if there is a particular time that your child will be meeting with their friends for a specific game. o Why not consider a family game night where the whole family gets involved? • Agree rules and boundaries - Ensure your child knows what to do if they: -

are contacted by a stranger

-

are being bullied or witness bullying in a game

-

feel they have to play/show the same behaviour as others i.e., an expectation to behave in a certain way when gaming

o Configure your web browsers securely, using a firewall o Set up their user profile to include age appropriate language and game content, ensuring security is always set high on their profiles and accounts o Ensure your child is aware that they should never give away personal information over the internet whilst playing or downloading games o Help your child create and use strong passwords, which should never be shared Want to help your family get the most out of tech?

Head to BT Skills for Tomorrow to find a range of free courses and advice – from parental controls and gaming advice to digital wellbeing.

Setting Controls Although not 100% effective, parental controls and privacy settings can provide confidence that you’re giving your child the best chance to be protected from harm. Reviewing the settings on the app or games console, as well as wi-fi settings should provide a good digital boundary and the main things to consider are:

Improving Employment Prospects for unemployed young people 21K Digital Media and Technology Hub was established in Edmonton Green Shopping Centre to enhance digital & employability skills to Improve employment prospects for unemployed young people aged 16 to 24 year olds living in Edmonton and surrounding Areas Our aim is to: Increase access to high quality short digital and employability skills training courses for disadvantaged unemployed young people living in Enfield who are underrepresented in the media and technology industries. Additionally, avert them from a life of crime and violence and enable them to contribute to the socioeconomic world within they live.

Our Objectives: • To engage and enable young to plan their futures • Provide pre-entry level 2 courses in Digital Media and Career Planning • Provide a safe space where young people could come and learn coding after school.

Why we exist: To tackle the disproportionately high youth unemployment in Enfield and surrounding neighbourhoods. Tips To Reduce Stress from Bridgette Mansfield Hypnotherapy And what a stressful time it’s been!

due to school or peer pressure. However, a situation that feels stressful to one person may be motivating to someone else and this can be down to our past experiences, our learnt behaviours, our thought processes and our own level of self-esteem.

So how can hypnotherapy help reduce stress levels……………..

Stress is the feeling of being under too much mental or emotional pressure, when you feel unable to cope, which can cause health problems We all experience stress at one stage or another. It can be caused by health issues, money worries, constant worrying, loneliness, pressure at work, no work, lack of control, family problems, bereavement, divorce and many other reasons. Stress is recognised to be one of the main causes of sick absence from work and it seems that more and more children are suffering with stress

18

Stress is caused by our subconscious protecting us. We may go into a fight or flight response when we are in an uncomfortable situation. Our subconscious can’t tell the difference between what is real and what we are imagining so it sometimes acts as if we are in a life threatening situation when in fact all we are doing is for eg. a presentation in front of 20 people or starting a new job! We are then left with all this extra energy with nowhere for it to go. This can leave us with feelings of stress, anxiety, anger, depression, frustration, insomnia and mood swings

Being stressed is a physical reaction as much as an emotional one. Stress is everywhere in our lives these days. You cannot change that, but you can change your reaction to it. The aim is to find ways of managing stress and using it to our advantage

Self-hypnosis – tips for relaxation Hypnosis is known to be a powerful tool to help reduce stress. In fact, hypnotherapy for stress can be effective even after just one session You can complement your hypnotherapy sessions with selfhypnosis at home.

whether it’s a tropical beach, a beautiful garden or maybe your home. 4. Then repeat positive affirmations. For eg. I am calm…..I am relaxed…..I am in control Whatever you say to yourself in your mind, make sure it is positive (so don’t say to yourself…I am not stressed… as the subconscious does not recognise the negative.) After approximately 2 mins, you can count out 1,2,3, open your eyes and continue with your day. If you do this every day for two weeks, you will find that you start to think more positively.

1. Find a place where you can relax and be free of too many distractions e.g. your favourite chair, lying on your bed. 2. Take in a slow deep breath, imagining you are breathing in positive thoughts and feelings and then gently close your eyes. As you exhale, relax your body as much as you can and blow away any worries, stress and negative thoughts. 3. Count down from 10 -1 with each deep breath, feeling yourself sinking deeper and deeper into the chair. When you get to 1, imagine the most peaceful place for you,

Feel free to contact Bridgette to find out more or to discuss how to de-stress with hypnotherapy www.123relax.co.uk

GOODBYE TO THE GREEN BELT? NOT IF YOU SAY NO! You can help to stop this happening! One of the most important Council consultations ever is going on right now. The Council is asking for our ideas about their Draft Local Plan, which will shape the future of Enfield not just for the 15 years of the Plan but permanently. If you have heard nothing about it, you are not alone. That’s why Enfield RoadWatch, in coalition with several other local groups, is spreading the word and encouraging everyone to take part in the consultation and save the Green Belt before it’s too late.

Our borough is known as one of the greenest in London, thanks to its extensive Green Belt, made up of farms, parks, golf courses and other open spaces. Many people move to Enfield because of its rolling and beautiful green spaces, which act as the lungs of London, fight against climate change and provide residents with a wealth of mental and physical benefits, even more so during the pandemic. Now large areas of that are under threat. A new Local Plan is being developed and important parts of the Green Belt are targeted for development. If this goes through, Enfield will be changed forever – unnecessarily, because there are alternatives. 20

Enfield Council are expecting residents to navigate through the thousands of pages in multiple documents which make up the draft local plan, an incredible challenge, which most people will prefer to ignore. But Green Belt campaign group Enfield RoadWatch has simplified the process to make it possible for everyone to have their say. Visit www.Enfield RoadWatch.co.uk to find out how. Virtually anyone with an interest in Enfield of any age is eligible to take part.

So, why are we making this effort? Just look at this list of the key Green Belt sites under threat and you’ll know why. •

Crews Hill Garden centres, golf

course and open land – gone. The fields on either side of Enfield Road, including all of Vicarage Farm up to Hadley Road and the equestrian centre – gone.

Green areas in Hadley Wood gone.

Half of Whitewebbs Park – gone.

Holly Hill Farm - gone

Essentially a big chunk of Enfield’s historic Enfield Chase with its heritage landscape – gone.

And the sites aren’t only in the west of the borough. Rammey Marsh – gone.

Crews Hill is one of the two largest areas under threat. It is targeted for 7,500 homes right up to the M25. Many businesses will be displaced and the jobs they provide. A place known as ‘The Golden Mile of Garden Centres’, which draws visitors from far and wide, will disappear and with it a long tradition of horticulture and market gardening, which should instead be revived, growing local food for local people.

The other large area is Vicarage Farm, which stretches from Enfield Road to Hadley Road. An area of open beauty, this lovely rolling farmland is an important remaining piece of the historic Enfield Chase, from which many places in Enfield derive their name. These fields could be used for crops again. More jobs and more local food for local people. The Council’s so-called preferred option, which includes all the above, is NOT the only option to meet housing and other needs. There are alternatives that would bring regeneration to deprived areas, improving public services like transport, medical facilities and more. And don’t believe the threat of skyscrapers. There are alternatives to those too.

Please visit our website to learn how to tell the Council a resounding NO! If you think you can offer any support towards our campaign, no matter how small, please do get in touch at info@ enfieldroadwatch.co.uk we would love to hear from you.
