SATURDAY, MAY 8 BRONX FATHER’S TAKING ACTION -SKILLS & DRILLS SOCCER CHALLENGE 10am-1pm Fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and male role models compete with their child(ren) at Patterson Playground at our very first ever Skills & Drills Soccer Challenge. South Bronx United Soccer Club will be teaching basic soccer training and drills appropriate for any age group to participate. This event will consist of family engagement, organizations tabling and encouraging all fathers to enjoy a great day with their son(s) and/or daughter(s). Sports Attire is strongly recommended. Equipment will be provided if needed. Everyone participating in this event must wear their face covering at all times due to safety regulations. Families must RSVP to attend this event. BRONX WEEK HEALTH DAY 1pm- 4pm Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and sponsors Montefiore Medical Center, Empire BlueCross Blue Shield, BronxCare and the Westchester Square BID are supporting local communities with a comprehensive health fair. Public and private organizations that offer healthcare services for seniors, veterans, families, children and adolescents will be providing free testing, health screenings, and vaccinations. BMHC'S BRONX RISING! PRESENTS MASKING THE SEASONS Through to June 6, 12pm - 4:30pm Bronx Rising! performance series returns to in-person programming with an outdoor event in Bronx Music Hall Plaza, the location of our future home. FLORA & FAUNA OF OUR COUNTRIES MURAL ACTIVITY 10am – 6pm Join BRAC for free mixed-media workshops this spring which will explore the emotional connections immigrants share. Reflecting on memories of family textiles, flora & fauna from different countries, mythical animals, legends and traditions, participants will develop a mixedmedia project and get together a week later to build their mural using vibrant tapes. Co-founded in 1978 by the late BCC President and Tuskegee Airman, Roscoe C. Brown Jr., the Run attracts over 2,000 participants annually. It includes 10K & 5K runs, and a 2-mile walk to promote health and fitness in The Bronx and beyond. Runners of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate from a local track, park, treadmill – anywhere! VIRTUAL WALKING TOUR: BELMONT NEIGHBORHOOD AND LITTLE ITALY OF THE BRONX 3pm – 4:30pm Join branch staff from Belmont Library for a virtual tour of the Belmont neighborhood of The Bronx, fondly known as Bronx Little Italy, which has been a critical part of the development of the borough and city. MOTHER’S DAY VIRTUAL WILD ENCOUNTER 12:30pm, 2:30pm, 4:30pm Treat mom to a wild Mother’s Day this year with a 15-minute Virtual Wild Encounter featuring a Bronx Zoo alligator and a surprise animal guest! GARDEN HIGHLIGHTS WALK 2:00pm – 3:00 pm Join a knowledgeable Wave Hill Garden Guide on a tour of favorite garden areas and seasonal highlights. Severe weather cancels. Walks do not include the Conservatory at this time. This walk ends at 2:45PM. TUESDAY, MAY 11 BUSINESS DAY LUNCHEON 12pm- 2pm “In spite of the Covid 19 pandemic’s impact on our borough, Bronx businesses remain viable and even more want to move into our business hubs. While our unemployment rate has been impacted due to the cuts in the service industry, we expect that many more will be back on the job as the city reopens. As a result, we are honoring 12 businesses this year, five of which helped fight the pandemic in our borough. Each will be presented with a citation from Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. Closed event due to Covid restrictions. The virtual experience includes a behind-thescenes look at our flamingos and an up-close look at our penguins and Inca terns enjoying their afternoon snacks. BUILDING THE BRONX TROLLEY TOUR 2pm – 3pm In celebration of Bronx Week 2021, hop aboard the Woodlawn Conservancy Trolley and visit the final resting places of individuals who built The Bronx. Many did so literally, like Robert Moses, the infamous urban planning czar who orchestrated the building of roadways, bridges and parks. Others who rest at Woodlawn contributed to the borough’s reputation as either figures of popular culture or as holders of political office, such as Fiorello LaGuardia. A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is remembering those we lost to COVID-19. Last year his office created a virtual memorial for Bronxites. Today they are taking action to make sure Bronxites get vaccinated for loved ones that are still with us. You can go to his website and share a short story of a family member or friend that you lost to COVID on the virtual memorial. Use #Bronxremembers #whyIvax to share a picture and why you got vaccinated that will encourage others to do the same. COVID DAY OF REMEMBRANCE 5:30pm – 7:30pm Join the Montefiore Einstein Institute for Clinical & Translational Research for an exciting discussion with our experts on the important role The Bronx community has played in Covid-related research studies and clinical trials, which has led to advances in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Covid-19. We will be sharing an overview of The Bronx Covid-19 experience as well as leading a lively panel discussion where our experts will address any participant questions. HOSTS 22ND BRONX BANKERS BREAKFAST 9am – 11am The Bronx continues to grow and transform as a result of the continued investment of Bronx stakeholders, financial institutions and businesses. As a result, billions more were invested in our borough. BICNY continues to propel small business equity into The Bronx, and statewide. The keynote speaker, Philip O. Ozuah, MD, PhD, President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, the largest employer in The Bronx, will address financial leaders, business owners, real estate brokers, and other professionals on the current financial environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The borough has experienced positive growth in the past decade. We will show how BICNY’s SBA 504 program is working on behalf of The Bronx. SATURDAY, MAY 15 BRONX WEEK GRAND FINALE 12PM—6PM We will mark the end of The Bronx Week Celebration with a Drive-in concert and awards presentation for our 2021 Bronx Walk of Fame Inductees: Joe Conzo Jr., Sal Abbatiello, and Kid Capri and performances by Frankie Negron, Ja Rule, Coro and DJ Ted Smooth. POLITICAL, RELIGIOUS, EDUCATION & COMMUNITY LEADERS HEALTHY LIFESTYLE WALK 12pm – 3pm Lifestyle Lifespan movement has inaugurated New York Healthy Lifestyle campaign last year to help promote healthy lifestyle among all New Yorkers. The mission is to make New York among the healthiest state in the nation. And no place needs this campaign more than The Bronx. Consistently ranking 62nd out of the 62 state counties is intolerable. This walk is therefore designed to bring leaders as healthy lifestyle role models in The Bronx. The walk will take place on Grand Concourse, from Mosholu Parkway to 161st Street. BRONX SOLE: BRONX HISTORY RUN & WALK 10am – 12pm We are a running and walking group who teach Bronx history while being active (#not62). There is a level for everyone as we offer a walking group, two run/walk groups and two running groups. The event is free and for all ages. We depart and run or walk to two or three locations in The Bronx. We stop and give the history and then head back to the park we started from. WILD: ENTR'ACTE 12pm – 5pm Jeremy McQueen’s Emmy®nominated Black Iris Project presents “WILD: Entr’acte”, the third installment of a four-part ballet, documenting and amplifying the voices of justice involved young men of color as they struggle to break free from systemic injustices that permeate their communities. Transforming young men’s personal stories into an artistic dance work, this cutting -edge contemporary ballet is led by a creative team of primarily Black artists from The Bronx-based Black Iris Project. Part 3 of the series, entitled “The journey home”, is a live performance and bike excursion which will lead attendees through various areas of the South Bronx for outdoor performances highlighting the history of The Bronx and the stories of justice involved youth.
