Bronx Week Calendar of Events Dear Neighbors, I am excited to announce the arrival of our first Bronx Week celebration as your new Bronx Borough President! This is a time for us to celebrate, highlight, and amplify the cultural institutions, communities, restaurants, and people that help shape the mosaic of our borough. This occasion is made even more special this year with our theme of “History in the Making”.

It will be an exciting time in our borough, and I am so happy that we will get to celebrate with all of you that have helped to make these events successful and monumental. You have showed up and showed out and we will not disappoint you this year.

My office, the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (BOEDC) and The Bronx Tourism Council have curated some amazing events for our residents and families to enjoy that pay homage to what has been done in the past, and we have included a Silent Disco at Woodlawn Cemetery and Skate Party at Williamsbridge Oval to our list.

I hope you will use this calendar as a guide to explore our borough during this time of celebration and partake in each activity from May 5th – May 15th culminating with the induction of honorees to our Bronx Walk of Fame on May 14th and the Bronx Week Parade, Street Festival and Concert on May 15th.

Bronx Week celebrates the best of our borough – our veterans, seniors, educators, parents, entertainers, youth, business leaders, healthcare professionals, volunteers and everyone else that has helped to make this borough a great place to live and has a vested interest in seeing us move forward. It has been a challenging two years as we attempt to recover from the devastating impact COVID-19 had on our city, but my office has worked closely with the BOEDC and The Bronx Tourism Council to ensure this year`s Bronx Week is memorable and highlights the best of our borough. I am truly honored to serve for such a time as this and to be a part of this moment in our borough`s history in the making.

TEDxBRONX | 5 PM – 9 PM TEDxBronx is a local conference under the global TED brand organized to promote innovative ideas around technology, entertainment and design. TEDxBronx will feature technologists, entrepreneurs, artists, educators, and community leaders showcasing their experiences from a Bronx perspective. Our theme for this inaugural event, IGNITED, reflects the changes the Bronx has undergone since it was set on fire in the 1970’s and known for "the Bronx is burning.” Economic collapse throughout the borough has since become the breeding ground to rebuild on their own terms and ascend the global stages of science, technology, government, entertainment and sports.

Saturday, MAY 7 BATTER UP | 8 AM – 12 PM Bronx Father’s Taking Action, Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson & DREAM Presents THE Father & Child Softball Classic “Uniting Dads & Kids in our Bronx Community.”

Attention all fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and male roles models come out on May 7th and compete with your child(ren) at Patterson Playgrounds at our first ever Father and Child Softball Classic. We will be putting together two teams to compete in a friendly 6 inning softball exhibition game. This event will consist of family engagement, organizations tabling and encouraging all fathers to enjoy a great day with their son or daughter. Sports Attire is strongly recommended. Equipment will be provided if needed.

44TH ANNUAL RUN THE BRONX | 10 AM – 12:30 PM Bronx Community College (BCC) will host the 44th Annual Run the Bronx, a community health event that includes a 10K run, a 5K run, and a 2-mile fitness walk along with a run pavilion. BRONX BANDA: LOVE AND RESILIENCE (EXHIBITION RECEPTION) | 5:30 PM – 8 PM Join us in celebration of the Bronx at the Casita Maria Gallery and experience the multimedia exhibition Bronx BandA: Love and Resilience with artwork by Argenis Apolinario, Sabrina Cintron, Baba Israel, Taylor Krauss, Berta Jottar, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, and Redwing Blackbird Theater.

The exhibition centers on the story of 9 piece jazz ensemble BronX BandA, as well as the Bronxites who inspired their music. Using oral histories, video, photography, and newly released BronX BandA album, coloring book and short film titled The Casita Sessions, gallery visitors will experience a diverse mix of storytelling methods celebrating Bronx culture and communities and the music which was created during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the FREE reception, DJ music provided by Grandwizzard Theodore. The new album and accompanying coloring book will both be distributed to visitors for free while supplies last.

La exposición se centra en la historia del conjunto de jazz de 9 piezas BronX BandA, así como en los Bronxites que inspiraron su música. Silent disco or silent rave is an event where people dance to music listened to on wireless colorful headsets. Rather than using a speaker system, music is broadcast via a radio transmitter to wireless headphones worn by the participants. The idea of a silent disco is for people to dance freely and jam out in their own personal little dance parties. MARBLE HILL ANNEXATION | 12 PM – 2 PM Rally the Bronx troops — we are taking Marble Hill! Join the Great and Glorious Grand Army of The Bronx in liberating Manhattan's hostage neighborhood - Marble Hill. Although physically attached to the mainland Bronx, the Marble Hill community is still part of New York county and its residents are left in mass bewilderment. While fellow Marble Hillians cannot vote for any Bronx elected officials on the city and state levels, they still live within a Bronx school district, use Bronx telephone area and zip codes, and are served by its community boards. When The Bronx became its own county in 1914, just a year after Marble Hill was physically attached to it, the great debate as to what was part of Manhattan and what was part of our borough commenced. It was not until 1984 that an act of the New York state legislature kept Marble Hill as a Manhattan community, and thus sticking it to The Bronx for many more years to come.
