WELCOME TO THE BRONX

A MESSAGE FROM BOROUGH PRESIDENT RUBEN DIAZ JR. Dear Friends: Thank you for your interest in my hometown, The Bronx, and thank you for picking up the latest edition of the Bronx Visitor Guide, a publication of The Bronx Tourism Council. This guide and map will help you make the most of your visit to this wonderful borough. Great things are happening in The Bronx. More people are working than ever before, we’ve seen record investment from both the public and private sectors, and our arts and cultural Institutions are as vital as ever. We’ve cut unemployment by more than half, down to 5.5 percent. Workforce participation is at its highest level on record, and 110,000 more Bronx residents have jobs today than when I first took office. For the fifth straight year we had less than 100 homicides in our borough, and this year the number dropped to an all-time low. During the past nine years we’ve seen $15.5 billion in total development, and we’ve developed over 21,000 housing units. We’ve come a long way in The Bronx. The Bronx has so many great places to visit. We have world-class restaurants, some of the best cultural attractions on earth, and shopping destinations that rival any in the region. We have new breweries and distilleries, amazing parks, and are home to the greatest franchise in professional sports—the New York Yankees. There is so much to do in The Bronx, and I hope that this guide will provide you with the motivation to visit and explore the northern borough. If you prefer to view this guide on a mobile device, it is available on www.ilovethebronx.com, the official website of The Bronx Tourism Council. Enjoy your time in The Bronx!

WELCOME TO THE BRONX

A MESSAGE FROM OLGA LUZ TIRADO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I am ecstatic to be publishing the 4th edition of our annual Bronx Visitor Guide! When I published the very first issue in 2015, little did I know that year after year we would have a knew story to tell! Now, more than ever, is a great time to visit our dynamic borough. Our institutions, like the Bronx Big Three (The New York Botanical Garden, The Bronx Zoo and Yankee Stadium), along with some of our lesser known, but equally as amazing, Wave Hill, Lehman Center for the Performing Arts, Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and more, are enjoying recordbreaking attendance. There are lots of great new things going on, as well. Woodlawn Conservancy has acquired a trolley and added a series of fun tours to their itinerary. The Bronx Zoo added ziplining last year and this year is launching a series of themed experiences starting with Boogie Down at The Bronx Zoo, a celebration of Hip Hop culture. New restaurants have opened in the South Bronx offering an array of diverse cuisines. Old institutions like the Bronx River Arts Center (BRAC) have completed construction on their 18,000 square foot building and is officially open for business. Bird watching, summer concerts, fall foliage, winter shows, hiking and biking. To get the latest in what’s happening in The Bronx, subscribe to our eNewsletter GoBronx! Hey! Let’s go to The Bronx!

WELCOME TO THE BRONX ATTRACTIONS SUBWAYS & TRAINS Subway and train lines in The Bronx generally run north-south, and are the best option for getting to and from the other boroughs. The 4/5/6 trains travel to the east side of Manhattan, while the B/ D/1/2 trains go to the west side. Subway and commuter rail maps are available from the station agent at most subway stations. http://www.mta.info Metro-North Railroad commuter trains run about once every half-hour on weekdays and about once per hour on weekends at most stations, providing easy access between Grand Central Terminal, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. http://web.mta.info/mnr/html/planning BUSES Every corner of The Bronx is accessible by bus, and it’s the best way to travel east-west across the borough. The Bronx has two Select Bus Service (SBS) routes, the Bx12 SBS serving Fordham Road and Pelham Parkway, and the Bx41 SBS, serving Webster Avenue. All SBS buses require payment before boarding; keep the receipt from the ticket vending machine as proof-of-payment for the duration of your trip. http://www.mta.info AIRPORTS Of the three major airports in the New York City area, The Bronx is closest to LaGuardia Airport, just across the East River. The best way to get there by public transportation is to travel by subway or Metro-North into Manhattan and transfer at 125th street to the M60 SBS. http://www.panynj.gov/airports/laguardia.html To get to John F. Kennedy International Airport, travel by subway into Manhattan and transfer to a Jamaica Center (Queens)-bound E train. At Sutphin Blvd-Archer Ave-JFK Airport, transfer to the AirTrain for service to all terminals. http://www.panynj.gov/airports/jfk.html For service to Newark Liberty International Airport, travel to Penn Station and board a New Jersey Transit train with service to the airport on the Northeast Corridor Line or the North Jersey Coast Line. http://www.panynj.gov/airports/newark liberty.html

TOURS SOUTH BRONX HISTORIC TOUR: In 1997, The Bronx was designated an “All American City” by the National Civic League, signifying a huge comeback from the terrible decline of the 70s and the 80s. The antici-pated revival has brought converted lofts, new affordable apartments and great restaurants. Bruckner Boulevard, once defined as industrial, is changing rapidly giving us a great opportunity to learn about the history and cultural movement of the Mott Haven and Port Morris areas, the past, the present, and the future. www.bronxhistoricaltours.com
