Mary Hopkin

Dominates NWPA Tour at Black Diamond Article and photo by: Suzanne Smith The NWPA’s fourth tour stop of 2013 was hosted by Black Diamond Billiards in Spokane, WA June 22-23. The tournament was ran on 9 9-foot Gold Crowns. The format was a race to 7, alternating break, 9 ball, with a race to 6 on the B side. With the Ultimate 10 Ball Championships being hosted that week in Tunica, MS, several of the tours’ top players were not in attendance. A few NWPA players had their highest finishes on tour; however, the tournament was won by someone that is no stranger to winning ways. Mary Hopkin defeated Natalie Seal to win her second tour stop of the year, catapulting her into first place over Liz Cole. We would like to thank our title sponsor Mueller. With such a low number of attendees and a long trip home for many on Sunday afternoon, tour staff decided to play down to the final six on Saturday night. Earning final four slots on the A side automatically guaranteed Sunday action and featured Natalie Seal vs. Alisha Rogers and Mary Hopkin vs. Alicia Kvasnicka. Natalie defeated Alisha R 7-5, while Mary defeated Alicia K 7-3. Final four slots on the B side, only two would continue onto Sunday included Suwanna Matarazzo vs. Amber Foster (Spokane favorite) and Elaine Eberly vs. Suzanne Smith. Both Suwanna and Elaine defeated their opponents 6-4 to advance to Sunday rounds. Sunday morning, play resumed with B side match ups: Alisha R vs. Suwanna and Alicia K vs. Elaine. Both Alisha and Alicia advanced by the scores 6-4 and 6-2, respectively, and then faced each other. On the A side: Mary and Natalie squared off for the hot seat. Mary defeated Natalie by the narrowest of margins to earn her spot in the final, while Alicia K was busy advancing past Alisha R by the score of 6-4. Natalie was eager to have an opportunity for the rematch and quickly defeated Alicia K 6-1. The final was one race to 9. Mary was shooting solid and after the tie at 1-1, took a lead and

never really looked back, capitalizing on several position errors and scratches by Natalie. At 6-2, Natalie made quick work at the ends of two racks bringing the match to 6-4, but that was the last bead she would move as Mary ran out racks 11 and 12 from the 4 and 5 with ball in hand. Then, in rack 13, what appeared to be a golden opportunity for Natalie to gain another rack (a rattled 7 by Mary), Natalie pocketed the 7, but scratched giving Mary ball in hand on the match winning 9 ball. Congratulations Mary and Natalie, definitely great shooting. Great tournament ladies! The NWPA’s fifth tour stop of the 2013 season will be hosted at The Parlor in Bellevue, WA on August 10-11, 2013. Good luck to all of the NWPA ladies who will be participating at the BCA National Championships in Las Vegas in July. Stay Cool. Thanks again to our sponsor Mueller Recreational Products.
