LAS VEGAS, NEVADA The 32nd BCA National 8-Ball Championships, May 9-17, 2008 - “The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World!” Year after year the BCA National 8-Ball Championships is touted as “The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World!” and for good reason. The BCA National 8-Ball Championships is the longest running, amateur tournament presented by a national pool league. The first championships were staged at the Dayton Convention Center in Ohio in 1977. The tournament’s growth has required larger and larger venues and The Riviera Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, provides over 100,000 feet of ballroom and meeting space. Pavilions overflow with an ocean of Tour Blue Simonis Cloth, dotted with Holly Robinson Super Aramith Pro balls on Diamond “Smart Tables.” The hotel’s room quota quickly sold out to ardent pool fans, and their families, 60 days before the event. Predator has joined forces as a Platinum Sponsor and added a selection of their POISON CUES as prizes for the amateur players. The billiard industry recognizes the BCA National 8-Ball Championships as the place to be in the month of May. No other tournament unites more amateurs, professionals, league operators, referees, vendors, and spectators in a shared experience that commands the title of “The Greatest Pool Tournament in the World!” This year, the playbca.com production surpassed member’s wildest dreams. More than 7100 players, from 17 countries, competed in 20+ events in the hunt for $750,000 in prize money. And, if that’s not enough, the BCA Pool League members, men and women alike, love pro pool. Hence, the longstanding tradition of bringing the world’s elite players to Las Vegas. This year, BCA National 8-Ball Championships hosted the biggest field of back to back pro action in its history. Matchroom Sports delivered its World Pool Masters tournament. Dragon Promotions, in association with Diamond Billiard Products and Playbca.com, relocated the Predator 10-Ball Championships, and The Action Report, sponsored by OB Cues, drew record crowds with their big money, one-on-one TAR Pit marathons. The league, also, offers pros a place to play. Says CEO Mark Griffin, “You can’t get so good in our league that you don’t have a place to play. Your Donald Harp membership doesn’t become invalid” So. it was no surprise when WPBA champion Kelly Fisher won the Women’s Grand Master Singles, or that Diamond Derby City Classic winner Jason Kirkwood is the 2008 Men’s Grand Master, but what about

Noel Campos? Noel, from Modesto, California, won the Women’s Open Singles, and $6000...from a wheel chair... and, she’s legally blind! Griffin’s new bride, Sunny, showed joy as she captured the Women’s Player Member Singles title. Had Sunny gotten a few pointers from her new hubby? Before he took reins of the league, Mark actually had time to hit a few competitive balls himself and had achieved Master status in the league system. Mike Williams and Susan Williams Chandler overpowered Mary Rakin & Colin Mazaikain in the Open Scotch Doubles. Mary, surely, had one of the most memorable days of her life; she had also secured second against Noel in the Women’s Grand Master Singles. Randy Goettlicher, who had been freely educating league members at Sunny Griffin

Ramesh Gokhul

the Cue-Tech Pool School all week, finished runner up against Don Harp in the Super Senior Singles. Randy, obviously, practiced what he preached. Men’s Open Singles titlist Danny Barnes pocketed $11,000, while Sam Kirby got$8,000, and Shayne Morrow $6,000. Hey, that’s $25,000 right there, and more than most Pro events. Who says pool doesn’t pay? Canada’s Tyler Edie exacted revenge on being last year’s runner-up as he won the BCA Pool League 9-Ball Challenge. Demi Jelatis from

Brooklyn Park, MN took second. Laura Smith corralled Efren, Bustey, Mexico’s Rafael Martinez, Allison, Gerda, and a slew of other pool celebs at The Billiard Education Foundation’s annual Challenge of the Stars. Members had too much fun (BCAPL continued on page 24)

STARS WERE SHINING AT BILLIARD EDUCATION FUNDRAISER Pros help raise funds for junior billiards The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) held their annual “Challenge the Stars” fundraiser on May 13th at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The BCA Pool League (BCAPL) National 8-Ball Championships and the 8th Annual Predator International 10-Ball Championships were held at the Riviera that week, providing opportunity for participation by both pro and amateur talent. Over $4,000 was raised through “challenge the pro” matches and auctions to help support junior billiard programs and scholarships.

from: Gene Miller

Thirteen pros accepted challenges from highly skilled amateurs who were among the 7,000 players competing in the BCAPL National 8Ball Championship. Participating pros were Francisco Bustamante, Dominic Esposito, Allison Fisher, Thorsten Hohmann, Melissa Little, Rafael Martinez, Cathy Metzinger, Caroline Pao, Stefano Pelinga, Efren Reyes, Tom”Dr. Cue” Rossman, Adam Smith, and Laura Smith. All challengers received a certificate and an autographed souvenir photo taken with their pros. Challengers and spectators alike participated in the silent auction and raffle made possible by the

generous donations from dozens of industry supporters. Donating companies included Ozone Billiards, Viking Cue Mfg, Cuestix International, PoolDawg.com, Frank’s Center, Omega Billiards, Chalkeys by Ken, Predator Products and Poison Cues. Mark Griffin of Diamond Billiard Products provided pool tables from the BCAPL tournament. The BEF charity event was made possible with the help of a team of volunteers including Keven Engelke, Brent Johnson, Shanna Lewis, Dave Merrill, and BCA Pool League referees. BEF President Tom Riccobene served as Master

of Ceremonies. A complete list of those who helped make this event possible is available on the BEF website at www.BilliardEducation.org. All proceeds benefit the BEF scholarship fund and junior programs throughout the year. The Billiard Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization committed to furthering the standard of excellence and leadership within the billiard community by engaging in activities related to the education and cultural advancement of tomorrow’s leaders.

R.I.P. NINE BALL JOHN

The phone call I got from Allen Jones Wednesday evening, May 14, was news we both knew was inevitable. John Hayes had died that morning. He had taken ill several weeks earlier, and we hadn’t heard his jovial voice for a long time. Big John certainly played more of my tournaments than anybody else, and I can vividly remember my first encounter with him. It was early in 1991 and The Great Entertainer had just opened. At our Monday USPPA tournament he came up, shook my hand and said “I’m John Hayes, and I’m putting in Doug McCumsey and Bud De Soto and myself. What is it, ten bucks?” John enjoyed doing favors for people. After I moved our USPPA tournaments back to Family Billiards, he could see how busy I was so he

began taking advance signups, collecting the money for me. He was the only person who ever did that, and he enjoyed it. He once gave me two full rolls of breakpot tickets, saying, “I just had these laying around and I know you can use ‘em.” A tournament director deals with every type of pool player, and it’s the characters with a sense of humor who create the best memories. I will always remember Big John’s ever-present sense of humor. A conversation with John was always punctuated with amusing comments, and who could forget his hilarious artwork on all those score sheets? We have lost a good friend.

SALEM TOUR STOP

from: Chris Rogers and Ford, Tournament Directors

On April 26th and 27th the Northwest Women’s Pool Association held their second of seven tour stops for 2008 at The Cue Ball in Salem, Oregon. It’s considered a favorite event by many of the players for several reasons,

(l to r) Mary Olson, Cindy Sliva, Chris Rogers (Tournament Director), Jim Lebold (Owner, The Cue Ball)

notably the amazing playing conditions on the many original Brunswick Gold Crowns. The Cue Ball sells, installs, and maintains tables from a store located in the pool room itself, and it follows, that they would keep up their own tables to a high standard. If you want to check it out, they hold a monthly tournament called “Win Jim’s Money”, Jim Lebold being the owner. There were twenty players on Saturday morning (the price of gas is not helping turnouts), but a smaller field can mean tougher competition and no room for error and there were some great players who didn’t make it to Sunday. The six who did make it were Cindy Sliva playing Mary Hopkin to hill - hill before closing to get to the point match. She faced Mary Olson, who beat Jessica Orth 7-3, and Cindy then got on the point by winning 7-4. Mary H then squeaked past Tamre Rogers 7-6, but Jessica fell to Liz Cole 7-3. Liz, who lost her first match, had rolled through the B side and next got Mary H 7-5. But it’s hard to win a tournament after losing the first, and Mary O got her rematch in the finals by beating Liz 7-4. It looked like the finals would be a rout when Mary took a quick 6-1 lead in the single race to nine, but a couple of mistakes by Mary and some strong outs had Cindy first tying it at 7, and then taking the last two to win her first ever NWPA tournament. Thanks to everyone who came to watch, the entire Cue Ball staff, and the players for making our job so easy. The next stop is at Uncle Jack’s in Lynnwood on June 15th and 16th followed by our first event at the brand new “Golden Fleece” in July. See you there. 1st $335 Cindy Sliva 4th $100 Mary Hopkin 2nd $225 Mary Olson 5/6 $65 Tamre’ Rogers 3rd $185 Liz Cole 5/6 $65 Jessica Orth

ATWELL AND MATAYA SPLIT 8 BALL OPEN By Stephen Spivack

On May 3rd and 4th Malarkey’s Pool and Brew in Tacoma, WA held its first Northwest Bar Box 8 Ball Challenge. The tournament drew 42 players based in a double-elimination 8 Ball race to 5/5 on ten 7 foot Valleys. Fresh off his recent win at the Nighthawk and in early starting form, Glenn Atwell marched undefeated through the A side with wins over Leon Thomas (5-1), a hill-hill thriller over 12th place finisher Raul Abenojar (5-4), Rose Soliz (5-0), Jing Gicoso (5-2), then pre-point handily beating Eddie Glenn Atwell

Carrido (5-2) to wait for the top half of the A side which was owned by Malarkey’s Don Wirtiman who ran off with wins over Jim Boyce (50), Rhiannon Stewart (5-0), Rennie Amadeo (5-3), then beating the surging Cindy Sliva, who impressed everyone early on defeating Jeff Baker (5-0), Larry Lesson (5-4) then winning a squeaker against Doug Enera (54). The point match was a true flop in a sense of words. Glenn defeated Don (5-1) only to wait for the winner of the B side. Eddie Mataya On the B Side players such as Robert Cleveland, Cindy Sliva, Jing Gicoso and Eddie Mataya flourished after wins over Andrea Saenz-Maes (5-4) and Joe Mack (5-0). Robert faced a surging Eddie Mataya who also early on ran the A side beating Don Anton (5-1), Pat Vice (5-0), then controlling and beating Robert (5-2) only to lose the pre-point to Don Wirtiman (4-5). The 4th place match featured both Malarkeys regulars, Jing Gicoso and Eddie Mataya, where early on Jing had the lead but was no match for Eddie who played lights out to defeat him (5-1). Eddie was now to face Don for a tough 3rd place set. It seemed as if each of these players knew it was ‘game on’, as we watched early on as Don took the lead 3 to 1, only to have Eddie cold handedly take control and beat Don (5-4). Entry $15, 42 Players, 100% bar matched = $1,260 purse 1st & 2nd (split) $615 Eddie Mataya Glenn Atwell 3rd Don Wirtiman $170 4th Jing Gicoso $110 5/6 Cindy Sliva $ 75 Eddie Carrido 7/8 Dustin Olsen $ 45 Leon Thomas 9-12 Robert Cleveland $ 25 Dannie Stewart Chicago Dan Raul Abenojar Top Woman Kasia Wilcox $ 25

No Cushion/No Carom Runout

San Francisco Billiard Academy www.sfbilliards.com

The final level of the drill is to not let the cue ball hit any cushion. This will require much better planning, especially towards the end of the rack when there are only a few balls left to shoot and you don’t have a lot of options. Once you get your no-rail position working well, try it out in a regular game such as eight ball or nine ball. It won’t work in all situations, but if the table is set up well with no major problems, see if you can get out without touching a cushion. The great champion “Babe” Cranfield, who ran 768 balls in practice, said the greatest feat of cue ball control he had ever seen was a 60-ball run by Ralph Greenleaf. A run that long is not remarkable, but Greenleaf sent the cue ball to the cushion only twice during the 4-plus racks.

The first level of play is to simply pocket all Bob Jewett the balls beginning with cue ball in hand in the kitchen. This is harder than it looks, especially if you happen to be on a small table, but you will eventually find good patterns to get the balls off the table, and it is a feel for such patterns that’s important.

It’s nice to be able to use the cushions for position, but it’s even better to be able to avoid them.

you can read more articles by Bob Jewett at:

This version of the drill was used in Boys’ Clubs competitions in the last millenium, and I met one of the competitors who had run nearly 200. The next level of play is to run out without the cue ball touching any other ball. This is only a small complication. The main thing to learn from this is stop and stun shots which minimize the movement on the cue ball and makes the direction of the cue ball off the object ball very predictable.

This drill is an oldie but a goodie. The setup is simple — just put a ball at each of the 15 intersections of the diamonds, as shown in the diagram. This fills the area outside the kitchen.

ATTENTION NW BCA PLAYERS

Western BCA Begins Its 14th Year June 1st is the start of a new season for Western BCA leagues. There were more leagues, league players, tournament entries and added money than ever before last season and this year should extend the growth of Western BCA. The 11th Annual Regional 9-Ball Championships are scheduled for the week of October 20, 2008. The 14th Annual Regional 8-Ball Championships are scheduled for the week of March 9, 2009. Both of these events will be at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City, Oregon. At the recent Annual Meeting of Western BCA, there were several changes made which will affect some players in the next season. * Players entering Master Scotch Doubles will be allowed to select a partner from throughout the region, just like Master Teams. * Only one Grandmaster can be on a Master Scotch Doubles entry. * The policy of mandating only 2 original league team members on a Men’s/ Mixed Open 8-Ball Team has been amended and has been returned to mandating 3 original members on a Men’s/Mixed Open 8-Ball Team, with hardship exceptions on a case-by-case basis, to be decided by the Board of Directors. The Women’s Open 8-Ball Teams will still have the 2 original members requirement. * For the 9-Ball Championships, the opponent will rack the balls for the breaker. (No racking your own break for 9-ball) * The top 4 Open Men’s 8-Ball Teams and the top 2 Open Women’s 8 Ball teams must play in the Master Team event during the next two 8-Ball Championships if 3 or more players from those team rosters are on a team. This is retroactive to the 2008 8-Ball Championships. At the Annual Meeting, Bill Henderson was re-elected as President and Darcy Moss was elected as the new Vice President. A new Board of Directors was voted in. The 7 Directors are Mike Jensen, Sam Rabito, Terry Ludwig, Cindy Doty, Stacy Sherman, Andrew Monstis and Sassy Campbell. Player fees will remain at $10 for the coming year. Sam Rabito will remain as Tournament Director and Darryl Farley will continue as Head Referee. UPA Players Take Stand Against WPA United States Professional Poolplayers Association Takes Stand Against World-Pool Billiard Association PHOENIX, AZ (May 5, 2008) - The United States Professional Poolplayers Association (the “UPA”) announced today that the organization and its players plan to take a stand against the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) effective immediately due to its “medaling” within the United States men’s professional pool scene. The UPA, as an organization, officially received word just hours ago that a press release was being provided to media from the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) concerning a change in ranking and player communication overview. In the press release by the BCA, it stated that the decision to “manage the men’s professional rankings system and player communications duties” was to be performed by the BCA. The President of the UPA, Frank Alvarez, commented that “it is regrettable that I was only informed of this hours before the release. I sit on the BCA/WPA committee and this topic somehow was not presented to the very player’s association that is directly involved. The UPA is officially recognized by the BCA as the ‘governing body’ and yet we were not consulted on this matter nor informed by the BCA of any such release. Obviously, we will need time to get to the heart of the matter and deal with it properly. The BCA is a trade organization and not a player’s association so this not only undermines, but underestimates the wishes of our Touring Professionals. It is apparent that the UPA membership as a whole is not being treated equally or with the same respect as its counter part the Women’s Professional Billiard Association (WPBA). Understandably, the player’s are outraged and we believe this matter will do nothing but impair U.S. pool if not resolved in the near future. It is my position that the will of the UPA is simply the will of the players.” In response to both the BCA’s recent decision and the behavior of the WPA, effective immediately, UPA players will not plan to attend the 2008 Qatar World Open 9-Ball Championships currently scheduled for June 27-July 5, 2008. Some of the top names in the men’s professional pool scene have provided statements on this issue as follows: “I take it as a personal offense that any association would seek to undermine our ranking system. We are the players in the U.S. and I will support my country’s association. If the WPA wants American players, then I am certain that we will be shown the respect that we deserve from WPA representatives.” - Rodney Morris, UPA Lead Representative “This is our tour and our ranking system. No one has the right to take this away from us. Honestly, I am shocked and disappointed that we are treated with such disrespect.” - Tony Robles, UPA Representative “In my opinion, we have the strongest ranking system in the world and we are not about to let that go.” - Tony Crosby, UPA Representative “I’m in full support of the UPA - I believe in what it stands for and that the power should be in the hands of our player association.” - Shane Van Boening, UPA Touring Professional If you would like to learn more about the UPA organization, our website is located at www.upatour.com or to contact us directly with questions, please call (480) 353-6747 or email info@upatour.com

An Open Letter in Support of the UPA from: John Lewis - Executive Director ACS

Bravo to the UPA for standing up to the recent “BCA Resumes Control of Men’s Rankings, Communications” release! The UPA - United States Professional Poolplayers Association, is an affiliate to the ACS - American CueSports Alliance. The ACS - a membergoverned association - fully supports a pro men’s player union in the United States and their right to administer and govern their own affairs. When issues arise that negatively affect the players, too often there’s a lack of activism. Regardless of - who is promoting a pro men’s event - who claims to be a governing body - who advertises themselves as the next savior of pool, it is paramount that the professional pool players in the United States remain focused on their own union, whose sole purpose is to look after their interests. In recent years, that has been the UPA. Some may criticize the organization for doing too little, but such critics should never lose sight of one vision the UPA is “the men pro player’s thing” to which they can look to when outside forces make decisions that affect their future without including their “union” in the decision-making. The Billiard Congress of America trade association should only be supported for what it is - a trade association that is necessary to the industry. However, since 2004 when the BCA divested itself of its player programs, it has unfortunately insisted on continuing to adopt a governing body stance, with the also unfortunate backing of the world-governing body for the sport of pool, the WPA - World-Pool-Billiard Association. The WPA is a credible world sports body, but even a credible body can make poor decisions. The WPA interference in United States pool growth by their continuing to recognize a trade association whose entire board of directors is trade people, is a black mark on the world-governing body. Unlike all the other confederation members of the WPA, the BCA is NOT a sports organization! It has no sports structure. If it walks like a trade association and quacks like a trade association...IT’S A TRADE ASSOCIATION! No amount of coaching from the WPA to be otherwise is going to change the BCA’s true profile. The ‘Committee’ formed by the BCA of various Player Member organizations (which included the UPA) to somehow satisfy the WPA and to somehow address their complete lack of player membership, has shown itself to be (Support continued on page 15)

Spring Session 2008 Results We are at the close of another calendar league year, which consisted of 3 sessions: summer, fall and spring. Teams from each session participating in the 58 person open format that win the title of ‘division champion’ earn entry into the annual Local Team Championship (LTC). In addition, any team that finishes ‘high points’ in their division, prior to session play-offs, also earns a seat into the LTC tournament. The same applies for any team in the (8 Ball) 3-5 person open format during the summer and fall sessions, as long as their team participates during the spring session in the (8 Ball) 5-8 person open format. The 8 Ball LTC will be held from May 27 – June 1 and 9 Ball LTC from June 6 – 8 at Malarkey’s Pool & Brew in Tacoma. Teams that win this tournament advance to the National Team Championship (NTC) in Las Vegas. The amount of teams that can qualify for the NTC is based on local area team count. This year, 3 teams from Pierce County in the 8 Ball format and 2 teams from the 9 Ball format will compete to win the 1st place prize of $25,000 ($15,000 for 9 Ball). Following are all the teams that won in the final’s match and earned the title of ‘division champion’.

Is There Such A Thing As Natural Talent? By Roger Long, Advanced Certified Instructor

What is natural talent? I posed that question to my pool team as we assembled for practice one evening. I got a quick retort from one of my teammates who said, “Natural talent, Roger, is a 36-inch vertical leap!” Well, that answer may have held water had my question been in reference to the game of basketball but it wasn’t. And I failed to see then, as I fail to see now, where a 36-inch vertical leap could ever help anybody play better pool. So what does natural talent really have to do with playing the game of pool? Roger Long If you think about it, you can probably remember many times that certain pool players have been said to possess natural talent. After hearing that comment many times myself, I became curious as to its real meaning. I finally came to the conclusion that natural talent has almost nothing to do with playing good pool. Now before you get all in a huff, please allow me to explain. Most of us possess the same physical attributes and same mental capacities as any of the top players in the world. We have two hands, two arms, two legs, two feet, and two eyes. We also possess average intelligence; and that’s really all that’s necessary to play this game at an above-average level. So why is it that some players start playing much better, much sooner than others? This is what I believe: Some players advance more rapidly than others because certain things come easier to them. They start out possessing a natural feel for the game. They learn quicker. They don’t struggle with understanding the laws of physics and geometry that are involved in playing pool; they pick those things up easily. And their hand/eye coordination is already present without the necessity of a lot of training. Being born with that aforementioned ability is what we would call “natural talent.” But does the absence of natural talent necessarily mean that one is limited as to the level of skill they can reach? No, it doesn’t. It simply means that players without natural talent will have to work longer and harder than the naturally talented player in order to grasp the same concepts and master the same skills. The point that I am trying to make here is that (in my opinion) natural talent has been overrated in the game of pool. Desire and discipline will take any player a lot further in pool than natural talent will. And a lack of natural talent can be overcome if a player wants to work hard at developing acquired skills. And even the naturally talented players still have to work at honing their skills. So don’t allow yourself to be intimidated just because you may someday have to face a player who is “naturally talented.” Besides, the natural talent that player possesses may only be a 36-inch vertical leap!

Team Play Samm Diep (c) March 2008

Either you’re a team player or you’re not. Pool is not a team sport. When you’re at the table, you’re a lonely soldier. You may play on a team with four other guys that want to win just as badly, but the outcome of your single game is not dependent upon anyone but YOU. No one will fumble your pass, no one will run your ball out of bounds, and no one is capable of getting your object ball in the hole but YOU. That’s the beauty of our independent sport. We have the freedom to make our own decisions and create our own destinies. However, I can’t deny that there’s a magical thing that occurs during team match play. When five players get together and share one single goal; when you selflessly put the needs of your Samm Diep team above your own; when great play infectiously spreads amongst your peers, it’s truly poetry in motion. You check your egos at the door. You find yourself playing some of the best pool of your life and you don’t even know where it came from. You’re not doing it for the glory. You’re fighting to not let down your cohorts. You want to share the sweet victory together. It’s truly a special energy that can not be manufactured. Don’t get me wrong. Of course there are the glory hounds and the megalomaniacs, but I’m referring to that mutual altruistic endeavor of equally

carrying each other through the finish line. There’s just no other feeling that compares to winning a national team championship. Of course singles’ success is rewarding, but it’s a completely different conquest. Having the support of your teammates behind you can sometimes help us execute more confidently. I’ve learned so much about pool and about myself while playing on a team with champions. I’ve been the weakest link and I’ve been a stronger one. Regardless of expectations, being a part of a team is a commitment to accept and support one another through good times and bad. It’s so spooky to me how often the momentum simultaneously shifts on both tables during team matches. Turnovers happen concurrently without the two teammates even knowing it. There might be a scratch on the break on one table and a missed 8 ball on the other table. Just like that, the ball’s in your court again. Team energy is simply a beautiful thing. So, the next time you’re playing a team match and your teammate doesn’t get out when they should have. Try to be supportive. You’d be amazing at how infectious your positive energy can be. What would you want to hear - or not hear? Team play can be fun. Enjoy it. PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT POOLTIPJAR.COM. You can take polls, view article archives, and read tournament and training updates. An Open Letter in Support of the UPA the ‘window dressing’ of which it was suspected. In the United States, the women pros have a strong player’s union, and the WPBA serves that function very capably. But the men pro player’s in the United States should never lose sight of their best interest in supporting their own player’s union, and the UPA currently serves that purpose! When the BCA announced a new ranking system that will affect the men pro players in the United States without consultation or input from representative players from their player’s union, the trade association showed its true colors.

(continued from page 9)

Players in all member-governed associations should not support such actions. Let your voices be heard! Support the UPA on this issue and discourage the BCA trade association from any involvement in governing the sport. Especially with the current overall weakness in the billiard industry, we need the BCA to fully focus on trade issues. The BCA should be working with and fully supporting Player Member organizations such as the UPA, instead of needlessly meddling with player issues that it is simply not organized or suited to responsibly handle.

14and1.com Crowns Champ The 14and1.com Nationals MAIN EVENT! Atlantic City Billiard Club, NJ True double elimination tournament format was used for the 14and1.com Nationals Main Event. The top 2 finishers in all leagues nationwide earned an invite into the main event. What a battle it was!! Come Friday morning all players were focused and ready! 14.1 Players from 8 states converged on Atlantic City to try and become the 1st 14and1.com National Champion through qualifying in their local sanctioned league. John Downie showed poise and skill getting to the hill on the top side of the winners bracket by methodically controlling the table throughout his matches. On the bottom half of the winners side Tom Acciavatti was showing the same poise and skill as well, it looked like he may cruise to play for the hot seat match with John until he ran into Joe Stern III who was also playing well. Joe caught an early lead in the first few racks that was added to his 45 ball spot given by Tom. 3/4 the way through the match with Joe leading comfortably things turned as Tom was able to get John on 3 fouls and knock back that seemingly large lead, then Tom chipped away and pulled it out to get to the hot seat match with John Downie sending Joe Stern III to the 1 loss side. The hot seat match was a classic battle between 2 knowledgeable players who do not relinquish the table easily. John managed to send Tom to the 1 loss side in a well played match. Waiting there for Tom was Al Muccilli who was playing very well and just got done putting Joe Stern III out in 4th place. The match was a classic with 2 old school style players in battle! With Tom giving up 30 balls going to 140 he pulled out that victory 140-131 to make the true double elimination finals and getting another chance at John Downie. At 9:30 Saturday night we were lagging for the break in the finals of the 14and1.com Nationals between John Downie (B+ handicap) and Tom Acciavatti (A+ handicap). Tom gives John 45 balls on the wire going to 140 and we are

off! Tom has to beat John twice in the true double elim format. The first match saw John get cold from sitting and never really get going as Tom cruised to win the first match 140-96. Next up is one game for the cheese! John now starts to get back in stroke a bit and manages to stay even in score with Tom throughout but is fully aware Tom has caught the spot, somewhere around 100 balls each on the score Tom makes a great long break shot while he is on a run but WAIT! The cue ball is creeping toward the corner! It drops in and Tom scratches!. John now knows full well its opportunity time as he eyes out the table, then proceeds to methodically put together a 29 ball run, from there they get into safety battle and Tom gets another opportunity after winning the safety battle. Tom is now 114 and John 129, Tom is at the table with a few balls sticking out, he gets a bit to straight on the ball he wanted to use to break open the rack and elects for a combination that will break the balls open, you could hear a needle drop in the AC Billiard Club as Tom gets down to fire at the combo, it hits the point! and the balls are now wide open, John now gets up and he had to make a couple tough shots, at 3:30am Sunday morning John Downie runs out to become the 1st 14and1.com National Champ! s St ra ight Pool Sam’s Stra raight Griffin Promoting New Pro Events Sam’ Mark Griffin Makes the Pros an Offer They Can’t Refuse. Industry leader Mark Griffin has announced his intention of promoting new pro events. Due to the current lack of direction, and compounded by leadership that has been unable to protect player welfare, Griffin guarantees generating $200,000+ in added prize money in 2009. Plus, he presented players with a plan for continued growth that provides players economic security for their future. Troubled by lack of genuine sponsorship, players not getting paid at association sanctioned tournaments, ranking snafus, event scheduling conflicts, etc., Griffin agrees that the pros are in worse shape than ever. Mark Griffin “When I see the state of affairs for the pro players, it makes my blood boil. I have been around this sport for 45 years. Recent setbacks have sent pro player economic opportunities back to the stone age,” fumes Griffin. Professional sports, take golf for example, have a strong amateur base. Pool is no different. Griffin, as CEO of the BCA Pool League, has 60,000+ members. This infrastructure offers the pros an opportunity, through cross promotions, sponsorships, and membership drives, where the amateur base can help fund pro events and allow both the opportunity to grow. As always, there are a few conditions. “I will welcome player input, but no entity will tell me what I have to do. We are spending considerable time, and money, on pro player behalf. To protect our investment, and the pros, we will probably have to initiate a new association where player’s ideas and concerns can be addressed.” Mark has a spotless reputation in the industry. His success with the BCA Pool League, Diamond Billiard Products, etc., speaks for itself. He sees the offer as a stable way for pros to make a living. “This concept is, obviously, a work in progress. I had been talking with some of the more high-profile players who had expressed their concerns and, suddenly, this all came to a head and something just had to be done. We all agreed that, by working together, this plan could work. “Hey, I can see that players could even have health insurance in the coming years.” What a concept! Attention pros. So that you can be kept in the loop, please forward your contact info to markg@playbca.com. Include a phone number.

Ruben Silva (Colorado Springs, CO) marched undefeated through his bracket to the finals, while Jeff McKeon (Colorado Springs, CO) - despite an earlier round 9-4 loss to Silva - emerged from his bracket to the finals. In the tourney “last 8”, Jim Barber (Colorado Springs, CO) eliminated Mark Morgan (Colorado Springs, CO) 7-3, while Nick Smith (Colorado Springs, CO) dominated Adrian Ayala (Pueblo, CO) 7-1 - both Ayala and Morgan finishing 7-8th. Both Nick Smith (5-7) and Jim Barber (2-7) fell at 5-6th positions in the next round at the hands of Nate Smith (Colorado Springs, CO) and Bobby Hibbetts (Wheeling, WV) respectively. Hibbetts, whose only loss came at the hands of Ruben Silva earlier, kept his momentum by dumping Nate Smith at 4th place by a 7-2 margin. Hibbetts recovery ended on the hill in the next round, courtesy of a 7-6 loss to once-defeated Jeff McKeon. The tourney finals match was a one-race-to-11 finals, and Jeff McKeon took a small lead over Ruben Silva and never looked back in his 11-7 title win! By virtue of Nate Smith being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free singles entry into the 2008 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas - courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors J. Pechauer Custom Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the Pechauer All American Tour. Mark Haddad vs. Shane Van Boening On Friday, May 2, 2008 Denver was on the edge of their seats watching Mark and Shane compete in their scheduled pool exhibition held at the Wynkoop B r e w i n g Company in downtown Denver. At one Mark Haddad, Shane Van Boening point it looked like Shane was going to run away with an easy victory being ahead 10-5 in their race to 15. But, Mark then came alive winning the next few racks making it 10-8. Back and forth they went and in the end Shane pulled in the final score of 15-12. The crowded house loved the show, autographs, and challenges! Thanks guys- great job! Earlier that Friday, WPBA Touring Pro Melissa “The Viper” Little and Shane stopped by the Rocky Mountain Deaf School to sign autographs for the 40 little kids who attended. The kids were between the ages of 612 and most had hearing impairments. Shane spoke to them about pool and how pool has changed his life in the most positive way and assured them that they too could follow their dreams if they worked hard enough. With the help of a translator Shane’s first words spoken to the kids were; “My name is Shane Van Boening, and I am 97% deaf, and I am a World Champion Pool Player”. Over all it was a great experience for everyone!

Pagulayan Wins PartyPoker Masters ALEX PAGULAYAN

ALEX PAGULAYAN IS the 2008 PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters Champion as he came from behind to beat Mika Immonen 8-6 in the front of a packed crowd at the Riviera Hotel, Las Vegas . The Filipino was 6-3 down at one stage and looking in severe trouble but the match turned on an illegal break by Immonen whereby he pocketed a ball but failed to carry two other balls past the headstring. From there Pagulayan cleared to table to gain the necessary momentum and he became stronger over the closing stages to take victory. “This was like winning the World Championship for me. I’ve always wanted it but I’ve finally broken the ice, “ said a jubilant Pagulayan. “This is 9 ball and I couldn’t get too upset because I didn’t get a chance. I thought if he runs the set, then he runs the set but I knew that if I got a chance I would need to focus and concentrate and do the best I can. “I really didn’t think I’d won it until the last 9 ball dropped but there were lots of people who like me watching and that was good for me to have that support,” he added. Pagulayan made two balls from the opening break of the final and although Immonen got to the table, the diminutive Filipino took the rack for the early lead. In contrast to the earlier semi-finals, there was another break that produced three balls but Pagulayan could not capitalise as he missed the 2 ball. Immonen took advantage to run out and level it. A golden break from Immonen, as the cue ball kicked the 9 ball home, saw Immonen take the lead and he almost did the same again in the fourth, as the 9 ball hung in the pocket. The Finn pocketed the 1 ball and then made an easy 2/9 combination to go 3-1 ahead. The 1 ball rolled into the corner pocket off the next break but Immonen made a bad miss on the 3 ball as he seemed to hit it too hard. Pagulayan over hit his shot as he ran out of position on the 4 ball but he redeemed the situation with an excellent cut, gaining good shape on the 5 ball. From there he ran out to take the score to 3-2 to Immonen. The Filipino made a schoolboy error in the next as he hit the 4 ball prior to hitting the 2 and with ball in hand, Immonen ran out to restore his two rack lead at 4-2. The Finn took the next rack to move to 5-2 and all the pressure was now

on Pagulayan. He responded well as he ran the next rack to reduce arrears. There was disappointment for Pagulayan though as he scratched off the break in the next. The balls were laid out nicely and Immonen completed an easy run out to take his lead to 6-3. Immonen made an illegal break in the next as he pocketed a ball but did not bring the requisite two others past the headstring. The punishment of loss of visit allowed Pagulayan back to the table and he made a tidy run out to get within two of Immonen. Now playing with renewed vigour, he delivered a good break that gave him a chance to get right back into it and he duly responded as a break and run took him to within a rack of Immonen. Now on a roll, Pagulayan broke and ran the 12th rack to draw level at 6-6. Breaking from the centre of the table, Pagulayan deposited the 1 ball into the centre pocket and played a fine long reverse cut to down the 2 ball. In the zone now, Pagulayan completed his fourth rack in a row to move to the hill at 7-6. Just when he needed some luck, Immonen returned to the table as Pagulayan scratched on the break as he drew the cue ball into the pocket. There was disaster for Immonen as he drew the cue ball all the way down table and into the corner pocket as he went from the 1 ball to the 2. With ball in hand, Pagulayan worked his way through the table and as he planted the 9 ball, he let out a yell of joy as he became 2008 PartyPoker.net “It was brutal, why did it have to happen there?” said a disappointed Immonen. “I was able to get a good lead but the illegal break was the real turning point as it gave him the opportunity to get back in it. “He had some nice layouts but he played well and probably deserved to win. But that’s the way it is sometimes. I’m getting more consistent and the No.1 spot will come sooner or later,” he added. 1st $20,000 Alex Pagulayan 2nd $10,000 Mika Immonen 3rd $5,000 Francisco Bustamante, Ko Pin-Yi 5th $2,500 Rodney Morris, Imran Majid, Tony Drago, Corey Deuel 9th $1,500 Thomas Engert, Mark Gray, Bruno Muratore Shane Van Boening, Ralf Souquet, Niels Feijen Christian Reimering, Daryl Peach
