Spokane, Washington On April 13-14 McQ s Billiards held our spring edition of the Spokane 9-Ball Open. The field was a little light on competitors (48 to be exact) but in no way was it light on talent. Our friends from the north proved their metal again by placing 5 players in the top 8, not a bad percentage since only 7 Canadians came to play. Mike Vidas kept

Canada s win streak alive and counting. It marks the 6th time in 3 years that a player from Canada has won this tournament. I may have to change the name to the Canadian 9-Ball Open, or put a bounty on all Canadians. (Just kidding of course, because I love these guys.) Not only is the talent level extremely high, but also on a

Ellensburg, Washington, April 5th at 10:30 AM the W.A.M.O.A. trucks rolled into the parking lot of the Inn. The pool tables were unloaded and set up in the banquet room. A juke box two trivia games and lots of fun were delivered. The thousand pound tables were leveled with my staret level. Also set up at the event was a complete pool cue repair shop, with a very nice show of cues and cases thanks to Sean Finney of All About Cues. We had a cue raffle and Otis Stapleton of Spokane won a really great cue. Congrats to Otis. (Washington State continued on page 6)

Horsfall Challenged from: Russell Pettis

Reno is on the horizon and Hard Times is the following week. Hard Times this year has guaranteed $5,000 to the winner of the Nine Ball event and $2,500 for the winner of the One Pocket with a $1,000 bonus to any player who can snap off both events. We at Hard Times would love to have

John Horsfall

Mr. Horsfall and some of the other great Northwest players here. So we have an offer. If Mr. Horsfall would like he can play a $1,500 match on the Monday following Reno on Table Four at Hard Times. We are doing this because Table Four is featured in the upcoming movie Pool Hall Junkies . We felt that we could Corey Deuel promote the movie and give John the chance to make some expense money. He can play our good friend Corey Deuel.

Tony T-Rex Chahan Takes Hard Times By Storm

from: Russell Pettis

Well we really liked the article last month on John Horsfall. He deserves all the credit in the world for being such a good player and a great sportsman for the game. This tournament director had to play him twice in Tacoma a few years back and after resting on the point for a couple of hours, Mr. Horsfall beat me so bad twice I seriously thought about quitting. Of course, you know that only lasted about a week. Well this really just begins to tell my story. We in the north part of California are beginning to wonder the same thing about a 20-year-old kid from Sacramento. We like to call him T-Rex , but his real name is Tony Chahan. All Tony has done in the last two months is win the Hard Times monthly Jamboree two months in a row. That feat has never been done in the history of Hard Times. For anyone who doesn t know, the monthly jamboree is a weekend event that is a One Pocket tournament on Saturday with a Nine Ball tournament on Sunday. Folks that is a hell of a feat, four tournaments in a row against real tough competition.

Special Award Braden Murphy received a special award from Hard Times Billiards and the U.S.P.P.A. for his outstanding play in the month of March. Braden placed second and third and raised his average three points. Good Job! OTB

Northwest Open 3 Cushion Tournament from: Ed Brasfield

Once again the Tacoma Elks Lodge #174 hosted the NW Open and over the three days many close matches were shot by some very tough competitors. In the Red Flight Neal Olson went undefeated while Jim Krei went undefeated in the White Flight. Also in the White Flight, Mark Sullivan had only one loss (Krei). A Division Finals: Jim Krei again went undefeated to take 1st, Neal Olson 2nd, Mark Sullivan 3rd and Dave Law 4th. The A TEAM event was won by Krei, Sullivan and Bill Sweet. Salvy Hernandez had the high run of 7 for the A s . B Division was handled easy by Ken Higgins with no losses and Bill Pushman of Oregon took second. Ken also had the high run of 6. B Division Team Champions went to Ken Higgins, Tammy Neal and Ed Brasfield.

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (April 1, 2002) The American Poolplayers Association (APA) has reached an agreement with Diamond Vending & Promotions to become the official table provider of the APA. Beginning this year, Diamond will provide Diamond Smart Tables at all national championship competitions held in Las Vegas. We want all of our national tournament qualifiers to have the opportunity to compete under superior, standardized playing conditions. At our national championships the highest level of competition we believe the quality billiard equipment produced by Diamond, Simonis and Aramith will enhance our members level of play, said APA President Renee Poehlman. In addition to the Diamond Smart Tables, Simonis 860 billiard cloth will be official table cloth of the APA, and will be used on all Diamond Smart Tables at the national championship events in Las Vegas. Super Aramith Pro billiard balls will become the official billiard balls of the APA, and will be used on all Diamond Smart Tables at all championship competitions as well. Diamond is committed to offering the finest quality billiard products for the enjoyment of all pool players from the casual novice to the seasoned professional, said Chad Scharlow, Vice President of Diamond Vending & Promotions. We recognize the APA as the governing body of amateur pool and, along with Simonis and Aramith, we will meet every specification and criteria established by the APA for amateur competition. APA amateurs deserve the superior playing conditions that only the Diamond Smart Table can provide. The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League (8-Ball) and Molson 9-Ball League throughout the United States, and as the Canadian Pool League in Canada. Nearly 200,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9-Ball league play. Camel is the APA s national 8-Ball Team Championships sponsor, and the official tobacco product of the APA. Molson, the official beer of the APA, title sponsors the Molson 9-Ball League and national 9-Ball Team Championship. The APA is generally recognized as the Governing Body of Amateur Pool, having established the official rules, championships, formats and handicap systems for the sport of amateur billiards. One of the keys to the success of the APA League, administered by local League Operators, is The Equalizer , the APA s handicap and scoring system that makes it possible ® for men and women of different playing abilities especially beginners to compete on an equal basis, much like they do in golf and bowling. At the national level, the APA guarantees more than $1 Million in national tournament prize money. This consists of the $500,000 Camel 8-Ball National Team Championships, the $200,000 APA 8-Ball Classic Singles Championships, the $100,000 Molson 9-Ball Team Championship, the $100,000 APA 9-Ball Shootout and the MiniMania tournaments, which paid out more than $200,000 during the National Team Championships in 2001. For more information on the APA, contact them at 1-800-3-RACK-EM or visit the official APA Web site at www.poolplayers.com.

(continued from the front page)

personal level they are all very nice people. In a game with so many attitudes and egos it s great to see nice guys finish first. Mike Vidas, another top-notch player from that hot bed of talent known as Vancouver, B.C. rolled through the field undefeated. After an opening round win over Michelle Gamble 9-1, Mike went on to defeat Jeff Jimenez 9-4, Zak Leech 9-7, Alan Ima 9-7, Nick Kruger 9-2 and Dan Louie 9-3 in the winners final to claim the drivers seat. Dan Louie started off with an opening round win over Terry Rohrman 9-7 and went on to defeat Loy Long 9-4, Scott Chandler 9-6, Chris Iverson 9-5 and Simon Pickering 94. After the loss to Mike in the winners final, Dan went on to the b-side to face Chris again. Chris had opened his tournament run with a first round bye. He then went on to defeat David Williams 9-7, and Brady Golan 9-8 before his loss to Dan Louie. Sent to the b-side he beat Jason Marcoulier 9-3, Randy Camantigue 9-5, Nick Kruger 9-3, and Brady Golan 9-7 before his 6-9 loss to Dan Louie in the b-side finals to finish 3rd. So our championship was set Mike Vida vs. Dan Louie, U.S.A. vs. Canada, good vs. well good since both of these players are class A in the sportsmanship department it sucked that one of them had to lose. Mike broke out to an early lead 4-1. Down but in no way out Dan slowly crept back in. With a few very tough outs, and a timely 9-ball break, suddenly the match was tied at 8. Due to my management responsibilities, I missed the final sequence. Thinking that the match would go two sets I was taking care of my wait staff. Upon my return Mike is shooting the 7 ball and with no trouble in sight he pockets the 8 and 9 to make it 6 in a row for Canada. Great shooting gentlemen. Again the tournament was a blast, the players were all great and I received many compliments. Myself, Nita and my staff all work hard to put these events together so it s great to hear good things from the players. Remember to mark your calendars for Labor Day weekend. We will be doing a 96 player 9-ball tournament and a 32 player 8-ball tournament at the same time. So watch for the ad. 1st Mike Vidas, Vancouver, BC $1,000 + $190 side pot 2nd Dan Louie, Seattle, WA $ 700 rd 3 Chris Iverson, Seattle, WA $ 500 4th Brady Golan, Kelowna, BC $ 300 5th Simon Pickering, Vanc, BC $ 180 Nick Kruger, Pentieton, BC $ 180 th 7 Alan Ima, Vancouver, BC $ 100 Randy Camantigue, Seattle, WA $ 100 9th Stacy Mallot, Tri-Cities, WA $ 60 Jason Marcoulier, Bend, OR $ 60 Wayne Boyd, Gr Coulee, WA $ 60 Pete Quande, Missoula, MT $ 60

The Association for Pool (TAP) was well represented at the Rally in the Valley TAP tournament at the Super Billiards Expo March 15-18 in Valley Forge, PA. Oregon had two teams, one from Salem and one from Klamath Falls that competed in the Dream Team Event. Along with the Dream Team event, 8 of the team members competed in the individual tournaments. While the teams competed well it took a hill hill match to knock them out of the tournament. Congratulations goes to Sandra Nez for her great shooting as she finished in Second Place in the all ladies tournament. I watched the championship match she played against Andrea Hess from Ohio. What an exciting match to watch. They both shot very well and very smart. There was a lot of pressure and they both handled it well. I can t say enough about how proud of Sandra I am. She represented the state of Oregon and the Klamath Falls area with a lot of great shooting and more importantly, first class Sportsmanship. Sandra wasn t the only successful participate from Klamath Falls. John Gower also did extremely well as he finished in a tie for 17th place in the toughest tournament (5, 6 & 7 handicap bracket). I would also like to congratulate our brothers and sisters from the state of Washington for their excellent showing. In the ladies singles Cheri Partridge finished in 9th place. In the 5, 6 & 7 tournament Ken Burkell finished in 17th place and Dan Wright finished in 5th. In the 2, 3 & 4 tournament Ken Morano finished in 2nd Place and last but not least the Washington team Not for Poking finished in 9th place. Overall the Northwest competed very well and we had one hell of a good time. There was a lot of great shooters at the Rally in the Valley and the Sportsmanship and friendships, both new and old made the trip even better. I can t wait for next year s event as they will be expanding the size, Payouts and events for 2003.

Great Falls, Montana - April 12-14 TJ s Lounge second Annual 8-Ball Challenge was a huge success. Seventy-one players paid the $30 entry to show their skills in this $2000 added event. Players found conditions with Simonis 860 and triangle cue balls well worth the extra $10 green fee. Players from all across the North West and Canada made the competition as exciting. Dave Martin won seven straight matches on his way to First Place. Dave s road to victory was at the expense of several players Doug Scorpack, Jack McFetridge, Tyler Edey, Clay Henrickson, Edwin Montal, & Sean Mc Kay twice. Sean Mc Kay played well with his only losses to Dave 7-4 75. After losing to Stan Tourangeau in the winners side TR Olson beat Stan to take third from the one loss side with Stan finishing fourth. The fifteen Ladies had their own event hosted at Classic 50 s with $500 added to the purse. Some of the areas best Ladies vied for the top spots. Jane Plant went undefeated to take 1st Place. Kathy Dick took home second place with her only losses to Jane. During the finals several players were playing around with some trick shots and such. Edwin Montal came up with a stroke shot for everyone to try. A three-rail draw shot, and took a stroke from Hell. After several attempts it was suggested player s pay a quarter to try with the winner getting the quarters. Billy Goodwin of Buffalo Bills Billiards cosponsor of the event decided to make it even more fun and threw down a $50 bill. A few dollars was added by a couple other players and with many, many attempts the pot was almost $120 when it was finally made. Thanks to the many sponsors of this event: Maria s Restaurant, World of Time, Z 93 Radio, Tiny Town Daycare, Mail Boxes Etc, A to Z Lock & Key, Eklunds Appliance, City Lights, Super 8, Big Sky Hypnosis Center, TJ s Lounge and Buffalo Bills Billiards. Table Talk with Mary Price

Daysie May The month of celebrating life and lives. Dancing around the Maypole (perhaps really a cue implanted after a particularly lovely shot) is an ages old means of celebrating the life force of spring, the renewal of energy after the long depths of winter. Industrialization has diminished our awareness of the flows and ebbs of life. Now, many of us do not dance at all. Appropriately, the demise of the month is our national day of remembering those who have gone before us. This year will be a particularly poignant Memorial Day, filled with the breadth of the losses we faced nationally, and the depth of the loss to those family members left behind after 9-11. We all find many different ways to remember, or carry, or promote the goals of those we have loved, who are now gone. Mostly, we let them live in our hearts and those quiet safe places within our spirits. Pool players, however, have a tradition I think is truly wonderful. We have memorial tournaments, promoting the game we all love in the name of the missed one, who also loved the game. Some are longstanding and well-attended. Some are new, sadly; some get dropped for lack of continued sponsorship, not necessarily lack of players. Some are in the memory of great players, some for players who loved the game regardless of their own skills. What better way to salute the dedication of the missing ones? As long as the tourneys run, there is a statement that someone still cares and survives to play. It is a sad thing, to me, when good reputable memorial tournaments are discontinued because the houses out of which they have always been played no longer care enough about either the missing one or the players who love to come play the namesake tournament. I understand that change is the only thing that never changes some things just change at a different speed than we might wish. I wish you the sweetness of memories, the gladness of being and the peace of acceptance. Be safe and don t leave us yet there are enough tournaments for now

THE SWING IS EVERYTHING

We are at peace with ourselves, one with the universe and one with God. Open minded to observe mistakes without emotion. Correcting and recorrecting our fundamentals, always moving forward towards perfection, which is closer to the Lord. Our direction is to focus at perfecting the swing, the fluid movement, the graceful beauty of the stroke. It

becomes our major center of attention. Nothing else matters. The swing is everything. Balls fly in the hole when the swing is right. It is a thoughtless thought, an effortless effort. Running balls now becomes an expression of the imagination through the patterns chosen and the shots selected.

OROVILLE POOL LEAGUE from: Kathi Giles

Oroville, Washington The Oroville Pool League consisted of 26 teams playing in 2 divisions, 13 teams in each division this year. Not only are the establishments of Oroville involved, but the Chesaw Tavern and the Tonasket Tavern also had teams that were included. This made for all kinds of friendly rivalry. League started in November and ran through the middle of February, making sure that all of the teams in each division played each other. Then the top six teams in each division played off to see who would be Division Champion. The Division Champions then played off to see which team would be League Champion. Here are this year s results. Division 1 Sponsor Captain 1st Place Peerless Lounge Murphy Morefield 2nd Place Pastime Tavern Kathi Giles 3rd Place Chesaw Tavern Dan Engelbretson 4th Place Peerless Lounge Ryan Milligan 5th Place Pastime Tavern Dennis Frazier 6th Place Oroville Eagles Kevin Mathis Division 2 Sponsor Captain 1st Place Pastime Tavern Lew Taylor 2nd Place Peerless Lounge Bob Dahl 3rd Place Tonasket Tavern Kim Reyna 4th Place Oroville Eagles Ron Wisener 5th Place Chesaw Tavern Bill Nicholson 6th Place Max s Parts Plus Dan Hand During the division play-offs the teams in Division 1 finished in the same order as they started. Division 2 play-offs had a couple of upsets though, with the 5th Place Chesaw Tavern team beating the 3rd Place Tonasket Tavern team and the 2nd Place Peerless Lounge team defeating the 1st Place Pastime Tavern team. This resulted in having the Division 1 Champion Peerless team, last year s League Champions, playing the Division 2 Champion Peerless team for League Championship. Needless to say, it was a Peerless Lounge team that won, but this year it was Bob Dahl s Division 2 team that took it! Congratulations you guys!!! It was an exciting year and we hope to see everyone back next fall to make it an even better league. Oroville Pool League Championship Team

Cue Ball Rolling Up and Off the Cues

any more. Have fun with this one!

Here is a proposition shot I actually saw at a carnival once. Place two cues across the width of the table as shown. Place the tips underneath the rail and resting on the bed of the table. Then place the cue ball on the tips end of the cues. Gripping the two butts of the cues, one in each hand, while facing the cue ball, lift the cues up off of the rail by where you are standing, a couple of inches. Slowly open the cues till the cue ball starts rolling towards you. With even pressure close the cues together till the cue ball rolls up and off the cues and onto the floor. This takes a little practice till you get the feel of how much pressure to put on the cues to keep the cue ball rolling. When I won two large stuffed animals in a row they wouldn t let me play

The Pool Table Guy Leo Hancock

I would like to buy a pool table (3 1/2' X 7') but I am afraid I don t have enough floor space. I have never seen anything that gives a area required for the installation. I hope you can provide me this information because I really want my own table to practice on. Thank you.. Merv

Q

The area needed for any table depends on how YOU play and what YOU are willing to shoot with. A 3 1/2' x 7' table generally needs about 13' x 16' to accommodate a 58" cue. However, we supply many 52" and 48" cues to home players who really want a table but can t come up with the optimum space. For a 52" cue the size would be 12' x 15' and for a 48" cue 11 1/2' x 14 1/2'. This assumes a 38" x 76" playing area + the length of the cue to each side + 6" of draw to each side. This formula would give us an optimum space for a 58" cue on an 8' table at 13 1/2' x 17' and a 9' table at 14' x 18'. One thing you have to remember when talking to anyone in the business is there are many styles of players out there. What is true for one player is not for another and this is a perfect example. A competitive player puts way more importance on the cue he/she uses than a home player who sees the game as a social pastime, neither needs are unimportant. I had a customer who insisted on putting a 4 x 8' table in a room 10' wide. The 48" cues get more than a workout! If you are serious about how you play, I would recommend that you use this formula to find the size you need for a table: Measure the playing surface area (the area inside the rails). To both the width and the length add the length of the cue to both sides. Then add the space you want to draw the cue back to both sides and there is what YOU need. New Shaft Gives More Angles to Shooting Stop and think for a moment The only reason cue sticks are round. Let me repeat that so you clearly understand. The only reason cue sticks are round is because they can be turned out on a lathe very quickly. Curl your index finger as though you are grasping your cue. What

O

? or ? shape do you see? Now imagine your backhand stroking (or swinging) as some put it. 1. Is your elbow in tight against your body? 2. Does your hand or wrist twist while stroking the cue? 3. Can you detect any side-to-side misalignment with your cue? 4. Would you consider your final delivery stroke a perfect pendulum follow through? If you answered no, to one or more of these questions perhaps you should at least try a triangle cue. After all what do you have to lose? More important what do you have to gain. This new design will keep a new player from developing bad habits. Best of all it may break any bad habits a seasoned player may have developed. Realize one thing (the stranger if feels in your hand, the more you probably need it). Think about this, 100% of the out come on every shot, depends on 100% of everything you do before the shot. Period !!!

I ll Take That Bet (continued from page 8) a gut full of the petty bickering, sharking and back-stabbing that permeates any sport where ambition is involved. Upon returning to my room I also observed a fresher approach to the game. He just wanted to have fun and be around friends. He started playing the Monday and Thursday nine-ball tourneys and after 14 years was playing pretty damn good using a different house cue each week. The night before he died he bought a high end custom Hearn from me. He showed the new cue to all his pals, bought a few rounds of beers and was as happy as I d ever seen him. He ran 3 and out on Fudsy to take the drivers seat and 4 and out on Jimmy Spears to win the tourney. The next morning he didn t show for work and his supervisor found him at home, dead of a coronary, dressed for work with a pot of coffee brewed. Bruce went out a champion and he left the planet doing what he did best and having fun at it. There are worse ways to go. He had rekindled his love for the game and introspective as he had reaffirmed his faith in his fellow man/woman that in spite of the negativity that surrounds our sport, there is a positive side of comradery, sportsmanship, honor, loyalty and a love of the game that can indeed, transcend all of the negatives. We all will make the passage out of this life to God knows what or where, and God ain t telling us, just giving us a few clues. Bruce left in good form and super stroke; an Old Montana Boy that never had the desire to leave Big Sky Country for fortune or fame. I never knew such a player; he never cheated, never threw a match, and always shook your hand when he lost. He was a humble winner and never bragged about his triumphs. To all of us that loved him first as a humane being and secondly as a pool player, there is a void that can only be filled by remembering his grin as he laughed, Rack em up, you turkeys . I hope if there is a pool heaven that Wimpy steers him clear up there. If so, the ring games just got a little tougher. Rest in Peace Old Buddy, Your friend, Cue Ball OTB

7th Annual Tom Scott Memorial

by: Johnny Siefke, Local player and proud supporter of this tournament

March 23-24, 2002 Libby, Montana It was time once again for a good many pool players from near and far to converge on Libby. More specifically the Mint Bar and the V.F.W., all with one thing in mind, try to claim a portion of the prize money and see who would stake claim as Champion in the mens and womens divisions. It all started at the V.F.W. Post 1548 on Friday night the 22nd of March as several players had already made it to town and took part in the Mini Tournament. The top three finishers in the mens division were as follows: 1st Gib Koch (Kalispell) 2nd Andy Jackson (Pinehurst, ID) 3rd Colter Landt (Helena) after battling through a field of twenty-four. The top three finishers in the womens division were: 1st Jane Plant (Belgrade) 2nd Mary Garcia (Butte) 3rd Patty Dunning (Libby) after stroking through a field of fourteen. Saturday morning saw the beginning of a long day of play as fifty-eight men stroked away in an attempt to qualify for Sunday s final sixteen. This took place on four brackets of (15) in two flights of 30, one flight started that morning and the second around five p.m. At the same time thirty-two women attempted to shoot their way into Sunday s final eight, as they fought it out on two brackets of sixteen, one in the a.m. and one that afternoon. Double elimination, race to four, ball in hand rules was the format for Saturday s play. The top four players from each bracket in the men s division found their way to the sweet sixteen and the top four women from each bracket made up the elite eight. Sunday s play was a race to five, double elimination with all players starting fresh, regardless of a loss from Saturday. Top 16 Men: Calcutta 1st $514 Shannon Gibson, Great Falls, MT $440 2nd $293 Tauno Wainiopaa, Creston, BC $331 3rd $224 Don Lundy, Kalispell, MT $220 4th $119 Dennis Brown, Creston, BC $112 5/6 $ 89 Joe Horner, Pinehurst, ID/Tony Etchechoury, Post Falls, ID 7/8 $ 70 Tim Scott, Libby, MT/Dave Garcia, Butte, MT 9/12 Mark Johns, Creston, BC/Cliff Lorengo, Butte, MT/ Cowboy Bob Kollasch, Post Falls, ID/ Jerry Shuler, Post Falls, ID 13/16 Mike Amundson, Libby, MT/Korey Kangas, Whitefish, MT/ Johnny Siefke, Libby, MT/Gib Koch, Kalispell, MT Top 8 Women: 1st $334 Jane Plant, Belgrade, MT $286 2nd $250 Mary Garcia, Butte, MT $214 3rd $166 Morgan Steinman, Hamilton, MT $143 4th $ 84 Mary Price, Helena, MT $ 71 5/6 Cheryl Rosean, Kalispell, MT/Gloria Scott, Kalispell, MT 7/8 Rayla Albert, Libby, MT/Shellie Mitchell, E Helena, MT The thirty-two women, is the most that has taken part in a given year thus far, and what made it even better was the number of great caliber players. Including two State Coin-op Champions and a couple of runners-up from the State tourney, as well as a handful of Libby s finest female shooters. We want to thank everyone who participated in the tournaments over the weekend. We also held a second chance open tournament at the Mint on Sunday afternoon as the finals were played at the V.F.W. The top finishers in the Second Chance: Colter Landt (Helena), Judy Lorengo (Butte), Tyler Scott (Seattle & Libby), Steve Plant (Belgrade). A special thanks to the two bars who played host, (the V.F.W. and the Mint) and of course thank you s go out to their respective staffs. A big thanks to Bert Stoltz of Beasley Amusement for his help in all of the table moving, set-up and prep as it became somewhat of an ordeal. Due to the fact that we practically had to beg, borrow, buy and steal the extra tables needed to support this size of a tournament, eleven tables in all. Many thanks to those folks who helped to supply these tables. In closing it was a terrific weekend of pool, and a hell of a party, as the happy go lucky Butte Fun Bunch provided us with a great deal of entertainment along the way. Hats off to all the people involved in putting this thing together; Tim Scott, Patty Dunning, Johnny Siefke, Doug and Margi Carr, and several others who may go unmentioned, but most certainly not forgotten. A special thanks to Brian Kair, who somewhat took over the spot of M.C. without the title. General consensus conveyed to me from just about every player who came, was we will be back next year and they plan on bringing more players with them. We here at the Tom Scott Memorial want to say thanks to all involved and for everyone s support and of course we hope to see everyone here again next March. OTB

The Greatest Players of All Time 2002 BCA Hall of Fame Ballot from: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development

August 19, 2002 Colorado Springs, CO - The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) is pleased to announce the candidates for the 2002 BCA Hall of Fame ballot: Loree Jon Jones (age 36): Loree Jon Queen of the Hill Jones was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and began playing in her father s billiard room at age 4. She entered the World Open Pocket Billiard Championship at age 11 and, by age 15, was the Women s World 14.1 Champion (1981 and 1986). She has been nominated Player of the Year five times by Pool & Billiard Magazine and 3 times by Billiards Digest Magazine. She has represented the sport on national TV talk shows many times. Among her other titles are World 9-Ball Open (1984), B.C. Open (1987, 89, 90), BCA U.S. Open 14.1 (1989 and 1992) and WPBA National Champion (1990). In 1993, she won four WPBA Classic Tour events, the WPBA Nationals and the WPA World 9-Ball titles. In 1995, she was the first female to break the $100,000 mark in a single year prize money. Edwin Kelly (age 63): Mr. Kelly was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, and earned the nickname Champagne Eddie because of his smooth playing style and elegant attire. He entered his first tournament in 1963, placing second to Mr. Luther Lassiter on ABC TV. In 1965, he won the World 9Ball Championship. In 1966, he won both the World One-Pocket and World Straight- Pool titles. The following year, he placed second in the Invitational World Open 14.1 Championship and, several months later, won the International One-Pocket title. In 1969, he won the L.A. Open World Pocket Billiard (14.1) title and, in 1971, took both the World OnePocket and All-Around Championships. In 1985, he unretired and won the Nevada Open 3-Cushion Championship. In 1991, he won the Super One-Pocket Championship, giving him titles in four different games, in four decades. Jim Rempe (age 54): Jim King James Rempe was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was U.S. Masters 9-Ball Champion in 1970, World AllAround Champion in 1972, World 9-Ball Champion in 1972 and World 9Ball Champion in 1972-74 and 1980. In addition, he holds more than 80 major championship titles in One-Pocket, 9-Ball and his favorite game, Straight-Pool. He was instrumental in introducing pool instruction to Europe and for three decades has frequently traveled to Europe and Asia under the title Ambassador of Pool , winning international tournaments and holding instructional clinics to promote the sport. His leadership is exemplified by his successful effort as captain of the victorious U.S. team in the 1999 Mosconi Cup competition. Efren Reyes (age 49): Efren The Magician Reyes was born in Pampanga, Philippines, and was a star in his home country well before 1985, when he won his first tournament in the U.S. He has been awarded the Philippines Legion of Honor, the Outstanding Filipino Award from the Jaycees and is a Gold Medal winner in the Asian Games (9-Ball) and Southeast Asian Games (Snooker). In 2001, he won the richest first prize in pool history: $163,172 in the Tokyo 9-Ball Championship. He is also a champion at Rotation and Balkline. His many wins include the 1995 Pro Tour Championship, 1995 PBT World 8-Ball, 1999 Derby City One-Pocket, 1999 ESPN Ultimate Challenge, 2000 Camel Pro 8-Ball, the 2001 Masters 9-Ball and numerous other titles from 1985 to today. Earl Strickland (age 41): Earl The Pearl Strickland was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He holds numerous national and world 9Ball titles. He has won the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship five times, more than any other player; only one person has three wins, no one else has won more than twice. He won the WPA World 9-Ball Championship in 1990 and 1991 and holds nearly 100 tournament championship titles, having appeared in the final round of tournaments over 300 times. In 1996, he ran 11 consecutive racks of 9-Ball (in tournament competition), winning one million dollars. Though known almost exclusively as a 9Ball player, he has run 408 balls in Straight Pool and won the Riviera Pro 8-Ball Open in 1999. He was team captain for the victorious U.S. team in the 2000 and 2001 Mosconi Cup competitions. (continued from the front page) Cindy Doty, of Longview WA, had an impressive string of strong victories over her opponents, beating Kat Harrison (7-0), Terie Reichmuth (7-0), Jeri Engh (7-4), Julie Valdez (7-2), and last tour stop champion Mona Remedios (7-5) before losing her first match to Jeanne. She then beat Mary Hopkin (7-4) to move on to the final match. Jeanne maintained a tremendous drive of wins, plowing through every opponent she encountered, defeating Liz Schwartzreich (7-5), Linda Carter (7-3), Mary Olson (7-5), Andrea Saenz-Maes (7-6), Sarah Josie Leroy (7-1) and Cindy Doty (7-5). Cindy Doty came back from her previous loss to Jeanne, with a strong win over Mary Hopkin, and very much determined to pull out a win in the finals. The final match was to be a battle of the titans, where skill, mental strength and ambition were equally matched. Jeanne and Cindy traded wins evenly across the first four games (2-2) with Jeanne then making a strong push ahead to gain a (42) lead. As poised and determined as ever, Cindy pushed for a comeback, winning the next game (4-3). Despite the tremendous effort, Jeanne stood firm, taking the next three games Cindy Doty to win and sweeping the entire tournament as champion. Jeanne s spoils from this incredible victory included a paid spot at the WPBA Midwest Classic and a $529 cash prize! The top 12 for the tournament were as follows: Jeanne Crowell, Bandon, OR, $529 + paid $500 entry fee to WPBA event 1st 2nd Cindy Doty, Longview, WA, $423 Mary Hopkin, Richland, WA, $317 3rd th 4 Tamré Geené-Rogers, Bothell, WA, $168 5th/6th Sara Josie Leroy, Newberg, OR Mona Remedios, Vancouver, BC, $128 7th/8th Patricia Hamilton, Bothell, WA Jo Woodward, Kent, WA, $85 9-12th Emily Pham, Bothell, WA, Andrea Saenz-Maes, Tacoma, WA, Julie Valdez, Portland, OR and Natalie Wiita, Monroe, WA, $63 The NWPA s second tour stop showed continued growth and success with an impressive 39-player field and an extremely efficient event. There were players from as far as Canada, Idaho, Wisconsin and New York to compete in this event! The NWPA attributed much of this success to the great showing of new playing members from Oregon: Martha Hartsell (Eugene) Diane Krausse (Eugene) Kendra Marcoulier (Bend), Karla Tias (Warm Springs) and Jeanne Crowell (Bandon). Other new players were Jeri Engh (Osceola, WI), Elizabeth Jensen (Boise, ID), Becky Rowell (Taholia, WA) and Natalie Mary Hopkin Charley (Taholia, WA). The event also owes its success to the fine hospitality of Q Street co-owners Dennis and Sharon Blackwell and Jeff and Kim Mishler. They were fabulous hosts, offering up all 15 of their newly refinished 9ft tables, with free practice time from 8-10am each morning, as well as fine food and atmosphere. Thanks to the great organizational efforts and attention of Tournament Director Ted Woodward and Assistant Dan Coffman. Players unanimously commented on their appreciation and marvel over such a smoothly run tournament. Excitement for this tournament was anticipated simply for the fact that it was a qualifier. But excitement mounted as word spread about media coverage for the event as well. Heather Doherty, NWPA s media coordinator, arranged for full local media news coverage of the event. The NWPA was very pleased and thankful for the great pre-event feature coverage from television news stations, KMTR, KVAL and KEZI. Players interested in seeing a copy of the stories (featuring Martha Hartsell, Julie Valdez and Diane Krausse) may inquire at the NWPA website at: www.nwpatour.com. Comments from almost all players spoke to this success and the sense of fine competitive spirit and fun. The next NWPA tour stop will be held June 22-23, 2002 at Shotze s in Everett, Washington.

Getting Shape

Some of us never stop to ask for directions Position. Shape. When we can, it s our ticket to paradise. When we cannot, it s our ticket hell. In pool, nothing is more important than having control of the cue ball. Most of the shots that we miss are due to letting go of the cue ball. Most times when we miss shape, it is also due to letting go of the cue ball. What is letting go of the cue ball? Letting go of the cue ball means that you are surrendering control of the cue ball to the elements and conditions of the table. I should control the cue ball, not the table. The table will provide me with pot luck position. To avoid pot luck position, I should always be aware of four factors that affect position: a) The shot I am facing b) The distance to the next shot c) The route or path to the next shot d) Any and all obstacles in between Along with these factors come the following questions: Where am I going? How am I going to get there? Should I use any english? Should I use a soft, medium or hard stroke? Am I following or drawing back? Am I utilizing left or right hand english? Am I using running or reverse english Do I need to use a rail? If I do need to use the rails, how many? Is there anything in my way? If there is something in my way, how am I going to get around it? Do I need to take an alternate position route? The list can go on and on, but these 12 questions cover just about everything. Now think back to the last time you were faced with a tough shot and near impossible position. Chances are that you didn t ask yourself half of these questions. You probably stabbed wildly at a shot and either got lousy shape, or hooked yourself. I did it yesterday. I don t do it all of the time, but I m not immune to it, and neither are you. The questions are important because they guide you through the factors, therefore guiding you through the conditions that you are facing. When looking at the questions, we can break them down into different categories so that we understand exactly what it is that we are asking ourselves. Should I? Am I? Do I? If I? If there is?

Where am I going? How am I going to get there? Let s start with Should I. It is a determining question that we ask ourselves when we are faced with more than one option. Am I is a selfexamining question we ask as if we are performing a checklist. Do I is another determining question we ask ourselves when we are looking to choose the best option out of many. If I is a cautionary question. We ask this when we are searching for any bumps in the road along the path we are examining. We ask this when looking for any hazards along the path the cue ball will be traveling. If there is is the solving question we ask ourselves when we have identified the hazard, and we take the appropriate measures to avoid it. That brings us to the two most important questions, Where am I going and How am I going to get there? Where am I going? Where are you going? Are you going the length of the table? Are you stopping the cue ball? Are you taking three of four rails? Next time your shooting with a buddy, ask him Where are you going with the cue ball? Chances are he ll tell you how he s going to get there. Why do I know this? Because most players skip through the PLANNING STAGE. He can tell you how he s going to get there, but he hasn t got a clue as to where he is actually going. One of the keys to playing pin point position is: IDENTIFY YOUR PREDETERMINED DESTINATION It is extremely important to know exactly where you want the cue ball to go. Every top level player will tell you that being a hair or two off target can mean the difference between running the rack or racking the balls. How am I going to get there? Once you have identified where you are going, then we will look for a way to get there. Remember, we plan, then execute. We never do this in reverse, and we never do both at the same time. They are two different and separate tasks. How do the questions relate to the 4 factors? Factor #1: The shot Where am I going? How am I going to get there? Should I use any english? Should I use a soft medium or hard stroke? Am I following or drawing back? Am I utilizing right or left hand english? Am I using running or reverse english?

Factor #2: Distance to the next shot Where am I going? How am I going to get there? Should I use a soft, medium, or hard stroke? Do I need to use a rail? If I do need to use the rails, how many? Factor #3: The route or path to the next shot Where am I going? How am I going to get there? Should I use any english? Should I use a soft, medium, or hard stroke? Am I following or drawing back? Am I using right or left english? Am I using running or reverse english? Do I need to use a rail? If I do need to use the rails, how many? Is there anything in my way? If there is something in my way, how am I going to get around it? Do I need to take an alternate position route? Factor #4: Any and all obstacles Is there anything in my way? If there is something in my way, how am I going to get around it? Do I need to take an alternate position route? By running through the factors, and the questions, you will learn that getting shape is a process of careful forethought combined with flawless execution. It s no longer pot luck. The factors and questions relate not only to pool, but also in every day life. Take any goal that you have set for yourself and run it through these questions: Where am I going? How am I going to get there? Is there something in my way? If there is something in my way, how am I going to get around it? Do I need to take an alternate route? This is how we can set and accomplish short term goals during practice. Shot by shot, we can enhance our goal setting skills by experiencing the completion of the small tasks we are faced with during each rack. We are not only setting goals, but we are realizing the completion of our goals. Small goals lead to bigger goals. Pin point position is achieved by practicing a structured and consistent pre-shot routine. Simply wishing and hoping for position (as well other stab in the dark techniques) all have one thing in common: The absence of careful planning. Use the steps outlined and watch your accuracy increase.

NEWS ON TAP

Washington Titleholders from: John and Amy Muldoon

A weekend of fun, great pool, over $10,000 in cash and prizes, free trips to Vegas there was no doubt that western Washington TAP players knew how to welcome spring as they played off their Winter Titleholders event. The Association For Pool is currently the fastest growing league in the country, and the Seattle area is no exception for the first time, Titleholders had outgrown all available local establishments, and the action was split between two bars the newly remodeled and expanded Wah Longs Palace of Burien and Goldie s Shorewood of Seattle. Both establishments are known for showing exceptional hospitality to their pool playing customers, and the players were treated to excellent service throughout the weekend. To quote one employee: These were just the greatest bunch of guys we ve ever had in. They were having fun, they were perfect gentlemen they were a pleasure to be around. Good sportsmanship prevailed through the weekend, but it didn t lessen the competition as the players fought their way through the team events, singles tournaments, Scotch Doubles, and, for the first time, a Vegas Board that sent the top two players to the singles tournaments in Las Vegas Nationals, airfare and hotel paid. Thanks to the management and staff at Wah Long s Palace and Goldie s Shorewood, and to all the players who helped out over the weekend Ken Morano, Motown Loialiki, William Waldo, Charles Furst, J R Mailo, Frank LeFevers, and many others. Every player participating in the team event had already placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in their divisions, so it was a tournament of winners, but special congratulations go to the following: Las Vegas Winners Butch Flegal (1st), William Waldo (2nd) Winners of expenses paid trip to Las Vegas, and singles entry into the TAP Nationals. Our Washington players represented us well on the east coast Not for Poking , playing out of Wah Longs in Burien, placed in the 9th-16th place bracket.
