CAN T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG? by: Paul Marquez

Jean Bartholomew, I hate smoking - but I sure love you. Good article! Before we begin, let me state that Julie Burney rocks. Without her help these articles couldn t happen, so if you don t like it, talk to her Double Champion! [Hey, all I do is type them Julie.] I would like to reflect back on some unbelievable people that played this game with passion and class. Players like Rudolph Ponzi, Welker Cochran, Raymond Ceulemans, Ralph Greenleaf, Jimmy Caras, Joe Balsis, Irving Crane, Cicero Murphy, Nick Varner, Jean Balukas, and Jeannette Lee. These people were and are positive ambassadors to pool and billiards. Like most character statements, opinion rules, although I m sure I can find many to agree about this group of champions. It wouldn t bother you to know that all of these players liked to bet some money on themselves, would it? I truly hope not. I ve been guilty of offending pool players that won t bet that water is wet, and to you, I was arrogant and wrong. I apologize! I was taught old school when I was in a new school. Now, let s begin again. Remember when everyone was in action no matter what skill level they were? Remember when there were no A players or B players, just people

matching up and seeing who could win the money? Remember pay ball on a snooker table? Keno? Or line-up straight pool? Can you remember the most interesting rotation game I have ever heard of that combines awesome shot making ability with Chess-like brilliance and 9 ball roll out? Well, I don t remember any of it! I first picked up a cue in the early 90s. It wasn t very long ago that all of these games were played and pool had a different flavor. Pool was a lot different then than it is now. How do I know? Because the history of the sport and the history of the action that still lives in many players around your area! I consider myself a player with some gamble. To me, pool players that get up and do something are my kind of pool players. Yet, things have changed. Tournaments are where players mostly demonstrate their skill and the gamblers are not looked at the same way anymore. I think I understand why both things have happened. The economy, the $5 tournaments, the casinos, video

poker, and the egos hurt some of the pool action. Whatever the reason, the action player doesn t get as much action anymore. Is that good or bad? That obviously is totally an individual s point of view. I personally have come to the understanding that my favorite pool topic is action in the pool hall. I have two objectives in writing this article. One is to recognize thousands of pool players who remember the old days and for them to know that we re listening. The other is to apologize to the people that fell in love with pool mostly because of the action. I think you re great. I think you re real, and I see nothing wrong with butting heads and bank books once in awhile. Money is a key ingredient for motivation and a reward for playing a difficult, skillful game in an excellent manner. I think many people are fooling themselves about a little something. I m talking about wagering a little something. I m talking about the people who bad mouth gamblers, yet are good players because they used to match up for something. You see, a few things happen. Every ball

really starts to matter and you start playing better under the gun or pressure. I personally lost so often that I had to improve. You learn a lot from getting your head beat in. I suppose we could just have fun and play pool. That would be the ideal philosophy, wouldn t it? But for me, banking up a game, matching up, getting in stroke, dogging it, playing another set, booking a winner, and going off is a lot more fun. And, yes, I do understand that it is not the best way to feel about something. Its just the truth, and I think it s a lot of players truth. Please, people, do not act like our government and turn your cheek to the truth. Kenny Dodd, Randy Delaney, Scottie Sinnett (yes, I heard you), and Glenn Atwell: thanks for all your tips. Peace, love, friendship, honor and humility, oh and by the way, would you like to play some? As long as we re trying to keep it real, let s talk with some pool language. Fun players are not nitty, they are witty. Gamblers are not scum, they are having some fun. We re drawn to this game because this game has greatness and, therefore, it makes players great. See, I knew we had something in common, so let s run with it. Your friend,

Paul

March 2002 Hello Washington Players

The time is nearing, so let s get ready to play ball. Pool ball that is. Who is the best non-pro pool player in the state of Washington? Who can win the money? We will all have fun winner or loser. The idea is to get out of dodge and have a ball. So get to your local W.A.M.O.A. coin operated table at you local bar or club and qualify. It s easy, just play in the tourney, be in the top three in A or B and go to Ellensburg, Washington for the state playoff. All players are welcome A.P.A., Valley, Apple and all league or non-league players are welcome to qualify. Play before your league or after your games at your house. Can that person really beat you hands down at pool? Find out. There is not a lot of time left. April is fast

coming. Friday evening there will be open play and tourney s run for fun and money. Friday night the $100 a stick tourney will be run. All are welcome as long as they sign in from a W.A.M.O.A. house. 9:30 A.M. play starts for the state non-pro singles tourney. We heard that Montana wants a piece of the Washington players. Maybe we could arrange a playoff in Spokane for the event. Are they really tough enough for Washington players? What do you think? Thank you, Bob Carroll W.A.M.O.A. See ad page 25 for locations and operators P.S. Call Cheese if you want to play Washington/ Montana. Thanks

Horsfall and Biggs Win at Q Street by: Brad Gowin

Another great tournament by Q Street Billiards in Springfield OR. That makes three tournaments since August and rumor has it a big one is in the works. I can t say enough about the people (Dennis & Sharon Blackwell and Jeff & Kim Mishler) behind Q street. They have done more to promote pool excellence in the last six months than most places do in a lifetime. They even provided the players with a calcutta! John Horsfall After doing extensive research into the laws, their lawyer finally concluded the calcutta to be within the law. As long as the house makes no profit and doesn t get involved, no laws are broken. Q Street Billiards, my hat goes off to you! Not only did Tournament Director, Ross Gay run a smooth tournament, he ran two tournaments at the same time, men s and women s. Both tournaments were filled, 64 in the men s and 32 in the women s, including players from Washington, Oregon and California. On the men s A side Rich Geiler Rich Geiler fought his way to win the point by ousting Rene Lobel, Steve Farrel, Steve Lingelbach, Eddie Carrido, Robert Colby (9-6), and John Horsfall (9-4) to win the point. Horsfall made his way through the other side of the A bracket by defeating George Reilly, Gary Crane, Ray Quackenbush, Billy Palmer, and Bryce Avila. Losing to Geiler, John went to the losers side. Defeating Bryce for another shot at the title, Horsfall went on to beat Geiler twice and win the tournament.

Carissa had wins over Kendra Marcoulier, Mary Olsen, Linda Carter, Cristy Barsky, and Julie Burney to capture the point. Julie got there by defeating Sherry Shafer, Cathy Young, Jeanne Crowell, and Jackie Fitchner. Losing to Carissa, she had to play Martha Hartsell for a chance to play in the finals. Martha s road was different. She defeated Katrina Dennis and lost her second match to Jackie Fitchner. Martha then went on the losers side defeating Varla Parks, Mary Hopkin, Diane Krouse, Linda Carter, Jackie Fitchner, Cristy Barsky, and Julie Burney to earn a spot in the finals. A Wee Game o Pool

On a fine brisk evenin near sundown I wandered over cue in hand to me pub. There the folk were all runnin round Gigglin and laughin quite a hubbub.

I looked and I peeked tryin to see What could possibly create such a stir. There was naught I found in the melee But a small bouncin bit o blur. As we all gathered near to the scene Wantin to stand close off center-ring, We spied right there on our own pool green A wee leprechaun wildly dancin the fling! Now, of course, we d had a bit o the suds And our eyes perhaps weren t reliable But he was wearin a wee darlin set o duds And was holdin a cue testifiable! First, he would hold that cue and hop over. Then he d wriggle about and bend in the limbo. He did very near all but roll over Til he was frazzled and his clothes all akimbo. We worried the poor laddie was tipsy And might totter off o the table. With all that whirlin like a crazy gypsy He surely could not be very stable!

So all our best we did gather together One to be bridge, one to smooth stroke. But he and his game were birds of a feather. Quickly went all our hopes up his pipe smoke. The moral of this long sad pool lament Is certifiably true and concrete. If too far down the beer path you went Don t play leprechauns that spry on their feet! Happy St. Paddy s! Mary Price, Helena, MT believer in the wee folk.

Of course a challenge like that was too much. Our game honor demanded we defend. We eyed one another for this clutch. This time on luck we could not depend!

As a Tournament Director, I want to let all the players of this past weekend know that I totally enjoyed having them at McCorry s. They were all Ladies and Gentlemen, they were all fun to be with and they all played excellent pool. Thanks to all of you!!

He finally wobbled and came down to a stop. Grinnin broadly, he reached for the chalk. Twirled twice round that cue, then he flopped. Asked of us, Anyone shoot or are ye all talk?

$1700 Added Pub 181 9-Ball Main Event by: Andrew Monstis

Rick Hodge wins the 9-Ball Main Event held at the Pub 181 in Gresham, Oregon. The tourney was a big success. Only 32 spots were granted, based on results from a 16-week qualifier. The 32 top point earners got first choice to enter the tournament. Top

point earner for the 16 week session with 115 pts was Mike Patterson who received a $100 bonus for his efforts. Over 121 players competed over the 16 week period for the Main Event spots. A $1700 plus add on top of the $10 entry fee provided incentive. The Main Event paid 100% of the 32 player field. It was a surprise last place receiving more then their entry fee. The double-elimination race to 5 tournament was held Feb 16th and 17th. Co- tournament directors Andrew Monstis and Don Morse developed the scheme at Pub 181 last year where the tournament added $900. Many of the entrants got their first chance to play in a big tournament against solid competition. The competition wasn t enough for Rick as he fired his way through undefeated. His break was on. He beat the likes of Rich Moore, Quenton Bonner, Andrew Monstis, Mike Patterson, and Pon Kanlaya. The competition was so good that there were a few matches where opponents didn t shoot at a pocketable ball. And there was a few upsets. Two kinds of upsets, the ones where less talented players won and those where people played sub par. And a first Justin Lilje unexpectedly blows up! ,with gracious comments over the tournament and the efforts to put it on. A big thanks to him for the welcome comments. The Pub 181 is the greatest pool bar. Every week the Pub181 puts in over $500.00 in the pool economy for activities like adds to leagues and tournaments and local advertising. That s about $25,000 a year towards pool related activities. Open tables during pool events and .25 cent tables all other times. They also have great cheap food. That is commendable and puts them on the very top of the list for most desirable place to play anywhere. Pub! Fat Boy s Tournament by: Kathi Giles

January 26, 2002 This was the first ever Fat Boy s Tournament, so we were really surprised at the great quality of players that showed up to participate. Good shooters from as far away as Nespelem, Brewster, and Okanogan, including Matthew & Linda Dick, Sal Saenz, Bob Kelly, Joe Campbell, Dave Williams and Gene & Sheila Baker came to join us. There were even two, Darryl McKay and Dave Vallee, who drove all the way down from Kamloops, B.C. to round out us locals to an incredibly tough field of 20. We were just amazed and very happy with the turnout and want to thank everyone for coming and making it an enjoyable tournament. (p.s. There s rumors of another one coming the end of March. ) 1st Ernie Wisdom $150.00 2nd Ike Williams $112.50 3rd Dennis Frazier $ 75.00 4th Sam Wakwak $ 37.50 Top Lady Linda Dick $ 25.00

The Order of Learning

with

Brad Gowin, Portland, OR

In every athletic event there is an order of learning. The order of learning reflects each individuals level of achievement. There is always an exception to the rule, although better players usually follow similar guidelines. These guidelines can be categorized into four groups: 1... The beginning level 2... The intermediate level 3... The advanced level 4... The mental game In the beginning a new player picks up his or her cue and tries to pocket balls. At this point the new player is learning to develop coordination and a feel for aiming at balls to make shots. He (or she) is making an effort to develop a form or body position to give them a straight swing. At this time much effort is given to the grip, stance, and bridge. This player would be shooting his or her shots with a center ball line of aim. and would be considered to be at the first phase of learning, or the beginning level. The beginning player is only concerned with pocketing balls and advances to the next level reasonably quick. The next phase for the beginner is learning to play position on their next shot, make continuous runs and win games. At this level the player is learning about follow (high english), draw (low english) and is starting to experiment with side spin (left and right english). Like the first level, the player strives to improve and fine tune his or her form and swing as their level of understanding grows. The second phase of learning the game is to be considered the intermediate level. The intermediate player is beginning to learn one, two, and three rail position. At this level they are learning about the correct speed of hit to play position. The players will spend a varied amount of time at this level depending on their ability to digest knowledge, discipline, and fine tune their swing skills. Now that the player has learned to pocket balls and play position with a certain amount of respectability, he or she is, or already has started moving in the direction of phase 3. At this point the player has begun to make difficult and easy shots. The player has learned to play a fair game of position, although not winning as many games as they would like. Phase 3 is when the player starts recognizing when and when

not to break out clusters to make even more continuous runs. The player has started recognizing when and when not to play safe. Learning the little ins and outs of the game takes time and experience. Still the player continues to fine tune and develop his swing in order to further his advancement towards a higher level. This is the advanced level. The final phase is the mental game. This part of the game is developed continuously through all phases of learning. I believe some of it is genetic, although the tenacious student will prevail with discipline, practice and experience. The mental game is displayed through shot selection, choices made, and the players ability to react calmly under stress. Like anything else these things can be learned. If you were to ask any good player, they would tell you they have made many mistakes over the years. From those mistakes they have learned to make correct decisions. By now the player has reached a reasonably high level of play. He has learned all the ins and outs of the game, yet seeks higher levels. He knows what to do in most all situations and makes correct decisions the majority of the time. This is where the choice is made. Do I want to continue? Am I willing to sacrifice my game for a period of time in order to improve it later? Or, am I satisfied where I m at? At this point the player is playing at a very respectable level. But, is the player playing to a level equivalent to their IQ level? This is a difficult choice to make. For most people, this level of achievement is satisfactory. They may or may not have the time to continue. This level of play may be good enough for them. To make the sacrifice and play to their full potential requires a major sacrifice of time and options within their life. This is true of all sports, or anything you truly want to be great at. Finally, we have the professional player. The professionals understand they are still at the advanced level and realize the only way to improve from here is through improvement of the swing and form. He or she has learned all, or enough, ins and outs of the game. They have reached the end of the advanced level of knowledge, proven themselves and are self disciplined. The pro level players are the true students and must continue the quest to perfect their game. The only thing left to improve is their swing. They know winners don t quit and quitters don t win . Perfection of the form and swing is the beginning and the end. You must train to fully understand this..... OTB

Super Bowl Super Pool from: Russ Pettis, Tournament Director

On February 2, Hard Times Sacramento held their first weekend of the month One Pocket Torunament. It seemed the great weather and Super Bowl weekend held the numbers down. Only 18 players showed up to test their one hole skills. In the end, it was Chris Macdonald over Robert Aldana in a great finals. The end results were as follows: 1st $250 Chris Macdonald 2nd $140 Robert Aldana 3rd $ 90 Melvin Mackey 4th $ 60 Ed Ames OTB

On Sunday, Feb. 10th the Longhorn S a l o o n , Arlington, WA hosted the 5th Annual Finger Pool W o r l d Sherm Card Championship. Sherm Card, this year s World Champ, was the first member to get their name on the trophy for the second time. Out of the 16 entries, half of which were female entries, not a lost turn for NOT having your beverage in your non shooting hand, Ballast as its called at the Longhorn. Having your beverage or Ballast in your hand is one of the tournament rules. The crowd enjoyed potluck, grilled oysters, and music by Woodstock. Come by or call the Longhorn Saloon, 360-653-4760, for our mini-qualifier tournaments, which will be held through out the year, or for a quick practice game of finger pool. T.J. & Amber Make It Two

Who s your Daddy?

by: Clay Skidmore

On February 9th McQ s Billiards held our annual Valentines Day Tournament. I have been doing this tournament for 4 years now and playing with a small field makes things nice for the players. With only 16 teams everyone gets to play right off the bat. It also makes it nice for me because I don t have to answer that famous question, When am l up next? Over and over and over. T.J. Frank & Amber Johnson successfully defended their title as they easily rolled through the field. Playing extremely strong and making few mistakes. The couple collected the first place prize for the second year in a row. Do I smell a dynasty in the making? The second place team of Jim Kellogg & Phyliss Fernandez made a great comeback after losing their first match. They rolled through the losers side to earn a spot in the finals. But only to find T.J. & Amber waiting. Taking an early lead it looked like it may go two sets. But T.J. & Amber stormed right back to close the door. Good job you guys. As always I want to thank you all for playing and keep your eye on upcoming events. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th

February 3, 2002 was the day, Hard Times Sacramento was the place. Super Bowl in the front, Super Pool in the back. This is the only way I can describe what I was witness to in the tournament room at Hard Times. Tinsley Johnson came from the losers side hoping to avenge an earlier loss to elder statesman, George Michaels. Tinsley is cruising, if you have never seen Tinsley play its fun. When he is in stroke this guy just flys around the table. Well, here it is Tinsley leading four to two, race to six. Tinsley is running out to take a commanding five to two lead. Woops, he rattles the five ball. Well like they say in tennis, game, set, match. George plays perfect from there on out to go undefeated. Good job George! Phat Tuesday s Winter 9-Ball from: Kevin Horner

Saturday February 9, Wenatchee, Washington Blood was in the water and Phat Tuesday s was infested with sharks as some of the best pool players in Washington and some from Idaho emerged from the depths to take a bite at the cash and 1st place trophy in the First Annual Wenatchee Winter 9-Ball Open. There was $500 added and the format was race to 7 winners, 5 losers. Dave Williams swam thru most of the field with wins over Robin McGowan, Tony Penazoli, Dave Tice and Chip Ginther before losing the hot seat Jack Heggie, Dave Williams match to Jack Heggie. Then another win over Dave Tice to meet up with Heggie again in the final. Jack Heggie coursed through the water and devoured Jim Nickerson, Geno Keyna, Robert Gonzales, Chad Alexander and Dave Williams to advance to the hot seat. Then he had another win over Dave Williams in the final to win the tournament undefeated. Very good shooting Jack!! My hat also must tip for Travis Valentine. I personally saw him make seven kick shots in the tournament (3 against me and most of them tough!). A couple other players said they saw him make 4 or 5 more. His kicks were definitely wired that day. After the tournament I asked him if he had some secret formula that I wasn t aware of for making kicks. His reply, I just hit em in . It reminded me of a time years ago when I asked a wise old pool player that I knew how to be a great player like him. His answer to me was, Just remember that if you hit every shot just right, they ll all go! Yeah, right. Whatever!! Thanks to everyone who helped me keep things organized and thanks to Scott and Rose Vickery for having the tournament and for adding $500. Final results were: 1st $570 Jack Heggie, Omak 2nd $380 Dave Williams, Brewster 3rd $225 Dave Tice, Lake Wenatchee 4th $160 Chip Ginther, North Bend 5/6 $115 Travis Valentine, Walla, Walla Chad Alexander, Tri Cities 7/8 $ 90 Geno Reyna, Moses Lake, Ben Flores, Coulee Dam Top Woman: $75 Sheila Baker Prize drawing: Sheila Baker won a Williams Universal Scuffer & Travis Valentine won a 2 piece stick holder. In My Opinion . . .By: T.R. Olson We took off for South Padre Island, Texas to attend their 4 th annual Amateur 8-Ball Showdown on Thursday January 31st with hope and dollar signs in our eyes. This tournaments claim to fame is the largest single payout in amateur pool, but there are a few things they neglected to tell us. We arrived there after a day of weather-delayed flights just in time to get signed up and play. We should have taken these problems as signs of things to come. We walk into a very nice facility called the South Padre Island Convention Center. It is a very spacious, clean, and well-lighted atmosphere, but this is where the kudos stop. US Classic Billiards designed the tables and they were acting in the capacity of tournament organizers and coordinators. I never really bothered to get the owners name though it was mentioned hundreds of times by disgruntled players. I didn t figure I would ever have any business dealings with this guy after this experience anyway. Their table design is a very sad attempt at converting 4 x 8 drop pocket; claw foot tables into fully automatic ball return tables. They had bill acceptors to accept dollar bills, which in it s own right proved to be nuisance as table technicians scurried about fixing a multitude of problems in ball drops and bill acceptors and I haven t even started yet. The designers were apparently lacking in technology to separate the cue ball in the case of scratches and their answer to this was to employ what many good players call the grapefruit. People new to the game probably don t even remember the days of the oversized cue ball, but to make

a long story short it can bring the strongest of men to tears. It is a quarter again the size of all the object balls making shooting balls frozen to the rail almost impossible at certain angles and combined with cloth that was too new made playing position an all up hill battle. The last issue concerning the tables was that there was not enough room for the balls to hit the runners causing ball after ball to jump right back up on the playing surface after medium speed shots that hit dead center pocket. The workmanship and finish on the tables were also very sub par with a very funny feel to them all the way around, including the fact that they installed some phony table leveler legs right on the bottom of the claw foot legs making the playing surface higher than standard by quite a bit. Although the tables caused some serious discontent among the players, the true gripe of the weekend seemed to be the amount of money the coordinators took out of prize money and calcutta. They openly and honestly told everyone they were taking 10% off the top of the nearly $20,000 calcutta, which in itself is a crying shame for all those who invested their money. No one deserves nearly two thousand dollars for auctioning off the players. Players set up calcuttas for the purpose of increasing the prize money and all players could run one without the help or even the knowledge of the tournament directors. These are side pots designed by and for the players and railbirds, not an easy way for someone to skim the till. The entry was $275 per player and there were exactly 200 players in the open division. That

works out to $55,000 and the total payout to players seemed to tally at $47,000, leaving another $8000 unaccounted for. There was not only no money added to this event, but rather money taken out of it which has been a taboo in the hundreds and hundreds of tournaments that I have participated in and help run. There were 32 tables at a dollar a throw running constant with action and mini tournaments which should have produced a substantial revenue all on it s own considering not one penny was put into this event. I talked to at least 50 to 60 other players and we figured the haul for these rip-off artists to be $10,000 to $15,000 in all. This figure is obviously an estimate, but no matter the figure it is not the players duty to pad the pockets of a few people that obviously have less interest in promoting the game than making money and selling pool tables. This is hardly the way to build a good event in the future and I feel I am speaking for many when I say never again. I am sure that due to the desperate nature of the consummate pool player that a certain amount will go back for many personal reasons from the chance at the big prize to trying to prove that they could be champ, but many of us who love the game and the competition will remained sickened by this show of greed. This kind of thing is precisely the thing that keeps pool and billiards in a constant shadow of illegitimacy in the eyes of the general public. No one will ever support liars and cheats except for liars and cheats and fortunately there are not enough of them in the world to go around or (In My Opinion continued on page 23)

A Force Draw Shot In 1969 I observed an old timer make this type of a shot in an eight ball game. He was playing a kid in his early twenties for five dollars a game in a bar in Lompoc, California. After the old timer used the principle of this shot to win the game, the kid realized he couldn t win and stopped playing him. For this trick shot we will say that ball A is a stripped ball and that ball X is the eight ball. You are shooting to make the eight and win the game. Place balls as shown in the diagram. Make sure ball A is froze to the rail and ball X is froze to ball A. Aim the cue ball to hit ball X, (the eight ball) full with a hard draw stroke. Ball A will bank out of the way and ball X will follow the dotted line into the corner pocket. You just won the game. Not only is this a clearance shot, it also shows the principle that draw produces follow on ball X. Take some time to practice this shot and then amaze your friends with this one.

Women s 8-ball

The woman s 8-ball tournament proved to keep the onlookers on the edge of their seat as newcomer Candy Zelany pummels her way to fight Janis Ogawa for the hill. Seasoned player Janis Ogawa showed Candy that some things take time as she took the hill and waited for her next victim. On the other side Heidi Berthelot diligently made it past her opponents also showing that great play in high pressure situations comes with time. Special congratulations to Candy Zelany for taking 3rd place, this was her first tournament. I m sure we ll be seeing her again in the future. In the final matches both players, Janis Ogawa and Heidi Berthelot showed the crowd why they were both there, with Janice going home with the crown.

Men s 8-ball (continued from front page) everything Mark was willing to give. Not letting up for a moment Jerry comes all the way back to secure 3rd place 6-5. In the next match Jerry finds himself down again to Don Daily 4-2. After turning the tables 5-5 Jerry is well on his way to running out until he finds himself hooked just before the eight. Determined to fight his way out of it, Jerry kicks an amazing three rail shot only to find himself hooked on the ball again. Fouling in his attempt to jump, Don Daily took advantage of the situation and closed the deal to meet Tim again for the final showdown. Don Daily intent on wining beats Tim the first match 6-4. Apparently Tim reached over and turned up the little dial on his belt a few notches to take the championship 6-1 in the final match. Good playing to everyone. You can bet you ll see them next year.

The men s 9-ball event turned out to be quite a display of good pool playing as Mike Jensen fought his way to the top after being shut down by fellow league teammate Steve Hanks. Meanwhile in the winner s bracket the crowd was torn as favored players Tony Norella and Mark Anderson played each other for the hill. In the loser s bracket Mike Jensen continued to walk through his opponents, as he did not let up on anything. Being sure to close the game at any given chance it seemed that Mike was breaking the spirit of his opponents. All this finally led to a ferocious match between Mike and Mark Anderson to see who would challenge Tony s command of the hill. Mike s robotic like shot-making procedure vs. Mark s sheer determination to give Mike nothing, made for a match worth watching. After the smoke settled Mike ended up on top as Mark took third place. After losing the first match to Michael for first place, Tony Norella turned things up a notch as Michael came out firing in the first match. The final match proved too tense as Tony answered Mike s assault with two nine ball breaks. Mike undaunted came back with a nine ball break of his own and a safety play on the one that can only be described as an Efren Reyes safe that seemed to change the course of the match in Mike s favor. Congratulations to all the finishers, and thank you for hours of great pool! OTB

January 19-20, 2002 Kelso, Washington Mike Vidas started playing great pool in the point match with Dick Megiveron but not until he was down 7-1 in a race to eight. Dick was on his way to running out the match game when he missed the six ball. Vidas tied the match at 77, including two nine ball breaks, without giving Dick a shot. Megiveron eventually won the hill game. It was Dick s third hill set in the tournament. He won all three. On the B side Glenn Atwell avenged his earlier loss to Ivan Doty beating Doty 8-1. In the mean time Al Perez dispatched Jeffry Leonard 8-1 to set up Glenn and Al playing for 3rd/4th. Atwell took a 5-0 lead and won the set 8-3. Vidas jumped out to a 7-4 lead over Glenn, who was playing his 7th match of the day. Glenn got to 5 and tried a 2-9 combo but scratched sealing his fate and 3rd place finish. In the championship match Mike Vidas continued his hot shooting and strong safety play to jump out to a 7-0 lead over Dick. When Dick finally got a shot, after mike broke and made nothing, he ran two racks but lost 8-2 to set up the final set. The second set was a little closer. Dick won the lag and broke and ran the first game. With the score 3-1 Vidas, Mike broke and made 5 balls on the break continuing to run out. With Vidas leading 5-2 he scratched on the break. Dick took advantage by running two racks to get to 5-4. Dick returned the favor in the 10th game by scratching on the break and Vidas cruised to an 8-4 win and $1200 first place. Megiveron got $800 for second.

Quaker Oats Features Billiards Theme in National TV Campaign from: Amy Long, Director of Marketing & Business Development

January 29, 2002 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. The Quaker Oats Company is putting a positive spin on the sport of billiards through its new commercial that is playing to prime-time audiences on major TV networks. As part of its Heart Health Benefits promotion, Quaker Oats gathered data from its oatmeal consumers and determined some of that group s favorite pastimes. Billiards ranked well on that list, so the new commercial depicts a female competitor who, as she plays pool, speaks on the benefits of Quaker Oats as part of her daily routine. People who eat Quaker Oatmeal have a diverse range of interests and hobbies, and this year, billiards was one of the activities chosen to highlight their active lifestyle, said Becky Ingis, Assistant Marketing Manager for Quaker Oatmeal. To date, the spot has been featured on NBC Nightly News, ABC World News, The Today Show and Wheel of Fortune. Quaker Oats has to be commended for their excellent depiction of billiards, said Stephen Ducoff, Executive Director of the Billiard Congress of America. The spot shows billiards as an attractive, exciting activity. We applaud the folks at Quaker for their initiative in showcasing to millions of consumers that pool is everybody s game. The Billiard Congress of America is a national nonprofit organization, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, whose mission is to provide exceptional value to our Members by promoting and growing cue sports worldwide.

A friend was lost to us all with the -passing of Keith Sutton at his home on January 8 th, 2002. Keith was a lifelong resident of the Skagit Valley and seemed to know more people throughout the area than a lot of us put together. Keith had a love for fishing and pool that would be hard for many people to understand except for us hardcore addicts. In traveling down the road with Keith for over twenty years it would be easy for me to tell everybody about all the adventures of going to different pool shoots and playing in leagues in both Whatcom and Skagit county but that would not do the justice that Keith deserves. For most people knowing Keith only on the pool table you saw only a very small part of the real man. There was times that I would get as aggravated as anybody with the attitude that comes out of all of us when the pressure of competition takes over. I look back now at how certain situations took place and none of it seems important at all. I cannot think of anybody that had the sense of humor or truly would drop everything to help a friend when needed. I think those of us that knew Keith could probably get together and write a book of Keithisms because there was so many memorable little sayings that he had. Unfortunately, I can only think of a few that were not x-rated. There are so many more things that can be said about Keith but I will close with the idea that we should all look at our loved ones and realize what we sometimes take for granted. I know for myself that I will miss the man that I loved like a brother and I hope there is nothing but rivers full of salmon and tables wide open with ball in hand where he now plays.

Question of the Month

Q

from: jimrmilner@juno.com I have just finished reading your latest issue, and have a question. There are a great number of us that have played for many years recreationally, but do not understand the ranking of A player, B player, etc. can you enlighten me as to how one is ranked? I would like to enter some of the traveling tournaments, but do not know what my ranking would be and therefore not knowing if I would be eligible and/or competitive in these events. On The Break asked Clay Skidmore, Tournament Director from McQ s Billiards, to offer his opinion.

A

In response to your question about rankings, I will explain the factors that I think about. Let s say a local player wants to get in a C tournament. Does this player already have a history in leagues or tournaments? If the player in question plays A.P.A. or B.C.A. they will have a handicap. Top handicaps for A.P.A. players are 7 for 8-ball and 9 for 9-ball. If the player in question is rated a 6 or 7 in 8-ball, or a 7,8 or 9 in 9-ball, the player would be considered at least a B to a B+ player, and would not be eligible for a C tournament. If the player in question does not play league then took at how this player does in tournament play. Is this player constantly in the money, or are you winning a lot of your local tournaments? If you are then you are at least a B to a B+ player and you don t belong in a C tournament. If the player in question does not play league, and also comes from a town that doesn t have many tournaments, then you need to look to yourself for a ranking. You can ask yourself these questions. Do you win over 70% of your games? When you play are you constantly winning games in short innings. Meaning; how many turns at the table do you win your games in? Are you able to create opportunities at the table? Do you have a defensive game in 9-ball or do you play good strategy in 8-ball? If you answered yes to many of these questions then you don t belong in a C tournament. As many of you know I direct many tournaments throughout the year, and my open tournaments can be pretty tough. If a player comes to play in an open 64 person tournament and places in the top 6, chances are I will not allow this player to compete in a B tournament. A few years ago I started to direct B tournaments so that next level down could have the opportunity to get a good win with players of equal ability. I then incorporated the win rule. Once you win a B tournament you can no longer play in that level. Last year I started directing C tournaments with the same concept in mind. As a whole I have been very happy with the results and the players have too. As I have said before I don t know every player in the northwest, so any help from other tournament directors would be great. And I will always be willing to add any input to your tournaments as well. Thank You, Clay Skidmore Tournament Director, McQ s Billiards

Story & photo by Jackie Clark

The B 9 Ball Tournament at the Falls Club on Feb 16th & 17 th was yet another great success. A full field of 32 players showed at the Falls early Saturday morning, with great expectations of getting into the money, but only 8 of them took home the bacon on Sunday. The race was to 7 both winners and (l to r) Tony Etchechoury, Bob Lenz losers with alternating breaks, and $750 added to the pot by The Falls Club. At 10:00 AM Cowboy Bob started the Calcutta, the favorites accordingly were; Brent Kirschenmann from Moscow, Tony Etchechoury from Post Falls, Rob Hamilton from Spokane, Jerry Schuler from Post Falls, and Mike Kurz from Pasco. The tournament played out almost as expected with just a few twists thrown in. Rob Hamilton one of the favorites won his 1st match hands down, but his 2nd match against Larry Hovland threw him to the losers side. Larry won his next match against Danny Glenn, but then favored hometown boy Tony Etchechoury sent him to the losers side. Mike Kurz (Pasco Mike) started strong winning his first 3 matches, but then was knocked down by unexpected newcomer Bob Lenz of CDA, not one of the favorites. Bob played strong, and won his first 4 matches, his 5 th match had him up against Tony, who turned it on and sent Bob to the other side of the board with a 7-0 which put Tony sitting nice in the drivers seat. Mike Kurz On the losing side of the board, Rob Hamilton went on to win his next 4 matches, and then he matched up with Pasco Mike . Rob was ahead in the beginning but Mike made a great comeback and passed Rob, the score was 6-5 Mike was ahead and it was Mike s break, sinking the 9 on the break sent home one of the favorites. Mike won his next match against Brent Kirschenmann 7-4, another favorite sent home. Mike wasn t so fortunate in his next match against Bob Lenz, both players played a great match but newcomer Bob Lenz was the one going back to the winners side with a victory over Mike of 7-6. Waiting in the drivers seat was hometown favorite Tony Etchechoury, Bob and Tony battled back and forth staying pretty even in this match, but Tony s superb playing finally won out, final match score 75. Congratulations to Tony, winning undefeated and who has finally graduated to the A player list, at least in this bar. With 7 women entering the tournament occupying almost 25% of the field, we decided to pay top woman $100. Once again I would like to extend my personal Thanks to Johnny Carr, owner of the Falls Club for his generous contributions of added money, and to his wonderful staff that always goes out of their way to take care of the players. THANK YOU to all of the wonderful players that enter our tournaments; with out all of you there wouldn t be any tournaments. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th & 6th 7th & 8th Top woman

TAP Titleholders

Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino from: Jim Trenary

On the weekend of Feb 8th, 9th & 10th The Association for Pool (TAP) had their Titleholders event. This event is run at the end of each session. (3 per year). All the top teams from each division meet to find out who will be The Best of The Best . There is no team entry fee for Titleholders. In addition to the three (3) team tournaments, there are two singles tournaments and a scotch doubles event. Over $10,000.00 in cash was handed out Cliff Carter - 1st Place 2, 3, 4 s to the winning teams and players along with trophies. If you enjoy a weekend playing a lot of pool, then you should have been with the rest of the TAP pool players at the always-hospitable Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino. For the first time players had a chance to play on the new Diamond tables provided by Chalk Talk Promotions. They were a big success and we will bring them back for the next Titleholders. A great big thank you to Roger Weibrecht for running a great tournament. This was by far the smoothest and most problem free tournament we Deb Dahlstrom Jeff Redel have had. Roger had some 3rd Place 2, 3, 4 s 2nd Place 2, 3, 4 s

great help and would like to thank Laurie and Paul Kinney for running the singles tournament. They did a great job juggling the singles tournament around the team events. Also helping was Tammy Russell, Rod Bair, Tom Reed, Jason Redel and Darrel Miotke. Without the great support of volunteers like this our job would have been almost too much. In addition I have to thank all the teams and their players for the FANTASTIC display of sportsmanship. It made me proud to be part of this league. The Basin Primetime team from Klamath Falls proved to be the Best of the Best Seth Stacey - 1st Place 5, 6, 7 s this session. It didn t come easy, for it took the great shooting of John Gower against Bret Baker from the Big Dogs team from Medford to secure the win. How can you ask for a better finish then to have the two team Captains play the hill-hill match to claim the $2,600.00 top prize. There was a lot of tension filling the room as everyone watched John and Bret play what turned out to be a $1,000.00 match. Now that s exciting! I could go on and on about all the Mike Jones - 2nd Place 5, 6, 7 s great matches, both in the team and individual events, but I just don t have the print space to do so. I can say that there were no repeat winners in the individual or scotch doubles events. Handicap system must be working. It s not too late to get your team

playing in the TAP league for we are forming new divisons as you read this. This October we will be sending six (6) teams to Las Vegas to compete in the National TAP tournament. It could be you. Please call me at 1-877-TAPPOOL ext #1 and Lets Roll .

W.S.P.L. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

running! The pace was steady and smooth!! The 2ND round matches got started around 1:302:00PM,and the competition tightened. The teams were well matched and we hit (5) SUDDEN DEATH MATCHES, by 6:00-7:00PM. It was awesome to watch, 3 SUDDEN DEATH MATCHES going on, side by side on 3 tables.

2nd Place Kricketts West - T-Rex (l to r) Pat Parish (Co-Capt.), Greg Thomas, Rex Parish (Capt.), Curtis Chipman, Chuck Mosiman, (not pictured) Mauricio Garcia, Renee Hansen

(SUDDEN DEATH MATCHES happen when 1 team wins 3 team matches and the opposing team wins 2 team matches, plus ball count. Now it s 3-3, and goes to a 6TH and Final SUDDEN DEATH MATCH.) With THE SPOT OPTION RULE: Working like it was designed for, many of the matches ended quickly; with some teams winning 4 straight player matches. But 2 teams were turning up the HEAT!! At The Sports Page-STARS SMOOOTH STROKE was battling like a single force trying to climb a mountain (together),and in the end experience would over take inexperience!! A 3RD PLACE finisher in the 2 0 0 0 Championship, this team was ready for the HEAT!! Two team matches came down to SUDDEN DEATH, and their very 4th Place Vince s Give Us A Break experienced (l to r) Dave Eaton, Justin Lauritzen, Shane Gangidino (Co-Capt.), Darren C a p t a i n Flint, John Mann (Capt.) stepped up twice and put his opponents away, with relative ease!! Jerred Mathis, and his father, Charels had been here before, and they Were Not Going To Be Denied!! On the other end of the tourney board a relatively new team from Tacoma was going through their side like water. They were having a good day, and it showed. They had come to play!! Rex Parish and his brother Pat, had withstood the HEAT on their side, and their team was ready to meet the test. Kricketts T-REX, was headed for the Finals at Grand Central Station in Sumner. The Clash of the Titans!l One Experienced, and one not, was set!! They would meet the following evening at Grand

Central Station (6:30PM). The W.S.P.L. s Central Location for ALL activities. The stage was set, and they would play the final matches on LEO HANCOCKS newly recovered Valley Cougers. LEO s reputation in the Northwest is well known, so the equipment wouldn t be a factor!! As fate would have it, STARS SMOOTH STROKE would manage to win 3 of the 1ST 4 matches! That set the stage for the 5TH match between the 2 team Captains J e r r e d Mathis & Rex Parish!l What a Finish! If Rex c o u l d manage to take his 5.3 3rd Place Kricketts West Get Felt S/L rating to (l to r front) Marc Peterson, another Scott Johnson (Capt.), (back) Gabe Jellison, Darren Flint level, and (not pictured) Chris Beck (Co-Capt.) leave more of Jerreds balls on the table than usual? He could force a SUDDEN DEATH Match? But it just wasn t to be! Jerred managed to win the 1ST game, and left 3 balls on the table (1) over his ball count; and even though Rex managed to run the table after the break, Jerred managed to keep up his focus and kept putting balls in. He not only destroyed Rex s ball count but he managed to Win the next 2 games!! MATCH OVER. Jerred Mathis not only Won 2 SUDDEN DEATH MATCHES, but had come though in the final match, and had defeated the Captain of the other team!!!! FINAL RESULTS 1ST STARS (SMOOOTH STROKE) 2,000 2ND KRICKETTS W. (T-REX) 1,000 3RD KRICKETTS W. (GET FELT) - 600 4TH VINCES (GIVE US A BREAK) - 400 5/6 BUDS (STRONG BREAK) - 300 GRAND CENT. In My Opinion...By: T.R. Olson at least I would like to think so. Pool will have an awfully hard time moving towards the recognition it deserves as long as there are so many self serving people with their hand in the promotion of the game. It is time that the pool world police itself and strive to put a little bit of dignity back into a game that has been raped of it. The WPBA has been smart enough to realize the benefits of a common goal and they are reaping the profits of it everyday. The women have been given decent TV time as well as Jeanette Lee s latest run on ESPN and all of this is possible due to the unity of the players on their tour. It is hard time that the men s billiard world open their eyes and realize that we are missing our window of opportunity to take this game to a whole new level. I originally planned on writing about this event in a good light until I attended it and found that to be nearly impossible other than the large prize that was being offered there is not much good to say other than about the level of competition that turned out. This was an amateur s only event, but that didn t stop some of the world s finest from making some appearances. Cory Duell and Rafael Martinez were around off and on all weekend and even got together and played some sets much to the delight of all the amateurs. Of course they too refused to play on the equipment so they were playing at Babes by the Bay, as were many of the players. It seemed that most could not wait to get down there to play on regular bar boxes with regular cue balls even though there were also a dollar a game at least you felt as if you were getting your money s worth out of it. Vivian Villarael also hung out a great deal of the weekend

KARL BURKEY, POCATELLO NICK GUYMON, UTAH, DOUG EDE, UTAH LADIES 8-BALL TOURNAMENT 29 ENTRIES, $25.00 ENTRY FEE, $300.00 ADDED PLAYING WITH THE 29 PLAYERS ON SATURDAY TO GET TO THE FINAL EIGHT FOR SUNDAY. Amy Myers THEY ALSO CAME BACK WITH NO WINS, NO LOSSES. AMY MYERS, NOT UNLIKE TIM JOSEPH, COMING BACK OFF FROM HER PREVIOUS WIN IN IDAHO FALLS THE PRIOR WEEKEND CAME TO HAVE ANOTHER VICTORY. PLAYING LIKE I HAVE NEVER SEEN AMY PLAY. SHE WOULD TAKE THEM DOWN ONE AT A TIME ON HER ROAD TO THAT VICTORY. AND A FINE JOB SHE DID I MIGHT ADD!!! RESULTS WERE: 1ST AMY MYERS, IDAHO FALLS$325./$500. 2ND PAULA REEDER, UTAH $225./$350. 3RD PAT HOKANSEN, POCATELLO$125./$250. 4TH BRANDI SAMUALSON, POCATELLO$75./$140. 5/6 JACKIE TUCKER, OGDEN $50. EACH JUANITA BROWN, OGDEN 7/8 SUSAN SHINN, IDAHO FALLS$25. EACH TERESA BROWN, POCATELLO I WANT TO THANK TIM AND EVELYN FOR THE $1100.00 ADDED MONEY AND ALSO A BIG THANKS TO ALL THOSE PLAYERS WHO STILL KNOW THAT REGARDLESS OF HOW HARD WE TRY......THERE ARE STILL GOING TO BE A FEW LONG WAITS IN BETWEEN PLAY. WE REALLY APPRECIATE EVERYONES PARTICIPATION AND LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL AGAIN AT THE NEXT ONE!!!!!!! KEEP ON STROKIN!!!!!!

playing and signing autographs this was a real treat to all. Last but not least were the 200 amateur players that attended from as far away as London and nearly every state in the US. One of the real shames of this event is that all of this talent was gathered in one place and the conditions handcuffed so many great players that it dropped the level of play and slowed it down as well. I would love to mention the name of every great player that was there, but that would be almost impossible. A few names that should be mentioned are the ones that battled through horrible playing conditions and unbelievable competition to rise to the top. First place went to David Gutierrez who played awesome all weekend despite the equipment and should truly be recognized by his peers for being able to manage that level of competition in such unfavorable circumstances. Second place went to Jason Kirkwood from Michigan who entered the final 64 on the B side of the bracket and manufactured one great win after another, from hill-hill matches to shutouts he truly played with great poise and confidence all day Sunday. Ignacio Chavez captured 3rd place with some real crafty and witty play throughout the weekend and Ritchie Idrovo took 4th after surviving the storm for almost 3 days. So many great players didn t even make the money that it was scary and I would like to say they didn t make it because of the competition, but that would only be a half-truth. It is a true testament to ability and desire for each and every one of the top placing players to do so well in less than ideal conditions. The only real shame is that they didn t receive all of the money that they should have. OTB
