NWPA Kicks Off New Season FOREST GROVE, ORE – Hsin Huang started out the New Year on track by winning the first stop of the 2004 Northwest Women’s Pool Association tour Jan. 17-18 at Let’s Play Billiards in Forest Grove, Ore. John Campbell and Gary French, owners of Let’s Play, graciously added $750 to the prize fund and were there the entire weekend supporting the 35 women, from around the Northwest and Canada, that competed. The Oregonian was there on Saturday interviewing players and taking pictures for an article that appeared Jan. 19 and is available on their website. Huang, the 2003 NWPA champion and National Regional Tour Champion, was true to form, capturing the hot seat with wins over: Andrena Brown, 7-2; Linda Carter, 7-1; Josie Leroy, 7-3; her road partner, Katherine “The Czar”

Dr Cues CANCELS Two in a Row Matt Jacoby and Jeff Robertson owners of Dr Cue Billiards in Shoreline, Washington north of Seattle, cancelled another pool tournament. We were unaware at press time for the January issue, that the tournament had been cancelled. We at the MCDermott Northwest tour would like to apologize to the pool players for any misinformation on our part. We know that there were players planning on signing up and attending the tournament and to those players we would again like to apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused them. We regret that the owners of Dr Cue Billiards chose to do this. It is not the policy of the McDermott Tour to advertise a tournament for months (Cancellation continued on page 27)

With solid play Impson, of Marysville, WA, knocked down a field of veteran NWPA players, including: Martha Hartsell, 7-1; Jaclyn Fitchner, 7-4; Mary Olson, 72; before losing to Kim Gates, 4-7. After Huang beat Gates for the hot

We started this tournament 3 years ago in memory of our friend, Kerry Resch. Kerry had a deep and abiding love for this game – for the purity, the complexity and the sheer beauty of it. Those are the eyes through which he introduced me to this game. Everyone who played yesterday has been bitten by the love of it. Those of you who are here today have touched the purity and the beauty of the game. Kerry once told me the difference between a good player and a great player is that a good player loves their game; a great player loves THE game. I think you today are all great players. Thank you for participating in this event and for playing the pure and beautiful pool you play.

Montal Wins at Falls Club McDermott NorthWest Tour Stop #6 By: Nita Saddler, Tournament Director

POST FALLS, ID. On January 24th and 25th we held a 9-Ball Open as part of the McDermott Tour. Due to the uncontrollable weather we did not have a full field, but a great tournament nonetheless. With 49 men and 2 women, things ran a little faster and the matches didn’t run quite so late. Our B-side winner Mike Vidas started out great with a 9-3 win over Marvin Nash, but then lost to our local, Soud Alabdulrazaq 9-6. I think this upset Mike because he tore through the Bside defeating Tony Waters 70, Scott Chandler 7-0, Darin Walding 7-4, Dave Martin 7-2, Marlon Oliveras 7-5, Bernie Mikkelsen 7-4, Randy Camantigue 7-0, Nick Kruger 7-3 and finally Stan Tourangeau 7-2 to go on and play Edwin Montal in the winner’s final.

1st Edwin Montal

Edwin started quite the same as usual. Tony Waters unfortunately didn’t have any luck of the draw. He was Edwin’s first victim and Mike’s

second. Edwin defeated Tony Waters 9-3, P J Massicotte 9-7, David Williams 9-5, Come’ Plourde 9-7, Randy Camantigue 9-5 and Stan Tourangeau 9-2 to face Mike Vidas in the winner’s final. Mike and Edwin both started out fierce with their minds set on winning. The first set went back and forth until Mike broke away to win 9-6 in the first set. Edwin came back with his game face on and would not settle for anything less than first place. Edwin won 9-4 the final set and took yet another tournament. Excellent shooting you guys! This being the first tournament I’ve (Falls Club continued page 20)

GREAT ESCAPES –

February 2004

AVOIDING SIDE POCKET SCRATCHES

OVERWEIGHT CUE BALL REQUIRED

Now for a practical application of the overweight cue ball’s propensity to SMASH-THRU the object ball. SHOT A: This is a last ditch shot. Even though the object ball is only three inches out from the center of the side pocket, on many tables you can hit the point of the side pocket and avoid a scratch or even go on past the pocket entirely from this angle.

OVERWEIGHT CUE BALL REQUIRED

SHOT D: When running English is used the cue ball hits the cushion well away from pocket X and can be driven back up the table for position if necessary. SHOTS C and D can be made from position M without scratching on most tables so long as you avoid using draw or excessive force. Experiment to see how close to the pocket the object ball can be and still score without a scratch.

SHOT B: Moving the object ball out four inches from the edge of the pocket changes the shot angle enough to allow the cue ball to safely pass the nose of the side pocket from this angle.

Players who do not understand overweight cue ball action actually think it is safe to leave shots like these.

SHOT C: Placing the object ball so the center is even with the edge of the pocket and two ball spaces from the cushion completely removes the chance of scratching at this angle (unless you draw the ball). When left English (reverse) is used the cue ball heads toward pocket Y.

McDERMOTT CUE UNVEILS “CUE OF THE MONTH” PROGRAM By: Steve Suhm

MENOMONEE FALLS, WI. – January 5th, 2004: McDermott Cue Manufacturing Inc. has announced the “Cue of the Month” (CotM) program that will impact the way new cues are released in 2004. In the past, McDermott’s strategy was to release a line of cues, anywhere from 6 to 25 new cues, at the BCA Show. Their new strategy is to release 12 cues a year, and release them one at a time each month in conjunction with other new cues released primarily for the BCA Show. “Last year we had a successful launch of 25 new designs at the BCA Show. But we couldn’t expect our dealers to purchase all 25 of those cues in one order. The Cue of the Month program results in a stronger partnership with our dealers when introducing new product as our customers can now spread out their purchases. Additionally, we’ve given our dealers some added incentives in discounts, distribution protection, and guarantees to gain their support”, says Claude Napier, President and CEO of McDermott Cue. January’s “Cue of the Month” cue, the M4-3A “Tucson”, is available now. The “Tucson” has a suggested retail price of $300 and features light birdseye maple with 35 rings of bacote, brass, and urethane. For more information on the “Cue of the Month” program, including color pictures of each “Cue of the Month” cue, visit www.mcdermottcue.com/ CotM.htm. McDermott Cue Manufacturing Inc. of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin is the leading manufacturer of high-quality two-piece billiard cues. -- What the numbers tell us -The billiard industry is thriving and telecasts of major tournaments are having an impact on the reemergence of interest in pool. Both ESPN and ESPN2 have been airing a large amount of billiard telecasts and have been receiving favorable viewer numbers. In 2003, ESPN aired 94 events and had an average of 387,000 households tuned into a telecast. While ESPN2, aired 219 events and had an average of 223,000 households watching the coverage. 2004 is starting off to be a banner year. As of January 15, 2004, ESPN reported an average of 780,000 households tuned in to watch a billiards event. There were 2 events aired so far on ESPN. ESPN2 reports 238,000 households watching billiards with 32 events telecast. These are amazing numbers and show the strength of our industry. More and more viewers are tuning in to watch pool on TV. Just look at the efforts of promoters to get their events aired on the major sports channels as well as the cable networks. The more exposure our sport has the more interest will be generated by the airing of tournaments and more people will be participating in our sport. Whether for tournament play or enjoyment, playing pool has become a great way to spend time with family and friends. The increasing popularity of pool will only serve to legitimize our sport and lend to it’s credibility. Promoting of pool at the Olympics and other World Games will have greater acceptance and carry more weight with more exposure. Already many of the individual State Olympic programs have recognized the growing popularity of pool and have added this sport to their list of competitive games. Jeanette Lee competed in and won the Gold Medal at the 6th World Games in Akita, Japan in 2001, a stepping stone to the Olympics. Pool is gaining more and more worldwide acceptance and has been taken from the stereotypical smoke-filled poolhall out into the mainstream. Pool is no longer only enjoyed by a select group of diehard individuals. It is now enjoyed by millions of players the world over. OTB

16 POOL TABLES This month’s Artistic shot is from the Bank/Kick Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 7. This is another shot that has recently appeared on ESPN’s Trick Shot Magic. This bank shot is also the opening shot from the movie “The Hustler” where Fast Eddie hustles the bartender. To set this shot up, place object ball D one half diamond segment to the right of A pocket and frozen to the rail. Next, place the cue ball in a straight line and frozen to D ball per diagram graphic. The other two object balls are one diamond from the cushion that object ball D is frozen to. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball into D ball. The cue ball and D ball will come out from between the two other object balls, separate and D ball pockets in D pocket. The cue ball goes to the right and avoids D ball travel line. The two solo balls must not be disturbed by any means. A scratch is allowed and the cue ball and D ball may make additional contacts after initial hit. Here are a few helpful hints on how to execute this great shot. Instead of aiming straight at the D ball and just using high right English for the bank, I begin by aiming straight in line with D balls vertical axis and then pivot the butt of my cue to the left. The amount of pivot is so that the center of my cue shaft is aimed between one quarter and three eight’s in from the right side of D ball, in other words I’m cutting the D ball to the left slightly. The elevation of my cue is between 10 to 15 degrees. Remember this will be high right English. I also use an open V bridge. Be sure to get your bridge hand out of the way because both balls will quickly come back at your hand. When you master this one you will definitely impress your friends. Next months Artistic shot will be from the Stroke Discipline and have a DOD of 8.

Backhand English By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

Email Questions to: jewett@sfbilliards.com harada@sfbilliards.com mejia@sfbilliards.com

San Francisco Billiard Academy If you are just beginning to use side spin (english) or are trying to teach a beginner to use it, you have almost certainly noticed that the required aiming is different. Usually the problem is that you need to compensate for squirt (sometimes called deflection). The cue ball does not start out moving parallel to the cue stick when you use side spin, but instead moves off that line along some angle that can be as large as four degrees, and the stick needs to be turned the same number of degrees in the other direction to get the aim right. Most players learn to Bob Jewett compensate for squirt subconsciously; they just aim over some so the cue ball lands where it needs to. Often these players are completely unaware that they are compensating, and might even think their stick is parallel to the line the cue ball takes. The human mind has an amazing ability to ignore the little details and get on with the business at hand which is putting the ball in the pocket. If you’re teaching or learning, however, I think it’s better to know the details of what’s going on. I

think you can learn faster and when things do go wrong, you’ll have some idea of what it takes to fix them. In the diagram is a typical shot that a beginner might have trouble with. The goal is to make the cue ball with enough inside english (right-hand side spin) to carry the cue ball around two cushions to the other end of the table. The shot is set up so that the shooter needs to hit about half of the object ball to make it, which is a 30degree cut shot. Usually, a beginner will try to do parallel aiming, so after the cue ball moves to the left (due to the squirt from the right english), the shot will be overcut. Here is how “backhand english” is used to do the necessary compensation. First aim the shot without english, so the stick points directly through the center of the cue ball. For a half-ball shot, the stick should also be pointed at exactly the edge of the object ball. Take a few strokes along this line to make sure your aim is right without spin. To make sure your setup has the right angle, you could even shoot the shot and adjust the positions of the balls as necessary. Once you are sure of the no-english line, bring your tip out to near the cue ball without touching it — you should be able to get within a half-inch easily. Now, keeping your bridge hand in place, move your backhand (grip hand) to the left to

bring the tip over on the cue ball to the right for as much side spin as you want. Next, take a couple of strokes along the new line. It may look wrong and you may be tempted to move your bridge, but suppress that urge. Once you are satisfied that you have the spin you want, (Backhand English continued on page 23)

Bowlliards Old Dog Learns New Trick by: Don “Cheese” Akerlow I usually find myself on Sundays traveling to the Hub Bar in Belgrade for a weekly pool tournament. Steve Plant, usually runs the tournament which is a $5 entry, $2 green fee, alternating 8 and 9 Ball and straight pool. One Sunday last month, there were about ten of us who found ourselves wanting to shoot something relatively new to us, called Bowlliards. The game is played with scoring like bowling, the difference and uniqueness that I find in this game is you are not playing a game against another opponent. If you miss you shoot again (see rules below), only your total score determines a winner. You rack ten balls and break. If you scratch on the break, no penalty, but if you make any balls on the break, they are spotted. Now the game begins, you get two chances to make all ten balls. If you do it in one turn it’s a strike. If you do it in two turns it’s a spare. If you make four balls in your first turn and three balls in your second turn, you total seven and so on. You are not playing against anyone just yourself and the rest of the field at the end for total score. This would be a great game for practice instead of racking and banging balls around by yourself. It can be harder than it appears to be, to score over 200. RULES (taken from the BCA Official Rules and Records Book) Except when clearly contradicted by these additional rules, the General Rules of Pocket Billiards apply. TYPE OF GAME: Bowlliards is a game that applies the scoring concepts of bowling to pocket billiards. It is one of the few games that can be quite interesting as a solitary exercise since, like bowling, there is a perfect game score to strive for, and a player can measure his improvement quite easily over the course of time playing Bowlliards. PLAYERS: Any number. BALLS USED: Any ten object balls, plus cue ball. THE RACK: Standard triangle position (front apex ball on foot spot), using a 1-2-3-4 rack configuration. OBJECT OF THE GAME: To score a perfect score of 300 points in 10 frames (innings) in solitary play. In competition, to score a higher point total in 10 innings than opponent(s). SCORING: Each legally pocketed ball is scored as one point, regardless of ball number. The points scored as per the “Rules of Play” below are treated exactly as in the pinfall in bowling. OPENING BREAK: At the start of player’s inning (frame), he has a free break (no special balls-to-cushion or other requirements once break stroke commences, and a jumped or scratched cue ball is without penalty). Any balls pocketed on the break are spotted, and player then follows his break by beginning scoring play with object balls in position and cue ball in hand behind the head string. (The opening break takes place at the start of every inning.) RULES OF PLAY: 1. A legally pocketed ball entitles shooter to continue at the table until he fails to pocket a called ball on a shot, or until he has scored the maximum total per inning possible (10). Player may shoot any ball he chooses, but before he shoots, must designate a single ball that he will pocket and the pocket into which the ball will score; he need not indicate kisses, caroms, combinations or cushions (none of which are illegal). 2. Player has two chances to pocket the 10 possible balls of each frame. If player legally pockets ten consecutive balls on his first chance of a frame, that frame is completed and player scores the frame exactly as a strike in bowling. If player fails to pocket ten consecutive balls on his first chance, he takes his second chance immediately. If he succeeds in legally pocketing the remaining balls of the ten on his second chance, the frame is completed and player scores it exactly as a spare in bowling. If player fails to legally pocket all ten balls in two chances, the frame is then completed and is scored just as in bowling: a “strike” in the tenth inning earns two extra shots, a spare one extra shot. 3. If players tie for high game total in competition, additional extra innings are played alternately by the tied players, with the first player posting a superior score to that of his opponent(s) being the winner (“sudden death”). ILLEGALLY POCKETED BALLS: On the break, illegally pocketed balls are spotted prior to player beginning his scoring play (first chance of the frame). During scoring play, illegally pocketed balls are spotted. OBJECT BALLS JUMPED OFF THE TABLE: All spotted. The stroke is a foul, and the penalty for fouls is followed. CUE BALL AFTER JUMP OR SCRATCH: Only applies if occurring as player’s first foul of a frame, player has cue ball in hand behind the head string to begin his second chance of the frame. PENALTY FOR FOULS: One point is deducted from offender’s score for each foul. If foul ends player’s first chance of a frame, he has cue ball in hand behind the head string to begin his second chance of the frame.

Snow Bowl Open 9-Ball Singles January 24, 2004 By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

My plans had originally been to travel to Post Falls to cover the McDermott Tour Tournament at the Falls Club. On Friday the 23rd I spoke to Nita the Tournament Director there and told her of the impending storm and weather that was here in Montana. She also told me of the storm that was there. This gave me an opportunity to play at a local tournament. In 1st Joe Schwartzer getting to and leaving the Eagles in Bozeman, Montana you may have thought you should have had a snowmobile or ATV, as a huge snow storm came through the state, but 34 men and women (full field + 2) braved the elements. Dick Jones and his staff at the Eagles worked hard to make the tournament a success. All the tournaments at the Eagles have served lunch, this was no exception with Pasties and mushroom gravy, salad and potato salad, and free coffee all day. Dick, as Photo courtesy of Mike Wright 2nd Walt Nead Tournament Director, explained the rules, Texas Express, race to 7 and 5 on the losers side and the three foul rule will apply, winner breaks. It was a good day to be inside and any day is a good day to play pool. Photo courtesy of Mike Wright

It started out as a mere thirty player men’s only tournament in its first year, held solely at the Pastime Bar in Libby, Montana. This annual event has grown to become a popular tournament among many, many players from all over the Northwest. The tournament is now held at two locations, (The Mint Bar and VFW) utilizing ten tables, with a men’s and women’s division. We here at the Tom Scott have enjoyed seeing some very talented men and women players make their way here to test their skills. There is always a vast range of skill levels that attend this tournament, from the beginner to the advanced.

Yours truly, The Tournament Directors See ad below

Classic 50’s Christmas Classic From: Steve Patrick, Classic 50s Casino

GREAT FALLS, MT Sky Tigart and Dave Schwartz cleaned house at the 3rd Annual Classic 50’s “Christmas Classic” 8-Ball Doubles tournament, in Great Falls, 3 January 2004. What the Tournament did not have in quantity, it made up for in quality. There were 7 former State Champions in competition. Jerry Kohm, Jeff Boucher, Dan Hamper, Jason Tigart, John Peters. Allot of GOOD shooters. But Dave and Sky persevered, and won the winner’s bracket and waited for all others to work their way to the prize money and a shot at a very solid and lovely team (compliments of SKY). But her beauty was deceiving, as she dealt fury to her opponents as Dave Swartz did through out the tournament. Congratulations to the “Brawn and Beauty” as

From The Work Bench by: Pat Sheehan See Ad Page 13 Well, finally, some of you readers are responding to my articles. I had begun to wonder if anyone was reading them. They do take a part of my week once a month to get this column in the paper, so I do feel great when I get a call from someone who took the time to read them. I have been getting calls from as far away as Tennessee responding to the web that The Break maintains and lots Pat Sheehan of calls on the new table at the Rock Creek Road House. A lot of people have been anxious to try the table, but the weather has been rotten in the Portland metropolitan area, but those who have made it have wondered why the table plays so well, so I thought I would devote this article to my thoughts on how to make a table play well. To have a table play well some simple things must happen with the structure. If you shoot a ball in a straight line with no side spin, it should continue in a straight line until it falls into a pocket or stops on the table. If the ball is shot into a rail the ball should bounce and the rail and table should not bounce. The ball should travel in a correct series of angles if shot in an obtuse angle. Not all tables are created equal and even these simple rules are overlooked. If an engineer looks at the flat surface of this size he would see a flat plane supported by four columns. He would draw gravity as a weight suspended from the center of the plane. To overcome the gravity the support between the four columns must be very strong and a heavy grid supporting the center. The frame that we used was an “Old Mission”, manufactured by the Brunswick Balke Collender Co in the early 1900’s, and answered the above criteria to the fullest. It was built to be solid and massive yet have style and flair. The heavy frame tips the scale at over 1,000 pounds. We added a new set of oversize slate for another 600 pounds and built a new set of rails and aprons. We made the rails of 7/8 thick Poplar and 7/8 thick Quarter Sawn Oak. Heavy steel plates tapped to accept a 3/8 bolt were inserted in them so that the rail is firmly attached to the slate and table, so that when the ball hits the rail it will not give but the ball will bounce. The Tournament 2000 cloth by Gorina of Spain keeps the ball rolling. I have been using the Gorina cloth for the past month instead of Simonis and so far have been well pleased with the results. Like Murdock from the “A Team” used to say “I love it when a good plan comes together”. I used the Tournament 2000 at Touche’s. They have used Simonis 760 and 860 so I hoped to hear. Monday night we had a chance to play J D Stubenberg’s team and J D had a chance to try the cloth and had nothing but good things to say about the way it plays. J D is a “7” and great coach with a great group of players. Cheese gave me a sample of the new Quick-Clean and I demonstrated it at Touche’s. They have a real problem keeping the tables clean, so I had plenty of chalk and dirt to work with. It takes 10 minutes to brush the 4 ½ x 9 tables and it is an exercise in moving the dust from one end to the other and settling down back on the cloth when you get to the other side. That means another 10 minutes to go back over it again. No one likes to do it so it doesn’t get done very often. With the Quick-Clean, you stand at one side pocket and spray the opposite side of the table. Go then to the other side pocket and spray the other side. I used the wiper and was able to render the table spotless in 2 ½ minutes. Zareh the owner was impressed and plans to order a set. The Microfiber cleaner gets the crud from under the rail and pulls the dust and chalk and kills the shine all in one pull of the wiper. What a pleasure for the players not to come up with the Black Bridge hand and saves the distraction of looking at the heap under the rail as you are aiming at the pocket. The only problem for us mechanics is that with the grit removed daily from the cloth, we won’t be covering them as often.

Letter to the Editor:

Memorial Tournament

Mr. Akerlow, Thanks for your editorial (p.5, Dec. 2003) addressing the vanishing breed that we call family. I thought the movie Pool Hall Junkies was a great flick. And this comes from one who likes pool and movies. Wouldn’t you agree that any exposure in mass media is better for pool than no exposure? I would. It would take a lot of broken bones and curse words to turn off anyone to pool that would ever pick up a stick in the first place. The more sensitive (sensible?) among us exist in an age of hyperviolence. The more desensitized (young?) among us live in a world called Normal. It’s an unfortunate fact that American media only releases what will be profitable. I must insist that any movie that makes people want to go play pool is a positive thing. I think “Pool Hall Junkies” did just that. Compared to many, many films, the ugly side of PHJ was quite tame. Cheers, Macx Butcher, Arcata, CA Send your comments on Pool and related subjects to “The Break”, P O Box 100, Three Forks, MT 59752 or email: cheeses4u@aol.com

I met Bob Flemming in 1975 and we played pool in the very first pool league in Butte. He was a much better player than myself but we had fun and Bob loved to play pool and tried to teach me. His son Stacey learned to play pool from watching his Dad, Bob. Bob loved pool and and passed on his enthusiasm to many. Bob loved kids and that is why $100.00 will be Bob Flemming donated in his name to the Marine Corps Toys for Tot’s program. The best thing one can say about Bob is that at his funeral service last year it was literally “standing room only”. He was respected and loved by many and we will miss him. Sam Moul on the Prowl By: Clay Skidmore

Spokane, WA - On the weekend of January 17th –18th McQ’s Billiards hosted a class “B” 8-ball tournament. Due to a minor mishap by a player the field came up 1 entry short of a full field. The level of play was a very good mix of high “C” players and a wide range of “B” players. In fact if I took this field and played it all over again I am quite sure we would have a different winner each time. Sam Moul opened with a 5-2 win over Johnnie Landis and went on to defeat Mathew Dick 5-1, Larry Wayne 5-0, Scott Nelson 5-2, Clay Belvoir 5-3 and Herb Richter 5-1 to claim the drivers seat. Sammy’s opponent in the finals was Herb Richter. Herb started his run through the tournament with an opening round win against Gale Louie 5-0, he then went on to defeat Bob Pike 5-4, Randy Sterling 5-3, Rich Benson 5-1, and Mark Johns 5-1 before his loss to Sam in the winners final. After getting by Clay Belvoir in the B side final he did get Sam in the first set of the finals but Sam prevailed in the end. Thank you again to all that played. 1st $700 Sam Moul side pot $260 2 nd $500 Herb Richter $380 Clay Belvoir 3 rd th 4 $250 Mark Johns $170 Lyle Redthunder, Larry Wayne 5 th 7 th $120 Scott Nelson, Chuck Hood th 9 $80 Peter Hamel, Jim Johnston, Jack Belcourt, Rich Benson 13th $40 Larry Allenfort, Gary Jennings, Soud Alabdulrazaq, Danny Glynn

Breaking News River City Billiards Press Releases From: Leagues, Manufacturers, Suppliers, Organizations, Instructional and anything of interest in the pool and billiards community.

Billiards Retailer Recruits Support For US Troops Matthews, NC – January 12, 2004 – United States Army soldiers and their families will soon be receiving a financial helping-hand from an unlikely source. Due to the efforts of CueSight Technologies, an online billiards retailer, and the generosity of their customers, a significant donation has been made to Army Emergency Relief (AER), a nonprofit charity. AER’s sole mission is to help soldiers and their dependents overcome financial hardships resulting from their military service. On the day of Saddam Hussein’s capture, CueSight sent an email to all their past customers, stating that 10% of the gross revenues from any new orders they might place would be sent to AER. Furthermore, the email stated that the customers would be given an additional 10% off their order in appreciation of their generosity. “I was overwhelmed at the positive response,” said CueSight’s President, Scott Taylor. “Ninety-one of our customers participated, and almost as many sent letters thanking us for what we were doing. It was a heartwarming experience. Mothers of serving soldiers expressed their gratitude, and one customer was actually a previous recipient of aid from AER.” Army soldiers and their families often suffer severe personal and financial hardships during crises such as the current war in Iraq. The deployment of Army forces to the Middle East has increased the need for Army Emergency Relief assistance as family financial situations are challenged due to increased expenses from separation and other family adjustments.

“When I heard the news of [Hussein’s] capture, I felt that we had to do something to show our support. This seemed like such a perfect way to use our resources to help others. Plus, we were able to give our customers an easy way to directly contribute and participate,” Mr. Taylor stated. CueSight Technologies offers pool cues, billiard balls, and over 1,000 other billiards supplies online at discount prices. General E.C. Meyer, President of AER, says, “Established in 1942 by the Secretary of War, Army Emergency Relief is proud to have helped more than 2.8 million soldiers and their families overcome financial emergencies during these last 60 years. While active duty soldiers receive the bulk of our assistance, we continually help retired soldiers and widows/ widowers also. We also have a robust education scholarship program that provides financial support for both dependent children and spouses.” Army Emergency Relief can be reached by phone at 1-703-4280000, or online at http:// www.aerhq.org/. CueSight Technologies is located at http://www.cuesight.com/, or can be contacted by calling, toll-free, 1877-CUESIGHT (1-877-283-7444). CueSight Technologies is based near Charlotte, North Carolina, and has been in business since 1998. Named for their first product, a laser-sighted pool cue, CueSight has since grown to offer billiards supplies of all kinds, from cue chalk to training aids. With over 15,000 sales to all seven continents, CueSight is one of the largest billiards retailers in the world. January 17 & 18, 2004 Pappy’s hosted a $500.00 added 8-ball, bar box event for the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour over the Martin Luther King , Jr. holiday weekend. A huge thank you to Pappy’s, for welcoming us back again. The ladies always enjoy themselves with such great tables, food and service. 33 ladies were in attendance as the day began Saturday afternoon, including four new members and a few we hadn’t seen for quite a while. The AWBT saw some new new names and new members taking home the “W’s” this tournament. It looks as if it will be an exciting 9th season for the members. The final eight ladies were as follows: Liz Bernreuter, Diana Clayton, Tracey Elliott, Anne Gray, Katie Gray, Justine Karber, Jodie Villegas, and Meiko Yamanobe. As Liz and Diana took a 7th/8th place finish, the next matches found Tracey and Justine following in 5th/6th. Jodie and Anne battled it out and Jodie continued her quest leaving Anne in 4th place. Then Jodie was stopped by Katie, who wanted a shot at the hot-seat holder. Meiko was sitting pretty comfortable in the hot-seat, since our tournaments

Capital City Challenge from: Leo DeGuarda

On January 9-11, The Edge Casino and Eagles 16 in Helena, MT hosted the Capital City 8 Ball Challenge. Top caliber players from Montana, Alberta and Wyoming showed up to do battle in a 58-player draw. The Open division had 42 men, the Ladies drew 16. The final four ladies, Janet Dunks (Butte, MT), Teresa Kokonis (Calgary, AB), Jane Plant (Belgrade, MT) and Mary Price (Helena, MT), returned Sunday to see who would take top honors. Mary Price had a good showing after losing her first match Saturday to Jane, she worked her way to the redraw for Sunday. On Sunday she played well but was defeated by Janet and Teresa to take home fourth. Jane went through Saturday undefeated. Sunday saw her defeat Teresa 6-5 to play Janet for the hill. Janet won in another 6-5 nail biter setting up a 1st Janet Dunks rematch of Jane and Teresa. This one as w e l l came right down to the wire another 6-5 battle saw Teresa win, earning the right to knock Janet off the hill. It wasn’t to be however as Janet had been picking up steam all weekend and was shooting fantastic. It was a great final with Janet notching the 7-5 victory and the win for the tournament. The Open division set up some awesome finals matches in a field of 16. The final 4 set Edwin Montal (Calgary, AB) vs. Jeff Boucher (Helena, MT). Jeff looked like he was going to run away with the match at 2nd Teresa Kokonis 4-0, but Edwin mounted a comeback before Jeff won the match 6-4. Jeff moved on to play T R Olson (Chinook, MT) for the third place. After a back and forth battle early in the match T R won 6-4 putting him in the finals against Shannon Gibson (Great Falls, MT). Shannon had given T R his only loss of the tournament, knocking him off the hill. T h e 3rd Jane Plant finals match set T R vs. Shannon, with T R needing to defeat him twice to win the tournament. After a tough 7-5 first set, it was all even, one more set to determine the tourney winner. T R came out firing on 5-0 run, Shannon battled back to 6-4, before T R emerged victorious with a 74 win. THANKS!!! To all those who showed up with your courage and pride to play this 4th Mary Price event. Many of you traveled great

distance to be here and we appreciate that. THANKS to our sponsors, without them these events aren’t possible, please remember to support them wherever you go. Once again thanks to everyone involved. See you next tourney.

by: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

Shooters Sports Bar located in Lewiston, Idaho, is celebrating their first year anniversary in April. It was almost a year ago that Max Martin moved his successful business into a new location. Max and his son Zane operate the poolhall and bar at its new location of 1618 Main Street in downtown Lewiston, just a few blocks from the old location. While Max is concentrating on the pool aspect, Zane manages the bar and darts. The new Shooters is housed in a 7,000 square foot space with six bar boxes to play on, a full bar and a Billiard Pro Shop. The Pro Shop is one stop shopping for cues and accessories, table recovering and repair and is the new distributor for Quick-Clean in the area. When Max first decided to promote pool in Shooters he remodeled his room to accommodate the pool players. At that time there were never more than 8 teams in the local VNEA league. His first year in league they went to 14 teams, then 26 and now the league boasts over 32 teams. He sponsors BCA, VNEA and a local Valley (slop pool) league. At the beginning of the Fall Season every year the players decide on how they want to sanction the league. The options are BCA only, VNEA only or both. The bar sends at least 3 teams to Vegas each year (the most was 5 teams) and 8-12 players to the Idaho State Championships. The design of the new poolroom was done with the pool player in mind. There is a minimum amount of player interruption from one table to the next. The room is configured so that the tables sit at a 30 degree angle, partly for esthetics and partly for convenience. With this arrangement there is enough room between the tables, no “sand traps” anywhere as Max put it. You do not end up playing up against barstools, other players, spectators or poles. There is seldom any waiting to shoot, and the players are courteous and considerate. Every Friday night the Shooters holds a weekly tournament that alternates between 8 and 9-Ball. Max boasts of his computerized tournament software that will display the bracketing on his big screen TV. The program will randomize the players, call the matches, assign tables and even add in late arrivals. On April 3-4, Shooters will host their first big tournament in the new location, for this Max will bring in a couple more tables. The event is the newest McDermott Tour Stop and has a $1500 added guarantee to the tournament. There are more special events in the works, possibly even a pool workshop/ exhibition, details are still being worked out. We at “The Break” would like to congratulate Max on his efforts to promote pool. He is one of the reasons that pool is thriving, so stop in, shoot some pool and tell him thanks!

Renton WA – January 17-18, 2004 At long last, (it seems such a short time), our first anniversary has arrived and gone. Both Sean and I would like to thank those who participated and helped us put on a successful tournament. The first day started off a little late, but was soon running smoothly. There were 41 players, so lots of byes to be dealt with. By the second round we were using all tables for most of the day, and got down to the money by 6pm. The best match of Saturday was also the last. Both Stan Tourangeau and Mike Zimmerman were fighting to stay on the winners side, but Mike Zimmerman one had to go. This thrilling contest went back and forth with neither more than one game up. Of course it went to hill-hill with Mike coming out on top. Day 2, Sunday, was more of the same grind it out play. We were into the money and everyone wanted the biggest slice. The most persistent player was JD, who Stan put into the 1 loss column in the 2nd round on Saturday. JD then knocked out Zak Leach, Rory, and Cocomo that 1st day. On Sunday he resumed his march to the finals getting by James Davee, revenge on Stan, Tim Tweedell, Val, and Raul. J D Doherty In the meantime, Zimmerman walked past Larry C., Kris Iverson, and Stan on Saturday. On Sunday he also put Tim T., and Raul into the 1 loss side. In the finals, it was Mike Zimmerman over JD Doherty in 1 match to seal the deal. R E S U R R E CT I O N by: Dean Shane Cassem About the Author Dean Shane Cassem Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father from Lebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stick at age 15. His father and grandfather before him had Cassem’s restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb of Charleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. From age 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn, Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placed second in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966). In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the bars and

out of the rooms where stiffer competition would have honed his game. His stroke subsided completely until his mid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coors statewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981. Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80’s, his game went dormant again until he sold his business and

returned to school. At age 48, he completed his undergraduate work in theology, and earned Master’s degrees in Marriage & Family Counseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skills and has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shane has five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough,

Resurrection, Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstores by November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; Skinny Malone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counseling practice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for his ongoing Carter Keating Series. Shane has one daughter, Vickie Linn, a son-n-law, Brian, and a precious granddaughter, Shelbie Linn. You may visit Shane’s web sites at; www.carterkeatingnovels.com or creativecounselingconcepts.com

Finale In Part One, Carter Keating, college graduate and former Special Operative returns home from a tour of duty in the Colombian jungles. Gracie, his significant other, has dumped him for someone else. He enrolls in the local police academy and meets new friend, Joe Lauterette. Later, Elizabeth, a new companion, seeing his love for the game, inspires him to enter the Texas Eight Ball Championships. The story continues as he ponders the decision. Part Two finds Keating and Lauterette at a local restaurant, talking about his former passion for the game, and the role that Jimmy the Stick Gadwell and old Charley Sturgis had in teaching him to be a young prodigy at only eighteen. Part Two ends as Keating decides to fish his cues out of mothballs and prepare for the tournament. Part Three has Keating working on his game in Sharky’s, a popular Houston hangout. In the interim, Danny the Brat approaches Keating for a game. A verbal confrontation ensues and the Brat storms off pouting. Later Linda Jo Minard, a local singer and pretty good player, approaches Keating while he practices. Part Four continues as Keating befriends Linda Jo. As he leaves Sharky’s another confrontation almost develops between Keating and the Brat’s cohorts. Later, Keating, Lauterette, Linda Jo, and Elizabeth anxiously await the pairings for the Texas Prelims. The story continues as Keating and his first opponent, an Asian pair off in an eight ball race to five. In Part Five, Keating beats the Asian handily and wins a testy second match. Given a schedule break, Keating skates out for a burger. The Brat’s cronies confront him in the parking lot and Keating deals with the two bullies. In Part Six, someone steals his Corvette from the Galleria parking lot. Short on time, he runs back to Sharky’s in a cold rain and is run down by a biker and injures his leg. A kind old man takes him to Sharky’s just in time to make his match, which he somehow wins. In Part Seven, Keating and the Brat face off in the prelim finals. After a bitter, intense match, Keating advances to the state playoffs. Part Eight features Keating in the state finals held at the Galleria complex. A tough competitive match develops between Keating and Tony Ever Ready Reyes. Down in the match to Reyes, Keating takes a break, is confronted by the ghost of old Charley Sturgis, a former teacher, and then returns to the match. In Part Nine, Keating struggles for control of the match. His persistence pays off when finally Reyes fouls and leaves Keating with ball in hand. Reyes is not to be denied. Part Ten builds toward the finale as Reyes hypes the match and Keating meets the challenge. EVER READY NARROWED HIS EYES AND GLARED AT ME. HE COMPLAINED some more to the referee, then like an angry bull stomped back to the head string. He let fly with another shattering break. Five balls flew into the pockets. The break had been almost perfect. Ever Ready had hit the rack so murderously that one of the object balls had flown off the table onto the floor. “Foul,” the ref called out. Ever Ready glared at me hatefully and sat down. The crowd applauded. Ever Ready stood up, waved then sat down. Methodically, I studied the table, made the first shot and then calmly ran out and made the eight. The crowd applauded appreciably. “Warmin’ up to you, Keating,” Joe growled. Nod. Seven five. Ever Ready moved restlessly in his chair then sneezed loudly. Undisturbed, I strolled over to the foot string and eyed the rack. After chalking my cue, I positioned for the break, stroked and followed through. Only one ball fell in. However, the table spread beautifully. I ran out. Seven six. Ever Ready tried to distract me. It didn’t work. What Charley Sturgis had

taught me years before had burned itself into my memory. Focused, I broke and ran out. Then again. And again. After the fourth rack, the crowd swung completely my way. The applause after the fourth rack was sustained. “Geez, no wonder they called you the surgeon,” Joe said. Nine seven. I had the lead. In the next game the cue ball locked up between the eleven and the rail. I tried a slop shot and came up empty. Ever Ready to his credit, took his time and went out. I racked the balls. The crowd quieted. All four floors now had people stacked around the railings. Ever Ready broke the rack. At the last nanosecond, the cue ball drifted into the side pocket. Scratch. My shot. I broke the rack, made three balls and ran the rack. Ten eight. I was on the hill. I thought about Charley Sturgis. “Total focus, Carter, especially when you can nail the lid on the coffin.” Eyeing the break I felt a strong temptation to unwind a monumental break and end with a flare. Resisting the urge, I smooth stroked the cue ball (Resurrection continued on page 29)

BCA Canadian Nationals “Back for More” and “The Rock” Repeat in Toronto By John Lewis Familiar names dominated the top divisions at the 9th Annual BCA Canadian 8-Ball Championships, conducted January 7-10, 2004, at the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel in Toronto, ON. Bonnie Plowman (Calgary, AB) added a fourth national singles title to her prize chest (’99, ’00 and ’02) by out pointing Cathy LaFreniere (Fergus, ON) in the finals of the Women’s “A” division. Bonnie’s team, “Back for More”, aptly named and featuring teammates Bev Ashton, Joanne Ashton, Collyne Savage, Amanda Lofvendahl and Stephanie Radmore defended their 2003 Women’s “A” division title by turning back Toronto’s “Break-N-Run”. The Men’s “A” team title was also

successfully defended by Toronto’s “The Rock”, featuring teammates Vince McIntyre, Al Porter, Chris Woods, Al Logan, Dale Sweet and Joe Lawrence; although the team had to crossover from the “B” side and eclipse Toronto’s “The Road Warriors” in two matches to reclaim their crown. In Scotch Doubles, Vince McIntyre (from “The Rock”) and Marcie Dunbar (from “Break-N-Run”) proved to be a potent combination in outgunning the field for the title and taking out Toronto’s Lynn Martin and Rob Brandenburg in the finals. With the A-B-C category format filtering singles and teams down to other divisions after Day 1 of each competition, Toronto’s Rob Brandenburg outlasted Sean

Fleming (St. John’s, NF) for the Men’s “B” singles crown; two Ontarians - Bev Littler and Tammy Hoy - vied for the Women’s “B” singles title, with Hoy the victor; and Ontario again dominated the Men’s “C” singles competition with Chris Duke defeating Ken Botham. Cambridge, Ontario’s “Sharp Shooters” (Jason Holdaway, Rick Hutchings, Scott Yankee, Neil Mills and Phil Fraser) claimed the Men’s “B” team victory; “Wild Eights” (also from Cambridge, ON) featuring Carrie Dwyer, Darlene Gardiner, Catherine Fliestra, Catherine Frei and Joanna Palmer-Smith emerged triumphant over the Women’s “B” team competition; and Windsor, Ontario’s “Shakin & Stirred” (Andre

Bilek, Roger Bellina, Derek Mereszak, Harvey Shognosh, Don Charette, Turk Unlu and Andy Brownlie) bested the Men’s “C” team field. The Billiard Congress of America appreciates the production efforts of Canadian Cue Sport Productions and High Country Promotions, provider of the sixty Valley Cougar tables; and the sponsorship of Falcon Cues, Smart Start Billiard School, Budweiser and the Doubletree International Plaza Hotel. Players and teams ventured to Toronto from New Foundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Nunavit, Prince Edward Island, Alberta and British Columbia. (BCA continued on page 27)

Backhand English

Wednesday Dinner Special

(continued from page 8)

bring the stick straight back and straight through the cue ball along that new line with enough speed to carry the cue ball to the other end of the table. Did you make the ball? If not, which side did you miss on? If you hit the ball too full, the backhand method gives too much compensation for your bridge and cue stick. If you still want to try it, you will need to use a longer bridge. If you over-cut the ball (hit it too thin), the compensation wasn’t enough and you will need to use a shorter bridge. The length of the bridge is a factor because it determines the angle of correction for a given amount of side spin. For most house cues, this method of compensation works fairly well, because they have quite a lot of squirt. Low-squirt shafts, such as Predator and the new Meucci shafts, don’t need nearly as much compensation, so this technique will work only if you have a very long bridge. Backhand english is also referred to as the “aim-and-pivot” method. There is another technique that some players use, and that is to adjust from center ball to side spin on the final stroke; they come back straight from the center of the ball and then on the final forward stroke, they swerve their arm in or out to get the side spin. I think this last method, which I call “aim and swerve,” is a recipe for disaster, but with enough practice, some people can make it work. Backhand english doesn’t work for all people or all sticks, and it certainly doesn’t work for all shots even if it does work some of the time, but it is a useful way to introduce side spin squirt compensation to beginners. The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) announces that its annual fundraiser, Challenge the Stars, will be held on May 18, 2004, in the Grande Ballroom of the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Immediately following the Parade of Champions at the 2004 BCA National 8-Ball Championships, over 9,000 billiard fans and numerous pros will have the opportunity to come together for a night of 9-Ball challenges, trick shot demonstrations and fundraising. BEF Board of Trustees President Tom Riccobene said, “The BCA National 8-Ball Championships is a great venue for Challenge the Stars; we have thousands of billiard players and fans, as well as the top-64 men and top64 women professional players in the world, all at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. We expect to have a great night and raise a significant amount of money for our Academic Scholarship Program and other junior billiard projects.” BCA President Skip Nemecek noted, “a whole new group of people will now be able to enjoy and participate in Challenge the Stars. For a small donation, a person can play against the very best in the world. It’s a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to get to know some of your favorite players.” In previous years, Challenge the Stars was held as the kick-off celebration of the BCA International Trade Expo. MERCHANTS TO MARKET WPBA PRODUCTS Internet Retailers, Distributor To Include New WPBA Products in 2004 Offerings The Women’s Professional Billiard Association announced the addition of two retailers and a wholesale distributor to the growing list of billiard industry concerns that will begin marketing the new line of WPBA products. AZ Billiards and CueSight Inc. will include WPBA products on their internet retail sites, while Cuestix International will make the WPBA products available to their extensive network of national and international retail dealers as those new products become available. The announcement comes as the WPBA implements an aggressive marketing campaign, expanding its retail product line, as well as increasing its distribution avenues for those products. AZ Billiards is widely recognized as one of the top Internet sites for billiards related news and information. The popular site debuted on-line in 1998 and has developed and provided website hosting for four of the women’s regional tours. In addition to maintaining the AZ Billiards website, Mike Howerton, owner of the site, also maintains the website for one of the most internationally recognized female athletes and WPBA player, Jeanette Lee. “It’s an exciting time for the WPBA right now,” says Howerton, “They are doing a lot of great things and it appears that the product line will just keep getting better.” “We are proud to be affiliated with the WPBA and look forward to a long profitable partnership,” he adds. CueSight Inc., a subsidiary of Sterling Gaming, is also recognized as one of the billiard industry’s top Internet sites. In addition to a strong Internet retail presence, CueSight’s wholesale operation distributes to over twenty affiliated retail websites. According to Steve Taylor, CEO and President of Sterling Gaming, his company’s association with the WPBA is an opportunity to advance the sport of billiards. “We sponsor three of the top five male professional billiard players and have wanted the opportunity to show our support for the women professionals,” says Taylor. “This is just the beginning of what we anticipate to be a long-standing relationship with the WPBA,” he adds. Cuestix International offers an established history in the billiards industry, boasting record growth in each of the thirteen years since its inception. The international reach of Cuestix should prove lucrative in the sales of the new WPBA line through the company’s vast listing of dealers which includes retail billiard stores, as well as billiard halls. The “woman-owned” Cuestix shares a certain “gender-affinity” with the WPBA, while also employing one of the WPBA’s veteran and top-ranked players, Laura Smith. “Cuestix International wants to support the WPBA in any way that we can, including carrying WPBA products in our catalog and product offering,” says Eric Weber, the company’s marketing director. For more information regarding these companies please visit their websites at: www.AzBilliards.com, www.cuesight.com, and www.cuestixint.com. The WPBA is the oldest professional player’s organization for billiards. The WPBA governs all aspects of female professional activity; represents the media and participation rights of professional and semi-pro players; governs rules, regulations, and conduct, ethics and equipment specifications for professional sanctioned tournaments; and, develops, produces and sanctions tournaments. in advance and then cancel without notice. The news of the cancellation was a surprise to us and when our offices contacted Dr Cues about the cancellation, we were told, “It was an oversight that you were not contacted. We had a lot of things going on.” Their first tournament cancellation was due to the remodeling of their kitchen and rescheduled for the January 10-11 date. Since we have had dozens of phone calls and emails about the

cancellation, we feel that it was irresponsible of Dr Cues, not to give the pool players proper notice. Many players expressed to us that they had planned on signing up for the tournament after the holidays, only to find out that it had already been cancelled. There are no further plans to have a McDermott Tour stop at Dr Cues, to avoid this happening in the future. Turn to page 34 for the newly updated McDermott Tour stop locations.

Mika Immonen

BELL GARDENS, CA The UPA Pro Tour Championships held at the Bicycle Casino January 6-11, 2004 has crowned Mika Immonen the champion. With over 500 spectators watching the final four rounds of play, Efren Reyes met Charlie Williams to determine fourth place. Charlie defeated Efren by a score of 11-4. The match for the hot seat was between Ralf Souquet and Mika Immonen. Ralf took the match hill-hill but Mika came out on top. Now the playoff for third place pitted Ralf Souquet and Charlie Williams. Charlie jumped out to a quick lead and found himself with a 7-1 lead. Ralf got a break on the next rack when Charlie failed to pocket any balls on his break. His momentum continued until the score was 8-6. But fate was not on Ralf’s side as he missed the 1 ball on the next rack and Charlie finished the match from there 11-6. The finals were off to an unusual beginning when Mika scratched on the break, Charlie missed with ball in hand and Mika won that game. From then on it was all downhill for Mika. He jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Charlie scored his first game of the match. Mika was in the Zone and Charlie struggled. With a lot of safety play and run-outs Mika finished out the match 13-2.

Winner of the Derby City Classic 9-Ball Division is Ralf Souquet. Ralf went undefeated through the tournament and faced off against Efren Reyes in the finals. Reyes was playing like he had the tournament locked after coming off his win in the One Pocket Division and capturing the All Around Champion bonus. Ralf ran the first three racks and won the first set 7-2. Reyes used his “buy Ralf Souquet back” and a second set was played but Ralf again came out on top 7-2. Ralf took home the $13,000 first prize. In One Pocket Division Reyes played Marco Marquez. Marco jumped out in the finals with a 7-3 lead but ended up losing the match 8-7. Efren took home first prize of $9,000 and $20,000 for being All Around Champion. The Bank Pool Division of the Derby City Classic was won by Jason Miller from Efren Reyes Dayton, Ohio. Jason was an unknown player to the tournament and surprised not only the fans but the players as well. Billiard Club Network had live online coverage of all the events at the Derby City Classic. Resurrection - Finale

(continued from page 21)

firmly on the break. A ball popped into the side pocket immediately, the table spread handsomely. I examined the table. Crossing over to Joe, I took a drink of tea and eyed the table over the rim of the glass. Roaming back to the table, I set myself, took my time and made the first shot. The crowd clapped lightly. Breaking out the cluster on the next shot was risky but necessary. A bad roll and I could scratch. Opting to go for it, I made the five, hit the rail and slammed lightly into the cluster, hoping for a decent roll. The cue ball kissed out into the center of the table. The crowd groaned. Although I’d gotten a good roll on the cue ball, three of the four object balls in the cluster died against the side rail while the two ball rolled down the table and parked against the lower rail. All of Ever Ready’s balls however, were spread beautifully. D-Day. If I missed, the table and the momentum would be his, including the break. Carefully, I studied the possibilities. If I tried a thin cut down the rail, my position would be suspect at best. To control the cue ball, I’d have to cross bank two consecutive shots and get enough angle to get down the table on the two. Ever Ready coughed then cleared his throat. He moved deliberately in his chair. I hovered over the six and eyed it against the rail. If I hit it perfectly and drew the cue ball back enough, I could make the one, stick the cue ball, make the four and get on the two at the end of the table. Bearing down on the six, I visualized the shot in my mind and at the right moment followed through. The six popped across the table firmly into the opposite side pocket. The cue ball obeyed my stroke and crawled back a few inches and stopped. The crowd applauded lightly. Ever Ready drank his coffee and set the cup down then reached across the bar table. Suddenly, the coffee cup went flying to the floor, the coffee with it. The crowd quieted. I ignored Ever Ready and focused on the one ball. This time I’d have to avoid the kiss on the cross bank and stick the cue ball. Behind me, Ever Ready picked up the cup and said insincerely, “very sorry Senor.” I studied the shot. “Resist the temptation to make slight adjustments,” the ghost of Charley Sturgis whispered, “trust your stroke, stay with your instincts, and follow through.” I stayed with the stroke. When I followed through, the one popped cross rail to the opposite side pocket just like the six. Only this time, the cue ball held and froze in place, and barely avoided the double kiss. The crowd applauded. I sighed. The next shot was basic. “Never let down after making a tough shot,” Charley’s voice echoed, “Real winners don’t miss shots they’re supposed to make.” The four ball stood on the side rail near the head string. Low left English and a smooth easy stroke should pull the cue ball down the table for position on the two. Ever Ready jumped from his chair and eyed the shot. I turned my back to him, chalked my cue and thought about the shot. Two bad things could happen. One, I could scratch in the lower corner pocket, or I could get straight in on the two and leave myself a difficult position shot on the eight.

Ever Ready went back to his chair. I turned and eyed the shot that I had already seen. I cleared my throat and bore down on the shot. Ever Ready, in his chair, was almost directly in front of me. I rose up, eyed the shot carefully, then set myself. As expected, Ever Ready moved then slumped into his chair. Confidently I eyed the four and followed through. The cue ball plunked the four solidly into the corner then loped backwards to the foot of the table. Catching the long rail, it killed softly at its touch and rested perfectly at an angle on the two. The crowd applauded. They sensed the victory. Ever Ready found it impossible to stay in his seat. He stood up, grabbed his cue cloth, and started wiping down his cue. I had to make the two in the corner pocket, roll up on the eight and make it in the side pocket to win the match. Without hesitation, I eyed the two, stroked the cue ball and watched as it rolled slowly up on the eight. Ever Ready saw the shot. In one last attempt to shark me, he unscrewed his cue. “Match!” The referee yelled, hopping off his seat. He ran to the center of the arena and raised his arms like I’d just scored a touchdown. “Mr. Reyes!” he roared, “has fouled by breaking down his cue prematurely!” Like a veteran ringmaster in a heavy weight fight, he grabbed my right hand and lifted it to the sky. The crowd cheered robustly. Ever Ready, shaking his head, pocketed his cue without saying anything. Lauterette, steaming with emotion, froze in his chair just enough to register the significance of the win. Then he came over and picked me up like I was his long lost brother and started shouting. “Zee Champeen, Zee Champeen!” “Joe,” I gargled, “down boy.” He eyed me cross-eyed, then set me down and

“Never let down after making a tough shot,” Charley’s voice echoed, “Real winners don’t miss shots they’re supposed to make.” celebrated with anyone who would listen. People rushed up to congratulate me. Instinctively, I glanced up into the balcony and looked for Elizabeth. Miraculously, I saw her and Linda Jo leaning over the second floor balcony, smiling like they’d been stuffed with a carton of light bulbs. All around me, people tugged and pulled at me, asking for autographs and pictures. As the cameras flashed, I glanced back toward Elizabeth. In her hands was a large cardboard sign, and on it was scrawled a message, “THE ANSWER’S YES.” At that moment, the rambunctious crowd disappeared around me. Like the shots I had faced minutes before, the focus was just as intense. Only the object of my affection was much more human, and much prettier. I shook a few hands and signed some programs. Then, as soon as I saw Elizabeth coming toward me, I froze. “Congratulations, Mr. Keating,” she said. Nod. “You are the new Texas Eight Ball champion,” she said proudly. As I held her, I thought about what she had just said. My game had truly been resurrected, as well as my life. Resurrection. That’s what it was. I had been reborn. And life for the moment was really good.
